Tell Me That You Love Me: Episodes 11-12

The secrets are pouring out this week — from the story behind our hero’s traumatic breakup to a birth secret I wasn’t expecting. With the art exhibition upon us our leads get down to working on their big career goals, but without missing out on all the small moments that make this drama so worth it.

EPISODES 11-12

We finally see how the breakup went down between Jin-woo and Seo-kyung in college and it’s enough to melt the coldest of hearts. All three actors that play Jin-woo throughout his life know how to transform their faces into epic heartbreak, but Baek Sung-chul’s pained stare in these flashback scenes turned me into a puddle.

So, the short story is that Seo-kyung breaks up with Jin-woo and flees the country because she feels miserable while he lives in a “peaceful, silent world.” According to her, he didn’t do anything wrong, it’s just that he can’t hear and that’s not going to change, so there’s no way to overcome their differences. Holy harsh, Seo-kyung.

Of course, we learn much later that she has other things going on but she’s just not saying it. A few episodes ago, we were introduced to the idea that someone might be following her around in college when she kept hearing this creepy whistling everywhere she went. Now we finally have some follow-up and learn that another art student was stalking her — and this crazy dude appears to be the one that set the fire she got trapped in.

Seo-kyung breaks up with Jin-woo right after the fire, but we still don’t know all the details about his role in trying to save her (or not) and how she escaped. The important part for now is that our hero was hit with a double trauma. There was the fire in which he felt helpless to save the lady he loved, and then he got dumped in the harshest way. All of this leads to the seven years he was off the grid, which Seo-kyung has just learned about.

We come back to the moment in the present where Seo-kyung stops Jin-woo after hours in the museum to apologize for leaving him alone back then. She wishes she stayed by his side. Jin-woo’s expression turns to subtle anger and he signs that it’s his problem, so she doesn’t have to feel bad anymore. Then he marches off to meet Mo-eun as she gets out of work.

The problem, though, is that Seo-kyung is the director of the art gallery and she’s orchestrating Jin-woo’s upcoming exhibition. This means they have to spend a bunch more time together. Things come to a head just before the opening when Jin-woo is taken into custody by the police for “property damage” – that is, they’ve discovered that he’s the mural artist called Dino, who’s going around painting on other people’s walls.

Seo-kyung follows Jin-woo to the police station to translate and, afterward, they have it out in the parking lot. She starts by saying that she already knew his secret identity and adds, “I was surprised that the painter I was looking for was you.” (Well that’s got a double meaning if I ever heard one.)

She asks about the seven years after the breakup, for which Jin-woo has no paintings. He doesn’t want to explain it to her and she says it broke her heart to find out he didn’t produce anything during that time. Then, Jin-woo is signing, but his angered facial expressions and sharp arm movements say that he is yelling. He tells her to stop apologizing and asking questions. “Stop making me remember all those past times!” He turns to leave — and Mo-eun is standing there watching the whole conversation.

This scene is a knockout. Both Jin-woo and Seo-kyung are so pained (for different reasons), but they’re choking it all back as they sign to each other. There are no words spoken aloud but every emotion comes across and the tension is sky high.

When Jin-woo tells Mo-eun that he’s the mural artist Dino, she asks about how he picked that name. We see a flashback to when he had just lost his hearing as a child, but was still in a school where all the other students could hear. When they had to introduce themselves to each other in front of the class, he tried to speak but couldn’t hear himself. The other kids thought he said his name was Cha Dino, and they ridiculed and teased him mercilessly. Now, he’s retaken the name. (My god, my heart shattered for this kid. And it doesn’t make it any easier that the young actor, Kim Ji-hoon, might be the most adorable child on the planet.)

Jin-woo’s exhibition is a success and the art part goes off without a hitch. The problems arise when Seo-kyung’s stalker shows up and Mo-eun hears all about Seo-kyung’s past and her lingering feelings for Jin-woo.

