A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 12

It’s a good day to be deceived! This week, our vengeful mountain spirit plays a cruel trick on our OTP that forces them apart. Hello, angst. We spin around in circles as usual, but at least, a new relationship is born.

EPISODE 12

Dramaland’s favorite trope, amnesia, strikes this week. But not for Seo-won — as was Bo-gyeom’s deal with Hae-na. You see, our petty mountain spirit was not a fan of Seo-won’s confident “I will fall in love with Hae-na even if my memories are wiped” statement, so he decided to wipe Hae-na’s memories instead. It’s a good thing our OTP already knew that Bo-gyeom is unpredictable as weather, and they prepared for the possibility that she might be the one to lose her memories.

Our OTP’s grand plan is for the one whose memories remain to seduce the other. But seduction is not as easy as it sounds, because Hae-na deflects all Seo-won’s attempts to win her heart — just like he did to her when she initially chased him around to break her curse. And you know, Seo-won’s attempt at mirroring everything Hae-na did for him back then would have been funnier if I wasn’t so disinterested in the show, and if Bo-gyeom wasn’t milking this entire situation for his amusement.

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 12

Bo-gyeom did not just wipe Hae-na’s memories, he also reset that of her family. So when the dog uncle transforms back to human again, the whole family acts like it’s the first time his transformation ever happened — even though Yoo-ra can’t shake off the feeling that something feels familiar about the scenario. Hae-na has similar conflicting feelings about Seo-won, and some things just don’t add up for her. Why does he have a dog keychain that looks familiar? Why is a date on his desk calendar at work marked with “Seo-hae” the same way hers is at home?

Hae-na is further thrust into confusion when Seo-won straight up confesses his feelings to her since seduction doesn’t seem to be working. But since Hae-na’s memories have been reset, she’s back in her crush on Bo-gyeom phase, so she turns Seo-won down. Even though she can’t get his confession out of her head.

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 12

Bo-gyeom gleefully informs Seo-won that he did not earn Hae-na’s love all on his own because he (Bo-gyeom) plotted everything right from the curse-activating kiss. “I threw her your way,” Bo-gyeom jests, and a pissed off Seo-won throws a punch Bo-gyeom’s way. Seo-won now looks like the bad guy when Hae-na catches them in the brawl, and of course, she sides with Bo-gyeom.

To further rub it in Seo-won’s face, Bo-gyeom asks Hae-na out. She asks for time to think about it because she still believes that her family is cursed, but I’m done. Like I’m actually done with the show at this point because WTF!? For the sake of viewing the drama as separate from the webtoon, I’ve been trying to gloss over all the changes made to the original story, but I don’t think I can get over this particular one. Even as a joke, why is Bo-gyeom asking Hae-na out? This is no longer revenge, this is a childish tantrum, and I’m so over this guy.

Thinking about it, what did Bo-gyeom expect Mak-soon to do back then? Sacrifice the man she loved to protect her mistress? Bo-gyeom is the mountain spirit. He could have used his oh-so-powerful amnesia spell to wipe off the memories of the soldiers chasing Cho-young, and everybody lives happily ever after. The end. And if it is against mountain spirit ethics to meddle in human affairs, he should at least use his powers to amass wealth and be awesome like his fellow dramaland immortals, instead of messing around with helpless humans. What a colossal waste of powers. Tsk.

On the bright side, Yul is back! And as always he’s the best part of the week. Yul has no recollection of Hae-na beyond her status as his teacher at school, so he has no idea of what Ji-ah is talking about when she mentions that Seo-won and Hae-na are in a relationship. That’s right, Ji-ah’s memories are still intact, so she confronts Bo-gyeom because she doesn’t understand why he’d go as far as wiping Hae-na’s memories and breaking up her relationship with Seo-won.

Ji-ah guesses that it has something to do with how she died in the past, and she asks if Seo-won and Hae-na were the ones who killed her. Bo-gyeom doesn’t reply, so Ji-ah does the next best thing: ambush the vice principal into spilling. She manages to extract the location of the mountain where Cho-young died from the vice principal, and it’s road trip time for Ji-ah and Yul — who ropes himself into coming along.

As they hike up the mountain, Ji-ah brings Yul up to speed on his forgotten memories. Yul immediately calls Hae-na to come over to his house for an “emergency,” and lets his uncle in on the plan to rekindle their romance. And while Yul congratulates himself for playing Cupid, Ji-ah finally reaches the cliff where Cho-young fell off from, and her memories of dying in the past return. Hmmm.

When Hae-na arrives at Yul’s house, she re-learns that Seo-won and Yul are uncle and nephew. Being in Seo-won’s space, Hae-na can’t help feeling like she has been here before, and she voices out the conflicting emotions in her head and heart. To clear her confusion, Seo-won leans in to kiss her, and she has flashbacks of all their previous kisses. But what is supposed to be a romantic moment turns sour as Hae-na pushes Seo-won away and rushes out of the house. Oops!

