Hyun Bin, Park Shin-hye courted for healing SBS melodrama

This would certainly be a star-powered coupling: Hyun Bin (Swindlers; Hyde, Jekyll, Me) and Park Shin-hye (Doctors) are both currently in talks to star in a human melodrama from the writer of Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim, to air on SBS. The drama’s title translates literally to Fox Bride Star, although I’m not 100 percent committed to that reading; it’s a made-up term and not explained, so I’m going with literal for now.

The plot centers around a man and woman who meet in Seoul, and they heal the scars in each other’s hearts as they encounter music, food, people, and stories. That’s fairly generic-sounding, but I’m recalling how Romantic Doctor took a medical setting and filled it with quirky characters and interesting relationships, so that’s what I’m hoping for this drama, particularly if we get these two stars to come onboard. Mostly, I just want Hyun Bin to do dramas again, so we can erase the memory of the bad ones. I know he’s been doing much better in the film realm, but nobody should want Hyde, Jekyll, Me to be the last word they leave in a genre!

Hyun Bin’s potential character is a genius (sigh) advertising executive who has risen to the top, but in his life’s best moment, he suffers the worst accident. Park Shin-hye’s character is of a 27-year-old woman whose father died nine years ago while saving another person’s life, leaving her all alone in the world. She’s left to figure out how to get by in this world, made tougher when she loses both her compensation and support funding. But when she meets our hero, they start to heal each other’s pain and change for the better.

The drama reunites Hyun Bin with his Secret Garden director, PD Shin Woo-chul, who also directed A Gentleman’s Dignity and Gu Family Book in the intervening years. PD Shin has also worked with writer Kang Eun-jung before on Gu Family Book, though her two dramas since then have been much more successful (cheerful weekend family drama What’s With This Family and Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim).

Fox Bride Star is being considered for a Monday-Tuesday drama slot on SBS later this year.

My thoughts exactly. Is 'healing' a trendy word among the drama industry these days?

Move over chaebol-with-scars - you're old news with your plain old rom coms and melodramas. It's time for the middle-class-kid-with-scars-who-rose-to-the-top-through-hard-work-and-genius to shine in a 'healing' drama.

Please try Just Between Lovers if you haven't yet. Its a good "healing" melodrama in all terms; writing, acting, and directing. It gives you many life lessons. Even if it has chaebol with scars, but it isnt the main point of this drama and not even the OTP are chaebol. Instead you got "middle-class-kid-with-scars-who-rose-to-the-top-through-hard-work-and-genius to shine in a 'healing' drama".
The drama is about ptsd and how the characters overcome it.

heheehe I based "middle-class-kid-with-scars-who-rose-to-the-top-through-hard-work-and-genius to shine in a 'healing' drama" largely on JBL. :) And then thought of the other dramas that have been descrirbed as 'healing' dramas and felt it fit.

It IS good. But I'm stuck on ep 5. Somehow haven't been able to pick it up. Life?

Unless they decided to go full on slice-of-life, I don't see how a "healing" drama is any different from a regular drama where the hero has something tragic or traumatic happen to him in the past and he finds love with the perfect-for-him woman. Is "healing" shorthand for "they're both equally traumatized and broken"?

Ironically, the only one which I could actually call healing drama is Just Between Lovers, in all others it was impossible to relate to male lead and at some point, when healing should have started, main leads would go on infamous Noble idiot's path

Required fields are marked *

Err.. Actually My Name is Kim Sam Soon is what really made him popular... Secret Garden was so so to me, but It got the best ratings in its slot when it was aired. So basically, the only drama that should be erased from memory is Hyde Jekyll Me. I personally loved Snow Queen even as I hated its end and in spite of its poor audience... and Worlds Within was an attempt at something different but the audience didn't follow BUT both these dramas were airing at a time when basically ratings that you see on weekend shows nowadays were seen during the week... which left little audience for those who didn't manage first place.

Friend Our Legend... was a pity. Good drama but let's be honest here, all the actors probably knew they weren't going for high ratings with this one... due to its genre.

Basically there are many here, me among them, who would be glad he came back to dramas... But he's like Lee Joon Ki. Great actor... who has had bad luck picking up popular projects...

Apart from Hyde Jekyll Me though... I do think he is careful about the quality at least.

