You From Another Star: Episode 15

I love when the shoe is on the other foot, and in this case it means it’s Min-joon’s turn to stew in jealousy and pettiness. It isn’t that I can’t understand his reasons for keeping his distance, but given that he’s trapped by his need to be noble for his love’s sake, I can’t deny that it’s gratifying to see him squirm a little in its wake, pinned by his own actions into walking the talk. Even if all that talk is a big fat noble lie.

Ratings held steady with 25.9% for this episode. Next week may or may not experience a shift due to the Sochi Olympics, though the drama will not be pre-empted. (It’ll air a little earlier than its usual timeslot, but we’ll get episodes.)

RECAP: FIFTEENTH RECORD

Song-yi’s father stays by her bedside all night, and she wakes to find him clasping her hand. He looks at her with unsure eyes as she registers the fact that he’s here, finally. She asks tearfully, “Why did you only come now? I grew up all alone—why did you come so late?” Both cry freely as they embrace for the first time in years.

A little while later, the mood is freer as they toast with fried chicken and beer (though Dad doesn’t let her drink). She asks if he missed her all these years, and he says that it was lucky for him that she became so famous, so he could see her everywhere. Song-yi, on the other hand, didn’t have that luxury—she didn’t even know if he was alive or dead. Even when her former manager struggled through his father’s long illness, she was envious: “No matter what kind of father he was, I would rather have him by my side.”

She says that she regretted her angry words the last time they’d seen each other, almost as soon as she’d said them. She’d come home after her accident that night wanting to tell Dad all about it, only to find that he’d packed and left. She holds no grudges, though, thanking him for being here when she woke up.

Mom arrives at the door just as Song-yi asks if Dad ever married again or had kids, and smiles to hear him answer in the negative. He asks Song-yi if she has a boyfriend, and after a brief pause she says no, and that she hasn’t met anybody as good as her father. He chides her, saying that he shouldn’t be her barometer for good guys, and she concedes, “Well, there was one man who was similar to you. Someone who made me feel uneasy that he might disappear.” Those words bring a stricken look to his face.

She describes her affection as one-sided, but her father assures her that he’s sure the man loved her back. Song-yi muses, “I’ve learned that it’s not an easy thing for the person I love to love me back. That’s a miracle.” As if to underscore that point, we see Se-mi in tears in Hwi-kyung’s hospital room, distraught over his condition.

Min-joon sits down to write a new entry in his journal, now with only one month left in his remaining time on Earth.

In the interrogation room, a frustrated Detective Park runs into the door repeatedly, trying to figure out how Min-joon could leave the room on one side but not appear on the other. Is there a secret portal? Magic? He literally bangs his head over and over, which makes it a lucky thing that he’s not the brains of the operation.

But Min-joon walks in of his own will, here to complete his confession. “However, it will be a completely different story,” he says. “You probably won’t even believe it.” But he has decided that in order to get them to believe the rest of his claims, he has to first explain himself.

After relocating to a camera-less area, Min-joon begins by confirming that he was on that cruise. Asked about being caught on a security camera in a separate building, Min-joon admits that he can transport himself at will, which makes the detective burst out laughing. Seok, on the other hand, listens seriously.

Min-joon recounts the incrimination conversation he heard on the cruise, which didn’t make sense until after Yura died. He names Jae-kyung as the culprit and hands over a piece of evidence: a USB drive. It’s not the same one that Yura kept, which got stolen from him, but fresh footage that proves that Yura was dating Jae-kyung. If they believe him, Min-joon offers to do what he can to help their investigation in the coming month.

Afterward, both investigators sit shell-shocked, trying to make sense of what they heard. The cop sighs, “Even as my head tells me it’s not true, my heart already believes him.”

Bok-ja visits Song-yi in the hospital and guesses that Song-yi is hoping for someone to visit or call—say, her alien man. Bok-ja points out that it’s not polite to be thinking of another man when Hwi-kyung saved her life and lies unconscious in the aftermath. A guy who rejected her, to boot. Instead, Bok-ja urges her to accept her devoted Hwi-kyung and give up waiting on her goblin man.

Song-yi makes a visit to Hwi-kyung’s room, which his mother immediately vacates with one cutting glare in her direction. Jae-kyung remains in the room and says a few comforting words, though he certainly doesn’t look grateful when she says that Hwi-kyung saved her from potential death.

Song-yi mentions telling the investigator that Jae-kyung dated Yura, asking if that made trouble for him. He dismisses it as a misunderstanding, then asks carefully whether she told anybody else. She answers, “Not other than Hwi-kyung,” which Jae-kyung notes thoughtfully. Ack! Not when he’s unconscious and so close to death already! That would be like taking candy from a baby for Jae-kyung. Or, you know… killing a baby.

As Song-yi leaves the room, an unseen figure snaps photos of her from the hallway.

Se-mi reads the latest headlines, which identify Song-yi’s rescuer as a handsome young chaebol. Min-joon hears the same thing from students at school. Neither receives this news happily.

Song-yi’s mother decides to back out of the management contract with Jae-kyung, offering to return the contract fee in full, only to get a rude awakening to hear that breaching the contract incurs a penalty three times the signing fee.

Min-joon catches the tail end of her conversation as he arrives home with Lawyer Jang, alarmed at the mention of Jae-kyung. Having heard about Min-joon dumping her daughter, Mom turns hostile (“Who the hell are you to reject her?”), which gets Lawyer Jang fired up on his behalf, and he snaps that Min-joon only acted as Song-yi’s manager because she begged him to.

Mom has to have the last word, and fires a parting shot: “We won’t miss you at all! Song-yi’s contracted with S&C Group, and she’s going to get engaged to Hwi-kyung too!”

