Im Soo-hyang is Ji Hyun-woo’s Belle in Beauty and Mr. Romantic

New teasers are out for KBS’s rom-com weekender Beauty and Mr. Romantic, which has gone through name changes like an incognito royal on the run. Formerly Beauty and the Devoted, and then the very literal Beauty and the Pure Guy, the drama has now decided to spotlight the heart of our Prince Charming in its latest title.

It’s another day at work for our leading man Ji Hyun-woo (Young Lady and Gentleman), and the chyron introduces him as Go Pil-seung, a rookie assistant PD who’s still wet behind the ears. As he waits for the elevator, he takes a call from a friend and shares some life updates about the drama he’s currently working on.

The star of the show is top actress Park Do-ra, played by Im Soo-hyang (Kokdu: Season of Deity), but just the mere mention of her name elicits an exasperated sigh from Pil-seung. Apparently, she gives the crew so much trouble that they’ve given her a new moniker amongst themselves, not-so-subtly referring to the way she never fails to raise their heckles.

As Pil-seung rants away, he suddenly feels a chill down his spine, and he turns around to find Do-ra smiling ominously at him, having heard every word. “Are you done cursing me out?” Do-ra asks wryly, and Pil-seung can only swallow nervously in response.

Elevators seem to be a hot spot for conflict, because the second teaser has Pil-seung boarding one, meekly bowing his head when he realizes Do-ra is already inside, and turning away to hide a barely-suppressed grimace. His fear isn’t unfounded, because Do-ra has a litany of complaints that she isn’t afraid to make known. She’s fed up with the main PD for his endless retakes and lack of preparation, and she wants Pil-seung to be the messenger.

Set on getting her way, Do-ra sulks that she’ll refuse to film any more if a scene exceeds three takes. All Pil-seung can do is acquiesce obediently, in order to appease the disgruntled Do-ra. That is, until the elevator doors open to reveal the main PD on the other side. In the blink of an eye, Do-ra’s demeanor does a 180 — her frown widens into a beatific smile as she greets the PD in a high-pitched aegyo tone, leaving a dumbfounded Pil-seung speechless. Ha, Do-ra may be the bane of Pil-seung’s existence right now, but if the show’s newest poster is any indication, she’s on the way to becoming his Belle.

Helmed by PD Hong Seok-gu (Homemade Love Story) and writer Kim Sa-kyung (Young Lady and Gentleman), who previously collaborated on My Only One, Beauty and Mr. Romantic premieres on March 23.

Interesting the poster is such a copy of Beauty and the Beast. That dress is straight off Belle. Connection between the plots is unclear though.

Perms. Sigh.

They would get away with this as copyright law would only protect identical recreation and this leaves room for differences.

It won't be a kdrama if ML doesn't get a haircut makeover midway the show! Fine, prime-time dramas may be kinda past this iconic trope, but not the good old weekenders)))

I'm really not a fan of Im Soo-hyang's (Thanks to Kkokdu's Season)...but I gotta say that it's the setup of this weekender that might have me coming back for more, even after the disappointment many of us are feeling with LYOL.

This--while still being a weekender, I realize--seems like a very different premise from LYOL and ISH's character being petulant and pushy rather than simpering and passive (as she was in Kkokdu) might be her strength.

I think I'm in. Who else from the LYOL crew is coming along? @oldawyer, surely. @dorotka? @kathryn51? @dncingemma? @asha13? @al118? @welh640? @johnb? Others who I should be mentioning???

Who's holding out hope for this to be, as OldLawyer says, "One of the greats??" Anyone?

Will we have new weekender converts? I know there are some weekender lurkers who don't join in on the recaps...

My attitude can best be described as 'skeptically optimistic'. There are reasons to think that this show may avoid some of flaws of the previous couple of weekenders.

That being said we really have no idea how good the show can be until we start watching it.

After only 2 weekenders under my belt, I have concluded that weekender "main couples" do not appeal to me. In fact, the whole "I'm not perfect, but I'm more perfect than any other character" (Tae Ho/Hyo Shim or the TRHC couple that I can't remember their names) is just not for me.

@oldawyer said long ago that he watches a weekender for 8 episodes and then makes up his mind to continue. He has become Lucy to my Charlie Brown, lol. 😂😂😂 but I'm glad I stuck with LYOL.

