Happy Friday, everyone.

@ xiaoSxin
Whoah -- that's crazy! Does this mean the BOF DVD does not have Almost Paradise playing often and at the most inappropriate times? What travesty.

I have noticed that some of the DVD versions take out all of the latest US music they use during the original air. That's because of copyright, obviously, but in this case -- because the horrible music was original OST -- this may be more because of all the people complaining. Remember, during it original airing, they toned down on Almost Paradise and started using instrumental versions?

I like to think my complaining played a part on it.

Even with a cleaned up OST, though, that drama is still a train wreck and a crime against humanity.

@44 Snikki -

My boyfriend told me about this Korean lawyer in NYC who choked out an aggressor in his apartment lobby. My first thought was — samsooki? so if that was you, WTG, secret ninja assassin!

LOL. No, wasn't me. Choking out is a brutal submission hold and it takes a lot of nerve to use it. It is also very dangerous to use, and I do not recommend it even if you are being 'faced' by another person.

The problem with situational use of force is that it must always be proportional to the level of threat faced. If you can walk away (or run away), then almost any use of force will be dis-proportionate. It sounds unfair, but there are good reasons why that is the case.

Example: somebody curses you, follows you around, finally faces you up, wags a finger in your face, and makes verbal and physical threats. you have just been assaulted, from a criminal law perspective, but, if you can walk away, 99.999% of all professionals who train fighters and law enforcement personnel and so on, will urge you, "do not fight, do not escalate."

What that guy did was pretty cool, and I might have done the same thing in similar circumstances (and, in law school, actually, I did, but that's another story for another day, but the ending to that story is that I got my car vandalized by parties unknown after i choked out an idiot, so, was it really worth it), but honestly, I do not recommend any use of force if the option to walk or run away exists. You simply have no idea what will happen if you fight back.

1. If you win, then will the guy come back with his friends two days later? Will he just find out where you live and start vandalizing your car or property, forcing you to pay hundreds of dollars worth of deductibles? Will he come back with a gun?

2. If you lose, then what? Now you are in a terrible situation, possibly against a person that just beat you, escalated to the point of violence, and if he has any weapons, now you are in serious trouble.

best advice I can give - walk away, run away. only if you cannot do either, should you consider the use of force.

i can't believe it's friday already! That means I've spent an entire week watching episodes of Unstoppable Marriage, which can possibly claim the #1 spot for 'my favorite drama' even though it's a sitcom and even though I'm only halfway done. it's so hilarious that my asthma kicked in sometimes from all the laughing and everyone is pretty much very likable. Does anyone know a korean sitcom similar to Unstoppable Marriage and at the same level of humor? I tried Unstoppable High Kick, which people say was really funny, but it's nowhere as funny as Unstoppable Marriage.

Hey!! Anyone of you watching IRIS? Finally, dirty bomb and hostage holding tactics were used.

I have one question. From Episode 1 to 18, the emphasis was always on 2 parties talk between North and South Korea, but from Episode 19 and 20, the 2-party talk has become six-party talk? ^__________^

@ fans of Hindi movies: Check out "Wake Up, Sid." It's very cute. It has Ranbbir Kapoor (bad actor, but bearable) and Konkana Sen (awesome actress). Ranbhir's characters -- Sid (Siddharta) -- is a spoiled rich brat with no direction in life and failing his way through college, while Sen's characters is a slightly older woman -- fun, but serious -- from Kolkata, trying to live her dream as a writer in Mumbai. It's a very traditional romantic Hindi movie (complete with dramatics and fantasy), but fun nonetheless. I wish it were anyone else but Ranbhir, but I guess India doesn't have that many "young" good actors (with nepotistic connections).

DVD releases in Jan 2010

Another rec is Love Aaj Kaal (I think I had mentioned this one earlier). The DVD came out last month. At least it did in N. America. It's a really lovely movie (typical Hindi movie, but with the kind of heart you got in Veer Zaara and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham). High praise, I know.

JB recaps for Will it Snow for Christmas were just ah-mazing. I'm going to try the show this weekend or winter break.

