Drama viewership ratings for the week of July 8-14, 2019

There’s a lot to unpack for this week’s ratings, so let’s jump right into it. For the Monday-Tuesday time slots, pretty much every drama is performing well except for fantasy rom-com Perfume. Similarly, for the Wednesday-Thursday time slots, everything is performing well except for sci-fi rom-com My Absolute Boyfriend.

Thursday actually saw the finales of Angel’s Last Mission: Love and One Spring Night. The two dramas had been fighting for first place the last few weeks, but it was the latter that ended up coming out on top, achieving its highest rating of 9.5 percent. Still, I’m a bit annoyed that neither of these shows ever reached 10 percent.

Over the weekend, we also had the finales of Nokdu Flower and Different Dreams. It was the latest addition, however, that really caught my attention; the new Hong Sisters drama Hotel del Luna premiered to a whopping 7.3 percent. Its first episode and it’s already surpassed every other cable show currently airing — now that’s impressive.

I'm glad to see yet again Search: WWW reaching a new record with the rating, albeit a bit disappointed that it has to be ep 11 (lame triangle). Ep 12 had my heart though.
Pleasantly surprised with Hotel de Luna's first ep rating. Lee Ji-eun will always have my support, but for the moment I wish Search: WWW could reach over 5 because it so deserves it.

I'm waiting for Watcher to top the 5%. It's more likely that the sunday's episode can reach those numbers.

Different Dreams was burdened all along its run by the controversy about its hero: KWB (he was a a major leader of the independence fight but took North Korea's side after because he was communist) and never was appreciated for its own value.
The competition with Nokdu Flower didn't help either.

DD is good, but Nokdu Flower- It's such great drama. Well done! It's shame that it didn't get better ratings. They did great job on ending (it was hopeful, not all tragic) and I'm so grateful they skipped on (JBJ) torture scene. Kudos to all casts!

I don't dislike Partners in Justice (Investigation Couple) but I am disappointed that Perfume isn't beating them in viewership. I adore Perfume and now that One Spring Night is over, it is the only show I am actually looking forward to every week.

Perfume and Partners in Justice are not in the same timeslot to be considered competition. PIJ has no competitors in its timeslot. Whereas Perfume has variety shows and 1/2 of cable dramas to go against.

I adore Perfume too. I do think the ratings does not do the drama justice. I'm camping on Naver for Perfume updates, even some Kviewers wonder why are the ratings low. Heh. I do think the reduced viewership has something to do with the established variety shows Perfume is going against now.

On a positive note, kviewers who do watch it seem to have only positive words to say. Or positive comments > negative ones. Yay to that!

Disclaimer: this is all based on observation of ratings

SBS
Monday Same Bed Different Dreams: last week's rating 7.9%
Tuesday Flaming Youth: last week's rating 7.7%
Both SBDF and FY are buzzworthy variety shows. I watched SBDF before, it's like WGM but it involves married celebrities doing daily stuff. Some couples are more entertaining than the others.

MBC
Mondays Straight: Last week's rating 3.4%
Sample of stuff covered by the show: https://www.soompi.com/article/1334407wpp/mbcs-straight-reports-new-details-about-yang-hyun-suks-involvement-in-prostitution-mediation

I saw the first episode of Hotel Del Luna. The production values were very good. But it seems the story and premise will borrow heavily from Miyazaki work's, especially "Spirited Away" and "Howl's Moving Castle." IU was stunning and stylish.
