There were four stories this week that show the current problems of Korean entertainment industry:

Actress Go Joon-hee, best known for her roles in “She Was Pretty” (2015) and “The Slave Hunters” (2010), signed an exclusive contract with her new agency .  In the past three years, her last agency could not get her any drama or commercial work because she was rumored to be part of Burning Sun scandal. The scandal took an immediate toll on her life. Go was told that her contract to appear in the upcoming KBS drama series “Perfume” had been canceled, and various overseas scheduled events were canceled one after another. She spent years trying to combat the false rumors. It was a burdensome process. With legal assistance, the actor is still in the process of wrapping up 32 lawsuits that she filed against commenters who spread rumors or verbally abused her with sexually insulting comments She said this week she wants to return to acting but she is also handicapped in casting for roles because she is tall (5’8”). Again, this is another example of internet rumors derailing a Korean actor’s career.

And from what I understand even when the truth does come out, netizens don't even quickly change their tune and accept they were wrong. I saw some guy was accused of cheating, it was revealed to be a lie yet there are still people call him a cheater and say he shouldn't be allowed to do whatever.

Son Ji Hyo moved to a new agency in October, 2022. She is still an active model-actress-variety star. However, she recently sued to terminate her contract since the agency never paid her. Worse, the agency allegedly never paid its employees. According to Dispatch, many have not been paid since February, running up huge personal debt and defaulting on insurance payments. The agency required its managers to use their own credit cards to pay company expenses then seek reimbursement. The managers state they were not reimbursed. SJH is owed $672,000 US and promises of settlement have never materialized. Thankfully, her pay from Running Man was paid directly to her from SBS.

Song Hye Kyo and Han So Hee were excited to co-star in a new drama, “The Price of Confession.” But on May 17, Korean media outlets reported that Song Hye Kyo, Han So Hee, and director Shim Na Yeon have decided to not continue working on the upcoming K-drama. The apparent reason was the production company was not properly communicating and managing the series in pre-production. This was a Studio Dragon show, but it stated that its co-producer, Studio H, was to handle the entire project. Digging deeper, Studio H is a subsidiary of SSL which claimed this week it wants to become the Korean Walt Disney. Its executive claimed that it had all the infrastructure and processes in place to make that happen. Someone at Studio H learned about Song and Han’s departure through a news story. Yikes. Apparently, there was no show runner or person in charge of this production at Studio H which is hard to believe for a major project like this one. However, Shim was the third director offered/signed on this series so maybe there were real issues from the start.

Last week, a 30 year old trot singer allegedly killed herself in her dorm room. Trot music exploded with several talent shows in mid 2010s. Many new artists got into the business. But unlike other singers, trot music income is dependent on live festival performances (usually sponsored by a local government.) It is not uncommon for a trot singer to have 5 to 8 different performance venues in a single day or 70-80 performances a month. The pandemic shut down that income stream. As the industry notes, the increase in popularity of trot did not increase the overall revenue pie. There are about 10,000 festivals with between 5 to 10 stage acts. Music budgets are small. After the pandemic, things got more competitive. A-list trot stars now command much higher fees ($18,000-$22,000 US per performance) but those who are unknown will earn less than $1,000 US/day). Most trot singers have to have side jobs just to pay bills. I had heard that trot singers lived a highly stressful and grueling career on the road since it is popular in rural countrysides and with seniors. It is an odd niche entertainment segment where fans do not buy artist songs or albums. There really needs to be more support for artists.

How do folks use the “My Shows” section of their profile? Do you put all the shows you’ve watched there? Just your favorites? If the latter, how do you decide which ones make the cut? Just curious about this section and looking to fill mine, but open to suggestions. Thanks!

It'd be great if dramas with a certain number of stars automatically get added. Hopefully a DB admin will consider that.

I add almost everything I've watched or am watching, usually after the first episode or two. If it's an early drop (Heavenly Idol, Kokdu), I hated it (HomeCha), or I am indifferent and will never think of it again (Secret Garden), I might take it back off the list.

