7 episodes into Coffee Prince and I'm having a hard time staying interested. I hope it gets better. :-/ I've heard such good things about it and I love the deep voice guy, but other than that, it's almost painful to watch. I'll keep trucking. :)

@ ackoala: In these tough economic times, while the onus is on the girlfriend to prove that the bail money was a loan, unless you are really wealthy and wouldn’t blink an eye at $600, its hard to believe that a person would just gift $600 to a significant other.

But people do, don't they? It was in the news a week or two ago about some man preying on women in the Lonely Heart's column, which is such a douchey and typical thing to do, and sadly it's not even surprising that women fall for it. But he got caught, the scumbag.

Happy Friday everyone!
I was having comp difficulties and was afraid to do any leisure activities for fear of losing power or information. I just finished reading all of #113 and wow! I've missed everyone this week! Loved the romanization discussion. I'm learning so much. Helped with my pronunciation too! Thanks.
Anyway....
@robotmatsuri
Thank you so much for the sugestions. I haven't looked into it yet but I definitely will!

@53 djes ICOMYM’s members….., may I get your attentions?

Yes! Why am I so pissed? Why do the young-uns have to be so darn cute!

@57 Nom_Kitteh : Hindi movies

I actually wanted to know about "Paa." Do you know if anyone has seen it? I've read and watch some of the previews and its interesting but I'd like to know hat others thought about it. Also that latest with Kareena and Saif where he's a terrorist? I wanted to see this so bad but didn't know it was playing until it was gone.
And did someone say SHAHID!!!! *swoon*

I'm trying to finish CITC this weekend but I do have one question is Will it Snow addictive? Reading the blurb at the beginning of JB's recaps I'm under the impression that its a little emotionally draining so I wanted to know if its a drama that should be watched week to week or could be marathon'd without a gallon of ice cream?

Any echos on the new Shahid and Genelia film? It was premiered on the 15th.
Check out Shirley Valentin for those approching a crossroad in your life or not:

@80 Nom_Kitteh
Neither actually... But I'm a huge fan of Bengali directors/writers (Satyajit Ray, Aparna Sen, Ritupurno Ghosh) and same with Tamil directors (Mani Ratnam, Gautam Menon,etc). And I heart Mumbai, probably one of my favorite cities and my interest in Marathi stemmed in part because I did an internship in Mumbai one summer.

@Amg1
Orange Days is one of my favorite jdoramas as well...I thought both the leads did a great job. And Kou and Tsumabuki Satoshi had great chemistry.

Big hello to all!

Just finished my review, and I want to drop something here. I totally love this site. Glad, I found it actually haha....long way here ^^

Anyone watched You're beautiful? I heard so much about this drama, but I'm not really sure whether watch or not, because I'm not really a fan of Park Shin Hye.
So, is it worth to watch?

Hope everyone have good time now, since christmas is very close. Don't know why, but this year I'm really exicted about christmas. I'm gonna make cookies tomorrow, will try to find more episodes of On Air, and try to watch the 1st ep WISFC :D

If you want a funny, light watch, I'd say You're Beautiful is okay. If you already don't like Park Shin-Hye, maybe not--her character annoyed me to be honest. Maybe read the recaps to see if it's something you'd like?

I just finished WISFC episode 6 earlier, things are starting to pick up--fast. I thought that Tae-Joon was a stand-up guy, but he has proven me otherwise. What a petty jerk.

P.S. Go Soo's stares are so full of intensity they scare me sometimes. :O

@samsooki

The story is: he was attacked on Wall Street. He punched the guy in the face and proceeded to head home, but he was followed to his apartment building, so that's when he used his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu skills.

But I agree with walking away. According to The Art of War -- escape is not defeat.

@viola

Why didn't I find out about Aznv before?! I went ahead and created an account. Awesome site! Thank you so much!!! Now, all I have to do is download the required media player.

@reluctantbutaddicted

And don't forget, Diaper-Changer at 3am.

@lumi

I'm confused...or just lazy to figure out how to download videos and subtitles from d-addicts. But if I get really really desperate to watch a drama, that would be my last resort (or buy a box set).