Lawyer Jang worries that Min-joon’s upset at his interference, only to realize that Min-joon is so fixated on his thoughts that he isn’t even paying attention. It’s the engagement comment that’s weighing on his mind, and Min-joon argues that Song-yi doesn’t even like Hwi-kyung, who’s just a friend. “That was before the accident,” Lawyer Jang points out. “He saved her life, so her feelings could change.”

“Did I not save her life?” Min-joon demands. “I saved her lots!”

Lawyer Jang supposes that Song-yi started to like Min-joon after he saved her, so it’s possible her feelings could turn since Hwi-kyung saved her this time. Min-joon cuts him off: “Would you fall for everyone who saved a life?!” Insisting that he’s not angry, no not at all, he storms off in a huff.

Then Min-joon goes online to read the news that Song-yi is now engaged to her chaebol rescuer. He scrolls down to the comments, wondering what to pick for a handle: “Am I supposed to pick a singer I like?” He starts to type in a name, Lee Mi-ja (which made me laugh out loud, since she’s a 72-year-old trot singer your grandparents might like).

Then he deletes that to pick a new name—”Bae Ho jjang.” HAHAHA. (Which is like saying “Rain Rules!” in about forty years.) He types out his message, sounding like a cranky old senior citizen: “You say Chun Song-yi is getting engaged? Hur hur. This sounds to me to be a baseless rumor. In my long life, I see that smoke occasionally appears where there is no fire.” Immediately his comment gets derisive replies, and he huffs at the rudeness of young folk these days.

Then Min-joon logs on to the chat app on his phone and starts writing a message to Song-yi, only to stop himself each time. The messages try to sound casual and instead come off curt, because they’re all dancing around the thing he really wants to say: “I miss you.” He types that out and moves to delete it, but his finger hits send instead—and then he freaks out to see the message actually post. Can’t have her read that!

He bolts for the door, while across town Song-yi hears her phone ding and reaches to take a look. Suddenly time stands still and Min-joon darts forward to intercept her phone… and gets foiled at her pattern unlock code. HA! Too many failed attempts gets him locked out for 30 seconds, so he stands there nervously waiting it out. He reaches toward Song-yi and touches a lock of her hair, just as time restarts. Oh, yes. This is much better.

So Min-joon is caught red-handed hovering over Song-yi’s head holding on to both her hair and her phone, and the first thing he thinks of to say is, “So, do you feel better?” Song-yi demands to know what he’s doing and whether he really can transport himself places, and Min-joon sorta fumbles to answer, “Um, sometimes, when I’m busy or if there’s traffic…”

Then she notices the phone in his hand, which he drops like a hot potato. She asks suspiciously what he was doing with it and orders him out of the room. He reminds her to check her message, waiting for her to enter in that pattern code before freezing time again (ha), so that he can then delete his incriminating message from the account.

While Song-yi puzzles over the lack of messages on her phone, Min-joon loiters to ask about her contract with Jae-kyung. She reminds him to mind his own business, and he bursts out that she wasn’t even going to sign in the first place. Too bad she’s quicker to realize that she never told him that, and asks if he goes around eavesdropping on people’s conversations. Min-joon’s eyes dart back and forth guiltily and he says, “I don’t listen to everything…”

Now Song-yi recalls all the embarrassing things he might have heard her say (like her raging that he never liked her), before a horrifying thought enters her head: “You don’t… maybe… the shower? Or… the bathroom? Are you a pervert?”

Min-joon exclaims that he’s not some kind of weirdo (though the indignation falls a bit flat considering you’re an alien), and he insists that he can’t spend his life listening to everything; he only catches little bits sometimes. He finds himself swearing that he’s not a Peeping Tom, and Song-yi orders him to leave: “Get out, Pervert Alien!”

Hwi-kyung is still unconscious, and every day that goes by that he doesn’t wake up increases the danger to his life. This is a fact Jae-kyung notes with too much interest, and Min-joon happens to see him on his way out of Song-yi’s room. So he pays Jae-kyung a little visit in Hwi-kyung’s room to confront him about all the lives he’s endangered, including his little brother’s.

Jae-kyung just laughs and says that exposing him will expose Min-joon too, and people will fear him as a monster. Min-joon asks why Jae-kyung has gone to such lengths to kill people when he already has so much. Jae-kyung sniffs that the world is full of people who are as expendable as bugs, with only a few who are truly necessary—and when a few of those “bugs” get in his way, it’s best to eliminate them.

“That isn’t evil,” Jae-kyung says. “It’s a good deed that benefits more people.” Yeesh. I wonder if he really believes that. I suppose we should be glad that Jae-kyung classifies Min-joon as a useful person, and makes one last attempt at a deal: Use his powers for Jae-kyung, and Jae-kyung will protect him. Then Song-yi could remain safe as well. Min-joon agrees to think about it, and I really hope that’s just to lull him into a false sense of security.

Min-joon goes home with Song-yi’s mother’s words ringing in his ears about Song-yi marrying Hwi-kyung, and that prompts an unwelcome hallucination—it’s his dream of marital bliss, only starring Song-yi and Hwi-kyung, cavorting in his own bed. I swear, you can almost see him indignantly thinking, That’s MY fantasy! Suddenly enraged, Min-joon grabs the bed linens and flings them madly, dispersing that image.

Then he imagines Hwi-kyung and Song-yi baby-talking to each other like lovesick fools, feeding each other fruit, and enjoying cozy domestic moments together. Aw, poor guy. His delusional fantasies sure are thorough.