I only put my favorite dramas, regardless of the grade I gave them. They are dramas that I'm fond of, enjoyed, bring me good memories, have great characters...
Pd: Queen Seon Deok should be in my Fan Wall too, but that drama doesn't have an entry to add it.

Can anyone tell me what they think of Cha Eun-woo's current acting? I read some criticism of him recently and I'm worried because he's going to be the ML (who comes across as cold at first) in the drama adaptation of A Good Day to be a Dog, my favorite webcomic ever! Can you assuage my fears?

Hum... I liked him in My ID is Gangnam Beauty and True Beauty for the beginning. But when his characters should have showed some changes, his acting didn't really change.

I didn't like Island as a drama and neither of the 3 main actors could change it even Kim Nam-Gil, so I'm not sure I can't judge him for this drama.

But he's really handsome so my eyes are happy :p

I agree. He is very pretty, but his facial acting is lacking IMO. It’s like his face barely moves. I want to see him in a role getting all angsty and his face is all crumpled up and distorted. But maybe he had already and I have just not seen it.

I think of Lee Min-ki. Who knew he was such an expressive actor before 'My Liberation Notes'? His other roles you can almost hear the director instructing him 'Keep it flat and expressionless' because the tacitun hero is all the rage these days.

I feel giddy that you mentioned it. To be honest, I thought of LMK too but I was embarrassed to insert him in the topic because I might arrive as flattering my own bias. Hee hee…

But truthfully, his micro expressions are one of his strongest suits. His eyes are so expressive you can see the shift in his emotions even without any dialogues.

3

Agree. It feels like an offshoot of his idol life - he's trained to always look perfect on camera and that doesn't translate well to acting. The best young actors are those who aren't afraid to look ugly onscreen like Lee Do-hyun for example.

7

Required fields are marked *

Yes! I admire actors who are not conscious of how they register in the screen. I liked Hye-ri in Reply 1988 for that.

8

I'd say he improved quite a bit lately - specifically in Island, there were even a few emotional scenes I was moved by - but his starting point was like really low, so moderate expectations would be the best choice.

Yeah, I don't get why he is considered one of the most handsome, cutest, face genius, etc

But then again I'm not typically attracted to visuals haha so I'm not a good judge.

I will say he *does* look manhwa characters and I think people are totally blinded by that when they watch him in stuff. It's like he's so pretty, who cares if he's not good at acting; throw all the roles and awards at him.

He was the low point of Rookie historian.

I'm the type that doesn't get bothered by actors and their skills, you know? I still don't understand why people dislike some actresses so much, tbh. But CEW almost ruined "Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryong" for me. 😞
I liked him in The Best Hit and ID tho. If the character from that webtoon is similar to those two, I think it'll be okay.

Required fields are marked *

He is quite flat. He is good looking, in a pretty sort of a way. That is probably one reason Hwang In-Youp became a rage in True Beauty. He was miles ahead of Cha Eun-Woo in acting department. When Cha-Eun-Woo's character comes back in True Beauty after the break, I am sure there were many who would not have minded if Joo-Kyung had opted to put an expiry date on him and gone with Seo-Jun. I started Rookie Hostorian and I didn't like him , he was so....flat and just plain unsuitable for the role (and I don't like the lead actress either) so dropped it. Maybe with the very recent tragedy he had to go through, his emotive range might have undergone a change. Actors do improve with time if they put in the effort (of course, they might never be how some are naturally gifted) but they get better.

Also, has anyone watched XO, Kitty on Netflix? I was going to watch it, but then I saw that the ending is a cliffhanger (ugh) and there are multiple love interests, rather than the two the trailer made it look like. Then I was like, if I want to watch a romance story with kdrama vibes, can't I just watch an actual kdrama?

A moment for Youtube edits! I’m currently watching Provoke, a Chinese web drama/short drama that I found thanks to a lovely video that popped up on my YT feed. It was really prettily edited by someone and so far the show is standing up to the hype of the edit - I’d recommend for anyone who’s wanting a period romance with a Peaky Blinders vibe: think retro Shanghai setting, revenge plot, well tailored suits, sizzling chemistry and noir film mood.

