Happy Holidays, Ivoire!
How do I pronounce your name? Is it eye-vo-ray? Or simply eee-vor?

Cool name :)

Hello Ricky the royal highness,
So good to hear from you :-) Hope you are enjoying your holidays, your mom's cooking, catching up on dramas you had been dying to watch and enjoying going to your family and relatives' gatherings (I could be wrong but it seems to me that those are the things you mentioned you will be doing during your month off). I also hope that you did well during your exams and that you passed your classes *crossing fingers*

So, Ivoire is French for Ivory and it is the French translation of my middle name which happens to be African. This is a little challenging, but you would pronounce it: ee-voi-r, a little like you would pronounce An-toi-ne (for the 1st name Antoine) if this helps (except you would take the "Ant" out, of course and the "n" out of course as well). (I am struggling with this because I want to get it right and my French-English dictionary is not close by so I can write the phonetic pronuntiation :-(
Let me know if this helped, if and when I can think of something better, I will add to this.

And thanks for the compliment, :-)
P.S.: If memory serves me right, you are Malay and you leave in Malaysia?

Hi JummaB!

0

Hello Ahjummabunny,
Good to hear from you as well. I think JoAnne (below) got it, sound wise. Thank you guys for helping me figure out how to explain how to accurately pronounce Ivoire. Hope you guys are having a great day!

0

Everything is crystal clear, Ivoire!
Yunno, I had a hunch that it was French.

Ahh, yes. I'm having a good time at home. Engorging myself on excellent food and just relaxing! I'll be going to my first party in two days and I'm preparing myself mentally to face nosy aunts.

I am from Malaysia, however, I am not Malay.

I hope that's a legit ethnic background :)

Ricky TRH: Too legit to quit

0

Glad we were able to help, RTRH. That was actually a fun exercise. Glad also to know that you are at home relaxing, you deserve it.
Ah, nosy aunties, I know about those. I hope you will survive those parties, what we do for family huh... :-) Have fun!
Thank you for correcting the assumption I had that you were Malay. So what are you, if I may ask? (I am just curious about that part of the world...). (it will be OK if you don't want to answer that question, however).

0

It was FUN! I had a great time imagining people trying to sound out your name. Hehe.

Lemme just say that I am a hybrid child. My parents (who are biracial themselves) got married and produced cute multiracial children. I've got at least 3 different ethnic blood coursing through my veins. The government simply use the term Sino-Native to describe minorities like me.

0

Thanks RTRH, I learned something new today and I will be going to bed tonight less ignorant :-)
Wow!!! Ethnic and cultural diversity, how rich it makes our world, huh... So if you yourself have children with someone whose ethnic background is as diverse as yours (or at least biracial), the cycle would be continuing huh... How cool.
So, do you actually currently live in Malaysia (and go to school there?) I think it's kind of neat that we can be of different places of the world, and yet because of our love of Kdramas, here we are connecting...

0

I liked the part about "produced cute multiracial children" I will take your word for it :-)

0

My parents just called us "Heinz 57" because we have many different ethnic lineages. I don't even remember how many there are for sure but at least 7 or 8 I can recall. Two from my mom and the big mix is from my dad's side.

Background: Heinz is a company and one of the sauces they make is call 57 because the company makes a lot of different sauces.

0

Let's hear it for the mix!

I am Italian-French Canadian-Portuguese on my mother's side. Depending on which one of those, I'm either second-or third-generation American.

My father was a mix of English-German-Dutch. My cultural upbringing was firmly on the maternal side, LOL, and italian is probably the largest percentage of any single ethnicity.

I married a man who is Hispanic-family has been in Texas since before it was a state and so they have pretensions of grandeur and love to explain that they are more Spanish than Mexican.

Hence I end up with a daughter who has hair the color of a old penny, but skin tending toward olive, and black eyes.

0

Hello MJP,

I can't say that I am as ethnically diverse as some of you, but I will say that I have lived in many parts of the world simply because life turned out that way. I will also say that I have relatives (uncles, aunties and cousins) from different parts of the world as well because of the different intermarriages that took place.
And I will say "Yay" for cultural and ethnic diversity. I mean, just imagine the different kinds of food, music, dramas :-), languages etc... we get to be exposed to...
Thanks for adding your story to the mix. Hope your day is going well :-)
P.S.: Were you the one who had the concert a few weeks ago? (that you were rehearsing for?) And you are the mom of wee MJP, right :-)
(I was a nanny for many, many years and I am the oldest of 6 children and yes, I do love children).

0

Hello JoAnne,

You have a very interesting and diverse ethnic and cultural background indeed, and added to that, your husband's... Thank you for sharing :-) Your daughter is very multiracial, to say the least.

0

@JoAnne:

2Legit, 2Legit 2Quit! Blanking out on who that was, but love the memory :)

0

We are English and Welsh on my mom's side, Czech, German and English on dad's. And, except for the Czechs (my great grandpa), we've been here since before the Revolution. Not much ethnic diversity there. BUT, my Mom grew up on the "wrong side of the tracks" with all of her Mexican friends, and cooks like a Mexican (thanks to her neighbor, Abuelita Nunez), my brother married a Mexican, so we claim Latino, too.

My parents story could be a Kdrama. Dad's family was fairly affluent, mom's was dirt poor. They met when my mom was playing accordian in a dance hall....she was 15 and they'd lied and said she was 18. My dad's mother actually told my mom's mother that my mom wasn't good enough for her son. Grandma hit her back with, "oh really??? I thought it was the other way 'round". Dad's parents didn't even come to the wedding. My grandparents never did reconcile, although they did come tolerate one another eventually.

0

@Sethe - that was MC Hammer! Late '80s

0

Ivoire,

Yes it is I, MJP-eous from Mount Olympus, Super Mom to the Universe! Ba Ha Ha Haaaaaa (Just kidding) :-)

Yes, I did have the concert and completely forgot to have hubby bring the camera, but that was okay because Wee MJP wouldn't sit still so he ended up walking the halls and playing with him. Wee MJP only heard two songs, but MJP Hubby got to watch a bit more. It was songs and a play interspursed together.

Nanny, hmmm, do you have children or did you just get tired of doing the nanny thing?

0

@JoAnne:

MC Hammer... no kidding! He was such a trendsetter in my late high school/early college years... yeah, his pants (I totally had MC Hammer pants) and his dancing had a lasting influence on my generation :)

0

@ MJP,

Hi back! just read your answer and I will be responding later (maybe much later tonight or tomorrow) so please check back. It will take a little while for me to explain how I became a nanny and how taking care of children has played such an important part in my life. I am so glad we connected, I love reading stories about your family, you all seem very loving and close to each other.
Are you also the one who adopted a teenager a few months ago? (Just wondering, it is hard to to keep the names straight on this blog and what happened to whom, especially when one [me] is not always participating).
Talk to you later :-)

0

Its probably too late but me and my mum call ourselves Allen allsorts party bag (basically a bag of mixed lollies)

On mum's side we're maltese, italian, spanish, german, english and scottish. On dad's it's irish, welsh and english.

Thanks for the compliment Plume and Happy Holidays to you as well.
You know, Plume means something in French as well, I will have to look it up in the dictionary to be able to say exactly what it is (said dictionary not at hand right now). It is an instrument used to write, like a pen, that you dip in ink to write. It was used back in the old, old days when the pen had not been invented yet, I guess.

It means "feather"', that's why I picked it ;). Reminds me of a lyric from Radiohead's 'Creep': "You float like a feather/ In a beautiful world...".

Yes, they used to write with it back in those days, so I also think of that when I hear the word.

Hello Plume,
Good to hear from you! Just wanted to let you know that I will be back to write later, as I just got invited to a Christmas dinner (I live in California, so think about the time difference, it is 12:45pm here). I need to go get ready :-). And you are right, "Plume" does mean feather.
Talk to you later, I hope. How is the weather in Romania now? I have always found the Romanian language to sound a little like Italian :-) Do you think so...?

