First love turned crazy tenant in KBS rom-com The Law Cafe

KBS’s upcoming drama The Law Cafe is looking an awful lot like a quintessential K-drama rom-com — and you’ll hear no complains from me. The newest teaser opens with our two leads Lee Seung-gi (Mouse) and Lee Se-young (The Red Sleeve Cuff) as flirty high schoolers. Because is there a friends-to-lovers romance out there that would feel complete without our leads having a history?

Through the high school flashback it looks like our hero Kim Jung-ho (Lee Seung-gi) and heroine Kim Yuri (Lee Se-young) dated in their youth. We see them being cute together and hear Yuri mocking his haircut. From there we move into the present day, with the eponymous law cafe being created. And God bless dramaland: it’s a pitch-perfect K-drama set if ever I saw one. Inside we hear Yuri saying “law” in English and explaining her intentions to start a law cafe, as we see some drip coffee being made and Jung-ho flipping out over her plans… since he’s the landlord.

The next text screen positions Yuri as “his first love masquerading as a tenant,” and we see quick cuts of Yuri promising to live peacefully, but then doing anything but and creating much mayhem. In contrast, Jung-ho is noted as “the jobless tracksuit-wearing landlord” who defends himself and his fashion choices calling it “vintage, casual, ethnic high fashion” — and really, who can argue, since you can take the tracksuit out of dramaland but you can’t take dramaland out of the tracksuit.

From there the romantic hijinks start — accidental close proximity moments, secret staring, etc. — and Yuri asks if he’s being like this because they dated in the past. Jung-ho then says he’s only acting like this because “Yuri is a psycho,” and we see more cuts of her being the wild woman she seems to be. Sign me up, folks!

Directed by PD Lee Eun-jin (Happy to Die, Chief Kim) with scripts by Im Eui-jung (One Night), The Law Cafe premieres September 5 in the Monday-Tuesday slot.

Is that a cat? I am very, very tired of lawyer shows, but I am 100% up for cats.

Me, too. I once studied law and unfortunately didn’t think it was a very fun field. I am still a lil mad at Ally McBeal for making a lawyer job looked fun and affected my decision about which field to pursue when I was young. 🥲

Lol. I am currently a lawyer. I keep thinking I should have sucked it up and just become a nurse. Less school and loans, but alas.😭😏

Doesn’t it? It looks (mostly) glamorous but I found it draining. Some like it though.

I don't recommend law school, awful experience, but some of my favorite people I met in law school.

As an aside, two cats and a cat-stuff-filled apartment in Today’s Webtoon! But we don’t get to see them much and honestly they may be the best thing about the show 😬

I like their cat walks. I don’t do pets but even I think what an excellent way to keep natural instincts activated.

I'm tired of legal shows too, but I really like both Lee Seung-gi and Lee Se-young. I hope there is something interesting here.

Unlike others, I love a good law show. So I am excited for this. Plus, I love the leads, plus LSG has a habit of picking really over the top shows, which even if they are bad, I still enjoy.

It doesn’t show for me if I search for The Law Cafe but it comes up if I look up Lee Seung Gi and look on the ‘Works’ tab. It says it’s unlicensed for my region though at this stage.
