Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: Episode 13

This episode puts everyone’s loyalties to the test as alliances are formed and rivalries are created all in the name of one golden chair. The fate of Goryeo comes to rest on Su’s generally incapable shoulders, leaving her to choose which of the two prominent men in her life she should entrust with information that could end their world as they know it. No pressure or anything.

EPISODE 13 RECAP

So notices the armor beneath Wook’s outer layer, just as Woo-hee rushes the king. Baek-ah takes the blade meant for his father, but the feat goes mostly unnoticed—everyone gets too distracted by the king suddenly collapsing on his own.

Baek-ah kicks the bloody sword away to hide the evidence and tells Woo-hee to run. She does, while third prince Yo tells ninth prince Won to find Wook. He knows their plan has failed.

On his deathbed, King Taejo ruminates over what he’s managed to accomplish in life with only Grand General Park and Astronomer Choi at his side. They assure the king that he made the right decision in choosing Crown Prince Mu to ascend the throne, and in turn, he tells them to watch over both Mu and So.

That night, Su thinks over So’s marriage proposal. The next morning, Yo, Wook, and ninth prince Won approach the king’s quarters with a devious plan in mind. All roads in and out of the palace have been blocked, with Yo intending to receive the king’s final decree (presumably for him to succeed the throne) without the crown prince finding out.

But before they can advance any further, they’re joined by fourteenth prince Jung and surrounded by Grand General Park’s soldiers. General Park knows exactly what Yo’s about, and cautions all four princes to leave—should they not, they’ll be charged with treason.

Even the queens are denied access to the king, with Queen Sinmyeongsunseong slowly realizing that Astronomer Choi must be trying to buy time before Crown Prince Mu arrives. Inside, only Su is allowed to tend to the king in his final moments.

Taejo knows he doesn’t have much time, so he asks Su to bring the crown prince to him. It must be her, he says, because no one else can find out about his death before the crown prince arrives. “Once you leave this room, someone will approach you,” he breathes. “To the person who only asks how I am feeling, tell them that I am asking for more tea. But beware of the one who asks if I have died—that person eyes the throne.”

After warning her not to trust anyone, he adds that the fate of Goryeo rests on her shoulders. “That may be the reason why you are here,” he continues in voiceover, as Su weaves through the soldiers outside the palace to reach her destination.

So attempts to leave the palace grounds, only to be blocked by his half-sister, Princess Yeonhwa. When she tells him that no one’s allowed to leave, he surmises that those are Wook’s orders—he’d wondered why Wook was wearing armor beneath his robes at the ceremony, but now he knows that Wook was planning on attacking the king.

Despite her limp, Su tries to make a run for it. Wook stops her to ask where she’s going, and she lies that she’s going to Damiwon to fetch more tea for the king. Wook then asks her about the marriage proposal from So like he has a right to be jealous, and though she begins to tell him he’s got it all wrong, she soon remembers the task she was originally sent out for.

It’s only then that Wook asks if the king passed away, causing Su to realize the kind of person she’s facing. The king specifically warned her against anyone asking if he had passed. “Do you… wish to become king?” Su asks haltingly.

Yeonhwa asks the same question of So, despite his adamance that the crown prince is set to succeed the king. While Su asks Wook if he will become king, we return to So, who mockingly asks his half-sister if it’s so easy to become king that all one has to do is wish for it. Yeonhwa says it would be for So, since she and her clan could throw all their support behind him.

To Su, Wook claims that the reason he wants the throne is because he needs that power to protect the ones he loves. Quick cut back to So (I’m getting whiplash), who asks Yeonhwa what power being king would grant him. “If I become king, would the heart I so desire become mine?”

Back to Wook, as he says that he will become king. Then back to So, who now says that he will become king.

The queens are finally allowed in the king’s quarters, though he already has one foot in the afterlife. He imagines Court Lady Oh in a verdant field with an armful of flowers, and whispers her name before passing on.

Surprisingly, Queen Sinmyeongsunseong cries as she tries to shake the king back to the land of the living: “You cannot leave me like this! Your Majesty! Come back! Come back!”

“For your sake, I will surely become king,” Wook tells Su. That’s not at all what she wants, but he tells her it’s already begun—he’ll attack the king’s quarters with Yo tomorrow. He takes a protesting Su by the shoulders as he adds that the crown prince won’t be returning anyway. Someone has to take the throne, so all she has to do is hide and wait for him.

He asks again whether the king has passed, and with dead eyes and a flat voice, Su only says that the king asked for more tea. That’s when he tells her that the crown prince is too far to the south for her to get to him on her own, having guessed that that’s the mission she’s on. Su just runs away in response.

Meanwhile, Yeonhwa scoffs that the only reason So wants to become king is to win a girl’s heart. (Because he used one second to convince himself that he could, or something.) So doesn’t care what she thinks, since that’s all the throne means to him.

He orders her to make way for him, but she refuses, guessing that he might try to bring the crown prince back.

Baek-ah seems unharmed for the most part as he meets with an indignant Woo-hee, who blames him for ruining her plan to kill the king. When he asks her why she did it, she claims that it’s because his father killed every member of her family.

He actually apologizes on his father’s behalf, which causes a tear to snake down Woo-hee’s cheek. She fights him when he pulls her into an embrace, but eventually gives in. “I am sorry for being my father’s son,” he adds. Are there really going to be no consequences from that ceremony? Really?

Yo figures that if the king isn’t already dead, he will be soon. Fourteenth prince Jung doesn’t seem aware of his brother’s plans, and blurts that the king is probably feeling better due to the tea Su’s been making him. Since that means that Su knows of the king’s condition, Yo is determined to stop her before she gets to the crown prince.

Su sees that ninth prince Won is looking for her, and is pulled to safety by So. Trusting him, she tells him that the king has passed away, and that he tasked her with finding the crown prince. She also tells him of Wook’s plans to attack tomorrow, earning a rise out of So, since that means that she would’ve had to have talked to Wook in order to find out.

Since all the roads out of the palace are blocked, So tries to think of another way for them to get the word out. When he says that the crown prince is in former Later Baekje territory to the south, the displaced princess from Later Baekje, Woo-hee, instantly comes to Su’s mind.

Speaking of, Baek-ah asks Woo-hee if she’d be willing to forget everything and just be with him, since no one would recognize her from the ceremony. Before she can answer, they’re interrupted when Su arrives with So to ask Woo-hee about her hometown.

Since So trusts Baek-ah, he tells him that the king has passed, which causes Woo-hee to lose her footing. Baek-ah steadies her as So fills him in on what Su told him about their brothers’ plans, asking Baek-ah to be the one to send word to the crown prince. He’ll stay behind to try and stop their brothers—and thankfully, Woo-hee knows a secret road Baek-ah can use to leave the palace.

Princess Yeonhwa tells her brother about her encounter with So, though the more pressing issue is the king’s health. No one knows if he’s alive or dead, since his queens have basically been held hostage inside his quarters so that no word will leak out.

Yeonhwa sees this as an opportunity for Wook to storm the king’s quarters and declare himself king (which would mean altering the king’s final decree), but Wook doesn’t want anyone to be able to call him a traitor. “I wish to be seen as flawless,” he says, much to his sister’s dismay.

She claims to not understand what he wants, since he even went so far as to wear armor to the ceremony the night before. Wook only tells her that he’s weighing his options. Seeing his scheming side makes Yeonhwa happy, as she arrogantly notes that she’s no longer having to force his hand—he genuinely wants the throne now: “You’ve changed, Orabeoni.”

“If the situation will not change, then I must,” Wook says, resigned. But the only thing that worries him now is the thought of having to betray Su, or so he says.

So finds Su staring at the empty throne in the dark, and jokingly asks if she wants to sit in it. Does she not want the seat that everyone’s now fighting for? Su says she doesn’t, not when the king had to kill Court Lady Oh to keep it. And now that So’s having to fight his brothers for it. “Even if you fight tomorrow, you won’t harm them, will you?”

He guesses that she’s worried about Wook, but not for the right reasons—he still thinks that she only considers Wook a relative. But if that were the case, he wonders, why did she come to him? “He said it was for my sake,” Su begins. “He was angry that he couldn’t do anything when I was driven out, so he says he wants more power.”

So nods in understanding, claiming that he once felt the same way. Looking back up toward the throne, Su says that because the king told her to live her life according to reason, she’s siding with the crown prince. But that doesn’t mean she wants to see Wook hurt, since she claims that would scar her for life.

Surprisingly, So is more than willing to go out of his way not to harm Wook, since he doesn’t want to see Wook die either. “I could be injured too,” he adds. “Are you not worried about me?” She isn’t, because she knows he’ll go on to become King Gwangjong, though of course she can’t say as much. All she tells him is that she knows he’ll be fine. So smiles at her, then looks toward the throne.

Queen Sinmyeongsunseong becomes insanely possessive over the king’s body, enough to where she refuses to let Queen Sinjeong anywhere near him. Their tiff is interrupted by So, which makes the evil queen intensely unhappy—she’d rather either of the sons she actually loves to be the first to see the king dead.

So kneels at his father’s bedside as Astronomer Choi relates the king’s last words to him, which were about how fleeting life is. It’s then that So flashes back to two years ago, when Choi had gone to Shinju to give him a new mask, which his father gifted him every year.

While trying it on, So had turned and accidentally caught sight of the king in his palanquin nearby. He’d come with the astronomer to see his son receive his gift, even if it was only from a distance. Seeing how So’s face just lit up at the sight of him is heartbreaking.

In the present, he lays his father’s funeral cloak over him. Only then does he tell Astronomer Choi to gather General Park and his men to prepare for the rebellion Wook and Yo have planned for tomorrow. The king wanted the throne to go to the crown prince, so now it’s their job to make sure that happens.

Queen Sinjeong is shocked to hear about her son’s involvement in such a plot, but of course, the evil queen threatens to kill So if he so much as breathes on Yo. “You expect him to live after committing treason?” he growls, pulling his arm from her grasp. “You have too much greed.”

Queen Sinjeong is the one to think on her feet, since she and Queen Sinmyeongsunseong now have a common goal. If they don’t figure something out fast, both their sons will die.