First, there’s a famous artist, KWON DO-HUN (Park Ki-deok), that’s been hanging around for many episodes and acting as an antagonist to Jin-woo. He’s mostly been filling in exposition about Jin-woo’s college years, but this time, we see the role he played in it all. Do-hun approaches Seo-kyung at the gallery and starts raving about stalking her and setting fire to the university building — and then demands to know if Seo-kyung still has feelings for Jin-woo.

All of this Mo-eun overhears while she’s cuddled up with Jin-woo on a bench outside the gallery. He obviously has no idea what’s happening, and this leads to a very strange dynamic between our leads. Jin-woo can tell something is wrong with Mo-eun, but Mo-eun doesn’t want to tell him what she’s heard.

Later, Mo-eun describes what she’s feeling to Ji-yoo and it’s not just that she feels insecure, but that she feels lonely, since they don’t share the same world even when they’re in the same space. She says that she always thought Jin-woo could be lonely because he can’t hear, but she realized that she could be lonely too because she could.

The part that rings loudly throughout this conversation is that it’s a callback to what Seo-kyung said to Jin-woo when she broke up with him. Both women heard things that disturbed them — things that Jin-woo can’t hear — and it creates a barrier between them (which explains why Seo-kyung would call his world “peaceful”).

This internal conflict in Mo-eun is worrisome because it looks like she might be second-guessing the relationship. There’s a scene where she imagines what it would be like if she and Jin-woo could talk and laugh easily together if he could hear.

Near the close of the episodes there’s another worrisome sign when she and Jin-woo are discussing the link between strong memories and scents. They’re in the room where he teaches and she smells a strong odor of paint, and then she writes, “Someday, somewhere, when I’m alone and smell paint, I’ll remember this moment.” Now, that could be another very cute moment between these two (among many) or it could be a way of saying goodbye.

I don’t want to be pessimistic, but the context of these episodes is all about memory. Specifically, it’s about how happy moments end up being painful when you look back on them in the past. Mo-eun begins Episode 12 by talking about how we smile in front of a camera, only to look back on the photos with remorse later. And I hope her moments with Jin-woo won’t become one of those painful memories in the future.

Also, all this talk about happy photos is how we learn that Mo-eun’s mom is not her birth mom! She learned the secret as a child, but her parents don’t know she knows. I’m not totally sure what this means for the larger story, except that Mo-eun has some solid motivation for feeling insecure about love (even though the mom that raised her clearly loves her).

Mo-eun’s insecurity about Seo-kyung and Jin-woo reaches its apex as our episodes end this week. First, we see Seo-kyung confessing to Jin-woo after his exhibition. She says she learned two things while they worked together: 1) he’s a great artist and 2) she’s the perfect partner for him. *Gasp* What’s with all her crazy confidence?

Second, after wallowing in self-pity at Ki-hyun’s bar, Seo-kyung waltzes over to Jin-woo’s house in the pouring rain one night. As you can guess, it’s just as Mo-eun is arriving to see it. Mo-eun is at a distance and no one notices her, but she sees Jin-woo’s door open as Seo-kyung steps inside. Oh brother. This is where we’ll be picking up next week.

Poor Mo-eun! She looks crushed. And who could blame her? She’s totally in love and she’s just heard that Seo-kyung still has feelings for the man she’s endlessly confessing to (there’s a lovely moment when Jin-woo is washing dishes and Mo-eun walks up behind him and writes “I love you” on his back with her finger. Gah. It’s really sweet). And now he’s opening the door for his ex on a rainy night?! Grr.

I continue to love this drama for how well it captures the small moments. There’s so much nuance in day-to-day activities and when our artsy leads are in the same space just practicing their crafts — near one another but separately — I could watch it all day. What I like less are the not-at-all subtle story moments, like the fact that Seo-kyung had a stalker and then broke up with Jin-woo, but it’s not clear if Jin-woo ever knew about the stalker. I know all these details are yet to be revealed, but if Seo-kyung left without filling him in, I will be questioning both her character and the writing.

As we kick into gear for the final weeks, I’m hoping for less high drama and more quiet moments. Less Ji-yoo and Mo-dam (who are now officially dating) and more of the adorable high school romance that’s taking off in Jin-woo’s art class. And a less confident Seo-kyung, so we can have a more confident Mo-eun. And definitely, definitely I don’t want any sad memories of once-happy moments for our leads.

