A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 13

It’s a good day to be misunderstood! Our penultimate week has our heroine doing her very best to recover her lost memories. In the process, we go down the Joseon memory lane as usual, but this time, we get a surprising twist to what we initially assumed to be true.

EPISODE 13

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 13

We resume with Seo-won kissing Hae-na to jog back her memories, but Hae-na pushes him away and runs out with just one thing on her mind: her eventual transformation into a dog. How ironic! Hae-na forgot that the curse has already been lifted because her memories are wiped. And her memories are wiped because she chose to lift the curse. Thank you for nothing, Lee Bo-gyeom!

To Hae-na’s surprise, she doesn’t turn into a dog, and to her mortification, she still has to see Seo-won at school. Hae-na tries to avoid Seo-won because of her reaction to his kiss, but he refuses to be avoided. He is patient, though, so he tells her he’ll wait until she figures out her “missing piece” and how she really feels about him.

Meanwhile, thanks to Bo-gyeom’s selective amnesia spell, Hae-na’s uncle remembers that she once broke her curse with Seo-won. But Hae-na can’t recall being friendly with Seo-won to the point of kissing him. When Uncle stumbles on a chummy picture of Hae-na with Seo-won and Yul, he makes a beeline to the school to share his findings with his niece. Unfortunately, Uncle runs into the vice principal who distracts him from said assignment with treats. Sigh. Poor Uncle is still mentally and emotionally a dog.

To further prevent Uncle from spilling the beans to Hae-na, the vice principal confiscates the picture evidence and turns Uncle’s human voice into a bark. But several woofs — and the vice principal’s work ID — later, Uncle is at least able to inform Hae-na that the vice principal stole his voice. Okay, little mermaid.

Hae-na eventually sees the picture when she goes to drop off the vice principal’s ID in his office, and she remembers Seo-won’s words about her “missing piece.” Bits and pieces of her memories begin to return when she sees Bo-gyeom, and she confronts him stating that she wants the rest of her memories. “Which memories? The past life or the present?” Bo-gyeom asks. The present, duh! But for Hae-na to get her beloved memories back, Bo-gyeom says she has to return to the mountain where everything began.

Coincidentally, the vice principal brings up a horror story idea to the film club, and recommends an abandoned haunted house in the mountain as the perfect location to film. Hae-na is also to accompany the club members when they go filming. The members recruit Ji-ah to go along with them — probably because of her shamanic powers — but she smells something fishy about the arrangement, so she goes to Bo-gyeom. Unfortunately, he already moved out of his secret basement at school, and it seems like he has also quit his job.

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 13

Ji-ah shares her suspicion that Bo-gyeom is preparing for something bigger than erasing Hae-na’s memories with Seo-won, and she warns him to prevent Hae-na from going to the mountain. Ji-ah also shares that she died in that mountain in her previous life, and that all of them are connected via the past life.

From the little she remembers, Hae-na can tell that she and Seo-won were a couple, and she apologizes to him for not realizing sooner. With Ji-ah’s warning in mind, Seo-won tells Hae-na that she doesn’t need to find her missing piece or even go to the mountains at all, since they can always start over. Still, Hae-na insists on going, so Seo-won comes along on the trip with the film club. And as usual, Yul ropes himself into the activity because he has to “protect someone” *coughs* Ji-ah *coughs* Lol. Like uncle, like nephew.

The club members scram when the haunted house becomes a little too haunted, and the teachers spread out to assemble the students. Seo-won and Hae-na end up on a semi-leisure stroll, and while playing catch-up, Hae-na re-learns that Seo-won has a dog phobia. Unfortunately, Bo-gyeom is right there waiting for our OTP with a pack of wild dogs — which he releases in their direction! Whoa! I didn’t think Bo-gyeom could get any crueler, but here we are.

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 13

Ji-ah comes face to face with Bo-gyeom at the cliff, and unlike other times, he sees her now as Cho-young. Since Cho-young is the heroine of the past life tale, it is only fitting that we get the full backstory from her point of view. It turns out that Mak-soon did not snitch to the soldiers, rather, they trailed her back to the mountains to get to Cho-young. Soo-hyun also escaped from prison on learning that Mak-soon was pregnant, and everyone ended up at the Cliff of Doom.