Woo-hee forces Baek-ah to make camp later that night, since his wound is paining him. Over a warm fire, Baek-ah tells her that he never intended to hide that he was a prince from her. At least she knows she has no room to be upset, since she hid things from him too.

But Baek-ah can’t help but wonder what their lives would have been like if he were only a musician, and if she were only a gisaeng. Woo-hee just tells him to rest by way of answer, since they’ll reach her hometown tomorrow. They both know that they’ll have to part ways then, and neither will have a reason to meet again.

Woo-hee’s much more adamant about this point than he is, so Baek-ah just resigns himself to that fact. “If we can’t see each other again, then… can I do as I like tonight?” he asks, before leaning in to kiss her.

Wook and Yo show up at the palace gates in full battle regalia, and though Yo is somewhat concerned that it’s so quiet, they know that most of the king’s forces are with the crown prince. Regardless of what happens, Wook only has one request of Yo: “If So tries to stop us, make sure to kill him.” Yo readily agrees.

They walk their massive forces through the gates, encountering So and Grand General Park with an army of their own. Wook has the decency to look guilty when he spots Su looking at him from behind the lines, but it’s too late now.

Yo proclaims that he’s come to free his mother, who’s been unjustly held in the king’s quarters without reason. Yo is the first to draw his sword, but Wook and So are the only ones to go at it, acting as their respective armies’ champions.

Wook is strong in his offense, leaving So to parry his blows. But when So takes the initiative to rush him, it sets Wook back more than a few paces—and from there, the blows only become more intense. The two men lock arms and swords in combat until they’re at a standstill, which is only broken when archers on the roof send arrows raining down on Yo’s forces.

More soldiers come rushing through the gate, but So’s got his eyes locked on Wook as he crouches into a battle stance. But the arrival of the soldiers signifies a much bigger arrival—they’ve come with Crown Prince Mu and Baek-ah. Busted!

Yo orders Wook to go into the king’s quarters while he holds their eldest brother off. Instead, Wook spins around and holds his sword to Yo’s neck. Yo calls his brother out for his betrayal, though Wook says that it can’t be considered betrayal when they weren’t even on the same side.

Indeed, Crown Prince Mu claims that it was Wook who told him all about Yo’s treasonous plan, which makes Wook look like the real hero here. So’s face twitches in minor annoyance, but it’s not like he can interject—everyone wins with Yo looking like the big bad.

Only then does Astronomer Choi officially announce that the king has died, and that he decreed before his death that Crown Prince Mu would become king. Wook shocks them all by being the first to raise a victory chant: “Manseh! Manseh! Manseh!”

So joins him in the chant, and soon, everyone in the courtyard does as well. Crown Prince Mu is the only one left standing as everything hits him at once—his father is dead, and now he’s king.

A white-haired woman stumbles out of the king’s quarters to hear the news… and it’s Queen Sinmyeongsunseong? Did she go white overnight?

The princes take turns seeing their dead father, with fourteenth prince Jung being particularly affected by the sight. Princess Yeonhwa only thinks to herself that she’ll make this nation her own.

Meanwhile, Soon-deok does her best to stop tenth prince Eun from attending the funeral, because she knows all too well what happens when a new king ascends the throne. If Eun stays quiet and keeps to himself, she says, then the king will surely leave them alone.

Eun refuses to take the armor she tries to give him, refusing to wear his wife’s armor just to save his own life. Soon-deok gets a little too excited at the thought of them dying together, which Eun quickly refutes. “Why should we die at all?” he wonders. “Let’s both live.” By that, he means live together, which puts his loving wife over the moon.

Su confronts Wook about having lied to her about being on Yo’s side, realizing that he meant to test her. He admits as much, but adds that she still went to So in the end. With wide eyes, she asks if he was planning on killing So, and he levels her with a look as he says that he fully intends on becoming king, so he may as well start getting rid of anyone who’ll stand in his way now.

She can’t believe what she’s just heard—Wook knew how much she suffered from being the cause of Court Lady Oh’s death, so what did he think would happen if he used her to kill So? “You have changed. You are not the person I once knew,” she says, stunned.

Wook throws that right back at her, claiming that she hid things from him, too. “I wanted you to tell me that the king had died. Didn’t you care if I would die or not?” But Su tells him she was on a special mission from the king, and that So had promised not to hurt him.

That gets to Wook most, but with desperation in her eyes, Su reminds him that he’d once told her that they could leave the palace and live in peace. Approaching him halting step by halting step, she tells him that she’s ready to do that now, and firmly believes that the new king will grant their request if Wook only asks. Oh no, Su.

Wook simply says that won’t be possible, which causes Su’s eyes to fill with tears. “You said you would become king for my sake. You’re lying to yourself,” she realizes. She steps away from him as she adds that she’ll keep her distance from him starting now.

Su takes a special kind of offense when Wook asks if this is because of So, asking him if he ever trusted her and her feelings for him even once. Confronted, all Wook can do is claim that he’ll make her return to him. “It won’t be easy,” Su replies.

Yo runs for his life, pursued by Wook, So, and a small army of soldiers. They corner him on that cliff you’ve definitely seen in a sageuk before, and left with no other option, Yo fights and kills many of his pursuers. So stops Wook from shooting him with an arrow, as that would be too humiliating for Yo.

As Yo continues to cut down the men who approach him, So finally comes forward to fight him directly. He’s incredibly quick and agile as he fights Yo with his sword sheathed, though his goal is to talk him off the ledge (literally and figuratively). When Yo proclaims that he won’t give up, So unsheathes his sword and plunges it into his older brother’s chest.

The force of the blow pushes Yo back toward the edge of the cliff. He seems to sense that So won’t kill him, so he knocks the sword away, only for it to be plunged once more into his belly. Even So looks surprised at what he’s just done, and he rushes forward to catch Yo as he goes tumbling over the cliff…

But he’s too late. A crash can be heard far below as So just stares forward in shock. Jung cries for his hyungnim, who’s presumably (and luckily) fallen into the water below, then turns from grief to anger as he stares accusingly up at So.

Jung is the one to inform their mother of the death of her son, but it takes a while for the white-haired queen to believe him. If she didn’t have it out for So before, you can bet she does now.

Su finds So keeping to himself with tears in his eyes, and he tells her that he thought she’d never forgive him if he went to her. “But you might be understanding,” he says with hope, then adds the fateful words, “I… stabbed my older brother.”

He cries, and Su reaches out a tentative hand to pat him comfortingly on the shoulder. Just that touch seems to do him in, and when his crying intensifies, Su just pulls him into an embrace and lets him cry his heart out.

COMMENTS

It’s still difficult to actually swallow the change in Wook, no matter how organic the show tries to make it feel. It’s not that I can’t buy that he’d do these things, only that it seems like such a giant shift for someone who was so upright and principled before. People change, of course, and maybe he was just waiting for an opportunity to let it all hang out—but call me old fashioned, because I miss the Wook of yore.

Now he’s seemingly more cunning than all his other brothers combined, which is already making him a force to be reckoned with. I knew he’d planned to flip the situation with Yo to make himself the hero, but I wasn’t expecting it to be so swift, so I was actually taken by surprise when Wook turned on him. He couldn’t have done it because he thought he would be king, but because he wanted to get rid of the competition and endear himself to the new king. I do wonder if he would’ve actually killed So had he been given the chance, and based off his conversation with Su, it seems he would have.

It certainly makes a difference that Wook now seems to be the more cold-blooded brother out of him and So, since he was ready to shoot Yo down without so much as a second thought. It was So who cared about maintaining Yo’s dignity, no matter how treasonous he’d behaved. And even before, it was So who promised Su that he would (to the best of his ability) try to not harm Wook, since he didn’t want his half-brother dead. Wook wouldn’t make the same promise to Su under any circumstance now. He’s made that much clear.

What worries me now is how So might change once future events start calling for him to do so. Compared to Wook, he’s much too trusting and good-hearted—but now that we’ve seen that side of So, it’d be absolutely devastating for him to turn to the dark side just to get his hands on the throne. I can’t quite get a read on how badly he wants the seat, since he tends to fluctuate between saying that he wants it and definitely will have it, to seemingly forgetting that he ever thought of it. Was he lying when he told Yeonhwa that he wanted to be king so he could win Su’s heart? I’m actually hoping that he was, because the alternative doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. When did he decide that being king was the way to Su’s heart? And when did he intend to act on that?

But this episode was a great showcase for Lee Jun-ki and the range of emotions he can portray with only silence. Whether it was that facial twitch of annoyance when Wook stepped up as the crown prince’s savior, or the look of horror and sadness when he stabbed his own brother, So gives us the most open window to his soul out of all the characters presented. Wook would probably come in second, since we can usually see what he’s feeling even if he makes an active effort to hide it.

Su still continues to be Su, but at least she took some action this hour, and realized that her future wasn’t with Wook. Her last conversation with him was as confusing as it was necessary for her to move on, though I can’t help but wonder if she actually meant what she said about being ready to run away with him. Why now, of all times? Did she actually believe that he was doing all this for her sake, and would she have truly run away with him had he agreed? How many men are going to profess to become king just for her?

I can't believe any of these wannabe king's motivation to become kings outside Yo (since he always wants to be one),
not that I think they are underserved, wait do they have capabilities?
they just suddenly want it and just because of a girl?
the plot "need to give them a scene about their motivation", just because wanting a girl is as weak as high school student in Heirs fighting for someone they just met,
and we knew there is another reason by connecting the dots that usually happen in the historical drama,
"but the dialogue never delivered",
is it happen offscreen and I have to fill the blank myself again??
*sigh

"..just because wanting a girl is as weak as high school student in Heirs fighting for someone they just met"

Maybe this drama can be called, "Heirs: Goryeo Edition" then.

The piss poor reasoning behind wanting the crown, I don't know whether to laugh or cry at that. I think if Heirs was bashed for being pointless with a pointless heroine at the center, same goes for this show. Lee Jun Ki's acting can't take away the fact that this is a shitty show. I had to say it. And I no longer think that So love Su with the same intensity anymore. From, the teasers, all I can say is something has changed with Lee Jun Ki's mannerisms from how he was around Su before to how he is in the upcoming episodes. Either he figured out that he is on board a ship named "Titanic" or Wang So got tired of Hae-Su when she finally said yes like the end scene of the movie the Graduate. I have what I want but do I really want this?? Do I really want this damn girl for real, I mean she is unintelligent, late to act, late to figure it out and is a nuisance to be honest, isn't she??

