My local chain grocery store for a while has provided bad produce. I picked up some raspberries that were fuzzy bland and tasteless. They were imported from Mexico. The next time, I decided to get frozen ones. I opened to package to find it not frozen berries but a red mush like the entrails from a slasher movie. I forgot to read the packaging; it was from Chile. It confirmed what I knew for years that the US has been exporting a lot of its domestic produce to get premium prices. Last Saturday night, I drove by an independent green grocery store which I had not been in for at least a decade. It was owned by a wholesale produce company. I went in to find the produce picked over - - - so I carefully went item by item to find California strawberries and fruits that were firm without blemishes.

Since this grocery had a several ethic aisles from Europe and Asia, I turned the corner to find a supporting character from the drama “A Killer’s Shopping List:” the original Choco-Pie. I had to get a box to try. The comparison is to a moon pie. The Korean version was more cakey than marshmallow. It is OK, but nothing to kill for.

Just swinging by the OT to say: I love how international Dramabeans is! It’s so great to connect with people from all over the world and to celebrate something we all have in common. Respect to all the beanies who are writing in a foreign language. I feel so lucky to have English as my first language. I’d be gutted if we couldn’t communicate so thanks for making the effort to write your feelings on this site. I’ll try to learn more languages!

Thank you for acknowledging what a special community this is. I am so happy we get to meet people from across the globe to share our thoughts on all things K drama, especially as most of us don’t have anyone in our local community to chat to about this area of our life.

I'm happy that you find this place a happy and safe place like I do. It's true that I still miss many Beans who have disappeared in the last few years, but we do have new Beanies who keep adding so much to this space. 🙂🌷🥰

I still hope that many of them will return when it's the right time for them...

Yes I noticed the profiles come up on the Beanies spotlight and then click to see their last entry was in 2017 and I wonder what happened. I think some have left for good but some do occasional comments so I wonder if they are not commenting any more and just popping in to read a recap and see what’s happening.

Required fields are marked *

I think I can understand this. Many years ago, there were fewer dramas available for international audience so fewer dramas to recap, I think, so the work could be done without it being too taxing for each recapper (I think DB had more recappers back then, too). Nowadays, there are more and more dramas available and people can just choose what to watch, so I think it’s become somewhat difficult for the current recappers to be able to choose the ones that the majority watch. Also, many times what seems like a good premise turns into something else within the first few eps and Beans just drops it. I think these are part of the reasons why many are not here anymore. The close-knitted community this place once was became more dispersed and it’s only natural. We do have new Beanies though!

English isn't my first language. I'm not good at it and sometimes i have hard time expressing my feelings because of language barrier. But i'm very happy to be in this community. Even though i don't actively engage in many conversations, it still feels nice to read beanies' comments and posts💚

I used to asked my sister how to write some things or to check my comments but that was too stressful so now I just write whatever. I don't know how many mistakes I do while writing, but if people understand what I'm trying to say that's enough (even if later I'm like "that's not how you say it").

This site feels really safe.

Do you know the K-drama that I found had the most satisfying ending this year? 'Ghost Doctor'. It was a just-okay drama without much to praise or complain about but it stuck the landing, which improved the whole series in retrospect. Compare that to the dramas this year that had so badly messed up their finale that it spoiled the show overall. 'Lovers of the Red Sky', 'Woori The Virgin', 'Business Proposal', even 'My Liberation Notes' to some degree.I think I'm going to start watching more mediocre dramas, the sort that can afford to give you the ending it ought because the studio's less likely to meddle with the script.

I liked Ghost Doctor too.

I agree lots of low key dramas are know what’s expected and just do that without trying to be clever and risking failing to deliver. It’s so frustrating investing time in a drama and then have a rubbish ending ruin the whole experience.

@unniunni No worries about My Liberation Notes. A lot of MLN lovers here of which I'm one didn't like the ending and we were very vocal about it. But it doesn't depreciate MLN at all. I recommend you complete it.