Required fields are marked *

I agree, I always thought some of the hateful comments I read about her are extreme. Her acting has always been fine. But even as someone who is a fan, I do understand a little bit why people might dislike her or discredit her acting. Her early roles were all quite similar, such that she didn't have to use the widest range of expression and emotion. Especially with rom-coms, there's always a certain level of cringe and cheese (this is true even for great rom-coms), so to see her in those same kinds of roles with all the cringe and those stiff kiss scenes...I can understand where someone might get the impression that she can't do much else. Don't get me wrong, I love You're Beautiful, but when I watch it now, I literally laugh at how corny it is. A lot of that probably has to do with the script and direction. BUT she's grown and started to expand her range in recent years. One of the things I really think she's improved on is that her characters feel a lot more natural and real. This could be also how she's picking her projects.

Shinhye has been fine then till now. She was quirky and sassy in Cute or Crazy, Angsty in Very Merry Christmas, brilliant in Stairway & Tree of Heaven. She also excel in romcoms such as YAB & HS. She was good in Kimcheed Radish Cube, Heirs, Doctors & FBND.

0

Required fields are marked *

I understand too. As someone who likes her, I can also admit the reasons why she might get those comments. I’m being honest in saying that although I eagerly watched YAB when it came out, it was definitely very cringy and corny now that I look back years later. But so were most of the dramas at that time. Her dramas, the body of her work has followed the ’it’ trends of the times they came out. I also can say that she needs to grow as an actress because she hasn’t proved yet that she is truly an actress through and through. I can also say that she needs versatility.
But people are acting like she’s ’unbearable’ and people on here have been calling her a sponsor girl and someone who bribed her way, although she worked her ass off since she was a middle schooler, without any big agency backing.
The kiss scene rant in every PSH article is slowly getting on my nerves too. It’s every time the same; ’’I hope she can kiss better’’ or ’’LJS taught her kissing but she’s still bad, maybe she kissed LJS only because she’s dating him kekeke’’. These people also bring up those Heirs and Heartstrings kiss scenes, when it was not her fault that they were bad. They conveniently forget that PDs, directors and script writers play a major role in those scenes. These people keep trashing her as an actress and as a person just because of those kiss scenes. They forget any progress she has made and that she had good kiss scenes in Doctors, Flowerboy Next Door and Pinocchio. I honestly don’t know what they want? That’s why I think PSH should not come back in dramas and do movies instead. It’s hard for fans but I’m tired of seeing fan wars and hate against her.

On one hand, her with Hyun Bin could potentially be great, especially with this writer who wrote one of my favorite dramas Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim. On the other hand, I’m not thrilled about this plot and the director, who, sure, directed hallyu hits but I have a feeling he will make a typical chaebol - poor girl story here which is not what I want to either of these actors. I do kinda hope they both stay in Chungmuro and take films instead of dramas unless a really good drama comes their way.

If these two confirm this drama, this might be one of the most anticipated drama this year. My only concern, the premise doesn't sound that interesting, and very much depends on the writing and execution. I hope this writer follows her style in RTDK and create many other awesome characters, because besides Han Suk-kyu as Kim Sabu, I found supporting characters made that drama much more enjoyable to watch. I would not have finished it if more than 70% of that drama focused on romance between the OTP only, though.

I so agree with you. Given the star power courted, one would hope that the drama would at least have a more exciting premise. This sounds insipid at the outset and then we pin our hopes (as you have) on inspired writing and characterizing.

This is another example of a "no risk" approach to drama making, which is such a pity.

The premise sounds fit for a movie imo. I hope this one won't be another Temperature of Love - the premise is different, but both are similar in the less interesting premise. For some unknown reason, I have been thinking that this drama will be something like TOL ever since I read about it when Park Shin-hye's casting news was released. Anyway I enjoyed many drama from this writer, so I'm expecting it will turn out well despite of less interesting premise.

We can hope. The two leads are A-list stars so we should assume they can pick only the scripts that interest them. Given just their salaries (likely approaching or exceeding 2m USD combined), one would believe that any production company casting both of them would pair it with a pretty solid writing. But these are all assumptions.

