Scarier than any large man swinging his fist. I groaned when the credits rolled right after that. I want more, now. I don’t know how they’re going to tie all this up in just three more episodes.

    1

I think they’re gonna have to make the final three episodes 1h40, Reply series style.

This is the second time in kdramaland that I’ve wish for a season 2. The first time was with Happiness. 🥺

Kim Hee-Won – it’s soo strange to see him as a ridiculous character in the butt touching show and then to see him as a f$&@! bad a$$ teacher in Moving.
My brain cannot process this

@reply1988 is responsible for more ways to enjoy this site. I wonder if all of us hitting refresh on the Beanies page is straining the server. Regardless, I could not get a full Errand Boy set.

8

But you got a set with eight DIFFERENT levels! That’s not so easy, either, especially considering how many of us are trapped at Errand Boy level.

Really, how much errand-running do our DB overlords need, grumble grumble.

”I got rid of every trace that could lead to me and everything I ever had and left with my daughter.

No

I left with my everything”

Moving episode 14

Folks- this is writing perfection.

While other shows are losing steam (MLL cough cough), this show continues to slay and somehow finds a way to outdo itself.

Even out of order this gave me the feels again. Lovely episode.

I find I get very emotional whenever there are scenes with Ju Won and Hui Soo. Like when she swiped for the light to turn on when he had to leave her on her own, or when he arrived home to see his dinner prepared for him, or when she was telling him that she remembered her mum smiling right after the crash, knowing that she’d inherited his powers, and then he had to send her home so he could cry.😭😭😭 The exploration of how dehumanising it has been for each person that the government has discovered having superpowers is just gutting. Instead of feeling relief that his daughter is more or less invincible, he’s burdened with overwhelming worry at her being a target and exploited. This show really excels at making me feel without much narration or fanfare. It can be so hard to watch and yet I am so invested in these characters’ lives!!

    6

I’m with you. I love these lines so much that I did a double take of this scene – “I left with my everything” so poignantly put.

Each episode outdoes the last one indeed. For Ep 15, it’s Gang-hoon and his dad who got me. I lost it and wept when 4-year old Gang-Hoon threw away the NIS guys. Then, there’s the scene of two ‘monsters’ joining force the save the boy. So good!

    4
    2

And, of course, the flashback to Jin-Hee’s smile before dying knowing her daughter has got ‘it’ and would survive.

      3

I’m losing track of the sheer number of poignant scenes when the show stops me in my tracks and I’m thinking “Wow, just Wow”
All those scenes you mention and then some more. What surprises me is that the show hits hard not just with your typical 1-2 characters, but it hits hard with 8+ characters.

The original webtoon writer has upped the ante.

    2
    1

He outdid himself with the drama script – although yet to see the merit of the bus driver character because he himself is a fan of Chase Tae-hyun and created this role for CTH which doesn’t exist in the webtoon.

      2
      1

I myself am a fan of Cha Tae-hyun, but you’re right … not invested in the bus driver character. Although his superhero alter ego with the spiked coloured hair wig was awesome.

Maybe because I do love me some fantastic hair, heh! Su Mun’s Uncanny Counter 2 rocking ponytail, Red haired FLs in 19th life and A Good Day to be a Dog, Rowoon’s strategically placed hair locks in Destined. Swoon!

Cha Tae-hyun’s, electricity man avatar may have a key role to play in the final showdown in the school but all his bus driver scenes seem shoed-in and his go-to strategy of racing his bus to allegedly catch one bad guy in a bus full of innocent passengers is questionable. Coming to think about it – the bus driver’s character is my only gripe in the drama writing.

I just love Cha Tae-hyun’s, full throated laughs and he plays the straight man so well (Brain Works). He has done so many fun cameos in various dramas that it seems that he would be a very well-loved person IRL. I loved him in My Heart Puppy (so good, so fun, so heart breaking, all the feels) and Hit the Top (which he also directed) with baby faced Cha Eun-woo and Kim Min-jae. CEW’s pouts were really something.

Today was the best worst day of my life. I dropped off my oldest daughter for college. I didn’t realize just how hard this would hit me- much harder than any white truck of doom. Emotions took over like a drama, but unlike that fantastic fictional world, this was real.

I wanted to tell her than I wanted nothing but Happiness for her. I want her to achieve her Dreams and Because this is her First Life, I want her to experience everything that only youth can provide. Some days she will feel Lost, and I let her know that It’s Okay to Not be Okay. My ray of sunshine has left the nest. I wish I could do more. I want to cradle and protect her forever.

