News bites: December 10, 2022

  • ENA’s upcoming Can We Be Strangers released stills from their first script reading featuring Kang So-ra (Revolutionary Love) and Jang Seung-jo (Good Detective 2) — our story’s ex-married couple who have now become co-workers. Also starring Jo Eun-ji (Human Disqualification) and Lee Jae-won (Dr. Brain), the rom-com will be premiering this January with scripts by Park Sa-rang and PD Kim Yang-hee (Our Blues) at the helm. [MBC]

  • Another drama that is well underway for ENA is Paper Moon and reports confirmed that Bora (The One and Only) was added to the cast – in addition to the news that filming recently wrapped. Based on a well known Japanese novel – that has since been made into both a movie and drama in Japan – the Korean adaptation stars Kim Seo-hyung (Mine) with production led by writer Noh Yoon-su and filmmaker Km Seung-woo. • Over on tvN, the first poster is out for Crash Course in Romance (a.k.a. One Hit Scandal), with our heroine Jeon Do-yeon (Human Disqualification) coming face to face with poster ads of Jung Kyung-ho (Hospital Playlist 2). Releasing next month in January 2023, the rom-com is written by Yang Hee-seung (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju) with directing by PD Yoo Je-won (Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha). [YTN]
  • A new poster has come out for TVING’s Island as well, showcasing our powerful leads Kim Nam-gil (Through the Darkness), Lee Da-hee (Love is for Suckers), and Cha Eun-woo (True Beauty). Launching later this month on December 30, the action-fantasy has scripts penned by Oh Bo-hyun and filmmaker Bae Jong (Welcome to Dongmakgol) as the talent behind the camera. [Sports Donga]

  • Speaking of Kim Nam-gil, SBS announced that their action-comedy Fiery Priest could potentially return in a second season, but it has not yet been confirmed. The team is currently in discussions about casting and possible production schedules. The original season aired in 2019 and co-starred Kim Sung-kyun (Weak Hero Class 1) and Honey Lee (One the Woman). [Osen]
  • A new teaser has dropped for KBS’s Brain Cooperation, showcasing our foursome of different brains: Jung Yong-hwa (Sell Your Haunted House), Cha Tae-hyun (Police University), Kwak Sun-young (Behind Every Star), and Yeh Ji-won (So Do Sol Sol La La Sol). Starting off a fresh new year of dramas, the comedy premieres on January 2. [News]

  • In addition to laughs, this winter brings some melancholy as well with JTBC’s The Interest of Love (previously Understanding of Love). The latest promos include a new poster and video teaser, deconstructing the main love square between Yoo Yeon-seok (Narco-Saints), Moon Ga-young (Link: Eat, Love, Kill), Geum Sae-rok (Youth of May), and Jung Ga-ram (Love Alarm 2). The romance premieres in less than two weeks on December 21. [News1]
  • Also coming to our screens soon is tvN’s Missing: The Other Side 2, which has been pushing out its last round of promos with new posters and a third teaser this week. With Go Soo (Money Game), Heo Jun-ho (Why Her), Ahn So-hee (Thirty-Nine), and Ha Joon (Bad Prosecutor) reprising their roles alongside newcomers Lee Jung-eun (Yonder) and Kim Dong-hwi (Forest of Secrets 2), Season 2’s new mystery starts December 19. Can We Be Strangers, Paper Moon, Crash Course in Romance and The Interest of Love, are all potential watches. Name changes, posters and teasers are all to be forensically examined in the 2022-2023 watch for the bean count, as this is the year of discernment. Drama viewing is all about enjoyment and life is short. No more begrudgingly earned beans if I have to stretch my limited beans it will have more meaning for the shows they are allocated to.

For some reason that new Crash Course in Romance poster give me Notting Hill vibes. Hopefully that is a good sign to come.

1. We won't be strangers as I'll be watching you come January.

3. Finally, a poster of One Hit Scandal😊. This new title isn't it at all. I'm sticking with the old one.

4. I like what I'm seeing in that Island poster.

5. A possible comeback of Fiery Priest's trio. No qualms, bring it in.

7. Let's see what happens here.

8. Finally.🤭.
That's aside, what kinda poster is that😳😅. I had to look twice.

1. Drama gods, please please please let this finally be the romcom I need to make me fall back in love with kdrama romances. The actors are both great and I enjoy a good second chance story.

2. Kim Seo-hyung. That’s all my gay self needs.

3. Definitely preferred the original title, this one sounds too close to Crash Landing on You. The poster is giving Notting Hill vibes. Very excited for this as well.

4. Still miffed that they won’t let my love Lee Da-hee hold a sword (she’s so hot, why don’t you want the extremely starved and fanatically supportive sapphic audience, TVING/Amazon??), but I’m holding out hope for it in the actual show.

5. I promised to myself after Through the Darkness that I’d check out Fiery Priest for Kim Nam-gil. This must be the universe sending me a sign to get on with it.

6. Continuing my theme of being extremely gay, the women involved bring me much joy. The men… eh.

7. You know, it’s very, very difficult (I’d argue impossible) to make Moon Ga-young look not beautiful. And they definitely didn’t succeed here either - she’s breathtaking. That said, I despise those bangs with the burning passion of an exploding supernova.

8. Probably because I didn’t watch the first season, but what the hell is going on in that poster?

Re your question for drama number 8, I have the impression that the different pictures represent the connections between the different characters some of whom are alive and some are missing presumed dead. My assumption could be completely wrong of course as I only read the first line of scary/tension inducing summary material and move on so I may have missed something from the original write up.

for point 4, according to the comics Lee Da Hee is not a physical fighter. I won't spoil it too much but that's why only the dudes have swords for now. don't worry, if the drama follows the comics she will have a pretty interesting storyline.

for point 5, if you want to check out more KNG I also recommend live up to your name! it's slightly shorter than fiery priest and (in my opinion) a better written story. TFP is still good though, of course. when it comes to comedy KNG can do no wrong.

Thanks on the info on Lee Da-hee’s character. Ngl, a part of me is still sad we won’t see her be a sword-wielding badass, but I won’t have more complaints if she’s actually well-written.

Live Up To Your Name is one of my favourites! Kim Nam-gil and Kim Ah-joong are one of my top kdrama OTPs.

Being a Kim Nam Gil fan myself, Island and Fiery Priest 2 (if it is confirmed) are my most awaited dramas. But I'll have to watch Fiery Priest 1 sooner than later (it has been for a long time in my Plan to watch list).

The interest of Love seems so melancholic in the teasers... But I think it can be good.

CRASH COURSE IN ROMANCE sounds fun and so does CAN WE BE STRANGERS? We will be watching both of them.

ISLAND is a strong maybe for me. Same for INTEREST OF LOVE.

Season 2 of Fiery Priest? If the original cast could come back I will lead the cheering team! It's one of my few re-watches. most of these went on my to look forward to list. Sounds like a better year next year than this was for dramas.
