More stills from MBC’s When a Man Loves

So here are more stills from Song Seung-heon’s new Wednesday-Thursday drama When A Man Loves, which is the (purportedly) intense emotional gangster melodrama featuring Song as a mobster with a wife and a girlfriend (Chae Jung-ahn and Shin Se-kyung), and Yeon Woo-jin hanging around to play spoiler in the love triangle(s).
What’s funny about these stills is that I feel like I’m totally watching East of Eden all over again, from the way he’s dressed and styled to the way Shin Se-kyung emanates that same beautiful-but-stiff ingenue aura as Lee Yeon-hee. And we’ve got the same sort of fighting and strutting and facial hair, too.
Song Seung-heon plays a “cold, lonely man” who falls in love for the very first time with Shin Se-kyung. Born poor, she becomes a materialistic woman, desiring fine cars and designer bags, “but he loves her as she is anyway.” He dreams of spending a happy future with her and intends to propose, only to fall into “a hellish situation.” Aw, Chae Jung-ahn, I’m sure it’s nothing personal.
Speaking of whom, Chae’s character has been in love with our hero for ages, becoming increasingly obsessed as she sticks by his side. She believes she’s the only one who can truly understand him and watches jealously as he falls in love with someone else. To him, though, she’s just his ex-boss’s woman, though he marries her after she’s widowed. What, are we doing this biblical-style now? In the stills below, Chae gets to dabble in some action stunts by smashing a window and flying through it.
Imma be honest with y’all: I’m not sure I could care any less about this show. Okay, maybe I should take that back and try to be fair. I mean, if I sit down and really, really thought about it, could I actually care less? Perhaps. There could come along a show just like this, only written by the people behind Fashion King and directed by the folks of Dr. Jin instead of just featuring their actors. And hey, throw in some brain cancer and birth secrets and fauxcest, and fine, I’ll admit: I’d care about THAT show less.
On the upside, I do finally now see the point of the oft-deemed-erroneous turn of phrase, “I could care less,” which I’d always pegged as grammatically wrong since the meaning should really be “I couldn’t care less.” But now I see that there are in fact cases where “I could care less… but I don’t care enough to think up those examples” is fitting. So… thank you Show?
Now after all that, I’d in fact love if this show turned out to be Awesome and Dynamic and Riveting instead. Go on. I dare you. Prove me wrong.

I love Song Seung Hun. I really do. But to save my love for him I skipped Dr.Jin. And there's nothing about this one that I like besides him. So I'll skip this one too. Unless miracle happens and I hear raving reviews of how awesome this one really is.

this is completely adorable. I'm at ep 8 and its just tons of supercute for SSH. he acts like dating is rocket science. I'm actually kind of scared for how his character is going to handle the eventual heartbreak. it really reminds me of the innocence of being in love for the first time and not having a clue to what to do but loving it anyway.

I also thought of East of Eden when I saw the first pictures of SSH in this drama. Same shirt, same gangster stare, same romance plot with a younger woman...CHJ's character jumping off a window? Where have I seen that before? Didn't YAI's character in Fashion King jumped off a window too? Hmmm, will this drama offer anything new?

Oh, "When A Man Loves" and "Level 7 Civil Servant". I'm not very optimistic. It's going DOWN. Ha. Saaad. It doesn't have the secondary characters, like "East of Eden", to carry it.
He looks exactly like his "East of Eden" character. Man, my mom and I were pretty commited to that drama. Ha. Well, I made it half way-ish, at least.
But I thought he was going to fall for his boss's wife? And that's why they were together? At least that's what it was coming off as until now. So now he kind of just married her and falls for poor girl? Hrm...
I guess, Show.

I am with you on Show, or, I mean, I am with you on being NOT for Show.
Reading the character descriptions, I hate them all, and I haven't even watched them actually acting hateful. I'm not one to judge*, but this could be the worst show ever in the history of time.
*That is a complete lie. My favorite past time is judging unfairly and without ample information because it makes me feel superior.

chae jung ahn shouldnt have dropped JTBC Cruel Palace/War of Flowers. That drama is going to be a jackpot.
I wanted to see her showdown with Kim Hyun Joo so badly, because they are at the same age !

I don't think I'll ever get a handle on how to use it whilst sounding confident that I'd said what I meant to say but then again maybe it's because I'm from the UK where the original phrase was 'I couldn't care less' but I watch a lot of American shows which prefer 'I could care less.' Yeah it's all about ethnocentrism and what sounds right in my corner and Miss it's not sarcasm, I'm being wry, (or dry or synonymous,) in the opposing side.

I remember the huge blowup after that happened. LOL. Such a mess. Poor Kim Myung Min. Wasn't fair that he had to share the Daesang with SSH of all people. Then again, those end of the year awards don't really have any credibility anymore.