Hm, Nickkhun doesn't seem that bad of an actor.. Pretty good at doing skits on Star King. He needs to start out somewhere right?

Found out yesterday that Tuesday? marked the 100th day since Jaebom went byebye. Sigh, I just wanna stalk him to Seattle & bring him back to Korea..

Sort of legal question...my friend's ex-boyfriend will not pay her the money she put up for his bond. They were dating at the time and he didn't have anyone else to help him out...his parents were no help. She wants to get the money because the guy just pretty much dumped her and verbally abused her after she looked after him (do his missed school work, visit him in jail). She wants to pursue this legally. She lives in Florida...can she do a small court case? He says she doesn't have a case against him and will not pay her back.

Omg are you in for a treat! delightful girl Choon Huyng is absolutely but what else DELIGHTFUL! I am currently watching Hong Gild Dong, I would really really like to have KJH now. But I am not brave enough to fight Samsooki and Javabeans for him. :)
Episode 11- final is on Veoh in pretty good quality, you have to search under HGD to find it though. Aznv has all the episodes including the special. Do you want me to send you a code? I think I have one left.

@ 60, may I take a swipe at an answer?

If she paid his bond without any agreement from him to repay, then she has no case. It's called a gift, and it is not a loan.

If he had promised to pay her back -- and she can somehow prove it -- then she has a case.

Whether or not he dumped and abused her is irrelevant to the case. It's all about what transpired between the time when he asked her to bail him out and she bailed him out.

She should write down their conversation from then, crosscheck phone records and text messages, and make sure that she argues that he promised to pay her back. If he paid back even a dime, and she can prove it, then that's proof of a loan -- and she will win.

Random: so, that ad for "did you hear about the morgans?" keeps playing on the side of the page, and I keep thinking "please tell me the bear eats SJP. please tell me the bear eats SJP...."

Not so random: Love the song of the day!! Upon first listening it reminds me a little of the more mellow aspect of Bloc Party (Think "this modern love"), and yet not...
Samsooki: good call on the Echo and the Bunnymen thing, but yeah, again it's just not quite... Aren't they from Italy? I wan't to say I read something about that somewhere. ... must check out now.

I think I'm going to hold back on the whole "will it Snow For Christmas" train. 1) Melodrama: meh 2) Christmas is a depressing enough season without adding melodrama 3) I should really, really probably get some work on this thesis done over break. 8|

@ xiaoSxin

I've seen this happen a lot on DVD releases of television series. The first time I noticed it was Scrubs, where a perfectly apt Five for Fighting song had been used in the original, and then replaced on the DVD. They mentioned in the commentary for the episode that while the artist and publishing company had given permission for the song to be used in the broadcast episode, they had refused to extend the rights to distribution, thus the change in soundtrack.

Happy Fri everyone:-)Guess everyone must be in or moving into the holiday mode now.:-)Wish this holiday season brings a lot of cheer into all of your hearts:-)

I wish YB was still below the 'Under Progress' title.The 'Done' title has such a depressing ring of finality to it.:-( On the bright side, there are so many dramas I still have to see .:-)

@Nom_Kitteh -I thought Ranbir was the saving grace of the movie.He brings this understated ,breezy and effortless charm that is so rare in Hindi movies these days.I like Konkona's acting generally but she has done characters so similar to the one in 'Wake up Sid' and hardly brings anything new to it.So I was a bit disappointed with her acting in it.But the movie is still worth a watch - for the really peppy songs:-)

I've joined the "Will it Snow for Christmas" bandwagon:-) Felt a bit like a traitor for watching it so soon after YB hehe:-)I like the show so far and Go-soo is just WOW:-)

I never finished Lovers in Paris--I only got about halfway because Lee Dong-Gun's character totally broke my heart into tiny little pieces. :( Oh, and I also didn't like the hero, thought he was too stiff & boring. I think this was the first drama I ever gave up after watching so many episodes already... I totally want my 10+ hours back. lol.

Go to the torrents page and you'll find it featured on the middle box. Click on the "24" .You need to start ASAP since it does take a bit to download all 24 episodes. For the subs, click on the subtitle link on the left and scroll down the list until you find it.