Song-yi is discharged from the hospital with warnings not to engage in strenuous activity too soon. She intends to head right back to work, though, saying that she’ll be careful. She explains to her father that she’s realized that life moves quickly, leaving you little time to do all the things you want, and be with the people you want. So she wants to use the rest of her time well.

Song-yi’s mother tries one more time to reject the management deal, but it only takes one fancy van and an eager-to-please staff to win her over. So Mom orders Song-yi to come outside to be escorted to the film set in style—but when Song-yi gets there, it’s Min-joon who comes screeching up in his car. No van, no staff.

Turns out he sent the staff away, having paid the contract breach fees in full and speaking as her attorney. We see him taking care of the matter in a hero moment, full of cool music and forceful charisma—but to Song-yi’s face he glosses it over like it’s nothing.

So he ends up driving her, offering to be her manager. Song-yi snipes at him the whole way to the set, reminding him that she’s keeping her distance and making certain he understands why. And when they arrive Song-yi stops Min-joon from following her in, and asks him not to wait for her either.

Reminding him that he was the one who said she was nothing to him, she asks him to leave. Bound by his own words, he can’t argue. “You said you disliked me,” she says. “Then act like a man who dislikes me.”

Song-yi would rather keep her distance from Se-mi as well, but Se-mi steps forward to intercept her on her way in. She explains how Hwi-kyung had decided not to treat her as a friend anymore, for Se-mi’s own sake, because he didn’t want to make her unhappy the way he’d felt while pining after Song-yi. “Do you understand how I felt, hating you?” she asks.

Then she sighs, saying, “How could you understand? To you, Hwi-kyung is a good friend who’s comfortable to be around. But to me, he was the one person I would give everything up to have.” She admits to feeling jealousy behind her back, “But when I saw Hwi-kyung diving to catch you, I prayed that I would die instead of him.”

She understands that Hwi-kyung feels the same thing for Song-yi, and that’s why she’s come to this point: “I’ll ask a favor of you. Can’t you accept Hwi-kyung?”

Jae-kyung receives a surprise visit from Detective Park, and to avoid a scene he agrees to be questioned. Chairman Dad is furious to hear it, and orders someone to talk to their inside man at the prosecutor’s office. Above all, they must make certain this doesn’t get leaked to the press.

Then, the camera pans over to show us that Hwi-kyung, lying in his hospital bed a few feet away, has woken up. In fact, he’d stirred that first night, only to keep up the coma ruse.

So when Min-joon had materialized out of thin air in his room, Hwi-kyung was awake to see it. Hwi-kyung had clearly not wanted anyone to realize he was awake, so Min-joon had kept that knowledge to himself. And when Min-joon had confronted Jae-kyung about all the people he’d killed, Hwi-kyung had been listening.

Without an entourage, Song-yi waits to film her scene for hours, only to find out that it’ll take several more. She bites back a snippy retort and pretends this is fine with her, heading inside to wait out the rest of the night.

By the time Se-mi is done with her scene, it’s too late to shoot Song-yi’s. The maknae crew member gets distracted and forgets to convey the message, leaving a napping Song-yi behind in the prop room.

Thus she wakes in the middle of the night with nobody around for miles. She heads outside alone, incredulous to find that everyone packed up and left without her. But as she stumbles on a stair, a hand is right there to steady her—Min-joon.

She shakes off his arm and asks why he waited when she told him to leave. Min-joon answers, “I think I’ll have to protect you.”

She scoffs, “What does that mean? I’m not that smart so you’ll have to lay it out concretely, so I can understand why.”

Min-joon searches for a response, and she asks accusingly if he’s a player, or if he enjoys toying with a person’s feelings. She stalks off, then whirls back around to demand, “You said you never once liked me! That you never felt butterflies for me, or worried about me, or pictured a future together! You said I was a stand-in for that girl!”

Still he remains silent, so she adds, “Now I dislike you too. With you acting like this, I dislike you even more. So disappear from my sight—no, from my life. And I hope you can understand how selfish you’re being.”

She turns to leave for good this time. Suddenly, a light flickers on, and another and another, until all the houses in the set village are lit brightly and looking like something out of a fairy tale.

Then Song-yi flies into the air, soaring toward Min-joon and landing just close enough for him to hold her. “What are you doing?” she asks.

“The most selfish thing I can,” he says, and kisses her.

EPILOGUE

It’s the scene after Song-yi’s surgery, and her father leaves her room before she wakes. He takes the elevator down alongside Min-joon when the car suddenly comes to a halt. Min-joon explains to Dad that Song-yi has longed to see her father and would love to see him when she wakes.

Dad asks if he’s very close to Song-yi, and Min-joon answers, “I like her very much.” Aw, so Dad did know what he was talking about when he assured Song-yi that her love wasn’t one-sided.

COMMENTS

Aw, yeah, I love when the noble idiot comes to the breaking point of his nobility and just acts selfish, because that’s what we want them to be anyway. Where’s the gratification in withholding and restraint and reasonable logic when you’re just dying to be together? Even if we (or he) have to suffer through a bout of pneumonia in penance, I think that’s a consequence we’re all willing to live with, no? Although if he were to suddenly discover a building up of immunity, I wouldn’t mind that so much, either. Maybe that could be a new research project he could work on. Kisses in the name of science!

Min-joon is such an even-keeled personality that I love it when he breaks character and acts out—I’m pretty sure that any look of glee on Lawyer Jang’s face is mirrored on my own. And seeing how Song-yi stuck to her resolutions highlighted just how much he enjoyed the effect whenever she broke past his outer shell; he got to huff that he didn’t like her being around all the time while totally loving it deep down. It was hilarious at the time, but now he’s at the point where if he wants that back, he’s got to make some admissions of his own, and it’s so satisfying to see him just admit it. Even though he literally froze time and space to take it back the first time with that errant text message. (Would it have killed ya to let her read the simple “I miss you”?)