0

Hello Ivoire,

It's Christmas Day here, time for me to relax... :)
Romanian sounds like a strange mix of Italian with French, Latin and Slavic elements. But I'm always amazed how well the foreigners who live or study here speak it, really.

Weather here is typical for central/eastern Europe - winters are cold, sometimes we have lots of snow, sometimes not s much. I don't know how many degrees are now outside, but I guess a bit below zero.

So you're a Californian gal? I see lots of west coast people here on the forum :).,

0

Hello Shel and Plume,

Turns out my dinner invitation was actually for today, Christmas day, as opposed to yesterday, Christmas Eve. So I do have to go get ready (again :-)) so I won't be late (I am one of those people who take a long time to get ready, because there are so many things I have to do beforehand...), so again, I will come back and write more later.
Plume, yes now, I am a Californian gal, after having been a Minnesotan gal for 12 years. I know about the cold, having spent 12 years in MN and I don't miss it at all :-) now that I live in CA. Hope you are enjoying your relaxing time today. I am going to spend some time with a family, their two young children (yay!!!) and I think some of their in-laws. Dinner will be good, I am sure. I am looking forward to it. OK, time for me to go make myself pretty, get the presents ready and iron my African dress (I need to figure out which one to wear, and find the shoes and bag that will go with the dress. Got to accessorize :-)
Will be back later, not sure when later, but I will be back :-)
P.S. I am so in love with Bobby Kim who sings on the OST of Man of Honor and Spy Myung Wol. He has such a great voice. I also like Junsu and Jeajong who sings on the OST of Protect the Boss and SungKyunkwan Scandal (Might have mispelled the 1st name, hard to get it right without looking at the spelling). I actually like a lot of Korean singers I am discovering, just don't have the time to list them all right now.
Off to getting ready...

Happy holiday weekend! I'm 1/2 New York City immigrant Italian, 1/4 Irish, and 1/4 Lithuanian. That means I love to drink, but then start breaking out into spontaneous song! Each of my siblings was born in a different country (I was born in Iceland), but pretty much grew up in Virginia.

I missed the Roman nose side of the genetic lottery, but missed out on the olive skin too, so I mostly look northern European. My hair started turning white at 18, which strangely enough didn't happen to my swarthy siblings.

Anyways, it's always great to see the differences between us kdrama fanatics! I will say the strangest thing is that, when I read the entries, all I picture are a bunch of Americans typing on their ThinkPads while watching CBS news - the English here is great! I feel sad that my culture really doesn't push to learn other languages the way it should.

First of all, Iceland! That's fantastic! I've heard that's an incredibly beautiful country to visit.

Second... CBS???? Not sure what to make of that... you imagine everyone here is an American who watches CBS? Let me tell you (as an American, although currently an ex-pat), I think that these days, anyone who's into the news chooses a side and then watches the channel that corresponds to their viewpoint. (And, um, I don't know that much about it, but if I had to peg CBS, I'd call it left-leaning.)

I haven't watched US television for some years now, but when I did, I would have said CBS was right-leaning; sort of like US News & World Report, appealing to one's conservative grandparents. But maybe they've gone left in the intervening years.

This might sound a little crazy, but I fell in love with Lithuania and Lithuanians when I read Tom Clancy's book "The Hunt for Red October," way back in... I don't even know... the late 80s or early 90s... The defector Soviet captain of the highly techonogical nuclear sub was Lithuanian (Marko Ramius) and I developed a huge crush on him. I was dismayed beyond belief when Sean Connery was cast to play him in the film version of the novel, cause he was so far from the sexy dude my young self pictured as the daring rogue captain.

0

Interestingly, practically every last name in Lithuania ends with either "is" or "us". Even the capitol is Vilnius. Sometimes, people think my last name is Greek just because it ends in "is", which I think is funny because I am far from Mediterranean-looking.

Go figure.

Iceland is indeed an awesome place. Although I haven't been back in several decades, I'd like to visit it. The last name on my Icelandic birth certificate is "Williamsdottir" because that's my father's first name. I'm a Navy brat, though, so my primary birth certificate is American.

A Greek friend once told me that Greek names ending with '-is' originate from Krete Island, and that is the most beautiful place in Greece. :) The few Lithuanians I met were charming but sadly I don't remember any name.

I'm in Romania now and the TV stations I watch have funny names like "Antena", "Realitatea", "Euforia", "Romantica". When I was a teen I used to like MTV, first the British one and then the Romanian version. I also liked VH1 but I don't really know to which country it belonged. As for American TV channels, I think we only have CNN here, on cable, sometimes I watch that one too (if there is some big event happening and I want fresh information from the source).

0

I'm charmed at the 'charming', but scared that CNN is your American representation.... :-)

A friend spent two years in Romania with the Peace Corp and loved it. Every Christmas, she makes some type of hot mulled wine she learned over there is very delicious.

0

Ah the winter wine :) the whole central Europe makes that kind of hot red spicy wine in winter, I assume it originates from Germany.

Actually I see more American reality shows than CNN and THAT is scary. I began to think at some point that people in L.A. and Texas really like glamourous glitzy blingy trash, but then I saw people complaining on various forums that not everyone there is like that and those shows affect their image.

To tell the truth, the represention I have on U.S. is based mainly on what the Hollywood and media show us, the Eastern people. I don't know how accurate could that be.

0

It's like watching the KDrama and assuming that everyone who gets married has hateful in-laws, and can only get drunk on soju in an outside tent on a blue chair.

Reality is too boring for television, no matter what country. I would look at my family as being typical:
- parents married 55 years with 4 childen
- oldest sister married to a minister with 3 children
- second sister married to a firefighter with 2 children, she is a director at the local children's hospital
- brother married to a school teacher with 3 children, he is a firefighter
- Me, the youngest, single and living in a 1300 sq foot house on 1/4 acre lot, paying the mortgage, driving a Hyundai and holding down two jobs (police department and hospital) and volunteering about 800 hours a year.

My mother nags that I need to be married and eat better.
My dad and I play golf together and share Harlequin romance books.
My brother whines when I ask him for assistance but ultimately does help me, especially with the parents.
My oldest sister pities me for not having a family.
My second sister and I meet twice a month for either Mexican or Japanese food, pedicures, and alcohol.

Sometimes we yell at each other, but no hair-pulling, punching, object breaking, or any other violence.

Like I said, pretty typical and boring.

4. Yoon Shi Yoon
5. Song Joong-ki
6. Yoo Ah-in
7. Kim So Hyun
8. Joo Won
9. Ji Jang Wook
10. JaeJoong

JoAnne, it's part fantasy like the manga, so you'll get a lot of far out scenes like she's yelling and people actually hear her voice reverberating across the walls. It's very similar to the manga. My advice is not to watch the anime/read the manga. This spoils the fun. I watched PK the anime first and the show kept so close to the anime I could tell what was coming.

It is tiring to watch those exaggerated expressions and listen to the over the top screeching. Ivy Chen is exhausting me. And it's only Ep 1. Sigh. Much as I love Siwon, I am unsure whether I can take the dramatics much longer. And Siwon is speaking in a strange dubbed voice. And his hair is swept back. The Ren of the manga had long dark flowing locks. I had imagined Siwon looking like that.

JoAnne, you are right. Viola lives and breathes Siwon. She is not here yet because she is busy baking Gingerbread Siwon cookies in her oven. She has also made paper cut-outs of Siwon's abs and they are hanging in her Christmas tree shaped to look like, yes, Siwon's abs.

Don't forget Happy Festivus... for the Rest of Us. :)

Happy Friday, Fellow Beaners!! ♫ It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas… ♫ Especially over here at Casa de CherKell, where it looks more like Christmas threw up in my living room. Stuff is EVERYWHERE!! When I moved into my new place two years ago, I made sure that I had separate buckets for all my holiday stuff. 4 buckets full of Christmas Goodies later… and I still need to get all this stuff up and decorated by tomorrow, when the onslaught of visitors start passing through. Argh. Good thing that Mnet has decided to run a whole bunch of Christmas MVs to keep me in the Holiday Mood™-- the ones from the early ‘90s are freakin’ hi-larious!!

