Beanie level: Eunuch in drag

Lovely Runner ep3 was all kinda cringe. And the dadโ€™s acting was just plain bad and annoying. I guess my humor isnโ€™t aligned with Korean humor.

But then the last 5 minutes. 😳🤯.

Recipie for a show

Lovely Liar plus Lovely Boxer minus the Lying Boxer but add a dose of Runner.

Sprinkle in some high school time traveling Twinkling Watermelon and the forboding tunnel from Twenty Five Twenty One and you get

Lovely Runner

I’m all in.

Tell Me That You Love Me finale

Farewell to an amazing show that captured the precious moments of life in the most beautiful heartfelt manner.

I will remember this show forever.

Iโ€™m going to need to take a break from Kdramas for a bit. This show took a stranglehold of my soul and itโ€™s going to take a bit of time for me to wrangle my soul back. I donโ€™t have any emotional energy left to spend on another show.

Bravo

While I still found the emotional to keep plodding through kdramas, it is really comforting to note that someone shared my sentiment about TMTYLM taking a stranglehold of the soul. I thought I was overreacting when I felt the same way cause it got so overwhelming at some point.

Seems that “Tell Me That You Love Me” is one of those dramas that resets the bar in our expectations and responses. @mmmmm had commented on similar vibes.

This drama requires reflection and time to explore and imbibe.
It does hit the right notes.

Tell Me That You Love Me ep 14
Itโ€™s getting late and I want to take my time to cherish such a well thought out, deeply layered, and thoughtful show. I donโ€™t want this to end so Iโ€™ll hold off finishing this tonight.

Grossly underratedโ€ฆthis gem.

This show is making all the recent shows feel a bitโ€ฆshallow and lacking depth.

There are moments in every episode that sends shivers down my spine. I feel like this show is communicating directly with my soul.

I canโ€™t hate any of the characters. Most of them feel like they embody parts of me. I am part Mo-Eun. I am part Jin-Woo. I am part Seo-Kyung. I am part Jo-Han. All of these characters speak directly to my soul.

The director was also responsible for Our Beloved Summer and I see the resemblance. This is the more mature, and much deeper and more realistic version of OBS. The artistry of each shot is beatifully done. The use of music to frame certain scenes is similar to OBS.
Iโ€™ve now added this director as someone to watch out for. Same with Shin Hyun-Bin, she just made the cut on my favorite actress list.

The lack of attention this drama gets is criminal.

It really is an amazing drama. I hope that it is one that keeps gaining attention and eventually the masses will pick it up and see its greatness so it becomes big years after it was aired.

You see, I didn’t exaggerate when I said this one tops the rank for me together with Forest of Secrets: They are different, but both of them .. true masterpieces.

There are many excellent dramas, but for me, this one crossed the line to become an art piece. It’s funny to think how daring the writer, director, the cast and crew must have been trying to film such an excellent piece of art.

People turn away upon the word melodramas.. but I wish they would give this one a try. Maybe, just maybe, they might like it. I agree with one comment on the internet that it is daring in the sense that it is all about the essence of life.. with no fringes and frills. It says its messages straightforwardly and honestly. It is great because it is so honest in its storytelling and how it tells the story.

It came at the right time, too. When I was about to lost trust in Kdramaland, there was a knight in a shining armor who came and saved the day. That knight is known as TMTYLM.

This one might be my favorite of the favorites. As one comment on another website said “an instant classic”.

I love how beautifully you’ve captured the very essence of the drama. 😊

I made an effort and met up with 3 old friends that I havenโ€™t seen in a decade.

Men are funny creatures. We will never tell each other that we love each other. Itโ€™s implicit and obvious. Our guards are down and we talk about the dumbest nonsensical unimportant things. This is how we say โ€œI love youโ€ in the most manly man manner. Useless moments like these seem to make my life shine.

