Shin Se-kyung up for leading role in Bride of the Water God 2017

I was sad when Moon Chae-won turned down the leading role in tvN’s upcoming manhwa remake Bride of the Water God 2017 over a week ago, but it looks like the production is back on track with an offer out to Shin Se-kyung (Six Flying Dragons) to headline in the title role. She’s considering favorably, as is Nam Joo-hyuk (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju), who seems a pretty sure bet to sign on as Ha-baek the water god.

The new drama adaptation is being called a spinoff rather than a faithful remake, since it takes the fantasy historical romance of the original manhwa and reworks it into a modern romantic comedy set in present-day Seoul. There’s some serious talent behind the scenes of the drama, with writer Jung Yoon-jung of Misaeng and Arang and the Magistrate penning the script, and PD Kim Byung-soo of Queen In-hyun’s Man and Nine directing. I’m totally skeptical of this spinoff idea, but I also can’t fathom this writer-director pair failing me, so I can’t help but be intrigued and excited for the drama to come.

In the original fantasy manhwa, villagers plagued by drought offer human sacrifices to a water god, and the heroine expects to die when she is sacrificed. Instead, the water god saves her and takes her as his bride, and she’s unaware of his curse that makes him appear as a child by day and an adult by night. It’s unclear how much of this will be retained in the spinoff drama, in which the heroine will be a neuropsychiatrist with her own practice, who is saddled with mountains of debt. She inherited most of that debt from her father, who always put humanity as a whole before his own family, and accrued the rest while putting herself through medical school.

I’ve never been very moved by Shin Se-kyung, but I also know that she’s been getting better with her recent projects and tapping into a warmer side; plus, she does seem a better fit in a romantic pairing with Nam Joo-hyuk than Moon Chae-won did. I still feel a little iffy about Nam Joo-hyuk headlining as the water god, because even though I loved him in Weightlifting Fairy, it was the first time I actually felt like he met a character that worked for him. I’ll just cross all fingers and toes that he’ll tap into something deeper, or that modern-day Ha-baek will be a puppyish water god.

Bride of the Water God 2017 will be fully pre-produced, and begins shooting in March for a broadcast later this year on tvN.

I've not seen the webtoon so can't comment on her "fit" with the character but she cannot emote. Even when crying, I feel she still has the same expression.

Shame because there are many other actresses in their 20s that could really use a leading role.

I was just rereading the TWDR recaps so I'm in an "I really like her" mood right now. :)

If the modern version replaces the rain with money (what humans sacrificed the heroine to get), does this make Habaek a loan shark in this version? :O

I think money to replace the rain will work, although I am very much intriguing with the original mahwa. I wish they can do this in both modern and sageuk setting. Maybe the curse is he will be a child during the day in sageuk setting and met the heroine in both setting.

I've never really figured out if I disliked her or her character so much in When A Man Loves. It was one of my first k-dramas and I just didn't get that whole show ...what I saw of it anyway.

I liked her in Sensory Couple and generally she seems to do well in historicals.

I just don't have really strong feelings about this one way or another. I have to give this drama a try because Arang and Misaeng are two favs of mine so I'm just stuck with whatever combo the drama gods give me.

Lol @kanz. I seem to recall people being impressed with Nam Joo Hyuk's scenes in the ealier episodes of Moon Lovers, esp when he confronted Hae Soo for the first time, plus he had that flowery and graceful look with his loog hair.

As for Shin Sae Kyung, I've not watched her in saeguk so I can't say, but apparently, she has improved. I feel ambivalent to her casting.

Agree. NJH displayed some acting range in WFKBJ, I was impressed by him in a few scenes and none of them were about puppy love (which he also did so well). If he keeps up this level, I can see him doing an impressive job as the water god :) And I found SSK quite likeable in The girl who sees smells.
For now, I will trust the team behind the production in that they know what they are doing. And since I like both actors, I will look forward to this. :)

Agree with you. Between these two, maybe I am slighly prefer Shin Se Kyung and wishing some other actor to be partnered with her, who has better acting. I just cannot picture these two as main leads in same drama. They dont have the powerful aura to carry the drama, especially if it is heavy /melo ones. If it is something fluffy romcom, maybe it works.