Happy Friday! We're having our first snow today (and it's sticking! yay!)...am planning on making some hot chocolate and catching up with email (and dramas...)

@djes
Thanks for the link! I was excited to see Alcheon (Lee Seung Ho). Thought he was wonderful in QSD. Lee Han Kyu looks so pretty with the glasses...he could totally be a jpop idol :) And Yoo Ah-in and Song Joong-ki *heart*

Is anybody watching Liar Game 2? When I watched the first episode I was like that actress seems familiar...Rinko Kikuchi's in this? I mean, I'm excited to see her onscreen...but interesting choice as a jdorama comeback. It really is her right? and I'm not imagining things? I heard she's going to be in Tran Ahn Hung's adaptation of Murakami's Norwegian Wood, which sounds like it'll be interesting

@Nom_Kitteh
I've been planning to watch Wake Up Sid (I love Konkana Sen Sharma). Yeah, there isn't much influx of talented young blood in the industry and if they did make it they would be doing low budget, low advertised films. It's really rare for them to make it into the mainstream industry. However, I think that it's slowly changing. I notice this a lot with new directors coming into the Hindi industry. Like Nishikant Kamat who directed the amazing Marathi movie Dombivali Fast (name of one of the trains that runs on the Central Line from Mumbai towards the suburbs) and then because it was so critically successful he was able to get funding to do Mumbai Meri Jaan. I liked both movies because both were so organic in nature, the former being a Marathi man angry with how (local) justice is given and the later because it dealt with the train attacks of 2006 and was uniquely about the Mumbai experience.

I have to agree with Ana....I absolutely love ranbir kapoor...I have to disagree that Ranbir Kapoor is a bad actor...I think he is evolving into the best of his generation..I think he lend heart and soul to that movie...I didnt like him in sawaariya but he has been consistently good after that...Although its a long stretch i think he is the only replacement for Shahrukh Khan right now..I just watched My name is Khan Trailer...And i cannot wait for it to come out...Nothing really beats good old bollywood
I did not like Love aaj kaal...Anyone looking for a good bollywood movie...Watch Jab we met or Dhoom2...Super cute and cute actors...
I am apprehensive about watching Lovers in Paris...Coz i love Lee dong gun and dont want to see him sad

my friend’s ex-boyfriend will not pay her the money she put up for his bond. They were dating at the time and he didn’t have anyone else to help him out…his parents were no help. She wants to get the money because the guy just pretty much dumped her and verbally abused her after she looked after him (do his missed school work, visit him in jail). She wants to pursue this legally. She lives in Florida…can she do a small court case? He says she doesn’t have a case against him and will not pay her back.

Obviously, the facts are slim and everything below is asterisked with a huge "it depends on the facts*, but:

1. Is it possilbe that she has a case? Yes.
2. Is small claims court where you would bring it? Yes, unless we are talking a lot of money.
3. Does she need an attorney? It would be very helpful, but no, not really, as long as she has someone to guide her through the process and if she is relatively intelligent and focused enough to see it through.

Basically, here's what she would allege: I lent him money by paying for his bond. He and I agreed verbally that he would pay me back. Here's the evidence of that arrangement. Since the souring of the relationship, he has reneged on the promise to repay.

Here's what he would respond: There is no evidence of promissory note, and no evidence she didn't give me the money, and in fact, she gave me the money, not lent me the money. I never told her I would pay her back. I don't owe her.

The small claims court will examine the allegations and based on the evidence proferred by both sides, rule in favor of one or the other. The more pieces of evidence proferred in support of her allegations, the better her chances of winning. If she has no evidence or if she has contradictory evidence or if she has only her word and the word of others, she may not be able to overcome the presumption that money given to (or on behalf of) another person wasn't a gift.

