This year I made a note of notable acting performances in the k-dramas that I watched. I did so to acknowledge good actors and to make a list of people I may want to track in future projects. In award style nominations:

BEST ACTRESS:
LEE NA-YOUNG: she perfectly captured the mood and expression of One Day Off
LIM JI YEON: she was intense in the Glory but better in Lies Hidden in My Garden
HAN JI MIN: Butt Touch quirkiness, mannerisms and characterizations were very good and cute.
PARK GYU-YOUNG: Good Day to Be a Dog; quirky and cute; much different than Celebrity.
SHIN HYE-SUN: See you in my 19th Life emotional scenes were outstanding even when story was a left down; another in-your-face character in Welcome to Samda-ri.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS:
JUNG JI-SO: nailed diverse roles: most likable in Curtain Call; most intense in The Glory which set the stage for the entire story
JO A-RAM: Dr. Cha character with the most common sense and growth.
LEE RE: young teen in Castaway Diva.
KIM HYO JIN: the real diva cast away by her agency in Castaway Diva
KIM MI-KYUNG: The Nation’s Favorite Mother: Switch (movie), Dr. Cha, Welcome to Samdal-ri and Tell Me You Love Me simultaneously .

BEST ACTOR:
KIM DUNG-OH: The intense husband in Lies Hidden in the Garden
KIM BYUNG-CHUL: His performance made everyone hate his character in Dr. Cha.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR:
MOON WOO-JIN in Castaway Diva as abused teen.
KIM HEE WON: the Captain in Behind Your Touch was the steady element of reason and comedy, the balance that the show tried to convey.
KANG YOU-SEOK: even though Kim Woo-bin was the lead, Black Knight’s story was about Sa-wol’s Luke Skywalker arc.

BEST CHILD ACTOR:
PARK SO YI See You in My 19th Life, Switch (movie)

Ajhumma is on a roll - as always but then this year so was uri Healer. 💕
Kim Mi Kyung was also in Death's Game, Agency and Crash Course in Romance. Next month she'll be in Knight Flower. How many clones does she have - all of whom act so well. 🤣

Next 2 weeks wil clear all the weather outcome.

Boxing Day - you have sporting events - i have always not liked it but then its holiday time - business time - people aka spectators aka audience need to be entertained so professional players have to play sports and can't get to spend this time with their family.

Christmas has best marketing guy - as i always say - the santa. Santa is best marketing employee of whole business world - you can associate santa with a religion but the as everyone can see santa is best promoter of the interests of business world. money has its on charm - power.

This also allows santa to be very much a joyous personality who share happiness with everyone - Santa is one of the biggest achiever - socially - politically and even economically.

As for December - December is month of +ve feel good kids n family movies to enjoy as cold season ensures you don't leave home and get to spend time together.

Every year same thing - you make plans of travel - in cold season when things that can go oh-ho usually go oh-ho. Why waste time on road and face the hassle everywhere when its crowded and weather is being as expected. This looks too troublesome - a storm won't can make it easy in summer compare to december.

Food - like cold season because the food has variety - and i like hot hot food and this season allows you to have hot hot food - though i've yet to taste hot food after 2019 - variety in vegetables - fruits - dryfruits and everything. your taste buds feel so good and you gain weight that you usually lose in summer.

have stil to taste any fruit in 2023 - haha - only 9 more days to go - this is what is entertainment is.

Tourette day in the library! One woman yelled "Defence department go to hell!" and slammed the door (we don´t have a defence department, just a roll of plastic we cover books in ), and a guy was looking at his tax revenues and screamed " SEX, SEX, SEX!!!!"

also one woman wanted to borrow a dumbbell AND a blood pressure device. If she is worried about blood pressure maybe not lift weights?

anyway it is a happy day because the day will get longer now and it is My Demon day.
also watching Goryo Khitan War, I find many characters likable, tangible and human. It is a slow pace drama but well fleshed and engaging in a quiet way.
and Sweet Home: I have to keep rewinding and watching again because it is still too dark. for any daylight scenes on the outside, hallelujah.

I made gingerbread pigs this morning, also foxes, roosters and mushrooms. I have weird shapes at home.

where is my substitute, I want my lunch break.

Hahahaha you could write a book on just the things you hear/are asked at the library!! The random cursing at the defence department reminds me of graffiti I saw on a post box near my work place - it wasn't even in spray paint though it was in permanent marker 💀 - and it said (the mildly censored version ➡️ ) 'f*ck ASIO motherf*kers'. I laughed so hard because it's SO RANDOM. ASIO is the aussie spy agency but unlike the CIA or whatever you hardly ever hear about them in the news or anything so it's not like a commonly thought of or hated department. So the fact that someone was incensed enough to curse at them on a post box in the middle of nowhere kind of (my workplace is a bit out of the city) was very funny.

