Oh look, piggybacking off my own comment! (jk, not really!)

But since I am here, I thought I'd tell you guys about a really excellent episode we just produced for the podcast about the recent school bullying scandals, the reality of school life in Korea, and how to deal with it as fans when our faves fail us. If you want to check it out, you can find it here.

We were joined Professor CedarBough Saeji, who you may know as 'The Kpop Prof', and she had a LOT of insider insight to share, and covered the topic with a lot of breadth and depth. If you have an hour, do listen!

Hello beanies! The sun is shining on this fine Friday, particularly appreciated as most of this week was grey, cold and rainy. Last night I was feeling particularly frustrated and defeated by how the country where I live is handling the pandemic and the vaccine rollout. But this morning I woke up and finished reading the latest story thread on the Humans of New York page. I was so moved by it, and when I clicked the link to donate to the cause, I tell you - my faith in humanity skyrocketed. The kind words and giving of strangers to help other strangers reminded me that many small actions can add up to some really big good. There was a pep in my step on my walk today, and I was smiling at literally everyone - I know they couldn't see it because of my mask, but I hope they felt it.

Also, I made japchae for the first time last night, and it turned out fairly decently. I'll do better next time, but it was delicious enough for a first try.

There is much positivity in your comment CBme! I felt like I could feel someone's smile even under their mask.. so keep spreading all the positivity. Our world is in need of that. A lot.

Japchae is a dish I haven't thought of trying.. I'm happy that it turned out well though. It sounds very healthy?

Great point @sukstan. RUN ON’s Ki Seon-gyeom may be my favorite kdrama character so far in 2021. Siwan nailed it 100 percent. He was very upfront about his likes and dislikes.
Since the door has been opened for food, in the last episode (I think and am too lazy to rewatch) the gang is talking about where to go to eat and Seon-gyeom overrules what was recommended by saying that he wanted Gamja-tang (pork bone soup). For a moment I thought did SG just give a plug for the upcoming romantic drama DAL RI AND GAMJATANG? Then I realized It couldn’t be since DAL RI is from KBS and RUN ON is from JTBC.

HI Beanies! It's Match Day! "What is that?" you may ask. It's the day where US 4th year medical students determine which training programs they have been accepted for the next 3-? years of their lives, getting the on-hands learning and experience they will need to become certified medical doctors. Every country does this a little differently. This is a hugely anticipated day and I've wished a couple students who asked me for advice and recommendation letters good luck today. They have already found out that they will be training somewhere, but today, they find out where. Those that didn't match have also been told earlier this week so that they can call those training programs that maybe didn't fill all their available spots for a place (very stressful, indeed). Anyway, it's an exciting day all around.

But more exciting for me is that my kids are at their aunt's and I have a weekend to myself (and my hubby, of course). She's had her 1st set of COVID19 vaccines as her husband. Much of our families have had it now. I do have an aunt on the east coast that refuses to get vaccinated and telling that side of the family not to get one (funny and unfortunate because she has 2 sons who are or will be in the medical field). You can only teach those who want to learn, I've found. I did have a patient tell me this week that I saved her and her 90 some year old's mother's life this year since neither of them have had COVID19 and both have now gotten both doses of the COVID19 vaccine and feel so relieved. She headed my advice.

I've also been using the piano as a stress reliever (from the atrocious River episodes 7-8) and composed a few songs this past weekend and week. They're on my wall if you're interested. And now River episodes 9-10 were the cutest and I'm totally on board the On-dal/Ga-jin ship with this past week! I'm super impressed with Na In-woo now. Shooting two dramas at the same time and stepping into this one a third of the way through. Truly amazing. And the steam emanating from the screen with the Silla herbalist and General Go is ... hot. That's all.

And Hello? It's Me! continues to delight! Kim Young Kwang is the most adorable. The relationship between Chairman and Chaebol is perfect. I can't predict what will happen to young Ha-ni, and that's ok, I love the story so far and I'm loving everyone in it--except the scheming aunt, but there's always the villain.

Sisyphus, dear, sweet, Sisyphus. It's my no thought, no brain power show. Just enjoying the ride. I do like Park Shin Hye in this. She's very convincing.

And Rebel Princess is on hold as I continue through Money Flower. Jang Hyuk, mad respect.

Conversation with the husband about height differences:

Me: *Prattling on about the new On-dal and the size/height difference between him and Kim So Hyun.* "OMG, it's so adorable..."

Me: You know who else has an adorable height difference?