Who cares about the the premise of the drama these days, when it's PSH?...... Again, even if only her name is shown, it will be a high ratings, I bet millions of dollars on this.... LOL.... she already did a lot of "briberies" giving donations, commericals etc.... Even if the drama has poor plot, who cares, it will still be a huge hit... and this in only in Korea, right?..... Just a very unjustified and "cruel" entertainment.... That's Park Shin Hye's magic....
And also, Hyun Bin needs to regain his earnings back in kdrama... remember that he can not earn big bucks again due to what happened in his kdrama, Hyde Jekyll and I...... So he needs to be with PSH, no matter what.. money matters of course.. forget about the story!... LOL...

So in short... this will be a big hit and top in ratings, and psh will be the best actress already..... lol....and no need to talk about the story, her appearance is enough..... lol...

I have fond memories watching What Happened to My Family, but I haven't watched Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim, so I do not have any comments about the show. This show should be a promising TV series in my opinion. Another positive thing is that Park Shinhye is partnered with a competent scriptwriter and actor. Her acting tends to be "clean" when she is nestled in a favorable condition.

THats true..... there’s no need for the writer to put an effort on this...... who cares about the story if its psh, she has lots of fans to watch it no matter what.... the fans only wants to see her face and doesnt care about the plot...... and yeah hyun bin needs to get back his price tag.......

The actors are too talented for such a crappy plot. If Hyun Bin wants us to forget his last mess of a drama, he needs a better sounding project. And while PSH's dramas seem to do well most of the times, her last drama wasn't that particularly good either, so I would have hoped for something better for both of them, but they wouldn't have revealed their names if this wasn't pretty much a given, so good luck to them. I hope this doesn't suck that much and that it doesn't air at the same time as Kim Eun Sook's drama. That will kill any drama's popularity.

Mr. Sunshine is slated for the beginning July, whereas this is for June - so they will clash lol.
Guardian and Romantic Doctor aired around the same time as well, but both were able to do well. So if the writing and directing is competent, I don't think this drama will be buried.
Besides, Hyun Bin and Park Shinhye actually has the advantage this time round since their romantic pairing is more believable than... Lee Byunghun and Kim Taeri (poor KTR, really).

Interesting so Hyun Bin and Park Shin Hye are up against Lee Byung Hun, Kim Tae Ri, Yoo Yeon Seok and Byun Yo Han.
Now I can see why they offering a big name like Hyun Bin as the male lead.

will they be a romantic couple? (seem so) Dramas now love uncle-niece couples sooo much (and honestly I've never bought any of their chemistry so far lol). Hyunbin is not that old (PSH even acted w Kim Raewon) thou he's old enough to move on more mature actresses.

The thing for uncle-niece "chemistry" is while those uncles are (too) capable in acting love, while most (if not all, yes) young actresses fail to deliver passionate loving emotion => unbalanced/passive rls. On the other hand I find auntie/noona-young man work much better on screen lmao (the woman who still wants to married, secret love affair)

Poor Hyun Bin.

That's maybe because you just see her in the heirs and by the way it's not her fault because at the time the actor and PD didn't tell her about the kissing scene, she can do good kissing scenes in flower boy next door, pinocchio and doctors,so stop say something like that

That story about the director not telling her about the kissing scene is false. She was very much aware of it in the BTS video. I think she's a great actress, but we have to admit that kissing scenes are not her forte. That's fine though, dramas are too conservative for an actor to even need good kissing skills anyway.

Lee min ho said in the interview that he and director didn't tell her before, that's the fact, and she portray a high school student and they even not a boyfriend and girlfriend in that scene so her reaction seems to be like that, but ok people will always talk about this whatever improvement she make people just want to hate her for whatever reason

It is a little surprising to see how HB, who after the massive phenomenon that was Secret Garden for a while was the biggest thing in kdrama, now is met with only little more than a meh.

I don’t get why having an opinion makes you a hater. I’ve seen almost every drama and movie PSH has been in, starting with Tree of Heaven and although her acting is serviceable it’s not great. For me it’s because I can feel/see that she’s conscious of how she’s looks on screen especially in her crying scenes. I think it was during interviews for Heirs she said a director told her it was an actresses job to look pretty even as they cry 🤦🏻‍♀️ which I think was horrible advice. PSH has an eye for picking great projects but I also think if all the dramas she has done didn’t have the great costars they did her acting alone wouldn’t be able to carry the drama. Basically if she’s ever paired with someone as green as Nam Joo Hyuk, the cracks in her acting would be more noticeable