Wow, what a jam-packed week this turned out to be – the holidays are in full swing, work is settling down into a dull roar, the second half of the T-ara “Cry Cry/Lovey Dovey” MV premieres late tonight (more evil JCW!! squeee!!!), and the “Bachelor’s Vegetable Store” drama premiered on Wednesday… and it feels like that’s all I eat, sleep and dream about! (For those of you saying 'what's new about that?', shush now. :) ) Waking up at 3:30 AM two days a week might be a stretch to watch the livestream, so I may dial that back as the Show continues. I didn’t realize how much work it was going to be monitoring a tiny little drama forum page, so I have much sympathy for you guys who do this day-in-and-out with Dramabeans and other sites. My raw and cramping typing fingers salute you!! (BTW, My first two mini-recaps on the RAWs are up on Soompi if you want to make fun of my feeble attempts: http://tinyurl.com/7wop9v8. Don't laugh *too* hard...)

And on that note, I state with a heavy heart that I just learned Thundie is going to hang up her Blogging Hat. I hadn’t had a chance to visit over there in a little over a week, and when I logged in last night to check in, she had a new update posted (you can find it here: http://tinyurl.com/77ss6az). It sounds like the site is not going away, but that she’s taking a self-imposed breather. Anyway, stroll over and say hi while you have the chance!! Hugs to our wonderful Thundie… you will be missed, sweetie. ::sadface::

Anyway, I hope my fellow readers will have a peaceful Holiday and a restful New Year with lots more events to squeeeeeeeee! over in 2012, especially more of this: http://tinyurl.com/6s96njd. Gotta head into work for a half-day today, so I’ll be back on later. Annyeong for now!

Thing is, women wear bras for lift and definition and all that, and men presumably don't want that for their man-boobs... what would be needed is more of a man-girdle for the chest area -- and particularly one that'd be padded/defined to give the impression of chest/abdominal muscles.

0

That's what Kramer's manzeer was - it looked kinda like an Edwardian bodice cincher and was 3/4 length. It was hysterical seeing George's father (J. Stiller) modeling it.

I'm just reading and cracking up from old memories that you have brought up.

Seinfeld was one of the most reliably funny shows ever... and Festivus -- the feats of strength, the airing of grievances... (can't remember what else, and too lazy to look it up)... just, SO funny!

I may catch up once the adult cast shows up in the veggie field, gets all dirty and requires showers.

Happy holidays to everyone! This website's been such a pleasant thing for me this year (Newbie!), I can't help but want everyone here to be happy!
Hope everyone's weekend is going great! (Read: A familial grinch has stolen my Christmas weekend. Oh well. It's like I'm stuck in a very bad Christmas family dramedy. Or a very good one.)

That's kind of a bummer, but if you have a streak of dark humor, it could make for some good inside laughs.

Big family gatherings wear me out because we are all a bit cuh-ray-zee...so this year my mom, bro and I are taking a break from the big to do and doing a Christmas picnic in the living room and watching bollywood movies until we scream for mercy and also finishing up my bro's college apps. Thank goodness for college apps, without them we could never bow out gracefully from hosting a big dinner ;P

I got the best of the best.

One of my Greek friends invited me for Christmas dinner, so I can have all the fun of a big, noisy get together (and her mom makes the best tiropita!), then leave when it gets too overwhelming and settle back to my nice quiet house.

Last year it was the nearby Chinese buffet with the 'rents, but this year they've opted to stay south and not come back to Virginia for the holidays. Which is funny because it's warmer here than Florida.

Anyways, happy holidays to y'all and your families!

I have to say, this was a satisfying year for me drama wise. ..CH, WBDS, TWDR, FBRS, DH, MTF, BL, HK3, 49days.....

Anyone out there watching Padam Padam? So far, so good IMO. I was hooked right away.

Padam Padam got me within about thirty seconds. I LOVES IT! I still have to catch up on this weeks episodes, but the first four have been fantastic. I think Kim Bum has greatly improved, even if there is still a smidge of room for improvement (every so often I catch him "blue steel"-ing when Kook-Soo is supposed to be looking thoughtful), and any scene between him and Kang Chil or him and Kang Chil's mom are gold. I was a little less interested in the veternarian at first, too, but now that she's warming up a little to Kang Chil, she seems a little less selfish and one-dimensional.

Absolutely adore Padam Padam. Completely hooked too. I actually prefer the relationships between Kangchil, Gook Soo and Kan Chils mum rather then the main pairing, although the OTP are growing on me. Also how pretty is Kim bum? And how awesome is Jung Woo Sung shirtless and his crazy-laughing? They are both so oddly endearing.

The last drama that drove me this nuts was Secret Garden and that was ages ago(Lol!), it is awesome to have this feeling again and I just hope the drama will keep getting better and better. So far it keeps making me want more and more, and its driving me crazy to wait for the next episode.

Padam Padam was the sound of MY heart last night as they rode the train back from the zoo.

Or was it just me who felt like they could actually see sparks coming off those two? Because if I was in her shoes...I would not have been able to breathe. I was holding my breath just WATCHING them. The hands on the window? The way he looks at her?

Well. Half the time Kang Chil looks nuts. But the other half of the time... Let's just say there is something about him..his intensity, maybe? That just screams sexy to me. It isn't the way he looks. It's something intangible. But come on, I can't be the only one?

AArgh! I wanna watch it so bad. But, I'm at the big, crazy family gathering and there are a dozen little rugrats to play with to keep my "favorite auntie" status, and three new babies that need to be rocked and told who their "favorite auntie" is. It's a tough competition with sister #3, but one of the babies is hers, so that makes it easier for me to win that one, at least.

I'm still freaked out by the ending of Padam #4, so I'm very anxious to watch it. Maybe tonite when the smoke clears and all the little people are in bed. And maybe the big people, too, lol.

That was a stroke of directorial genius. I'm fastening my seatbelt because this is gonna be one intense roller-coaster ride, but there's no turning back now. The drama, just like its male protagonist, is intense and utterly captivating-- so sweet and tender one moment, so fierce the next. Gah!

No JoAnne, you're not the only one. In fact, i'm healing the wound of my Me Too Flower divorce by Padam. For me Kang Chil is the Desire / Love in its purest form. And seeing that big cautious teddy bear giving a butterfly kiss ... I'm melting like an ice cream abandoned under the Florida sun. It's just so funny how small the actress look beside him : I'm sure it was one of the reasons she was engaged.

Mystisith,
"For me Kang Chil is the Desire / Love in its purest form." Bingo! I would qualify it like this: 'masculine desire/love in it's purest form'. Padam Padam caught me off guard and hooked me in immediately. The writing and acting is excellent, drilling deep into the central characters and portraying such a large breath of human characteristics and emotions. Everything about Kang Chil is writ large, from his intellect to his anger, his desire to his tenderness, his innocence to his grit. There are large forces at work in him, and I can't help but root for him to align them and fulfill his potential.

He does look nuts half the time.... It's something with his eyes. The way he suddenly stares at things/people with this intense something. It struck me when I was watching episode 5 (still have to watch episode 6)! It's almost scary actually.

0
5
reply

Required fields are marked *

He opens them really wide, the way bad actors do when they want to express surprise - except he's not expressing surprise NOR is he a bad actor. With him, that look is more of an aggressive 'what are you going to do about it, huh, huh, huh' thing, or a 'yeah, so' thing. In any event...I have gone from looking at the stills and thinking - is this person supposed to be mentally challenged? to watching episode 5 (still have 6 to go, yay and then a WEEK of anxious waiting, boo) and thinking - this man is INCREDIBLY sexy and I wanna do naughty things in the woodpile with him.