I have to admit that this drama has played the Jae-kyung Is Uber-villain card for much longer than I’d anticipated, because I didn’t think that would be our big source of conflict in this final stretch. There exist so many sources of conflict and complication aside from the Dr. Evil angle that I just figured we would have explored other story threads. As much as he IS an entertaining evil (at least he’s fun to watch, carrying out his dastardly deeds in an amusingly over-the-top way), I want to know more about Min-joon’s alien life and the comet that’s coming to fetch him and the mysteries of his place in the cosmos.

The investigators fall into the same category of funny sidekick characters who I don’t mind watching but who are obviously there as plot devices, so I find myself hoping that the Yura investigation wraps with a few episodes left in the series. Because if ever there were a series where I could enjoy a whole episode of dreamy, flirty, hilariously fish-out-of-water-y epilogue, this is the one. No need to play out the obvious murderer angle till the bitter end, is there? Not when there are adorable bickering matches to be had and smooches to be doled out.

I'm in love with Hwikyung. I love Songyi, I love Minjoon, they're perfect for each other. But my heart hurts for Hwikyung. He love Songyi so much and sacrifice everything for her, but that just not enough. But oh well, that's what makes him one of the nicest second lead ever, imo. Sometimes he is so dumb its hilarious, but kudos to him in this episode for tricking his hyung. I understand that he will never get Songyi, ang I absolutely love Minjoon-Songyi pairing, but please make an happy ending for Hwikyung. Songyi, and all of can take Minjoon, I will keep Hwikyung for my self (if I can).
And can Jun Jihyun be more gorgeous? She's just so pretty, is it wrong to have a girl crush on her?

I understand what you wrote about Hwi-kyung, only I keep dwelling on his horrible brother. It must be breaking Hwi-kyung's heart to learn that his brother is so evil, that his brother would prefer he stay in a coma. It's smart that Hwi-Kyung's not revealing himself as out of the coma yet too - he's really weak right now, and that makes him more easily kill-able to Jae-kyung. Hwi-kyung is many things, but a good liar isn't one of them, his brother will know right away. He's probably the safest in that hospital with the armed guards. Poor baby!

I'm in drama heaven now!! because it's the BEST episode ever! It makes up for the gloomy, lack of OTP scenes episode we had yesterday. This episode gives us every feeling a romcom should have. It's heartwarming, funny, and romantic. So daebak!!! They really set the new bar for a romcom kdrama and I seriously don't how any other romcom kdrama could top this off.

So many things to love from this episode that I don't even know where to start. So I'm just gonna highlight my fave
- Jealous and grumpy MJ is so cuteee! He's really out of his stoic character which completely makes sense for someone who's never been in love to go ballistic hearing the woman you love is rumoured to be engaged. And I love the fact SY makes him feel what he did to her, not actually on revenge purpose but she's just stating the facts of whatever he has said before. She doesn't want to be given false hope with him being her manager and stuff. No grey area for her when it comes to love. She's just the best drama heroine ever!!

- Lawyer Jang and Mom scene is hilarious!!! it cracks me up!! They should have more scenes together.

- SY played it cool when he picked her up to drive her off to the location set. Counting 1, 2, 3, 3.5… before got into the car. JJH is just so gooood in playing it on.

- The flying kiss!!! it was so magical and just like a fairytale..and for the first time I'm feeling okay waiting for another 6 days for next episode because now SY should have known how MJ feels for her. I love the fact it doesn't scare her off to have MJ flying her to his arms. She doesn't resist the kiss and just closes her eyes while he's kissing her.

- The Epilogue. Our alien does know how to be a man!!! He has become more and more human these days... and I think it will make more sense if he eventually turned into human as his body and emotion adjust to the earth condition

What I'm hoping for the next episode
- HYR murder case should be solved in 1-2 episode since the prosecutor and detectives have more evidence leading to JK. Now even his brother knows what a wacko JK is.. So it should be solved anytime soon. This murder case should not be dragged any further.
- MJ and SY as a couple deal with the fact that MJ is an alien that needs to go home soon. I'm also hoping that SY finally can see what MJ has done for her all this time to keep her alive.
- more and more kissing and romantic scenes for the next 6 episodes since they live next to each other and he acts as her manager... More OTP scenes should be expected, no? I hope that is not too much to ask for, PDnim and Writernim?

Now I'm looking forward to tonight special! Although it's only recap but 70mins special of MJ and SY is still nice treat!

i also think that they should wrap up the HYR case. either the next episode or the episode after that. i want the drama to focus more on the dilemma of DMJ leaving in a month.

what i like about this drama is its consistency. like for example CSY decided to avoid DMJ since their conversation by the beach and there was never a time that she tried reaching out for him. yes she was waiting at least for him to call her while she was at the hospital but she didnt initiate to call him. even when she saw DMJ in her room she was telling him to leave. cause thats whats annoying with some kdramas that ive watched. one day the leads decide to be sweet to each other and then the next day they dont with some unreasonable things. i was really happy DMJ finally showed his true feelings to her. cant wait to see whats the aftermath of that kiss ;)

What I loved about CSY keeping her distance when all she really wanted to do was be by DMJ side is that she remains strong when he tells her he doesn't like her, even though she thinks he might be lying, she keeps her distance. She is definitely showing younger girls to be STRONG and not keep calling going to the guys house. It makes this part of her scenes so strong, she is a great role model in this instance

that scene with lawyer jang getting carried away playing the protective dad to MJ had my breakfast shooting out of my nose hahahaha! How much do I love the characters of this show? I mean with the exception of greasy haired villain of course. I mean I cannot even hate on Semi so much and money grabbing mom coz they are evolving I think. Well the drama is not over yet so feelings may change about them.

