Drama viewership ratings for the week of June 8-14, 2020

I think I’m ready for the next batch of dramas — what about you? After the high that was A Couple’s World, ratings just seem downright sad these days. Even quarantine wasn’t enough to up the ratings. It almost seems irrelevant when so much of drama viewing is online, but it’s still an important factor with the dramas’ performance.

That said, I cringe at the fact that reincarnation drama Born Again finished its run with a mere 2.4 percent. That and that its competition Sweet Munchies actually fell below the 1 percent mark (ouch). On Friday, The King: Eternal Monarch finished its run with 8.1 percent, which… is okay. It’s certainly not what I was expecting for a finale, much less a Kim Eun-sook finale.

On the bright side, When My Love Blooms finished with a decent number, having always maintained relatively high ratings. So there’s that. Hopefully, this timeslot continues its luck with the premiere of Kim Soo-hyun and Seo Ye-ji’s drama next week.

The King: Eternal Monarch's ratings are not okay at all:

- Second lowest average rating (7.7%) in that time slot ever since SBS introduced it for prime-time dramas (only drama lower was Nokdu Flower at 6.6%)
- Lowest average rating of all prime-time dramas SBS aired for the first half of 2020 (unless almost all of Good Casting's viewers somehow abandon it in its finale week)

It's probably a rather painful experience for the writer Kim Eun Sook herself who used to seeing double digit ratings on her shows: this show was in fact the very first time on a terrestrial channel she had ever seen a single digit rating (and her cable shows only saw them mostly during their premiere weeks).

A sign that she needs to stop using the same old actors and scripts.

2020 is a really bad year for KES. She needs to dump her old cringy lines and come up with something fit for viewing in this generation.
On the other hand Park Ji Eun ' s career is on sky high. Knetz were saying she will soon dethrone KES in terms of string of hit dramas. Park Ji Eun doesn't have a single drama averaging in single digit till now unlike KES. However she too shouldn't become lazy and overconfident unless she wants to end up like KES one day.
Before I get attacked by fans that King is doing good on Netflix,I would like to clarify that my p.o.v was from local audience who are much more familiar with kdramas than rest of the world. What is new to us may be stale and repititive for them. After all kdramas are primarily meant for k-audience and it is evident from the ppl which are all in korean. Hence ratings do matter for advertisement and the broadcasting channel..
Heck even Vagabond which was mocked a lot by those including The King fans managed to get higher average rating than this.

I will not comment on KES' part as I did not watch TKEM, but I do feel Park Ji-eun's dramas were overrated.... the scriptwriter tends to stuff the juicy materials in the first few episodes and drag these plotlines till they got staled in the end. Queen of Housewives, My Love from the Star, Crash Landing on You.... they all showed the same pattern of story fatigue.

I was only comparing the success of their dramas and not their qualities. There are lot more talented screenwriters than these two but they have not succeeded as much as KES or PJE in terms of ratings or popularity. That's it.
Overrated or not Koreans seemed to enjoy them and provided high ratings. But this was not the case with TKEM.

The rating speaks for itself. TKEM is really crappy. The lackluster writing, mediocre directing and editing and even the unconvincing acting resulted in the poor ratings.

----- a response to the King: Eternal Monarch fans who keep boasting about this drama to console themselves, blame others and probably trying to justify the sunk cost fallacy by blaming other for it's bad rating, heavy plot criticism and so on

- oh yeah The King is "popular" on NETFLIX, then what?
it still a crappy drama, the heirs is popular, it still a crappy drama.

- I am actually fond of LMH, doesn't have any scandal, seems like a good guy and KGE is alright. But stop with all the victim mentality, no one is mocking KGE beauty, just because someone didn't call her drop-dead gorgeous didn't mean they call her ugly. Also what you see is comment is social media comment, from antis, the general audience is fine with her. She gets endorsement, she has a positive public image and actually called beautiful. The comment you see isn't representative of how she actually perceive, therefore stop the victim mentality of "they think she is ugly and hates him so they don't watch the drama". NO! it just a crappy drama.

- If you like the drama, it's fine, it's not a sin to like and enjoy crappy drama but don't pretend like it has "worldbuilding with 200 IQ" because it just a crappy drama

- just because you wrote an essay about how the symbolism work, it doesn't mean it's true if the drama never confirmed it. See, the drama just put it for "aesthetic" and to look "deep" without a payoff, it's like Shin Jae. Is it entertaining to watch? yes, does it have meaning, NO!