I think in my case this is also true to a certain extent. I remember feeling burnt by the last few eps of A Business Proposal which affected my overall experience of watching the show in general. I just wish it stuck with its quirks and everything and became another gem which.. didn't happen. On the other hand, I have another show that many perceive it as being mediocre "Shooting Stars" and I just love how easy it was to watch it. There was nothing spectacular about it and that and how the show didn't try to be something it wasn't actually made it a very fun and wholesome watch for me.

When a show doesn't try too hard, I feel like I can enjoy it so much more. I hope there will be more shows that are like that in the future.

I loved Shooting stars because it was a low key fun watch that’s why the couple of episodes when I felt it went rogue with the heavy content felt an unnecessary diversion from what it did best. I was so glad when it came back on track and finished well.

It’s a great gateway drama, well done on this achievement! I found it hard to recommend others as it’s so unique so a lot of the others you needed to be more aware of K drama tropes to understand. I had some success with Reply 1988 but not Be melodramatic and Hospital Playlist which I thought would be easy to get into with humour and character focus covered.

Yes, Business Proposal and Our Beloved Summer would be excellent and fun options. Unfortunately, they don")'t have Netflix, so I'm sticking to stuff available on Viki

1

Oh, Waikiki 2! I should probably try that one out with my own kids. They loved Waikiki 1

1

Yes, thinness is a thing in k-ent. I don't want to put it all on SK, naturally. Fashion in western countries is equally obsessed with thin young bodies. But, yeah, yikes. Today I started watching Queendom 2 with my oldest, because we both enjoy the performances and the amazing outfits and styling. But at some point I felt like I had to comment that most of the performers are the same size, give or take some height differences, and how unhealthy and narrow-minded it is to expect everybody to look the same 🙄

2

What about going with a web drama they are easy to find on YouTube and are really quick watches with their short episodes I liked A-Teen and Beautiology they are mainly school orientated with friendships and couple relationships. Splash splash love time travel. Imitation about the challenges of being an Idol.

I didn't think of webdramas, thanks for the tips!

1

For ages I only had access to YouTube so watched loads of web dramas, KBS specials were also a good option. I ended up with Viki because I could not find Mr Queen anywhere else and the clips I saw were so funny I just couldn’t resist, then I watched What’s wrong with secretary Kim as that one also had postings on YouTube.

Viki has some great dramas so once they have got into it I think they will probably just start exploring and if they know about the option to drop if it isn’t working for them I think they will be fine.
I also alternate between Netflix and Viki monthly subscriptions depending on who has the dramas I ‘need’ to see. Twenty five, Twenty one got me back on Netflix after I dropped it for months to stick with Viki content. Depending on their subscription level they may decide to do the same thing.

0

Viki always cracks me up with the live comments. I used to watch everything on Viki when I was a teen and You're Beautiful had some AMAZING reactions. (I mean, the pig nose, the vomit kiss - there were some class comments)
I've somehow blocked ads on Chrome now, though, so Viki won't let me play free dramas. Any tips?

2

Viki calls me out for using a VPN so I have to make sure its off. I don’t have any tips on how to access free content as I have always paid after I realised the perks on the paid version.

1

@jance, you're not alone in your enjoyment of Viki comments! Sometimes they get a bit overwhelming- like, I hate the hate on female characters -, but there are a lot of funny or just amusingly deranged ones. And some dramas really benefit from the comments -the wild comments definitely helped get to the end of Lovers of Red Sky 😂 Wish you get to fix your problem with Viki. Maybe using another internet browser?

Panshel, you made me take pause, because I feel like we may have different sensibilities and opinions about this. In our media landscape, Naughty cell is extremely tame. Been scrolling through Viki's site and I came up with some ideas:
30 but 17
True Beauty
Extraordinary You
Nokdu Tale
I think that picking something light and with a youthful cast is probably the way to go

0

Ok, I told them 30 but 17 and Nokdu Tale. As @reply1988 pointed out, I think the best way to ease them into dramaland is to avoid trope-heavy dramas. Still, we come from a soap opera culture, which kind of makes the jump into kdrama easier 😂

0

30 but 17 I think is a good call. I loved that especially the younger brother’s crush on her it was so sweet. The funny housekeeper adds to the humour. The only trope that may be an issue is moody male lead syndrome which may not go down well.