And HK, oh my. Second leads are sometimes portrayed as too bloody perfect or constant irritant but HK is totally lovable. I'm still not over that menstrual leave excuse hahah! He is funny, loyal and so so sincere I just wanna hug him!!

Episode 14 made me realize how much I love seeing both leads onscreen together. That's why I am so glad of the developments in this episode and that hospital scene MJ getting caught with SY hair and phone in his hands, precious!!

Also, love the clothes on these two p-- preppy, chic and young. Maybe its the tight schedule of shooting but SY is showing a little puffiness around the eyes while KSH, wow fresh as ever!

While I am on a high on this drama I cant get rid of the feeling of anxiousness. I keep waiting for the plot to dip ( I mean there are plot holes the size of planetoids all over it but I'm willing to suspend my disbelief because of the cuteness and the compelling performances) at anytime but hopefully it wouldn't come. Sigh!

I am also glad MJ is showing signs of his purportedly big brain by confessing the truth to the police finally and having another USB. Hallelujah!Lets just end this thing about psycho killer coz its borderline stupid already. It should have ended awhile ago.

I mean the cosmos here is the big thing to overcome, that is enough I think. In Gumiho, there was no big bad really it was nature but that did not make it any less compelling. The chemistry between these two is enough to power up a small country, really.

Cmon writers and directors please pull thru for us!!

"The chemistry between these two is enough to power up a small country"-I couldn't agree more, and I'm just amazed because they don't actually seem to suit-she seems too old, he seems too young, but wow are they sizzling onscreen. And making my heart ache.
The whole thing is so good, with the continual cute and clever parodies of other movies and dramas, the stellar acting of EVERYONE (I just want to SLAP Son Yi's mother a few times); the most EVIL looking bad guy EVER! Much worse than Young Do at his worst, the pure comedy GOLD-this thing better hold together!!! Seriously, it BETTER!

That scene, dashing to her side and retrieving his phone message (sans alien time stop-she was asleep)-was done in a Taiwanese drama by Sho Low, called Hi My Sweetheart.
Min Joon's timing was perfect! when she got into her phone and he stopped the time.

i know right? sometimes it's in the end where audiences get shortchanged. It's like they hook you up first, they make it so you started caring for the characters as if they're real. And just when your life revolves around this fantasy life ion the screen, they suddenly take away everything. They should have a name for this syndrome really. What is it, seriously? What, writer's fatigue, they run out of gas, run out of sense of humor, they got drained of happiness, too much pressure so they take out their anger on the audience?

Ok I am sorry for being all negative. It's just fear speaking. I just truly hope they don't break our collective hearts, or I go to my grandad's dictionary of old swear words and hurl it ...on the screen...sigh...

I know what you mean about running out of steam and breaking collective viewers hearts, but the show is not over till it's over and let's give it the benefit of the doubt for now and hold on to some hope. At least even if we don't get the ending we want there's still a whole group of like minded people here to appreciate all those grandpa swear words that you can hurl at the show. Seriously, someone should compile all those Joseon proverbs/curses/analogy references as a tribute to DMJ!

I wasn't really meaning age-there's a physical maturity about her and a boyishness about him that makes it appear a mismatch in some way, but regardless, this couldn't have been cast better-I'm glad she isn't young like I.U. for instance. this is perfect.

I Thank the stars for this episode. It's almost a redemption from the last one. Just enough comedy and melodrama to keep me hooked for another week. ALso love that Se Mi is slowly coming to terms with 'reality' and what it means to truly love someone (you'd want the best for the other person). Her honest sharing with Seong Yi got me all teary-eyed. DAEBAK to team YFAS!

Worst time ever for him to get sick! Ugh, if Jae-kyung heard about it, I can only imagine what would go down. Can Do Min-joon not get sick due to the power of love? Just asking, lol.

And also, Do Min-joon needs to come clean about Jae-kyung being evil to CSY before she tells him something else that makes him have to kill her right then and there...

Hear, hear JB!

Thanks for another great recap :)
Though the storyline is not perfect, I totally love the characters and the awesome hilarity that is Cheon Song Yi, and an thoroughly enjoying this show. Makes me laugh out loud every episode!
Just hope the writer can satisfyingly wrap everything up in the remaining few eps. Few things here and there are still bugging me and I'd like clarification. Like the mention of the incident in Dr Evil's childhood and how the brothers's hyung died (connected maybe me thinks). And whether Song Yi has some connection to her past look alike. Is it just a case of an accidental doppelganger, which blah, or something more. I mean, if you're gonna go there, go there proper! If you're gonna have 2 characters that look exactly alike, at least give us something more than just using it as a lame plot devise of getting our hero interested in the heroine. Especially after dropping all sorts of hints. Like, Song Yi's explicit dislike of the Joseon time and her being oddly moved seeing the hair pin the first time. Also, what about the alien stuff, his planet, the comet, and his declining abilities!
But, more importantly, hope to get to see a lot more flirting, kissing, cute bickering :) At least before we get to the final break up angst. Better yet, skip the angst and go straight to the happily ever after. Wouldn't mind watching an episode of just that. I'd even swallow my quibbles about holes in the story. I'm a sucker for happy endings! :D

This episode is daebaaaak!! Too many awesomeness in 59 minutes! I love how Min Joon turn on all the lights for Song Yi and that flying kiss was priceless~ But I feel a little bit bad for Se Mi, she must love Hwi Kyung so much that she wants Song Yi to accept him...you poor little girl. and as this episode and I can't help to think how is this drama gonna end-- Min Joon and Song Yi live happily ever after, min joon leaves the earth, or Song Yi ends up with Hwi Kyung. Honestly the third option is not bad for me because we all know that Hwi Kyung loves Song Yi as much as Min Joon does, but wait, it doesn't mean it don't ship the main couple--I want MJ and SY to end up together really bad!!- But who knows, right?
And I think it's time for Song Yi to at least begin to aware what's happening around her: How Lee Jae Kyung is dangerous for her, I mean. Our Song Yi shouldn't just live without knowing what MJ and HK are protecting her from. I hope she'll realize something on the new eps.

