Learning from my mistakes: let’s talk about drops.

Dropped Kokdu: Season of Deity, or better I just abandoned it after the first few episodes and never went back to it.
Seeing how the criticism got worse and worse with each episode I never considered picking it up again. It still bothers me leaving dramas uncompleted, but time is precious and using it to watch disappointing dramas is a waste.

I’m still working on this, though..for example I still have D.P. on hold, I want to go back to it, because I’m stubborn, and since I liked the 1st season I should complete the 2nd, too, so it’s not a drop yet!! xD

I have so many new dramas piling up that I wanna watch and yet I’m still stuck with Castaway Diva!! Currently in the middle of a rewatch while severely missing the weekly recaps and discussions..the most fun I’ve had with a drama in a long time 🥺

Round-Up 2023 – Day 11
Nam Da Reum prize: best child actor.

Of course for me it’s Moon Woojin and Lee Re as our young Kiho and Mokha! 😍
They did such a good job in the opening episode of CASTAWAY DIVA. Almost too good, to the point that I even saw some disappointment for the fact that they weren’t the main leads for the rest of the show too (that would have been a very different drama, though) 😂

Round-Up 2023 – Day 10
My 2023 crush

– Chae Jonghyeop.
He made my list last year too, then my interest waned a bit while I was caught up in something else (see below) just for it to come back stronger when CASTAWAY DIVA came out! Cutest Bogeol/Kiho, so puppy coded, I couldn’t resist him! 🥺

And I actually did watch LOVE ALL PLAY again! Just as nice as I remembered, especially the bestest boy, Park Taejoon 🥰

– Zhang Xincheng (aka Steven).
I can’t not mention him, he had my whole attention for the majority of this year. I watched and rewatched his dramas, new and old, and couldn’t focus on much else! xD
I just really love him as an actor and always look forward to his next projects! 😊

The character who most screams for mental health care.

Honestly, who doesn’t?! XD

I feel like there was at least one character that did in most dramas I’ve watched!

– Doona in Doona!
– Moon Seoha in See You In My 19th Life
– Moon Dongeun and half of the cast in The Glory

Plus all of them from Castaway Diva..they might have been all happy in the end, but boy, if they didn’t struggle to get there! 🤣😭

Little update about my issues with bad Disney+ subtitles (while watching Love All Play)

I was about 3 episodes from the end when I remembered a conversation I had last year about a similar issue, and the problem turned out to be the difference between the English [cc] version of the subs and the normal one: the former usually coincide with the dubbing lines, hence the many discrepancies. And sure enough it was the same problem in my case!! 😅

…still doesn’t change the fact that they take a lot of liberties with the dub lol!!
There was a scene were the KR line was “you love me” and the sub said “I love you” which is quite different 😭🤣

Anyways, hopefully next time I’ll remember this before complaining..and hopefully at the beginning of the show, so I can enjoy it all without distractions ahahah!
(So I can’t comment on the quality of the subs either..the episodes I watched with the right ones were much better, so there’s that! xD)

      Normal!
      CC is word for word the same as the dubbed version, which is much less faithful to the original Korean, for obvious reasons (translating the spoken lines to make them fit is more complex, after all)

      It seems like I wrote a lot but wasn’t very clear in the end 😅

There was none, actually! I barely managed to convince myself to watch dramas in the first place! XD

I was super close to start Heartbeat, but then I saw the reactions to the finale and canceled that plan too 😅

I’m currently rewatching Love All Play, actually on Disney+ this time around..but the subtitles!?!? Ugh!!! Why do they take so many liberties with the translation!! 🙄

OTP you didn’t think you would adore.

Starting from Mokha and Kiho cute middle school besties, to their adult selves as each other’s best supporters and partners!

I honestly didn’t know what kind of romance we were going to get in the beginning, so I was trying not to focus on that aspect too much, but I ended up being really invested in the end!!
What kind of fools would do what they did for 15 years if they didn’t have feelings for each other, am I right!?? 😁 ..how could I not fall for them! ^^

For me the buildup starting from episode 1 to episode 7 reveal was perfectly executed!
I can’t deny that I wanted more from them in the following episodes, but it\’s ok, I still love them a lot!!