I need some time to process all this. I'm still trying to absorb all this information.

Antagonist guy has always been on my radar as a bad guy. The stalker? Yes. But the one who set the fire? That is something i didn't expect at all, especially the way he was acting all like it was entirely Jin-woo's fault.

Tbh, based on what we heard from their conversation that ME also heard, I think there should be more information about both the stalking and the fire setting. I think we only know part of the whole truth.

Thank you dramaddicttally for your wonderful recap.
Such beautiful episodes.
All the actors are doing a fabulous job.
I could watch college Jin woo in a spin off show of his own. I first came across Baek Sung Chul in Inspector Koo and he was great, there is something really compelling about him.
I fear the angst and turmoil are headed our way in the next episodes but really hope I am wrong. One of the best things about this show so far has been the excellent communication between our leads.
I would like to see the unrestrained Jin woo for once and his honest, bottled up feelings about Seo-kyung layed out in the open as he always holds himself back with everyone. She is being extremely selfish right now with her behaviour.
I don't think we needed the stalker plot added in. This show really excels in the simple, everyday moments and there is enough melodrama with everyday life.
I too am a fan of the adorable school romance happening in Jin woo's classroom. It's lovely to watch.
I'm so sad we only have four more episodes with these characters.

Yes. I also agree that I can watch the college Jin Woo and SK's spin off (in a parallel universe) because they are just adorable together as a couple! The scenes with them are sweet, and it's a joy to watch anything and everything they do together in their day-to-day life. Kudos to both actor and actress portraying the college JW and SK. The actor is excellent at acting, and so is the actress. I am especially impressed by the fast signing of the actress I wonder if she had known the language before as she seems to be most at ease with it (signing with speed).

This drama has been my happy place for the last weeks. Everything that came up between our leads was toned down quickly and dealt with, and we had so many lovely scenes to watch between them.
I can't quite stomach that the drama has been dialled up not only one notch now, but I'm still not sure how the dice will fall. Yes, Seokyung has (delusionally?) stated that she's Jin Woo's "perfect partner", but we haven't seen his reaction to that yet. He sat with a somewhat stony face there before so I can't imagine he's rolling with that.
I hope Ki Hyun's voice of reason comes through! He's the one talking some sense into everybody - reminding and explaining Mo Eun how long a way Jin Woo has come to be with her, and that he's very unlikely to waver now. And reprimanding Seokyung about her underlying reasons for approaching Jin Woo and telling her to go no further and to stop. And before, telling Jin Woo that he has to give a little, too. Ki Hyun is the Greek chorus of this drama and my personal hero! Besides our obvious one.
I want to have hope that the potentially destroying elements will be dealt with in this drama's toned down style, but with our last scene this week I have a sinking feeling that my happy place is turning into something else. And I'm very inclined to sit next week's episodes put and see what will be reported here first. Thank you for your quick recap, though! It confirmed my own thoughts about these episodes.

Ki-hyun is such a miracle. He is the glue joining both JW and ME. He has been a great friend to JW all those years. I especially like the fact that he talk SENSE into everybody around him. Not only that, he shows how a hearing-impaired and a hearing person can live a wonderful life together. There is little to no misunderstanding between them because they are willing to work to understand the other.

I really want the past to be resolved now to actually see every character finding peace and happiness. I'm curious about the stalker, because he looks too much angry against both of them to be someone who stalked and put them in danger...

I think Seo-kyung was right they form a good partnership at work. She understands his art like nobody else and she can communicate with him easily.

I don't think Moeun's secret birth makes sense about her feeling insecure about love. She doesn't know why and she received a lot of love. She's not treated differently.

I think it's normal she has doubts and difficulties to date a deaf person and I'm happy they addressed it because they both need adaptation and I'm still optimistic for their future. There are up and down in every relationship.

So when will they release the opening song? >_<

Thanks for sharing. I am not particularly good with paintings (I just think some of them are pretty and that's all) but these pictures I saw on their Instagram made me look at them for minutes. That is something. There is something soothing about how this artist paints which goes hand in hand with the character Cha Jin-woo.