When A Man Loves or whatever the title - the two leads were really really bland. I dont want to see the same thing again.

I was excited over the adaptation but with the latest development, I have probably lose all the interest.

1) Nam Joo Hyuk is great in Weighlifting Fairy but admittedly, he is more or less the same level as Seo Kang Joon. Given the perfect role, he could definitely deliver but with that limited acting range, I am not sure how he could pulled off such larger than life character.

2) Shin Se Kyung never striked me as a powerful actress. Most of the time, I find her rather bland on screen. But she has improved a lot in "Six Flying Dragon". Still, I will only watch her if the drama premise intrigued me.

3) The total shifting of fantasy from sageuk to present day not selling at all to me and please, I have had enough of doctors and heroine with mountain of debts.

Now, I only have faith in the pairing up of the writer and the PD. Come to think of the actors being extended the offers, I am puzzled if this production is on tight budget or what?

I don't even consider myself some big fan, I just get excited to spot potential and lament its waste.

I think she should focus on Chungmuro and go for roles like that of Kim Tae Ri, Go Ah Sung, Han Ye Ri e.t.c though I don't think she wants to.

0

I actually prefer her in serious role (GFB) much more than any romcom or playing cute heroine. So I think maybe she should do movies. Even if she is playing small roles in movies probably better. I dont know if she wants it or not, but I believe her agency is powerful enough to get her projects.

0

Han Ye-ri, Go Ah-sung, Kim Go-eun, Kim Tae-ri etc started their career in Chungmuro beside Go Ah-sung. They made a name for themselves as the young film starlets before they started doing dramas. Kim Tae-ri hasn't done a drama yet.

I think Lee Yubi is better off trying to establish herself in dramas. I'm not sure she can compete with the established 20s in films. Shim Eun-kyung seems to be the busiest young actor in Chungmuro and it's hard to compete with that kind of talent. There is also not enough roles for their age group to go around.

0

I actually think she can? In terms of acting, that is. She just needs opportunity and to choose the right projects, maybe go the way of Kang Hana. I mean, if Han Hyo Joo can find a career in Chungmuro( I've heard not so stellar things about her acting, personally haven't seen her in anything except Always) then she can.

Maybe she should start with indie directors.

This part "in which the heroine will be a neuropsychiatrist with her own practice, who is saddled with mountains of debt" already turns me off before I even look at who is the main lead.

If there is no turning into child and becomes adult at night and the whole fantasy world building, there is no point of watching this drama.

Now you have Nam Joo hyuk and Shin, this is not a good track. With or without Misaeng writer.

Since you probably looking for younger actors and not big names, how about give these two the chance? I dont know how much these two resemble with the manhwa, but since this is spinoff remake, and if you want to make this drama half sageuk and half modern, these two will be great.

@Emanresu&@earthna
You’re both right. People quickly jump on her acting and say she is bad because of when a man loves and people might disagree with me but SSK was better than SSH in that drama and her character was interesting too. My mom hated her character, but I loved it and empathized a lot more with Mi Do.. Also she dared to date SHINee oppa and got a lot of hate because of that...

Yes, contrary to most people I actually also sympathised with Mi Do and could see why she acted and felt the way she did.
On one side I think the problem is that Mi Do had flaws that were a bit "too real" / verged too much on the inconvenient truth about people's behaviours that we'd usually like to avoid facing in dramas.
On the other, I think the fact that the audience was able to pry into SSH's character's real motives and personality from the start (i.e. that he was actually genuinely nice, warm and selfless) - which Mi Do couldn't for most of the drama - also made it that most audiences failed to understand her feelings of suspicion,, uncertainty, uncomfortableness around him, when putting myself in her shoes I think I'd feel exactly the same lol (I wondered at the time if feeling I'd act the same made me a bad person as people were quite harsh on her actions lol)

0

@celine You should watched ML. That's the best kdrama so far. I am still re-watching it alternately with current dramas. By doing that, the more I realised how good Moon Lovers is.

