A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 14 (Final)

It’s a good day to end our doggy tale! After bursting out of the gate with the cute and quirky, A Good Day to Be a Dog limps to its end with more filler than cute moments, and more repetitive scenes than new information. But hey, we get a happily ever after, and maybe that’s all that matters for a finale.

EPISODE 14

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 14 (Final)

I should have known this episode was going to be a waste of time when it opened with a one-year time skip. I can just imagine a conversation in the writers’ room that went like: our story has already come to an end, but we still have one episode to go. How do we fill the one hour run time? Then someone goes, “By peppering the episode with flashbacks and filler, of course,” and that’s exactly what they did!

After wrapping up with the Bo-gyeom drama and dog curse, Seo-won and Hae-na have been indulging in the secret dating trope at school. The vice principal and Bo-gyeom have quit, and the school is preparing for a festival. Seo-won’s birthday is on the same day as the festival, and Hae-na is obsessed with coming up with a special and meaningful present.

Seo-won — who has gotten over his dog phobia — mentions that having someone to talk to about his phobia is a bigger present than overcoming the fear, and he thanks her for coming into his life as a present. And this inspires Hae-na to write a play based on their love story for the school festival.

Out of the blue, a dating show PD reaches out to cast Seo-won on her show, but he turns her down. She comes to the school to see him in person, but does more flirting than cajoling. The other teachers encourage Seo-won to go on the show, causing Hae-na to sulk and excuse herself. Seo-won goes after her and we get a slo-mo wrist grab. He’s upset that she didn’t speak up in front of the others. “‘This man is mine. I can’t let him participate in the show.’ Why can’t you say that?” Seo-won fumes, and Hae-na wonders if he’s shooting a drama. Lol.

It’s this drama’s self awareness for me. Because, really, what are we even doing here? Seo-won drags Hae-na back to the staff room for the big “we are dating” announcement, and the other teachers are deadpan. They’ve known about it for a while. *Pretends to be shocked* The PD sashays out like she was never there, and the show goes on. Ha! We really got a whole dating show arc for the big relationship reveal — which fell flat for me, anyway.

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 14 (Final)

Moving on, it’s finally the day of the festival, and the theme is horror. Zombies, undeads, and ghosts parade the grounds, and the vice principal comes around disguised as a virgin ghost. Ji-ah actually lured him to the festival by listing his favorite board game on a second hand site, and when he arrives, she asks him about Bo-gyeom. The vice principal claims not to know the mountain spirit’s whereabouts, but he tells Ji-ah not to look for Bo-gyeom because he has completely forgotten about the secular world. Ha!

Hae-na’s uncle also comes to the festival to get his mind off a breakup. I have no idea how they met, but Uncle was dating Hae-na’s former “rival,” and fellow teacher, Chae-ah. It’s bad enough that she was only dating him for his money (apparently, the price of some stocks Uncle bought 18 years ago skyrocketed), but it’s worse that she didn’t even hear him speak for the entire one week (!) duration of their relationship. They eventually broke up when she heard him bark — because he still can’t speak.

Hae-na leaves Uncle in Seo-won’s care to go prepare for the play, and she tells him to come watch the play when it starts. But when Uncle sees the vice principal who stole his voice, Uncle runs after him and Seo-won follows after them in a ridiculous slow motion chase. Unfortunately, the vice principal isn’t able to reverse the spell on Uncle, and Seo-won has to go drop off a disappointed Uncle back at home.

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 14 (Final)

Hae-na’s play is titled: A Man and a Woman Who Became a Gift for Each Other, and Yul is the lead actor. It’s a cute shadow play, but since Seo-won isn’t in the audience, Hae-na has the play recorded, and she sends it to him for a private viewing. Then we sit with Seo-won in his car, get more flashback scenes that show us the Seohae love story all over again and re-watch the shadow play we saw just minutes ago!