So 7 years off the grid after college, after that how many years have passed till this present time we see? The characters seem in their forties so how can SK just come back to Korea after 7 years as per story. None of them look like 28 29 year olds ie 7 , 8 years after college ...s and ma like a good 18 20 year gap...what is going on..

Ah non - "And a less confident Seo-kyung, so we can have a more confident Mo-eun"

Let moeun find her own footing independent of SK. It's nice to see a character like SK for once, smart beautiful, talented and successful. Both the actresses' play her well , esp with sign language. She's herself and let her own her mistakes without losing her confidence , her essence. Why should sh be written like that. Is the drama writer a woman? Haven't checked this.
I look forward to SKs scenes, watched till ep 8, she's owns her space rightfully and even when she's afraid hesitant it's not for anyone to see, and that's fine.
Let SK be , and let's hope the drama doesn't wilt her character unneedly once the melo soars in the last episodes.

I also like SK character. I think this is deep writing as her character, as well as most other characters in the show, are very 3-dimensional. I do agree with Dramaddictally that she comes across for many viewers as being selfish, but I think that adds to the character's charm. I will 100% cheer for the OTP, but I do agree that I like SK character, too.

The editor that does the preview epilogue for each episode is choosing story bites in the standard way- making it seem like the next part of the story will be dramatic and tension filled. But every time we think there will be a conflict " next week" it does not happen. Fires are escaped from, people return from the police station, and strange whistling stalkers appear to have a face and a name. (Why doesn't he have a restraining order on him? How is an arsonist a successful artist?) So I expect the director to continue with his calm clear tone. Angst will happen slowly, with gentle music, and time for reflection. My only question is, Who is ringing Mo-eun's phone at the end? My best guess is that Ki-hyun knows that Seo-kyung is being strange (because of the bar scene) and is ringing to give Mo-eun that heads up so she can intervene before SK is too strange to JW and distresses him.

If she goes and sits in the car with Johan, there is a possibility of conflict or angst, and I don't think the story/the director wants to take us very far down that road. That is why I thought it might be the friend who owns the bar checking in on her because SK was talking a bit crazy to him. It could be a call from Johan that she ends quickly though. I also like welh's theory below that it is the last exhibition visitor/probably the birth mother, but the visitor asked Mo eun to call her, not the other way around, so I think that story needs a bit longer to develop

I also think it's a call from JH checking in on her. He is worried if the ML is at home at the time.

In these eps, I feel so sorry for JH. He is such a great friend, and the way he looks longingly at the FL melts my heart every time. He is there, but he also has to keep his feelings a secret from the FL as they might tear their relationship.

I was always impressed by how Mo-eun and Jin-woo managed to communicate so well despite the language barrier. It is now sad to see how Mo-eun's insecurities open up a rift. She should listen to the advice of Jin-woo's friend (in his always empty bar - how does he make a living?)

The direction is done extremely well, showing the new couple spending hours on the phone chatting about sweet nothings, something Mo-eun cannot, but surely would like to do. It is interesting to see deafness pictured as a safe haven from ugly gossip, noise and other negative things, I had never thought of it this way.

Love this drama!

Yes, I feel impressed, too.

One impactful scene for me is when the students in JW's class talk to each other. The girl said she didn't want to hear anything in particular since she had never heard anything before. When one doesn't have something from the start, it is possible that one will not want it. It's so simple, but also impactful.

I want Mo Eun to talk to him, the man is always willing to listen. He clearly adores her, but I guess insecurity is going to insecure. He wasn't going to leave Seo Kyung out in the rain, looking like a sick puppy, so that is normal. Mo Eun needs to woman up and go see her man. The only misunderstandings should be the language barrier.

We learn that SK broke up with JW not because she hated or resented him (he is the ultimate nice guy) but because she finally understood why her mother left her deaf father: JW deafness would never change and she could never overcome their differences. You would think that SK caring for her dad her entire life, and becoming a student translator would have made her more aware of the situation. But in the end, she wanted to live a “normal” life with a normal guy. This really foreshadows the issues that naive ME may not be able to overcome as their relationship moves forward. JW has the bad memory that even if he does nothing wrong, his deafness is a relationship killer.