True Beauty with the intro to family dynamics might be good too but the break up and intro to second lead syndrome may need some prep. The boxer shorts dancing though is a gem.

2

I'm not evek sure if I watched TB until the end. The bullying was a bit too much for me, but I remember the drama as overall fluffly. But I still lol everytime Okey dokey pops up in my playlist

0

What about weightlifting fairy or do you think its too advanced as they are university age so the bullying weight issues are more adult?

1

I liked 30 but 17! I'm not sure about a Sageuk, though (e.g. Nokdu). It might need quite a bit of background...

1

I also thought of WLFKBJ! It's a lovely drama, but I found it jarring that so much of it was about weight, and it just didn't add up because She. Was. Thin.
I adore Lee Sung Kyung and she was charming in this, but her looks simply didn't match the character's concerns. Drama made me feel like either she or I was having cognitive dissonance 😂

1

🤣🤣🤣
But on a serious note it is sad that we have to vet these shows for dodgy messages for fear of their impact on vulnerable young minds. It is a shame the pressure is on those in the limelight including actors to be pressured in this way and I felt that they were trying to expose the teacher as being out of order with her constant comments and show how it had caused mental health issues.

I have been looking at the actor playing the male lead in Jinxed at first and his Adam’s apple seems to be really prominent, he is very slim and it makes me wonder if he is dieting or physically unwell. It may of course just be normal for him. I am worrying about the female leads arms as they are skinny too. I am hoping that these are not outcomes of trying to stay relevant.

1

@reply1988, you mean Na In Woo? I noticed that too, but in his case it's probably because he's overworked. He's got credited for 6 dramas for the years 2021-2022, including River where the Moon Rises straight after Mr Queen, where he took over the role mid-production and filmed his scenes for the whole thing in 5 weeks.
Not that there isn't this huge pressure to conform extremely strict beauty standards, so probably that plays a role too, of course. I was also surprised at how tiny and fragile Seohyun looks in JAF. From Love and Leashes I had the impression that she was a bit taller and stronger, but maybe it's just the contrast with the very tall and broad shouldered Na In Woo

1

I have watched four of the six dramas and don’t remember his appearance standing out they were mainly minor characters as opposed to having the main lead in this one and Her bucket list. He may have been more covered in those roles so it was less noticeable or it got worse as you say due to overwork.

I also saw love unleashed what a disappointment that was compared to the webtoon where the online friendships and impact on in person relationships was explored in more detail. She looked healthier in that one.

there should be a set retirement age for SCOTUS -- but actually for ALL of the senate and house seats as well!!! i mean, there are 80+ year olds (majority OLD MEN) making decisions for our children's futures - not to mention our own president, but...

5

I have been thinking about this all day. Obama said in his book he asked RBG to step down because who knows who her seat would go to and she wouldn't. I love RBG as much as the next but I keep thinking if she had stepped down someone-- not even liberal but someone human--could have taken her seat.
It's 2022 and we really just made the only option for women a dirty wire hanger in the back of someone's car? Did we all not watch Dirty Dancing?

5

@panshel I was saying to friends that they should've kept RBG in coma / made her a zombie / put her on life support / do whatever it takes to extend her life UNTIL election 2020 got sorted out.

@flatwhite The courts are going to be one of the biggest legacies of the Trump administration. The Supreme Court is no longer a check and balance on the other 2 branches of government.

3 conservative justices being shoved through aside, the Supreme Court has huge legitimacy issues with a sitting justice whose wife is an insurrectionist and a QAnon supporter.