By the way, Yoo-na and Woo-taek have become an official couple, so at least one of the Han sisters is having a blissful relationship — although I won’t put it past Bo-gyeom to try to ruin it for them with his misery loves company mantra.

I am slightly curious about how Ji-ah will react to Hae-na and Seo-won’s plight now that she has recovered her memories about dying at their hands. Will she take the Bo-gyeom route of vengeance? Or will we get a different perspective of the incident from her? We’ve got two episodes to go, and for me, those two weeks can’t come fast enough!

No legit why didn't the one guy with POWERS actually do something to save the day in the past life timeline?!?!?!!? Every week I get more surprised with just how little I care about shaman girl and Bo-gyeom (it's a surprise because I didn't think I could care any less in the first place?!). Idk I thought I've already seen my fair share of undercooked, horribly thought out and outright stupid revenge plots, but this one might take the cake because it's just so darn messy for no good reason - not to mention just feels narratively out of place. Like there are so many questions here about what his objective is or why he did & didn't do certain things before and what exactly the end goal is here.

Honestly this week was a let down because while I found the romance cute before, it was cute because it was funny, simple and light, and now it's delving into angst territory and I'm just not feeling the depth of that so it's falling flat as a result. Tbh, at this point I'm now just watching to get the bean because we're literally in the last leg of the drama, and I'm hoping we'll get some cute fluff again at the end at least.

Spot on. This mountain spirit is extremely capricious and not too bright.

"I've already seen my fair share of undercooked, horribly thought out and outright stupid revenge plots, but this one might take the cake"

This nails it for me, and I could not agree more with this comment. Not to mention how frustrated I get when I have seen the same tired plot devices used repeatedly in so many K-dramas.

Maybe this would have worked better if our couple had already been together way earlier in the series, and the memory wiping had happened. I think the bullying and dumb reporter storylines would have been better left out and replaced with the memory wiping from the get-go and then we see our couple trying to work back together. Both of those seem to have been pointless filler plotlines at this point.

100% with you on that last point especially - if this is something they wanted to include then they should've rethought the pacing and the storylines, because it was literally light fun for like 75% and then all of a sudden brought in the angst guns. I thought the 'big bad' of the season was just going to be the rogue reporter guy, but like you said that seems so filler now in hindsight.

This drama is too long for its story. Why 14 episodes? It doens't make sense, it's not the usual 10, 12 or 16 and they don't have any plot in the first place.

I was wishing to be hit by the truck of doom when I was watching Ji-Ah and the Vice-Principal playing for so long.

It's not like PKY and CEW had so much chemistry that I could just watch them.

It's me or PKY always looked with less clothes or less warm clothes than the others characters?

No kidding. Such a waste of screentime.

I actually thought it was hilarious. My family has played a lot of board games and it was fascinating to see them play the same games, especially Rummikub. I loved the principal’s desperation at always being beat. It was a highlight for me.

The idea was funny but it was way too long for me.

We understood that he will loose every game when he asked her...

i hate this change from the comic so much. First, Seo-won always had an unrequited crush on Hae-na. We already saw him pining over him as well as making awkward attempts to date her. This is just retreading that old territory. And I'm sorry, but Cha Eun-woo just isn't a good enough actor to make this angst that compelling.

- Hae-na is the one that Bo-geum bears a grudge toward, he should want her to suffer more. Otherwise why does Seo-won's family not turn into dogs? Actually that's something that makes zero sense about the drama in general... Is Seo-won just a reincarnation and Hae-na is both a reincarnation and descendent? If so, what are the odds of her being both?

- Hae-na never really disliked or was cold to Seo-won, she was reacting to him being cold to her. I don't believe that, if she was reverted to things pre-curse, she would be that standoffish towards him if he started being nicer to her. Confused and awkward, sure, but in the drama she's actually kind of mean.

- The webcomic IMO has a much better way of keeping them apart once one of them loses the memory of their relationship. Bo-geum in the drama is coming across like a psychopath with his continued interference (and now it looks like he wants to kill her??)

- Why didn't Bo-geum just erase everyone's memory to save Cho-young?

This show stopped making sense couple of episodes ago but now it had hit new low bar. The mountain god is one of the worst antagonists of the year. He should be the one who we should feel sympathy for. His beloved died and he is living a century without her. The potential is already there but the show just chooses worst path for the execution. He is petty, arrogant and just throwing childish tantrums left and right.
Even if show failed to establish good antagonist it could have succeeded by keeping their OTP charming but it is failing in second regards too. The OTP interactions are becoming a chore.
Where is the cute doggy show that I was promised?