It was unnerving to see JW get angry at SK for continuing bringing up his 7 years in isolation but it was totally justified. He does not want to be reminded of their past while she is still trying to process her guilt she has for abandoning him.

Telepathically the show answered what I thought his mural name “Dino” meant to JW. He said it was nothing special. But it was what the school children called him because he could not speak “Jinwoo” clearly. It was a haunting memory of being isolated and weak. It shows that despite his stoic presence, JW is a very sentimental and sensitive person.

Jiyu and Modam’s dating started off uber-cute. I don’t know if her personality shift to aegyo can sustain itself.

I thought their new projects would lessen time together, but having ME practice guitar while JW paints for his exhibition was a great scene as it showed that a couple can be happy together even in silence while doing their own thing (something that older, stable couples do.)

Artist Kwon was the “art student stalker?” Someone gossiping that they they never thought she would have seen the three (JW, SK and Kwon) together again. Kwon blames SK for re-fueling the past scandal between college friends. Kwon set the building fire while stalking SK so how can he blame SK for JW’s exhibition? He asks SK bluntly does she still like him? or pity him? or will use him for her career advancement? All reasonable questions but for a famous artist, why the jealousy, why should he even care? (The fire and JW’s inability to help her may be part of the cause why SK broke up with him - - - realizing he could never protect her?) It sets the idea of her return just for closure into a fierce, unwanted love triangle trope. Please, show don’t go down the cliche path at this point.

After overhearing SK and Kwon’s conversation, ME realizes that she and JW cannot share moments together because he cannot hear. ME would have to relay the moment to him by sign or text, but she knows that is difficult and not intimate. Can she be happy giving him second hand news accounts of their experiences? Perhaps, that is the differences SK eluded to when she broke up with JW (even though she may regret it now.) ME dreams of her and JW talking and laughing like a normal couple - - a dream that could never...

... become a reality. It is a different kind of loneliness. She is comforted by bar owner who calms her insecurities about JW and SK. But she is still not sure. And her intuition is right when SK tells JW she is his perfect partner (not just business is inferred.)

The step-mother secret was used to show ME’s doubts and worries about whether her step-mom truly loves her like her own child parallel JW’s similar doubts whether any woman can truly love him like a normal man. “There are secrets you cannot tell because you love them.”

The other story about secrets is about student Hyun-Jin wearing earbuds in public so people will not talk to her. It is a way of keeping secret her deafness. “Those who have never heard anything do not have a desire to hear something.” It seems very individual-specific but it really is a universal truth: a person who does not swim may not desire to go to the sea; a person afraid of heights would not want to walk across a tall bridge.

The open secret of the four students starting romantic relationships is also universal. The new, different kid getting to know Hyun Jin, while as friends Si-Hoo has a hard time starting one with Ki-Joo.

The last visitor to the exhibition appears to be JW’s birth mother, another deep secret. She cries because of the loneliness depicted in most of JW’s paintings. ME getting used to the smell of paint in the studio and JW’s home is symbolic of her getting comfortable with JW. Memories linked to smells last a long time (JW with SK and the fire); ME with JW and paint smell).

Johan is more secretive about his feelings for ME but gives her hints with their memories and his music like the drama’s love song secret confession. But it is lost on ME who only wants to get back to JW.

KH gives brutally direct assessment to SK that the problem is not JW’s past hurt feelings but SK herself. KH knows that JW had a nightmarish time after his break up, but he also knows that JW finally overcame his lonely shell by being with ME - - - something he does not want his friend to lose if SK tries to reverse back irreversible memories. The sad cliffhanger is ME in the rain, the rain that should wash away all the dirt and grime, staring at SK looking like a pathetic wet cat walking into JW’s house.

The ringing phone is not from JW. I propose it was from the last exhibition visitor, opening the biggest secret in JW’s life, his mother.

