Jo Boa and Kim Ro-woon are Destined With You

Jo Boa, Kim Ro-woon

What is the best way to a man’s heart? According to JTBC’s newest fantasy romance Destined With You, the answer is curses. When a 300-year-old forbidden book comes into a civil servant’s possession, she takes it upon herself to free a hotshot attorney from his malady, leading to an unforeseeable and unavoidable romance.

Playing the aforementioned civil servant Lee Hong-jo is Jo Boa (Military Prosecutor Doberman). As the lowest-ranking member of Onju City Hall, Hong-jo lives an unglamorous life dealing with countless complaints. On the outside, she appears tough, but in reality, Hong-jo feels lonely and unloved. One day, she becomes the owner of a wooden box, and her life takes a sudden turn.

Entering Hong-jo’s world is Attorney Jang Shin-yu played by Kim Ro-woon (Tomorrow). Unlike Hong-jo, Shin-yu lives every day in the spotlight, but a family curse befalls him and leaves him desperately in need for a cure. Grasping at straws, he searches for the owner of the wooden box, and unbeknownst to either of them, this fateful encounter changes their lives forever.

Complicating this romance is Hong-jo’s one-sided crush Kwon Jae-kyung played by Ha Joon (Missing: The Other Side 2). Known as Onju City Hall’s lover, Jae-kyung hides his scars behind his sweet smile, but when he sees Hong-jo growing closer with Shin-yu, something in him shifts.

The last leg of this love square is Yura (Forecasting Love and Weather), playing Shin-yu’s girlfriend Yoon Na-yeon. In the past, she bullied Hong-jo, so once she sees Shin-yu paying attention to the girl she looked down on, Na-yeon’s true nature begins to come out.

Penning the script is Noh Ji-seol (100 Days My Prince) who will be returning to the small screen after five years since her last sensational hit, and directing will be by PD Nam Ki-hoon (Big Bet, Kiss Sixth Sense). JTBC’s Destined With You will premiere in August in the Wednesday-Thursday slot.

Unavoidable? Sure, makes sense. Unforeseeable? Ha!

I'm here for all the curses. The SML and SFL sound extremely basic so far so let's hope they have something unexpected about them.

Yeah, finally news about it!

TVN and JTBC have a good future Kdramas list.

I like both actors and they didn't film in Seoul, so I'm curious about the places we will discover. I like Ha Joon, he usually chose good drama. I just hope that Yura's character won't be the usual b!!ch second female lead.

I like the premise and the actors! This has potential.

However, the second leads already sound annoying. I think Yura is in danger of becoming typecast as the bitchy SFL in all her projects.

I'm worried about half the main cast save for Jo Boa and Ha Joon. Nor do I have any soft spot for Ro-woon. I just want Ha Joon's portrayal of his character isn't typical of a SML.

But, I freaking trust in the Writer of 100 Days My Prince plus the PD of Kiss Sixth Sense. I might be checking this out.

And that premise is not something to miss. I love the love story it is yearning to unfold.

Not a Rowoon fan either, good looking chap but he brings a silliness to his roles that rub me the wrong way. Still, it’s Jo Bo Ah, so obviously I’ll watch.

You trust the writer of Kiss Sixth Sense... after *that* final episode?

I don't think I can tolerate Ro Woon even for Jo Boa and the writer of 100 Days My Prince, but the premise in very intriguing.

Huh! I’d have never guessed that Rowoon would be on your sh!tlist, @midnight. Not even in Tomorrow?

I didn't watch Tomorrow 😄 It had other actors I disliked, and I also didn't like the premise.

Well, there’s clearly no way you’ll take me up on this, and that’s cool, but to finish out what I’ve started here…if you wanted to watch a few episodes (in the main Tomorrow is episodic), I’d recommend 6 & 9.

They’re both tear-jerkers.

I know I’m risking being “That Annoying Friend,” but when I was out exercising just now—running through the episodes of Tomorrow in my head (as Beanies do)—I remembered that episode 12+ is actually quite similar to the plot of Midnight Runners in broad strokes.