There’s actually so many great web dramas in particular that I found thanks to people that make edits of them on YT and Instagram. Like Hymn of Death, Splash Splash Love, Kiss Goblin, and Scripting Your Destiny (to name a few!) which are all fantastic K-web dramas that I wouldn’t have likely found on my own otherwise. I could go on a tangent here about the beauty of short web dramas too, so many of them are well written & executed and pack a lot into a rather short run time.

But anyways this recent find also got me thinking about how much I appreciate people that put in the time and effort to make these gorgeous edits. Whether it be highlighting the show overall, highlighting an OTP or platonic relationship, or highlighting a pairing that we all wished would get together during the course of the show, there’s SO many just gorgeously made edits out there. Even outside of dramas, there’s also so many hilarious K-pop edits or actor interview edits I’ve come across that make for great entertainment. I could never find the energy, the creativity or skill needed to put these edits together so I’m always in awe and am so very grateful for people who do make them! Sometimes the edits are pieces of art on their own and end up being better than the actual show too, or make for better MVs than the actual original MV for the songs that are used in the edit 😂

I wonder if it's possible to consider yourself a fan and support the entertainer's professional life but not their personal life. I've been thinking about that alot lately.

Like I genuinely can't stand seeing or knowing about their personal life even though I'll staunchly defend their right to have one. (I know I seem like a hypocrite but yeah)

I'm new to be a fan of someone and emotionally invested. That's why I can somewhat understand why others are emotionally affected by their fave in relationship or seeing proof of it. I have been told that my feelings/reactions does seem like someone who has a crush on someone unavailable but I genuinely never thought I liked him in a "I want him for myself/I want to date him" kinda way. I just want them to continue working and be successful and his personal life has affected that. Because of that or at least in part because of that, I really dislike seeing evidence of his relationship. Does that make me a bad fan? I want to support his career but I hate hearing/knowing about his personal life. I don't think it's necessarily black & white because my feelings are valid & I'm not doing anything malicious but I feel complicated and wanted to talk to someone about it.

I always struggle to understand why some people are put in the position of a super human.

If a pilot was seen with his girlfriend/wife off duty no one would care because as long as he focused on his job when he was working that is the only bit that matters and directly effects my life when I am on the plane. It’s the same with a dentist, plumber etc. As soon as it comes to fantasy world for jobs like a footballer, writer, actor or singer etc. the image associated with the job becomes something that must be upheld 24/7 like they cease to be human beings who have a right to down time like anyone else. No fan would want someone dictating their life outside of the hours they were paid to be at work. Why is a person in the prime of their years when they have money and look their best supposed to stay single as if they are a holy person? When are they supposed to enjoy the love of another person or have children? Would fans want to prove their love for their idols by staying single until their idol retires?

I think part of the problem is the manipulation of the marketing departments so fans are sold an image that is not real anyway. It’s been going on for decades and really took off with the Beatles, Elvis Presley etc when girls would get so hysterical they would scream throughout the shows, faint etc.

9

Required fields are marked *

The Beatles & Elvis had a certain image? I honestly never understood why they were as iconic as they were. I just know they were significant moments in history and they seemed to just tap into something in the cultural zeigiest for their period. Kinda reminds me of how Korean entertainment is having a particular moment globally. Is BTS like The Beatles?! Wow, it's weird to think of it that way haha

Regarding just focusing on people's ability to do their jobs without thinking or caring about their personal lives, I've actually had a similar conversation about politicians. Aside from their qualifications, their image & personal life are tightly entwined with their appeal.

3

What I'm gathering is that you are a fan of someone whose relationship is affecting their career and you don't want to hear about that because you think it has a detrimental effect on their career? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

But if that's the case, I think you need to wish well for this actor. Relationships are very different from careers, unfortunately in this industry they are so intertwined. But like every other person, actors probably want to just live a normal life with their career being a part of their lives not something consuming their life. You're not a bad fan but you can work on this thought process. Now or in the future that actor's agency will ptobably deal with the backlash but they may end up losing a person they were genuinely interested in and could become a lifetime partner. Or maybe they'll firmly stick with that person because they realize at the end of the day, it's their life to live. And also none of this should really bother the fans, they have their own lives to live. So hearing about their relationship should give you good feelings even if you wish this actor to only work well. The consequences of their dating are in the future. Whether it would affect their career or not in the long run is unknown yet.

