[Work, life, balance, and K-dramas] The perks of being a night owl

Shut Up Flower Boy Band

By @owl

The fact that I can get by on very little sleep has never been as useful as when I discovered K-dramas. I didn’t just come across a K-drama here and there; I careened headlong into a whole world of K-dramas past, present, and future that sucked me in like no other phenomenon I’d ever experienced.

The details of how it all started are blurry; I recall that my brother’s friend from Indonesia asked if we’d ever seen a K-drama. (“No,” we said. “Are you kidding me?” he said.) Somehow we ended up marathoning Coffee House. That’s when I discovered other K-dramas on Roku. Cute stories, pretty characters, dark tales, plot twists, something called skinship, school uniforms, back hugs, noonas and oppas, those shower scenes, chaebols, gender-bending, Seoul life—I was entranced.

Coffee House led to Coffee Prince, which led in rapid succession to Rooftop Prince, Boys Before Flowers, Stars Falling From the Sky, and Shut Up Flower Boy Band. And when I thought that my heart couldn’t take another flower boy, there was manly Lee Byung-heon in IRIS and Jang Hyuk in IRIS 2. The K-drama wave became my free-time obsession practically overnight. Now I wonder what I used to do between 8:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m.—the largest available slice of my 24-hour pie—before K-drama viewing.

This is the advantage of being a night owl. After running errands, eating dinner, and sometimes an occasional assignment for my part-time job (I, of course, also have a 9-to-5 job), the night has only begun. With a second wind kicking in, I get pumped for several hours of dreamy couples walking beneath the cherry blossom trees, part-timers working hard to pay off their family’s bills while dodging ruthless loan sharks, and rude chaebols with money dripping from their lapels turning desperate and charming after meeting a girl who couldn’t care less that they are the top one percent.

1% of Anything

You may think that I merely sit and stare at the screen for hours, but alas, tossing in a load of laundry, mating socks, and folding are mindless chores during episodes. So is opening mail, paying bills, and shopping online—all results of creative multi-tasking. I wipe down the bathroom, take out the trash, and pick up clothes to episodes of Dancing 9. With a Cinderella spin and a spoonful of sugar, I dash up the stairs two at a time for the latest episode of Law of the Jungle and a vacuum run.

Granted, it’s not every night that I watch K-dramas for several hours. I haven’t abandoned all responsibility, and I meet friends and go out, too. I think that I’m not overdoing it with K-drama talk to my friends, but then they cut me off, reminding me that I’ve already told them about the handsome warrior who time travels to the future to meet a doctor and brings her back to Goryeo to save the queen, or the ’70s lovers who lost track of one another and decades later fall in love only to discover that his son and her daughter have already fallen for each other.

Sometimes I feel like I have to justify my K-drama viewing, but think about it: my brother watches 300+ basketball games a season not including the playoffs and NBA finals. And tens of thousands of football fans are glued to the TV from September until the Super Bowl in February. Watching K-dramas is my non-sports equivalent.

Black

Here’s today’s schedule, for example: I dropped my car off for repairs before work at 8:30 a.m.; watched Hello Counselor highlights and picked up two books on hold at the library at lunch; and wrapped up the workday at 5:15 p.m. Then I stopped at the market for a few things. At 6:30 p.m. I tossed some veggies with rice for a fairly decent dinner while watching Heart Signal followed by an episode of Miss Hammarubi. I cleaned up the kitchen, called Mom during a walk, and watered the flowers and tomato plants. After texting two friends to arrange a vacation with cheap Southwest fares, I watched an episode of About Time.

Then I took a speedy shower, dried my hair, put on my pajamas and jumped into bed. I checked out a new drama, Are You Human, Too. This was followed by a 45-minute episode of my first Chinese drama, Nirvana in Fire, because so many Beanies have raved about it that I finally checked it out. (I like it.) At 1:45 a.m. I called it a night. That’s six drama/variety episodes, no sweat. My days aren’t especially affected, but I think I’ve developed a vampire-like reliance on K-dramas. Under the cover of night, I am energized by the continual supply of dramas to my system. I don’t see any slowing down in my future. Somehow I think I am in good company here.