Tell Me That You Love Me ep 6
I want to watch this series slower so that I can cherish every second.
What I love about this show:
When Jin Woo narrates his thoughts, his thoughts seems so deep and introspective. While both Silent (jdrama) and Twinkling Watermelon (both excellent!! BTW) had deaf characters – this show really brings you into their world a layer deeper, which is no small feat given how great those other two shows were.

What else I love about this show: that real life feeling when you are in a crowded room but you only notice the presence of one person. This show captured it so well as the audience fades to the background and only one other person exists. Stunningly Beautiful.

More that I loved about this show is the difficult portrayal of how 2 people โ€œgetโ€ each other where each party seems to know exactly what the other one is going through without saying a single word. This show captures these rare real life empathy moments soo well in a similar way to My Mister

โ€œIt feels like you listen to my heart and not my voiceโ€

Another scene I loved, when Mo-Eun gets her first acting chance, the way the light pop on, it reminded me of Na Hee-Doโ€™s grand entrance in Twenty Five Twenty One

My only gripe about this show so far are the subtitles. It seems like the subtitles pop up after the characters say their line. Work harder Hulu/Disney. And please have a more coherent release strategy.

Tell Me That You Love Me is out in the USA on Hulu. Talk about underrated and overlooked. Iโ€™m sad I missed the live watch – blame Disney/Huluโ€™s odd release strategy. I thought I loved this show by EP1 but EP2 just grabbed my ❤️ and ran.
The actress/actor is superb. The silent micrexpressions are like Call it Love. The music is superb. Iโ€™m only on EP2 and Iโ€™m already worried about this show ending.

It took a while for me to recover from rewatching My Mister and being reminded of what a masterpiece that show was and still is. I salute Lee Sun-Kyung

My Demon finally finished it and forgot all about it the next day. I think the show forgot that its strength was humor. It was all downhill after the tango dance battle.

Like Flowers in Sand finished that one too, but Iโ€™m not as enthralled by this show as most. The romance never โ€œhitโ€ as I donโ€™t think the FL ever reciprocated.

Tell Me That You Love Me OMO. Iโ€™m one episode in and itโ€™s hitting all the emotions HARD. Iโ€™m totally invested into both of the leads. Is it too early to say Iโ€™m in love with this show?

Nope! It will be love at first sight and stay for the duration of the show. Hope you enjoy ☺️

LFIS was not a romance drama. Itโ€™s a story about friends who lost and found each other.
I actually donโ€™t mind this since it gave a well fleshed out characters for 12 episodes. And the potential romance was left to viewers imagination. 😇
Du Shikโ€™s expression of love was in character. In another drama she would be in the stadium cheering for him and accepting his confession or even giving an answer. But then that wonโ€™t be Du Shik.

I do hopebyou enjoy TMTYLM. While it stopped short for being a classic but only with the barest of margins. Welcome to the fan club. We look forward to hearing your updates on this. 🥳

#2023Roundup
Beanies – I appreciate all of you.
We talk about โ€œfound familiesโ€ in dramas and yet I feel like I found a family here in Dramabeans.
Thanks you all for being here.
Thank you all for providing a sympathetic listening outlet.
Thank you all for sharing all the joy of Kdramas.
Thank you all for hilarious rants when our shows fly off the rails.
Thank you all for just being Nice.
Thank you all for providing a virtual shoulder to cry on. I didnโ€™t appreciate this outlet as much as I should have until Lee Sun-Kyunโ€™s passing.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
2023 was my first year on Dramabeans. Iโ€™m soo glad to have found you all in this tiny warm corner of the internet.
Of course, Iโ€™ll express this with a quote from the kdrama that hooked me for life:

โ€œA word that describes our relationship doesnโ€™t exist yet. Acquaintance. Friends. Lovers. None of the words that people have invented apply.โ€

#2023 SBS Drama Awards

Random thoughts on these SBS Drama awards

Love that Kim Tae-Ri is getting more recognition. Sheโ€™s amazing and continues her amazing streak with Revenant Even more amazing is the success despite the late start of her career

Hwasa changing her song from I Love my body to LMM 🫶🏻🥺. Hwasa is truly an angel with her tribute to Lee Sun-Kyun.💔

Best Young Actress – how did Yu-Na Kidnapping Day not win this?