0
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think he's supposed to be at the mental age he went to prison at (or almost). I'm not sure if that quite makes sense (even if prison is surely an alternative universe of a whole different sort, you'd at least mentally age a bit... I would think. And harden up and mature through some of the tough experiences you encounter there, no?).

I do buy that he just hasn't experienced a lot of things - I mean, let's go 16 years back in time and subtract all the things we have now that we didn't have back then...

0

I see that in him too but I think he takes 'wide-eyed innocence' too literally in that case! But he does have a certain simple, first-time-for-this, charming approach to almost everything. The thing is - how many 19 year olds do you know who would respond to the world that way, anyway? I think it's just him, his kind of personality is to be appreciative and curious and straightforward. He definitely calls bullshit when he sees it, and he takes everything so literally.

0

True, he's a very innocent/unusual 19-year old.

There is definitely something that's just-the-way-his-personality-is, rather than never having had the chance to grow up...

0

So I'm jumping in this conversation now that I've watched it. I noticed the wide eyes, but I think its how his face delivers expressions.

As for him, he may be one of my favorite characters because of all of the character paradoxes he embodies. He is SO disillusioned and so concerned with living one day at a time, that everything outside that realm is nonexistent. You insult him, he'll beat you. You make him smile, he'll laugh. He wants to kiss you, you get kissed. The only thing that brings him out of this is love, that powerful emotion that turns EVERYONE upside down. Even that keeps hurting him over and over again.

But he's had a lot of things against him so coming out of that one day at a time mentality will be hard for him.

I'm not sure about the mental age thing. I think part of that is true. But he DID live in prison and that's a hard life. He grew up I think, just not like most people who have their youths. While we were adjusting in the world, he was adjusting in terms of survival and 'preparing' for a future that may or may not come.

0

I'm happy to see that our usual contingent is watching Padam Padam - it's funny how often our tastes are so similar in the dramas we get hooked on. We have good taste, ladies!

I'm up to ep 6 - watched it raw, and now DramaFever has the subs up.

JWS is doing such a good job with the Kang Chil character. It's the first time I've seen such an intensity to his acting.

When the promos began for PP, several of us likened his character to a Forrest Gump. It was hard to tell if he was mentally challenged or just had a really bad haircut and a weird expression.
My conclusion at this point is that the intensity derives from the fact that Kang Chil's socially formative years were spent behind bars, so he has almost no social skills and certainly no knowledge of how to approach or interact with the female species. When he's with our lady Vet, it's like he's looking at an alien, giving her those close-up, intense big-eyed stares - the dude doesn't have a clue about personal space.
He just hungers for contact, emotional and physical. Everything is a knee-jerk reaction - he has no social "filters", his emotions are right on the surface and he reacts accordingly, whether it's rage or longing, laughing or regret. It's instant and it's on the edge at all times.

The concern I have at this point is that as volatile as he is, that's how withdrawn and non-reactive I see HJM's character being. I think she's coming across as a bit boring? (I question it because I'm really not too sure how I feel about her acting, yet).

And as for Bummie?! Woot!! Boy can do no wrong (for me) - I just want to tackle him and force-feed him a sandwich. His new thinness really shows in his face. He's lost those cheeks I like to pinch or kiss. This is the role he's been waiting for and he's doing a terrific job.

I agree 100% with what you wrote. I am falling in love with Kang Chil's intensity, I want to laugh when he laughs, I feel sadness when he is sad and on the verge of tears, his expressions seem so raw and real. I love the mom and son moments even though most of the time they are not entirely happy moments, to me they seem so nostalgic. I can clearly see how much his mother loves him, how happy she is to have him with her, even if he does not believe it. I love our skinny little angel, he looks so cute, loyal and Innocent. The only weak link would be our vet lady , she just seems so bland. I think the other female lady with the kid its a much better contender for Kang Chil, she has helped him so much so far and does not judges him nor belittles him.

I hope you all can forgive my poor English grammar, but I hope its understandable enough, I just wanted to express how much I am falling in love with this drama
Merry Christmas!!!!!

I don't see Ji Na as bland, I see her as reserved and extremely cautious. I just finished Episode 6 (which was REALLY GOOD) and I hadn't realized that she actually did care about 'I don't believe in marriage' guy so there's that issue to work through, plus I think with her father being SUCH a volatile (and violent) man, she would have some fears about the intensity that Kang Chil displays.

Bummie...is anyone wondering if maybe he's the one that we'll lose?

0

Required fields are marked *

Good point. Kang Chil and Ji Na are such emotional polar opposites that seeing them together in a scene underscores just how opposite they are - each makes the other seem even more extreme. He yells - she gets quieter. It's a good thing that their quiet scenes involving simple conversation conveys the sense of them becoming OTP.

I really dislike Mr.Can'tCommitToMarriage. I wonder why she hasn't kicked him to the curb - wasn't it clear that he was seeing other women? Is our Vet a love doormat? She seems to have a backbone of independent steel, so what gives?

I'm gonna take it as a given that sweet Bummie is headed for the Pearly Gates. I mean, he IS growing a pair of wings - it'd be tough finding a button-down shirt for him - he can't live in a wife-beater tee for the rest of his life.
I would imagine that Kang Chil's third miracle will involve a sacrifice - one that Bummie makes.
:)

Happy OT thread :)

I am officially in love with What's Up! It's exactly the kind of Fame-esque musical drama I've been looking for. I'm invested in the main characters for sure, the only character I would like to see some more backstory on Chaeyoung. I get that she's struggling to keep herself relevant as an actress and take her career and skills to another level, but I just haven't had that moment yet where I can see past her outside shell to the person under it all...if that makes any sense. And I really don't want her to fall into that category of "catty girl I have to hate".

Other than that I was sad to see FBRS go, but I was completely satisfied with the ending. Thank goodness there's an abundance of flower boy shows blooming into next year otherwise I would have serious withdrawal symptoms.

Happy Christmas in advance to those who celebrate and to those who don't hope your weekend is full of peace, love and k-drama!

What's Up is good - I've been watching it over on EpDrama and waiting impatiently for subs, and have rewatched the first 3 episodes on DramaFever just because it's better video quality...that's how much I'm liking it. A whole slew of new actors for me...and the feel is very American, don't you think? Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing on the whole, just noticeably different from what I've experienced KDrama-wise so far.

The subs for the show are really hard to come by though and are taking forever. I'm too impatient and I had to watch the 4th episode raw.

I don't really care about Chae Young right now probably because the drama hasn't given me a lot of reason too. I am really excited though about the impending conflict with Jae Hun and Tae Hee regarding her father's death.

OMG, talk about sweating bullets that you picked the best pieces out of your repertoire, and praying that the accompanist the Professor allocated to you would be competent... or at least show up. At one of my senior year voice recitals, the gal assigned to play for me got drunk at lunchtime and went missing for three days thereafter. Needless to say, my grade was delayed that semester. Ah, good times... NOT. :)

Anyway, good luck to all of those stuck hunkering down with your studies over the holidays! FIGHTING!!!

I'm so glad there is someone else who went through music school. What did you think of Dream High in that respect? Especially the sight reading, composition class (explaining aaba form or smg like it) and explanations of perfect pitch. I was rofl.

I've got my PhD upgrade coming up after the holidays myself, which in the UK system is the only official requirement you have to fulfil as a PhD student (other than dissertation defense itself).

Spending the hold revising the chapter I need to submit for it (just under 20,000 words, plus documents like a time plan, outline of chapters, etc.) and mentally preparing for the one-hour interview session. I'll have three people grilling me, which is a little scary. :-(

He was working as a tutor at the Bartlett (the school of architecture at my university... maybe you've heard of it)... he was working INSANE hours but was doing the most interesting stuff. Totally made me look at architecture in a different way, so I'm in awe of you doing an MA in it! Such hard work, so kudos to you.

