[Drama chat] Rookie check-in

There is nothing like going back in time to, say, 16ish months ago, when we all discussed our favorite up-and-comers at the time. Which rookie did we expect to sky-rocket, which hardworking actor deserved to finally catch their big break? It’s time to check in on those old favorites and see how they’re doing — and maybe add some new rookies to the Keep Your Eye On Me list.

At the top of my current rookie list you will find Lee Shi-woo. After watching him hold his own opposite Kim Seo-hyung in Paper Moon, I was excited to see him as Secretary Ha’s little brother in See You in My 19th Life. Arise, rookie!

How are your rookies from 2022 faring? Who are your new favorites that you’re rooting for?

Let the chatting begin!

Have you watched Our Blues because Roh Yoon-seo and Bae Hyun-sung play a high school couple in it?

I think their arc together with the two fathers is the best arc in Our Blues. All four actors are so great to bounce out the dynamics, making it a memorable piece on its own.

Seeing Bae In Hyuk in the link's cover photo filled my heart with pride and joy! I didn't know him at all back then, and have just now re-ff'ed through the whole of My Roommate for his scenes!
I also loved seeing and recognizing Jinyoung's and Lee Joon Young's names.

I kept WILLING the show to make the gumiho decide that he can't make the girl happy and just... vanish...
I mean, technically there wasn't a wedding so I can day-dream a whole fanfic where he vanishes and Bae In Hyuk comes back from the states for summer holidays and the rest will be history...

Last year, Roh Yoon-seo caught my eye in her debut(!) role as the pregnant teenager in Our Blues, and I knew she was going places. Fast forward to Crash Course in Romance and her Best Newcomer win at this year's Baeksangs, it's safe to say the world is her oyster -- especially if she keeps picking good scripts!

I am having a blast watching Unlock My Boss. Chae Jong Hyeop is new to me, but I am impressed. Dare I say (gasp!) that he looks just as good as Junho in a three piece suit? Maybe even better?

I also like the actor who played grand prince Seongnam in The Queen's Umbrella.

I saw my comment from last year about Lee Jae Wook. I am happy that my dream came true! I wanted to see him as long haired sword wielding tragic hero, and Alchemy of Souls almost fit the bill.

Are you up to ep.8 of Unlock My Boss yet? Personally, I loved the romance, and there's a sweet scene related to suit and tie between our OTP.

Moon Sang-min (2000) won Best New Actor at the Baeksang Arts Awards for Under the Queen's Umbrella. His character Grand Prince Seongnam was my favorite character from 2022, and he has visuals, charisma, super tall height, and a nice voice.

Lee Min-jae (2000) Beanies love him from Crash Course in Romance, and I can't suffer through Oh! Young-shim for him, but I discovered him in Cheer Up, where he was the best thing in the drama as Han Ji-hyun's hardworking little brother.

Kim Jae-won (2001) is my reason to watch King the Land because his character, flight attendant Lee Ro-woon, is the most heart-fluttering. He also played another heart-fluttering character in Our Blues as young Cha Seung-won. I'm excited to see him in Netflix's upcoming drama Hierarchy.

I agree with other Beanies about Kim Jae Won! His parts in Our Blues were my favourite of the whole drama and I loved the KBS special drama Nineteen Otters. I really liked the actress Shin Eun-Soo who acted in Summer Strike and Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol, her romances were cute.

I liked the trio of the young actors in Crash Course in Romance <b<Roh Yoon-Seo, Lee Chae-Min and Lee Min-Jae.

I miss Kim Hwan-Hee. She was really good in Here's My Plan. They were a cute couple with Kim Do-Hoon who was in The Law Café and Today's Webtoon.

Lee Min-Jae!
I first noticed him as the grumpy brother in Cheer-up. And then in CCIR. I can't wait for him to be in some awesome dramas in the future..

