[Drama chat] That one 2023 drama you missed

K-dramas continue to explode, with countless streaming services and networks creating content content content. But with such a flood of dramas it’s easy to get lost. Or overwhelmed. Or underwhelmed. Because truly, sometimes more is just more, and it doesn’t mean better, greater, or richer stories.

That being said, if you’ve been hanging out in dramaland for 2023, there’s definitely a drama or two that you meant to watch that slipped off your list — either you forgot, got distracted by other titles, or are saving it for a rainy day.

What’s on your list from 2023? Two dramas on my save pile are The Interest of Love and One Day Off. Both are dramas I want to curl up and watch without having to share my feels with anyone but my cup of hot cocoa.

What’s that one 2023 drama you missed? Or, what 2023 dramas are you saving for a rainy day?

With the exception of "Moving" i pretty much skipped every single streaming "original" drama, none of them looked particularly appealing.

I still need to watch Doctor Romantic 3, i enjoyed the first 2 seasons but all the fans seem to hate the latest one, i will get round to it eventually.

Overall with the exception of a few gems, it was a pretty weak year for K-dramas, C-dramas and J-dramas

I like Dr Kim S3. It’s not strictly following the format of S1 and S2. That alone is worth watching if you are a fan of the two earlier seasons.

1, Moving: I think I might be the only person in Kdrama-ville who hasn't yet watched this, but it came out during a time of intense stress for me and I just couldn't follow along with it from the beginning. Since then, I've been planning on starting it asap, yet I just................ haven't.

2. My Lovely Boxer: I wanted to wait till it was completed but then I got busy with other shows. I think I'll give it a go during my semester break.

3. My Dearest: I love Namgoong Min and had my eyes on this show for a long while. I wanted to wait for part 2 so I could binge it all together but when part 2 came out the reviews were too disappointing that I lost all motivation. *insert shrug*

4. Destined With You: kept putting it off because I thought I disliked Rowoon but I've been proven wrong by The Matchmakers!

5. Revenant: I keep chicken-ing out, someone please explain in detail how scary it is on a scale of 1-10!

Revenant is okay and I'm a scaredy cat. I mean it is not as scary as I thought it would be. Can say it is a detective drama more than a horror drama. Ghost parts are subtle as it is not the main point of this drama. I binge watched it because it makes me so curious I don't care about the ghost.

Seconding this - I thought is was interesting, but it didn't have as many jump scares and classic horror tropes. It was just a show about ghosts and possession. I'd say give it a shot! On a 1-10 scale I'd say maybe a 6?

My Dearest pt 1 is worth it anyway. It's a story in and of itself. The war setting really set it apart and made it a notch above the rest imo. Since part 2 lost that, it wasn't as compelling. Let me know if you decide to try at least pt 1!

I'm definitely going to give it a go soon, I just need to be in the right mood for the tragedy that I'm sure will have me down in the dumps for hours. As for part 2, if i don't wanna watch it all, I'll just read the recaps here!

I am too scared to watch Revenant too. The most recent ghost series that I watched was Lockwood & Co. Can anyone gauge the scare level of Revenant compared to L&C?

I know that Rowoon has his fans but, diplomatically, his performance in The Matchmakers is one of his better ones. Probably because the part is easier, these fusion male leads are not that hard to play (although they are adorable). I wouldn't use it as a guide for his performance in Destined With You, which is... pretty bad actually. In some places almost embarrassing. I'm still not sure why he plays pain and discomfort as arousal but that kind of works in the Matchmakers where his character is supposed to be super repressed and sexually frustrated. In Destined it's just a bit weird.

2

Required fields are marked *

For me, Destined with You had the best couple in 2023! They were pretty fun to watch.

Rowoon was very good in this role. He was the typical cold ML until he was hit by a love spell and then he couldn't control his body/words that made a really funny mix.

He looked very different from his role in Matchmakers, more mature and adult and sexy. He was clearly not the same innoncent boy :p

He was great in the more emotional scenes too.

Required fields are marked *

The Matchmakers I feel like I've betrayed Rowoon by not live watching this (if you're somehow reading this, which is obviously very plausible, I'm so sorry - it's not you it's me) but I've been saving it to binge once it finishes airing. I liked what I saw of his character but wasn't too sold on the other elements of the story/not sold enough to compete with other on air watches, so thought it'd fare better as a binge watch.

