Jeon Do-yeon makes headlines in Crash Course in Romance

A new poster has dropped for tvN’s upcoming Crash Course in Romance, splashing our famed leads Jeon Do-yeon (Human Disqualification) and Jung Kyung-ho (Hospital Playlist 2) on the front page and center.

Once a national athlete for women’s handball in South Korea, Nam Haeng-sun (Jeon Do-yeon) is now the owner of a banchan (side dish) shop and is just dipping her toes into the competitive world of private education.

Although we haven’t yet been told the how or why, this leads Haeng-sun to meet the immensely popular math instructor Choi Chi-yeol (Jung Kyung-ho) and cue the sparks of love. I expect we’ll get some bickering and hijinks as well, to which I say, the more the merrier!

The poster’s tagline promises a bittersweet romance scandal while hitting the nail on a classic rom-com trope – describing our heroine as the one math problem that our hero cannot solve.

With the pairing of Jeon Do-yeon and Jung Kyung-ho, there was no way I wouldn’t be tuning in. But the rom-com also boasts a talented supporting cast which includes, among many others, Shin Jae-ha (My Unfamiliar Family) as Chi-yeol’s devoted right hand man and Roh Yoon-seo (Our Blues) as Haeng-sun’s daughter.

We also have Lee Bong-ryun (Narco-Saints) as Haeng-sun’s athlete bestie, while Jang Young-nam (Cheer Up), Kim Sun-young (Stock Struck), and Hwang Bora (Kiss Sixth Sense) could become friends or foes as fellow moms who are each looking out for their kids’ future.

Directed by PD Yoo Je-won (Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha) with scripts by Yang Hee-seung (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju), Crash Course in Romance has confirmed a January 14 premiere, broadcasting in tvN’s weekend slot.

This description (and the stars) is completely up my street ❤️ And I pre-nominate “banchan maker” for the 2023 Beanie Awards Best Occupation.

@bbstl: Yes!
Heretical but I prefer Thai food to Korean so my experience is somewhat limited but a lot of KD food appears to be banchan based. Probably easier from a production angle, right?

@dncingemma Are you saying small plates fit a small screen best? But in my opinion banchan allow all sorts of chopstick interactions, that I found are the essence of romance. I wish I had learned how to use them--it probably would have meant for a happier married life than my usual technique of shoveling food in with my fingers.

@hacja: I like your take on food based flirting using chopsticks. I hadn’t thought of that!
And, it is never too late. Just get a pair of training chopsticks and you are set!:)

@dncingemma Training chopsticks, hmm. Do they have 3-4 tines on the end of them that you can use to spear and scoop up food with?

@hacja I believe you have just come up with the next million dollar idea! 😮

I think this works best when both parties know the cultural nuances of good chopstick work. When my partner and I eat meals with lots of banchan, sometimes I will put a piece of meat on his bowl of rice, obviously in a loving and appreciative way, and I think it's almost entirely lost on him. Even when I have explained, he understands intellectually, but feels nothing about the gesture. Oh well.

@jls943: You are lovely and he is lucky to have you.

Hahaha, thank you @dncingemma! He shows me he loves and appreciates me in other ways, not to worry.

I had that sort of thing done to me in childhood by both Korean and Japanese relatives and it always felt to me like a boundary violation. You just don't put food on someone else's plate, with your own saliva-covered utensil to boot, without their permission.

@bbstl Since the spork has already been invented, I think we've reached the culmination of eating utensils.
However, if I could follow my usual practice of writing way off topic, I did want to say that the small plates, eaten with chopsticks style does promote a certain culture of eating that might reflect romantic styles as well, and I hope this show might get into food, actually, although it doesn't sound like it will. It sounds like its going to focus on the education aspect. And believe me, as an educator who loves food, cooking is 10 times more romantic than education!

The heart melting gesture of @jls943 -- your partner may deny that he is aware of what you are doing, but I am sure its like the chaebol pretending not to notice the beautiful and charming actress who is the female lead--would not be possible for me in my house, because my wife would have already eaten the piece of meat even before I sat down and looked around for more. But that's exactly why we are so compatible--the first meal I cooked for her involved a huge prime rib and a big tub of garlic mashed potatoes. My only misfire was the pie and ice cream for dessert--turns out she doesn't like blueberry pie--but by that time she was too full to walk out on me. So I successfully followed the overstuffing theory of food romance, and have ever since!

I’ve always thought, wow what a lot of work to have all those side dishes. Like, it’s a big deal when K Moms visit in dramas and say “I brought you side dishes”. At least with some nutritious side dishes, the kids are supplementing the ramen they’d otherwise eat by itself 😂
I wonder if banchan stores are common, because who has the time to make all these choices? I’d think they’d be very popular.
The more I think about it, the more intriguing this subject becomes for me!

I think banchan stores must be pretty common. I think Memorials had a scene where the ML compliments the FL's mom's food only to find out she bought it from a banchan place 😂.

@sharon: You’re right too. Not hygienic and can be intrusive but maybe not as bad with unused chapsticks at the beginning of a meal?

I think the leads' path cross during female protagonist's scramble to sign up her daughter to after-school math classes. The drama's blurb describes Na Haeng-sun (Jeon Do-yeon) as a "former national athlete who belatedly enters the hell of college entrance examinations". So it implies she has not prepared her daughter for the Korean SATS which is notorious for its difficulty that teenagers literally prepare their whole adolescence for the exams, particularly the math subject.