Noh Sang-hyun - I can't say he is really a rookie. Apparently he has done movies. But he is just awesome.. love everything about him and I like that he is not a young kid/boy, so he has that sexy aura about him.

I liked Han Ji-hyun in Cheer up.

Yoon Jong Bin - I first saw him in "Do Do Sol Sol..." and was so happy to see him again this year in "Duty After School"

Shin Eun Soo - Also from "Do Do Sol Sol...", not sure if we can call her a rookie, but looking forward to seeing her in "Sparkling Watermelon"

Yoo Seon Ho - I first saw him in "Under the Queen's Umbrella", it's super fun watching him in 2 Days 1 Night!

Moon Sang Min - didn't notice him in "My Name", but he certainly made an impact in "Under the Queen's Umbrella". Enjoyed seeing him in "Duty After School" as well.

Kim Hieora - can we even call her a rookie?? In any case, she left a very strong impression in "Extraordinary Atty. Woo" and it's so exciting seeing her in all the big shows this year!

Lee Yeon the Chameleon - She's amazing. Period.

Song Duk Ho - so sad about his military enlistment issue, he cut his own career short

Yoo Seonho was very cute and funny as a ghost in short web drama Great Shaman Ga Doo Shim. And really great as Ji Jinhee’s son in Undercover. His character there is on the spectrum and I thought he did very well.

Wait now I realize Ji Jinhee was also father to an on-the-spectrum son in Move to Heaven, to another young and rising actor, Tang Junsang!

Going for the kid actors first. Park Soyi from See you in my 19th life and I had forgotten that I had seen her as the cheeky niece in She would never know.
Ki Soyu first saw her in Unlock the boss but superb performance as one of the twins in The good bad mother.

Next generation are Chae Jong Hyeop who I first got to know as lead in Love all, play who was my favourite male lead character of 2022, but equally loved him in Unlock the boss. He has such a cute smile.
I also think Bae Hyunsung is one to watch from Gaus electronics, Dear M, Hospital playlist and is in Miracle Brothers.
Choi Hyunwook from 25,21, and Racket boys and Weak Hero class 1.

I have not seen many drama with newbie female actors but would definitely jump on the praise for Roh Yoonseo from Our Blues, Crash course in love.

@Reply1988 I can maybe guess how Bae Hyunsung caught your eye—he has not just a passing resemblance to Park Bogum! 😊

Have you seen your man Jungwoo in Salon de Nabi? That drama flew in to my top ten from nowhere because it had so many characters’ growth stories, a sweet romance and comedy. It was such a shame it wasn’t released in Korea due to one of the actors having a bullying scandal.

Hm, I’ll give it a try. The idea of full grown man Choi Daniel in a loveline with the very young FL whom I still think of as the high school girl in Moment at 18 gave me the icks, and my Park Jungwoo is listed as having only a supporting role (as always, sigh)—the second supporting at that—so I passed on this one. But I’ll take a look at the first episode at least. Thanks!

It’s an ensemble cast so your Jungwoo is very present! There is no Daniel and Moment at 18 female lead loveline she is his apprentice.

Kim Do-hoon from Today's Webtoon.
Kim Young-dae and Han Ji-hyun from Penthouse.
Noh Sang-hyun from Curtain Call and Behind the Star. I did notice Noh Sang-hyun by mistaken identity. I had assumed it was another actor Kim Young-min, who I also mistook for Hong Woo-jin, and they've both piqued my interest in different projects, behind the name. So when I finally pinpointed who Noh Sang-hyun was, it was another intro to a rookie on its own. Behind Every Star is actually crazier since he's paired with Kwak Sun-young. Noh Sang-hyun in glasses is ... ;)

The new faces I saw in Perfect Stranger. I'm quite impressed with Seo Ji-hye. I actually thought it was Adamas's Seo Ji-hye when I first learnt about her casting. I think I noticed Bum-ryung while reading Good Bad Mother's recaps.