Ever had one of those weeks where, on Wednesday, you have a question and think, "Oh! I should post that on Open Thread!" and then by Friday, you remember having had the thought, but have absolutely no idea what the question actually was?? Yeah.

So, in lieu of whatever that was, I'd like to take a moment to wish you all the the best on this day-after-the-Winter-Solstice!!! It's all uphill from here, Beanies!!! The days may still be getting colder (here in the Northern Hemisphere, anyway) but the light is returning! ☀

Required fields are marked *

Yes we all have that week!!

But today, prompted by what you said, I do have a question I would like to ask, and I think there's no better place than here, and in an open thread.

Beanies, is the phrase "What a life" used to indicate a life with great dificulties/unhappiness, as explained in Collins dictionary? I used to think it could be used with both positive or negative meaning depending on the specific context of saying. So I was taken by surprise when I read that explanation in Collins dictionary just now.

Required fields are marked *

Hmm. I think it's all in your tone. "What a life!!!" said quickly and with an upwards trending emphasis on life could mean, "Can you believe how rich that guy is?? I wish I had his life." But if you said, "What...a...life" slowly and with each word tonally shifting down in your vocal register, that would imply sympathy and sadness for whatever was going on with that person (or yourself).

That's my impression as a US speaker of English, anyway!

Musical actor Sung Tae-joon (40) (sadly, no English wikipedia entry about him; his Kdrama credits included Lovely Horribly and Happy Sisters) had a head injury from prop sword. His agency Hicon Entertainment, on December 20, said that in the earlier part of the show, he was gashed in his head from a prop sword in an accident. He then continued the show with bleeding and immediately went to the hospital once the show ended. I hope he will be fine and recovered soon.

The Friday Vixen Missive from the Edge of Christmas Weekend:

1. I finished Round #1 of Christmas goodie-making - 1 tray of super squidgy and rich Double Dark Chocolate Brownies, 1 tray of Lemon and Blueberry Pound Cake (with fresh Lemon Syrup soaked in), and 1 batch of Grapefruit, Orange, and Whiskey Christmas Marmalade done!

Tomorrow belongs to making Cranberry, Chocolate, and Almond Biscotti; Grapefruit, Orange, and Apricot Brandy Christmas Marmalade; and Red Velvet Marble Cake.

2. I have fallen head over paws in musical love at first listen to Korean Alt-Pop/Rock band The Rose. Unusually, they do NOT have a mediocre song in their entire repertoire - everything is sonic cotton candy with an edge that is gorgeously written and performed. Woosung (their lead vocalist) has the most sublime raspy Rock voice!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ru8LG-_HGd4

And now I'm considering attending their concert next year as I'll be travelling to visit friends in a city which happens to be one of their 2024 tour stops.

3. Christmas/New Year break has started and I'm looking forward to watching GYEONGSEONG CREATURE and catching up with a bunch of other series over the next few days.

4. I've been finalising travel plans for 2024 as I need a major change of scenery and I'm having a major case of itchy feet. Everything is so bloody expensive now especially if you're from a Global South country with a weak-ass currency. *Heavy sigh*

5. Insomnia. I bloody hate insomnia. Especially when I finally fall asleep at 3am and The Furry Canine Family Member decides that 4am would be a wonderful time to sing the song of his people. *eyeroll*

Last night I fell asleep at 2.30am... only to be waken up this morning at 6.00am by the furball because he had to go pee. At least this time he peed. Once, he woke me up only to go outside for him to wander about the front yard and I had to catch him to take him back inside (he did NOT want to go back in) *headdesk*

2

1. I want all that. 🥺
I bet it's all delicious. Enjoy it!
2. I don't know that many songs of The Rose, but I agree. They have a beautiful sound.
I hope you get to go to their concert!
3. Kdramaland is on fire these days, you have a lot of catching up to do!
4. I hope you find something affordable. December is a really tough month for the wallet.
5. Is there a way you can talk with someone to help you change your canine family member's routine/habits?
Insomnia sucks, and every hour of sleep counts. I hope you find a solution.

2

@Tabong - Oh if I do go to the concert, I will be right there in a crop top and leather trousers and brightly-coloured hair hopping up and down singing along to the songs and screaming "WOOSUNG OPPA!" Hahahahahahahhahaha!

Got caught up in the whirlpool of post surgery complications and for a moment even forgot why the doctor's office would be closed on Monday. To the receptionist, I must have seemed deranged to expect them to be open on Christmas day :P But when you're ill and in and out of the hospital, things like holidays start to lose their meaning. Just an interesting observation as someone who just experienced surgery for the first time and the myriad complications that arise. Cheers to good health. Hi, beanies de mi corazón!
I hope you had a great week!