"Watching K-dramas is my non-sports equivalent."

Yes! I never thought of it that way! I used to watch about 12 hours of football a week (NFL, not soccer), so since I gave that up, I'm allowed to watch that much kdrama! Right??? Thanks for your post!

wowww that's an inspiring tale from A Super Beanie for sure.
the way you manage work, life and kdrama with such smooth balance feels like you have mastered the art of Kdrama watching....
i hv yet to learn it... if i watch drama i just watch drama... i cant do anything else (may be cause i am still dependent on subs so leaving screen is impossible).
still you are my inspiration now and thats what i wanna be in this Kdrama land...

I definitely have to pay attention to the subs, but I'm pretty comfortable with getting the gist of the drama with multitasking all the while. I do love my moments of just watching K-dramas, though, usually at the very end of the night (or shall I say the wee hours of the morning)!

Thanks, mars. I suppose it helps that I'm a bit hyper and usually can't sit still. I like to keep busy and get stuff done. I do enjoy relaxing at the very end of the night and catch an episode or two before falling asleep.

It is funny that you say that because I have been trying to get two of my close friends into kdramas, both of them are much too hyper around their houses and they both keep telling me that they can't sit down and relax and pay attention to a drama. I should make them read your post!

Great write-up @owl! I'm at the completely opposite end of the spectrum from you in that I get up insanely early - especially in the smmer when it's light at around 4AM. It's 5.30 AM here now and I've been up for a bit. My rule is that if I get up before 6AM, I'm allowed to watch an episode of something (in this case WWWSK) over breakfast.

I also watch dramas as I fold up the washing. That has to be something light though, or at least something without an involved plotline...

Thanks, Cloggie! I don't know how you early birds do it - like when I have to leave for the airport at 5 a.m. for a flight, it kills me. But enjoying a K-drama over breakfast is a delightful image (I don't eat breakfast, either). Life from the other side of the clock!

Exactly what I wrote in my comment. @cloggie, welcome to my early birds' club. And @owl22, breakfast is the most important meal of the day!!!😉
But I understand... sometimes I do intermittent fasting and then I don't feel hungry during the morning.
Anyways... Greetings to the both of you.

If I have a flight early in the morning, I just don't sleep. I once marathoned through season 2 of stranger things with a friend and then left at 4am to catch a flight.

I crash hard after I land though. 😅

How do you multitask during dramas?? Teach me! If I look away to match one pair of socks or check one email, I miss the subtitles and then have to rewind.

Now I only watch dramas under the blanket when putting the kids to bed. Thank goodness they’re not old enough to wonder why mommy is all glowy under her blanket.

Hey totoro,
but it sounds like putting kids to bed and watching dramas is multitasking of the highest order! I definitely pay much more attention to subs than I do the socks!

3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Ah @totoro it's all about choosing the right drama for the right occassion! You know those ones where you feel you want to FF through the annoying MiL scenes? Or where the second lead (or couple) is just SO IRRITATING... Those are perfect for sock-matching duties.

As I only binge-watch one drama at a time I can't choose one while doing one chore. But I do tend to pick long not very exciting saeguks in winter when I'm knitting. It gives me a great balance of paying half attention to each.

2

Required fields are marked *

This is true. Those MiL scenes are perfect for whipping up you lunch for the next day. Vacuuming during LoJ is a lot easier than, say, during What's Wrong with Secretary Kim. I want to keep my eyes on our leads for that! As for FF, I don't think I ever FF the first time through a drama, but I do whenever appropriate the second (or third) time around!

By mastering the art of pause and play! I'm half joking. I multitask a lot too but I pause the drama a lot too. I don't like to miss important info.