Interest of Love is also one I've been saving @missvictrix - I'm fully aware of the plot and want to watch it because I know what happens but I've got to be in the right mood to appreciate the melo. So just waiting for that mood to swing around like it does every few months or so!

Moon in the Day and LYOL are ones that I haven't exactly 'missed' - I'm just waiting for them to be done so I can do a quick fast forward filler watch and just catch any scenes I do like!

I also feel bad for not live watching The Matchmakers, but for me, it's because I think I'm going to love it so much, that I want the time to savor it or bingewatch it at my own pace. So we're in the same boat with saving this one!! And LOL I have a morbid curiosity about Moon in the Day, so I might try a few episodes later on 😂

I love his style sooooo much! Even if he had been a one-hit wonder and just directed Into the Ring, he'd still be my favorite PD 😁 I watched the first half hour of ep 1 of Matchmakers, and it's insanely gorgeous. And I agree with you - I can see his style, and I love it 🥰

7

Wait, it's by the one who directed Into the Ring? I LOVED the direction on that!!!! Moved up on my "to watch" list

I still want to see Stealer: The Treasure Keeper and only didn't at the time because it wasn't accessible to me...has that changed since for US-based viewers?

Of the growing number of dramas in the idol-teen-based-drug-comedy genre floating aoround, I sort of wanted to see Sound Candy. It looked ethereal and I hoped it would be so bad it's good. Same problem though. Availability. @reply1988 wasn't too thrilled about it, so this is only a light desire of mine.

Lastly, and more pressingly--although it's not my favorite genre--I've not yet seen Revenant and plenty of folks I trust rave about it.

Stealer is at risk of slipping into the "missed in 2023" category for me; I've gotten to ep. 3 (on Tubi) and thoroughly enjoyed it so far, but I keep not getting back to it because I can't even stay up to date with live watches.

The Deal, Secret Romantic Guesthouse, The Killing Vote, and Boyhood are all on my list but there are only 3 weeks left in the year and it's clearly not going to happen. And there are more dramas coming. 😶

Oh my gosh that sounds fun! I'd join in again! Ya'll know that Kim Jae-won, the handsome flight attendant in King the Land, is the adorable maknae in Stealer, right? 😉 And @elinor, I'm saving Boyhood for 2024. If it's not somewhere legit by the end of January, I'll go, ahem, "elsewhere."

7

@hopefulromantic!! I did NOT know that absolutely amazingly important piece of information about Kim Jae-won...

ALSO, did I get my 2023 crush wrong??????

No, no, calm down, Seon-ha, he was born in 2001. I have to set some limits around here, or I'll get a reputation 🤣😘

4

@attiton I know, right???? I even watched the KBS Drama Special Like Otters for him - it was not great, but he was. I know he's so young 😅 But so cute in Stealer!!

3

@HopefulRomantic @attiton And there's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it reference to 🦦*otters*🦦 for him, too.

I've already gone "elsewhere" to find Boyhood - the problem is finding the time for it, but a 2024 Fanwall Watch in the bleak midwinter is a terrific idea.

3

@hopefulromantic

I loved Like Otters! The characters were so lonely and found each other. They were cute together.

3

Oh I didn’t realize Stealer was available now! Please let me know when y’all are watching it, I’d love to join!

Mainly Moving: I wanted to watch it, but when it aired I somehow lost interest, despite all the praises I read everywhere. I knew it was full of violence and in that moment I wasn't in the mood for that kind of story.

And One day off, Crash course in romance, The interest of love, My perfect stranger...

Required fields are marked *

For what it's worth, Isa, if you watch Moving in the same way that I did--with your finger poised on the FF button to skip all of the intensely gory scenes of utterly outrageously exaggerated violence--it's much shorter than its published length.

I'd say you cut your watch time by at least a quarter, if not a third, and believe me, the plot does NOT progress in those fights. For me, it was enough to know that they happened--I didn't need to know exactly whose bones were broken how!! 🫣

Required fields are marked *

I'll take your advice 😉

You know, these days I'm watching Sweet Home Season 1 and I have no problem with this level of gore and violence (I guess watching almost all the seasons of The Walking Dead helped), but I'm not sure about the violence in Moving...

