Did You Know? Character Limits on Dramabeans Comments Edition Did you know that there are different character limits for different types of comments and posts on Dramabeans? Some of these limits are “breakable” and others are not.
1. Fan Wall Main Posts
Many of us have overcome the (apparent) 200-character limit on all Fan Wall OP posts. If you have not, instructions for how to do that are simple, and spelled out by yours truly here: https://www.dramabeans.com/members/attiton/activity/1452362/.
TL;DR: Paste in your content from elsewhere, but don’t use your keyboard to do it, use the contextual menu revealed via your mouse or by force-pressing.
But! As @sicarius reminded the newbs in, um, 2020…there’s still actually something like a 20,000 character limit on the Fan Wall posts. EVEN MORE still, long Fan Wall posts can start pressuring WordPress to break down at about 9,000 characters. So, stick to below 9,000 characters is the advice @sicarius offers. Apparently she broke Dramabeans once.
2. Comments Anywhere Else
Apart from OP Fan Wall posts, there’s a 3,000 character limit on all other comments. So, whether you’re replying directly to a Fan Wall Post or a Main Site Post, or replying to a comment on a Fan Wall Post or a Main Site Post, you’ve got 3,000 characters before you get that dreaded ellipsis (“…”) that cuts you off in mid-sentence.
There’s no workaround for this one, but we want to hear what you have to say!! So, simply reply to your own comment, and finish your thought. Done!
Or, if you like, you can check beforehand to see if your commentary will fit in one comment by using Word or a text editor to count your characters beforehand. A quick internet search shows that there are any number of free, but ad-filled, sites that will do it for you too.
PS: Another tip from Sic. Emojis count for two characters! I believe her, but even though I sort of work in this industry for real, I didn’t know that!! Seems technically plausible! Thanks, 친구!
Thank you, Seon-ha, for another amazing post with valuable guides and information 🌻❤️ I broke the limit for a comment once or twice, but have never come close to the limit for a Fan Wall post.
There is a group working on getting all the info on a google document and we will need to save the link and share with the beanies who send out a call for help. Hopefully this link will work:
Absolutely! @attiton, would you mind if I transfer this into a document and add it (and maybe the rest of your “Did You Know” series) to the folder? I’d be happy to then transfer the ownership of the document to you (but I would need your email address to do that). 🙂
Perfect, your words have been immortalized in the Beanie Resource folder for future beanie use. I went ahead and created a folder for all your “Did You Know” guides, so I’ll try to add those when/if ever you make new ones!
I also transcribed @Hades‘s HTML guides into one document, ’cause hot dang is that a great HTML guide.
Technically, I think it was a formatting error that broke it somehow, not the word count, as I have since been able to post successfully much longer posts (longest was over 10000 words, words, not chars). But it is still good to warn people that it can be finicky when working with long and heavily formatted posts. xox thanks for mentioning me.
@kmromrell it’s worthwhile making note of the way I misinterpreted Sicarius’ advice if you’ve taken this post into your Google Doc! There’s a big difference between 9000 characters and 10,000 words!
It understandable, so it’s ok; there was a time when I recommended not posting over 4000 words just because I didn’t know if what would break it again or how.
But since successfully posting my Squid Game dissertation I’m less worried about word count anyway hehe.