I agree, some dramas require much more attention than K-variety or K-reality shows. Radio Star is easy to multi-task to, but I give my (almost) full attention to Seo Kang Joon in Are You Human Too?

If I would have your schedule less than a week, I might die!!! Allow me to bow down in admiration. I can't do that. 😐
Me, by 10:30pm I need to put myself to sleep.
But the advantage is: I wake up at 4:30 or 5am! Yes, I became a morning bird🐦. And since I start working at 9am, I usually can watch one episode of whatever drama I am watching at 6am, fix some food for the day, go to do my morning walks now that the weather is nice, and simply start relatively happy my new day.
I can't afford watching 6 airing shows in the same week... I usually barely do one, two or maybe even three, but just like you, I also feel in good company. So, yes... Dramaland is the only place where night owls and morning birds meet😊.

Morning walks do sound nice, but I get in a late evening walk (last night it was terribly windy but it died down around 9 and I took a walk then). @owl22 All I can say is that you're the most productive kdrama lover I've seen. You must have some superpowers if you're able to work a full time job without being sleep deprived, whilst being a night owl, and then be able to slay multitasking! Like how??? Teach me your ways "Master Ninja Night Owl"! I too want to learn the art of vacuuming the house whilst watching LoJ or cooking/watering the plants whilst relishing Ms.Hammurabi. I'm honestly in awe!

your multitasking is impressive! i used to try to knit (holding needles in line with the subtitles so i could watch both) but had many dropped stitches (tho i learned to fix them with a crochet hook!)... i tried folding (KonMari style) my laundry to ill effect...

so i essentially gave up trying to multitask and now just watch dramas -- WAIT, does eating while watching count??

i am a night owl also, well... more vampire, as you can tell by my timestamp, but... i have to hit "pause" to do little chores here and there... we do what we must do to continue doing what we enjoy....

Doesn't it seem like Koreans could be night owls too? If K-dramas be true, many work very late, go out after work, catch a second round, then hit karaoke, at least in Seoul.

@owl22 I know, right? In kdramas, there is always a whole second life after work. Which is crazy because they work super late and wake up early so where do they find all this time?

Clearly, Koreans can time-bend like jedis.

Thanks, @owl22, for your inspiring and well-written post. You're not only a night owl, you're a wise owl for doing such a good job of not letting your k-drama addiction stop you from getting what you need to done and having a healthy social life. #drama-watchinggoals

I can't do much apart from eat while I watch dramas, but sometimes I use a timer and alternate between x number of minutes for drama-watching, and the same number of minutes for getting stuff done. I don't watch anything while I do household chores, but I do listen to OSTs, audiobooks, or podcasts. *crosses fingers that the DB podcasts will come back to life, too*

Great write-up! I am neither a morning person nor a night owl therefore declare myself a sloth. I am slow at binge watching and after 2.5 years of watching kdramas I am barely about to hit 50 watched kdramas. A "binge" for me usually consists of about 3 eps watched in one 24 hour span :P

Unfortunately being unable to speak Korean, I can't do laundry or anything else while watching and I like to give kdrama episodes my full attention so usually means watching on my phone curled up on the couch or in my bedroom.

I like your sloth category! Very calm, cool, and collected. 3 eps in one 24 hour span is definitely binging for a sloth. :)
I don't speak Korean either, but it dawned on me that the 50 in. TV mounted on my bedroom wall that I bought a year ago especially for streaming K-dramas (since I watched them on my laptop before) is probably a big help in the way of doing other stuff AND watching simultaneously. The subs are big enough to see while doing other mundane but necessary chores.

2
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Haha yes exactly! As a sloth I also have a strict rule that I never start a kdrama episode after 12:00 midnight as me and sleep are inseparable and I always need a good 6-8 hours of solid sleep time.

Nice! All I have is a small tv that I rarely use and when I tried watching kdramas on it, my blind eyes couldn't read the subs very well lol