Yep! Long live the plunger!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best scenes ever!!!!

BTW, for those who still are short of few presents, a plunger is a fantastic gift for some 2-5 yrs-old boys. Believe me, they even sleep with them and sneak some extra plungers in the shopping basket when you are not looking! (because that size we don't have yet, mommy...)

Daughter loves bubble tea, which around here you can only get in Providence...so when my friend went to Shanghai for the summer I asked her to get some of the tapioca pearls because they're different than the tapioca I can buy here.

Turns out it's not a mainland thing at all, but she did manage to find some and bring it back - I proudly presented to daughter, who took it off to school with her and she and friends proceeded to BURN THE LOT OF IT...so, no bubble tea for anyone!

Why would she do that?

0

It wasn't on purpose, Ricky - you get a bunch of hyper teens in a room goofing off while they're supposed to be cooking something they've never cooked before, and they do it in a cheap pot on an unfamiliar stove...it's bound to happen. Still, I was sad. That package was carefully sourced and lovingly transported to Boston all the way from China, all to end as tarry goop in a beat up old pan in some boy's filthy kitchen.

0

I see. Why would they cook those tapioca pearls in the first place? Were they trying to heat it up or something?

0

the instructions said to?

0

The instructions said to? Maybe the step of putting them in water to cook them in was missing?

0

LOL - they did use some water! They just let it go too long.

0

JoAnne, if you have any Asian market over there you should be able to find them. I've seen them in pretty much every Asian matket I've been in the States. You can find them online too.
I love Bubble tea

0

Never made it. And there are several great Asian markets. But what exactly is bubble tea?

0

@Shukmeister, imagine a kind of smoothy with sweet tapioca balls in the bottem you have to drink with an estra thick straw

Hi everyone and happy OT Friday!

I've been watching the original Unstoppable High Kick for the past few weeks and totally understand why it is was popular. I miss Jung Il Woo in his shaggy black hair.

I also LOVE What's Up and am really sad that subbing is going so slow for that show. I want MOAR!

On a random side note, has anyone else noticed that Korean actresses trend to pierce their ears at the very bottom of their earlobes (like Kim Tae Hee in IRIS)? Anyone know if that is just fashionable in Korea these daya or something more?

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah and Happy Happy OT Day!

I hear that The Musical is ending early, and all I can muster is a "thank you drama gods!" At this point, it feels like a mercy killing. What happened to the drama that was so much fun in the first episode? I caved and watched episode 14 against my better judgment. Not as awful as its been, but still far away from the first episode, which had that adorable imagined musical sequence in Eun Bi's med school class.

Instead I'm focusing on the awesome that will be January k-dramas - The Moon that Embraces the Sun (aka MORE JUNG IL WOO FTW!) and History of the Salaryman. I showed the music video for the latter drama to one of my friends, who is a k-drama ignoramus, and even she is now intrigued! Yay, another potential convert! I have done my good Christmas deed for the year.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2hAa64vYxU&feature=g-all-f&context=G2f1a8f9FAAAAAAAANAA

I came across this youtube video this week and it was posted on December 10, 2011. I couldn't make out the language and I wonder if it's Vietnamese. I am curious as to when this happened, because the video was posted recently, but Hyun Bin doesn't have an army hair cut, so methinks, this was taken before he went in? (and then I got more curious, how early before he went to the marines?)
I wondered, before Secret Garden? Because personally I would have a hard time believing that this was after Secret Garden because he was a lot thinner then, and his face even looked different (besides, he was so busy shooting CFs, going to Berlin for the festival, and doing the reading for the documentary on Africa and all the other things he had to do before he left. The man was so busy, he apparently didn't have time to spend with his friends before he left).
In any case, I find it nice to see Hyun Bin just being a good sport, being shy and just being himself and having fun. I am also curious as to where this might have been taken since the crowd seems diverse (ethnically) and they don't seem to treat him like a star (he's just one of the people there, having fun). He also looked comfortable when he leaned on the guy to his left, laughing... )
I thought maybe somewhere in Asia but which country? And then there's the whole Hokey Pokey dance at the end and the dress the 1st lady who danced wore and it looks like the kind of dresses [fabric and print?] women wear in Hawai? (and I know I'm probably off base?)
I know I am overthinking this, but I am just so curious :-)
What do you guys think? Maybe some of you have come across this video as well?
Have a great day and a great weekend!!!!
P.S.: This is what can happen when someone has some free time on an early Friday morning :-)

Hello ck10z, and thanks for your reply. I hope that some of the people from the JD crowd will help translate it and so now at least I know it's Japanese, thank you!
You know, I really can't say where he was, because there are only 2 comments posted on the youtube page of that video and they don't say much. The person who posted it didn't give any information that would remotely help identify where they were, which made me curious, because people usually give the name of the country (at least), or a town or something to help identify the event or place. And now that you said it, the accent is American...
Oh well, thanks again!

Hope everyone will have a safe and happy holiday! I'm sad that tree with deep roots ended. I didn't know that I would of fall in love with a drama about the alphabet. The acting was all great by all the actresses. Han Seok Kyu is probably going to win the Daesung and he totally deserves it.

Isn't it great to see actors like Han Seok Kyu and Shin Ha Kyun from Brain acting in dramas again? Now if only Won Bin and Jang Dong Gun get back to acting in tv dramas again ill be a happy camper.

I'm enjoying Padam Padam also with Jung woo sung and Kim Bum looks very handsome but so skinny. I'm not sure how the storyline is going to play out but so far I'm liking what I see. Have a very Merry Christmas everyone.

Happy Holidays Everyone!!!!
Quite happy this year - I have a new job (although they are multiple freelances) and it's 100000000000x better than the one I just quit!! What a PLEASURE!

Is anyone watching FERMENTATION FAMILY? I am enjoying that very much. The family's perkiness speaks to me because I'm usually a pessimist, and their probably non-existent-family-in-real-life makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. How long the show is going for? I can't find the number online. I hope it's not too long. I don't want some crazy makjang happening!! And the kimchi looks SO FRIGGIN GOOD!!!! Someone need to open a kimchi spot in K-town in NYC PRONTO!!

I wonder.. is there an equivalent word for "makjang" in chinese??

Random note... kimchi was named one of the 5 healthiest foods in the world by Health magazine and assorted other health-related websites. (I happened to look that up cause when I went out for lunch today, I was just devouring the kimchi, and so I naturally wondered if it was high in some vitamins or minerals I was lacking/craving.)

I watched the "Kimchi Roa" episodes of 2D1N, and they said something about kimchi helping with weight loss. Then they went on to make kimchi with persimmons, blue crabs, pollack, oysters, etc. and I'm thinking "and it's still helps you lose weight??"

Unfortunately, the only kind my local (and just about only) Korean restaurant makes is traditional Napa cabbage / fish sauce, and cucumber. Still, those two, along with picked daikon radish and black beans, are my favorite side dishes.

I love Fermentation Family! The first episode was sort of ridiculous and Song Il Gook/Ko Ho Tae's scenes made me think of Dokko Jin (from best love)'s Fighter movie. But once we get past some of the clunky initial setup, I was in love. The drama feels like a cross between J-drama and a Hallmark movie with a pinch of kdrama goodness to give it some drama. It really is a feel-good drama. And of course, there is all that food porn. My mouth waters during each episode!

I'm currently watching "Color of Woman", mostly to see Jae Hee post-military. His smile is so infectious! It's been hard to find the episodes online, though viki is finally posting them after an on-again, off-again thing.

I try to watch at least one or two dramas that are completed with available subs to stop some of the frustration of waiting for the subs to come out. I just finished "Black & White"", a Taiwanese police procedural from 2010 that I watched on recommendation from a OT'er. I highly recommend it if you like good cop / bad cop series with a snazzy soundtrack and some really good villains.

The next older one I'm going to look at is White Christmas.