I am so happy that we had the light and funny elements back after weeks of darkness.

What was weird about turning the clock back re crushes was the teacher who likes Seowon doesn’t seem interested in him any more. Was she only chasing when she felt she had competition?
Also what’s the point in getting rid of the curse if none of them know it has happened? Will she realise when she doesn’t turn into a dog after the kiss? Will the uncle stay human now?

I hope they can turn things round with the Sharman waking the mountain god up by remembering what actually happened on the mountain and proving it was a misunderstanding and she sacrificed herself for her friend. I want the lightness to return and the show to redeem itself in the last couple of episodes.

What was the point of Seowan's conversation with the Shaman girl that seemed to go nowhere and was pointless? "Your memories are still intact? Yes. Okay, go inside now." WTF?

What is the point? At the end of the day that is the question, what is the Mountain spirit getting out of this? How is is this a punishment. They didn't do it, so what is he getting. Also, I really thought this was a 12er, so was very confused that there were two episodes left. They should never have done an episode a week for this drama, it is not working?

Mostly a clip show with mental torture of Seo-Won. The best part was the Shaman Hiking Club as JA begins her quest to find her past life and figure out BG’s real plan. Playing games with the bored Fox was a highlight moment in a rather dull episode. Lost Memory Loophole was always in plain sight: write down everything before you forget your memories. Duh. Why didn’t they think about that? And it seems the memories are not erased but blocked; can be re-activated by emotional cues. Why is HN so startled by SW’s kiss? (And why are the sisters no longer concerned about the Kiss Curse?)

The Mountain Spirit's revenge plan gets more dumb as the weeks pass. For a rom-com, there is no rom, a little com but mostly sidetracking nonsense.

I think this story ended when they confessed and the curse was lifted. Right now it’s in real weird territory and I am having a hard time motivating myself to watch it

Cha Eunwoo is the star of ep 12. Seowon's suffering is devastating but Eunwoo is amazing in this.
OMG. Cha Eun-woo is a really good actor to make this angst that compelling.

Yes, this became pretty idiotic. But guess what, I bet that in the end they didn't actually cause Ji Ah former incarnations' death, so it will probably be some Big Twist Reveal in the end, oooooh, how unpredictable... Lucky that I actually like Cha Eun Woo and have no problem with his acting - he's cute and just fine in this role, I'll finish this mess for him alone.

When I see lousy acting, I am more apt to blame the director, not the actor. The director is watching this and should be responsible for making necessary changes while filming.

He has moments where I think he's good, which also makes me think it's a direction thing. I mean look at Hayden Christensen in Star Wars.

If lousy acting is going on and the director can't tell, that is not a good director because the audience can very well tell. While an actor can bring something unique to a character, it's up to the director to determine whether it is working.

While I agree with other beanies that this drama has lost its way, obvs the reason she pushed him away after the kiss is bc she thinks she’s going to turn into a dog… (Memory loss still mostly intact?) and then open ep 13 when she doesn’t, the penny drops and voila! All those memories surely will flood back…

Honestly I’m more disappointed that a vengeful mountain god can’t even get a memory wipe right…

I am SO glad I dropped this show the minute I saw Seo-won regain the memory of how his fear of dogs started so early as I knew they were gonna change the plot and GOOD LORD i was right!

I can't believe what I just read. I hate this so much. This change from the webtoon is one of the worst thing they could've pulled.

Wasn't fumbling See You In My 19th Life enough????!!!

I never see a positive comment section on Dramabeans anymore lol. Are there even any shows people actually LIKE at this point? 😂 I absolutely loved this episode, I paused numerous times just to admire how good of an actor Cha Eu-Woo has become. He's totally immersed in his role and doesn't come across as awkward or uncomfortable like his past dramas. Also, all TV shows, kdramas or not, recycle plot. I'm sorry but that's just media and how humans work, there are too many TV series and media history to have something completely groundbreaking in new media.
Ugh I'll have to stop reading recaps from here cause this website has become too negative.

I hope you don’t feel the need to leave as that would be a shame as most of the time beanies are positive but for some reason certain actors or shows get more negative comments thank others, it’s usually only a few comments unless the show has disappointed everyone.

I get it's just a drama, it's fantasy, it's not supposed to make sense but how petty can be a spirit or god be?? He says past is past, he is no longer a mountain spirit but loves playing with the re-encarnations who has no memories or ideas about what happened. He plays around with humans with his powers which is a new low even for a spirit. What did he expect!?? Did he want the servant to give up her life for her mistress? The so called great spirit who can erase memories who is so powerful who is vengeful couldn't protect his love and he held someone else responsible for that. The storyline itself is so pathetic Disappointed after waiting for so long for the series to finish and watch it at a go. I still don't get the hype over the drama.