True, in the long run, he may possibly get fans back or acquire new fans but ugh, that's such a long time away! Haha
In the present, he is being lied about and ignored. The things he says or does is twisted to look bad. It sucks to witness.

I don’t think it’s irrational to not want to see things that make the person you’re a fan of get criticised.

Tbh I think it’ll settle down in a while once people get used to the idea and find something new to get outraged about. The trouble is that the people who you see on the internet are always the extreme opinions because they care enough to comment and they want to make a big scene.

In my head I understand that the vocal folks may just be a "vocal minority" but it never actually feels that way. It often feels like they're representative of a larger group who share the same or similar thoughts but just don't care enough to write about it.

As I was writing that, I thought of American politics haha. I was thinking how people will complain online or like posts but they also don't care enough to contact local politicians or go to town halls and things like that.

I keep trying to reframe things in my head or think about the fact that he does still have fans even though it's significantly smaller but it's hard seeing the change in perception and treatment.

You're just worried about his future. But I'm guessing he made a choice knowing the consequences, and if that's okay with him, then I there's no problem right?

Yeah, one of the common things people who are critical of him (and who turned on him) says is "he brought this on himself", "he should have expected this". I don't know how people can prepare themselves for backlash or public criticism.

I'm nowhere near as resilient as others so it's hard for me to wrap my head around that sometimes. Like I could never deal with a bunch of (negative) attention and being bombarded with criticism.

Well, people are made of stronger stuff than I am.

This is one of those situations that can't be understand with logic, because the whole thing doesn't make sense in the first place.

So it isn't like he did something wrong and that's why he deserves the hate; it's more like you would expect that, as a celebrity, he knows the crazy people out there ready to throw stones at him, so if he probably made his choice after a lot of contemplation.

So what I'm saying is that he probably has a plan, so you shouldn't worry so much about it. Unless he's an idol from those groups with crazy fandoms, I think he's gonna be fine.

1

I'm not going to be giving you the support you need but I think what you just said makes you a bad fan. But it's nice to read your thought process on how you feel about that subject actually, I read comments and threads written by fans that have a massive crush on an idol on how they feel betrayed and how unsupportive they're in whatever relationship their fave idol is inand I'm like "what's happening?" I personally think it's dehumanising especially when it comes to their love affairs and private relationships. I don't think whatever idol or star would feel okay when a large number of his fan base disagree or are against him in a relationship,it might make him/her start regretting their career choice, all these things might seem little but it actually affects their mental and emotional health, fighting for their own choices and approval from fans can be mentally draining. So I think the involvement with an idols life whether it's their professional life or personal life should have limits because they're human too.

No, I don't follow any celebrities personal life (I make generalization: They tend, in my eyes, to be shallow), I don't even like drama in which the lead has 'celebrity' as profession. It always downs to the same route, the said celebrity makes scandals, pr moves and the rest (me: not interested).

I actually watched Shooting Stars because I was curious about the Korean Entertainment world and it actually made me feel sadder for the entertainers. The way every little thing is scrutinized or has to be run through the company. It's kinda surprising to me more people don't get rebellious and go against the status quo. But then again being a rebel can be scary and as been established, netizens can be a scarier unforgiving bunch.

I don't really care about their personnal life. I'm not attached to any actor/actress to feel jealousy or anything else if they dated.

I have seen clips of him in other projects such as he played a mentally challenged person and I think that is considered one of his better performances.

But hmm, it's a tricky one with him haha

I like actors that are talented and make me feel invested in their characters. I don’t care about their personal life unless they are involved with some serious criminal characters (e.g., bullying). Even if the person is ruled innocent, I will decide to not support him or her any longer if he and she has close relationship with those who are ruled guilty. But if they get married, breaks up with someone, or things of the sort, I don’t really care.