    I literally just listened to “Someday, Somewhere” on repeat all day Friday and let myself be really sad.

    Today, I’m generally alternating between Fly Away, Until the End, Someday Somewhere, and Night and Day (contest version, of course). I can’t wait until they release official versions of the later songs!

– The drama you loved and Beanies hated

I wanted to say Castaway Diva, but it got a lot of love here and elsewhere too; I’d say I strongly disagreed with some of the criticism it received from some Beanies, though.

On another note, I ended up liking Doona! much more compared to how the general reaction seems to have been on this site, so there’s that too.

Some majorly loved dramas I didn’t even check so I have no opinion on them either.

      Good question! I guess it was a lot of the earlier criticism related to the Kiho mystery, Mokha portrayal by PEB…I’d have to go through the recaps again to see exactly what the disagreements were about ahah!

        The reason I’m asking is so that I can defend CD. 🤣
        I too feel the “Who is Ki-ho” mystery did not add any value to the drama as a whole now that we have seen the entire narrative arc. But then, it was a choice by the writer and I respect it.
        I actually loved PEB’s portrayal as Mok-ha. I do get the Attorney Woo comparisons but I liked PEB, her styling as a country girl then as a star, her body language, use of vernacular / accent. I liked it ALL. 😀
        Some criticisms get redundant when we see the entire drama but is a natural and organic reaction to live watching. Maybe I will go and comment on recaps, after all hindsight is 20-20. 🤣🤷‍♀️

          True, it feels redundant at the end, that’s why I didn’t have a detailed answer to give you; a lot of things I felt while live watching I already got over, at this point.
          Also criticism is natural and to be expected, indeed!

Side character that stole the drama.

I honestly cannot think of anyone, this year. There weren’t that many dramas I enjoyed to begin with, but even with the ones I did my attention was all on the main characters anyway! xD

If I have to say something, bio dad in Castaway Diva kinda stole the drama in a negative sense towards the end, because he definitely took up way too much screen time! lol
But shout out to the other dad, the one real father who promptly stepped up when people needed him, he’s the real MVP!!

    I really like how you expressed this – “stole the drama in a negative sense”. So true. Unnecessarily stretching his scenes took away time which could have been well utilized on some fluffy OTP moments.

Round-Up 2023 – Day 2
Male lead I will never forget

Ah..for this one it\’s quite literal, cause I\’ll probably never forget watching and liking a drama just for it to be abruptly taken away from me without notice 😭
I\’m talking about cdrama Justice In The Dark (adaptation of novel Silent Reading) that only aired 8 of 30 episodes and disappeared..will it ever get fully released? Meh, who knows.

But it still gave me a memorable ML in Pei Su played by Zhang Xincheng, who\’s a really talented and versatile actor that has had me totally smitten for the most part of this year! 😆

I also want to mention a second place for Chae Jonghyeop, that, after making me fall for his smile (*cough* and shoulders *cough*) last year, started this one with a somewhat underwhelming project, imo (Unlock My Boss), but promptly climbed back up last minute as the best boy Kang Bogeol/Jung Kiho in Castaway Diva 🥺
..and because I haven\’t had enough, I\’m currently rewatching Love All Play too and loving it just the same!!
(And also realizing how underutilized CJH is in Diva, overall, despite some great scenes being included)

    Zhang Xincheng is a great actor I have met (with pleasure) in Go Ahead, where he was my favorite character. Amazing acting. Now I have to have a look at his other dramas.

      Oh!! Yes, that’s one of his best roles!!
      If your up for a rom-com (with fantasy elements, specifically body swap shenanigans) you should definitely check out The Day Of Becoming You, it’s one of the best in its genre!

      I also love The Heart of Genius, which is a time travel story with a bit of romance too, though its main focus is about family, mostly ~

And speaking of Park Eunbin, I finally watched Extraordinary Attorney Woo and totally fell for Woo Youngwoo too!! She\’s just so precious and funny and smart and adorable! I\’ve read there\’s a plan for S2 and I\’d love to have her on my screen again, though it must not be an easy role for PEB.
