Drama viewership ratings for the week of July 17-23, 2023

It’s a lot of goodbyes this week, with Delightfully Deceitful, Happiness Battle, and See You in My 19th Life all finishing up. While we saw slight finale jumps for some, they were sadly missing for 19th Life. Meanwhile, Not Others saw a decent premiere for ENA.

As for our weekend champs, Revenant continues to perform, King the Land drops a touch out of double digits kingship (shocking!), and Durian starts to climb…

I can feel the energy rising…the DB HeartBeat crew surging…speaking together as one…how could our show possibly have a smaller audience than Delightfully Deceitful?? I mean I know it was this latter show’s final week, but still! Boo-hoo.

Nothing unusual in the KTL. The fact that Jtbc did a horrible job on representing the Arab Prince and the fact that Knetz are simply fed-up with old and cheesy troupe chaebol fall in love with a poor girl.

I don't really understand the logic behind a finale-bump. Do people who have not watched the penultimate episode really tune in to watch the last one? That just doesn't seem like a very satisfying watching experience. Is this what is happening, or am I misunderstanding this phenomenon?

I mean, I do it. I watch a show, slow down/drop it in the middle, then come back to see how it ends. That's one way it happens, for me at least...

I'm honestly just now considering this as an option, but it might be really genius. Sometimes I'm reluctant to drop things because I'm interested enough that I want to know what happens to everyone, but not enjoying myself as much as I was at the beginning. I'm going to have to look out for situations where this strategy could come in handy.

They don't necessarily watch the penultimate episode live but might want to know the end right away.

But it's more about on Saturday there are more dramas to watch with Revenant and Numbers than on the Sunday.

Not sure about SK, but TRP ratings use statistical sampling so it’s possible that the Sunday sample size is different from Sat there by showing different ratings.

Maybe it’s the same as flipping to the end of a book first before you decide to read it (in this case the watch it)? No surprising ending?
Of course I never heard of phenomena applied to television, I definitely don’t do this myself. Tho it would really make sense for the ANSWER ME series. Jealous of people who didn’t live watch it, and thus had no traumatic experience regarding which guy she’d end up with

I have waited until something has come out and then read a recap/weecap or other summary of it before I watch it. I do it when I'm expecting a show to be somewhat stressful, and I want part of that element tempered a bit. So I guess watching the last episode could do something similar? But it must make it feel really disjointed; I like the summary route better because I get a quick overview of how things play out, but all of the visuals and timing and dialogue and all the other elements aren't spoiled.

Blaming the HEARBEAT ratings on the bad reno and yellow couch. Placing bets on what colour Do-shik’s vampire hunter outfit will be?? It’s gotta be YELLOW right?? RIGHT?!

The jump in KTL ratings for Sunday is definitely gotta do with the Tiger Balm PPL. That shit works for real

I was surprised by the Tiger Balm PPL. Back in 1980’s my grandmother visited Singapore and she got all the relatives Tiger balm (a lot). My mom had frequent headaches so she would use this a lot. I grew up being used to that smell. I had no idea it was still a thing and that it need’s advertising 😱
Anyway, that PPL sent me on a nostalgic trip.

I'm wondering why 19th Life's ratings have been dropping. Is it because the quality of the writing degraded (well, IMO) or because it's such a departure from its source material, which is one of the top webcomics in Korea? Or some other reason I haven't identified?

1

I vote for too much departure from the source. The more popular a web comic is the more damage is done from changing the story.

I kinda experienced this a little with Weak Hero Class 1. I think that's the only drama I've seen that I had not only known of the source material but read & liked it (though I admit I have skipped some chapters haha. It gets so repetitive seeing the characters challenging each other or hyping up each other 😮‍💨 haha)

Yeah, I felt the same way about Kiss Sixth Sense, which barely resembled the comic. But I had high hopes for 19th Life because the creative team and cast seemed so promising, not to mention Lee Hye seemed very involved with the production.

I'm learning that webcomic adaptations are not faithful as a rule and I need to manage my expectations. We'll see how things go with A Good Day to be a Dog and Romance 101, which are also webcomics I love.

@Britney They just announced it recently! I was excited but now I'm like... oof.

Another reason is because Shin Hye-sun and Ahn Bo-hyun have no romantic chemistry. I never quite bought the romance.

I'm not interested in King the Land but its reception interests me. I don't understand what people mean by saying the premise or execution feels dated or that there's too much of an emphasis on romance which makes things boring. I thought the pretty people making out in the fancy places is what folks wanted.