- Accept the no one is hating the dama for hating purposes or to see its downfall, it already falls flat from rating in the SK and trending in the country that doesn't use NETFLIX as their primary streaming service, it's like how kpop idols boast iTunes chart on places that the primary user doesn't use iTunes. I just search that in SEA country, you need to use VPN just to open NETFLIX because they prioritised their own streaming platform, see how the reception isn't as big as let say, Goblin?

- Just because you have dozen of comments doesn't mean that people "enjoy", yeah it's for you Reddit user specifically. It just the same fans repeating the same things while forgetting that 80% of all drama watchers had dropped the drama, it's the equivalent of Kpop idol spamming twitter to clear up the search. You said people hate it for no reason, where exactly? Most people had left, look at the rating, only people who had hopes remains and yet DB and many blogs, even the Koala one had legit criticism because "surprise, surprise, it's a crappy drama"

- now you'd ask why would you attack me just because I enjoy it? because in general drama forum, so many users who keeps replying to each other can't fathom that the drama is bad and keep throwing the blam to other user and mocked their lack of IQ, you think no one see that?

- They gain followers on Instagram, so what? LMH has a fandom, KGE also still has fans from Goblin, that's how it gets...

- They gain followers on Instagram, so what? LMH has a fandom, KGE also still has fans from Goblin, that's how it gets popular, like Kpop fandom, the actor with fandom does better because they have fandom who will retweet even if they don't like it, it doesn't mean it's a good drama.

- You've seen the nonsense final, no conclusion and stupid fight, bad worldbuilding and all the magic that conjure out of "the hero knows better and we haven't told you all the secret"

sigh, you may not read but I am fine with people enjoying it, I am not fine with people saying the criticism is hate because plot-wise, it has no consistency, bad pacing, bad directing, sub-par to okay acting and hardly believable moments.

Look at Shin Jae and think again about those theories you think as mighty, it's your rose colour glass, the drama doesn't make sense and if you like it, go ahead, just accept the criticism cause you aren't the only one who has logic, critical thinking and functional brain!

I loved this. SJ was such a let down. And all of that makes me feel probably the whole show didn't have much to it either, it's just the viewers who deciphered a lot from what little was given.

People have been...really intense about TK:EM on both sides, it’s been interesting to see. I acknowledge it’s numerous glaring flaws but still really enjoyed it as a whole and no I’m not a huge LMH, KGE or KES fan.

I understand why people thought it was awful and why others loved it. At the end of the day, it was a flop in Korea but quite popular overseas, it was not objectively a good quality drama but it was entertaining for many. Let’s just accept that these two things can exist and be true at the same time and just accept that someone feels the exact opposite of the way you feel about the drama and just as fervently, it’s like people on both sides feel they have to be defensive or justify their opinions in sometimes insulting ways. It’s just not that serious.

I actually like that there are sites where people who didn’t like the drama feel free to discuss what they didn’t care for and other sites where fans of the drama where able to talk about it with people that liked it. There is no reason to call these spaces out if it was people gathering to air their opinions of the drama, now if people there are insulting fans or naysayers of the drama that’s a different story. Anyway just my 2 cents.

At the on the day, all the big names in the drama got their paychecks and will be ok, it sucks to have a big flop but their careers will be fine overall. You try to learn from your mistakes and move and I hope this was also an eye opener for the industry. I’m hoping the lesser known actors who were able to shine here get more opportunities from their exposure in this drama.

You are in DB man, there are places when you can't say bad things about this drama, especially places when you can get downvoted.

The criticism may not seems like unheard but the downvote is louder than that to show that the fans can't take a single criticism, even when they say they did.

DB has many users who used to comment about drama, different demographic than the fans
The user above probably comes from that forum. I have seen how the "other people just don't get the brilliant of TKEM, they are lazy to use their brain" post too many times on Twitter. I haven't seen drama fans behave that way before this drama aired.

I do not understand the low ratings for OH MY BABY or MYSTIC POP UP BAR. They are both good shows. Actually MYSTIC POP UP BAR is not doing that badly for a cable show.

ONCE AGAIN is doing well- as it should be. It has been a while since I enjoyed a weekender that much.

Even Jung So-min cannot rescue SOUL REPAIRER. Lesson: Get a real Psychologist as a technical advisor before you write a show like that.