Hubby: You and...

15
27
reply

Required fields are marked *

...me?

Me: Yeah! You're 6 ft 2 in and I'm 5 ft 4 and 3/4 in.

Hubby: You know, all those actors lie about their height, right? Everyone exaggerates. I'm really 6 ft 1in according to your clinic measuring stick.

Me: What??? *New revelation after 19 years of marriage.

Hubby: He's probably not 6 ft 2 in either. And she's probably not her stated height.

Me: Well, whatever they are, they're still cute together.

Moral of the story: The things you learn after 2 decades of knowing someone.

Second Moral: Seriously, just watch episodes 9-10 of River, you won't regret it.

Third Moral: Good luck to everyone today, whatever you need it for!

Heightist, ahem.

1

People get so edgy about tall people though! I hate it when we are sitting in seats at a show or something and the person behind starts complaining loudly and endlessly that my husband is too tall (he’s 6’4 so is very tall) - what can he do? He’s not able to make himself any shorter. (Ahem I may be quite sensitive about this - I am only 5’1 so I get that it’s annoying when tall people are in front of you but they’re not being tall on purpose to ruin your fun. You don’t need to go on and on about it and ruin their enjoyment too).

I know, right? My husband sometimes has to contend with being “too tall,” mostly outside the US though.

Once, when we were in SE Asia, we were out shopping, and the floor sales clerk in this famous department store sheepishly told him, “oh, I don’t think we have anything for someone your height.” It was funny but also a bit sad, lol.

1

@hcatfan at least they’re easy to find in a crowd

2

My husband actually is very cognizant of this and will find other tall people to sit in front or behind. But then I can’t see. 😂

3

@ally-le oh same, we always will seat ourselves to be as little inconvenience as possible but there’s a limit to how much you can do. You can’t always get seats in the back row. Sometimes you just have to make the best of things. (I have a specific occasion in mind where we went to a show and the woman behind us just kept complaining loudly - while the show was going - but she wouldn’t accept a cushion or an offer to swap seats from her neighbour and it just ruined everyone’s evening and put my husband off going to shows for ages).

2

I Matched!!!!!!! Today I find out where I'm going and cannot stop grinning. It is a day I thought would never come. It is only possible bc of the support from my entire "village" (Family, friends, mentors, professors). kdramas get a special shout out bc they were my escape hatch whenever things were bad, when I felt overwhelmed and when I needed an outlet.

I'm keeping up with the foolish routine of food only once a day for past 35 months and from 1st April onwards gonna move ahead from it. Too detrimental for the health, especially in present environment. I used to be so busy that slowly-slowly it became a habit to not eat 20+ hours and then it became a rule and then i started fervently follow it.
There were times i was almost done for and yet i didn't broke the rules. Going extreme is not beneficial for anyone.
Time to move on as said at the start of 2021.

From 2021 onwards gonna spend some money on politicians + political parties too. Our aim is to create the 3rd and 4th alternative and if it happens then big boost for us.
Being a representatives comes with lots and lots of responsibilities and as usual most politicians hardly fulfill any responsibility and run away from any accountability.
I don't wish to contest in elections - better is to have much control from behind. I like this style.
Even if i contest election the best thing to come out of my mouth gonna be criticism of populace and civil society. opposing them, deriding their actions and then expect them to vote for you - it can be quite good achievement and all this can when customer aka voter thinks of you an honest person. You need to attack the traits and you can get the voter your way.
Politics has all the legal ways to multifold your wealth within few years. Returns are too good. tax benefits too and many other paths open.

Korean box office hit a record low in February. Major theater chains are scrambling to find new ways to survive pandemic restrictions and loss of audience. Megabox, a large chain, is seeking help from industrial start-up companies to propose new ways to revive their business model.

In the US, a few theaters tried to "rent" out screens to private parties or showings. Pre-pandemic, a few companies would rent out screens to show foreign distribution films. This is how I saw many Studio Ghibli films. But movie house private rentals do not drive business, when much of it has moved onto conglomerate streaming services.

I suppose some theater chains could "stage" small concerts, theater productions or other "live events," but there are already other venues doing the same thing. Besides, the development of music acts live streaming concerts globally has been hugely profitable. People are now conditioned to react and interact on an internet screen. The promise of vaccine immunity and a return to normalcy is still a long way off.

And much of the movie industry talent is aware their motion picture industry is in a long hiatus. Many Korean film actors are returning to TV shows and streaming content webtoon distributors.