When I don’t support someone, it doesn’t mean I’ll go on post malicious comment about the person. To me, it’s just like the person vanished into thin air.

I think it’s better to not know too much about entertainer’s personal lives - it’s hard not to get dragged in when people start writing things about them on the internet (be they true, false or completely irrelevant). So I try to stay away from things that are exclusively about their personal lives and just watch their projects.

And not read the comments on anything when people have their knives out! Because even on articles about their shoes there will be someone saying “but because of [actual or perceived wrongdoing] they are the worst person ever and nothing they have ever done is good!”. I don’t know what it is about the internet that makes people so comfortable abusing people, and so forgetful that people are seldom wholly perfect/evil.

Oh, you are so right! I think it can be such a hinderance to accepting an actor as a certain character or having certain habits if you know about their personal life such as recently with Black Knight/Delivery Knight. Knowing that the actor had nose/throat cancer made it so weird for me when his character was smoking (it was later revealed that the smoking was done using CGI) but during the show, I just wondered why he had to have this habit (especially when one of the characteristics of the world is air pollution but I digress). I also had a moment like that when I recognized the lead actor from Kokdu as someone who was caught up in a thing in the past.

The internet allows for anonymity but yeah, it's also weird how people just diminish people to their "worst" and that becomes their entire identity which makes them open for ALL the criticism and hate.

There was a show, I don't remember the title, but in the show, a girl transferred to a new school. At the new school, some girl who had previously been a classmate of hers during middle school claimed the transfer student had bullied her and all the kids in the class started bullying the transfer student. It was somehow revealed that the classmate had lied; the transfer student hadn't bullied her but she was friends with the person who did it so she decided to get back at her instead. After the lie was revealed, the kids in the class turned on her and shifted the blame to the transfer student saying stuff like "why didn't you say she was lying? Why didn't you blah blah blah" and the transfer student said something like "what difference would it make? Not like anyone was interested in hearing my side when you all made your minds up about me and decided to treat me like this". She may have gave a last stinger about them being bullies but I don't remember.

My point was people will unite in hating someone as long as they feel they're justified. The target cease being an actual person and just becomes whatever issue the person/group has against them.

Oh, trust me, it's possible. And I think that's totally normal, like you're supposed to like them because of what they do, so why should we care about the rest?

Unless that person has done something unforgivable from my POV, I don't really care about what they're doing and with who.

You can be any kind of fan as you want to be, you just need to accept that there are so many different types of fans out there, however weird some of them are.

What I gathered from years of fangirling and un-fangirling, entertainers’ personal life matters a lot for public. Especially for idols where they have image of “single and available”. So maybe just try to filter what you read and don’t take it to serious because personal life will always considered juicy by the media.

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

Woohoo! I made it again!😄Just the other day I mused to myself how often I have gone out this year already, with every weekend until July fully booked. It seems like the Open Threads must pay the price. This feels very weird to me, because for years I was a devoted poster every week. Then again, OT was therapy before I started therapy, so less posting sometimes means better mental health. It also does not hurt to ignore the tempting laptop more often for entertainment out there.😅Now, if I could just stay up to date with episodes, DB posts and the Beanie gossip, that would be great.😊

For me is a little similar. I usually don't have a problem with comments since I remember where I read them. But when I have to find something in my fan wall I really suffer, especially because I'm really bad at remembering "WHEN" did I post something. 😂
With the beanies section I gave up a centuries ago. Trying to find something there is real torture. 😆

Thanks for the tips, sunbae. 😉

Fortunately I have like a pretty good both written record and also memory of when I watched things, because I write it all down, so that helps. Having 160 pages of fanwall however, does not help. 😂

Just last night I remember a comment from years ago. I wanted to see it so I googled using the keyword from the comment + dramabeans + username of the commenter. And there it appeared in the top results. Haha…

Oh goodness it's been ages since I posted but I've been lurking.