The end of the year is near. This is the time to reflect about our past year, think of what we've learned, get all sentimental or energetic, and pretend we're going to do a million new and better things next year. Hahaha.

I thought "I can make a list, a promise or a wish of what I want for 2024 and wait it happens, or I can just start now and make it happen!" I'm the type that promises something on December 31 and regrets it on January 1st. So yeah, I need to start now. 😂

Something that life and kdramas, have remind me this year, is to listen, communicate and be brave. I've always been the "I'm always right. My way is the way" type and I've always been a runner —I literally can't watch awkward scenes on tv shows, so imagine how bad I handle real life problems. LMAO

But I think I've improved little by little in the last few months. Baby steps!

Anyway, one thing that kdramas made me add to the list of things I want to do in 2024 is learning sign language. If I move to another country next year, I'm screwed, tho. LOL

So, talking about sign language, is Mo Eun a genius? And why doesn't her hands hurt? How did she managed to memorize things so quickly? How can she understand all those signs? His hands move FAST. Signs are way too fast, and you can't blink or think or look one second to another place.

At the beginning I thought she was pretending to not understand, but now I believe her. I'm even curious how can she understand anything at all. She doesn't go around with a book of signs like Yi Chan, so how can she understand? And why doesn't her hand hurt? Why? I'm jealous of her healthy body and memorizing skills.

And I feel like schools instead of making kids hate foreign languages with how boring they teach them, they could just teach sign language. That way at least everyone in the country can communicate with everyone.

Required fields are marked *

That last paragraph is such good suggestion. Sadly, today’s nowadays tend to want their kids to secure a place at a uni more than understand people who use different languages in their communities. I must say I’m intrigued by sign language, too. But each country has their own sign language, right?

Re the FL of Tell Me, I believe that’s just for the sake of shooting this show. I’m sure not many, if any, would be able to develop their sign language that last. But I also guess she always tries to speak and let him read her lips also helps. So her signs may not have to be perfect for him to understand her.

3

reply

Required fields are marked *

But it's crazy because kids spend years and years "learning" english, for example. Schools could use at least half of that time teaching english properly, and the other half teaching other languages from our country, including sign language.
Yes, it's different in each country.

Mo Eun is on another level. Fast learner or flash learner? hahaha (sorry for the bad joke). But it's nice that she makes mistakes (like the umbrella scene) and that she always repeats what she thinks she understood from his signs so he can correct her, and she asks a lot too (like the watermelon scene).

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

🎅🎄Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! 🎇🍾
I hope you will forgive me for extending my best wishes early, but I cannot be present on OT next week and I am not waiting until next year! 😤

Next Friday afternoon I am meeting my best friend near her office and together we will commute towards her place where I will stay until Monday the first of January. Our third friend we often go shopping with is joining in on the fun, but at this moment in time we have no idea yet what exactly we are going to eat or do. We plan do to some (grocery) shopping on Saturday and keep it simple in general, so there is no need (yet?) to panic.

Before that I am spending this weekend baking some pastries for the Christmas gathering at my sister’s place. I am looking forward to the many appetizers, desserts and presents. I asked for a coupon to buy myself even more books, but my little niece has dropping hints about possible other presents…🎁

Christmas day used to be a big family gathering, but my grandparents can no longer handle so many family members, so it has been just them, their children, and spouses for a couple of years now. While I understand, I am still angry about the way my aunts and uncles went about it. Since their children all had partners and thus another family to celebrate with, they felt excluding the grandchildren would be no big deal. Guess who is single since birth and spending the big day alone?🤦‍♀️

But hey, I do not have to share food or the remote!🤪

What are folks thoughts & feelings about group projects? If you were assigned to work in a group and the other folks didn't participate, would you exclude them from the credits? Would you just suck it up as unfair and put their names in the project? Would you half ass the project so you all get subpar grades together?

Personally, I'm a loner so I would HATE having to do a group project and I would hate it even more if I had to do all or most of the work and everyone else still benefitted.

Group projects are less about the project and more about lessons in working together.
You can accomplish more as a team than as an individual.
You will eventually learn that you need to expend effort to align everyone to “row in the same direction”.
You will find out that everyone feels like they are over communicating to other team members but in reality, everyone is under communicating.
You might learn the proper way to give feedback to your team
You might learn how to generate a sense of urgency
Most of all - I hope you find a way to find joy winning as a team.

Sorry - stepping off my management soapbox right now. I used to feel like you do now. I wish I had a coach and mentor back then to help me see the future and to think a little bit different.

That is a wonderful way of explaining it. Not good with good projects myself (guess that came from under communication, fear of speaking up) as I always ended up doing most of the work, but it should have some benefits, shouldn’t it?

I hope I learned how to do this properly early on in life. The habit is hard to change when you are older.

Ohh, group projects. Hahaha.