Hi beanies, how are you all dying. 2020 really messed up with my study pattern so I am now making schedules and stuff to get back into the habit of studying regularly. Also I am trying to look for online courses on Coursera and Udemy so that I can improve myself and have something to show on my resume. Coursera certificates are a bit expensive in my country but Udemy is offering considerable discounts so I might opt for those. Also taking up new things made me realise how much pressure my generation has put on itself to be perfect at what we do. I feel like a lot of it is due to social media and the desire to have a "glow-up" and succeed at your hobbies. On the other hand, the good thing that came to me from social was sex-ed from certified professionals ( the Indian education system miserably fails its students at providing it), some really good and funny content creators and the increased awareness about mental health and various forms of emotional abuse that women might face . I have uninstalled Instagram from my phone for a while but I might get back to it once I feel like it. Also a side note to all parent beanies, please tell your children that you love them, it really boosts your confidence, knowing that you are loved by your parents. I saw this because I come from a culture where parents don't explicitly say that to their children and while I know my parents love me, there are times when I seriously doubt their feelings because they have never said the three words to me. It was like on 18 Again, Dae Young loved his children but after a certain point, his children didn't feel loved by him. All i am saying that even though you may not be a very expressive person, just say those words to your kids once in a while

Good advice to parents. Kids are under so much pressure to perform well these days. Especially in light of decreased job opportunities during the pandemic (and even prior), being the best will perhaps give you an edge for those jobs. I think parents really need to allow their children to figure out what makes them tick and foster those opportunities to excel in things they like and are talented at doing. Happiness is more than making money. You just need to do something that will put a roof over your head and food on the table. The rest is extra. You just need to be happy doing it and so the extra work it takes forever you to do it well isn’t burdensome. And yes, I tell me kids I love them every day before they go to sleep. I was never told that either. Now, my parents finally tell me they are proud of me. I knew they were, but if took them 30 years to admit it.

I agree millenials and gen Z are under a lot of pressure. A lot of it is because of social media.
I see kids younger than me doing way better, exploring 3 to 4 things at a time, earning through social media and it adds the pressure that maybe all of this is doable but I'm not doing it so I'm sth wrong even if it's sth I don't really want in life. Everything is perfect and even people older and employers expect perfection and multi taskers now. I feel this will lead to early burnout for most people but maybe it is a sign of the society, expectation and lifestyle changing and eventually all of this will become normal? I know atleast I won't be able to keep up.

3
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

It's actually leading to burnout amongst even youngsters. A lot of people that I know barely post much now. Some have even started taking scheduled breaks from social media. I agree with you about things seeming doable because everyone seems to be doing it but I honestly believe that some positive change is underway. A lot of influencers are showing their faces without filters once in a while to remind their followers that things are not what they seem on social media and even though it's not much, it's still something

1
2

Required fields are marked *

I’m so grateful I grew up before social media was a thing. I’m hoping by the time my children are older enough to be using it (which is not that far away) people will have come to realise that it’s better to be super low key on social media...I can’t see it going away unfortunately. One of the things I really hate is when old posts resurface years later and the person now is held responsible as if there’s no possibility people (and what is deemed acceptable by society) grow and change over time.

I wonder why is a short nap during work not a norm? I get extremely sleepy after lunch and it's impossible to work thay actively. Idk if this applies everywhere in China but on a short educational trip to China, I found out that the university has 2 hours long break and the university professors make sure to take a nap during that time. I think that was a really smart habit. A short nap after lunch can energize you and give you if atleast not the same but good enough freshness as that you have in the morning.

Hello, Beanies! I hope you’re all well. It’s been a sad and frustrating week here in the US, particularly for those of us who are immigrants/minorities. I have no answer, and too many questions and too much exhausted outrage to muster much more than the usual platitudes to describe our situation.

On the plus side, I got my first Covid vaccine jab this week, and my spouse is already fully vaccinated. After a 18-mo. break, my kid gets to see his extended family this weekend. It’s a small joy, I know, but it feels big to us.

On the drama end of things, I’m still watching Vincenzo, but not loving it quite as much as I did early on. Also, I just started Hello, Me!. It’s kinda bananas and I love it.

Hello all:
Winter is still holding on. I am not happy about this. But, eh...what to do. We have crappy winter weather but on the whole we don't suffer horrible weather calamities as other regions do so i will shut up and be grateful.

