EXO seriously messes with my head. They sound too good to be true live. Sometimes I think they do a live pre-recording without the choreo and then play that to the choreo during the actual performance. BUT, I have no proof of that, so I’m going to stick with, it sounds recorded but it’s not.
watch their live concert for song like Wolf, Drop That or Monster. They’re really good.
I love this comment about Exo’s live performance, and this is one of the best of them so far…. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58lTSVJ6f2M&t=639s
That was my “this performance” choice, but it will work for this category too. Almost any SHINee performance, really. Not from this year, but this is what they can do, not even bothering to re-record their backing vocals for a single performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeESEkNHVdQ
This one I’ve seen. It’s pretty amazing. I had to read a break down in the comments to even follow it because they corrected so well.
Except for Taemin who I guess didn’t notice, lol .
I’m in love with Dong woon’s vocals right now, because he’s very good live. And this would be my vote for “song that needs a little more love too.” https://youtu.be/JrMiwFBwaGc
@ally-le What did I just listen to!? That song fills at least 3 different categories for me. Song That Makes You a Mess because you can can feel the raw emotion in his performance. Little Known Song That Deserves More Attention because, seriously, only so few views on YT. I sure hope the other video and music platforms have more hits than that. Your Live Performance Sounds Recorded, But It’s Not, and I seriously felt there were times when it was, but clearly its not. He really is vocally good. Just daebak.
I know! He’s amazing! The more seasoned Lights tell me he was horrible 9 years ago, but what a difference a decade makes! I love his voice the most of all Highlight. The most emotion, the warmest timbre. I’m in love, I tell you.
You can usually hear breathing, voice cracks, and some pitch instability with live performances. Especially if they’re dancing too. It’s almost impossible to dance and sing perfectly well at the same time. Also, you can hear background tracks and the artist’s recorded voices behind some live performances. And that helps them stay on pitch. There are some artists that have perfect pitch though, or near perfect pitch and they usually don’t need their background tracks.
But I’ve heard some artists will record their songs with breathing sounds before the performance to make it sound live but then actually lip sync. That’s why I feel like I can never tell.
@raonah so have I. This post and this post. LAR is a total find f#ck.
It’s been really difficult for me to tell as of late. The most frustrating ones are where some members sing and others don’t. What especially annoys me about this is the uneven volume. Argh!
Agree to all of this, except breathing can still be from a pre-recorded live they’re lipsyncing to, which will then usually have been polished a bit, but they kept in a bit of breathing to make sure it still sounds live.
It’s hard to hear sometimes whether someone’s live or not imo, especially since the more skilled you are the less breathing, pitch problems etc there’ll be. So unless the singer or sound technician makes mistakes it can be hard to tell sometimes.
Yeah especially with the intense choreos such as many kpop groups have, it would literally be physically impossible for even the best singers to sing while doing this or that move, so a lot of the time those performances are lipsynced even if the group is perfectly capable of singing it like the studio version. Or partly lipsynced, that happens a lot too.
@mary I keep getting a notification for kaybee’s post above. I’ve gotten it about 4 or 5 times now. I click on it, it takes me to her comment and the notif disappears but then it shows up again later. Please help 🙏
I really like band’s performance because they have more space to interact with the public. So any live of Ft Island, Lee Hong Ki can’t do playback :p or N.Flying with Lee Seung Hyub and Hwe Seung.
The one group that really surprised me a lot this year in terms of live vocals is Wanna One. Before getting into them I thought they’d be extremely mediocre or even bad, but I was so pleasantly surprised that I came to love them as a group, among other things exactly because of their vocalists, in fact I even bought their concert dvd lol. Their main vocals are amazing live, their lead vocals always deliver and even their subvocals usually sound so good live that I got really confused in the beginning lol.
It’s hard to find good videos from their tour lives since their agency deleted any fancams they could find, but this one is of one of the main vocals’ solo stage followed by a group ballad (with not all members showing but can’t have it all I guess pfftt).
(Sidenote: Aside from the main rapper, their rapline is not on the same level as their vocalists and the rap doesn’t fit this song, I’m aware lol, however their vocalists are just soooo good and always nail their lives)
This is Lee Suji, right? If so, yeah, infamous with her dancing and getting into the acts when they’re singing–to me at least.
That “Air” performance was awesome! Yoon is seriously killing Mino as my bias in that group. Jinu’s voice is so instrumental to the Winner sound, it’s crazy!
Yoon is brilliant! And he has been gaining more much deserved recognition lately! ❤️
And yes! Yoon somehow makes songs that suit Jinwoo’s voice a lot! Or actually all 4 voices… He always has Winner in his mind rather than wanting to shine himself! I am pretty sure he reigns in his voice so that he matches with the group.. you should check his solos/ English covers where he lets lose!