5

@panshel yep, that’s what I’m sayin’ 😉

1

Slightly less percentage of US Supreme Court Justices died in office than percentage retired. I don't know if any died "young". Seems like there must be some psychological factors that cause justices to not want to enjoy a golden retirement. Wonder whether it's a power trip thing. Otherwise, plenty of institutions would welcome the retirees aboard if they had intellectual needs to satisfy.

Also, seems like Justice Breyer knew Roe v. Wade would be overturned when he announced his retirement. Might be a main factor that spurred his decision.

1

it's more than worrying. it is the PROBLEM...

A comment about men parading their bare chests at least one scene per dram set me to thinking. Weightlifting Fairy (2016) had our leading man bare from the waist up, well he was a swimmer. Plenty of bare chest and abs in Bride of Habaek (2017).
Too much “Me Tarzan, you Jane, look at my muscles” and it becomes commonplace and starts losing its appeal.
…One thing I noticed when first watching Kdramas was the lack at bare skin and body parts which was refreshing. So much better than the American type shows where nakedness of anything is plastered everywhere I liked the fact that Kdrama still had an innocence about them. You didn’t have your leading men and ladies slobbering all over each other and Russian hands and Roman fingers!

..But it does seem that nearly almost every Kdrama now HAS to show at least a couple of shots with the hero puffing out his chest baring all.
Even in Crash Landing we are yet again shown bare chest more than once, the second lead this time.
Kim Woo Bin in Uncontrollably Fond did it, (he at least had a good physique, abs and well defined muscles!).
Rowoon in The King’s Affection, looking good too. In “My Country: The New Age” we were given a double whammy of not one, but two delightful young men baring the upper bodies - Yang Se-Jong and Woo Do-hwan. Don’t get me wrong - eye candy is the stuff that dreams are made of, but too much and it becomes shameless, it means nothing.
..I shall now get off my soap box.

I think though back in the day the men looked more like (fit, attractive) regular people and now they are way more ripped even when the role doesn’t actually call for it. The same thing has happened in western shows but happened a few years earlier I think. I guess it makes shower scenes more “here, admire this actor’s physique” and less “you will now creepily spy on this regular man in the shower” ? 👀

Me too. I read many (10-15) years ago that what we now call fan service is related to Confucian ideals of caring for your body as part of your filial duty (the body that your parents gave to you) and showing it is a sign of showing your good health, also looked upon as a good thing.

Now, why this applied only to men I don’t recall. It didn’t mention women at all! 🤔 Surely it has nothing to do with Confucianism being a patriarchal system and womens’ bodies being only for the male gaze? 🤨

I think it really got going with Rain always stripping his shirt off during his concerts! They even started his early drama Full House with a scene of him getting out of bed with very little on!

2

I have noticed the older drama scenes too and you are right it was normal bodies. I just think we should let the shower scenes go. We all know people get washed, go to the toilet, be sick and recycle but unless it’s taking the story somewhere let’s not see it on screen. I know there is a recycling drive in South Korea so if they do PPL for products then they should do it with something as serious as environmental issues. But when I am noticing the toilet and shower scenes that means they are not blending into the story. I literally feel they are a tick box like the Be melodramatic massage chair it gets randomly added for the sake of it. Just like we used to see half naked women in western films but not men it’s just the other way round on K dramas. I am even getting sick of prolonged kiss scenes now.

The toilet scenes I notice because toilet humor seems to be a big thing culturally that it just isn’t here, so what might land as funny to a local audience is just uncomfortable to me.

I don’t know which Kdramas you are watching, I haven’t noticed any prolonged kiss scenes. They’re quite chaste really, with the exception of maybe “What's Wrong with Secretary Kim?”

I am referring to the how you know you are watching a K drama twenty camera angled zoom in plus 360 degree circle round the actors kisses in most rom coms.

Not going to lie, I enjoy fan service. But, yes, it's cringy to tack on some shower or gym scene in every drama just to put up an actor's body for our enjoyment, and they should end it. And I agree with your point of view that too much of a good thing makes it meh. Especially if preparing these stupid scenes sends actors on a dieting/mad workout bend. Most actors look amazing as it is and put in a lot of effort to be fit - it's part of they work! - but these scenes add unecessary stress. Just let them eat ice cream and focus on the script!

