[K-drama Treasure Hunt] Swoony hand touching

Welcome to the K-drama treasure hunt, where we all go looking for K-drama treasure in the form of tiny drama details that we know and love. Sometimes these details take the shape of well-worn tropes (oppa Band-Aiding) or storytelling devices (Top Secret Deadly Allergy), but other times it’s just details we know we’ve seen in other dramas, but need help putting all the clues together.

Each week we’ll put you on the hunt for a piece of K-drama treasure, and you can report your findings in the comments.

There’s no umpire in this game, so if you find the detail we’re looking for, drop the drama title (or even better, drama title + episode number) in the comments, and we’ll all take your word for it. Or, we’ll go binge watch just to see it play out.

And remember, we’re here to map our way to the treasures not to the plot twists! We know how exciting it can be to have all the hard-earned details stashed in your head, but let’s try to keep the spoilers out of the comments.

This week’s treasure:

Swoony hand touching

Your mission:

Find all those great, romantic, and — above all — swoony scenes of hand skinship that just about make you fall off your chair. From fingers interlaced to barely grazing at the outer edges, heart-fluttery hand touching is what dramas do best. Whether it’s a sweet surprise or permission is sought, any form of swoony handholding will be considered a winner in this round.

Reference drama:

Marry My Husband (Episode 9)

Um, definitely The Matchmakers when the two leads’ hands meet as they are hanging up bachelor names for the Maeng sisters! When their fingertips almost interlace and they both just freeze there for a long moment *sigh*

If you want "swoony innocent touching or almost touching" scenes Austen is really the way to go in general. The Darcy hand flex (which granted isn't in the novel but still), the Persuasion carriage lift... oh man.

I almost think Darcy is more in our imagination than in the novel, particularly as *ahem* Colin Firth. #iykyk

Oh, this is no contest for me. The Matchmakers, episode 6.

Our lead couple is planning the matches for the three Maeng sisters in their secret planning lair, and their hands accidentally touch on a string on which is hung the names/numbers of the possible suitors. Their fingers then gently trace one another's, and their faces show a type of innocent but transfixed, intentionality...

Something in the Rain : When the FL hold ML's hand under the table in a bar.

Healer : The scene at the theatre when she's leaving and when he's sleeping at her house and he let fall his pyjama and they tried to get it back at the same time, their hands touched

She Would Never Know : When the FL and the SML are waiting in front of the elavator and his girlfriend got out from the elevator. She doesn't look happy to see them together, so ML took the hand of the FL and they left together to kill any doubts. There was another elevator scene, I think.

Extraordinary You : When Danoh can't help herself to hold Haru's hand :D

Destined With You had a lot of hands moments, I liked the one in the taxi when the FL was drunk and told her story.

The Healer scene at the theater is one of my most rewatched Kdrama scenes.

The pajama scene - I don't remember the pajamas, but I remember they both reached for something at the same time, and when she touched his hand, she realized it felt the same as Healer's. Same touch, same heart flutters.

THE BEST HIT ep 25. ML pulls FL by the hand when a car passed too close as they walk home. He doesn't let go and continues walking, then interlaces their fingers. It's a lot more swoony than how I describe it, I swear!

EXTRAORDINARY ATTORNEY WOO- holding hands through the office glass window scene in ep 11, when Jun Ho oh so casually leans his palm against said window and Young Woo initiates and gets to explore “touching” his hand without the sensory overload her autistic character would feel with actually holding his hand. It was swoony.

In My Unfamiliar Family, as their relationship is changing, Eun-hee and Chan-hyuk are walking side by side and their hands are brushing. Finally, Chan-hyuk just breaks through the unspoken boundary. He takes her hand firmly, and breaks out in a big, happy grin.

Also While You Were Sleeping, ep. 10, when Hong-joo is standing on the curb across from her workplace, hesitating to go back, Jae-chan comes up without a word, takes her hand, and leads her across the street. It's not just helping her follow through with her decision, it's also the pivotal moment when he decides to follow his feelings instead of his fears.

MR QUEEN, later episode (maybe 18? 19?):
The King takes our Queen to some sort of “holiday estate” outside the palace, and there, their hands touch. And since she doesn’t flinch away (… or curses 😂), he dares to interlace fingers. 🫰

One of my favorite Asian drama tropes is when the male lead reaches out a hand to the female lead, he ALMOST makes it, he's ALMOST there - but then he changes his mind, makes a fist, and lowers his hand, all without her knowing he was about to touch her. I'm trying to think of specific scenes, but you all know the one I mean. I like to mime it to my husband.

This is not remotely helpful to OP but I just wanted to bring it up. As a consolation prize, let me say that there's a scene in My Holo Love where the male lead grabs the female lead's hand to run away, and it's a really pivotal and emotional moment for a lot of reasons. I can't say more without giving the story away...

There’s 2 scenes like that in Because This Is My First Life. In one the leads are walking side by side, ML clearly eyes female leads hand, almost reaches out but holds back. In another scene they walk side by side again, and this time FL reaches out not once, but twice only to give up and make a fist and then he reaches out to take her hand instead.
In fact that drama has lots of hands moments, ML is always extending his hand to the FL to comfort her.

There’s one of these scenes in SOMETHING IN THE RAIN, too. They are in a car, he’s driving. She has her hand on the arm rest between them and he contemplates taking it *swoons* - then chickens out! *aaaws!*
On that same evening (I think), he tries to even lay an arm around her shoulder *swoons!* - then chickens out again! *booos!!*

The rain finally gives him enough courage. 👏😉🫰

Kdramas are very rich of hand-touching moments, but the most memorable to me is still and always the one in Autumn Tale, when Song Hye Kyo's and Song Seong Heon's characters leaning on each other back to back, cleaning the windows, and their fingers slowly moved toward each other's. It's the first moment they acknowledged their romantic feeling for the other person. It's been more than 20 years since I first watched this show and probably more than 10 years since I last watched it, but this scene still imprinted on my mind.
Here it is https://i.imgur.com/hYubUlB.gif

And bonus: a funny hand touching scene of many beanies' first K-bias :-) It's from the same show.

My forever favorite drama "Golden Pouch". Love Dr. Han Seok Hoon and Geum Seol Hwa's magical onscreen chemistry and I have watched the show more than 50 times, their amazing onscreen chemistry makes me very happy. In episode 31, the heart flutters scene when he pulls her towards him and holding her hands for the first time, showing his genuine affection for her.

I 100% agree with the under the table hand-holding in "Something in the Rain."

The OST from "Touch Love" immediately came to mind!

City Hall: the couple are in their angst stage, riding in the back of a car. Cha Seung-won's pinky finger grazes Kim Sun-Ah's. And the tears and longing that miniscule touch brings to them and us...

I have several but two immediately came to mind:

Judge vs Judge: Episode 16. When they are walking home at night on her first day of resumption and in the final slo-mo of them running to work.

Hospital Playlist 2: an earlier Episode and Episode 11. Songhwa and Ikjun are running away from the rain and end up holding hands when they leap at the same time. In Ep. 11, when Ikjun is injured and Songhwa runs up to him in a panic and holds his hand **squeals!!**

Honorable Mention: Marry My Husband Ep 11, the hand touch at work 🤭

By the way, can we do a Treasure Hunt on charged moments between characters viewed by others? Like when Iksun saw Songhwa and Ikjun playing the card game 🥰🥰🥰