Subtle and complex writing in these episodes. Secrecy and insecurity are intertwined with transparency and painful feelings. People think memories are good time capsules of the past but they can be dangerous land mines in the present. Very well done.

Hmmm...for a while now I'm not so sure about the exclusivity of the here shown problems between a "mixed" couple. Most of these are issues between hearing couples or people in general, like when Mo-Eun hears the conversation between SK and the stalker artist - yes, Jin Woo was there at the time and couldn't hear this, but her problem about how and if to relay what she heard to him would be the same if she would have heard it without him present.
Earlier on before they get to be a couple Jin Woo says they haven't got a language that both can "speak", but that's not true - both can express themselves through writing / reading (I had to deal with a few hearing impaired people professionally and can say from experience that this is not an option for everyone!).
Misunderstandings happen in hearing couples and between hearing people, too.
And I am afraid of heights, but I really would like to be able to climb a high tower for the sight or cross a tall bridge! 😉 I think the distinction is more between people who know or had the experience already and people who have never known, in this instance, never heard anything. You won't miss what you don't know unless you learn it can be something to desire.
The question for Mo Eun is: can she really live a long-term relationship without actually speaking / talking / laughing about spoken words, or can't she? The rest is, in my eyes, solvable. You'll always have to deal with misunderstandings, with stretches of lesser exchange in a relationship and with the question what to relay to a person what you've heard somewhere else.
But that comes from a person who prefers texting over calling and silence over noises although I'm not hearing impaired.

My opinion-SK broke up with JW because she was being stalked. And SK could hear things related to the stalking ( the whistling, the fire) and JW could not. Which is why she said she was 'living in hell' while he was 'living in peaceful silence' SK needed to get away from the stalking, so she left. And failed to explain all of this to JW. (But if I am right, why didnt they go overseas together like they planned? Maybe that would have taken to long for her, as she was having a breakdown and needed to leave immediately)
The step-mother secret was also used as a way for Johan to continue to process his emotions- 'some secrets you don't tell the people you love' Mo-eun does not need to discuss the birth-mom secret with her mom, Johan should not/does not need to discuss the fact that he is in love with Mo-eun with her
"Subtle and complex writing in these episodes" I agree, it is well done

This was Seo Kyung's week for me.

Just like Ki Hyun, I get frustrated, tell Seo Kyung to stop messing with Jin Woo, etc. She needs to stop. We can say it. We all agree on that.
But I just can't stop thinking how there's no one that would do the same for her. Not even herself.

There's no one to tell us about Seo Kyung's nightmares after the break up, if she looked like a corpse, or if she spent seven years in a mountain painting. There's no one to tell her story. And there's also no one to tell her the words she needs to hear. Or give her the comfort she needs to heal.

We've seen Jin Woo having nightmares about the fire, but we also saw Seo Kyung "hearing" the whistle.

I just feel bad because there's no one to tell something not from the "all the pain you caused Jin Woo" POV, but from the "all the pain that you've been carrying" POV. She already knows what she needs to do about Jin Woo, in her head. But that doesn't matter rn because her heart isn't ready to take that step.

The pain that someone caused to her, the pain that she caused to someone else (guilt), the memories of the life she had before, and all the regret of the decisions she made, are eating her alive.
She came back to Korea to work with the two walking reminders of her past... I just want to give her a hug.

I don't care about the rest, I just want her to have a happy ending. I'm so worried about her tbh.

2. Jo Han did the soundtrack for this drama, didn't he? He's good. I would hire him for my show.
Jokes aside, he almost made me cry. The way the song described exactly his situation in that moment, could've been funny in another time or maybe another show. But after all these weeks of Jo Han trying to protect his relationship with Mo Eun, trying to protect her feelings, it just made sad.

I can see all that. And I can see how it hurts and pains her. But...in my view: if she really came back to Korea to find closure or to unclutter her past - which I can totally understand -, she shouldn't have approached her (ex?-) stalker and her Ex without notice or any form of announcement. If I would find myself in her mindspace, thinking about such a big step because I'm haunted by what has happened years ago and ready to insert myself into and change my own life and the lives of others...what I really should do then is seek professional help.
But I guess that's not an option in dramaland.