In the process of swatting arrows aimed at Cho-young, Soo-hyun had his sword pointed in her direction — which is the scene Bo-gyeom spotted from afar off and misinterpreted as Soo-hyun aiming for Cho-young. Ha! With no foreseeable way out, Cho-young grabbed the sword and drove it into her belly. “Mak-soon, my baby is gone, but we can save your baby,” she said to a sobbing Mak-soon, before falling off the cliff…

This whole time, it was Cho-young who willingly sacrificed her life to save her friends. So where do we go from here, Mr. Mountain Spirit? All this damn drama over a simple misunderstanding. Tsk. Would it have killed Bo-gyeom to ask questions before jumping into conclusion and cursing everyone and their dogs? I can’t believe Soo-hyun took an arrow to the chest and died to protect Bo-gyeom’s woman, only for Bo-gyeom to curse his woman and their descendants in return. Truly, no good deed goes unpunished.

In the present, Bo-gyeom licks his wounds about being abandoned by Cho-young to protect Mak-soon and Soo-hyun. There’s regrets on both sides, but most importantly, there’s closure. Now Bo-gyeom can move on with his life or stick himself into therapy or something. But before moving on, he better apologize to Hae-na’s family and her ancestors for putting them through hell due to his misunderstanding.

Back to our OTP, the wild dogs are poised to attack them, and Seo-won covers Hae-na with his Coat of Protection like she did for him several episodes ago. The dogs literally dissolve into thin air a few seconds later, and since the spell is broken, Hae-na’s full memories return. The couple fall into an “I missed you” embrace, and it looks like we’re back to the swoony endings of the initial episodes.

There was always the possibility that the past life business was hinged on a misunderstanding, and now that this has proven true, I don’t know whether to feel robbed that we were taken for a ride, or relieved that Mak-soon and Soo-hyun were indeed innocent all along. Anyway, I congratulate myself — and the rest of y’all Beanies — for making it this far. Hopefully, now that we’re done with the dark tonal shift, we can return to what is left of the light and fluffy moments in next week’s finale.

I am really hoping for a funny and light hearted ending. This show was amazing until the Mountain God nonsense. He is a very incompetent (why was his woman ever in danger in the first place), immature and petty rendition of a God. I do hope we get lots of cuteness and lots of Yul in the next episode. Maybe I can overlook the last 3-4 episodes and come with a good taste in my mouth about this drama.

So Mountain Spirit jumps to conclusions and hounds innocent people mercilessly. Does that just prove he's a Korean Mountain Spirit?

It somehow makes it worse that this dumb revenge plot was hinged on a misunderstanding, I wish that she had actually sold out her lady 😭😭😭 I'm glad we got the amnesia trope done with though, praying for a light and fluffy ending next week. Legit no other thoughts, I'm kind of tired now 😪😅

This drama took misunderstanding to whole new level - cursing peoples generations after generations, tormenting the reincarnations and even murder attempts. What a mess!
Is there a heavenly court somewhere because Hae-Na and Seo-won needs to sue this poltergeist and take him to the cleaners!

It would be really nice if Yul was Ji-ah's husband in her previous life.

Ohh now that would be interesting, lol.

I don't know how to fit Ji-Ah into things. They've made her three years older than the other students, which puts her on a bit of a higher shelf. But she's the love interest of the Mountain Spirit who is now a teacher, and that...seems off the table as well. Like, sorry, but I cannot possibly see her having a happy ending with the teacher at this point. Can't she just decide to be a kid and become besties with Yul and his friend?

One of the worst, pointless, mostly clip show I have ever seen. It is not even anti-climatic because the one reveal (everyone knew Cho Young killed herself with the sword) just proves that the almighty Mountain Spirit knew or should have know this all along. And he knew they could never be together: he is immortal she was human. Is this the worst case of unrequited love in history? If he can manifest the spirits of the dead, why did he not talk to Cho Young ions ago? We never see the Mountain Spirit destroy the company of archers who would have killed the Young Master and the Servant at the cliff, but how else did she survive to be cursed? And the Mountain Spirit knew the Young Master died on that day - - - so why curse his unborn child? It makes no sense. When the spirits talk about closure of their short fun time together that also made no sense; the Mountain Spirit’s metaphysical powers have no rules but flaws which makes no sense.

After this episode, I wanted to put up a LOST DOG poster in the neighborhood because this series lost its way.

I feel like if the drama has to keep reminding me of HOW GREAT their romance was through constant flashbacks and clip shows, it probably isn't that great?

The drama pretty much made up this entire episode and everything that happened in it. Nothing in it was from the source material.

They really made Bo-geum look terrible--not just mean-spirited, but incompetent. If he has this much power, why didn't he use it to save Cho-young in the first place? How could he not know what really happened? And they dragged out the memory loss thing for soooo long. The comic resolves it much more quickly.

