Origin of the Beanie: Brief updates and a call for submissions

It feels like I’m on Dramabeans 24/7, yet there’s still not enough hours in the day. Between the editing, the admin, and the drama watching, where does the time go? Month by month, drama by Dramabeans, it’s already August! We have a few short updates to share with everyone, but again I have to first say how much I appreciate your presence, your thoughts, and your love for Dramabeans.

Beanie Origins: What’s your story?

We’d love to hear your Dramabeans origin story and include it in our next support post — really! Tell us how you discovered DB, and all the juicy (beanie) details. If you’d like to share, pop over and leave us a message with the subject line: Beanie Origins. If you have a registered Dramabeans account, include your handle so we can link to it. (Word count: 500)

Getting technical

  • Our video player has been getting a bit of a tune up, and it’s nearly ready to re-launch, this time with full episodes of dramas and varieties. Watch this space!
  • If you see spam, or any comments that are hateful, explicit, and all that bad jazz, please tag @db-staff so that we can call in the calvary.

Premium supporter updates
Thank you for your continued support! We’ve gone from zero to almost 200 supporters and I really can’t say enough how grateful the team is for your support. If you’re willing and able to support us, you can do so with one-time purchase, or annual and monthly options. You help us keep the site up and running!

Number of premium supporters as of July 30, 2020

BeanieBoxes

Don’t sleep on our BeanieBox options! We have four different boxes to choose from: Deluxe, Premium, Coffee Lover, and Noodle Lover. The last two are our newest options, with the Coffee Lover box having enough coffee to last you an entire month (i.e. you’ll get 20 to 30 sticks of coffee plus sweet snacks). The Noodle Lover box is for those of us who can’t live without savory goodness; it comes with 2 to 3 cup noodles, 7 to 10 individual ramyun packs, and post-noodle snacks.

If you choose the monthly subscription option for the Coffee Lover, or the Deluxe BeanieBox, you will receive exclusive Dramabeans swag.

Here’s the TL;DR

If you’re able to give financial support, becoming a premium supporter would be a huge help to us. Benefits include an ad-free Dramabeans experience, a virtual supporter badge (you can toggle it on and off), two months of KOCOWA for free, and the eternal gratitude of entire Dramabeans team.

Looking for a different way to help? You can also subscribe to the aforementioned BeanieBox to get your snacks, ramyun, and caffeine fix. (If you’re not located in one of the countries we ship to, help us spread the word!)

Join us on social! You can follow our official Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram accounts and interact with our content directly from there.

We’re only four months away until a new year. Thank you for being here with us through rain or shine, sickness or health, drama smiles or drama tears (the good kind of tears). You’re what make Dramabeans great!

I don't remember how I found out about DB, so I might have to claim ~dramatic amnesia~ as my origin story. :P

I don’t remember either, because I lurked for several years until the finale of DOTS compelled me to write my first beanie rant. 😂

Shocking to think 2020 will be over soon-ish 😱

Oh my 😅😅😅😅

I know for sure that I became a registered Beanie and made my first comment even before the website overhaul, so I’m not sure if those comments made before the wrbsite changes were carried over and accounted for 🤔🤔🤔

2

... just checked my first comment...

It was Vampire Detective with Lee Joon. 😅🤦🏻‍♀️😂

4

Wow, really? Mine was Sassy Go Go 😂

3

@bebeswtz if you used the same username and email as before the overhaul you will find your old comments too.

4

@wishfultoki
Good to know 🥰🥰🥰

2

I just checked and mine and it was for my rant in The Time I've Loved You all the way back in 2015. I know I for sure was on here before then though, maybe a year or so back

2

I didn't know this.... I just checked and my first comment was in 2007 for Coffee Prince and I commented how I refreshed DB for two hours waiting for the latest recap (LOL!)... Back in the days of waiting for subs, the recaps were heaven sent....

2

My first comments were for School 2015. Don't remember when I started lurking but I think is was at least a year before. Can't make up 500 words of "don't remember", so I'll just plead (d)amnesia here.

O god, 500 words only 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ forgot to count. Can't wait to read your story @lordcobol 😁

@fydea
No, probably not going to submit an entry, but anyone who cares to see my early comments can look under the School 2015 recaps (especially the later episodes)

Pretty much everything else I have to say about my history is already on DB, mostly here in a "Get to know..." post.

Wohooo. Beanie origins! I remember how and when I started on the DB fanwall. I don't really recall when I found Dramabeans though. I'm pretty sure I lurked during the early DB days as I started watching dramas around the same time. Looking back...mannnn....I've watched Kdramas for so long. Maybe too long? Hahahahaha 🤣

Serial lurker on recaps til the temporary disappearance of DB overlords - no amount of refreshing would make them appear! sobs! —made me become a serial lurker on the fan wall.

It was probably (absolutely!) Beanies’ witty banter that tempted me to join the fun and end my lurking days. Now i’m diligently whiling (lol) my time away as an Errand Boy/Girl in pursuit of the Ultimate Rooftop digs.

Anyone can shed some light on what the beanie level names mean? I am curious!

It’s based on characters/tropes/things found in k-dramas. Sometimes it references a specific drama, like ‘Goblin’s Underpants’ = Goblin.

@sicarius - I love your list so much! it's fun just reading it. I wanted to add one show to "Unemployed Slacker in a Sparkly Tracksuit" - Warm and Cozy, where there's a brief scene with one of the brothers. I forget when exactly.