Man, this drama has the most creative ways to make sure we don’t forget Hae-na and Seo-won’s love story, as well as all the tribulations they faced. The play ends up being the best birthday present Seo-won has ever received, and the couple share a kiss under the flickering streetlights.

And just because we can’t end the drama without seeing Bo-gyeom, Ji-ah visits him at a beachfront house where he’s leisurely sipping coffee like he didn’t just spend hundreds of years harassing an innocent family. Is this supposed to be the non-secular life that Bo-gyeom is living? Anyway, Ji-ah tells him that she’s moving past the whole past life drama, and that he should do the same. Bo-gyeom and Ji-ah send off paper lanterns in lieu of the kites Bo-gyeom and Cho-young were supposed to fly in Joseon, and this is where their story concludes.

Hae-na’s family adopts a dog, and Seo-won names him Duk-gu — which was the name of Cho-young’s dog. Woo-taek and Yoo-ra get engaged and plan their wedding. I’m not sure how, but uncle gets his voice back. He properly breaks up with Chae-ah… and then they get back together. As for our OTP, their relationship is stronger than ever, and everybody basically just lives happily ever after. The end.

*Inhale, exhale* We survived, guys! A Good Day to Be a Dog had the potential to be a better show than what we got, especially since it was adapted from cute and light source material. Making the drama about eight to ten episodes might have made for a tighter story with little to no avenues for missteps. Unfortunately, the drama was stretched out too thin, and the early preemptions and single episode per week scheduling didn’t do it any favors. In the end, I have no attachment or lingering feelings towards the show. I’m just glad the drama is over and we can all move on.

The cost of eight wasted hours.
The first eight were a fine little drama.

I even think the ominous presence of the mountain god guy in some of the early chapters was promising a good, thrilling explanation, but it was like in so many K-dramas that tracks were laid out for something that never happened.
I thought he was somehow was destined for a life that he then took out on random human beings: When he talked about the tide and being drawn towards and away from someone you loved, ruled by laws you did not understand, like the sea and the shore under the moon, it seemed so sad, angry and ominous I think that actor could have pulled that off, in this strange to and fro between being so cute and so ominous.

Really, this is an okay drama if you just stop after episode 8.
There will still be the mysterious Mountain God question, but watching the solution of that is not more satisfying than just stating: He was angry. But there was no reason to be so. He found out and stopped. The End.
The dog story was pretty cute, I think.
I watched episode 9 and decided to keep an eye on recaps and reactions to see if I ought to come back - I hoped so, actually but ... episode 8 is the right place to stop.

It would have made more sense if the Mountain Tiger would have been angry if the Young Master-Servant betrayal caused the KIng to burn down his forest and destroy his spiritual home (so he had to wander in the human world for centuries as a bitter demigod.)

I just put myself in the shoes of a Lurker-Beanie from the future (in truth, by thinking about how I behaved as a Lurker-Beanie back in the day). I'd have They'll come here to the recap of the last episode of this drama to find out if it had a happy ending and how the recapper summarized the experience in order to decide whether or not to invest my their time.

I would have This future Lurker-Beanie will be faced with this, absolutely damning conclusion from @unit, making it clear that I would have they will never, ever hit play on It's a Good Day to Be a Dog:

The webtoon had a meandering structure, and I can sort of understand that, since you're doling out the story in tiny bits at a time (drawing takes time!), and it goes on over a long period of time, and stories change in the writing thereof. But. The drama had the advantage of knowing the whole story from the start, and therefore the drama-makers had the chance to make it tighter and make more sense. Only...they did not do that. I don't remember the one-year time jump or the recap of the entire drama from the webtoon, either.

The characters were cute, but they should have either ended the drama once they got together and used his love for her to propel him to get over his dog trauma OR threaded the past life story along better instead of sticking it at the end. Ah, well. Some sweet moments and the actors did a good job with what they had. But that's the second webtoon-based drama I've finished in a row where I get to the last episode and I'm left scratching my head and wondering if I'm smart enough to understand where this ending came from.