Watched a whole bunch of dramas over the last couple of months thanks to finally getting Viki, which I only did in order to watch My Blooming Keyboard. That show could have been 16 episodes instead of 20, and the second male lead should get his own spin-off!

I also saw Love Affairs in the Afternoon, Sunbae Don't Wear that Lipstick, The Glory, Crash Course in Romance, and am halfway through When the Weather is Fine. I watched Duty After School, and Weak Hero Class I which I found to be extremely watchable done. Revisited Train to Busan which was great as always even after so long.

Black Knight was a binge watch and I am just confused as all heck with the point of the story! Besides the no oxygen plot line making zero sense, what happens at the end???? The mutants plot line was intriguing but really otherwise it just felt blah. It also made me want to get extra moisturizing lotion because of all that sand and potential dry skin.

I also watched Semantic Error which was delightful! The soundtrack is just addictive, and I thought the general storyline was well done. This lead me to then watch Our Dating Sim (not as amazing, but not terrible by any means), and I am a quarter way through Where My Eyes Linger. I found this genre to be intriguing and quite daring from from a socio-cultural perspective.

Also 3 episodes into The Veil. Quite pleasing on the eye, and of course the storyline is pretty good too!

It's seems like you're having fun! That's nice. I hope you enjoyed Love Affairs in the Afternoon, that's one of my favorite shows!

Since you enjoyed Semantic Error and ODSim, I would recommend To My Star! ^^ And, if you don't care switching to j-dramas, My Love Mixed Up!

I just started To My Star last night. That was a good suggestion.

1.5 more episodes of Love Affairs to go. And 2 more of Love Mates (another BL drama) to go.

One thing that I have found interesting is the wide swath of BL dramas across Asian genres, and that there is a commentary to be made about how media and storytelling can cover the most natural and stigmatized of topics to reach an extremely wide audience.

I also started watching Full House and oh my goodness the fashions......

Glad you're enjoying To My Star and Love Affairs.
I like BLs because they're just like any other kdrama, but simpler. It's all about the feels.

I haven't watched Full House even though is a classic. Idk why, just not the right timing I guess.

Mr Sunshine.
Whenever Netflix posts the top 10 shows in Korea, Mr Sunshine is always there. It never drops off. Why is that?
Is it required viewing for all Korean high school students or something like that? I mean- it’s a good show and all, but is it really that rewatchable?

I have no idea, I didn't even like the show. 😂 I finished it for Kim Min Jung. I didn't even like the main couple, only the FL as an individual character.

I don't know about Netflix posts since I don't care for the service, but Mr. Sunshine is well-liked by a lot of Kdrama enthusiasts (I think there's even a recent DB thread with many Beanies heralding its Kdramatic virtues). The subject of Korean independence movements from numerous historical foreign invasions/threats thereof across many centuries, whether monarchical or imperial, is one that more than just high school students learn/care about. It's good in and of itself, but it and other Kdramas like it are the TV show equivalent of July 4th fireworks celebrating American independence.

Thank you. That’s a fantastic explanation. I learned more about Korean history from that show than anywhere else.

There's many more accurate sources, but I find it one of the more enjoyable shows.

Ohh, I didn't elaborate enough. I didn't mean that the show was a good source of information. What I meant to say is that the show made me curious enough about Korean history for me to look it up elsewhere. Korean history is generally ignored by history books in the USA other than the Korean American war. Most of us here in the USA don't have a clue of all the things that led up the formation of North and South Korea. If anything, that show led me to understand the underdog status of that nation as a whole.

I think there are many reasons. The writer, the PD and the actors are famous in the Kdramas world.

The story took place in an area that is pretty rare in Kdrama.

It was a beautiful drama, every character was really well developped not only the 2 main ones.

I wish I could see Jung Somin, Aun Eunjin, Kim Woobin, Woo Dohwan Lee Dohyun, Junho, Esom, Seo Inguk and Kim Taeri in a good drama together. Ehh, I can dream, can’t I? So much drivel is made every year. Just imagine how magnificent this powerhouse of acting could be?