Heirs was given the dragging of a lifetime for everything you mention but it would have got away with it if either of the leads had actually been up to scratch in selling their characters. As I remember, it was the supporting leads who won the most praise/fan love, since they were played by better actors.

That's not the problem here, since the male lead is Lee Jun-ki. I suspect there would be a lot more complaining if the part of So was filled by a pretty-boy actor who relied on looks or screen presence ahead of acting ability, since the role is a lot more demanding than Heirs could ever be.

This a case of "Potato, Powtaato".......you've essentially agreed that take the actors in lead away, you've got a forgettable show just like Heirs. Now, what does that say about quality in a whole. Lee Jun Ki really needs to pick better scripts. He should've stuck to movies for a while like Hyun Bin is doing. This will add nothing to his resume in the long run.

Not really - the script has a million flaws but the story at its heart is a lot more interesting than Heirs.

I mean, you could predict from Day 1 of that show it was going to be a cheesy happily ever after kind of show where the designated OTP end up together after a few token corporate machinations and angsty music. This? Not even close. I have no idea whether everyone's going to live or die, whether Su herself will be alive at the end and stay in Goryeo for the rest of her life or time travel back to the modern day, or we end up with multiple dead brothers etc.

0

And also, yes, the story is flawed and unevenly paced - what I said was that if it wasn't for Lee Jun-ki, we'd be complaining a lot more than we already do.

Nowhere did I say or imply (and if I did, I certainly didn't mean to, that's on me) that Scarlet Heart is 'pointless, with a pointless heroine' in the same vein as Heirs.

@pogo
I agree with you. The execution may be quiet poor but the story is solid. Despite that it is based on a C-novel and C-drama, nothing is predictable here. And therefore I say, LJK was not wrong with the script selection, it was the execution that failed him. And not to say that he totally lose in term of his resume, if there is anything, he will walk out of this drama having more international fans and a leading man that can sell a drama to larger viewers outside SK.

I'm so having headache this morning! Why the director didn't split the screen into 2, with both Wook and So said 'I will be king?' simultaneously??
Ggrrrr... too much jumping from 1 shot to another.

So many things happened in episode 13, that I barely remember all of them.

My handsome prince son, Baek Ah, has guts made of steel or latex rubber, to rebound from the stab wound, so quickly. He gets on a horse, a day later. So cute when he told Woo Hee, that he wanted to do something that night. I wonder what that might be.

It is amazing that Hae Soo was still protecting Wookie, after he confessed his royal ambition. I would have said to Wang So, "Spear (...not spare) him, if you feel like it".

What a convoluted plot! Crown Prince and everyone think that Wookie was pretending to support Yo. Later, at the cliff, Wookie was banking on Wang So killing Yo, and would fabricate Wang So's conspiracy to take the throne.

What happened to Queen Yo's hair? It was ash brown when it was pinned up nicely. When she appeared on the palace steps, she had that 'Bride with White hair' look. She aged twenty years in a short interval. She had plotted with Yo and the other prince, to overthrow her husband King, but now that he is dead, she is the grieving widow. Is it a sham?

What happened to Queen Yo’s hair?

I assumed the elaborate updo was a wig, to make her look as young as possible.

Yeah, the big pile of hair on top of her wig certainly looked like a separate hairpiece, which I think was the usual practice in Goryeo/Joseon since it's pretty hard to have that much hair growing out of your own head even if it's long.

Yeah, for all her other faults she actually loved him. In a twisted way, but still. I love that we have so many flawed but interesting female characters here, like we can be o_0 at her levels of dysfunction and still stay engaged with her character and the cat-and-mouse power games she plays.

Okay I am being blunt here, I don't care who Hae Soo ends up with. This whole time I am on Team Wang So (LEE JOON-GI), and if being with Hae Soo makes him happy, then I am happy. Wook being on the crown prince side....i think is BS, I don't believe him at all. And also how did Queen Yoo randomly end up with white hair?? Also I loved Wook mother for being so strong, "You are a mother before a women". She literally saved the princes. I also love Baek Ah (i feel like he is the only prince with a sane mind and a heart). Also Wang Eun with his new wife. I ship them the most rn
The new king (crown prince) is like wth, I'm king??
DUDE when Wang So cried at the end, I DIED. He felt so bad.

Will Soo fall back into the water and return to the 21st century and So fall into the future at the solar eclipse and be her 21 century lover who, like the astronomer, has a vague recollection of another life in another time but it is only a memory? I mean, can you imagine So strolling into the make-up shop where Soo works to touch up his scar?

I'm actually wondering where we're going with this show/how it's going to end. I mean, Su's a time-traveller - is she really stuck in Goryeo forever? Because that would suck.

I also think the same with you. I mean it is THE RULE in Asian drama for time travel genre that they will go back to the time period that they originated from and meet again with the person that she/he has fallen in love with. Please be like that. If this drama doesn't have a happy ending, I'll have a huge broken heart

You may get your wish based on the laws of PPL from the Gu Family Book.

If in an ancient time drama, thoust cannot thrust modern products before the eyes of the viewer, thou must compensate by saturating the entire final hour based in the present with fridges, phones, cosmetics, automobiles, orange juice and other sundy desireable items currently available to thine audience.

I was thinking the same.... They usually go back to the "future-actual present"...and there's a doppelganger of the character from the past that meets the hero/heroine/main character...I'd love to see the 4th prince, entering the shop where HaeSoo works, but it would be also nice to see at least a little bit of other characters (princes, Lady Oh...) and having a sneak peek of their lives in the 21st century (even if it's just a glimpse, who's whom, their jobs, pairing...) I know nothing's gonna change, since it's already filmed,but....a girl can dream right?

Oh! yes....a historian specialized on the Goryeo period and especially the final Taejo years and Wang So period would be sooooo "ironic" for the character and yet so nice... Lee Joon KI being a university professor and teaching about this... :)

Ok....now I am probably overthinking the finale....but.... it would be also pretty interesting that the 21st century version of Wang So end up being an actor (as LJK himself), playing the same character he was in Goryeo (the 4th prince) but with Ha Jin working as a make up staff for the fake drama nad meeting him there..... what do you think about it?...too "meta"?! LOL sorry, as I said...probably overthinking it....

This is basically what I want to happen:

- Hae Su dies a beautifully tragic death (we cry bucket loads) and she wakes up as Go Ha Jin in the present after having just been rescued from drowning.

- Wang So has a long and good reign, is hailed as a great king and respected by many. However his loyal brother Baek Ah who remains by his side all this time can tell that he never manages to let go of Hae Su.

- As recorded in history, Wang So builds a lot of Buddhist temples, firstly, to atone for his sins, but also to pray that he will be able to see his beloved Hae Su again in his next life (cause reincarnation is such a huge thing in Buddhism).

- On his death bed, his last words were a faint 'Su -ya', just like his father's, showing his eternal longing for his one true love, and how even at death he will never let her go. Upon his death, the sun is swallowed completely as a solar eclipse occurs, painting the Goryeo sky crimson.

- Flashback to the present, some amount of time has passed, and Ha Jin has pulled her messed up life together, and is now more mature as a result of the experiences she had. She recalls the years she spent as Hae Su, her life in Goryeo with the princes, and wonders whether it was all just a dream, but dismissing it as too real to have possibly been a dream.

- She sees a flyer for an expo on Goryeo and decides to go see it. At the expo, she sees the hairpin that Wang So gave her on display and freezes, as a wave of relief washes over her as the realisation hits her, which was quickly replaced by feelings of sadness and longing. Then she hears a voice, the voice that she knew all too well, coming from behind her, So's voice, as he says "I've missed you", and a single tear flows down her cheek.

- and they live happily ever after! The End.

I know I'm basically taking the ending from the Chinese drama and putting my little spin on it. This will probably not be how it goes down but one can hope ):

The hairpin scene would be reminiscent of You From Another Star with the hairpin in the glass case in the museum. "- and they live happily ever after! The End." Coz life with 21st century So would be just that! *slips into a luscious daydream*

Yeap that's the inspiration. But I really hope it's So that comes to the future from a solar eclipse body swap rather than it being just his reincarnation. I don't want him to have like a half ass memory like Ji Mong either but it's just him after waiting for her for so many years, in modern attire but with saeguk speech. So they'll have another lifetime to love each other ordinarily and blissfully (with proper plumbing and wifi).

But minus the scar, I mean since it's his reincarnation's body we can expect him to not have the scar. Fate/the universe owes him that much considering how they pretty much screwed him over in his past life.

"Then she hears a voice, the voice that she knew all too well, coming from behind her, So’s voice, as he says “I’ve missed you”, and a single tear flows down her cheek."...

Oh man!.... that would be a very typical final scene....but I guess most of us wouldn't mind to watch it :)

Also.....can the dramagods rewind a little bit more and show So-Su babies?? in the 21st century of course...

I think that would be the most appropriate ending. Somewhat open ended but just enough closure for the viewers too! It's enough to interpret that it's So who has solar-eclipse-body-swapped to the future and it's not just his reincarnation or something, but not too much as to question the whole mechanism of this time travelling thing.

Also in this non-cannon ending that I fabricated, I imagine he'd give her a back hug too. In general paralleling the scene when he returned from later Jin when she was hanging laundry - rounding it up as no matter what happens he'll always find his way back to her. <3

Although I totally don't mind like 5 minutes of clomplete fan service where they show us glimpses of their simple but blissful life together in the future.

In Faith, Choi Young and Eun Soo met in a completely different time, not her 21st century and not his Goryeo time. In some ways, that was a "somewhat open ended but just enough closure for the viewers" way for them to meet again. The more I think about it, I'm guessing So will meet Soo in her 21st century setting and he will remind her of her time travel but he will just be who he is now. Handsome as ever.