Thank you so much for your ever-entertaining and insightful recaps, JB! ;)

Thank you to all the commenters who have written their comments because they are all so entertaining as well! ;)

I cannot agree more with everything that has been said about how absolutely awesome ALL the characters in this awesome drama!

I salute each and every actor in this drama and in all other Korean dramas I have watched since I started watching Korean dramas around 6 years ago because they have by and large shown outstanding acting skills that could be matched with the acting skills of any award-winning Hollywood actor.

I cannot read or write Korean and yet I have no difficulty understanding or guessing the emotions and message behind every facial expression, every gesture, every body movement, everything said or done by the actors because the actors are THAT good in conveying the emotions and message.

And this drama has such talented actors in spades.

All the actors, from the leads to the actors in smaller roles such as the actors' on-screen assistants, shine in their respective roles that I cannot find fault with anyone's acting!

I am so enjoying this drama especially with KSH and Gianna in their lead roles and with the storyline and the execution of the story done so creatively and interestingly with the epilogues and a fine balance between the serious, scary, funny and silly beats from all the characters!

This drama is close to becoming my favourite drama of all time because it has made me laugh out loud, cry my eyes out, feel feverish and all tingly inside, right along with the characters, that I do not remember feeling this way about a drama in a long time.

And to think that I almost give this drama a miss because I do not like fantasy-like dramas and the idea of an alien being among humans.

Thank God for the recaps by Javabeans that sealed the deal for me because after I started reading the recaps, the recaps made me want to watch the drama. And I have not looked back since.

I know that so much has been said about how luminous both KSH and Gianna look in their respective roles but has anyone noticed how GORGEOUS the actor playing the Prosecutor role is? I cannot help but admire how lovely his features are and how soft his look is! And he is SO tall to boot! Hehehe!!

Looking forward to the rest of the episodes to see how the writers will wrap up this drama considering the gigantic challenge of matching an alien with a human.

We all are waiting and hoping for a happily-ever-after ending but I am curious to know the resolution the writers will decide on.

After the FARCE of an ending of Mirae's Choice, I am understandably sceptical of getting an ending that I can be satisfied with especially considering the monumental obstacle in our lead characters' way to a happy ending but I am also an optimist, so I am waiting with bated breath the ending of this awesome drama. ;)

Just to end with something I cannot help but do -
Yaaaaaaayyyyyy!! They kissed again!! More kisses, please!! Hahaha!! ;)

My mind just playing ang wondering what would happen to Do Min Joo if they have... even if just a little bit of intimate scene with Song Yi. What would be the effect on him... The kiss scene in ep 9made him terribly sick. Curious how the scenario would be? I love the episode today. Song Yi flying to Do Min Joo and gave her a kiss is romantic. New, very creative and remarkable.

Im fangirling over Min-Joon right now..Kim Soo Hyun does so much justice to his character.

I never noticed an actor put so much stress in the way the words are delivered as this man does.
My favorite lines throughout his episode were the way he said to Cheon Song-Yi "don't mess with me" while on the way to the shooting.
The way he said "Did I not save her life?”...“I saved her lots!”

Min-Joon is so much like a lil kid when jealous. This man is HOT when jealous..I wish we get to see more of this frustration so that it can burst out in another DAEBAK kiss..^_^ :D

Jeon Ji Hyun and Soo Hyun are rocking my socks off with their mindblowing chemistry.
I believe that they just set the bar for the awesomest "flying kiss" in the history of kissingland.

Lawyer Jang is so effing awesome. Loved him playing the dad's role for a 400 year old man.

I hope they give us a happy ending where lil alien hybrids are moving around the house.. ㅋㅋㅋ

This is another excellent series that is showing little weaknesses because of the ridiculous live-shooting system. Not just the occasional choppy direction, but obvious rushed elements in the script. At this point, even after those heart-felt reunion scenes, I don't see any reason for the father character to even exist in the story. It's like the writer had something in mind for him, forgot what it was, and is now trying to justify paying the actor. Very odd.

Cheon Song Yi's daddy is a very tenacious human being. Only when his daughter's life is at risk will he make his dramatic entrance.
I do think her relationship with our alien is more than enough of a 'family' element. But i'm glad that they didn't make daddy's re-appearance more dramatic than it could've been (ie. song yi still resenting & yelling at him, mommy not ready to forgive him).

It was amusing, also, that the last two episodes highlighted another of the oddities in the network production system: their use of large buildings with inadequate heating systems. Making people work 22 hour days is both abusive and counter-productive. Not heating an expensive building where high-value, high budget production is routinely scheduled is abusive and stupid.

I really like that these two episodes gave a hell lot more character development to everyone:
- our bumbling detective is smart enough to be suspicious when the evidence is presented too neatly, and his silly antics are actually quite endaring.
- SY's mom had always seemed quite mercenary but two scenes - when she asked the father to wait for SY, and her subtle smile when she overheard him saying that he's still single - showed that she does have a soft side and that she does genuinely care for SY.
- I had pretty much given up on SM but that plea for SY to accept HK so that one of them can be happy was very touching. While she may have been a shitty 'friend', at least her feelings toward HK are unconditional. It must have been a painful request to make of your rival, and one who doesn't even treasure what you covet.