22
4

I dropped off my daughter for her first year of residential school as a 10th grader. I held it together, but just barely. Then I watched a drama and cried my eyes out. Her senior brother is there too. So now, I have a semi empty nest. I’ll commiserate with you. I’m sure college is much harder. My kids are still kids. College students think they’re adults and they are, kind of, and that makes it more difficult. You will always be her safety net though. 🐣

Aww. I can’t imagine how you must feel, but one day soon I will. Perhaps watching a soulful drama might help release some of those emotions? Or a happy watch, or whatever drama fits your needs now.

And I loved how you wove in those drama titles in your descriptions.

Aww, this is so sweet! I’ve been on the other end of this – though not going away for college but on a Uni exchange trip instead. I remember thinking I’d be so fine and totally ‘adult’ and ready for it – but the minute I landed I was in tears and on the phone to mum. Might be growing older every year but will forever be her baby and I’m sure it’s the same for your daughter!! Here’s a big hug to help you get through all the feels 💕

I’m hoping you all wax poetic about all the drama references over on the weecaps this week. 90% of them are going straight over my head, and I WANNA KNOW! 🙂

      3

Same. I want to know the one where the friend (dok hui) plays the accordion leaning on a car. I am pretty sure its from a drama.

        1

I first thought it was a small boat out of water so I was thinking Hometown ChaChaCha but the accordion threw me off. I’ll have to ask in the weecaps.
Did anyone catch the My Liberation Notes references? I think there were 2 attempts (the music is a giveaway). The first attempt was the iconic “Worship Me” line. I’m now curious how many drama references I missed in that show.

          2
          2

Well, the police chief straight out asked the female officer if she thought she was -insert name of MLN writer- with her ornate apology letters and then they all riffed on that for a while. Is it the same writer of the Butt show? They couldn’t seem more different 🤷‍♀️

            1
            0

@bbstl The PD is the same as MLN, but the writer is different… @elinor has a theory on my gif post that this whole show grew out of some drunken bet that the MLN group had. Seems reasonable to me.

I still don’t understand the title “Moving
It doesn’t seem to have any relevance to the show
At this rate 20 episodes won’t do this show justice. Will the sequel be titled “Resting”?

Moving did anyone else catch this? The bullied girl, when she disappeared for a bit, she was with the security guard. The somewhat strange guard that seems to see everything.

7

She’s said to be rich. I wonder if she’s the daughter of someone high up in NIS so she can transfer to that school though without special abilities. The security guard is obviously the eye and ear of the agency.

Hulu USA
2022
Hulu was just another streaming site barely on the radar for Kdrama content

Quality over quantity. Hulu is killing it

This is me with Disney+! From what I gather anyways, Disney+ releases are going to Hulu for certain countries (?), US included (I think?) because all the titles you’ve mentioned are on Disney+ for me.

It’s really shit that they’ve geo-locked most Kdrama content to the Asia-Pacific region (a blessing that Australia is included in this area 😅) for no good reason but highkey all Disney+ Kdramas have been incredible in terms of production quality at the very least. It’s a pity in that sense that they’ve capped or suspended their Kdrama production now? I vaguely remember seeing an article sometime earlier this year that Disney+ wasn’t going to invest in Kdramas anymore. The reason I believe was that they weren’t seeing returns on their investment – I’m no financial expert but maybe, just maybe if they actually made it accessible to the large portion of their subscribing audience, they might actually see those returns?? What’s the point of locking out North America, amongst other countries, and then being like ‘hmm we’re not making money, cancel all plans’ 🤦‍♀️

    11
    2

Even with VPN, Disney+ is a hard nut to crack *sighs*

      3
      0

Whaaat? Disney plus is cutting Kdramas? Noooo! Return on investment? How do you get ROI based on 3 Kdramas released in 2023? This is exactly the opposite of what Netflix is doing as they are gaining a reputation in this space and seeing 40% of their viewers now turned into Kdramas. Also, the Hulu algorithm is abysmal. It doesn’t recognize that- hey, this user might like Kdrama content, let highlight some. You have to specifically look for content. Sorry for the rant. Disney cutting Kdrama investment set me off. ….must….control… angerrrrr…🤬