0

I don't think soo is going to go back to the future, she's not a time traveler she was just reincarnated, she died in the future so she found herself reincarnated in the past, she probably can't go back maybe they already had a funeral for her or something but i don't know maybe im wrong that's just howa i think it should logically be but you know kdramas you never know what might happen

Seriously this dramaaa!!!
I don't think I've ever been so invested in a Korean drama like this before. The last one that I've watched in its entirety was Nine and I haven't even finished Signal but Moon Lovers had me going total stan mode. Now I know what a crack drama is lol
My biggest complain about this show is how they screw up Hae Soo's character so badly, she's supposed to be MAIN main lead, even the rest of the cast (including Lee Jun-ki) said so.
Second complain is show should have been focusing on the battle of the thrones from the start rather than draggy romance that was going absolutely nowhere between Soo and Wook. Even now with So and Soo ship sailing, I'm scared that I will end up being sf disappointed at the end. We already know from the beginning that their romance is going to be really sad but I have no faith in this writer to make a good sad love story.
Last but not least, I feel like LJK's talent is being criminally wasted here. He would've killed Wook's role imo, being sweet prince turned cold and scheming. He should try evil villain roles after this. Although don't think he would want to.

Also, while I've definitely been annoyed at the lack of Lee Jun-ki in earlier episodes (it was particularly bad when they were spending time with that idiot with the puppets), I think this performance is one of his best ever.

I remember mentioning after the end of SWWTN last year that I'd love to see Lee Jun-ki in a villainous/negative role because of the potential to show off even more range, and we've got the closest thing he's ever done to one, right here.

ML is totally cracktastic!

Reminds me a lot of Faith with Lee Min Ho, super flawed but super addicting as well. I only wish ML will have similar ending as Faith's :)

I can't help but compare ML to Moonlight Drawn By Clouds, which I am currently watching and loving, but MDBC doesn't make me obsessive like ML.

I think it's LEE JUN KI. He's has a major problem in every drama though, he's too beautiful. So beautiful that he overshadows his female costar's beauty. Seriously. And his acting overshadows everyone else's acting ability too.

Not to knock IU, but seriously, casting should have gone to a more seasoned actress. There are so many beautiful and talented S. Korean actresses. I wish the lead actress could parlay with LJK's acting, micro-expression for micro-expression.

This would have been killer and more heart wrenching because we all know the ending of this drama already.

Historical dramas rarely end well, meaning the OTP rarely get each other in the end. :(

Why are you comparing Moon Lovers to Moonlight because if any sort of comparisons that should be made against it is the Chinese version which was better written and acted. The original Scarlet Heart had better characterization of the female lead and the Princes. The story also wasn't a discombobulated mess.

Was he lying when he told Yeonhwa that he wanted to be king so he could win Su’s heart?

I read that scene as him making a point - he only has one thing he really desires, and since being king won't help him obtain it, what use could he have for it?

I think it's interesting that Yeon Hwa projects her own desires onto everyone around her, assuming that everyone else's goal is the same as hers.

I was wondering if anyone thought the same way I did about So "wanting to be king." That's exactly how I interpreted the scene. He was speaking purely hypothetically and a bit sarcastically to Yeon Hwa. He doesn't actually think being king would win him Soo and he does not want to be king (well, not yet anyhow).

Thanks for the recap, Heads!

This was a bit better than the last ep, but the whiplash between the Wook and So scenes early on was a bit much.

*sigh* And they're back to cutting Jung scenes again for SBS version. =( Not really gonna make much sense if Jung is supposed to like Su as much as So and Wook does/did. Plus a couple of interesting lines (imo) by So were taken out.

I think it was obvious that Wook is ambitious from quite a while back. He's always been the quiet type, hovering in the background but doesn't mean he's not planning anything. I've always felt he was just waiting for the right opportunity. So, I'm glad he opened Su's eyes to the real him...from asking the questions that the king had warned Su about, to turning on Yo in a heartbeat, to secretly plotting to kill So through using her, and to his self-denial to how much he wants the throne and its power. So happy we can move on to So-Su now.

Last scene was so touching... I think Su realized So doesn't mean to harm or kill his brothers... They also want the throne and want him dead. He can't do nothing and just wait to be killed. Also, he's still thoughtful of them and does care about them, so when he broke down, it broke my heart. So glad that Su could comfort him and tell him that it's all right... He didn't mean it... She understands.

Overall, I love So and Su's complete trust in each other. There was no hesitation to tell the truth in front of each other. But Wook is always holding back and doubting. Since he can't fully trust Su and tests her, Su realized soon enough that she can't trust him either. And with the king dying, she finally sees the true heart of these two brothers--who wants power and who has her best interest in mind. I hope she will just take the present as is and not worry about the future so much.

Love love love LJG's emotional expressions!! The subtle ones and the bewilderment and tears at the end of the ep.

Great episode. So has chosen the 4th prince. He needs her more. There's one thing Su does almost all the time with great consistency, she ministers to the needy. She literally is a burden to Wook. She's been right about that. Wook had shaky character from the beginning remember? A lot of people hated how he treated his wife. So it's no surprise to me he'd go over to the "dark side" and take his fate into his own hands. He's really the Prom King in this story so it's no wonder he'd be clever at playing the game for the throne. Once he got in the game he got in to win. I think he and So are both interesting characters. I can't say enough about the two actors playing them. They've made this drama great to watch.

The swords clashing scene was definitely my favourite. That was the most intense moment during the entire hour.

And call me superficial, but gosh, Lee Jun Ki, looking so elfin yet gorgeous and his dagger-like gaze while doing the swordplay and even his groan, I was literally hyper-ventilating watching that sight of him. How is that possible he make the intense fighting scene looking all so sexy?????

Truth to be told, I like the plot moving up a notch despite admittedly being jumpy because at least, we are going somewhere. I also prefer the sneaky cunning Wook. At least he serves a purpose rather than just lingering there being Haesoo's object of affection but still not looking near as hawt as Wang So.

While I do like Wang So for his integrity but I hope they can highlight more of his "king qualities". I like that he is earnest but that does not mean he needs to be so trusting. I really wish to see him stepping up his game and not letting the romance becoming his center of universe. Not that Wang So is not sexy (thanks to LJK's overflowing hotness) but a man with power and ambition is much more sexier and I hope to see more of that in coming episodes.

Could it be that Wang So was just feigning ignorance about Wook-Su?

I believe So is a smart guy, back at the beach I don't also buy that he seriously thought Su was refering to Baek Ah as the prson she loves. I think So just doesn't want to acknowledge Wook-Su relationship as a defense mechanism, he downplays it so that it wouldn't hurt that much, but deep inside he knows. He even gave him a chance to be the one to save Su, because he probably knows that would make Su happy. When he is serious specially when talking with Wook about Su, it sounded like he knows of their relationship.

In front of Su he doesn't show that he knows maybe to save Su from embarassment.

He is possessive only in words but not in action. He seems like the type who would let Su be where he thinks she will be happy.

...or I am just seeing So in rose colored lenses, haha!

I think So is just a little bit naive in terms of relationships no? I mean, the first person ever that was nice to him was Su, so I don't think he had that many friends or knows much about relationships between people. He is smart of course, just a little socially innocent maybe?

My take on it is that So knows about the Soo/Wook ship. That's why he told Wook about his mother when So was captured and about to be tortured. He even told him, no one cares about Soo the way you do. It speaks volumes about So's character that he was able to put his jealousy aside, hand Wook the winning card (who is responsible), and give him the chance to be the hero to come in and save Soo. So was able to put aside his own personal needs to save Soo. Instead Wook killed the only evidence that would have been proof of Soo's innocence.

This show wants to give me a heart attack, I swear. One minute everything's all over the place, the next minute I'm riveted again. It's like it's taking a leaf out of what Wook's book and wants to tests its viewers' loyalty.

So glad to see Hae Soo step it up this episode and be part of actively making things happen. The scales have totally fallen off her eyes as far as Wook is concerned. Her best line was when she said that he was just fooling himself by claiming his actions were for her. I mean, FINALLY!

As for Wook, I get lost sometimes trying to make out what exactly this guy wants and what he's after. It doesn't seem to be Hae Soo, but if it's the throne, when and how did this surface? Yeon Hwa on the other hand has been far more consistent in her motives and ambitions. But it looks like even she didn't expect Wook's ambitions to run so deep. It doesnt seem like she was in on his double cross.

It has been reeaaallllyyyy slow, but the tides are turning for the So-Su ship. Loved, loved how she immediately went to look for So after that showdown with Wook; another indication that he's the person she instinctively turns to in times of danger. The honesty in their conversation at the throne room was great too. I think Wang So knows by now that Wook is the man Hae Soo loves, but the great guy that he is, isn't fixated by it at all. Instead, he semi-jokingly asks, "what about me? Aren't you concerned I might get killed too?" Poor guy. He's got to work for every crumb from Hae Soo.

Teared up at the scenes of Queen SoSheHasAHeart bidding farewell to the dead king. Great acting. There's a rich back story in there of a beautiful but ambitious woman who got all the riches and power a woman could have in those times, but never the heart of the man she loved.

Thanks for the recaps, heads!

(Sigh of relief that we ended the week on a more positive note)

Yes, the parallels are very sad here. Yeon Hwa becomes future evil Queen SMSS, Hae Soo becomes (as someone else put it) Court Lady Oh 2.0, and that makes So...Taejo, feared, but with his hands bound by politics? Allowing bad things to happen to his loved one because of power dynamics? Marrying and marrying again? Surrounded by the (totally understandable) plotting of his wives, concubines, and offspring?

Please, show, don't let it be so. :(

This episode was a mix of good and bad.

The bad? There was more backstory that we had to assume (Um...how did Yo escape & come to be running through the forest w/a sword? Details, please, writers! To quote 'Coupling': There's only so much you can cover with '...in the course of events')

The good? That scene at the end between So and Soo. I am a complete sucker for good men who suffer from the bad things they must do, and to see the emotional consequences of this for WS was perfect.

I also loved the scene with the Queens, both grieving and apprehensive in their own ways (Queen Yoo devolving into hysterics, of course, and Queen Sinjeong quietly sad but also maybe a little hopeful, and - in addition - totally out of patience for Yoo's shenanigans.)