I'm not gonna lie, I fast forwarded through a lot of this ep. The play made me cringe. I feel like there are so many flashbacks I have seen every part of the romance ten times, and it wasn't even that good the first time. I also really hope they weren't implying a romance between shaman girl and Bo-geum

This is such a disappointment, I was literally looking forward to this drama for years. Why didn't they just keep the webcomic's story arcs?

I like that OST track "Imagine" though.

Same! I used the ff liberally because I couldn't bring myself to watch the play without dying on the actors' behalf. (And honestly, I kept thinking would this story actually work as a wordless play??? Wouldn't everyone just be, "Whaaaaat???") Then, more ff was added for the unrelenting repetition, and for Bo-gyeom who I just couldn't care less about. Think I got through that ep in about 15 mins...

I don't understand the trope of one year jump when the leads act like they were still in their beginning phase of dating... Everybody knew for the colleagues who married at the beginning of drama and they thought they could do better? Instead to get the leads finally dating in broad daylight with dates, etc. we got a non really secret relationship like teenagers. What is the idea to make dating adults like teenagers in Kdrama?

The drama moment was from Lovers in Paris with Jo Sung-Mo's OST To Your Side. It was quite weird to get it in this drama but they were clearly lacking ideas to fill the episode, so why not?

In a general way, I don't think the drama really suffered from the one episode by week thing, because it was clearly not the main issue. The story didn't make sense, CEW's acting was weak, there wasn't cuteness enough, and way too many flashbacks with the same scenes.

It's almost like the producers put him in dramas as eye candy and don't expect anything else from him. I cannot believe the directors are not watching and seeing these wooden performances in real-time, and they don't ask for more emotion from him.

Required fields are marked *

Maybe you are the one who can't get past his looks and reduce him to eye candy. He did just fine as teacher Seowon...... a reserved character with a dog trauma who doesn't need to overact. One thing is for sure ,you are no expert and do no know more than the directors.

0

Agreed that CEW can't emote. I get being a fan of someone, but that doesn't mean they're good at all things. I have no idea how someone, even a fan, could watch his performance and not think that his acting was lacking. Here it was IMO particularly an issue because so much of the romance hinges on Seo-ha becoming more emotive and expressive over time. That being said, I don't know much is him versus the director. I agree with a previous comment here that said it's mainly the director's responsibility.

And, no, I don't hate CEW, but I don't think he should keep getting cast in lead roles that require him to show a lot of emotion unless he either works on his acting or gets a director who can lead him better. I will say that, in addition to being very good-looking, he did very well in the kissing scenes,

Required fields are marked *

@emly20 I literally had never seen anything he was in prior to this drama. I really wanted to find his performance amazing because I was very excited for this drama and wanted all of the acting to be strong. Yes, I criticized his acting a lot in the discussions here but that's because it really did detract from my viewing experience.

I don't think he's a good actor (at least as a romantic lead, maybe there are roles he's better in) but that doesn't mean I dislike him. Plenty of people aren't good actors and have value outside of that. Also, it's not like my comments are going to hurt him or his career, he'll be just fine.

1

I understand that people don't like to read criticism of their favourite actor, but calling someone a hater when they legitimately mention the wooden acting doesn't reflect well on CEW's fans and indirectly harms him as well.

"What is the idea to make dating adults like teenagers in Kdrama?"

I know SK is a conservative society, but the way writers portray consenting adults as shy teenagers having to seek the approval of their elders to even enter a relationship in the first place often borders on the absurd. I watched one recently where the parents of a 35 and 40-year-old didn't even want them to date.

It’s like Yul warning Haena to get out of his new driver Uncle’s car when they were trapped on the motorway!

‘I should have known this episode was going to be a waste of time when it opened with a one-year time skip’ 👈🏾 yes that summed up the whole episode. The shadow play was very good but it became the equivalent of the random inserts of a body drop in other dramas, we got it the first time.

