Jealousy heats up in new Love in Contract teaser

tvN’s upcoming rom-com Love in Contract is basically drowning us in promos at this point. The hype is sky-high, but there also comes a point where one has seen enough clips from the drama’s key moments and would rather not be spoiled and just watch the drama. Or is that just me? (It’s the reason why I much prefer high-concept teasers instead of these footage trailers).

Anyway, Love in Contract stars Park Min-young (Forecasting Love and Weather) as wife-for-hire Choi Sang-eun. Quick cuts in the new teaser show us how she’s not stopped by tradition, culture, or anything — the woman seems like a chameleon that can blend in anywhere. That’s a gift for sure, but also, I’m somehow not sorry all the fakery starts to bite her in the behind?

Sang-eun has a long-time client in Jung Ji-ho — played by Go Kyung-pyo (Private Lives) — who is her Mon-Wed-Fri husband. All seems to be going peachy until a new client turns up: superstar Kang Hae-jin, who is played by Kim Jae-young (Reflection of You). Let the love triangle begin! *waves cape*

The new teaser sheds some light on not only Ji-ho’s mysterious persona, but the fact that Kang Hae-jin has first love baggage going on. Okay, which hero has known her from childhood and/or shares forgotten history with her? (Only half joking.)

As the teaser progresses, we see Ji-ho ask Sang-eun if she’s afraid of him, and you could cut the tension between them with a knife as they stand in his kitchen. Later, we see Ji-ho jealous of Sang-eun and Hae-jin, and he interrupts them with, “Honey, I’m hungry.”

Written by Ha Gu-da, and directed by PD Nam Sung-woo (My Roommate Is a Gumiho, Old School Intern), tvN’s Love in Contract premieres September 21.

Everyone looks so washed-out and artificial in these stills and the trailer. PMY's hair is weird. I'm still waiting for the reveal that it's a vampire drama.

I'll probably tune in, though, just to see if there's more spark than the art director is showing us so far.

@elinor: I love the way you think. That would be funny even if I dare say that we are ALL scarred by bloody Twilight. And, I still cannot buy a character who is a top Hallyu star and enters into such an arrangement. Maybe they don’t have the Interwebz in this world and Tabloid reporters only report on corrupt politicians and other officials?

@dncingemma: Maybe this world is good after all. I’ll accept any number of fake marriage contracts among celebrities if what I get in return is fair journalism and freedom of press.

@ladynightshade: It would be a a much better ‘world’ indeed. I will try and suspend my incredulity. Let’s hope it is at least fun and doesn’t have offensive bits.

Okay. Here is my theory. The guy doesn't date and he isn't interested in relationships. He is already hitting thirty and there are a lot of gossips about him being gay. Because that hurts his career more than a relationship would, he is hiring someone to play his lover.

@nerdy: And, he is a vampire!😂This is @elinor’s doing as I can’t get this out of my head now.

🧛🏻‍♀️ 😈 The confidentiality clause that I assume is part of the fake-wife contract would certainly come in handy there.

@nerdy, I like your theory and it makes more sense than anything I could come up with. Not that ANY of this makes sense.

If your theory is right, I hope it doesn’t do the homophobic adjacent and hence still gross in my book routine.

@dncingemma: Oh, I really, really hope they don’t go with a comedic approach to this topic (providing this is the explanation on the show). It’s beyond tiring to constantly see queerness as a punching bag or “hilarious” (🙄) running gag in dramas. I know that since this is a drama and Kim Jae-young is the SML, he will be straight. But I cannot imagine how horrifying this would be for an actual closeted gay/bisexual/queer actor in South Korea. Entering a lavender marriage would be the least someone this successful would do.

4

@ladynightshade: Given how manifestly hard it is to have a mainstream career and be an out LGBTIQ person in SK, “straight-acting” must be the survival MO.

3

@dncingemma: It’s just barely stopped being the survival MO for LGBTQ+ public figures in the “progressive” Western world. Yet still there are forced outings and being told to “tone it down” or be forever pigeonholed as the “gay one”.

4

@nerdy: This is actually a very plausible explanation and would certainly make sense (in heightened, dramaland logic) as to why a figure in the notoriously relationship-averse Hallyu industry would need such a public partner. Heteronormativity, no matter how bizarre or controversial, is still far more acceptable than allegations of queerness, which would be the ultimate nail to the coffin for a celebrity in such a conservative culture. Love it!

Also might actually provide some necessary substance/commentary from what otherwise seems to be a pretty flimsy show.

I don't mind Kim Jae-young's hair - at least we can see his forehead. It's his eyebrow color, waxy makeup, and especially the mauve lips that bother me.

Go Kyung-pyo needs a makeover even more. Right now everything about him screams constipation and pissiness. I'm not sure whether to hope for extended three-sided misunderstandings or for PMY to just dump Mr. Grump and run away with the fun guy.

@elinor I lol’d at the gassy and bloated comment. He should unbutton a few more of his buttons don’t you think? Gah he was as someone mentioned below very hot in Jealously but I just hope his role here let’s loose and surprise.

Kim Jae young looked way better in Reflection and other dramas. The bright makeup and filters washes him out, he looks like an elf lol. That said, yay on the casting director choosing all three solid similar aged actors to be leads here!! Knowing he started out as an actor and working his way up instead is another positive!

@elinor: My memories of GKP are frozen in - the “Reply 1988” - time. He was such a genuine sweetie there. Constant dourness, be gone!

@nalishebo, @bbstl, @elinor: I wonder how these overly done up practices started up? If Harry Styles can be the academic subject of a US college course, surely some enterprising college professor can research and teach a course on this? I even have a title: The aesthetics of male representation: The Hallyu semantics.

Just curious if she is a professional bride, does this mean we get a montage of previous "husbands"?

I just re-watched Private Lives this weekend... and I still can't buy into the babyfaced badass... it doesn't work for me. But in this one, "are you afraid of me?" seems just as funny. The shots of the other customers, er, husbands are interesting... I wonder how much of those stories we'll actually get, though; I'm guessing they'll just float by behind a monologue voiceover from PMY.

This storyline boggles the mind. How would it be possible for her not to be caught by the guy's family and friends, and even strangers or journalist. Is Seoul so large that her husbands run in totally different circles considering both are supposedly prominent in their own fields?

Oh my, we shared the same concern! I was tempting to have it in my watchlist, but I'm afraid that I will need to throw away my brain outside the window if I'm going to watch this show 😅. So many complexity will arise from this storyplot and I do not wish to hurt my brain that much 🤭🙈

I'm kind of expecting this... some journalist/paparazzi or somebody's assistant/secretary/dongsaeng sees her with a different guy/husband and some elaborate ruse has to be created to explain it and keep it from blowing up the enterprise.

When in doubt, I know Park Min Young will always kill it in the fashion department. She knows how to wear tailored pieces that fit her frame well.

This teaser got my interest piqued. I think the story is a fresh take on a romance genre, and I already sense some steaminess esp. from GKP/PMY’s side. As for the love triangle, ooh I know that’s going to cause a possible fan war :D. Not sure if I’m prepared for that, and I may say I’m a tad biased since GKP is my fave.

The show looks glossy but bright. Yeah a bit brighter than it should be, but I don’t mind it. I think tvN has shown it has and can do mature sexy romances. I just hope the love triangle is fun here, and doesn’t overtake the story and FL’s arc and the other characters individual arcs separate from romance!!