And to the rest who plan to watch a movie this weekend, if you have time, catch Up in the Air. Great film!

Judging by the number of raving fan-atics who caused temporary site crashes for dramabeans, I would say that ppl like it... just a little. Check out dramabeans recaps: http://www.dramabeans.com/tag/youre-beautiful/

Happy OT Friday to all

@Samsooki

Since you are going to be busy with the last min shopping, does it mean that you are not watching Avatar tonight ( the premiere night)?? I'm sorry to hear that since we all know how much you were looking forward to this movie :(
As for CITC, I gave up in "harassing" you into watching it...so many drama's ..so little time. I understand, my friend.
Is anybody else ( besides serendipity and nycgrl) going away for the holidays? I can't remember clearly, but I believe someone else here is going to Korea or was it Thailand during this season....Have fun...
My oldest sister just left SF, will stay overnight in Miami, before flying to Brazil- a Amazon River cruise...sounds good to me...in case you are wondering, I just live vicariously through my 3 (single) but world traveled sisters...Some day I will go again, too(did it before the kids were born). So, all you single people here, go and enjoy your travelling now...go see the world ;)

I'm headed out to a Christmas concert - snow not scheduled to begin until after midnight, but people predictably freaking out right, left and center. LOL!

@ greentea....
LOL! Well, if there is a question that will get this thread going! Yes, many of us have seen it. Yes, many of us have loved it. LOL! It's a comedy. If you want light and fluffy, ready to make fun of anything funny (and believe it or not, one review criticized it for being "frivolous" - well, DUH!) this is for you. If you want serious, this is NOT for you. It's actually unlike most k-dramas I've seen in that it did go straight for the funny, having 1 of the few scenes in ANY show that had me fall out of a chair laughing, but also having a scene that had me crying buckets.

It's in my top 5 favorite k-dramas of all time. It is not perfect, but it's really well done, and a fun ride.
Go to the sidebar of this site, to the finished recaps, and you'll find all the YAB news that is fit to print, including recaps and spoilers, so buyer beware.
I understand that SBS is marathoning YAB all this weekend as a rerun. That should be a hoot. If I was in Korea, I'd SO be throwing a watching party.

(hey samsookie - CiTC dropped itself into the top 5 as of now....hint hint hint)
Off to listen to creole christmas music....laissez les bon temps roulez!

I noticed I'm been doling out legal advice (boring) and have not contributed any drama talk (exciting) today.

Must remedy that now:

1. Robbers - I'm up to episode 9 and not loving it, but in honor of my unnis, will persevere and finish it this weekend, if possible, so I can go on my date with someone special and have something to talk about. :-)

2. WISFC - Love Go Soo, hate Han Ji-wan, indifferent to Han Ye-seul, but drama is seriously causing me love/hate spasms.

3. Damo - up to episode 6 - want to have a truly meaningful discussion about it once I finish, so will refrain from revealing any of my thoughts about this drama right now.

I've got ROI and CitC to watch before Chuno starts, but its a nice manageable amount, I think.

@Avatar,

Went to the Thursday midnight screen and saw it in 3D. Wow, I didn't know 3D had some this far -- no jitter or motion headache, and the screen truly is there in front of your lap.. Hmm, now Ttinking about how Go Soo would look in front of my lap . . .

The expressiveness of the Blue Men with Thongs was remarkable. (Didn't like that Sigourney Weaver's blue chic was wearing a Stanfurd shirt tho. WHATEVERZ) The love story itself is the best part of the movie, as the facial expressions and overall body language was pretty great. No O/NPW though. Maybe in Avatar 2?

It's Dances with Wolves in the jungle, but it's also a grizzled cartoon of Marine "ooh-raa!!" banter, tough-talking scientists who also have their own self-interests, a tale on globalization, the contractor life of soldiers of fortune, and so on.

And in fact, the biggest James Cameron progression was that the script was, though not that original, was by far the most mature, accomplished thing James Cameron has ever been a part of. Military and corporate-as-military tropes has been part of James Cameron films for years (and though he himself is a ecoactivist, his muse still harks back to post-Vietnam sensibility -- the rehabilitated soldier-turned-counterculture rebellion, the disdain AND admiration for leatherneck protocol, the alpha-sexism with having woman either strive for Amazonian empowerment or be objects of casual misogyny . . . which is nicely subverted by Sigourney Weaver's character, who is intelligent, cynical, compassionate, and therefore very real) the efficiency of operations . . . but here, it's all much further along.