Javabeans as always thanks for all your hard work. I found your site when I was addicted to Coffee Prince and never left. I have been reading religiously and you have turned me onto some dramas I would otherwise not bother watching. So thanks alot! Thanks to your timely recaps, I started watching some dramas (after they air in Korea) rather than eons after it aired in Korea such as YAB and currently Go Soo's new drama. I have never watched him before but he is AMAZING! After this one, I have to watch his others. I love Kim Sunah and watched her drama with Lee Dong Gun, it was alright. Not as good as City Hall--is it me or some of the dramas I find on Dramafever the subs are not as good as the Fan Subs? IMHO? I was going to finish watching City Hall (missing the last 3) on Drama fever and stopped after 5 minutes. I need to find quality subs. Usually they are awesome on DramaFever but this drama is difficult for my paltry Korean--too many terms I don't understand. I also was going to try to finish "Stars Lovers" the subs were missing alot so I stopped after 2 minutes on Dramafever as well. While I grateful for this awesome site, it sparks me more to continue on my korean studies so I WON'T really need subs. I have a LONG LONG way to go. I will never achieve what I want but I will try as best as I can.

Hong Gil Dong I stopped at episode 15 and could not go further maybe try again?

I cannot wait to get my Directors cut of YAB! This is a first for me to buy a drama and only SECOND korean drama after Kim Sam Soon. So it is big deal for me!

Sad to hear my fave variety I have been watching faithfully Family Outing is going to be cancelled. RATS!

Everyone Happy Holidays!

@ 57 Nom_Kitteh:

Konkona Sen Sharma is such an underrated actress! I've loved her in practically every film I've seen her in, especially in Mr. and Mrs. Iyer and Life in Metro. But bollywood's all about connections...the old boy fraternity. I have actually heard rave reviews about Ranbir's latest film, Rocket Singh. Though, I am kind of ambivalent about watching it because I'm so not a Ranbir fan. Hopefully, he's improved since his naked towel dancing days in Saawariya...lmao

But I am beyond ecstatic about the February release of My Name is Khan...it's so different from anything KJ's done before, plus it's shahrukh and kajol on screen together after 9 long years...*begins excessive fangirling*

@ 65 Ana:

Lol...I also felt a bit guilty about joining the WISFC so soon after YAB ended, but I figure I kind of need a break from the rom-com genre for a while. Plus, Go Soo is one fine, fine man.

Konkana sen is a brilliant actress...Although she is charming and pretty in her own way...I think the only reason that she isnt as successful as she should be is because she is not conventionally good looking. But i think she has gotter farer than other more artsy actresses...
Ranbir kapoor has really improved with every movie...Sawariya was a snoozefest and just a big mess...But he has been consistently good after that

@ 73 and 65,
Okay, I might be willing to accept that Ranbir is a...good actor. I personally found him underwhelming in Wake Up, Sid. It's not a unique role -- spoiled, rich brat falls in love and learns to grow up into a mature, loving, nice man -- and as I was watching it, I kept thinking about how someone like Saif Ali Khan or Aamir Khan would play it, and there is just no comparison.

Also, I cannot get over the fact that Ranbir comes from the Kapoor dynasty. That means, immediate access to the best directors, best media, best publicity, best girlfriend ( Deepika ;-) ). So, is he a good actor or a fortunate actor with one of the most powerful Mumbai families behind him?

Maybe it is unfair to judge Ranbir's acting by comparing him to his father's and uncles' or to his semi-contemporaries'...but, sorry, I was not impressed with his acting.

Yes, I realize that I am being a hypocrite: Konkana Sen is Aparna Sen's daughter. But then, I never said that the Indian film industry is not one happy mafia-den :-). Konkana has earned her fame though.

Ana, I agree that Konkana's acting is the same in every movie. She really does need to push herself.

@71,
I just checked out the trailers for the two Marathi movies you listed! I had not heard of them. I probably won't watch them because when it comes to entertainment, I am strictly all about escapism (pretty boys and happy romance). Are you Marathi? I thought you were Bengali for some reason (don't know why).

Love ya all fellow Dramabeaners!
Happy holidays to ya all. Mine will be Bitter/Sweet, as I share with you that on the 6 of this month my bosses 15 year old son lost his life in a tragic hunting accident, we close the shop for the remaining part of the month, so financially not good.
But i have a smile on my face, not because I am focusing on my circumstances but I know that there is truly light at the end of the tunnel.