I saw a complaint about another show (the one with the guy from Super Junior) and a complaint about that was also that it felt dated; as if it were a drama from 2010 or something. What does that mean?!

The only things I'm remembering from older dramas is the women being so into the guys and accepting bad treatment (and actually as I write that Boys over Flowers & Playful Kiss are the dramas I have in mind and I never understood why people liked those relationships in the first place.)

KTL is an example of too much of a good thing. I can only speak for myself, and when I claim I want fluff, what I really mean is I want a depressed FL with money problems living with her vampire boyfriend in a gothic styled haunted mansion 😉

What makes a drama dated is an interesting question, without an easy answer. Maybe it is easier to say that good characters and a solid story is the difference between a good drama and a great one. People don't change. What was relevant 20 years or more ago is still relevant now in terms of people.

This is where KTL falls short for me. I like a silly, fluffy romance as much as anybody else, but I still need interesting characters and a good story story. Throw in witty humour and I am happy.

KTL has replaced wit with PPL (there are dramas that can combine the two!) and warmed up old tropes (dated tropes?), although I wouldn't be surprised if many of these tropes were already unpopular 20 years ago.

What I cannot understand is the recommendation to watch the drama with the brain turned off - then it is nice. I watch dramas to entertain and tickle my brain, not to switch it off - I do that when I sleep.

So KTL I'm usually pretty bored, half watching, and then every so often a scene will grab me and I'm like "Wow, that was actually really good." The romance has a lot of scenes like that, and there are even a few for the hotel plot stuff. Unfortunately, I need more than that. I think it will be better now that 19th Life is over, I was slogging through that one and two dramas to slog through in a row, and on a weekend at that when I have a lot of other stuff I can be doing, is too much.

I will be honest though, there are very few dramas I watch without at least checking my phone a few times. I know I love a drama if I can give it my full attention for the full amount of time, and especially if the time just flies by. Heartbeat is like that for me right now.

THIS! It was a very good decision of me to drop both after 4 episodes.

I forgot, too, that I don't think KTL built up the romance very well. There's this balance with drawing out the tension long enough to make the inevitable conclusion far more satisfying, but not so long that you frustrate viewers. KTL went more towards the former, I think. And Gu Won falling for Sa-rang I think was incredibly rushed, as well.

3
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think it's mostly old tropes that make people say a drama seems dated, for instance, ten years ago you still got a lot of wrist grabbing and these days not so much. If a drama uses that and it's not a joke, it will seem dated.

Well, the Sunday episode of King the Land has the highest ratings on the board except for the weekender. I think these ratings do show, as you say, that pretty people making out has a big appeal, as do some of those "old and tired" rom-com tropes.

For me, despite King the Land's very uneven, in fact sometimes disappearing writing, there are once and while scenes that are surprisingly good, as @vienibenmio says.

Regardless of my response to the show though, I think generalizations about the fading appeal of romance based on these ratings don't hold much value.

I do agree that it is VERY refreshing to have a rom com that has very little trauma and no murder mysteries or serial killers. I would rather this than that!

I also think my perception of KTL is colored by 19th Life airing on the same day, and especially the weekend. I think I would have loved it a lot more if it hadn't been for 19th Life essentially exhausting me beforehand. In fact, I think I really enjoyed KTL back in the early days when I was enjoying 19th Life.

PLAYFUL KISS was miles better as manga/anime tbh. FL there actually had personality and her initial reasons to fall for ML were not as superficial as at least k-adaptation made it look. Now for why did she still stick to him after all he's done... Those were different times, girls just loved cold jerks more back then, I suppose))) It's also a genre-breaker story of sorts - teen/youth romcom that DIDN'T end with leads getting together/married, plot just kept going way after that point which was fresh and sensational at the time.

The fact that the heroine's name is also a fruit is an intentional joke, and yes, everyone in the drama thinks of the fruit as well - in fact, they are eating it when she introduces herself. It's part of the reason they think she - and her daughter-in-law whose name sounds like soju - are asylum escapees. Durian's Affair is probably my favorite show right now, just because it is taking all those old tropes we are complaining about and twisting them into pretzels.

While I remain unhappy at the one-year time skip in THE REAL HAS COME it does look like it worked because ratings have risen.

KING THE LAND is still doing well, and I'LL SEE YOU IN MY 19TH LIFE should have done better, although it really did OK.

Why did HEARTBEAT not do better? It is a good, entertaining show.