2
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

The violence in Walking Dead was 10x more grotesque than Moving. The extreme violence in shows like The Boys, invincible, and Game of Thrones makes Moving look like child’s play.

5
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Sometimes in Walking Dead I had to hide my eyes (a famous character's death... I couldn't watch it), but I think I got used to that kind of violence and the show was so good that I kept watching it.

I watched all Game of Thrones too (and I had previously read the books, which are very explicit).

2

I have watched some very gory crime shows. I can very easily avert my eyes at the exact right time.
I did the same with The Perfect Deal, and I could get through it with no problem.

But I watched Brave Citizen this past week and I am still shaken from the violence. It just hit different.

Most of the shows I haven't watched that I wanted to were ones I couldn't watch because they aired on streaming services I don't subscribe to, and well, our subscription budget is pretty maxed out right now. The two big k-dramas in this category were Call it Love and Moving, as well as a whole bunch of Chinese & Taiwanese shows. Hopefully some of these will ultimately get picked up by a service I do have (or Disney+ will actually start airing its shows on Disney+ in the US).

10

reply

Required fields are marked *

Ouch, I feel your pain. The Disney strategy regarding Kdramas in the USA is nonexistent. I’m twiddling my thumbs waiting for Tell Me that you love me to be available somewhere.
My top 2 dramas this year out of 20+ that I’ve finished were Call it Love and Moving - the 2 shows you don’t have access to. Both ended up on Hulu.
If there was a bean for best streaming service content for 2023 - Hulu would win. Quality over quantity.

Required fields are marked *

I may break down at some point and get Hulu, but it annoys me that they want you to pay for content with ads, and that you can't actually see what's currently available without a subscription.

7
5
reply

Required fields are marked *

I agree, that's an irritating aspect of Hulu. It's also frustrating that they don't have a "Korean" rubric, and searching for that term doesn't necessarily turn up all of their Korean shows. I do have a subscription - feel free to ask for a search anytime. Justwatch.com/us is also pretty good for that info.

Disney+ seems to have looked at what made Kdramas successful in the US and how other services capitalized on them and then done the exact opposite in every way.

4
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Thank you for the reminder to cancel my Disney+ subscription- I hate that service, I hate that app and I HATE their kdrama policy. Yuck!

3

I HATE that you can't see what they have without a subscription. HATE it. It's a stupid way to do business. If people could search and find a show on there, you'd think it would drive them to subscribe. But if you don't even know what's on there, why on earth would you sign up? (Much less pay to see something with ads!)

FWIW you can subscribe to JUST Hulu, watch what you want to see, and then unsubscribe until the next show you want is on. Hulu is where Disney shoves their Kdramas in the US. (Since I only watch Asian media anymore, that's the only thing of interest to me from them.) I did a short subscription to catch Moving (which was well done and had some very heart hitting moments, though a lot of it was over the top of my normal violence threshhold). I also watched Link while I was there, which I enjoyed (plus it has a great soundtrack).

4
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think part of why I'm so annoyed is that I used to watch k-dramas periodically on Hulu, back when it was both free with ads and actually searchable. This is a case where a company has gone out of its way to make its product worse, and it makes me not want to support it financially in any way, even if it means I miss out on some good shows.

4

@wonhwa I hear you!

I think Disney does not understand the Kdrama market. They seem to underestimate the global impact of Korean media. It feels like (from the way they position themselves on their Korean social media pages) that they went into Korea primarily to market their existing western media, and the Kdramas are an afterthought. They did more promotion for Moving (because it was so expensive to make, I think), and hopefully they have noticed that Moving did well. But I wish they would wake up and realize that a lot of the world is looking to Korea as their primary entertainment interest, and that locking up Kdramas in a very small room is a poor business choice.

Actually there are quite a few of them, you made me feel a bit guilty))) Thing is, after some huge turning point in my life I've decided to not waste my precious time on things I'm rather unsure about, dramas included. So now if my intuition and analytical skills tell me "how about nope?", then usually nope it is. Brutal, but simple. I still sentimentally finish far more shows than I objectively should, but baby steps. Perhaps one day, when things are better, I can go back to my previous carefree, forgiving self and give those current rejects another chance. Would be nice, isn't it? But not today.