I wasn't as enthralled with its world building as some others were. The thing I most appreciated was not the CGI (which is well done, pretty, but still indiscriminate . . . the jungle still looked like any other jungle on Earth but with pretty highlights) near the beginning, where the main character had to interact with the indigenous life from a scientific, zoological perspective. That is, the film was congnizant that not all big animals, when fronting, meant to kill. Some do it in order to establish territory and are not aggressive predators. Some animals move in herds. Some animals react when one link of the local ecochain is broken. Film explores that a bit, and THAT is when you really feel "wow, I am REALLY in Pandora!!!" A little science talk makes it a lot more real.

It's a nice adventure with a lovely love story (and the blue men have really nice bodies. Curiously I didn't see any genitalia. Budget constraints, or does reproduction occur through their hair? Seriously, it seems they do everything with their hair.) If you can see it in 3D, definitely go for it!!

I'm not a lawyer just an old lady. My advise to the young lady trying to recoup her $600, is chalk it up as the price you paid for a lesson learned and move on! Oh, and try to pick a better sort of gentleman next time.
One more week and its Christmas! Will there be an OT? Yes, my life is so boring and I'll have nothing better to do, that I care about OT's on Christmas!
2 more episodes of IRIS to watch (waiting for subs). Really enjoying it, nice break from Rom/Coms. Looks like WISFC will be next on my watch list.
Enjoy this festive season and stay safe! I'm working this weekend keep out of my ER!

Regardless, thank you for an awesome review! And I'm not even imbibed the happy sauce yet, sparkly dress and fab new boots ready myself for tonight's 987th Christmas party of the season. Is it over yet?

@ coco

Best advice ever. Wish I took that advice to heart when my evil ex cheated on me and dumped me, but nooooo, I had to write a scathing ode to a failed relationship in my 5th year reunion book, and now it's immortalized forever in print and another 5 years later, I'm all white picket fence, 2 kids, a dog and a husband happy. What I'm saying is: it does get better, and it happens for a reason, just hang in there when the heartache happens.

I happened to be rewatching On Air episode 3 yesterday, and was laughing at the corny lines that Song Yoon-Ah's character has used before in her dramas.

"My heart is not available for takeout."
"My love is getting downloaded right now."
"Your love takes buffering."

So I'm curious, what's the corniest line you've ever heard in a drama?

@16 soni

This recipe is under the category of "fast , easy and yummy"
Cooking time 1 hour
prep time 30 min

Ingredient
- 15 to 18 large chicken wings washed and drip-dried( crunchier skin when cooked)
-1 cup pf white sugar
-2 "rounds"( explaination later*) of dark soy sauce ( I use Amoy)
-3 "rounds" of light soy sauce
- ground black pepper
-1 handful of oil

Preheat oven @ 380 degree

--On a large oven pan, mix the sugar with the chicken wings. Now drizzle the soy sauce on the chicken in a circular motion (** each large circular motion of drizzling = 1 "round" ...sorry, I cook all the time, but never really "measure" the actual amount. All the women in our family cook " by taste, smell, and look"...yes, when I first learn from my mother, I was "ugh...how???", but 30 years later, I'm doing the exact same thing) Dark soy sauce 2 rounds...Light 3 rounds
--Sprinkle the ground black pepper lightly onto the chicken ( enough to see some , but not too much to "overkill"- should not taste the black pepper, just a hint of it.)
--Pour cooking oil into a "scooped" hand and mix this with the meat
--Line up the wings so that it's a row of "w" ( the drummets of the wings on your left side)
--place the tray of chicken in oven and cook for 1 hour

The results- beautiful, yummy chicken wings

If you want the skins of the wings to be "a little bit " crunchy- BROIL on HIGH for 3-5 min . PLEASE keep an eye on the meat during this part or else- burnt wings

ENJOY

That mock-scene in On Air episode 3 takes the cake, baby. I even transcribed it for everyone in this OT, comment 131:

http://www.dramabeans.com/2009/11/open-thread-108/

Actually, a lot, a heck of lot of dialogue in k-dramas are unbearably corny when lifted out of context. But that's what makes it such a goofy, enjoyable ride.

