Lee Se-young falls for past and future Bae In-hyuk

The first teaser has dropped for MBC’s upcoming fantasy romance The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract, where we follow our lost-in-time heroine Lee Se-young (The Law Cafe) as she’s transported from 19th century Joseon to present day South Korea.

Opening in her time, about 200 years back in the past, Park Yeon-woo (Lee Se-young) reflects on the magic of destiny as we watch her relationship with Bae In-hyuk (Cheer Up) blossom. In voiceover, we hear their conviction that no matter where they are or what they do, they’ll find their way to where they want to go.

Sadly, tragedy soon strikes the newlywed couple on the very night of their wedding and Yeon-woo’s husband dies in her arms. We then cut to Yeon-woo falling down a deep well, which somehow leads her to travel through time and land in the year 2023.

Here, she meets her late husband’s doppelgänger, the cold chaebol Kang Tae-ha (also played by Bae In-hyuk) who suffers from a heart disorder in addition to childhood trauma. But because this is dramaland, our leads are thrown into a contract marriage – for various reasons yet unknown – and destiny does what she does best by bringing in that thing called love.

Although the teaser focuses on our main pair, the web novel adaptation also stars Yoo Seon-ho (Under the Queen’s Umbrella) as Tae-ha’s younger half- brother and Joo Hyun-young (Behind Every Star) in the role of Yeon-woo’s maidservant.

Directed by PD Park Sang-hoon (My Secret Terrius) with scripts by Go Nam-jung (Wife Scandal), MBC’s The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract is slated to air this November, following part 2 of My Dearest in the weekend slot.

‘Nona’ romances are a good thing. Male actors who are older than their female counterparts just have romances in KDs without a qualifier but the converse has a name to trigger a reminder that women’s desirability has a limited shelf-life.

I complain about massive age gaps in "Oppa" romances too. I always prefer they are around the same age. So that they are 1 or 2 years apart male or female. Here is 5 years, which isn't terrible, but I feel like they could have cast closer to her age.

Oh, five years is nothing considering we have a 16-year age gap in another current drama. If we had a five-year diff in the reverse gender direction, I don’t think *most* ppl would even blink.

Is this real noona romance or "noona in casts-only" (their characters are the same age in the drama)?

I just noticed the latter is gaining popularity recently, like in Crash Course in Romance where the leads are 10 years apart IRL but their characters are written of the same age, and also The Glory (which makes less sense) because you can clearly see that Song Hye-Kyo and Lee Do-Hyun are ages apart ...

They were supposed to be the same age in The Glory? Haha

They are (cmiiw?) and I think Moon Dong-Eun (Song Hye-Kyo's character) called Yeo-Jung sunbaenim a lot ...

Oh I don't think this is being classified as a noona romance. I meant noona in cast only. I think they are meant to be the same age in the drama, maybe, lol.

As long as they give the characters in the drama age appropriate, no underage and adult romance regardless the gender, I'm fine with it. They just play a character, their real life age doesn't matter much, unless if the actor is underage and has to act explicit scene which is a No (try to find other younger looking adult actor, PD nim). Though I'm not fan of noona romance, but other people may be, so go on

This sounds like Trope City, but I am HERE for it! Time-slip, destined lovers, finding each other through different lives, contract marriage, chaebol ML, childhood trauma, terminal illness - the list just goes on and on. I'm always down to try a drama like this. You just never know when it will all add up to *magic*. And if it doesn't? I hope the train wreck is entertaining rather than annoying. pleasepleaseplease.

I hope her character in this will have a much more empowered and far far less tragic life that in the RS.

I do not think this is based on a webtoon.

mdl entry for the drama gives this reference.

~~ Adapted from the webtoon "The Story of Park's Marriage Contract" (열녀박씨 계약결혼뎐) written by Angelique (안젤리크) and Kim Neo Ul (김너울), and illustrated by Dotda (닷다).

2

@seeker: Thanks for pasting in the Korean title. For some reason, I routinely forget to look them up. Because of you, I looked up one word which I didn’t know in the title and that’s ‘열녀’. Guess what it is translated as? ‘Virtuous woman’! No, the world wasn’t and isn’t controlling and obsessed with girls’ and women’s “purity and morality”.

3

@seeker Thanks for the title! I was just relying on the article.

@dncingemma "No, the world wasn’t and isn’t controlling and obsessed with girls’ and women’s “purity and morality”. - You bet, I am tired and fed up of this.

In red sleeve, the historical accuracy forbids to give her a happier ending than the reality.

So much of the rest of TRS was based on a novel and not remotely true but you’re right that the bare bones of the tragic ending was accurate.

But, at least, they could have ended how they started with a great funeral for the woman the King loved and the epitaph he wrote for her.

They really short-changed U-Bin given the reverence for Jeongjo. And, while I don’t know if it was pre-produced or not but if it wasn’t, once they realised how well Junho was doing with the audience, they would have focused even more of the story on him even though the title was “The Red Sleeve”. That’s why the ending seemed so unbalanced and infuriating despite the entral tragedy of U-Bin’s life.

This reminds me of my favorite storyline in Durian's Affair. Then include contract marriage with time slip, I know I will definitely check this out. I like LSY and BIH so its a plus!

Nah its better not to watch it. I stuck with it because it was weirdly fascinating at first but only liked the younger couples storyline in the end. Their story is similar to this drama.
I hope this will also be easily accessible to most fans.

🧐 I feel like having a déjà vue - but not in a bad way…! The tropes here sound right up my alley. If it’s available in my region, I’ll give it a try!

But he is a chaebol!! I have had it with this archetype. Can’t their use other tropes to lull the masses into submission?

the alternative is to get a really exceptional actor and give the character a charming personality that does not rely on his attitude towards his bank account. Easier to just make him a chaebol.

How about no bloody chaebols at all as romantic characters? Criminal, greedy and exploitative yes but not a sanitising ‘love cures all’ story. That much money has always the blood, sweat and tears of others in it.

Waow it's a pot-pourri of different tropes!

I like both actors, so why not. But I'm a little bit concerned by the cast, Lee Se-Young is surrounded by young actors who look young.

"Fell down a well. Husband died whilst they were yet fresh newlyweds"...Oh! Durian's Affair is reprising itself here. The only difference is Phoebe isn't writing it.
Lee Se-young looks pretty in that wedding dress.
The story remains engaging. I just hope it can live up to the gravitas My Dearest uses to complete it end.

Bae In-hyuk ain't bad either. I just hope the write style him as they did in Under The Queen's Umbrella - matured.

I feel like the writer sat in a room with her assistants and they gleefully spun the wheel picking out tropes, the crazier the trope combinations the more fervent they wrote the story. Let’s see how deliciously good or bad this can get but Bae’s already a plus point for me.

A woman transported from the past to the modern world where she explores opportunities that have opened up to her gender but learns the many ways they remain bound by society? Well, sign me the up!

Yeah, OK. It’s probably not this drama. But excited still!