0

Me too I am still disappointed they took out those elements from the story.
I wish that if they have to modernize it to at least show both worlds. What if he lives in a palace that is from that era with all the fantasy elements from the manhwa and she also lives there with him but they strike a deal and he lets her go out into the modern world to work or see her friends. It would be funny to see him get used to her world and her get used to his. This way we would still get to see the georgeous gardens and costumes yet it wouldn't take over the whole budget.

Expressionless, theatrics.. Overacting? Your description of SSK was contradicting.

Theatrical is ideal for Saguek. Many Korean lead actors don't have this skill. You can only find few actors who can vividly show emotions.

For SSK, her expression is monotonous.

And for NJH in Moon Lovers, Well..Saguek is not for anyone to do. But he was all riht in CITT. But Moon Lovers as drama was really good. He is not the main lead in that drama anyway.

I'm quite bored of shows that actually remakes entirely exactly or at least 90% of the content from novel, web story etc.. yes I'm looking at China show especially haha

But it seems like I'm pretty much upset too if the story deviates too much from the original.. can it still retain what makes the original material interesting??..

(let's see how it goes.. though I think messing around with the original plot or even bring more content or other side content into it might just make things backfire even more if it's done unsatisfactory.. but Koreans love doctor drama right? Maybe this is a pretty safe bet after all..)

I'm sorry to say I'm not very hopeful for this, but I'll still watch it just in case they manage to come up with something amazing.

Some of what is below could be considered spoilers, depending on how much of the source material stays intact--you've been warned.

I also have to agree in regards to the world building nightmare with the choices they've made as to changes. I know it will likely only include the intro part of the original, and we won't really get into the war or anything because...only so many episodes.

I feel like every time I'm reading a report on this show, it's wandering farther and farther away from what makes the original so interesting.

Spinoff? What does that even mean at this point? They've already changed:
- the time period;

- pushed the genre to romcom;

- the location (seriously, Seoul? And is it instead of the village or the Water Kingdom?);

- female lead has a long term schooling occupation, so definite adult
--so it's likely they drop the boy by day/man by night unless they only play it out for comedy;

- I guess they're trying to link the debt stuff with how the father kept selling her (and younger sis) as tribute in the original.

*shakes head, wondering*

Honestly, I was ok with either MCW or NJH to bow out. I was just not feeling that pair that I was okay with either one of them turning down the offer. Now that it was MCW who bowed out (it seems the team is looking for younger cast), I see SSK as a good match for NJH.

As for acting, I personally find both of them to be alright. They are not wow, but I've seen improvement in both of them. They most certainly have a long way to go and still need improvements and I'm willing to give them that chance.

I am looking forward to this because I am a fan of the writer and PD. I hope their combined powers bring out the best in the acting of SSK and NJH should they end up as the leads.

As long as no one confim, they will let us keep imagining other actor/actress for the role. Better confirm soonest possible so most of us can decide to watch or not. Otherwise I'll let my imagination keeps working. LOL

Interesting though because we only got one name for the lead guy. No other actor was mentioned. Only Joohyuk got the offer. Also, they replaced MCW and said they're looking for someone in her 20s. I do feel he's pretty much set at this point, but I still want a clear cut confirmation. lol

Yes I want the clear and official confirmation, no other actor was mentioned aside from Nam Joo Hyuk so most probably he will accept it. I think the writer probably in the process to write the script and adjust the role which is fit with Nam Joo Hyuk before officially announce it. Maybe.