Well, i'll just get this off my chest here. I dropped two dramas i was having fun watching. Sword and Brocade, a cdrama. It was fun. It wasn't particularly well-written but it sustained my interest. But i simply could not stand the way the main male lead treated his concubines. I understand that he's all tsundere and all but something both feminist and romantic rose up within me and i had to let it go when the decent second lead popped up and i fell in love with him but knew he hadn't a snowball's chance in hell to get the girl.

The other drama i dropped was MOUSE. Oh my gosh, the best serial killer drama of the season. So well thought out, so twisty with nary a gaff (okay, i will let the plot point about the girl getting to the cathedral before the cops go. Because...well...the drama is perfection.) But then the end of episode 6 came and yep i had to drop the entire drama. Some wimpy non-nihilistic thing in me cried out, "NO! I will not allow this!" And seeing the drama is already done and was never in my hands to allow or disallow, well... i had to step aside and put my attention elsewhere. I'm hoping it will have a happy ending. So i will be reading recaps but i just can't continue watching.

Now to dramas i am loving:

Hello Me. It is solid, standard, perfect run of the mill rom com. A sweet breath of fresh hair and just goodies all around.

Times: another solid entry with twists and turns and dratted cellphones that affect the future and the past. Unlike Mouse which is like a twisty and breath-catching passionate but scary hottie, Times is like Seo Jinnie -- Trustworthy, determined, normal but worthy of our trust and inclined to suddenly surprise us when we are ready to just complain and look around for someone more exciting.

At this point, the three best dramas online are Times, Hello Me, and Mouse. I started Beyond Evil but that town, guys! That town!

Have a great weekend, all.

@CarolemcDonnell I agree with you about Mouse. Up until the end of ep 6 I was loving the drama. By the looks of what I saw then, that is not the direction I want to go so I will also stop. I'll still read recaps but I don't want to watch anymore.

Maybe we are jumping to conclusions...maybe it'll be about him battling the temptation. But still.... it was devastating to me. Too dark, if it goes where i fear it's going.

Re MOUSE (Spoilers):
I have been afraid that Ba-reum is the other genius murderer that was referred to fairly early on--perhaps even before we learned there was someone else alive with the psychopath gene. There have been clues throughout, and in a drama that is as well-written as this, this someone else is almost certainly a fairly prominent character. In each ep, I'd say, "please, no, let him be the sweet, caring person he seems to be." And there would be a moment in which I'd just hold my breath, but then it seemed to be ok, so I'd relax again. One such moment, seeing them stare at each other outside his house. but then seeing he was being beaten by Yo-han on the roof, I began to relax a bit. And seeing him in the hospital, I breathed again. For about 30 seconds.

I don't know how the screenwriter can change matters now...that we saw at the end. Ah me!~

Unless someone is have a dream (nightmare) then I don't see any way around it. I saw what I saw and there are no excuses. And my hope fizzles out like sand in an hourglass.... gone.

Re: Sword and Brocade.

Oddly, I had the opposite reaction. I thought that Xu Ling Yi treated Shi Yi well once he got over his initial suspicion of her. It was Shi Yi who was driving me crazy with her dodging around behind his back (i.e., investigating her mother's death and teaching embroidery) and her little and not-so-little lies. She seems to like Xu Ling Yi so, come on, Shi Yi, communicate! Use your words!

Shi Yi is the main wife. It's the whole concubine disrespect, i'm not here for. Being a suspect in murdering her mom? he should be looked at suspiciously. Neither he nor she is aware that he's the female lead.

Yes, judging by the Chinese dramas I've seen, concubines must have had it rough, having to compete against each other and the official wife to claw their way into some semblence of security. It seems like the only way they could do so was by constantly fawning over the husband and wife and by giving birth to a boy.

Having said that, I am embarrassed to admit that I enjoy watching the women scheme against each other (i.e., The Story of Yanxi Palace), especially when they outwit their so-called master.

I love the scheming too. All the concubine stories require us accepting that a man has all these women who cannot accept him and whom he can never quite bring himself to love ...because he is that wonderful and picky. it irks the feminist in me. Give me a polyamory reverse harem anime to set this right.

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!😀

You know what is better than a day off? A SPONTANEOUS day off!😊
Okay, it was a study day, but extra sleep!🥳 My workload dwindled down for a bit and to savour the calm before the storm I decided Wednesday morning to take leave on Thursday to catch up a bit on my formation studies.