Bae Hyun-sung in Gaus Electronics. I'm quite surprised to learn he's also in Our Blues and it didn't catch my attention at all.
And there's this Choi-guy who liked Bona's character in 25-21. I see that he's done some nice projects after that.

Generally, I'm not a fan of young new faces, emphasis on the young,...and sorry 🙈. But these ones kinda stand out. I'm definitely not going to watch a drama series for them. Definitely not happening, offense. But I'll gladly watch something they're starred in until they properly grow and become actors I'll solely watch for them. Actors that have branched into that category are Kim Young-dae and Noh Sang-hyun.

I seem to miss all the new blood from kdramaland lately, what a bummer. Anyways, I rarely get impressed much with actors still in fresh and green and more promise than actual skills phase, so this is hardly surprising. Maybe FL's kid selves (both girls) in 19th LIFE? They did leave a strong impression. Otherwise most shows I watched in last like two years were full of already very familiar faces - with a few notable exceptions neither of which can be called a rookie even with a huuuge stretch of imagination - so here's that, I'm taking the crown for the most useless report in this comment section. Fight me if you can do even worse^^

Park So-yi (19th life kid) might be young but definitely not a rookie. If child actor award still exists or do exists, she'd have snagged an award a long time ago. But frankly, the way she held her own beside Cha Chung-hwa, I was really impressed. She's really come a long way.

She was really impressive.

I guess it mostly depends on show's overall popularity? Like all that buzz about child actor of ML in RR and how great he was in the only episode he appeared... One needs a huge audience to get noticed for their efforts. Legendary child actors of the past all came from smash hit dramas, often multiple ones in a row. tvN doesn't have an annual award show, so only big ones left and competition there is VERY fierce... Don't think there's a separate child actor category tho, probably only rookie one, which you said she doesn't fit anymore. So unless she gets a prominent supporting role and outperforms all her competitors there...

I’d like add to the list the two residents from Dr Kim S3:

Lee Shin Young brings a youth energy to his role (which is written kind of a recalcitrant character) and makes it his own that you can’t help but eventually like him. Definitely notches up from when I last saw him in Crash Landing in Love as one of the North Korean ducklings.

Lee Hong Nae whom I first saw as the big evil in Uncanny Counter S1. His was a remarkable performance for without a face or speaking line but left an impression. In Dr Kim S3, his earnestness comes through so strongly that you just root for him and wish him success.

Watching these two makes me respect the script and casting of Dr Kim S3 for really bringing in new blood and let them shine.

A lot of rookies, already mentioned in so many comments, including Bae In-hyuk and Roh Yoon-seo, have not had any difficulty convincing me of their acting skills. I am excited to see what their next projects will be!

But, somehow, I also want to mention those who are not rookies but have not been given a chance to shine until now, such as Kang Ki-young who's finally gaining some recognition after not playing a buffoon in Extraordinary Attorney Woo, for example. We're starting to see him appear in different things and all I can say is YEAH MAN!

In a similar vein, Kim Seon-ho whose semi serious face comedic skill had been used (dare I say overused?) everywhere in k dramas until finally Hometown Cha-cha-cha let him fully explore another side for the mainstream public. (I'm saying mainstream because lucky others would have already watched his well honed skills on stage before the TV even knew he existed). The Childe is on my radar (why hasn't it been released here?!) for a taste of KSO's newly uncovered manic-like side.

So, not so much rookie actors, but perhaps it's on us, audience or cast directors, for being the rookies in judging their range.

Choi Hyun-Wook in 25, 21 surprised me with his acting skills! Looking forward to seeing him in "D.P.2"

Moon Sang-min: I have only watched him in Duty after school so far, but it seems he was great in Under the Queen's umbrella, which I have in my list.

Kang Hoon: he is not as young as the others ans he is not exactly a rookie, but I think he is still trying to find its place in Dramaland. His acting in Secret Romantic Guesthouse has been so good that I hope he can be a proper ML soon.