This drama suffer from some epic identity crisis if I've ever seen one. In a "nobody asked for this" attempt to add their own twists to the (I believe) simple and fluffy plot of source material writers kept piling up stuff until it was too much of everything - and yet not enough of substance to justify the existence of this trope salad. The end result? Probably an indigestion and lasting barking reflex. Should've really end it on Ep8 and that's it. Shame that's not what happened...

Uncle deserved better - than both that chick as a girlfriend (at least he's consistent with his poor taste in women, I guess) and having to bark for a whole extra year because no one bothered to care about that little detail. Yul deserved better than not having any life outside of being there for other people's drama and experiencing multiple unrequited crushes (I mean, he IS crushing on Jiah now? or they're just good friends? show didn't make it clear). Oh well, at least he's got a real dog now... Leads chemistry deserved better. BG didn't deserve anything nice - let alone that peaceful seaside retirement life - for being the dumb spiteful jerk he is but I suppose mountain gods in kdramas are really plot armored by default against any retribution for their crap. All in all, we deserved a much better show, but alas...

Shooting the drama scene was fun. Wasn't worth it to waste an hour of my life to get there tho. Previous 13 could've been spent on something less messy too. Why this ALWAYS happens when I'm trying to give romcoms another chance? Are you trying to tell me to just give up for good, universe?

I think they should have done 12 episodes - 10 for the main story, 11 for the amnesia, end of ep 11 or beginning of ep 12 him (I maintain that changing the person who lost their memories was a huge mistake so in my version it would be him, lol) remembering, and then ep 12 for fluffiness.

True, but if they kept Seo-won's family stuff they could have had enough material for 12 episodes. I think I would have done like 8 for the romance, ep 9 for the Bo-geum offering Hae-na a choice, ep 10 for Joseon backstory. But you could fit that into 10 eps easily as well. I feel like I don't see a lot of 10 ep dramas, though? Seems like 12 or 16 is the usual choice.

Maybe 10 is not seen as an auspicious number for some reason? I know that 4 is not a good one and 18 sounds like a curse word in Korean...

3

Thank god this ended. It finally limped across finish line. There are some bad drama you watch because they are so bad they are good , some of them are train-wrecks from which you can not take your eyes off and some of them you watch out of morbid curiosity to see how bad it can get.

This drama belongs to third category for me.....

Weird complaint considering the whole nature of the show, but I wish the drama never actually went to the Joseon & past lives path. I would have loved it a lot more if it was just a cute silly rom-com with some loose/last minute explanation on why Hae Na transformed into a dog after the kiss.

I dropped the show and webtoon when they took that overly complicated direction. Some shows are just not meant to be angsty and dramatic. The dog drama is one of those.

Yeah I agree. I think they could have just left it that her ancestor did something wrong in the past which is why the family were cursed. Then maybe Bo-gyeom was the equivalent to the witch character in Beauty and the Beast who came back to check on the family, saw they were good people behaving well and so lifted the curse.

I don't think the Joseon arc in itself was the issue, it's how the drama handled it. The drama made it FAR more angsty and higher stakes than it was in the webcomic, and dragged out the resolution much longer. In the webcomic it's fairly short and resolves pretty quickly.

More clips and a time skip. SeoHa couple has not advanced their relationship in a full Year? Still secret dating at school? And Uncle now lost his voice because of the Vice Principal but he is now wealthy stock investor? Yes, again, the show makes little sense even in the confines of its own world building. Even the little things like HaeNa typing on an English keyboard was annoying. A lack of attention to detail. Or the fantasy element that HaeNa can bang out an original play in a few hours. The finale seemed to be an OST PPL. The last few episodes were very disjointed and not very rewarding.

This series had all the elements to be a good story: a comedy-romance at a high level. The director and writer hinted at them but failed to execute any real plan. We did not need the Curse backstory in order to tension between the leads. KISS: Keep it simple stupid. Just HN and SW overcoming their fears would have been enough. And after the curse was lifted, if HN kept certain dog traits (like the uncle did) then it would have been a funny dating theme that could have been quite enjoyable (like the couple hand in hand until a car passes by and HN quickly runs after it.) It could have been better if SW overcame his fear of dogs while caring and adapting to HN’s latent dog traits until their mutual love cured her. But instead we got no advancement of their relationship, no unique moments or a clear resolution of their story. The ending was bleh.