K-drama FOMO is definitely a thing, especially on sites like DB, which are as entertaining as the dramas themselves. A few years ago I started planning my time around the concept of "cultivating what matters," and while what matters can change from time to time, a commitment to focusing on what's most important at any given time is truly a game changer. Wishing you a wonderful 2024 @gikata even if it turns out you don't watch a single drama. 🤗

I hope that you found something else that helped you switch off instead. You can always come back to dramaland when the time is right for you.

I missed Twinkling Watermelon. I was a bit interested, but with all the things going on in my offline life, and with all the other dramas that were airing at the same time, I wasn’t intrigued enough to start it when the first episodes dropped. Then, even when I read the first few weecaps and thought it sounded like fun, I still didn’t have the time to catch up. But I’m about to watch the first episode! So even though I won’t get a bean for it this year, it won’t be one I miss entirely.

Great choice and if you finish it before year end you can add it to your bean count on the post and it will still go on the stats that are being collated by one of the bean counters in the community.

I found this year pretty dull in terms of K-drama offerings... or maybe I was in a prolonged slump? I am now currently watching 3 shows live, which barely happened during the year. On my "to-watch" list are "Moving" and "Castaway Diva", the only two I know I will definitely catch. I dropped "see you in my 19th life" even though I was excited having read the webtoon ( I think I generally have a hard time with Bo Hyun Ahn); it's on my "might pick it back up" list.

After Secret Romantic Guesthouse was awarded a Bean of Greatness I put it on my "snowy day" watch list. I think I started ithe show but it fell off the table.

I think I missed all 2023 dramas LOL I don't know why but I mainly watched older shows, all the way to 2016.
I did however see:
* The glory*
*The good/bad mother*
*Uncanny counter s1+s2*
*Black knight*.
I ended up dropping *Perfect marriage revenge* halfway and I just started *Park's marriage contract* which I hope to finish before the year is over!

The one I really want to watch is The Day of Kidnapping. I hope it turns up someplace I can find it.

Evilive—KYK and I don’t have access to it anywhere that is legal!

Also, dropped all of Rowoon’s dramas this year although I had every intention of watching them

And the Moon show. I wanted to see this time slip drama too. But after Twinkling watermelon and now Parks marriage, with a remake of Some Day One Day, three was enough, I guess.

I saw lots of others though. Through pretty much every legal steaming site in the US.

My Dearest. I love Ahn Eun Jin but I am not fond of historicals. Maybe I will watch it at some point but not right now

Two that I thought I would like that I never watched were The Good Bad Mother and Twinkling Watermelon. Youtube offered me excerpts from both of them and I kept thinking, "these are both my kind of thing," but when I tried to watch them I couldn't do it. I watched most of Call It Love but couldn't watch the end.

I don’t live watch, and I don’t especially try to keep up with the most recent shows—so the list of 2023 shows I haven’t yet watched is much longer than the ones I have. The ones I will definitely get around to watching sooner rather than later are:
Kidnapping Day
Moving
Payback
Family: The Unbreakable Bond
Perfect Marriage Revenge
Stealer
The Matchmakers
See You in My 19th Life

Mmmm this was a bit difficult for me - not that this year was a great year for dramas, but I have two that I liked for two very different reasons.

1. Taxi Driver 2 - I missed the bus on this the first time around, but I DEFINITELY caught a taxi on Season 2. Such a fun ride.

2. Daily Dose of Sunshine - funny, thoughtful and suited to the actors' strengths, I enjoyed this one for a more contemplative look at live.

I just started watching Twinkling Watermelon, I like it so far.

I'd like to watch Dr. R3 and Moving but I'm not sure I want to pay for Hulu.

I'm good at dropping a drama if I don't like the first few EPS, I have no interest in wasting my time! The most annoying dramas are when I've watched like 3/4 through and THEN it goes downhill ...

...episodes, not EPS

Definitely recommend One Day Off - it really is a light, curl-up-on-the-couch type drama. Goes quick!

Based on all the love for it... Call It Love. For most of 2023 I wasn't watching romance-centric dramas but I'm in that cycle now. Time to catch up.

Also My Lovely Boxer. I love a good FL In Sports drama.

Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938.

I don't count the ones that are ongoing: My Demon, Story of Park's Marriage Contract, Good Day to Be a Dog, Gyeongseong Creature, etc.