The fact that when WS remembers his father, it's at a distance & the king doesn't even formally show his face...wow. He's really had to raise himself, hasn't he?

And I loved that finally, FINALLY, Hae Soo gets hit enough times with the clue bat to figure out that Wook is kind of an asshole. When he was trying to snow her with the 'I did it for you' claim, I really wanted her to respond with "That is a terrible lie." So happy to see her call him out on his self-deception (though I was sad by how restrained she was; I'd like to have seen her actually let that tongue loose again.)

I did laugh hysterically when Yeon Hwa was complaining about him not doing anything & he said he was "prioritizing" :snort: As usual, he is doing the least amount of work possible & waiting for everybody else to do the heavy lifting.

Finally, in the WTF? category are the previews from next week, wherein we learn that nobody bothered to find the body of a royal traitor. What. the. hell? :side-eyes the writers:

This far, I can still say that I like the drama as a whole, story and all. I have already stopped assessing it on a per episode basis. I have already accepted that it would have episodes which are slow, some great ones, some fillers. Maybe it would be better to look at Mondays as set up episodes for Tuesday's main event if we'll look at it on a weekly basis.

I bet when this drama finishes binge watching it would be very entertaining, assuming it ends beautifully.

Thanks for the recap Heads, and for the insights beanies! :-)

Required fields are marked *

Yup.

I've been trying to pin down why exactly I'm addicted to this show despite its flaws, and the reason is the story. There's a rich, compelling and universal story being told here of not only romantic, star-crossed love across the ages, but also filial love, familial strife, struggle for survival and power in unforgiving times, and the rise of the unlikely hero paralleling the antagonist's descent into villainy.

Such themes have played out in various canvases ranging from classical literature to modern pop culture.

Ironically, for such a derivative show - being based on history and not just one literary source, but as an adaptation of a popular drama - none of us knows how it will end exactly. Will Hae Soo live out her days in Goryeo? Will Wang So keep her by his side or cast her out? Will they meet in 21st century Korea? Or will it all end in tragedy with the OTP never fated to be together?

The unpredictability of it, unlike the typical rom com where you KNOW the OTP will eventually get together, is just so tantalizing.

And while the epic nature of the story has been let down at times by poor directing, editing, weird transitions and sub-par acting, luckily, we've got competent actors in the main roles. LJK, of course, is simply amazing.

While I'll be the first to vent at the production's shortcomings, I think, from an overall perspective, there's a solid story being told here and I'm anticipating the ride.

I have to say, all the logic jumping these last two episodes is decreasing my interest in what's been a crack drama for me. Yes, there were editing problems before, but they kicked it up a notch for 12 and 13, but worse, I felt that it wasn't just editing this time, but the writing perhaps because they've just been such messes. I like the love story though it's a bit slow, but the scene selection for the history, the pacing, the jumping, people suddenly appearing with gray hair, or escaping out of nowhere, sauntering instead of speeding to get the crown prince, and that's just his one, last episode was worse.

For some time I've been able to ignore it and just get caught up in the emotions of the drama, and they've been great, but if this kind of thing keeps up, even I won't be able to suspend my disbelief. It's been getting almost surreal.

0

Let's get real here. The editing issues did not begin until around the 3 or 4th episode when SBS realized that Koreans weren't watching. Koreans weren't watching because they were watching Park Bo gum and had decided NOT to watch IU.

0

@TJ ??? I remember clearly the episodes 1-3 that shown on tv by SBS were so badly edited that SBS made new edited versions of those episodes on their website after Korean viewers complained, and then kept making re edited version after that of ep 4 onwards.

Editing, directing and OST problems were there from day 1, look at even comments here, people were talking about where to watch the re edited versions of episodes 1 to 3 in the first week because the original episode shown on tv was so criticised.

0

Yeah this drama has improved so much since the beginning. I kind of get why they had low ratings in the beginning? I mean it was super slow and it wasn't going anywhere, not saying it wasn't interesting but I think Korean ahjummas aren't interested in that, they rather watch something light and cute like Moonlight.

The OSTs and background music has been awesome so far, love it!!

Before airing of MLSHR, it was around 420K and by episode 13, he has amassed 1 million followers, which means, he gets an increase of 45K followers per episode. He is definitely more popular now outside Korea and I think he is aware of it, judging that he constantly captioned his IG in English to connect better with his international fans. If you check ONE TV Asia social media page, people are crazy about him. Normally ONE TV Asia would bring the actor of their popular drama series to SEA and this week, Kim Rae Won would be coming down to Malaysia. Now a lot are requesting ONE TV to bring LJK as Scarlet Heart is the most popular show in Malaysia and Singapore at the moment.

To me, the success of a drama not necessarily be defined by the ratings. If it succeed in touching your heart, leaving a lasting prints to your soul and deliver the story as a whole, I still consider it a successs. That is how I feel about Moon Lovers. Moon Lovers is so much like Wang So himself - the bad boy whom everyone perceived to be so wrong to love but the feeling is oh so right. And LJK is the bomb.

I'm so jealous that you guys actually have a chance to see Lee Jun-ki.

0

@pogo

We haven't had the chance yet but the possibility is there because I have been noticing a trend from ONE TV Asia. They will always bring in the actors to come over should the drama doing very well. Kang Ha Neul came over to Singapore to promote Moon Lovers on 27 August, Kim Rae Won coming down to Malaysia on 10 October and so as Park Shin Hye, she will be in Malaysia on 14 October. Previously, they brought in Lee Min Ho when The Heirs was a big hit in SEA.

But if he is coming down to Malaysia, I won't mind to fly all the way to KL to see him.

I’d like to highlight the “whiplash scene” lol

Q: Do you want to become king?
Wook: In order to protect those I love inside this palace, I realized that I need to become the most powerful. For your sake, I will become king.
So: If I become the king, will the heart I so desire become mine? If so, I will become king.

Here we see that Wook’s reasons to become king are obviously more complicated than So’s. Wook’s bigger part of underlying reasons stemmed from the grudge of his family humiliation and ambition to lift up his family status. Soo was only part of his reason and her part was inferior compared to the bigger one. Meanwhile So’s reason was 100% Soo. He made it very clear that throne with Soo or no throne at all. I doubt that he really believed getting the throne would grant him Soo’s heart though. He simply made it clear to Yeonhwa that despite of her effort to persuade him, he wasn’t on the same table with her.

Well, I never buy that Wook did it all for the sake of Soo. The fact that he asked him about the king’s death again after he told her he did all for her makes me think he was just trying to win Soo’s heart so she would be honest to him about the king’s condition. And apparently he failed.

I need to know if Chahyeon is the same with Hubaekje? Because if not, then Wook told Soo the false information about CP’s location. The intention was either to drive her far away from the palace so she would be safe from the throne battle, or to hinder her trying to reach CP because it was too far away, or to prevent her giving the correct information to whoever it is. But since he already sent the letter to CP, why should he be afraid if Soo or anyone would reach the CP? Why should he give her that information at the first place?

Please someone highlight me…

Oh wait he was testing her, to see if she would obey him or tell so abt it. His thinking was, if she told so, so would hurry and go find CP (even tho CP had already been on his way back to palace), but that way, when they strike the next day, so wont be in place and they could win the throne.. Once yo becomes king, they can just kill off CP. then wook would kill yo, to make it look like he's the hero.

If soo listens to him and doesnt tell so, nobody at the palace would be prepared to play defense against the strike.. And the same events would turn out.

But what happened was so ordered baekah to find CP. therefore so was still able to defend and buy time till CP arrived.

Thus wook had to change his plans and betray yo earlier than expected~

Am.. i making a story of my own lol~

YAY!! LJK's IG reaching 1M!!

He totally deserves it! I'm really so happy for him! I don't think I've seen a Korean actor work so hard, so diligently at his craft.

It's a pity that Hallyu stars take a hit with their military service, and I feel with his projects always seem to suffer in missing rating predictions. But, I'm so happy his hard work is being recognized.

I'm so happy for him!! He had around 400k followers before MLSHR started airing, and he more than doubled that!

Being born asian and growing up in a household that consumes a lot of asian media, I knew who LJG is since I was 14 when I watched Iljimae with my parents, but since his enlistment he has pretty much fell off the radar. That coupled with his preference to do saeguks rather than contemporary dramas has made it so that most new Hallyu fans don't know who he is, which is ironic cause he was basically the face of the flower boy image/concept that has shot so many of their faves to stardom. So glad that so many newer and younger fans now know this legend ❤️

I think show did a fantastic job in ending Wook-Su. The rain scene was just not a good close, especially for Su. This time, we can say it is a clean break. Both are on the same page as regards not being together, Su does not want to be near Wook anymore, and Wook does not think leaving the palace with Su is a good idea. The demise of their relationship came down to trust. When push comes to shove, they weren't willing to trust each other. In contrast, Su trusts So so effortlessly, like it is reflex for her. And it is the same for So, which was especially shown in that last scene where he said, "I didn't want to come to you because I didn't think you would forgive me, but I know you would understand." That was really nice.

Wook had a chance to finally be with Su, but he let the opportunity pass. My heart was breaking for Su because it seems that she is so tired getting caught up with all the fighting and the palace and just wanted to get away. Now, Su will forever be Wook's "one-that-got-away", because this time, it was completely on his own volition why she got away.

Wook has let his chance to be with Su pass how many times now? He had an explicit request from his dead wife to marry Su, but he failed to act on that, failed to act when she was forced to marry Taejo (he didn't initiate the plan to get her away), failed to act when Su was at the Damiwon and his own sister spoke up to ask the king to let him remarry, turned his back on her when she was all but pleading for a little support, and every time she's dropped lower in status down the totem pole, he's only been able to offer up the reasons why he can't act.

I'm glad the final break is here, and that it's now. I get Wook's reasons - his family is in a vulnerable position, and sticking his neck out for Su risks them all - but he doesn't even do the bare minimum for the woman he loves. He cares for her but clearly not enough to do anything about it.