I'm the type that will spam your phone until you appear and do your part. If you don't do your part bye bye bye. I'll tell the teacher I want to work alone and that's it.

I got the nickname "trunchbull" because of my bad temper in high school. But I it wasn't that bad because I knew how to make my friends work.
In college, with my new friends, I exclude myself from the group (bye bye bye) once. They even made me cry. But after that they started being more responsible.

If it is with people I'm not close with, I prefer to observe and watch how they act first.

BUT those are just cases when you work with people you're not compatible. If you find people with the same rhythm as you, everything's great! You get to work, bond and have fun.

Oooh group projects! As a control freak, I generally hate relying on others/have to hand over some element of control to others so group projects aren't fun BUT I did have an experience on the other side of the fence which kind of changed my perspective on how harsh I am to slackers:

For context, the way my Uni does it is that you get an overall project mark but then everyone in the group has to fill in this survey where you basically can be open and honest about how the other people in the group were and score them. The teachers then look at how your group mates assessed you and then rationalise that with the project mark to give you your specific grade for the project - so e.g. if a project gets a distinction mark BUT someone gets poorly scored because they did nothing, that person's grade for the project would then be adjusted to somewhat reflect their input - so they might get a credit or pass instead of a distinction mark because their group mates basically said they did nothing. I think the system tries to aim for some level fairness if people are putting in different levels of effort.

But yeah a few years back when I was in third year, I was going through a really shitty time and in a not great place mentally and my grades were taking a hit as a result. Had to do a group project and I kept dropping the ball/not delivering on my side of things A LOT, to the point where others ended up basically doing my part. I fully expected all my group mates to score me poorly in the survey but it turns out they didn't because my personal score was never adjusted from the score the project got. I never actually told them what was going on and they never asked me or got angry when I did let them down with my side of the project - I'm not sure if they just figured out that something was up or were just unbelievably nice girls who cut me some slack or whatever, but yeah they didn't bat an eyelid while we were working on the project and they didn't mark me low in personal assessments either. I took a similar approach to group projects after that - put in 100% because I want a good project mark, and score others well even if they weren't pulling their weight.

Though, I guess it's easier to do that when my mark won't necessarily be impacted by them not doing their part - as long as the work gets done and I do well, the project will get a good mark and I'll get a good personal score from others 🤷‍♀️

Yeah.. sometimes life proves the way we think might not necessarily be right in all cases.

I tried hard to be a good teacher the first time I taught, and my evaluation scores were not high. Their comments included I was a perfectionists now, 3 years have passed and I learnt the lesson (you always learn lessons when you teach), I got very good evaluation scores, thinking I taught very little (compared to the first term), and the students were more satisfied and they felt happy with the class (which is the ultimate goal of my language teaching).

I’ve heard that by assigning roles to students in each group, this should help prevent any slackers also. People slack when they know someone is gonna help them out or play their part anyway, so if everyone is their own role it might prevent free loaders.

Yeah life does do that hey! And also glad to hear that you've been able to fine-tune your method of teaching now and the kids are happy in class - that's the ultimate goal indeed.

I tutor on the side, and have slowly learnt to become less self conscious and more understanding with how I teach, but I'm always in awe of actual teachers like you because wow the dedication and effort it takes, not to mention the amazing impact you make on the next generation is incredible 💕 👏 We don't talk about how amazing teachers or how hard the job actually is!! Tutoring is like 1/10th of what a teacher does and I find that hard sometimes already so I can't imagine what it'd be like to be a full time teacher!

And yes great idea with role assigning - would be easier to keep people accountable too at the end because you know who was meant to be in charge of what!

My thanks go out to a Beanie (which one I can't remember) who had the brilliant idea to FF through the finale of MM and watch the last 8 minutes. WHEW! Now I can go about this day with a smile and the anticipation of a pleasant watch after the world goes to sleep.

I am also reeling over the news of Lee Sun Kyun. Heartbreaking, such a talented actor!! His wonderful voice. I loved him in Coffee Prince and My Mister. I feel awful for his wife and children!, friends, and colleagues.

Another Korean star caught up in scandal who should not have been vilified. It sounds like investigations have found no real evidence against LSK, just speculation. I have worried as well for Yoo Ah In, he was always busy with several projects, what is he doing now? Will he be able to return to acting? I don't know if there's a way to end Korean citizens' habit of attacking their idols over any small indication that they're not perfect, but I hope something changes someday soon. There is a lot to love about South Korean culture, this is one aspect I strongly dislike.

I agree with everything you said. Such a talented actor, wonderful in My Mister. Why did LSK have to go through unconfirmed accusations publicly? Doesn't he deserve privacy?
Even if accusations were true, why did the whole society turn so cruelly against someone they respected until a moment ago? Why their whole life, career and family has to be ruined? If they made a mistake, they should get all the help and support they need.