I am an old Classic Rock kind of guy I play 7 different instruments, so I just came across a Korean alternative rock band call "Huckleberry Finn" They remind me so much of Nirvana, I am surprise by it Korea is not know for their rock bands, but this guys totally rock.. Any more suggestions about some good Korean Rock Bands?

Thanks again JB for such an awesome place for us to share.. All you guys Rock...Love ya all... :o

I really don't know how I feel about Ranbir Kapoor since I've only seen one of his movies (Bachna Ae Haseeno). But compared to other star kids (like Tusshar Kapoor) he's doing better. Though with some star kids some have made bad choices (Vivek Oberoi, who is obviously talented but some of his movie choices ::shakes head::) and others are finally growing into their own (like Shahid Kapoor). I do think that the star kid that probably made the best debut in the past three years has to be Neil Mukesh or Farhan Akhtar. Yeah..the Hindi film industry is pretty nepotistic...

The best actor to have join the industry w/o connections IMHO is Kay Kay Menon but he's not the typical Bollywood hero nor does he do mainstream movies...well John Abraham also would be considered an outsider as well (::sigh:: he really needs to do another movie that's like Deepa Mehta's Water---he was absolutely gorgeous in that and for once proved that he actually can act)

My Name is Khan...so Kajol and SRK are my fave couple ever but for some reason I'm not feeling this movie as much...

Happy Friday, everyone! If you are in a snowy area, drive carefully. I got into a terrible accident a couple of days ago (it's true: your life flashes before your eyes), and it was a gift from higher up that we all walked away unhurt. The cars, however, were not so lucky.

holy cow! I’m glad to hear you’re ok, and sorry about the cars!I had the same thing happen a few years ago (let’s hear it for modern safety engineering in vehicles!) and it is crazy how everything slows down and speeds up at the same time.

@79 lovin’ it

if you’re up for something crazy funny I would recommend HanaKimi (better if you’ve read the manga first, though, as it tends to play up the wacky and downplay the storyline a little. I would also recommend Mei chan no Shitsuji (Mei c?an’s Butler) and Atashinch no Danshi, they’re both from this year and entertainingly good. And definitely check out Nodame Cantabile!It’s awesome! ^^

Konkana Sen, she can look like a tomboy or a totally gorgeous sexy woman.
Mr. and Mrs. Iyer, 15 park Ave., Page3, Traffic signal, Omkara, Laaga Chunari Mein,Daag, Life in a metro, Aaja Nachle... I've only watch those, I thought they were
different enough... I'm her fan, can you see?

Your friend should go ahead and file in Florida Small Claims court:

1. If she wins, she gets back $600, and most likely the costs of filing the claim.

2. A non-legal benefit, she gets to drag the scumbag to court for a legitimate breach of contract suit and then air all her grievances - it sounds like she's really bitter and hurt, and perhaps its not just the money she is after, but the chance to vent and get closure and move from from this bad relationship.

If she had the documentation (bail receipt), then she's got to prove using all circumstantial facts to at her disposal, that there was a contract because there was exchange of (verbal) promises/consideration for the breach of which the law will provide a remedy.

Good luck.

Ranbir kapoor is a good actor, and Im not gonna knock him because its about time new blood came in to the Indian Industry, Im sick to the back teeth of seeing SRK, Saif and Salman play bachelors or college students. They're bloody 40 years old already, more Ranbir and Abhay Deol please. And Saif was awful in his first few movies, Ranbirs doing well.

Wake Up sid was a decent movie, Love aaj Kal not so much, the characters were stupid and sorry to say but sluts, they didn't know they were dating, and had a break up party. It was disturbing how dysfunctional the love between the pair was. Current crop of hindi films have been atrocious, the only half decent was Kaminey and even that was confusing. Hopefully My name is Khan will turn things around.

And seriously how does Akshay Kumar get work, Blue was god awful as was De Dhana Dan, I only watched them because the goddess Katrina Kaif was in them.