@ 101 Yen

Honestly if you're not liking it by now, you're not going to like it by episode 13 and you're not going to like it by the end. And honestly the best half of the drama is the first 13 episodes (I'm kind of a hardcore stan and I love the whole thing, but I've been told the first half to 3/4 is the best part and afterwards it gets kind of slow). so yeah if it's painful for you to watch (again I don't understand how) then just quit.
Can I specifically ask, though, what you don't like about it?
i mean (I'm trying to think of what could be a negative) maybe it's the whole keeping-your-gender-a-secret thing...?

JHB: It’s not that simple, we have history, ever since I was his housekeeper in Paris….. (ockaola fell out of bed laughing, seriously, funniest inside reference to writer’s earlier work Lovers in Paris)

PSH: How long does it take to buffer your love.
LCH: Do not bother JHB anymore, because that person is *cue dramatic music* ……my air supply. And my air supply is dying……..of an incurable disease.

LOL! Thanks for that. I had about the same reaction during the 'housekeeper in Paris' part. Btw, I loved that the Director brought up that cheesy buffering line again in the last episode. :D

dramalover,
You are complaining about a "foreign" actor in a drama stolen from a Japanese drama/manga? What is intrinsically Korean about this story - I would think that the issues are actually universal.
If you would have said you had your doubts about Nichkhun because so far he has not shown that he can act worth beans, I would agree with you wholeheartedly. But saying you are against him because he's not native Korean and has an accent...that sounds like it has more to do with your prejudices than with Nichkhun's artistic merit.
I always wondered why Nichkhun stayed in the back of his group during interviews, never saying very much even though he seems to have many fans who adore him. Well, now I think I understand why he just smiles.

Started "Tree of Heaven" out of sheer curiosity. Still curious so I will continue. The only thing... I think PSH has cried 12 separate times already! WTH! And Lee Wan, though I definitely don't think he's the best actor, for some reason, I like seeing him on screen, plus I think that its great to see his progression from TH to STS. I'm not sure if I buy autism as his ailment but hey, just finished ep 1.

I'm glad that you like it....the recipe is good for either wings or thighs or drumsticks...for best results, mix the sauces with the meat well, then add blk pepper and last the oil...my girls like the skins to be more crunchy, so I found out it's best if you place skin facing up. I love this because it NOT time consuming, and thus I can just "whip it out" like *snap* that ;)

@langdon
I just finished epi 3 of IRIS...ok...it's getting good, and yes...LBH is growing on me...he's cute, but ...I like my Gong Yoo more ;) I'm very loyal to my man ( men...JJH, JGS and the rest of my manrem ;)

@holiday party at work
unlike the rest of you guys, my work place's party is veeeery mild ( what's milder than PG13???) It's just going to be all day buffet ( everyone can just stroll in/out of the meeting room and get stuff...can stay and mingle and return to work)...yeah...I will probably just peek in between patients, chat up with a couple other workers, and work throughout the day...sorry , no awesome sauce :)

@holiday schedule
Besides work, I will be busy with the girls since they will be home during the breaks. Even though, the Christmas party will be at my sister in law's house , I got the pleasure of making the main dishes and then bring them over..yeah(unfortunate for me, none of my sis in law can cook). I will make the sticky rice again (different side of the family, so no repeat), and also a full 7 bones/ribs prime ribs ( the ironic part will be that I will not eat any of the beef - no red meat for me ;)..oh well.
What I'm looking forward is that my friend, my Hyung Tae, will be in town and hopefully will spend Boxing Day with me and my family, catching up :)

My J-drama recommendation:
1. Hotaru no Hikari
2. Love Revolution
3. Itoshi Kimi E

All from Fujiki Naohito. Hataru no Hikari is the more recent one amongst the 3 dramas. He is not so handsome now because of the wrinkles. He is more handsome in Love Revolution and Itoshi Kimi E. But these 2 dramas are quite old.