So, while it’s rough going, for sure, and I didn’t include it above because of that, I know how much you adore that movie. The girls are the buddies...

I thought he was perfectly forgettable in that -for me at least- forgettable show.

I had a serious case of SML in King's Affection for Nam Yun Su's character Yi Hyun, and it was mostly because how silly I found Rawoon to be.

The casting nor the plot sound interesting, but I'll be checking it out for the writer.

I wasn't a big fan of 100 days my prince, and the leads nor the plot generate enough interest.

Sounds like something tvN would release, but is actually JTBC, weird. Nothing really brings confidence here, but maybe it would be the case of low expectations leading to a pleasant surprise?

What's the difference between the two?

tvN and JTBC? Well, the former produced TONS of fantasy romances, to the point of it becoming one of their trademark offerings, and this particular concept sounds exactly like their usual show of that genre. Hell, they even have a few lined up for upcoming drama season to support my point))) Not to say that JTBC never touched the genre themselves - they surely did, but compared to tvN it's a pretty rare occurrence for them. It's like with dark, gritty, 100% romance-free horror and crime dramas - first channel that comes to mind of an experienced kdrama watcher would be OCN... well, would've been if they were still around making shows, which I think they stopped to do. Pity.

Oh I see....in short tvN goes for fantacy romance while JTBC goes for slice of life?

There are so many TV channels....how the heck people decide on what to watch and where to watch. Phew. Most of these dramas are aired online on platforms like Netflix in selected countries. Are they broadcast in S.Korea too?

More or less, tho JTBC seems to be into family makjangs of all sorts lately lol)))

Yes, SK has Netflix and other international streaming platforms along with a few local ones to make things even more complicated. No idea how people there choose their dramas - seems to be the case of word of mouth still going strong, so when some show becomes a hot topic everyone and their moms flock wherever it airs to join the fun too... Aside of that idk.

@gikata Ah! I see.

I used to think platforms like Netflix/Amazon stream everything world wide. It's only now that I learnt they do it geographically. I am not sure if that means I will miss out on content when I am traveling to another country because it's not on the geographical list (Netflix download feature is BS). Hopefully Viki keeps the shows going.

I've never done this myself, but apparently VPN helps.

1

@gikata Can you suggest some of the thrillers?

0

@minniegupta1, OCN ones? My favorite is TUNNEL (2017) - there is a time-travel element, but it's a really good show. Very heartwarming drama, which is a strange trait for such genre, but it's true)))

I also liked VOICE Season1 (very bloody), both seasons of VAMPIRE PROSECUTOR (good old days!) and SPECIAL AFFAIRS TEAM TEN. Didn't finish WATCHER and TRAIN for can't remember what reasons - probably just got distracted with something else - but what I saw was not bad either. Also loved THE GUEST, but that's a pure occult horror and ultra dark, don't try it unless you want to be scared and scarred heavily)))

1

You're right about the network genres. I know I never came close to watching anything coming out of OCN's network save for King Of Pigs because of Kim Dong-wook and Chae Jung-ahn. I only followed OCN shows via recaps and I still avoided some nonetheless. After King of Pigs, I bade OCN goodbye once again.
It was really sad to see them stop making shows. But at least, they re-aired KoP once again before drawing the curtains on the channel.

Oh, I loved their thrillers so much, it's a huge loss for me. I know that technically they're not gone, just passed their content-making resources to tvN, but it's not the same ever since, difference IS noticeable(((

3

@gikata Thanks. I will def check out Tunnel and Special affairs, looks right up my alley. I am not a fan of gore but can endure it if it's for the right plot. Occult is not my thing so probably give that a miss.

It would be actually lovely to have a topic about our favorite tropes haha! For example, I love 'hiding in the closet' trope. I don't know why, it gets me everytime lol! However, accidental liploc can throw me off a drama for good.

The plot doesn't sound bad, but FL put me off with a few dramas. Something about her eyelid surgery is not right. They look unnatural.
ML has a girlfriend, so it'll probably be half the drama before she stops being his girlfriend. My nightmares from watching "Backstreet Rookie" are back.
