chickachunga was my cousin’s nickname when she was in high school. Now that she’s no longer in high school, I thought I’d use it as my handle since it’s fun to say, part of my name is in it, I’m a woman, and it’s like a hybrid of “cowabunga!” and chimichanga, two words that roll off your tongue in a fun way. I guess I’m a fan of alliteration and playing with words.
I drew my avatar on my iPad; it’s a self-portrait in which I have TVs for eyes and a pencil in my hair. Did you get that I’m a TV junkie who likes to write? 🙂 I also tend to put my hair up in a bun like that.
What is the first drama that you watched (or the first drama that made an impression)?
Six Children (1998). My little sister bore a striking resemblance to the Malsooni character so I just remember so many random Koreans approaching my mom and remarking, “Omo, your kid looks like Malsoon!”
Six Children took place in post-war Korea and centered around a widow struggling to raise six children amidst crippling poverty. I don’t remember much and probably understood very little, but enough to know that this drama was sad and my tear ducts at age 7 were in full working order.
Tell us about a job or two that you’ve had in the past.
I used to be a Hollywood assistant working in TV. I read numerous scripts (most weren’t very good), rolled lots of calls (1 phone + 6 different lines = nonstop ringing), and sent/received countless emails on a daily basis.
Have you ever lived a moment that you thought belonged in a drama?
On a particularly rainy day, a truck zipped through a huge puddle, and I got drenched from head to toe. No handsome guy swooped in and shielded me, either.
What’s your favorite drama that you recapped?
Beautiful Gong Shim. The reason’s obvious when you look at what else I’ve recapped!
What drama genres do you especially like?
Workplace, high school, dark and suspenseful thrillers, snappy rom-com, coming-of-age… As long as the writing and directing are solid, I’m not picky when it comes to genres.
What drama genres do you especially dislike?
Makjang. No Im Sung-han makjangs for me, thank you. Not a fan of the whole baiting for eyeballs by way of randomly killing off characters.
Is there a drama character you’ve ever strongly identified with, and why?
Answer Me 1988’s Sung Bora. Just like Bora, I’m a nerd with major RBF.
What was your major in school?
Film & Television.
What’s a random skill you have?
I can play the double bass, and I’m really good with names. I’m also an oracle of random knowledge and can identify obscure actors from their previous works.
Favorite non-Korean movie and/or TV show?
Favorite TV shows: Breaking Bad, House of Cards, Parks and Recreation, Fleabag.
Which Hallyu celebrity would you actually want to meet and spend an hour with?
Ryu Joon-yeol. He’s well-traveled, speaks English, and seems pretty down to earth.
Which of the 7 deadly sins would be your undoing? (Pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, or sloth.)
Pride. I can’t help it!
Your favorite drama has an unholy alliance with your most hated drama and produces a mutant baby drama. Describe the plot.
A rising movie star named Cha Young-bin quits acting (turns out he was just a pretty face) and goes corporate, working an ordinary 9-to-5 job in a cubicle and getting whipped by a demanding boss, and ultimately finds out that he was a spoiled, undeserving brat all this time when he visits Petra. Yes, it is in Petra that knowledge and common sense suddenly flood his pretty head. Better late than never.

When someone tells me their name, I say it out loud/repeat it back to them while maintaining eye contact!

I've no idea what are the 2 parent dramas of the mutant baby drama are. But again, as usual mutant baby drama is the best part in *get to know db staff* post. Its so much fun ?

Dear @chickachunga , I forgot to mention this but your drama moment reminded of an exact, if worse, situation 4 years ago. I was going home from my college on a very rainy day on my bike, I was wearing my raincoat so I wasn't soaked, that is, until a guy on one of those speedy bikes crossed me spraying me with water till my waist, as if that wasn't enough, a huge truck crossed me literally drenching me with water from head to toe. My raincoat held up pretty well, & I went home, silently wishing (cursing) that those criminals get a flat tire.

My orchestra director in high school made me play double bass one year (I played violin usually) because we had none. It's strung in 4ths instead of 5ths so I had no idea what note I was playing ever, I just picked random notes that sounded good and went with that.

I only got the Misaeng reference on your mutant baby drama. Then i read in the comments that the other is Entourage. No wonder i didnt know. I avoided that show like a plague, partly due to the negative reviews.

I've tried to delete the last couple of Lucky Romance episodes I have more than once, but then I do a quick skip-watch looking for RJY scenes, and I get a goofy grin on my face and tell myself "next time".