I also like
1. Nodame Cantabile: Best drama of Tamaki Hiroshi
2. Bara no Nai Hanaya: Like Takenchi Yuko
3. Last Friends: I like Ueno Juri in this drama and Nodame Cantabile. She is really a talented actress although she is not very beautiful
4. Galileo: detective drama. Fun to watch.
5. Pride: Like Takenchi Yuko and Kimura Takuya a lot in this drama
6. Love Shuffle is also fun to watch.

Other hot picks which I do not like personally. But you can give it a try.
1. Absolute Boyfriend
2. Kimi wa Petto

You can watch these dramas from here:

http://www.mysoju.com/

But some links are broken.

Hehe, you should change your handle to enthusiasticallyaddicted. :) You don't sound quite so reluctant anymore. lol.

@144, ana -

:D

As far fetched as it sounds, I've not seen Titanic, ever. I'm not big on tragic movies. See, I KNOW the boat sank, and I KNOW that a lot of people died. That kind of sucks, and knowing that there is a 100% certainty of this whole movie ending badly, I was never that inclined to watch it. Why watch a movie you know will end badly?

Which is why, despite being somewhat bellezaified, MiSa is like 30th on my watch list, and constantly moves down a notch whenever a k-drama that doesn't involve a bullet in the brain airs.

hehe.

Well, if you liked Hana Yori Dango, Pride and Orthros no Inu -

I'd say try...
Hana Kimi - be in the mood for sudden bouts of inter-dorm competition that usually involve cross-dressing

Nodame Cantabile - music student angst, plus bouts of sudden manga violence and the weirdest Japanese guy pretending to be German ever seen on TV

Gokusen (1, not 2 or 3)
Kimi wa Petto
Hero
Honjitsu mo Hare. Ijo Nashi (I'm going to keep recommending this one until someone other than me says they've seen it! I may be the only one around here who saw it when it was broadcast and loved it)

And as always, my general rule when looking for new j-dramas to watch - anything with Abe Hiroshi. He's been in more tv series in Japan for the last 20 years than practically anyone - I think he averages 3 a year - and he's usually a reliable indicator of both comedies and dramas (not so big on historical Japanese stuff, but I'll watch).

It's snowing like crazy here, so I'm going to hunker down, bake some brioche and watch the last episode of CitC on the big screen instead of the laptop.

@ 136: nea:notoriousnoona: I kinda love Tree of Heaven, despite the sobfest. I love the intensity and I LOVE Lee Wan. It's a breeze at only 10 eps, too. The latter half gets less hot intensity and more emo, though. Park Shin Hye will cry a LOT, you ain't seen nothin' yet. Still I didn't mind because at the beginning, I found her more (albeit harmlessly) annoying when she was happy.

@140: Judi. I think Juri's beautiful. Last Friends is on my list but I'm not in the mood for a sad ending right now.. =( I thought Kimi wa Petto was awesome fun (Matsujun's hugs!! Want!) but Absolute Boyfriend was a load of trollop, I'd steer clear of that one if I were you. Whoever 'you' may be.

@146: Samsooki: Awwww, but it's beautiful! Well, it depends on the kind of emo you get at the end. Titanic was done without being brutal about it like Snow Queen was, sorta like Hong Gil Dong wasn't so brutal about it either. MiSa was pretty brutal but not as bad IMO as Snow Queen. Of course MiSa was severely brutal the whole way through, LOL. With MiSa, I'd rec that you marathon it, I did about 6 eps over 2 days and then the last 4 on the 3rd. With the 6ep rotation I got a TON of emo but also a lot of romance to balance it out.

@ 53, djes

I must also thank you for the luscious ICOMYM eye-candy link. :D

@ 146, Samsooki

Ah...I see....so if I hadn't told you the ending of HGD was beautiful, you wouldn't have watched it...and fallen in bro-love with Kang Ji Hwan...and proceeded to kidnap and torment him, thereby starting the FBI manhunt....and become a thorn in the sides of JB and myself in every OT thereafter....
Silly me.
:P