That's not to say I like cheaters. Never ever ever. But it would make an interesting story. And then the wife would be reasonably angry rather than a woman who is chasing after someone who never loved her? D:
On the other hand this is sounding like a less amusing version of taiwanese drama Miss Rose (+GANGSTERS!) at least with the love lines.

I want to watch it because of the prettiness of Song Seung-heon, but the story doesn't seem that interesting (I would prefer that he could fall in love with his wife instead) and I really dislike Shin Se-kyung. >.<

I won't be watching, even though I think Song Seung Heon is TOTAL EYE CANDY (I mean the man's eyelashes just won't quit!) and I loved him in My Princess. I didn't think his acting totally sucked in that one. As a side note: Honestly, why don't these stars with an open reputation as incompetent actors make it their mission to prove their nay-sayers wrong? Why don't they commit themselves to seriously learning the kraft? Surly, they must have acting classes/coaches in Korea. That's why Hyun Bin is my favorite Korean actor: He's dedicated to learning the craft, AND he's hot as hell!

i've watched all Song Seung Heon's movies and dramas and stupidly crazy of him (but sori, l didnt finish Dr Jin...l'm mad of the why he picked that drama, lol). l dont care if the act is good or not, l still loved him.
East of Eden and When a man's loves, look similar. But after reading summaries and synopsis, l think l choose East of Eden.
He married earlier to his ex-boss's wife who really good with that villain looks, just to eventually fall in love with 1st lead lady? Gosh, l dont like the plot. Its complicated and l dont like SSH in this type of drama. Its just not him.
He has those gangster handsome look alright, and emotion expression respected but anyhow so stupid married to such woman. Its up to writer, l understand, but Korean drama always complicate things when it can be easy and smooth.
Sori, l will definitely again falls for this drama just to watch this guy with great body abs and macho looks, but the drama....mmpphh..l'm not sure.

When l know that SSH picked a drama, love drama, gosh, how can l resist that guy with handsome looks, nice body and great act...and his eyelashes, wow!
When l know that the people behind is of Fashion King and Dr Jin, what the hell! He should pick other drama, lol. Dr Jin is totally failure and Fashion King..sucks.
Anyhow, l've watch ep 1, looks ok. Haven't decide to continue or not. l dont mind love triangle but married to ex mobbed boss and truly fall i love with other woman after that? l just dont get it.
Btw, l'll watch....for the abs..hahaha!

Can I really say something? Please please replace the actress. I think she has destroyed everything in this drama! She is not good enough to be the main actress in this story. i felt that there is a big difference between the reality what audience perceived than the drama was trying to present. I am at the episode of 6, I don't know if i can keep going to the rest of the spisodes. The main actor is wonderful and being outstanding. I like the way how he behaves but not the the lead actress. She is the one who is dispointting me.

Blame the writers. You have to have characters you think suck that's where the angst comes in. Your angst - not the characters angst. It's that angst that makes people want to keep watching. Sucked in by their own annoyance at specific characters. Clever really.

Hang on. I've watched to ep. 10 and haven't picked up that he married the dead bosses girlfriend. I've also found some of the summaries for this (not to mention other dramas) are wrong. I am not going to read them anymore because I read them ... think one thing is going to happen ... then something else happens. I haven't noticed "Seo Mi Do" being materialistic yet. A truly materialistic person wouldn't give a damn about working for anyone to pay off their debt if they don't have to. Han Tae Sang told her she didn't have to pay it but she is by working for his company. Materialistic??? Ummmm NO.

i agree with Alana.i really respect this site but the entire description on the drama is very very off. Its very off putting actually and had i not just been bored and netflixed before i read your views I'd have missed out on some epic shirtles scenes. He did not marry any girlfriend. heroine isn't a money grabber. re-check your info for future writings please.

i didn't know that when a man falls in love he would become either partly or totally fool!.. or is it foolishness or stupidity?? He's a wonderful man but hey!would you take some one whose cheating at you and even dared to do something foolish at your own place! ??
I can't abide with the heroine too! CHEATING is just a big NO!

I just don't understand why other people pre-judged this drama without even watching it.
SSH didn't overact compared to "Dr. Jin". Yes, it was reminiscent of his role in East of Eden", but very subtle and emotional. He played his role as a gangster to a T and as a naive older man who fell in love for the first time with such innocence and sweetness. He was fauthful to Mi do and turned a blind eye to her cheating because of his obsessive love. But in the end, he let her go when he came to realize that she really did not love him.
They way they used the blackboard as a means of communication was rather touching.
I was glad it had a happy ending. It just showed that true love and devotion will melt any woman's heart.