I have no words for Wook, you know I didn't mind 8th prince from the original series that much but Wook here is such a disappointment. He's all words but with no action, whereas So shows Soo through action that he loves and supports her. Wook makes empty promises but he never does anything because he's a coward. He loves himself and power more than he loves Soo that's why he lost Soo at the end (just exactly like the original)

0

And this time, he didn't really have to think much about protecting his family and whatnot if he really wanted to because of the new king, but he still chose to look the other way, maybe he is paranoid, and an over-thinker and a worrier, assuming things will go bad for them again, maybe he is wired that way, and I can understand that, but not having the courage, for once, to choose Su, and deal with the consequences later, whether good or bad, is completely on him, no other excuses, just that he didn't choose Su, again.

But I honestly am fascinated with Wook, out of everyone in this show, I relate with him the most.

0

I get so sad whenever Su walks. Is she going to be in that condition for the rest of her life? The princes ruined her; I blame Wook :'(

Historically, Yo is meant to be the third King...did he really die??? Probable not, so Su should know, why doesn't she. If you're from the future be of some use.

When So is less of a monster than all the rest...the irony

yeah, I was worried last ep when she was still limping a year later. I know she was tortured so it's amazing she can still walk at all (and on top of that Taejo sent her to be a water maid? Cold).

It's just hard to see the playful girl who hopped in Wook's footsteps in the snow so broken now.

I know, the limp is really bothering me. I feel like we're seeing all her bad experiences reflected on her body. The whipping from Yeon Hwa, the self-inflicted stab and scar on her wrist, the torture, the washerwoman hands, the bad leg. She looks so fragile. It makes you worry she won't be able to survive to the end physically let alone mentally and emotionally.

Yes, she looks very fragile and worn out. No smiles, no happiness on her face. The limp and her fragility is to provide reason for her declining health later, that is if this story goes the C-version route. I really hope it does not!

Cry a bucket. This girl has gone through so much that she looks like a different person now. The Hae Soo who was cheerful and sassy , is now looking so lost!
To think again, Wook said he liked her because sheis different and always try to not burden him. But Now that she is broken, he throws her like a rubbish! So cruel. To think that he is largely responsible for her change.
I am afraid that MLSHR will go through the same story like BBJX. The torture both physically and mentally will make HS 's health deteriorating. Aggghhhh... bracing myself for the sad ending.

Because Yo wasn't a famous king like Gwangjong, a regular person who studied history in Korea in school would know who Gwangjong is, but not necessarily the 3rd king (Yo).

I don't think she's gonna have that limp forever, saw a BTS future scene and she was walking fine.

Also lets not forget that 13th prince's son, King Hyeonjong is the son he had with one of Wook's daughter. So really the Hwangbos were the true winners of this game of thrones, from Yeon Hwa as queen, to her son as king with Wook's daughter as his queen, to Wook's son being king, and then his daughter's son being the next king.

Malcolm Gladwell has a podcast called 'Revisionist History'. I find this amusing as he re-look into the past with a different perspective. HISTORY (or as my high school teacher always call it 'His Story') is often written by the victors of their time, and there were always different sides and perspective of history.

Perhaps in Hae Soo's world, Gwangjong is labelled to be ruthless, who killed and murdered his brothers when he was in reign. That's why she feels reserved to accept So, afraid that he will kill his siblings to achieve his dreams. And she cannot love a person like that. The writer of this show however, shows other possibility of how he gained that reputation in the first place. He has no intention to kill Yo, but it 'seems' like he did just that.

He kept his promise not to harm Wook, but Wook, who has been portrayed as a gentlemen, a calculated one there is, on the other hand has intention to kill him and Yo if given chance. That's why history are something that need to be study, and understand thoroughly.

Soo finally opens her heart when she understand that people may not seem to be who they are, and characters and ambition change in the span of a life time. Therefore, it was important for King Taejo to ask Soo to just be a witness of the history in making. Rather than worried about what is going to happen in the future. I think that helps Soo to finally calm down and let history/present go their own paths.

In the last 2 episodes, Wook certainly let his ambition on the throne changed him. But again, he is always a reactive person. His changes is merely a result of the changes in his life. His character finally shows how cunning he can be. That's his true nature per se.

So on the other hand, is a proactive and we are still not sure if he wants the throne or not tbh. Perhaps his fight for the throne is an act of piety towards late King Taejo, just to continue his father's ambition for the nation or something along that line. Hence, to paint a picture of Yo as an evil king is important in this history in order to justified So's fight for the throne. Who is Wang So a.k.a Gwangjong exactly? This is the answer i want to know from the writer's perspective.

The editing of this series are really cringe worthy. But I have long chosen to look pass it and focus on the idea of the story instead and let the writer has his/her creative licence on history go rampage.

Oh yes finally! So thankful for this episode, now that Wook-Su ship was wrecked we can now see the long overdue So-Su ship freely sailing.

Indeed Wook is one smart guy. He has different tricks on his sleeve and 3rd prince Yo has just tasted the bittersweet aliance with Wook.
Who would've thought that he would shift from Yo to Crown Prince Mu's side given the turnaround of events. He has placed himself securely on either taking the throne with Yo or staying flawless in the eyes of the next King.
Thankfully, Su and our prince So saw his true colors and his real ambition on taking the throne. He may have fooled some, but he cannot fool Su now. No matter how he tried to cover his true intention of becoming king, that he's doing it to protect his loved ones including Su, it was clearly his inner thirst and hunger for power that drives him and motivates him to aspire for the throne.
When Su asked him if they can leave the palace now and keep one of his promise to go in peace with Su, saying its impossible now has waken Su from her daydream of actually having a chance of her and Wook. More convinced now that this guy will do anything be it harming So or anyone that will stand in his way.
Evil indeed runs in your blood, and perfect for a sibling with YH.

I love that Su fully trust So without a doubt. When he approcahes him and gave the information about the king, that mirrors how she trust the 4th prince eventhough she knows that he is King Gwangjong in the future.
She is not scared nor afraid anymore of So, she has seen his true personality and that he's one good man. Assuring her that he will do his best not to harm Wook, made her realized that he is not the evil king she knew from the history.

So may have harmed his brother Yo, but it is with a purpose and that was just rightful to do. But then he still grieve and find himself guilty, Su now perfectly understands his heart.
All she can do now is comfort this crying man on her shoulders. I know she cannot blame So for what happened.

Guessing that Su's time travelling purpose could also be that she may be able to see and proved herself that King Gwangjong was not the evil King she knew from history.

Glad that Baek-Ah is doing fine. As for Woo hee and Baek Ah, I couldnt find much connection with their romance. I just cant feel it sorry. But then at least both of them were safe, that’s enough for me then.

I was also wondering how Queen SMS got that gray/white hair overnight. Though im shocked, cant help but laugh at her the moment she popped up at palace grounds.
Seriously, I thought I am watching a horror movie when she appeared. She looks like an old scary lady from a horror house. Has she just dyed her hair black all this time? And now that the King died, and she was held hostage at the palace, gives her no time to dye it black then.. haha. Anyway, she's doomed and i'm happy.

I certainly think Prince Yo is still alive and will come back after awhile. Felt creepy...

Usually, I don't cheer for the villains. But in this drama, I'm cheering for them all from Evil Empress of Wicked West, to Yo in his eyeliner and blingy gold earrings glory to cunning evil 'no more Mr. Nice Guy' Wook to Future Queen Supreme Yeon-hwa. Except Won. Seriously, on paper, he would be interesting, but because he pretty much blends into the background, sometimes I forgot he's there.

Because the good ones don't cut it for me. It's the villains that shines in this drama, not the hero. I'm sorry, So, even though Lee Junki's killing it in this role, your character's too reactionary in these last few episodes.

Oh! Who could forget the gorgeous costumes and scenery! I'm still watching because of those two as well.

I actually prefer the instrumentals to any of the vocal tracks, if only the music editor/director for this show actually worked with the good stuff they already had we'd have a show with a much better atmosphere.

First off, the sword fighting sequence with Su/Wook and Su/Yo was awesome!! So much intensity. All the three actors did really well with the fight sequence.

I seriously wonder what special diet the Prince' are having in the palace that makes them resilient to gut stabbing. :D Baek Ah looks fine and from the preview of next episode Yo come back more evil and rocking a new hairstyle and serious eyeliner.

Speaking of Baek Ah,i hope this is the end of the romance plot with Woo-Hee. Seohyun is a pretty stiff actress and the scene of them together was so awkward to watch. I was getting impatient and wanted to scream-can we just move on already.

Su finally see Wook for what he truely is. I think her asking him to leave the palce and go together was less of a romantic proposal and more of a final desperate attempt to see if the man she once knew was still there in him somewhere.
Wook is getting more evil but im enjoying this side of him more. He is much more intresting when he is not living like a doormat.

I'm just wondering how the King knew that someone would approach Hae Soo and ask if he was dead, and you must answer them that you are getting tea. This is why you came to Goryeo now go an save the Kingdom....all these super specific instruction from the King made me think that the time traveler isn't only the Astrologer, but could the King be a time traveller too? The Astrologer couldn't have told him all the details of what happened in the last minutes of the Kings life...would such a detailed record even exsist in the future....it's really fishy....and how did the King sense that Hae Soo could foretell the future? ..........and afterwards So never questions Hae Soo too much about how she has all this information : The King just died, tomorrow there will be a rebellion, etc... or why a laundry maid gets to spend the last minutes of the Kings life with him,or when did Hae Soo make a friend who could now reach the Crown Prince....and the 4th Prince's comment of now that you tell me I won't die tomorrow , I am starting to feel immortal....holy cow does 4th Prince suspect Hae Soo can predict the future as well.....

Ha! I know, right. Suddenly the King seems like a time traveller too. Or at least semi self-aware about past lives. Loved his last words. "Time is too short and fleeting. And fleeting again." Huh? Fleeting AGAIN? I dunno. It's beyond me where the writer is going - I guess "went" is the better word - with the king's sudden makeover into fond father, devoted lover, seer, adopted dad to Su. And Su herself suddenly tending him like a daughter after he ordered her tortured for something she never did and killed the woman she regarded as a mother figure. Why is there no acknowledgement at least by the characters that this is all too weird.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I don't think the King is a time traveler, if he were, he would have seen Yo coming at him and the CP.