And I think a lot of people might kill me for this but... as much as I laughed at MJ's sudden lovesick puppy scenes, I just felt like it was a bit over the top. Slightly too kitsch for our crabby old man. The self-conscious "I'm not angry" retort to Lawyer Jang was in-character, and so were his ridiculous comments on the forums. But I would have thought his hallucinations about a SY-HK future would be him imagining tender moments between them and being pained by it. X=

I would also much much prefer it if MJ had walked over to SY and kissed her, instead of yanking her over. The editing for this scene: her surprise look and the sudden sideway fall into his arms felt a bit egocentric/sexist. I reckon it'll be more romantic if she had floated a little more slowly into his arms, with them maintaining eye contact throughout.

PS. how did he manage to train himself to write with his right hand so quickly? I tried to do that once but my handwriting was horrible and his seemed pretty decent!

okay, I must say, that they are striking the right balance of comedy and romance. I get what I want and my wife gets what she wants ... and as long as she's happy, there is peace in the house.

I was concerned that the rom-com was going to go out the window like The Prime Minister and I ... and just go down the well traveled angst filled melodrama path.

Though I do have to say that a "happy" ending is probably not in the cards. I'm reminded of Scent of a Woman where you know she will die ... he IS leaving ...

New prediction for Good Brother ... he'll defeat his evil brother and take on the responsibilty of rebuilding his family's buisness ... alone ... SY will also live out the rest of her life alone, happy, but alone because she'll never love anyone else.

(this is also me trying to convince myself of a happy ending, or i am just delusional).

It just seems so wrong for them NOT to end up together. What's the message here? Two very lonely individuals end up lonelier than they started. It'd just be so depressing.

Alright, this ep has been one of my favorites so far for the following reasons

1 - Lawyer Jang telling off Song-Yi's mom. (Love that guy).
2 - Min Joon picking a username. Actually. Make that #1. I had to keep rewinding the next scene because of all the chuckles.
3 - MIN JOON HANDING OVER A USB. Clap your hands if you clapped your hands!

This is a love story. But that right there was what !!I!! wanted to see. That was like was like, plot-porn. *Whistles*

But yeah, I was happy to see the episode NOT end with her just walking off... and then us having to frustratingly wait for him to somehow explain himself/win her back over/have her find out through clues that he didn't mean what he he said, several episodes later, or something. (Too much waiting. Just use your powers to glide her through mid-air so that you can kiss her!) Though I do hope she finds the clues to confirm it. (A la epilogue).

ep14 songyi said "even if i want to leave him, i cannot seem to take a step away"
ep15 songyi says something, then walk away, then turns back and talk, and then walk away again. for 3 times!!

ep14 songyi "even if i want to hate him, i cannot seem to hate him"
ep 15 songyi "i hate you"

ep 14 songyi "again and again i keep dreaming the dream that he loves me"
ep 15 minjoon kisses her first and confesses his love through that

am i thinking too much?!?!

I might be the only person in the world who doesn't like this drama, and it is not that I am not a romantic or that I don't like a romantic comedy but the fact that I don't like to be sold something and be given another, why I watch I am committed if I start something I like to finish it unless I can't take it any more... First people say this is a Sci Fi drama, it isn't and I realized Koreans failed at doing Sci Fi, they should stick to romantic comedies they do them fairly right, they have misses here and there but who doesn't. Then the comedy, I think she overacts and at times it is painful to watch her comedy, she is cute when she keeps it in check when she doesn't I fast forward her... This would be better as a crime drama with some fantasy elements, but then the alien part is just so dumb I think the writers themselves would like to forget they even added to the drama... I could watch an alien form living among us, an adorable cute alien form that might fall in love but this guy is completely clueless to human life and as someone said on another place he is learning to be human, if it took him 400 years here among us and he didn't learn he is not going to. Then the holes in the story my God are horrendous but I can live with some but there things that are breaking my head... the latest one, when he came 400 years ago on an expedition with a group of aliens to collect samples or to explore and he stayed by accident, who told him, he can't kill a human with his powers? Did they visit him after he was left by accident and he chose to stay? or Were they here before that time when he stayed and they knew that humans were harmless, which we aren't, and they told him you can't kill the humans there or you'll die... If they come on an expedition for the first time, how did they tell their people they can't kill with their powers whoever lives in the planet, what if they find ugly monsters that wanted to kill them and eat them, they didn't carry any weapons so how are they supposed to defend themselves? It is a bit cruel? He is defenseless on earth... does that make any sense? People might say it is a drama it doesn't have to make sense but it does...

In the introduction, they said it's a romantic-comedy drama, not Sci-Fi, not even a crime drama. Alien elements are just plots to make it a unique story (instead of varmpire or werewolf or what everelse).

As for the acting, i could not change your opinions but to me, she did a fantastic job here, for as long as nearly 1st half of the drama, she was the one to carry a large part of the show while waiting for enough needed plots for the main male character to step up later in the show. That, i'm not saying other characters needless. On the contracy, i love every single character in the drama, and i would not want even one to have less scences (even want them to be developped more). Would not like the comedy and romantic scences lessen, so with 20 eps, there isnt enough time for that). Or maybe, because in some scence the comedy act fit more in the big scence than in a tv show, that's why you felt she overacted?

I'm not sure what you mean by "completely clueless to human life"?