Anyways, with PdPd, CofW, and Ojakgyo Bros for my Korean fix, and Ring Bell Twice for my TW needs, that should hopefully tide me over until Moon Embraces comes out (yea! More JIW!!)

Finally making it to the early hours of the open thread since I'm on vacation! So many manga and dramas to catch up on (and some work too). I'm behind on Tree With Deep Roots, Office Girls, and Color of Woman, which are taking a backseat to Me Too Flower and Fermentation Family.

And does anyone know the ending of The Empress (did it end already?) and want to share? I gave up on the drama and been just fast-forwarding through the last couple of episodes. For a supposedly short drama, it was moving at the pace of a 40-episode series. I had believed it to be sort of a revenge drama, but the revenge doesn't really feature that prominently.

********************** Christmas 2011, a Fantasy Tale *************************

- Warning : Here is a silly attempt of mine to see if I could use all the titles of the dramas I watched this year in a little story. I apologize in advance since the Thing escaped her creator somehow and is totally out of control by now : Fluffy and Regressive and Parodic : Read at your own risk. Typo and English mistakes are mine. Dedicated to Javabeans and Girlfriday, to all Dramabeans faithful contributors and readers. And to all the Vampire Prosecutor fans of the world. :)

Once upon a time in a faraway country, the Warrior Baek Dong Soo, a hero of the nation, ascertained that you have to Dream High in order to obtain The Great Gift. I was certainly walking in his foot steps when I woke up early that day. I was full of fighting spirit and thought i definitely Needed Romance in my Secret Garden. Let’s accept the truth : I’m not a Baby Faced Beauty, nor a Brain. To find The Greatest Love, I would bet on the Midas touch. An oppa I knew who had a single sided crush on me ( too bad he was a chronic broke artist ) had given me an invitation for the “ My Princess “ Event : An Hairshow settled by the ridiculously rich Ojakgyo Brothers Company. At first I found the evening boring to death, no big fish under that sea. Only the charming mustached bartender who managed to put a smile on my face. He was wearing a classy grey shining jacket and on the back you could read :

Gentlemen : Wine, Blood or Tears : The choice is yours.
How many cups allowed if you want to drive home safely ?
Don’t ask me. I hate maths, they solve nothing. Anyway, drink with moderation.
Ladies : If you meet the perfect guy, remember appearances can be deceptive. Probably just a jerk or a psycho.

I decided he was a nice guy. I pondered that maybe he was my soul mate : You know, I’m more a literary kind of girl, so. But no. I had to stick to my original plan. What I waited for was the party. And damn, i would not end empty-handed !

Just when I reached the final stage of despair, a stunning handsome man approached and asked me for a slow dance. Well, actually he didn’t ask me : He just grabbed my hand and dragged me to the dance floor. The orchestra was playing a song called The Musical. But I hardly remember it because I was hypnotized by my very sticky partner who lost no time in introductions. He immediately started joking with me, asking me to guess what was his job : I replied using his mocking tone and gave it a try :

“ City Hunter maybe ? “. He laughed heartedly and commented “ quite close “. He clarified he was a prosecutor, a Vampire Prosecutor to be precise. Sure. And my name is Myung Wol and I’m a Spy. Lie To Me man, or as they say “ bite me “. Yet he took me by surprise and pressed my ear against his wide chiseled chest :

“ Can You Hear My Heart ? “

Fact is, i could not. Not because it wasn’t beating properly, but because MINE was pounding loudly : Padam, Padam… The Romance Town dream was turning into a nightmare. That bartender must have been a psychic, I felt truly unlucky !

“ Don’t worry : Today i’m here to Protect The Boss, not for dinner. I promise. Moreover, i’m a Man of Honor. Consuming my dancing partner would be quite rude don’t you think ? “

Glad to hear that, cutie. Now, the rhetoric question : “ Why me ? “

“ Because I like the Scent of a Woman that is not covered by treacherous expensive perfume and because you’re the only one meeting this standard tonight. “

So sweet. I’m not supposed to feel offended right ? Palli, palli, find something to say.

“ Ah ! How many girls or meals or whatever did you pick up with that line ? Sorry to tell you Ahjussi, but it won’t work with me. By the way, to return the courtesy, you also smell good . “

“ I hope so. I’m a Flower Too after all… “

He studied my face for a long time and I stared at him all the same : Birdie Buddy, you’re not the master at poker face, i know this game as well. Just when I thought he had given up, he dropped his bomb :

“ You see, I’m not telling you about my whole life, but this year has been particularly exhausting and nerve wrecking for me. I just come to realize i need vacations and fresh air. How about i rest at your place for let’s say … 49 Days ? And 49 nights also, that goes without saying. “

Huh !, Jeez, WTH, Dear Poseidon !, ???, [enumeration still in construction, thank you for your understanding ]

“ Why 49 days ? Why not 10 or 100 or 358 if I may ask ?“

“ That question. But because it’s my lucky number of course ! Now, think about it : I’m sure we can reach an agreement in which you Can’t Lose “.

The situation was getting out of hand and i urgently needed to improvise a Counterattack : 3 High Kicks should be enough to get rid of him, then a good run ! mmm... Wait… No. I’m Short Legged on high heels and the client looks like he knows some close combat techniques. How i knew that ? Because he flew me effortlessly all over the place while leading the dance. And since my hands seized his back and shoulder appreciatively. And damn it ! I just know what i’m talking about OK ?

I decided to go for the truth. So absurd and preposterous that it could only work :

“ Well … If you can stand unruly kids, horse dung and remote old houses without central heating nor internet connection, my place as you say is at your disposal : It’s an orphanage called Paradise Ranch on Jeju do.

Mwuaaahaha !! It’s a win, i’m sure of it ! A man clothed in pricy tuxedo and who uses eyeliner can only politely decline and runaway no ?? NO. Fatal mistake. The fateful consent was soon notified by a hot steamy kiss that left me begging for air, stuck in the middle of a dumbfounded audience. But worst was yet to come. As if it wasn’t enough, he promised me Mooaarr : A Thousand Kisses would follow. Then he swore by the Gods he was a true Manny when it came to children. That’s what he said. Now who am I to resist embodied perfection professing such sweet words ? I'm just me i suppose.

**Epilogue : Few days later, our first official date took place at the Flower Boy Ramyun Shop : A cheap, popular, and crowded restaurant. Perfect to avoid an unfortunate misunderstanding about who eats what. He ordered a glass of water while I asked for the spiciest ramyun recipe : I foolishly believed that if my taste buds were distracted by fire I could ignore the entrancing vision placed in front of me. That’s the theory. The fact is, my dreamy prosecutor kept his little infuriating sexy smirk during the whole meal, observing how I stuffed enormous portions of ramyun in my mouth : Must be exotic for someone who sips his meals I guess.
For my defense, when I’m stressed I eat a lot, and I was deadly anxious at that time.

“ Harashi, it looks like You’ve Fallen For Me head over heels… “

???!!!!!!!! Did i hear what i think i heard ?

Now, try to guess : ① Did I choke on my food ? ② Did I throw my orange juice at his face ? ③ Did I kick him under the table ?

Thanks a lot Jomo ! Yeah. Crazed i am for sure. Good thing i'm aware of it !

Actually i am writing 2 different stories that could end as 16 eps dramas synopsis. But the process is exhausting, and the result totally umpredictable since i never took lessons. I'm quite good at finding original "pitches" (you know, 3 line plot to hook the audience), the problem is i have TOO MANY ideas : It's like walking in the jungle. Very Slow. And you get scratched by thorns and bitten by spiders. The other issue is inspiration : Really uncooperative and unreliable. One day i deliver 20 pages, then i stay a month completely dry. That said, i don't give up. One small step after another. But i'd rather keep them in my drawer than compromising about the quality : Don't do to others what you don't want them to do to you.
(Or something approaching).

Flower Boy Ramyun Shop ended. I am still crestfallen. This particular drama tugged my heart in a major way. I love its silliness, clever word play and well, EVERYTHING!