‘Not going to lie, I enjoy fan service’ made me smile as I could just see naughty cell in the corner smiling🤣🤣🤣

I worry for their physical and mental health as looks fade. They have such a small window to earn their money and then what life do they lead? There are only so many Dear my friends and On the verge of insanity kinds of dramas where they get top billing the rest of the time it’s a couple of scenes as someone’s parent or grandparent. The fact that we can recognise the actors in that older age range shows that the work is thinning out and the competition is fierce so only the well known get the parts.

I love to see gorgeous actors too but I want them to have a life and enjoy their youth too. Birthcare centre showed the impact of a female actress hiding because she put on a lot of weight when she was pregnant and was ashamed to be seen by the other women let alone the general public from paparazzi photos.

I’m definitely not complaining about the fan service but also basically agree on all points here!

I had to look up “fan service” to see what it was, not having heard it before - I have learned something new. There was a shower/ pool scene in Cinderella and The Four Knights, Park So-dam gets out of the water, goes to the shower? room and up comes that handsome devil Jung Il-woo in his togs standing close, very close, no kiss but you could feel the sexual tension. See - if that had been an American show it would have been portrayed differently. I only hope South Korea doesn’t follow suit.

Personally, I always saw that as a compensation for the actresses who have to wear short dress, skirt, short with very high heels in every season. They suffer during the whole drama, the actor during one scene :p

After, it depends but usually it's mainly the shoulders, the back and a little of pecs.

I hear you the women do wear ridiculous clothes, so many wearing short shorts these days to work like they are on holiday and the heels…

The end of ep 6 of Yumi’s cells and that ominous foreshadowing. It came far too quickly. I am depressed already because to paraphrase Michelle Yeoh’s wonderful recent film, everything sucks everywhere all the time. Sigh.

Does anyone have an idea when shows like Bloody Heart and Kiss Sixth Sense will be shown on the US Disney+ subscription? Is there another way to watch them.

This is about a series. I watched this really good series ages ago about a boy who could remember everything that happened in his life. His father was wrongfully found guilty of murder. Later, the grown up son defends his father at retrial, he’s starting to lose his memory.
……Do you know I couldn’t remember the name or who was in it, came across it by accident the other day and am rewatching it. It is Remember: War of The Son with Yoo Seung-Ho, Park Min-young, Namkoong Min and Park Sung-woong of Man To Man.
…..As much as I like Namkoong Min, he that is his character is horrible, he has no redeeming features, whereas he was such a lovely killer in The Girl Who Sees Scents!
……Although I remember the basic storyline, it is good to rewatch because second time around I find I am more appreciative? you get deeper involved with each character’s storyline. I had forgotten how sad it is seeing Seo Jin-woo losing his memories. Am two thirds of the way through Episode 18 and I’ve been sitting bawling my eyes out. Aw, why couldn’t poor Jin-woo have been given a happier life - Alzheimers at age 22? Kdrama land you are evil, I tell you - pure evil!

‘ he was such a lovely killer in The Girl Who Sees Scents!’ only in K drama land will they develop a character in such a way that you would write that phrase and mean it!

I would love to watch the drama Remember: war of the son based on your description it sounds so interesting but it will be too heavy for me. It’s good when we get to find the drama we enjoyed and want to watch again I have one I can’t find anywhere because the tropes I remember too common and with no name and only vaguely remembered plot it’s hopeless but you have given me hope that it can be located. I will put in a proper request to name that drama one day.

Thank you Reply1988, I watched Remember:War of The Son on YouTube as it is no longer on Netflix (Australia). Some Kdramas I love the best aren’t on Netflix now so YouTube is the only option here. Re not remembering the title, I sometimes have success by entering certain things about the show I’m searching for. Good luck with it, it can be an annoyance.