I blame the writer and director, but also the network for treating the show like a rabid dog: once a week on dead night in TV schedule, many preemptions, and an overdose on past clips in current episodes. The story meandered like a lost puppy. I don't blame the actors; they were given no meat on the bone. This was not a show that could have been better, it was a show that SHOULD have been better. Quite the disappointment.

I loved this drama at the beginning. I would still recommend. Just watch episodes 1-8 and the finale. It is really too bad they went for the mountain God nonsense instead of maybe more cute content of secondary couples, as well as potentially conflict from uncle almost dying, or even something where the curse was broken when one put their life for the other to "prove their love" as the original curse said. Bo Gyrom finding out the real story and then helping them out, so many better avenues to extend to the 14 episode count. Sorry to see how much of a fail the last few episodes were.

I think they must have paid some shadow puppet masters a lot of money so to get their money’s worth they showed us the play and then showed us him watching the play. I didn’t need a play of a recap of a show which kept recapping itself. My memory may be weak and my attention span poor but I don’t actually need to see the whole show in repeat flashbacks multiple times to remember why I got tired of watching this. A tighter show with more respect for the audience would have made it 10 episodes long. Sigh.

How lame that the fox was unable to break his own curse and the poor uncle was stuck like that for over a year. It was unnecessary. His storyline which was not in the webtoon was only necessary in the beginning to bring tension and pathos but did nothing in the end except filler.

So everyone in this room pretty well agrees this drama is a 'fail'? I agree about the meandering last three episodes, but I quite enjoyed the story concept and even liked the leads. More important, I'm glad I watched all the way to the boring repetitious last episode because it was Cha Eun Woo's best. Likely because his character was exonerated from his actions in that deadly previous life, and also he was finally over his fear of dogs. Which meant at the end he didn't have to play so 'serious' anymore. The writer or director finally allowed him to smile in that last scene with Hae Na. You could tell on his face that he was relaxed and at his best having some lighter dialogue, even flirt- teasing with her, and that great kiss scene wasn't as tentative as their early ones, although must say he was in the driver's seat for all those earlier kisses though. As for the plot...aaargh...I had such hopes when the Joseon period arrived. I love the fusion of modern mixed with historical to set up the character's wounds in their future lives'. But the problem for me was that the main leads fell for each other so quickly when they met. No small steps to show why they liked each other so much, which distanced me a bit from caring about their relationship. Yet it was a whole other story for me when it was our Mountain God bonding with the young widow who lost her baby. Their story had all the elements necessary for me to forgive him for being such a jerk-spirit in the present. I grew to care for them more and more as she tied his hair in side braids when he lay his head in her lap. Also their conversation about her dead baby and how he got her through the numness of her grief. And best of all, how she taught him 'to play' with each other. I quite empathized with the dark, brooding loneliness of Bo Gyeom that was exposed in the past because of the bright cheerful armour he wore as the school's favourite teacher in the present. He was definitely the double-edged sword of this drama's plot. Lee Hyun-woo delivered an awesome best performance...especially the brittle & bitter anger he felt towards the leads...all because of a misunderstanding. Very sad. Especially since that skewed perception about how his love was taken from him, made his heart so twisted that he missed the opportunity to renew their relationship when they met again. It was THAT bit of plotting out of this whole story that stuck with me. I'll likely remember it longer than the early part of this drama. So I can't join everyone in dismissing this show. There were parts I liked and parts I clenched through...so again, like our Mountain God, this double-edged drama was confusing and quite a bit unsatisfying for me in the end.

Thanks for sharing this alternative perspective. If you could post a non spoilery review you would help out future beanies as it’s likely a lot of the reviews will be negative or there won’t be enough to help them gain an overview.