I couldn't imagine anyone other than the talented Jung Il Woo as Chapunzel. His portrayal as a lion cub trying to eat grass was spectacular! All the other characters were a hoot to watch as well. I never felt the need to press FF whenever the main couple was not on the screen.

FBRS is definitely one of my most favorite dramas ever.

And by the way,
Happy Holidays!

There will be a Christmas family gathering in two days for my whole extended family members. A very techie uncle created a family tree with all the bio and quirks of the 89 members of our family. Mine, after translations, says "[real name], eldest great-grandchild, single, joker, bad in sports, morning person, hates animals". I think my uncle is a genius!

Funny enough, I want to visit all 50 states of the USA, but can't see myself going to Hawaii. Alaska's already been checked off, though, so I guess that's something.

Hey dramabeaners! Merry Christmas...or whatever holiday you're celebrating.

I'm "home" for the holiday, looking forward to the traditional extended family Mexican food buffet tonite. Tamales and chile verde are calling my name. My mom has a weird spread in her kids, so we have the "big kids"; me and two sibs whose kids are mostly grown and having kids of their own, and the "little kids" who are just getting started. So, we have a houseful of little nephews and "greats' and one itty bitty 3 week old princess this morning. Another half a dozen or so will be over tonight. Usually, every one argues over who gets to hold THE baby. Tonite we have THREE babies....two nieces and a great nephew who are all under six weeks old. I plan to get in lots of baby rockin' time.

MY baby will be 15 tomorrow. I can't believe it. It doesn't seem that long since she was an itty bitty princess. Born on Christmas Eve, she was by far the best present I ever got. Even if sometimes I wanna throttle her. Her big brother, The Boy, will be 32 on New Year's Eve. That's even weirder. He's not coming home for Christmas for the first time. When his baby sister found out, she cried and told me that all she wanted for Christmas was to see her brother. So, big sap that I am for those kids, bought her a plane ticket to fly out for a week after Christmas.

I didn't get much drama time in this week, getting ready to go. But, I did see the end of FBRS and LOVED it. That was one of my faves for the year. My daughter has this little book I bought her when she was about five, called "The Paper Bag Princess", about a princess who fights dragons, etc, to save her prince. It's still one of my favorites. When we gave away most of her little kid books, we saved out a few and that was one of them.
I hope The Boy and his wife come up with a granddaughter someday soon for me to read it to.

Happy holidays everyone, I hope you all get to spend it with people you love and eat all you want and not gain weight. (Hey, I can dream....)

I'm blessed to have an awesome family, with only two dramaqueens in the bunch....one a sister, one a sister in law. The drama sister just got married, so she's still in happy honeymooner mode. The sister inlaw is miffed at her stepdaughter and has announced that she won't come if the daughter in law is here. So, there ya go. Should be a drama-free Christmas with all my favorite little people and big people.

Required fields are marked *

He spoils her like crazy anyway. I'm glad they get along. My youngest sister and my next brother down are about the same spread...18 years and they've never gotten along well. The brother moved out of the house before baby sister was three and they just never bonded.

My son left for a church mission when he was 19 and she was two. He worried that she'd forget him. But every time we passed a phone booth, she'd pick up the phone and say she was calling him. She drew pictures for me to send him. She was four when he came home and at the airport as soon as she caught sight of him, she was running just as fast as her little legs could go and she latched on and wouldn't let him out of her sight for a couple of days. She was sure he was going to leave again. But, he and his wife make an effort now, even though he's busy with school, to call her at least once a week, send her emails and music files etc. He took her to her first rock concert last spring. He's a stellar big brother.

Ah, 2011, you went by so slow and so fast at the same time. Overall, not as strong a year for dramas as 2010, but we had a few gems in there. My favorite still holds as Dream High, which I know many people thought was awash in bad acting and too many idols (a criticism I cannot entirely refute). Despite its weaknesses, the writing was solid and this drama had something that is an absolute must for me to love a drama and that was heart. I loved the underdog story and the various character arcs that all ran parallel before intersecting with each other.

I haven't finished it yet, but one of my other favorite dramas of 2011 is Birdie Buddy. I've been looking forward to this since that totally EPIC trailer was released earlier this year. I am SO GLAD it got to see the light of day, even if it was chopped up awkwardly for cable episode format. Thematically it is similiar to Dream High - maybe that is why I like them both so much? Birdie Buddy is all about women realizing and pursuing their dreams in and around golf. The soundtrack is phenomenal. I love that Hae Ryung is getting plenty of development as a character too. She isn't just Mi Soo's rival, but an integral part of the story in her own right.

Happy Holidays everyone! :)

Hello OT! Happy Holidays to you all! Be SAFE! Enjoy family without going too crazy.

Have you seen PSH's awesome hotness lately? He's been modeling for so much and workin hard on his film! YAY!

I started Perfect Neighbor and I'm recapping it. Gonna get the 2nd episode up tonight...I hope.

Still not done holiday shopping or card writing. When did my list of obligatory cards get this long?

I got an OBSCENE amount of money from a rich student as a gift yesterday and didn't realize it til I got home. I literally said "omg omg omg omg omg" for hours on end.

I also went out and bought myself some gifts. I worked really really really hard this year to get my life in order and I think I accomplished it. It's hard to be a freelance musician who is k-drama obsessed, and language learning obsessed, and keeping a blog obsessed and many other things obsessed...but I'm thankful I can do it all and that business has been REALLY good. In this economy, I know I'm lucky. Especially having just graduated with my master's in May 2010.

As for dramas. FBRS, so wonderful. Even with my few little bones I had to pick, it was still wonderful. I didn't feel deflated afterwards as I had with several other shows this year. I'm starting on Vampire Prosecutor and What's Up. I couldn't bring myself to start the Musical (even though I'm Broadway OBSESSED) but What's Up seems more palatable. MadDino got me watching Skip Beat and thank god she did. SO ADORABLE.

Also, head on over to Thundie's blog and give her a shoutout and some love. She needs to take a break from blogging and she's been an AMAZING blogger to us. HUGS THUNDIE!

And last but not least: OTers, you're amazing. I send love, hugs, kisses, holiday spirit, and thanks to you. I wish you, your families, your friends well. I hope things go well for you. If you're having a hard time, I hope you feel just a little respite so you have the strength to move on.

MadDino - you are a tricky wench...er, dinovader. Go Dino! I hope patience wins out! I know what you mean. I want to go faster in Neighbor than I am, but I can't cause I'm doing those long recaps you so wisely swore off.

Shel - I need more of 'em! No YOU have a fantastic holiday. (Filled with MUSIC! :D)

Alua - I told my best friend: You can wait. I can't figure yours out right now. Haha, she laughed and said she hadn't even thought to start looking for mine yet. I like how we're on the same page.

And gifts for me - I got some cubic zirconia, white gold earrings and some fancy schmancy make-up from Laura Mercier where I practiced my French with the maquilleuse from France! Then I put the rest into savings for my trip to England next year! I got my dates-ish. The wedding is the 7th of July so I'm going out two weeks before to plan. They live in London and are getting married in Oxford. I thought it was Cambridge, but that apparently brought back to many uni memories. haha.
Happy holidays to you Raine.

Yay, PSH :D:D:D I hope for many good films to make you smile and keep you from being productive in the 'real world'.

MJP - I agree. I thought he was good-looking before I saw him in action, but now that I have, it makes his photos look SO MUCH BETTER! And I'm a sucker for a smart, hard working guy. I see how he treats fans and those he works with. That makes my DAY. Every day I encounter jerks in the music business so when there's a good, respectful one, I float. To see an idol like that is amazing.

The Fame franchise is a bit confusing.

The original movie was released in 1980.

The original television series was 1982 to 1987 for a total of 120 or so episodes. A lot of the actors from the movie starred in the show.

A spin-off reality show was done in 2003 similar to American Idol. The host was Debbie Allen, who was cast as the dance teacher for both the movie and the TV show.