@86 Anonymous , @89 ockoala -

Tricky if all she has is a receipt (which proves only that she paid it) and her word (which doesn't go very far in court).

Still, ockoala has an interesting point. Litigation has other purposes than to merely win, although ockoala was extremely careful with how she phrased what she said, " legitimate breach of contract suit" etc. Filing suit that is, what courts would deem to be "frivolous" is actually actionable and can lead to contempt of court, counter-filings, etc. Best to speak with an attorney in the locality where the suit will be brought, first, just to get an idea of whether you have any chance.

@86, 89 -

If she wins, she gets back $600, and most likely the costs of filing the claim.

Well, let's be on the safe side and say this:

1. If she wins, she gets what's called a judgment, which is just a piece of paper that says she is owed this money.

2. Will she get back the costs of filing? Maybe. Really depends on the court and the facts.

The problem with winning at small claims against an individual is that winning a "judgment" doesn't really change anything.

Now you've won, you have a piece of paper in your hand. Now, you have to try to collect that money. So you hand over the judgment to the douchebag, and he says, "so.... what do you want me to do with this? eat it?" It can be very difficult to collect money owed, even with a court judgment, especially if the other person is living hand to mouth, working odd jobs or not at all, etc.

Even established collection agencies for banks, mortgage companies, big lenders, have difficult time trying to collect. Somebody owes a lot of money to a bank or a credit card company. They stop paying. The bank then goes to court in a lawsuit against the individual. The individual doesn't show up at court, and so the judgment is a default judgment. The individual still doesn't pay. The matter is then likely turned over to a collection agency, and then it could be weeks and weeks or months or years before any payment is made.

It is extremely hard to get blood from a stone, even with a judgment.

I've been meaning to watch Wake Up Sid! I've only actually seen the boy in Saawariya (which was extremely pretty and extremely random - how gorge was Rani though OMG) but he has a fizzy charm that's very appealing. I confess to finding him adorable although Bachna Ae Haseeno turned me off (him), even from the previews but with Sid I was back on board again, LMAO. He just has this easygoing charm that's so likeable. As far as acting goes, I think he's very natural; he's not being held up merely by his connections. That can only take you so far, if you can't connect with audiences you're going to find it hard, a la Tusshar - he got in through his connections, wasn't a mindblowing actor nor even goodlooking (sorry Tusshar), so his movies became rarer and he ended up trying to prove himself in the comedy niche where he's doing a decent job. Anyway, I plan to watch Sid but I feel like watching a lotttt less Bollywood movies than I used to growing up with it. A lot of the Bollywoodness has seeped out, the wholesomeness I guess. The last Bollywood movie I watched was Taare Zameen Par a few weeks ago - I cried through about 95% of it, it was like being tortured never doing that again kthnx. It was wonderful, inspiring, lovely but also emotionally ravaging, especially because it's a child, this paragon of energy and honesty and emotional freedom, dear God it was horrible, I cried and I cried and I cried. Gime a romantic melodrama where rocks falls everyone dies and I'm basically okay, something like that and I'm dead.

In these tough economic times, while the onus is on the girlfriend to prove that the bail money was a loan, unless you are really wealthy and wouldn't blink an eye at $600, its hard to believe that a person would just gift $600 to a significant other. And without written proof either way (i.e. this money is a loan or this money is a gift), circumstantial evidence becomes quite crucial in the deliberation.

Taking into account the financial circumstances and other ancillary facts, your friend may have a stronger or weaker case. I concur 100% with samsooki, just inquire with a local FL lawyer if possible.

I'm all for making that bad boyfriend be accountable for his actions under a court of law - but unfortunately, he can't be sued for being a super crappy boyfriend. And I will refrain from making a tie-in joke and end here.

And while I agree with samsooki that a judgment without the practical ability to make the person pay the judgment is a pyyric victory, still, sometimes you need to know justice prevailed.

@ Samsooki

"so…. what do you want me to do with this? eat it?”

LOL...sounds like something he would say. As long as it does not have a piece of cow, chicken or pig...he is vegetarian...and a douche.

P.S. I work with pharmaceutical lawyers...boring bunch they are.