Honestly, I spent the episode taking apart my 1000 piece Advent puzzle and I think that's the only way I could have sat through it.

To be honest I used the FF key a LOT through this episode. Yes and we better get our cuteness back for the last episode.
Just give us more of Yul please.

What a mess of a drama with these last episodes splitting themselves between making no sense and just rerunning prior scenes yet again. I laughed when Young Master and Maid ended up in the woods - they escaped the cliff edge how again? The mountain god is such a horses patoot that I’m not sure I can take this actor seriously again in another show.
It would be nice if the final episode is all new, with all the repeating scenes used since ep 2, I already feel like I’ve watched the show twice 🤦🏼‍♀️

Oh, That's nothing! How do you think we feel, when this show first came on, we started watching it after the first break when they had Episode "0" and we were like, um... why does this show feel like the editing is off? it's moving pretty fast! (not knowing it was a recap of the first 6 or so episodes!) Then we had to rewatch the ACTUAL first six AGAIN to get everything! and then they've flashbacked so many times, I feel like this show will NEVER end!

And "The Most Unsurprising Twist Ever" award goes to!..

I dunno, there's just nothing to grasp onto with this show anymore. Shame, because it started out really cute and fluffy and then descended into bad tropes and even worse execution bingo. Will BG get punished for all his misguided harm or we're just supposed to tearfully embrace and forgive him because this HUNDREDS, IF NOT MORE YEARS powerful immortal spirit didn't know about importance of properly investigating before serving "justice"? Everyone else is gonna be fine, I know it, but I'm afraid I've stopped caring about them, so only my desire to see him getting kicked - the more, the better - still remains.

I think it would have worked better to stay cute and fluffy all the way through. The Moutain God and curse could have been handled and done away with in the first few episodes.

It should've been 10 episodes drama at most with solving curse in Ep8 for good, leaving the last two for more fluff and tying loose ends.

The Vice Principal was a non-event too. Would have been nice if he was part of this deception trope and planned the executions but eventually became roast wolf sous vide but oh well.

Aw, c'mon, the show isn't that bad! I still have a fondness for it, though I admit I would like more time for romance and the silly/funny interactions of the first half. Would love to have seen more of Woo Taek and Yu Na, and I'm also hoping Yul and Ji Ah are headed for happiness. Yul remains my favorite character.

What I miss the most is the beautiful color saturation of the first episodes. Hoping we will see more of that in the finale.

I am less irked at Sad Mountain God because 1) I accept the "mountain spirits are incredibly clueless about human behavior" trope that K-Dramas perpetually use, and 2) Mak-Soon did lead those soldiers straight to her lady immediately after admitting she knew her location.

But I cannot, CANNOT accept how stupid our leads are regarding the ridiculous amnesia spell. Not even a cursory reason was given why Math couldn't just tell Hae-Na what had happened. You know what would have convinced her? How about this sentence: "The dude who cursed your family to turn into dogs after being kissed decided to take away your memory as extra punishment." And for extra punch: "How's your uncle doing? How is he adjusting to life as a human again?"

Instead, our hero's plan to win over his lady love again is to follow her around, look sad, and make mysterious pronouncements about missing pieces. 🙄

I see both sides of the comments here, its not that bad but still kinda bad especially compared to the cute stuff in the beginning. I binged the last couple episodes I missed before so don't know exactly which episode it happened in - but I thought it was pretty obvious when they showed the flashback where the Mountain God turns his back and never actually see's what happened that it was going to be the opposite of what he thought - the Lady sacrifices herself or it was an accident. So that part was like meh for me. But the acting was really good when he finds out the truth I think.

Have to agree with the comments though, that the Mountain God went overboard with the grudge and revenge for not actually figuring out what happened. He could have frozen time to stop the arrows and given the 3 time to escape.

To me the acting is actually keeping me entertained in the darker episodes, but I would rather have to fluffy funny good times from the beginning.

Also agree that there has to be more to Yul - he had to be somewhere in the past.

@unit, thanks for the recap !
Aigoo. I suggest that Bo-gyeom and Vice Principal be brought before a Mountain Spirit Disciplinary Review Board.
Found guilty of action’s unbecoming a Mountain Spirit, unlawful cursing , misuse of Power and being creepy pervs at a High School.
Recommend a demotion to 3rd Rate Garden Gnome for Bo-gyeom and demotion to earthworm for Vice Principal.