A remake movie was released in 2009 with an all-new cast.

Hope that helps.

Well, MJP Hubby wants to invite some friends over who have no plans, but the wife is allergic to our cat and last time they ended up leaving very quickly because her reaction was so bad.

So I think it will just be the three of us. Hopefully, we'll go to church and come home, had have a nice lunch, open presents and play, watch Christmas movies/shows and then have a nice dinner.

I'd love to have friends over, but they have all been busy with family. One friend's mom-in-law has mouth cancer and just had surgery last week, so they can't come. The other friends are travelling. We don't have any family living close to us.

We sent Teen MJP off with his presents, so he will have plenty to open whereever they send him on Christmas day.

What about you?

I keep imagining T.MJP in a little matchstick girl scenario using the presents to keep him warm. A Christmas for 3 is easy and perhaps your friends will be available for new years.
I usually have to work the day after Christmas so I stay at home and watch tv and sleep but this year I have Monday off so I'll indulge my sister who wants to have everyone over for food and crowding I suppose. I have a house-guest myself and I've invited her along as well. I don't expect it to be as good as just being at home under the blanket on my couch with a cat on my chest and a cat on my ankles, but my sister will be pleased and my house-guest ( A Vietnamese young woman) will experience a Guyanese Christmas dinner and McClintocks.

Yum, your Christmas dinner! But I think the best sounding part of your Christmas plan is the fact that YOU are in it!

Glad to hear you also have opened your home. Hopefully your experience is going fairly smoothly. Since yours appears to be an adult, you probably don't have to worry about school, curfew and such.

May you both have a wonderful day with family and friends at your sister's house.

Well, you can't say you didn't try. And, if you learned something in the process, it wasn't wasted.

Have a great holiday with your wee MJP, I love wee people. :0)

Merry Xmas and Happy Holidays to everyone! I need to sleep now, it's 1.22 am here, which means it's Xmas Eve!!!!! No Kor dramas for tomorrow, I'm just going to steep myself in the Christmas spirit and soak in the festive atmosphere. Goodnight, everyone, take care!

As everyone I know in real life is profoundly sick of my newfound obsession with Korea and Korean dramas, I must share a random thing here: In honor of finally getting around to watching Flower Boy Ramen Shop, I just ate ramen Korean-style. I grew up eating ramen, but it was always drained and mixed with butter. (How American, eh?) Today I actually followed the real directions on the bag, mixed in tons of green onions, and ate the ramen right out of the saucepan while sitting on my living room floor. I even used chopsticks and a spoon (which is why it took me like 45 minutes to consume it--I'm strictly an amateur when it comes to getting food in my mouth instead of my lap when using chopsticks).

I'm about halfway through FBRS and quite like it, although it feels a little superficial and doesn't (for me, anyway) pack the emotional wallop of the best Kdrama love stories. It's youthful, cartoony goodness, though, and I'm enjoying the way it presents Seoul as a bustling metropolis, as opposed o the low-rise, green oasis feel most dramas seem to be set in.

Your dramabeans family is always willing to read your korean drama or korean obsessed stories and ideas! I went through a floor sitting phase with dramas- that was partially because it was summer and the floor is cooler than the couch. I had ramen cravings while watching ramen shop too. Ramen shop reminded me very much of a japanese drama but I haven't seen too many dramas with high school life or as much of the fantasy.

I guess the FBRS cravings are better than the Coffee Prince ones were--ramen and waffles is a weird combination, let me tell you.

I haven't watched many Japanese dramas, but I definitely see similarities between them and FBRS: it's all the same wacky, non-sequitur storytelling, which I'm not all that crazy about, really.

Thanks for being such a good sport about newbie squeeing on the topic of drama fever and the foolish things it makes one do ;)

As it approaches midnight of Christmas Day 2011 in my neck of the woods, I hope everyone had a safe enjoyable day without anyone burning the lasagna (or the bubble tea!), setting the cat on fire, or breaking up any hair-pulling fights. And that they safely made it home, or finished washing dishes without breaking any of them.

Take care!

First of all,let me wish you all happy holidays, and merry christmas in advance. It such a pleasure sharing all those good dramas in such agreeable company. As a small token of my appreciation, I'd like to share my latest drama crush^^ I'm a fan of medical stories, and these days,I'm very passionate about KBS' Brain. I'm not familiar with 99% of the cast ( I can only recognize the female lead of "wish upon a star"),but I find it really entertaining. It has Makjang undertones too,and on the whole, even though there's no eye candy in the cast ( not that I know of at least),it's very entertaining^^ Once again, happy holidays to you all!

Happy Holidays to all my DB friends! I've been busy packing this morning and almost out the door... but I couldn't leave without wishing my fellow Kdrama addicts a wonderful season with your loved ones!
I'm off to Ft. Worth for the holidays... it's a week of bonding with my sis, so it's just her and I and a few bottles of wine! I'm really excited about it!
I was hoping to bring her over to Kdramas while visiting but she just told me its strictly dial up where she lives :*( This will be the first time I'll go a week without Kdramas. Wish me luck!
Merry Christmas, Feliz Navidad, 메리 크리스마스, Happy Kwanza, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Holidays!

I hope you all are enjoying the dramas of 2011 before it's 2012. It's been a great year----dramawise. There were some good ones with awsome ending, some so-so, some a-ok with what could have been, and ones that are just let down. Oh well, let's wish for a great new year to come! =)

Anyways, looking forward to catching up on the new dramas and completing some current ones that are just finishing up.

Keep passing on the joy of kdramas, I've almost got all my friends and family hooked.

Nodame Cantabile

A lot of chapters... a bit too many really to tackle, unless someone tells me that it's really really REALLY worth it?

Oh, I'll check it out and hopefully be able to report next Friday.

I'm currently reading Hiyokoi and when I'm reading I don't jump from one to another, it messes with my mind.

LOved FBRS.

I've read Nodame, watched the anime and live action. I'm a huuuge fan. But even just reading/watching a bit gives you the quirky, fun feel!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!! I guess my last kdrama for 2011 is The Princess' Man, still at episode 20 though. I'm quite sad that Jong will die coz he's my favorite character next to PSH & MCW. Also, I'm rooting for him and the Princess to have a happy ending. Cheers everyone! :D

Okay ladies,

Have you found a bra that can be dried in the dryer without the elastic being ruined?

I am currently waiting patiently for one to dry so that I can go out! I got too busy with stuff and forgot to do laundry. Silly me. :-)

MJP,
IDK if this info helps, but I use a mesh bag to wash and dry them in. At times I alternate and line dry vs using the dryer as I've found this adds to the wearability of the bra no matter the brand.

You dry them in the mesh bag too? Hmmm, I'll have to try that.

Am a few hundred kms further east (in other words, on the European continent, not on the British isle) at my parents'. I was the first one to arrive (on Monday already), my Dad (who lives in Asia) flew in yesterday, my sister (who lives in the capital) came today.

I went Christmas tree shopping with my Dad (a tradition we started a few years ago), and am looking forward to watching skiing on TV and hearing more classical music than normally (you may guess now where I am :-) ).

The only 'bad' thing is that being at home leaves less time for watching dramas, also in part because the WIFI doesn't reach my room and the living room tends to be too noisy/busy. Oh well. I suppose I'll survive a few days without (or less) k-dramas, and will simply look forward to having a lot to catch up on! (Can't wait for more What's Up especially and I'm counting down to Moon that Embraces the Sun of course!)

Happy holidays! Or happy days if you don't celebrate Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwaanza/Yule/etc.!

Yeah, fabulous bakeries with all sorts of goodies (real bread! real bread! real bread!).

Not sure about the hot chocolate (?), but a big café tradition indeed, like old cafés from another century where you spend your day reading the newspaper while being served all sorts of fancy types of coffee.

The architecture is spectacular just about anywhere in Europe, no?