I am surprised that the KBS censors allowed Soul Repairer to be broadcast. From what I have seen, the show romanticizes and supports blatant ethical violations of romantic relationship between doctor and patient. Definitely a violation of the Korean psychologist code of ethics. I don't know if it also violates Korean criminal law or medical licensing regulations, but in many western jurisdictions would also be a legal/criminal violation. Also exposes the hospital to malpractice claims and the various supervisory doctors to licensing discipline for not reporting violations to licensing authorities. I stopped watching, so maybe in later episodes the writer throws the book at the psychiatrist for all his ethical violations and he loses his license or goes to jail. That would be the only saving grace.

I don't know why but this year almost nothing is rating. There are some big exceptions - World of the Married for example - but overall ratings are down. I find the dramas this year quite generic and few have something original to say. Maybe with everything going on in the world people simply aren't interested in what the standard kdrama is selling? That's just a guess though, but I imagine production houses are out there trying to work out why.

I am still waiting for Netflix to bring me WORLD OF THE MARRIED. I know that JTBC has a standing relationship with Netflix so I am a little bit miffed by them. Of course I knew Netflix was less than perfect before I signed up so should not be surprised, but it is still frustrating. I would prefer not to watch it on a less than legal site- so I am simply waiting.

I think that you may be right about kdrama people maybe having been thrown for a loop. As were we all.

i've been submitting alot of J dramas, personally, but have also been submitting K dramas that are on my FAV list...

they just need to be told by us loyal kdrama watchers for them to realize which dramas they should choose to post. i've seen some kdramas listed on netflix that have me saying "REALLY? must've been CHEAP to purchase rights to air..."

netflix subscribers should submit our suggestions, cuz think about it... exactly WHO is researching which dramas to purchase rights for to post on netflix....

not experienced viewers like us, right?

I imagine they're forced to take some less popular dramas in exchange for distribution rights of the better ones. That's the only reason I can think of for why they've just added Lovely Horribly and Angel's Last Mission today.

3

I should do this for j dramas too but I guess they won't be able to get their hands on it either. Since j dramas have always been this way, hardly a few make it to netflix or viki otherwise all others are thankfully fan subbed by some very kind fans. It angers me because well, there are some very good quality dramas and fan subs don't get paid but the industry has deliberately caused hurdles in their product being available to a larfer audience. I wonder if like China they are trying to make their own apps? But there is none as of yet so I don't understand their reasosn for not making their shows available legally.

2

Unfortunately Jdramas are much more expensive than Kdramas from what I have heard.... I understand why international streaming services are not too eager to buy them. I don't feel Jdrama is actively trying to draw in international audience either.... maybe its domestic market is large enough so the JP channels simply don't bother.

Of all the current shows I am only watching Mystic Popup Bar. "Sort of" watching a couple others, with a lot of fast forwarding just to get to the end. Overall this season has been pretty much Bleh and Meh. Married being just about the only real exception. So much warmed over cliches and formula shows - I wonder if the real writers are on strike, or the networks are saving their better shows for the new season.

I do see some new ones that might be better - looking forward to Flower of Evil, The Good Detective, She Knows Everything, Graceful Friends, Into The Ring.. Hmm well, just about all but 2 of the upcoming dramas - Was It Love and Backstreet Rookie.

Angel's Last Mission had one of the extraordinary acting performances of last year so at least there's something to recommend it. I've almost been tempted to watch it again just to see Shin Hye Sun's transcendent performance.

Lovely Horribly was universally panned and the male lead is a rapist so that one is a mystery.

Shin Hye-sun is my very favorite actress and her luminous performance in ANGEL'S LAST MISSION shows why I admire her so much: The script was deeply flawed logically and in the hands of a lesser actress the drama would have been terrible- yet it was one of my favorite shows last year precisely because Shin Hye-sun took that flawed material and made something wonderful out of it.

@oldawyer
If you think about the SK audiences the ratings for each are no surprise.

Sure OMB may have a target segment but no real audience overlap. Actually it may be be problematic for many groups and in a stay at home moment that will hit it hard. Still to early to see from the data but if SK is having a CV inspired increase in home and conservativeness then OMB will not find a happy home.

Firstly, TKEM ended with 8%. That's kinda decent considering it's overall lackluster ratings. I hope everyone involved will move on to better and more critically acclaimed projects. I know KGE will be in Hero, a musical movie next wohooo 🥳.

My opinion about TKEM and the fandom it has...