@sicarius I commented a thing under your drama masterlist thingy (Dal-ja's Spring for a classic Contract Girlfriend, what a surprise I offer up that drama)

Also re: your document question about Top Star, maybe they added those higher levels later but the drama Top Star came out after the site redesign so idk if it actually corresponds to that drama

I forgot to say thank you for this btw. I think you're right about Top Star; I will add it for dramas it applies to but not as the drama it comes from in the definition.

I'm another one to fish out the KTrope Card "Amnesia", and I can't even blame a ToD. My earliest comment is from 2015 in a She Was Pretty recap. I was watching kdramas well before then, but honestly do not remember at this moment how or when I stumbled upon DB. It's likely I lurked for a while, trying to get a sense of the community before joining officially.

I am guessing that a lot of us lurked here way before posting. I think I was posting anonymously and then I had probably lost one user account before settling with this one.
The first post I see I did was on the "Greatest Love" which makes sense because that one is a masterpiece meta. Dramas like that are the reasons I go back over and over again here. Dramabeans was essential in explaining the cultural context in the dramas for me. Learning about the references and connecting the dots transformed the dramas from something that just gave me the "feels" to fully formed art pieces that could be picked and analyzed.

I remember stumbling upon Dramabeans when I started watching The Slingshot/Story of a Man, starring the late Park Yong-ha, Kim Kang-woo, and Park Si-yeon. My boo, Park Ki-woong, had a smaller part in there as well. The drama originally aired in 2009, but I believe I watched it on t.v. some time in 2011. I somehow came across beautifully written episode recaps by @girlfriday @javabeans. I wasn't really checking out the entire site, but I was avidly reading the recaps of every episode I watched. I ended up bookmarking the page with all the recaps, lol. The Summer of 2011 was when I began to be a more avid watcher of kdramas. I had finished my draining master's program and just wanted to relax. I had been watching dramas before then (Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese), but I never had a whole lot of free-time before that Summer. I'm sure it was not that long after reading those recaps that I began to visit the Dramabeans site for other things. I've been on this site ever since. I must admit, however, that I don't go on everyday anymore. Today is the first time I've posted anything here after a few weeks of being absent. Anyway, that's my story. :)

I remember mine. Being laconic is something I can't do and I don't have time right now for more than a crude post, and because I'm feeling like sharing I'll share it here and not send an official post?🤣.
Finger-counting backwards to my school years, it was 7/8/6 years ago, when my peers became MLFAS crazed. The "all-knowing" kids with facilities found streaming sites and watched it, and the majority of others borrowed the downloaded vids on pens and stuff to go home and watch. I was interested in the plot from what my friend narrated to me, and I
1. Didn't necessarily feel I wanted to watch it
2. Was too proud to borrow it from those girls
3. Didn't have a device to watch anyway😂
My parents only used those small button phones back then, and I only had internet connection via Mobile data of mom's phone. (Now guys I know this sounds unbelievably backwardish and fairytale like, "You're talking about 7 yrs back not 20!", but believe it or not this was the truth. Some of my friend's parents had smartphones and blackberries I guess, and we simply didn't. There wasn't any need.)
Back to the story.
I remember recling on my parents' bed and looking up my love from another star and coming across DB. How I fell in love with GF and JB's writing, the way I felt like I'm watching the drama with how unbelievably perfect those recaps were. How I devoured all the episodes. How I was soon updated and matching those girls at my school with my newfound knowledge.
Dramabeans made me feel special😂. I was on the cloud nine, feeling that only I had the key to this Secret Garden. The next year parents bought me a PC with internet, and I watched the episodes I read on YouTube, but that did not made me feel high like reading recaps did. It was a special kind of secret thrill. We still didn't have smartphones, and I didn't feel as comfortable reading on the PC screen, so I continued on with the button-phone reading. The next year dad bought an htc smart phone. I was on a personal mission to read each and every recap of a drama that I felt was up to my tastes, and I devoured everything with such an ocd tendency. Recaps, Award show recaps, JB's and GF's yellings on techincal fails of the site...you name it. My parents despaired, my grades suffered, I continued to read in secret till late night. At least my English vocabulary improved lol. I think DB is at least 30% responsible for my current (albeit mediocre) English.
I think I didn't look back till I got 80% content read. While my peers hunted for drama streaming sites, I read.
My 1st comment was on Mirror of the Witch I guess. I remember swearing that I wouldn't return until my exams are over. I thought typing that out for everyone to see would make me keep that oath.(Spoiler-I didn't. I stalked and didn't comment lol. When MLSHR aired I regretted that oath because I couldn't join all the fun.)
After exams, I made an account and saw my 1st ever notification from @pakalanapikake , on...

....that Mirror of the Witch comment so long ago🤣.
The rest is history.
I became a regular beanie for few years.
And then I got burdened with Uni.
And I was starting to feel "saturated".
And the quality content of kdramaland decreased.
And then The Untamed happened.
Then Discord happened.
At the bottom of the rabbit hole I found another rabbit hole🤣🤣🤣.
That's all!

P.s- One good thing that came from this long quarantine period is children got more acquainted with Technology, what's with it becoming a necessity because of online classes.
Kids who are now in the same age as I was when I 1st discovered DB know a great deal of things and beyond than I did back then.🤣
Even the hermits had to adapt to the magical touch screens and all because there isn't much you can do with a button phone while quarantined.
I still do have a great deal of respect for button phones tho. Dad's nokia was super sturdy and wouldn't break a thing even if you drop it from 10 fts. Poor thing's keypad malfunctioned last year, and we had to say RIP even though the softwares functioned well.
I remember the new DB website refusing to open in mom's old phone too and feeling quite sad and nostalgic. :(