But that's her character, how she is :) which is a bat makes this so interesting. There could be many ways to handle this but one is SK. Doesnt make sense to get ahead of how a character is written unless it's kdrama extreme makjang which this isn't. Even then makjang becomes the reason.
I like the way she's portrayed, no holds barred with the people close to her, even with the bad guy...she's processing berr pain by facing it and taking in the consequences, again rising up. Of course her path may be intrusive to the outsider but for her these are the guys she was extremely close with, she's still stuck in that world, hence she makes the moves she does...they might teach her , later, that it isn't always like this, as the friend at the bar tells her. Maybe she'll burn n learn by e16.

That song confession was beautiful, how gutting you finally confess, she hears it and then runs to another man’s arms.

When you put it like that, I really feel bad for JH.

But I love the song!

You described my feelings exactly. The reason I emphasize with SK is that while we know what has been going on mostly with the ML, we only see a fraction of SK's life and her struggles. She seems to have her ducks in a roll now, but does she really? and what has she gone through. I also hope for her a happy ending and closure to all her nightmares. She really deserves them. She owes one to JW, too; but with clear, brave, and honest communication, I believe the ML will understand and set both of them free of all the emotions that have been eating them alive.

And yes to our dear JH. Who could have been a better friend than him? He has feelings for the FL, and he is trying to support his friend's love and hides his. Those eyes pining for the FL when she doesn't see them hurt my heart. The actor is so brilliant. I think this character really grew on me. The way he writes the song, lets her listen to it, and goes outside the room with tears in his eyes is just beautifully heartbreaking.

Thanks @dramaddictally for the weecap.
I am so glad I am finally caught up. I agree the second female lead storyline needs to be moved on quickly as it is not a necessary part in this style of drama. I also want the fire story presented fully so we know the context for all the nightmares.

The students are a real joy so I hope we see more of them.

Johan’s confession was so beautiful, I don’t know how he kept himself composed dropping her off at her boyfriend’s. I loved that he took her to her parents for a recharge. He has fallen prey to the close proximity leads to love syndrome seen in a few dramas now where the girls accept the sister/brother relationship from day one and rarely change but the boys hold on to their romantic love into adulthood.

Come to think of it, isn't this kind of phenomenon strange? I think I've seen my guy friends fall for their close female friends a number of times, but not the other way round. Any explanation for this???

Thank you, @dramaddictally, for the lovely weecap.

I am late to the party, but I have a good reason for it.

Anyway, I just finished watching ep 12 and reading your weecap. I don't really know what else to write because watching this show is like watching an unfolding painting for me- too beautiful to be distracted, and too good to notice any specific things in it. I was watching the show awestruck. It's just so good. So peaceful, even when there is angst, and so soothing.

I have to be honest that the recent incident in SK had made me almost cancel the whole country, culture, and their (mostly) entertainment work. I could not watch anything in the first half of this month because I felt detached knowing dramas might be the much the better versions of the society, but this show brings me back. It isn't makjang-ish, and it is such delicate work. You can tell how much thoughts and effort have been put into the project, and I just can't ignore a good piece of art.

I look forward to watching the rest.

I agree it’s hard watching K-dramas at the moment. There was a comment about an actress in another post and when I looked up her life I was really questioning how I could do something that would make a difference. The industry is toxic and the justice system was gaslighting her on another level. One person will not change the system but a mass movement will so I hope that the mass movement can come into play soon as too many people have been effected for far too long.

There is one comment I read on YT that I still remember until this moment - SK excels in every aspect except kindness. I agree with that.

I was thinking we don’t know the lived experience as we only see the media portrayal but the air time given to toxic behaviour and power games plays a significant part in reinforcing the behaviour no one wants to see.

Yes, I think so, too. I understand that people find pleasure in different things, but a teacher in me feels that regular exposure to violence desensitizes people; they will begin to think it's more and more normal at some point. I think being moderate is the key, but perhaps that doesn't work with the entertainment industry.