And yes, i find the "kill people with my power i will die too" is kind of a....uhm..... lame excuse. But, who to say that in 400 years living among human, he haven't tried to kill anyone with his power yet? And the lesson was learnt from that experience. Anyway, i am too, want to know why and how he come to this kind of knowledge (at least explain how he know). Hoping that they will be given later.

No you are wrong the genre according to all the sites is Sci Fi that is why I am watching since I am a Sci Fi nerd... but your rant is just BS come on the alien thing is the plot you are just rationalizing because you like it, which is fine but it makes no sense and if in 400 years he tried as you said then he would be dead, wouldn't he? so no he didn't try. As I said as a romantic comedy a crime story fine but please the alien thing is just some lame excuse for people to watch them and not other drama but writers become lazy and don't know how to develop a good plot. If he is really an alien he wouldn't be able to be with her period, why? because there is no way to turn an extra terrestrial being into a human being, no matter how much saliva or how long he stays here, that is impossible and the chances that they could mate are extremely unlikely still there might be a chance but to procreate they don't have the same chromosomes what are they going to have, that is why they don't think those things through. They go to the visuals and the extra stuff to distract some viewers.
The comedy thing we all have our own funny bone so if to people she is funny well she is. What I mean he is clueless to human life, you said it yourself he is almost gone for half of the drama...

Kaka, have to agree with you....PRICELESS! Hope it will end well.

And i mean good ending, will be so sad when it end, but our cast need to rest for next projects, so there that. ^___^

For the genre, I didn't read introduction from any website, but saw some videos, in those, the cast introduce the drama as romantic-comedy ( i think about 2 videos). So in term of gerne, i think it depend on the person who introduces it.

As for the "clueless", what i wrote above was not what you think i mean. Guess, because my English is not good, so i expressed wrongly. That's why, would like to ask you why you said “completely clueless to human life"! No offend to you, just for good critics!

Anyway, as you said, I really love this drama, which pull me back into Korea drama world after 5 years. So even though it has flaws, i still love it. You, on the orther hand, doesn't like because you doesn't. ^___^ You keep your, and i mine.

Hi Lupita, i have some insights..

"First, people say this is sci-fi drama, it isnt.."

I don't think YFAS sets out to solely be sci-fi drama but first and foremost it is a romantic comedy, followed by fantasy. The drama synopsis list their show as being a fantasy instead of sci-fi. I think there are some distinct differences between the two words. I feel like sci-fi is more related to a scientific-world view and rooted in the view of science (it could possibly be true), whereas fantasy is based on unrealistic qualities, coming from an imaginative source (universal laws are often times disregarded). I think of Fantasy and i think of shows like MGIF or Arang & Magistrate -- serves to spice up the story a bit, but not meant to be as scientifically insightful as, say, Joseon X-Files.
That's why i'm not picking apart YFAS in the fantasy department because the writer has consistently focused on developing our characters relationships instead of our alien's background. Seems like it's not this writer's penchant.
The heart of this drama lies in the relationship formed between two people who are worlds apart, lonely individuals who fall in love and form a beautiful bond. For me, this aspect of the drama holds more weight.
I find myself laughing, crying, and swooning over the characters for majority of the drama, so evil jae-kyung and random alien limitations (quite convenient) are things I can overlook. So as long as this show keeps dishing out its stronger points.

Sometimes you watch fantasy and you suspend logic. Heck, most of the time you watch k-dramas and suspend logic. As long as you the viewer find something worth your time or valuable it's easy to sit back and be entertained.

Also i remember you from the IHYV thread -- you strongly voiced your dislike there as well about the plot holes and how you found it to be a stupid drama. To me, sometimes i get IHYV vibes from this show so if you found IHYV to be a waste of your time i think YFAS would be the same. Goodluck and hopefully you find a k-drama you enjoy in near future! :)

Sorry everyone for the novel!

Yes, I love to work in Viki, translating help me keep up with my Spanish, the grammar rules and the spelling rules are so complicated and being from NY is really hard to keep it up but thanks to Viki I have to use them all the time so it is a win, win thing... Thanks.

I agree that IHYV is a stupid drama. I found the memory loss and courtroom drama were very hard to swallow. I just could not finished it. I think the drama was too overrated.
But we agree to disagree right?

But YFAS on the other is an absolute feast. Cant get enough JJH, her acting is superb and she is visually stunning.
I am foreseeing Daesang award for her.

Just completed marathon-ing the whole drama.
With Flying kiss, time-stopped kiss, 15 second seduction kiss, all of these in one drama, this may be the most romantic drama I've ever seen. <3

I did well postponing my marathon to after the one episode week. I couldn't have gone through it.

Kim Soo-Hyun is now in one of my favorites, and so is Jun Ji-Hyun.

Shin Sung Rok has done a wonderful job. I get shivers every time I see him, I am so afraid that I have to remind myself that it is a drama. Sheesh. Great job...

And I swear I'd become a psychopath and go on a killing spree if this has a sad end. For me, I want an extended version of MJ's dream as epilogue. I don't care if he loses his powers & stays on Earth, or he takes CSY with him. Just stay together and copulate like rabbits in the happily ever after. After getting terribly disappointed by PM&I, I need a beautiful dreamy ending in which no one leaves and everyone is happy.

So addicted! :3

I love this episode so much! Do Min Joon's raging jealousy is super hilarious! So out of character, but it shows how much he loves Song-Yi and his deep desire to be with her.

The ending scene is amazing since it's like a grand proposal scene where he turns on all the lights and fly her towards him! This 400-years-old alien sure know how to make a big gesture to his woman, I just wonder if he is ready for another high fever after that hot kiss.