Of course today all hell broke loose at my return this morning, and I was swiftly informed of all the brand new cases and job tasks that I need to perform from next week onwards, on top of my formation.
I guess that day off was a wise decision in the end!😉

One of my main problems with the drama Oh My Baby was that the drama never showed the FL exploring other options to motherhood. She was fixated on biologically becoming a mother through pregnancy. She had a throw away line about not wanting to look at adoption until it was a choice and not a last resort which would have landed more (with me) if they showed her seriously considering adoption before coming to thwt conclusion.
I feel like maybe I was a little hard on the FL.
But then again. Maybe I wasnt.
Today I had to make that decision. To have the surgery that will make me unable to ever carry my own child or to continue suffering unbearable pain every month. I choose surgery. Someone is going to call me next week to set it up. And getting pregnant will no longer be an option for me.
I made the decision. I smiled at the doctor through my mask and felt a kernel of relief bloom through me. I dont have to think about it anymore! The decision is made! Its for the best!
And then the thought hit me like a TOD: I think I would have been a good mom. I made it to my car and sobbed. I drove to Burger King (my bad day meal) and sobbed the entire way. I kept thinking to myself: I think I would have been a good mom. I parked in front of hobby lobby amd gorged myself on a burger and fries and an oreo shake while listening to Obamas book, texting with two of my friends and sobbing.
I eventually stopped crying and wandered through the aislea of hobby lobby looking at their cheesy wooden pallets with bible verses. I bought two (I cant help it. I love them). And as I wandered back to my car I had a few new thoughts:
1. Theres more than one way to become a mom. I may not be able to grow a kid in my own body but...Ive never been good at growing things ANYWAY! And I hear labour is like--stupid painful. There are other options. My body may not be able to take a pregnancy all the way through but that doesnt mean Ill never be a mom.
2. Barack and Michelle Obama are the freaking BEST. Not even talking about their politics. Just them as human beings roaming this earth they are THE BEST. One of my favorite parts of Michelles book is the fact that she knows EXACTLY how much shes worth. One of my favorite parts of his (so far) is that there was a time that he was this skinny, earnest, guy who was a little bit shy and he decided to change that about himself and so he did. Ive always been lacking in will power but I can change myself, cant I? Just a little? Sure I can! Im not trying to change myself into President Isthatacorner. Just...a happy isa.
So...today was a pill. It was an entire piece of work. But. Ive opened the shades to let the sunshine in. Theres ACTUAL SUNSHINE outside! And at least for right now, Im done with tears.
And I still think that drama sucked.

As an adopted child myself, I thought it was weird that the option of adoption wasn't more explored in Oh My Baby. She found someone she loved a lot and who loved her but had fertility issues too, so why put their relationship at risk if there are other solutions.

I wish you the best for your surgery!

Thanks!
I really didnt like how she treated him when she found out about his fertility issues. Of course he should have been mkre open from the outset, but that doesnt excuse her!

Adoption is always an option for parenthood. Our children are in there 20's now, and there's never been a time since they were placed in our arms that we didn't feel fully their parents. Prayers for a successful surgery and for you to become a mother in the future.

I have a vague recollection from that series that adoption was just as strict as invitro. They were never going to give a single 40 year old woman a baby. Or perhaps I had read that in the comments section.

Maybe thats something that is just known in SK? Its strange all the little things that dont get covered in translations because its part of the natural cultural landscape that the drama is made in.

1. Some day you might still find a way to become a mom, and you will be a wonderful one. But you know, even if that doesn't happen, taking care of you and your health is very very very important, and I'm happy that you have made this decision for yourself. Also, in your job you have touched the lives of many children and made a huge impact on their lives whether you knew it at the time or not.
2. They really are something aren't they?

I guess about the drama, I just assumed that a single woman adopting was basically a no go in SK. The stigmas of being a single mom and the stigmas of adoptions still seem quite raw from what I see in dramas. I might be wrong. I hope I'm wrong.

I was watching a recent drama. An adult daughter gets up in the middle of the night and stumbles over her sleeping mother. She exclaims 'Why are you sleeping on the living room floor when you have a perfectly comfortable bed?'
I'll tell you a secret, I do that too. When bedtime hits I stand at the doorway deciding 'Which is it tonight, bed or living room floor?'
This is partially due to K-dramas. All those scenes of working class parents sleeping on heir bed rolls. A couple years ago it was an unmercifully hot summer night. The bed felt like a furnace. Then K-dramas came to mind. I hopped out of bend, sprawled on the hardwood floor in the front room and thought "Oooh, the is soooo niiice!"