I do think having a huge fandom affects the overall viewing experience and it has a 2 way effect on this drama. Since with big fandoms, comes many non-fans too. So the clash of opinions is very obvious. For a non fan it's criticism, but to fans it's an attack to their actor/tress and their drama, and they in turn become defensive, defensive enough to retort and respond. I don't agree that criticsm equates to hate, though I do think some comments can go overboard.

Imo, TKEM recap comments was mild and got more fun as the show progressed, as many that have clashes in the beginning either discussed somewhere else (that shares the same opinon good or bad) or dropped the drama. Towards the end, the same group of viewers were commenting in the recaps to discuss stuff.

In some sense I do see why fans are trying hard to make it a successful drama, they want it to be successful because they don't want anything bad happening to their favourites. Imo...that's a natural thought process, who wants anything to go bad? What is unnatural is the toxicity it also brings. Saying things like the drama is only for high IQ watchers....mmm...I enjoyed the drama by not overthinking about anything. Watching it with an empty mind, just following whatever is shown works for me and it definitely didn't require much IQ. I don't even know why the euler number is needed. All that talk about math...but actually drama can just forget all that math amd go full fantasy. Also...I feel quite smug that some of my early assumptions came to life in ep 16. Muahahaha 😎

Anyways...at the end of the day, actors/actresses with big fandoms will always get bigger roles compared to more talented but less popular actors/actresses. Which is a sad reality...I feel for my faves who are mostly supporting actors. I will support them more 💪🏻😤.

The movie is said be Korea's first musical movie 😆. I lowkey wanted SSR to be cast as lead since he was one of the original cast of the musical 🤭. Anyways...seems like they are not following the history or musical to a tee though, since I read KGE's character is fictional.

I love Kim Go-eun and enjoyed her films a lot before she even step foot in dramaland.
After 3 dramas I still prefer KGE the film actress so I'm looking forward to HERO and film makers I'm familiar with.
I'm kind of a hopeless sentimental when it comes to historical films so I'll probably enjoy it.

This is quite the opposite with Lee Joon-ik's "King and the Clown." I love love love it but I always wonder how it would fair as a musical film.
I think Oh Man-seok was the original Gong Gil.

i guess i'm in the group that enjoyed the drama for the actors and the fluffy story -- i was bothered by the overindulgent PPLs and the accompanying inserted dialog -- but with all that is happening globally, and maybe especially in the US... i took this escapism as a welcome diversion from my 24/7 news watch on the coronavirus and political/social injustice happenings in my country....

Ohhh...I enjoy TKEM too. I'm not a fan of any of the cast nor am I emotionally attached to any of the characters but it was fun to watch. I liked the PPL. I wasn't bothered by it. Imo, all dramas have overindulgent PPL, I just think King's PPL was criticized so much because viewers had issues with the plot and the PPL was collateral damage. Other dramas have in your face PPL too, but no one says anything about them or does it become a major topic of discussion. Heh

Anyways...TKEM Ep 16 2nd half was the fluffiest of all eps. I kinda wished the whole drama was like that...travelling in between worlds, just for fun and meeting various versions of themselves. I want to see tyrant Gon! Imagine tyrant Gon meeting drunk actress Taeul, that would be a sight to behold 🤣

Regarding the rating for The king. Wanted to ad that last year SBS, KBS and MBC got together to start streaming sites Wavve for domestic audience. This maybe have taken some of the on air audience since most teens and young watched this drama, as They would for the most part watch online. Wavve have more subscriber than Netflix Korea.

Thank you for that information. So that must mean that KOCOWA is for the foreign audiences?

In any case, give that so many people have taken to watching shows on hand held devices that could be a partial explanation. However, this would tend to skew the numbers for JTBC and TVN upwards unless they too have easily accessible steaming sites the would also drain off viewers.

The key difficulties that ratings services and advertisers have with streaming sites is that it changes the timing of when a show is watched AND in many cases allows adds to be eliminated. Both of these things are great for the consumer but they change the economics of broadcasting. The timing part renders the ratings suspect. The eliminate adds part makes them less useful.

The King: Eternal Monarch had soo much potential but unfortunately could not decide what to do with itself. Hard to believe a writer of KES standard would make such elementary mistakes plot wise. Although I am SAHM, the only drama that I managed to follow is Mystic PopUp Bar. So many dramas that are on-hold (basically not enough time to watch or even pique my interest to continue 🙈).

So glad that Netflix bring on My Mister, definitely will rerun once I have time 😆. Still looking at potential next drama to pick when MPUB ended (😭😭😭 next week is so soon but yet so far for finale).