Honestly, the King himself didn't take his own advice when he told Su to not get involved with the palace politics and just keep her eyes and ears closed and let events unfold naturally. Whelp, that went out the window when he was dying on his deathbed. I guess he got desperate.

Now he's being contradictory, telling Su that the fate of Goryeo rests on her small shoulders.

Hmmm...I think she should have figured that out sooner, like her presence and actions dictate how history unfolds so she plays a large part in getting So on the throne.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Wook definitely told Su to go somewhere besides Hubaekje (where the Crown Prince really was) and I saw that as a way of protecting her so she would be far away when the swords started clashing.

But then his test to see who Su would confide in also proved to be a double whammy once Wook saw So AND Su still at the palace. Seeing So confirmed that Su confided in him, and also seeing Su still in the palace alarmed Wook because she could be in danger during this rebellion. Right?

Even before they marched up the steps, Wook asked Yo that if So WOULD show up then they would kill him. This kind of insinuates that if So did NOT show up then that proves that Su did not tell him about this rebellion - therefore proving that she had no feelings or trust in him (compared to Wook himself). Therefore, if So did not show up then there would be no need to kill him since Su did not have feelings for him. When Wook tells Su that if he was planning to kill So that it was just an eventuality, I don't really think he meant because he needs to get rid of his brothers but more because of the fact that he needs to get rid of his competition for Su's heart.

So it must be a huge blow to Wook to see that Su trusted someone else before him. I'm still wrapping my head around Wook's change, but I'm kind of agreeing with it. His reasonings and constant struggle with trying to help Su the "right" way (with the rain thing, asking for the King's favor to marry, keeping an eye on Su, etc.) have not worked out. Every time they are close to being together, something happens and stops it. She tells him that she can wait for him, so he waits for her. Lady Hae had told him to marry her and he acts with her wishes in mind - yet keeps getting stopped. Wook is being pushed to the extreme in what he thinks he HAS to do to save Su. Of course this does not appeal to her who has become... a little too... I don't know... dependent on EVERYONE AROUND HER?

#teamwook

Also that long close-up of Jung seemed a little foreboding... in the kind of revenge way. Seeing how he is one of the best fighters in the capital... should be interesting.

That's an interesting and more in line with the character analysis..

As far as the drama is concerned, I am still not sold on the theory that Wook has this beastly desire of owning the throne because he has lusted power all his life... but do see him arriving at that decision (both pre HS and post HS era) based on some very logical demands made by life..

Good question.

Wow at this point why is Wook doubting Su's trust in So. I mean didn't he see the whole rain sequence?? Oh wait his back was turned.

I would like to say to Wook that "Gorgeous, a girl is naturally expected to trust the guy who does everything in his power and beyond to care for her and save her. A guy who cares for her happiness more than his own. Who would let her go even though he is madly in love with her. (the divorce choice).

Instead of the guy who made a bunch of promises and turned his back on her."

No, Wook didn't purposely tell Soo the wrong position of CP to save her from the battle. The roads in and out were blocked, remember? If he really wanted to save her than he would bring her himself out of palace.

My theory is, sorry #teamwook, he told her the position of CP to instill the idea in her mind to ask help from somebody else instead of trying to reach CP herself. He didn't only tell the position, he also told her it was far away and she wouldn't be able to get him ON HER OWN. That way he made it so Soo would come to someone for help, which was definitely So. She would tell him about the treason, he would have no choice other than defending the throne, and Wook would be able to fight and hopefully kill him. And he wouldn't be punished since he was CP's saviour.

He was simply using Soo as a bait to catch So and throw him into the battle so he could kill him. That's why Soo said Wook was using her to kill So. And Wook didn't deny it.

As for the look on Wook's face when he saw Soo, he wasn't afraid, he felt betrayed. The treason information served as 2nd test for Soo, and seeing So and the army were well prepared, he knew Soo had betrayed him by telling So. But what he failed to understand is Soo didn't betray him for So, but for her own conscience and logic. Treason is wrong and she couldn't just let it happen w/o doing something.

#teamwook! lol

Everything you're saying makes sense to me yeah.

Both So and Wook say they are doing what they are doing to "get a girl" essentially. It's nice to see when Su acts of her own accord and not just become a possession. (this is all coming from a guy btw. I saw someone watching this episode on their phone and I wanted to talk to them but they walked too quickly damnit). And this is why I thought Wook and Su were so good in the beginning because she had to fight her feelings for Wook because of Lady Hae and just from that I wish Wook would see and understand how Su acts of her own will to do what is essentially right - not stealing your cousins husband, etc. - which I believe was a reason that Wook liked her so much because for that generation, Su was a completely different person. Now she's kind of a sobby lump but I'm sure she'll turn around soon. #TEAMWOOK!

Yeah, Wook ship has sunk and Hae Su figures it out, FINALLY! Girl needs to stop listening to sweet words and observe. Wook hasn't done jack sh*t for her while So's actions have put his life on the line again and AGAIN for her.

I think Su is just following her instincts even if her heart hadn't figured out yet in the beginning of episode 13, that So can be trusted and Wook can't. They were both testing each other when Wook was asking if the king was dead. If she really believed in Wook, she would have given him the information, even after the king warned her. But back to So, yeah, he's been there for her 100% of the time, so of course her instinct would be to trust So over Wook even if her heart wasn't ready to let Wook go at that point.

Like Wook says, it doesn't matter which prince he takes out, as long as it's one less for him to battle to reach the throne. Either way, Wook positioned himself to be in an advantageous position, get rid of team CP/So or Yo. Priorities? Haha. I still don't think the writers make Wook's transition to the dark side very convincing. But I really don't care at this point. We just need to acknowledge he's turned dark and let the plot unfold.

I think the complexity of each character in this is what keeps us all glued to the screen and thinking endlessly about the many layers of each character....watching the c-version of this really prepared me better to understand that this is no simple story about someone wanting to be King. I'm not sure I would understand the story as well if I had just watched the K-version for the first time. Having said that Wooks character is kind of fascinating especially the way he is being portrayed in the K-version. The actor playing him is nailing it. He's doing such a good job that he keeps us the viewers guessing at his true intentions....Is that truly love for So? Why did he do that?....I find one episode very interesting in understanding Wook , when Wook rescues So and Jung from the bandits. Afterwards Wook is truly shaken and tells So he thought he would loose her. I kept wondering if the scene in the woods chasing the assasins wasn't scarier, So even had her neck cut by a sword, but he seemed fine afterwards even consoling So. If you view Wook as someone who is extremely jealous , Jung might actually be someone that threatened Wook more because it looked like So had feelings for him, hugging him. He also, sees that So is falling for Soo (the snow scene)....I always wondered if the original Hae Soo wasn't trying to kill herself in the water and Wook already had a relationship with her before Hae JIn appered inside her body. Wooks fear all along might be loosing Hae So to someone else.....

I find it heart-shattering that Yo was willing to kill So in cold blood while the younger brother cried when he thought he killed the older brother who was never ever kind to him. It hurts that So wept because it reveals just how deep his love for his family actually is. It makes me think, like to his mother, that he actually wanted Yo's love too....

Well that was a decent episode with action, angst and a little romance.
That last scene with a stricken So being comforted by Soo was perfect.
He is still Wang So, not the feared king he will become. He feels guilt for stabbing a brother who would not hesistate to kill him.
Why? Because at heart So is still the mistreated boy who longs for affection from a family who sent him away.
But power corrupts people so who knows how he will turn out in the end.
Wook has embraced the Dark Side. I expect him to appear next time with tons of eyeliner like a certain older brother.
And like any villain, He-Who-Wears-Eyeliner-A-Lot survived the cliff scene and will appear to wreak havoc at the palace next time. I don't like Yo's new do and facial hair though.
I wonder if So and Soo will have to live in exile or be on the run during Yo's reign.
I suppose Princess YH will get to marry So so he can claim the throne.
Poor Hae Soo. I think she will end up following in Court Lady Oh's footsteps. The king's beloved but never his queen.
However, I could do without the romance between the 13th Prince and the ex-princess turned dancer. They have no chemistry. She can't act or dance either.

Yeah, they really don't. I've been surprised by Nam Joo-hyuk in this drama, but then he's heaps better in supporting roles than he is as a lead - he sold the bro-chemistry with Lee Jun-ki and the friend-chemistry with IU quite well (despite the weird and rushed way it was set up with one flashback), but I'm pretty indifferent to the romance. Partly because the actress is so awkward, I find it hard to care much about her character.

I'm so over men making decisions about women's lives, feelings, and emotions for them. Wook, you don't get to say, "I'm going to win you back". You can attempt to win Su back, but, in the end, it is Su's decision and hers alone if you are successful in your attempt or not. If that isn't acceptable to you, tough shit. The door is to the left; don't let it hit you on the ass on your way out.

I'm definitely done with men manhandling women, grabbing them and pulling them into embraces without warning or consent, and--even worse--continuing to hold her/holding her tighter when the woman is making it clear she does not want to be held.

So irritates the hell out of me with how he's shown, episode after episode, he doesn't respect Su's comfort zone, her personal boundaries, and when she says 'no' and 'stop'. He lied to her about not kissing her until he had permission, and he treated that whole thing like it was all a big joke. No. It. Is. Not. Consent matters. Only when So gets it through his head that he must respect a woman's personal autonomy should Su consider him for any other role than 'friend'.

That's why I gave up on the romance in this show early. I cannot take So and Su's romance seriously, knowing that theirs started with a lot of So disregarding Su's wishes one too many times. My 21st century morals won't allow it.

I'm only focusing on the war for the throne. I'm rooting for Yeon-hwa to get the throne. Hae Su to get the hell out from Goryeo. I'd rather have her stay quietly in Hubaekje and live in peace.

From the preview we saw that So is going to marry his niece, somehow it's lined perfectly with history. According to wikipedia his other wife which he only has children with is queen Dae Mook, the sister of Wook. Sorry but maybe I miss something here and I am quite foreign with K-history/saeguk, but is Dae Mook = Yeon Hwa? Is it written somewhere historically about this?

Regarding white hair over two nights it must be ridiculous and not scientifically proven, but it happens. After my father's death I developed bunch of white hair (in just one spot), at one week I've got this skunk like hair. Maybe the severity is depend on how much shock and how the body recuperate…. I dunno.. just a thought.