OH sh*t...if she signs on, then I'm not watching. Sorry Nam Joo Hyuk! I was gonna watch after seeing him in Weightlifting and looking forward to see if his acting really did improve, like it did in Weightlifting, but SSK is someone who has never really improved so umm...I'll pass

My first SSK drama was Fashion King, i watched the drama because of YAI and then I saw her.. I had no idea who she was and never bothered to look her up.. watching her in FK was sooo painful because of her wood acting.. i was cursing all the time she came on screen and ff most of her scenes alone.. i thought it was only me who felt that way but later found out how the majority hates her.. well, i don't really hate her, just her acting.. then i watched Sensory Couple because NGM was in it.. i thought, her acting in that drama was tolerable so i guess need to check Water God for the story .. who knows, maybe she will surprise us this time :)

Crystal plays Hira (Mura), the owner of the second divine stone, the god of hydrangeas in the play. I have been living among people for hundreds of years, and I have been living in an actress's life mainly because I have been circulating in beautiful beauty. Shin Se Kyung! Yup, I agree that her pairing with Nam Joo Hyuk looks suitable and she is more physically-and-age-matched than Moon Chae Won herself honestly (In fact, I am happy she turned it down). I love Shin Se Kyung in Six Flying Dragons (2015) so much and I think she can act well with Nam Joo Hyuk then hiii

If Nam Joo Hyuk is seriously considering it now, I will be happy to see him acting again!

Overall I am happy for Shin Se kyung and Nam Joo Hyuk! Peace ?

It was started with a bride of an alien in my love from the star. Then goblin's bride. And now a bride of a water god. K-dramas sure know that we have a deficiency on human-male number they starting an inter-species (or rather inter-universe) romance.
I'm starting to worried about my own future groom.

LOL this comment. Add bride of someone from the past.

At least in Legend of the Blue Sea a mermaid became the bride of a man. And My Girlfriend is a Gumiho help balance this out.

I bet Namoo Actors thinks Moon Chae Won is too good for this but they still want to keep the role for another artist under the company. Shin Se Kyung debuted years before Nam Joo Hyuk but she did not show any improvement until The Girl Who Sees Smells. Before that her acting is really tiring to watch. Her acting now is still on the same league as Nam Joo Hyuk only.

"Improvement" is what to hope for from these two. I still don't like to see mediocre actors taking lead roles for sort of "practicing their skills". They could have taken minor or supporting roles.

I'm glad Moon Chae Won dropped this. This rushing casting is such a mess.

With the mentioning of Nam Joo Hyuk....I hope this will be a rom-com though I know, the manhwa is nowhere to be categorized as rom-com. And with Shin Se Kyung possibly on-board, please make it a rom-com. These two actors can act but only as far as their limited acting range. And can I say they both appear to be pretty boring on screen.

I have a soft spot for Shin Se Kyung. She often plays unlikable, no non-sense characters and sometimes comes off as stiff and unlikable but she portrays her characters well. She isn’t perfect or the greatest actress, but she is believable and doesn’t deserve the hate targeted at her. I guess people started seeing that she improved in Girl Who Sees Smells only because there her character was more likable.
She would be actually perfect for this role, she has a lot of experience in sageuk and also looks ethereal

Both can be good and bad depending on the character they portrayed.
Joo hyuk is good at his supporting role in Cheese in the trap, Surplus Princess. He acted Joon Hyung fit like a glove. That role tailor for him so he could used his skill at best
While he is really bad in Who are you and Moon Lovers.
Same as Shin se kyung.
I have a love-hate impression about her
I hate her so much after Fashion King and When the man loves a woman. Then come to like her in Tree with Deep roots, The girls who see smell and especially in Six Flying dragons, i was impressed. She is sweetheart in real life too. She is quite brave to choose the roles that require body exposure and might get lots of hate (cheaters ...)
Actually They have skills but still limited. Lot of limitations
So if the writing is far from their acting range, they will be lost and the result is obviously a mess.
Otherwise if it's within their range , they will do well. Even really well
So it's like real gamble. They need good writing and great acting partner to shine.
Visually they are matched with each other. Also their image fit with the webtoon character which is the reason they being scouted

I really love both the writer and the PD. They wrote and directed my favourite dramas. Most of them are from TvN productions
Will they create another magic?