So, @attiton, I will likely read the recaps and the comments (especially the names you highlighted), but I'm not getting up early in the morning to watch un-subbed Kokowa and then the sub version (either Kocowa or Viki) later in the day. If the show totally upends the requisite "sweet/puppy" loveline, then maybe after Ep. 20 I'll give it a try. But based on the synopsis, this will not draw me in.

Frankly, LYOL kept me interested for one reason: The Mystery of Daegwallyeong Pass. Writer-nim - with only a handful of exceptions - maintained consistency with that story and my hat is off to her.

Looking forward to everyone comments/analysis. 😊😊

I am sticking with LYOL because I want to see what happens to the true Protagonist of that drama- who is not the Romantic Lead but rather his older brother Tae-min. Does Tae-min get his own life, finally? Or will that writer let us down and only give the FL a happy ending?

The truth is that LYOL actually comes with a much more interesting dramatic structure- but that probably makes a proper resolution much more difficult.

I think that I am also considering a new criteria as well: If the great majority of characters are both unlikeable and irredeemable then you are not going to enjoy the show. That was the real reason I ditched REVOLUTIONARY SISTERS after eight episodes, and I remain convinced that it was absolutely the right decision.

Tae-min is a major reason I keep tuning into the recaps and comments despite dropping the show—the arc of a flawed, tragic character felt much more interesting to me. I hope he gets his own life too.

Dysfunctional workplace instead of dysfunctional families? I must be a glutton for punishment because — even after being burned by two weekenders in a row — i’m thinking of pressing play.

I’ll invite myself to the party. TRHC was my first weekender—and I wrestled with it far longer than I should have before dropping. So I admitted defeat much sooner for LYOL. I’m hoping third time is the charm even tho I’ve dropped all three of Im Soo-hyang’s shows: Gangnam Beauty, Kokdu and Woori.

I respect what OldLawyer says about Weekenders quite a bit but have to express my skepticism about his qualified hopefulness. If this remains coherent, it would be amazing. My bar is very low after the two consecutive ones which I’ve watched.

I guess I did not emphasize the "skeptical" part enough. I would like to say that while I encourage people to try this show I also encourage them to drop it if it is not entertaining.

I am skeptical because the stated premise of this show would not normally justify fifty episodes- It would usually take no more than 16 at the most. There has to be more to this story than that- but we have only the barest hints of that. The biggest hint is that the complete cast lineup gives us fully fleshed out families for both of the lead characters. Whether the show stands or falls will actually depend upon how the writer and PD use all of those other characters. And this is actually the story of the two weekenders that you have watched:

By the end of the story of TRHC most of the 'side characters' had become little more than furniture with their stories untold or abandoned.

In the current weekender which is winding down we see many characters whose stories were begun and then left hanging. While at least we have been entertained with constant surprises the result has not been a truly coherent story but rather one filled with improbable events, etc. It has at least been more entertaining than TRHC but certainly not great storytelling. Again, the 'side characters have been underutilized although I would add on the plus side the unique experiment in having two male leads: A romantic male lead in Tea-ho and a dramatic male lead or protagonist in Tae-min (who is the true male counterpart to our FL). Between that (in my opinion successful) innovation plus the surprise factor the current weekender is in fact a substantial improvement over TRHC (in addition to avoiding the blunder of time skips which have no place in an ensemble drama) but will never be ranked as one of the best of the weekenders.

So, I am skeptical as much as I am hopeful. Even though this writer gave as the last weekender that was a hit commercially with YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN I have still not forgiven that writer for inflicting not one but two amnesia arcs upon us. However, that show did have its share of actually likeable characters and the writer fully understood the ensemble nature of weekenders. I have reason for both hope and skepticism.

It will really all come down to how well the other characters are dealt with and whether we get enough side plots with them to turn a 16 episode plot idea into an entertaining fifty episode family drama.

I am not impressed because the premise has been done before in shorter series and the writer has a fetish for amnesia tropes. But I will try to watch it if it is bearable.

I have a very soft spot for Ji Hyun Woo, whom in my opinion played the best k-drama male lead ever in Queen In Hyun's Man long, long ago. He was the reason I watched my first weekender (Young Lady and Gentleman), which despite all the crazy over the top makjang-ness,.......I actually quite enjoyed (with the FF button liberally used)! I really don't like the FL though, although that's mainly because I watched Kokdu from start to finish. 😬 So I might dip my toes in and out and see how it goes......