I think genetics also contributes to the white hair - I found my first one when I was 13, and had a few here and there but there were only 4-5 in the inner layers of my hair until a time when I was under a lot of stress at work - it wasn't immediately evident because of my hairstyle at the time, but one day I pulled it all back into a ponytail and found a section of hair that was practically salt-and-pepper because there were so many new white hairs. And this was in just a matter of weeks, a bit like yours.

I agree I don't buy this change in Wook.

See wook was essentially passive. So i don't buy his sudden turnaround into a criminal mastermind. Had YH come up with the plan, i would have bought it.

In fact it makes no sense how someone as Queen Hairwoes and eyeliner prince got outwitted by a basic scheme. What we have always seen is that the queen factors in all permutations and combinations. To not have a backup incase their new ally turned on them is just beyond belief

One can say that Wook always kept everything hidden. But the problem is that the show has not SHOWN us that he is capable of anything like this. Ever. The show hinted that he had hidden his ambitions. But the ability to achieve those ambitions were never shown. I don't buy it

It's called bad characterization. The writing on this show hasn't exactly been subtle. Wook is the love rival/antagonist so he turned from passive coward to ambitious, calculating villain with basically zero foreshadowing. Mainly over a girl no less. So is the hero so he has been written to elicit maximum love and sympathy. From the sad childhood, the loyalty/devotion, to the needy possessiveness that is "romantic". And the coup de grace? Casting Lee Joon Gi who is ridiculously pretty in the role and who can emote like nobody business. I keep getting suck back in just to watch him.

The most disappointing thing for me is the writing for Su. I can't get behind the main ship because I find her so meh. Every time she's on screen I find myself re-writing her character or hoping that we have gotten another heroine altogether. It doesn't help that IMO, IU and LJG chemistry is flatter than expired soda.

That must be a matter of opinion because I've found the chemistry good till this point.

But I agree we've had strong doses of bad characterization.

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, opinion will varies when it comes to something as subjective as chemistry. For me, the lack of chemistry comes from the mismatch between LJG and IU's acting abilities. IU is doing a fair job, but she's not exactly a strong actress. LJG essentially acts circles around her. It doesn't help that he has such a strong presence that it fairly overwhelmed her. The results is that while he's emoting at her, she just ended up looking bewildered in their scenes together. A stronger actress might be able to mitigate the poor characterization, but the combination of weak chemistry and meh writing is the death knelt for the ship as far as I'm concern.

I think IU has better chemistry with KHN because his presence isn't so overpowering. Too bad their ship was doomed right from the start.

@KillingTime And the coup de grace? Casting Lee Joon Gi who is ridiculously pretty in the role and who can emote like nobody business. I keep getting suck back in just to watch him.

Preach it. Although, I would say that LJG makes Wang So a little less trope-like in the anti-hero. He at least registers regret (initially) after the forced kiss. And even when he's "possessive" of her (episode 9-10), it's blunted by his considerate treatment of her. He has stopped bulldozing.

On a side note, I am frustrated that LJG is such a great actor, but his drama projects always seem to fail to disappoint in the ratings. While I’m not bothered by ratings, obviously my livelihood does not depend on them.

While I have nothing against IU as an actress, I would agree that LJG overshadows her, as he seems to do with most actresses who are a great deal younger/more inexperienced than he. He need someone has talented and skilled working in tandem with him, rather than him compensating.

0

I actually think IU has surprisingly (given her inexperience) good chemistry with Lee Jun-ki - I enjoyed the more relaxed scenes they had together in the early episodes when they were just friends and on more equal footing, they had a really comfortable, natural vibe that seemed good to ripen into more when the time came.

Of course, he is by far the more accomplished actor but I don't think his younger costars (IU, Lee Yubi) are entirely to blame for their projects either - I'd seen excellent performances out of both before, which leads me to suspect directing and scripting are more to blame. IU's actually doing much better once she's allowed to emote in a natural way, the last couple of weeks especially.

0

Also, in terms of ranking Lee Jun-ki's chemistry with leading ladies in his post-military dramas, I feel like IU's my second favourite of the lot (first by a long margin being Shin Mina in Arang & the Magistrate). It kind of goes like this:

5. Nam Sang-mi
4. Park Ha-sun (though it's worth remembering that Two Weeks really wasn't romance-focused at all, her appearance there was more 'mother of his child' than 'love interest')
3. Lee Yubi
2. IU
1. Shin Mina

I dont buy the idea that he changed, like what haesoo said. He has always had it in him, by the way he prepped himself with knowledge and fighting skills, just that he doesnt show it (at least to other princes) often. Him being manipulative and persistent towards his ambitions, have been very evident for me. It's just that his endgame has always been king, thats why it could be argued that we havent seen anything of him yet. As he said himself, he wants his pave to king to be clean.

So far the only event that could increase his chance was the rain event. But i dont think he would test his luck there, since there were possibilities it wouldnt rain at all thus he would be hated. Nor do i think he would personally kill the king or crown prince. His plan was to use yo to do the dirty work and kill off yo, making him a hero.

Cant believe im doing this, but in the evil queen's defense, she had no part in the king murder attempt and the rebellion. Yo shouldve consulted with her tho, that way even if they failed at least she wouldve had a plan to shift the blame. I doubt she would trust the hwangbos as much as yo did since she saw herself in yeonhwa.. The queen also had always wanted to have the king deliberately give the throne to yo. One bcs she does care abt the king. Two to ensure yo receive support from the king's supporters. Her aim has always been the crown prince...

"...in the evil queen’s defense, she had no part in the king murder attempt and the rebellion."

Yes, that's true; I had forgotten that Yo kept this plot to kill the king a secret from her because she loves the king so much. She was all about assassinating Mu, so that Yo could cut ahead in line to take the throne.

So her extreme grief/shock reaction when the king dies makes sense.

I'm surprised so many Beanies have never heard of the extremely common trope of "hair turning white overnight" from extreme grief, shock, fright, stress or other trauma. Not to say it's necessarily a scientifically proven phenomenon, but it has been recorded in histories (someone mentioned Marie Antoinette, but I think Mary, Queen of Scots as well) and it has been commonly told in stories for centuries.

Here it's just a graphic depiction of the huge emotional blow and shock Queen SMSS suffered.

I disagree about Wook. From the very first episode Wook has been portrayed as what I call "The Prom King". He's the scholar, the athlete and the calm cool and collected guy in the room. He's the guy his brothers looked to for rationality. He's not a headstrong guy like So, he's a thinker. I also don't find him to be "evil". He's been So's rival for Su from day one. He just didn't realize it, why? Because he's The Prom King that's why. All the boys are princes and at some point every single one of them has behaved like one. It's just that So has displayed the characteristics of a king from the first episode. You have to be smart and cunning but also decisive. Wook is indecisive. But like all Prom Kings Wook is made of sterner stuff than the average guy. He's the kind of player that once he gets in the game he plays it all out. He just hadn't decided to get off the bench until now.

@TJ, I know, Wook was portrayed as a flawless knight in shining armor, but one that ultimately doesn't deliver. Not any fault in KHN's acting but soley the responsibility of the director and editor.

The directing and editing did poorly to characterize him as a cunning villain. We rarely saw him as a bad guy, and So was the one who was bad, such as pushing Su off his horse and then holding a sword to Su's throat (after she saw the assassins) while Wook talked him out of it and saved Su.

We only saw glimpses of this version of the evil and greedy Wook.

Remember how YH was whipping Su and So was the first one to stop her? So said "She belongs to me". After that, Wook told off So, saying that no one or anything (in his home) belongs to So. Territorial much, Wookie?

Wook was a nice guy because he let So live in his home but that hospitality and nice persona basically would end if Wook feels threatened by So, LIKE NOW.

I just hate how this drama objectifies Hae Su as a prize, but that girl needs to smarten up. She cannot just sit idly by and observe as a time traveler. She needs to actively get involved and if that shapes history, so be it. She just needs to get So on the throne, even at the cost of her love and life :(

loong Time lurker, First time commenting :) did anyone notice So had eyeliner in the last scene where he was crying into Su's shoulder..? also,( I watched the scene without audio and with Subs, so I could possibly be making a mistake ) did anyone notice So's face scrunch up with determination right before the scene froze and the episode ended, or is it my imagination? Because it is LJK, am asking.. :)

My theory is that So does want to be King - he's just weighing his options like Wook, we just don't see the calculations going on in his mind, as the show portrays him as a truly innocent child with a sword. Yes, he truly loves Su and would give up the throne for her, but feels like he is biding his time..
Also, So is my most fav character on this show, LJK is so so expressive and has so many micro expressios, that it's always a treat to watch him without audio.. actually most of the actors in this show are expressive, except for HS.. I feel like I've been conned a bit. The writer of this episode has done what I felt was a stellar job intertwining real Korean history, themes and plots from BBJX, Korean myth, the tragic with the comic, great characters. I thought it was just the editor and sometimes the director responsible for the jolts in logic and contradictions in characterization and emotion. Now I'm not so sure. These last two episodes, while still good on an emotional level, were just so badly done in terms of continuity, logic, pacing. I'm feeling a little down about the whole thing because I really do love it for the most part, but I've lost confidence I'm going to be happy with it by the end. It's getting harder and harder to ignore the flaws.

Su at least seemed a lot brighter in this episode, so much so that I assume the last conversation she had with Wook was her turn in testing him. She needed to know if he was really doing all that for her, she needed to know if he would still hold out his hand for her like he used to. Despite being met with unsatisfying answers, it was all the closure that she needed, which is why I felt like the last scene of this episode was symbolizing Su's willingness to move on.

It's almost ironic how the man she thought would be a horrific monster turned out to be the man who will leave everything behind for her both then and now while the man she thought would never change could cast her away without batting an eye.

And Jung, he's a good guy but he needs to start realizing things, he's even more clueless than Su is. Between brotherhood and throne, his mother and his elder brother, Yo would choose the throne in a heartbeat. He's too naive when he thought he could convince a wild Yo on rampage. If Yo could kill his own father, he could do the same to Jung. There is no trust in the palace.