She should take any advice/direction the director of Heirs gave her and bury it deep underground. That drama was an epic train wreck

I don’t think it was that director who told her the advice but she mentioned it during one of the press interviews for The Heirs. But yea only Kim Woobin and maybe a few side chacaters walked away unscathed by The Heirs haha

So you are saying lee wan, se7en, Jung Yonghwa or Lee Min Ho’s acting is great? She worked with many people but why would she work with lesser actors when she can work with better ones?
Of course better actors with better scripts and characters would bring out the better in her. Same with other actors. Even best actors can’t save the drama if you give them shitty roles and horrible cast.
Shinhye does have good eyes on picking projects but I wouldn’t say she relied fully on her costars. She acted with CMS in her recent movie and the director commented that she can hold her own

With the exception of Yonghwa and Se7en , the actors you listed I personally find to be good. Goong 2 was a hot mess of acting all around (minus the second male lead) and cold response to the drama reflects that. You’re Beautiful did well because PSH and JGS are extremely popular within the Hallyu wave. Heartstrings didn’t do too well ratings wise even though they thought the viewers who had second lead syndrome from You’re Beautiful would be all over it. And I agree that great actors and a great script will bring to the greatest out of you and maybe I should have made my point more clear but I don’t think her acting will ever elicit comments like her “acting is only one good thing about this drama” like Jisung with Entertainer or Jo Jung Seok with Two Cops.

NOPE. She is one big reason why her dramas have been a success too. It’s all about team work. Even the best actors, the cream of all actors have bad and flop projects. I’m tired of people constantly discrediting Park Shin hye as an actress. She can definitely hold on her own and she's only 27

You’re entitled to your opinion and I’m entitled to mine. And yes even top actors have flops but like I said above, my main point was I don’t think her acting will ever elicit comments like her “acting is only one good thing about this drama” like Jisung with Entertainer or Jo Jung Seok with Two Cops. So we can agree to disagree

Yeah sure. Of course you’re entitled to your opinion. Don’t be,however, surprised when people call you out on your ridiculousness. Because, your argument was a little poor. I never saw anywhere people saying that Ji Sung’s or Jo Jung Suk’s acting in their respective dramas were the only good thing. Rather, I saw comments that the subpar writing and inexperienced (read: bad) co-actress brought these actors' acting down to a bad light too.
Additionally, with your logic, some people might say that Park Shin hye’s acting was the only good thing in Doctors (this drama is so hated on db to the point that I feel like a lot of vitriol against it has got a lot to do with the fact that Doctors slayed the existence of Beautiful Mind). Basis to this claim? Her acting, along with the chemistry, brought in the viewers. How do I know? Because her character caused a ’girl crush syndrome’ and the ’JiHye couple’ was very much talked about in Korean sites and that’s a fact.
But sure, she’s bad at acting, she can’t hold on her own and all the viewers watch her dramas because of oppaaaa, not good enough for oppa, her kiss scenes oh mai gooooddd so terrible uwu.
I’m not saying she’s the best, I even agree with constructive criticism. But some, actually many, of the comments against her on db are so condescending, passive-aggressive, repetitive and unoriginal. All of them are very biased (which apparently is fine because, hey, opinions) and totally dismiss PSH both as an actress and even as a person. Yeah, so you do you while PSH will keep earning positive reviews (like she did from Blackened Heart, critics stated that she held on her own very well next to Choi Min Sik) and she will keep getting better at her craft while you will keep staying bitter about her success and speculating with things you possibly wouldn’t have any idea of.

I could write you a term paper with footnotes to make my points but you’d be too disgruntled to care and frankly your rant ending with you’re bitter about her success is off putting and immature. I’d never mentioned “oppa” this “oppa” that or omg she’s so bad at kissing scenes because guess what not all girls are immature fans with delusions that they can have oppa and oppa is the best

0

@heyitschristina Go ahead and write me that term paper with foot notes, I don’t mind a proper discussion, not at all. I will dissect some of the content of your comment; ’’--but I also think if all the dramas she has done didn’t have the great costars they did her acting alone wouldn’t be able to carry the drama. Basically if she’s ever paired with someone as green as Nam Joo Hyuk, the cracks in her acting would be more noticeable’’. Okay. You talked about Jo Jong Suk and Ji Sung who were paired with Hyeri, whom many consider bad (in fact, in terms of acting, she could be likened to the ’green' Nam Joo Hyuk). Both of their dramas failed in ratings and failed to receive critical acclaim. If you think that Ji Sung and JJS are great actors, why did their drama failed to get ratings and critical success? Can they not hold on their own? Doesn’t this mean that the ’’cracks in these male stars acting is noticeable’’? If you’re going to make an argument, at least base it on facts and not your biases. Sorry if I came off as rude but your comment came off as condescending and biased.