I am not a weekender person but I might try this one. Im Soo-hyang Is a hit or miss for me. I think she does well in bratty or with attitude roles. I liked her in ‘Five enough’ and ‘Graceful family’.
I thought weekenders usually have a large cast with multiple arcs, but I don’t recollect seeing the other cast in promos? Or May be I missed it.

Bingo- you have just hit on my major concern. But this may be simply an advertising decision.

I did glance at the article for this on MyDramalist and it does show at least 20 characters total, plus a couple of child actors who play the leads in their childhoods. I believe that at least the child actors were shown in a previous promo- and I will take a 'childhood connection' trope over a stupid time skip every time.

As for Im Soo-hyang I thought she was just wonderful in MY ID IS GANGNAM BEAUTY as well as GRACEFUL FAMILY. She also did a good job in her previous weekender FIVE ENOUGH and would have been noticed even more there if it were not that everyone was overshadowed by The Golfer Couple (Shin Hye-sun and Sung Hoon): They stole the show even over the main central couple and I would point out that it was one of the best weekenders that we have seen.

Please note that both the actor who plays the ML and the actress who plays the FL have experience with weekenders.

I think Im Soo-hyang started her career starred as FL in the 2011 weekender New Tales of the Gisaeng along with Sung Hoon, that drama was pretty popular and got both stars noticed. As a newcomer, she did a good job in emotional scenes there and she had good chemistry with Sung Hoon. The story itself was typical Makjang. Hopeful she will do well this time.

I will be watching. At the very least nothing about the plot idea suggests a need for a murder to take place, a serial killer, a Chaebol Family Civil War or a time skip.

The writer gave us the most recent Weekender which was a ratings hit: YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN, whose ML was played by the same actor as will play the ML role here. The PD has worked with the writer before. So far, so good.

That being said: If the writer serves up two amnesia arcs again, I may look into booking tickets to Korea for the sole purpose of boxing writer-nim's ears. At the very least I will be sending a Stiff Note.

Concerns: a fifty-episode family drama requires more than just the two central characters- what will be served up along with the central plotline? That plotline would more normally fit a 12 or 16 episode show: There had better be a lot more.

Is taking a role in a Weekender in anyway indicative of being in less demand? For instance, if your last drama bombs, does it reduce your employability in more prestigious dramas?

Loads of top actors are in weekenders especially in the older age range, I think it keeps them in the public eye as they are so popular.

If your last drama bombs it reduces your employability in any drama.

There are probably many reasons for taking on a Weekender. One might be the opportunity for steadier work but sometimes it can also be a hope for a comeback.

Our male lead actor is not lacking in popularity. Ji Hyun-woo has had many lead roles- and this will be his third weekender. His career has definitely not hit the skids. In his case I suspect that it is the steady work which he finds attractive while at the same time he can space dramas far enough out to accommodate his other career as a singer.

I think you are right. Ji Hyun Woo started out his career as a guitarist and spent the last 3 years having fun releasing indie music with his brother and mates.

In the past, the three major networks cast their own stable of actors for weekenders. You may still see references in old interviews that this person was "the daughter of KBS." I don't think ratings are part of casting for weekenders because of the ensemble nature of the product. Some actors like weekenders for the steady work. Younger actors like them as a way of becoming well known to bolster their career path towards leading roles and film work.

All your points are bang on! I'm definitely interested in following along with this one. I do hope you won't need to box anyone's ears. 😳 I have a sneaking suspicion that a Stiff Note may be required.
Hopefully we'll get many more characters and their storyline.

I am confused as the female lead seems to be the beast and the male lead the ‘beauty’ who rescues her from a life of rejection by the masses aka the behind the scenes crew.

I doubt that there is any real connection between the drama and the fairy story. I actually think that it is actually drawn as a contrast with that other story. We see Im Soo-Hyang in Belle's dress but rather than a Beast we see a man who is dressed in a style completely different from the Disney version of that character- and really handsome as well. It is essentially a parody: Rather than BEAUTY AND THE BEAST we see BEAUTY AND THE HUNK as it were. It is simply an eye-catching visual gimmick.