Top actor and top actress award. I really like the show My Demon. Song Kang and Kim Yoo-Jung as best actor and best actress? 🤔 While I think they did a fine job, I also think they are both amazingly pretty faces with okay acting chops. I can think of many actors/actresses who deserved this soo much more.

The audience- when the camera panned to the audience- it was tiny. Sometimes we forget just how small Korea is.

This is what Lee Je Hoon said in his acceptance speech, and now part of the K-netizens are bashing him for saying he wished to follow LSKโ€™s path?! Sometimes I really donโ€™t know if I saw and heard what they saw and heard, because I couldnโ€™t get why theyโ€™d interpret it that way. This is also showing that part of the K-netizens are to blame for LSKโ€™s tragic fate because of their malicious comments regardless of what it is attributed to, culture or constitution.

I respect artists who mourned LSK in public. I can imagine how much they were affected by his death.

I understand when someone tells me donโ€™t blame it on SK people as a whole, but this level of toxicity is making me think whether and how much more I should consume its content.

        @mmmmm my beloved beanie.

If you choose to boycott k content, arenโ€™t you inherently โ€œcancellingโ€ them the same way k-society cancels their celebrities at the first misstep.

I wish the entire world population would watch My Ajusshi because I believe the messages the writer/actor/director tries to send would make the world a better more empathetic place. I believe the voices of compassion and support needs to drown out the call to cancel.

Iโ€™ll leave this with another insightful quote from My Ajusshi that I attempt to live by on a daily basis. Instead of blame and condemn- itโ€™s a call to forgive and help.

“If you get to know a person, if you get to know them, nothing they do bothers you. And I know you.”

I hate that you sound so right, Lostpanda (and have you found your way back?). Sigh. I admit I canโ€™t understand this 100%. It isnโ€™t their first misstep. It doesnโ€™t look like they have learned or realized what they did was wrong. Itโ€™s heartbreaking even to think about forgiving this since a life lost canโ€™t be taken back. But somehow, your opinion also sounds right.

          I hate this.

Iโ€™ve started Like Flowers in the Sand
to help return things to normal. I loved the interaction between the 2 leads Du-Sik and Baek-Du. Seeing Lee Joo-Myoung (Seung-Wan of Twenty Five Twenty One) back on the screen again was like meeting an old friend after a long absence. Things were looking goodโ€ฆ

โ€ฆuntil ep 4 and the police interrogation scene. Yes, it was supposed to be a lighthearted innocent scene about 40,000 won (~$30 USD) – but that was enough to put my brain into a tailspin. I donโ€™t think very highly of the Korean police system at this moment.

All my anger came back the moment they stopped the match and announced in front of the entire village that they had to take him to the station.
Canโ€™t they assess whatโ€™s happening. Couldnโ€™t they wait 2 min for the match to end and talk to him in private.
Itโ€™s not like he is going to run away anywhere. Nor is he the prime suspect. He was just a witness??
I donโ€™t want to see cops or the investigation here. I hope we donโ€™t see much of it anymore.

Godzilla Minus One

Wow.

Beanies, I wasnโ€™t expecting this or any Godzilla movie to be good. Not in a million years did I think I would post something like this on Dramabeans.
This wasnโ€™t good, it was great. The reviews were through the roof, but i didnโ€™t believe it until i saw it for myself. My wife even refused to watch it with me because โ€œwho wants to watch dumb monsters?โ€ Wife was wrongโ€ฆso wrong.

Godzilla Minus One is not just an action movie- itโ€™s a Jdrama.
The focus is not the monster, but the humans characters. They are complex and conflicted. Itโ€™s post WW2 and the Japanese citizens are defeated and tired and now they have to deal with a different threat. Yes, there are some anime like moments, but you will be rooting for the humans. What an incredibly surprising Movie of the year.