Look at this point this conversation has been pretty much been rendered useless and nothing constructive is coming from it and we can go back and forth with articles that support our opinion.
I’m just going to leave the dictionary’s definition of opinion here : o·pin·ion
noun
noun: opinion; plural noun: opinions
a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.

So as I was trying reiterate I don’t think anyone should be called out for having an opinion because no one is trying to call it a fact

0

If it’s Park Shin Hye being courted for a drama of someone she’s worked with before, I’m pretty sure she will sign on, as she seems to like to work repeatedly with people she’s already worked with before, not that it’s a bad thing 😉

I think PSH criteria is based on the plot involving human drama and the character she gets to play....FBND, Pinocchio, DWIAG, Doctors....Specially, all her movie roles small and not so small are based on that...CA, MOR7,The Royal Tailor, HB. Nowadays playing such challenging maturer roles and professionals like lawyer, doctors seem to appeal to her more and more.

She has been in the industry for so long that by now has come to know lot of people in front and behind the camera. Her costars have all been different except JYH early on. But, have worked with many who work behind the scenes as seen in Pinocchio, doctors etc. Not surprising at all. I think that must be true for all artists.
Like you say it is not a bad thing. When working for months on a project it is relaxing to be among those you are comfortable with and also helps in producing a good production over all....

I'm actually optimistic about this. The music and food part sounds like it might be fun? I will be totally sold if its something like The Package - now that's a true healing drama with all the beautiful scenery and side stories.
Top star pairings are always exciting. But it might be a pressure for them to get high ratings as well. I trust the writer to deliver though.

I've only seen Hyun Bin in Hyde, Jekyll and I which well...wasn't the greatest drama, but I know many people rave about his acting in his other works. I don't think Park Shin Hye is a bad actress at all; she just hasn't come across the right career-changing character for her yet. Yoo Jung from Doctors had the potential in the beginning because of her bad-assery but as the drama progressed her character no longer stood out to me, sadly. Hopefully the drama is a lot more promising than its description (I loved Romantic Doctor). If both of them really accept this drama is going to be huuuge! Looking forward to it :)

Well she sucked the heck out of Kim Rae Won’s lips while they were almost tongue wrestling in Doctors so I really don’t know what you’re talking about.
That Heirs kiss scene, the director and LMH didn’t tell her that they were going to do a ’deep’ kiss in that scene as it was not in the script. So that’s why it looked uncomfortable. She was literally harassed at work, she was not treated as a professional actress when they didn’t tell her about the kiss scene. LMH even admitted that in an interview and in that same interview he said that he apologized to PSH afterwards. The director explained that he wanted a ’natural’ reaction so that’s why he didn’t tell PSH about the kiss scene. It’s unbelievable that she gets disrespected and harassed at her job place like that and then drama fans kill her twice by trashing her as an actress and a person. And before people come at me saying that she didn’t press charges or complain about it. Do you really think she could have said anything about it? She was 23. Women are conditioned to brush off things like that. She might not have even thought that it’s a big deal and that she has right to bodily immunity even at her job place. Do you think people would have even supported her if she said anything against them? Kim Go Eun once said in an interview after CITT that some people were needlessly complaining about things and dumb fangirls interpreted that she was shading Park Hae Jin. KGE got so much hate that it’s unimaginable. I’m saying that if PSH spoke against LMH and that director, do you really think people had been on her side? It’s a way to kill a career. That’s why abuse and harassment cases in the entertainment industry never get out because too many people in power (usually men) might destroy younger actresses.

ok, chill. I'm not into PSY to have know that stuff, so there's that, and pinocchio was with LJS who is not a nice kisser tbh, and not in the sense that his kisses scene look 'fake' but in the sense that all his co-stars look uncomfortable like dude ain't got no chill and uses too much tongue, kinda annoying tbh