      6
      1

Okay so I had a google because I remember seeing a headline but fuzzy on the details: it sounds like it’s mostly rumours and speculation based on a report by IT Chosun nothing officially confirmed yet:

        https://kbizoom.com/disney-koreas-ott-content-team-disbanded-2024-k-drama-lineup-at-risk-of-cancellation/

        https://www.koreatechdesk.com/korean-media-reports-disney-koreas-ott-content-team-dissolves-as-disney-struggles-in-korean-market/

So, it sounds like – if true – at the very least it’ll still license stuff but just won’t focus on producing content. Either way it’s still so dumb to geo-lock content and exclude such a large percentage of potential audience! But I’m so with you on the rant because like regardless of whether they have actually disbanded the Korean OTT team or not, they’re not capitalising as well as they should on the potential unlike Netflix which has taken it and just run with the possibilities (good or bad lol some misses with Netflix original content in any language but 👏 for expanding the catalogue).

That’s also so dumb with Hulu algorithm not highlight K-content, especially if it’s in your viewer history – I’m also not a tech expert but I assume this is a basic function for a streaming platform??

        5
        1

I’m with the two of you, but I think there’s a real split-decision amongst the larger population about whether Disney is/was helping the Kdrama cause. The three dramas you listed a the top @lostpanda really are amazing, but some other folks think they’ve not got sufficient “K-mojo” (made that phrase up just now :)).

Whatever. This sort of content clearly wasn’t where the executives wanted to invest for the long-term, but we got some really great shows out of it for now!!!

          2
          0

    Same with Amazon Prime!!
    Prime has:
“Heartbeat”, “True to Love”, “He is Psychometric”, “Reply 1994” & “1988”, “Bring it On, Ghost”, “Tale of the Nine-Tailed”, “WWW”, “The Crowned Clown”, “Signal”, “Prison Playbook”, “Island”, “May I Help You?”, “Anna”, “The Killing Vote”

Movies: “Train to Busan”, “A Taxi Driver”, “Payback”, “The Swindlers”, “Zombie for Sale”, “Suspect”, “Assassination”

… That’s just what I can see scrolling on the homepage of my Amazon Prime Video tv app. I’m sure I will find more if I do a deep dive

    5
    1

Amazon is great too – quite a bit of overlap with Netflix catalogue though which is interesting, feel like it could pick up on some of the content that’s often missed by Viki/Netflix/Disney+ or at least overlap with Viki more rather than Netflix, but then again I have zero clue how licensing agreements work and am probably really, really oversimplifying the process.

      2
      2

Yes! I feel like Netflix definitely had their lightbulb moment first, in terms of realizing the benefits of offering more (Southeast) Asian content, specifically Korean and Chinese (they were the first to pick up the really popular Chinese BL drama, “The Untamed”)— and Amazon is definitely picking up on this benefit as well. As I was scrolling through Prime, there were also a handful of Chinese dramas on there that I did not expect them to have!

        1
        0

I used to like Viki because it offers decent subtitles and has hilarious live comments. But recently when watching the same show on both Netflix and Viki (eg., Taxi Driver 1 and Where Stars Land), I noticed Viki had lower video resolution than Netflix. I’m wondering if it’s always the case or it just happened with the 2 shows I watched.

        2
        2

I had the same experience with Reply 1988 but thought it was just my computer! I’ll have to test it out with When I Fly Towards You – I watched this on Viki original but it just dropped on Netflix. Wouldn’t be surprised if this was the case though, since Netflix does offer like 4k resolution options and is the ‘bigger’ platform of the two. Sounds like it’s a choice between higher resolution or better subtitles 😔

          2
          1

I also saw that it dropped on Netflix! Viki is the one who said that they would be committing to adding more Chinese drama content, but Netflix is still beating them in this regard

            1
            0

That’s curious… I haven’t been on nor used Viki in a loooooong time, since I stopped being a volunteer subber for them, so I can’t really comment on it much XD

          2

My top three of the year as well.

Go Disney! I never thought I’d say those words ever, never mind k-drama context.

My Lovely Liar (ep5-6) is picking up steam. A wonderful show so far. It’s funny (much funnier than the butt touching show), cute, and kinda adorable. Production values aren’t the highest and some situations are a bit contrived but that’s a minor quibble. This show is GOOD.
AND
Moving (ep8-9), this show with the crappy title, is establishing itself as an EPIC tour de force. They just used 2 entire episodes to build up the floaty boy’s parents story. Unbelievably well done. I’m in awe. This just might be the Kdrama of the year. Production values are through the roof, writing is impeccable, acting is top notch. I love this drama. I’m dreading that we are almost 1/2 way through.

What a great time where two excellent shows are going on simultaneously.