I am still disappointed that they got rid of the fantasy elements. And it's spin off of the webtoon. Why!!!!!

After reading comments about Gong-myung and Krystal being offered roles in the drama so I searched about their characters on Naver.
I am okay with the offer of the second lead to Gong Myung as Bi-ryum since he was good as Ja-kyung, the loyal puppy and bodyguard to Princess Jungmyung in Splendid Politics (according to the short character profiles I read in a blog, Bi-ryum's god character is like a protector to Muha and he pities her unrequited love for Ha-baek so I guess he likes her.) and his other roles in drama set in contemporary times.
I don't really know how to feel about Krystal as Mu-ha because the latter is kind of a bad-ass, warrior character in the manhwa and Krystal mostly played sassy roles (still she was likeable) and it would wrong to reinvent the character into a sass.

I guess the spin-off makes sense since the original story (*spoiler*) ends with an open ending in the modern era with Ha-baek feeling jealous at the sight of the reincarnated So-ha, the female lead, with her boyfriend. The reincarnated So-ha is in college so the drama is timeline-wise in creating a setting where the heroine has a profession. However, I do not like the idea of dragging the unreturned love of second leads and making it mainly romance, compared to the epic fantasy in the manhwa.

Omona. So that's the ending? huhu. I haven't checked it out in a while. What happened to their child (her name I think is similar to lotus) then?

I suppose Soah was meant to die after all since she wasn't able to eat the fruit (of everlasting life). But did they got back together after they met? I presume a lot of chaos happened in the realm of gods after Soah returned,no?

BTW, you're right on the 2nd leads unrequited love they shouldn't have emphasize the story on in it coz the manhwa focused more on many things. ;-)

Im actually pretty excited abt this pairing! Even though many seem to have doubts abt nam joo hyuk's acting chops, i'll be glad if he really takes up the role bcs you dont become a good actor overnight right? So im looking forward to see him bloom and grow as an actor by taking up more projects to expand his acting range. As for shin se kyung, i think that she has shown improvement in her acting and im pretty excited to see her in a new drama. I hope that this drama will receive a lot of love <3

SSK's not a good actress, but she's likable in some of her roles despite that. I like her well enough. Her and NJH are on the same level acting-wise if you ask me, though I like her a little bit more solely because I've yet to see NJH in a role I liked him in. They fit, and would probably make an interesting pair, though the drama clearly isn't looking to hit it out of the park in terms of acting.

Still haven't moved on from Scarlet Heart so IU please??? I know she just had her hair cut bu I really think she can pull this role. The LJK is practically the best option for Habaek in terms of character, except that he's supposed to look like 17 something years old. But for the female lead, IU please? I am a fan of this manhwa and its really gonna upset me if casting isn't good. No offense to SSK and fans but though she can shed a tear, her facial expressions don't change.

oof! everyone's busy talking about how the male lead is not good enough or how the female lead puts them down....and here I am..all excited to see if the drama goes with the curse story or not..just to see how the interactions would go between the leads..as in the female lead with NJH and his child counterpart..
It would be hilarious if the heroine is all stiff and rude towards the adult but goes full on aegyo in front of the child :D I wonder who the child actor would be though!!
Also..Since NJH is playing Water-god,in modern days...is he going to be a Swimmer again?? If so..it'd be a Hatrick!!!

Color me black, but this is the actress that I have unreasonable dislike since when a man loves..
Is it her acting, her face or what? I really don't know..
I tried watching six flying dragons since db beanies gave it great reviews but drop it coz of her..
I could tolerate Suzy, iu, or even jin so yeon but not her..
Maybe the problem is me?
Food for thought...
