Big: Episode 8

There are twists and turns and major decisions, some of which I wish we didn’t decide so hastily. We also start to unravel Kyung-joon’s backstory and the mystery of Yoon-jae and Kyung-joon’s connection. The way that’s being teased (one excrutiatingly teensy drop at a time), I certainly hope it amounts to something worth waiting for, that subverts our expectations. Please?

EPISODE 8 RECAP

Kyung-joon proposes with Yoon-jae’s ring… and says that as long as she wears it, he will never love her. He tells her to take the bait – this time it’s Yoon-jae – and bite now if she doesn’t want to lose him.

At the same time, Choong-shik tells Mari about the marriage-or-nothing condition given by Dad, which is still ludicrous, given that their problem was that they rushed into marriage, so maybe dating is the better thing? But nobody listens to me. Mari runs off to stop it.

Da-ran looks down at the ring, more confused than ever. Did Yoon-jae want to marry her after all? She asks what’ll happen to Kyung-joon if they get married, and he says that it’s not real for him, and he doesn’t think it’s a bad solution to growing up and becoming an adult.

Is anyone else screaming MISTAAAAAKE? I’m torn, because I get that fake marriage means fake marriage hijinks, but I worry for Kyung-joon’s heart. Besides the fact that for Da-ran and Yoon-jae, it’s just plain ol’ crazy.

She contemplates the decision, but there’s little time for quiet reflection when Mari comes whirling in, declaring that this sham of a wedding cannot happen. Am I nodding my head along with Mari, of all people? To that end, she’ll just tell Da-ran’s parents the truth—the REAL truth. She takes off running.

Kyung-joon freaks out and runs after her, and then Da-ran chases him. Choong-shik arrives at the house just in time to see them each run out one after the other, and then he takes up the caboose.

Mari tells Mom and Dad that she’s got big news, but Kyung-joon gets there fast enough to cut in. They turn their attention to Seo-suh-bang, of course, demanding that he only appear when he’s ready to marry their daughter.

But when Da-ran arrives, everyone sees the ring, and they realize the proposal has been made. Kyung-joon quickly says that he did propose, but he’s awaiting Da-ran’s answer, so it’s not a done deal.

Kyung-joon drags Mari back to his house, and she warns him that if he goes through with the marriage, she’ll blow the lid for real next time. He argues that she’s just a kid and if an adult says she’s lying, that’ll be the end of it.

She counters that when a kid whines relentlessly, adults can never win. She reminds him of their parents—because of her, they didn’t marry after all, right? Kyung-joon: “And what happened to my mom because of that?” Ouch. He leaves her reeling.

Da-ran stays up that night, pondering the ring over a can of beer. She imagines what Awake Yoon-jae would say if he woke up a married man. Scenario 1: He smiles winningly, thanks her for her smart real estate choices, presents her with flowers as the family cheers and confetti comes from nowhere. Cute.

But then she realizes that it could easily go the other way. Scenario 2: He glowers, Se-young sidles up to him, and they present her with divorce papers as they smile. Da-ran shakes her head in confusion – which one is it?

Well I’d argue that even if he had every intention of marrying you, he’d want to, oh I dunno… choose to marry you, or remember walking you down the aisle? And that’s even in the best-case scenario, in my brain.

Mom sees her worrying over her decision, and tells her not to be swept along by Yoon-jae like she was before (THANK YOU, MOM). She asks Da-ran to follow her own heart this time—don’t think about what Yoon-jae feels, but ask yourself what YOU feel. With a mom like this, how did you turn out like that?

She’s left asking herself what her feelings for Yoon-jae are now. But her thoughts go to Kyung-joon, as she remembers him saying that he’d never ever love her.

Mari asks Choong-shik how much Gil Teacher loves Seo Yoon-jae. Choong-shik says that his sister would wait alllll day for a phone call from Yoon-jae, and was pretty pathetic, if that’s an indication of how much. That puts Mari at ease—she won’t have to worry about Teacher as competition then.

Choong-shik takes that opportunity to ask Mari: “How much do you like me?” He knows that she likes Kyung-joon, but they’ve accumulated affection, over pizzas and the like, right? So… if Kyung-joon is 100 points, how many does she like Choong-shik? Thirty? Twenty? He meekly adds that even ten is cool…

Mari ponders it. Choong-shik holds his breath. Mari: “Zero!” (bbang = zero, also the sound of shooting a gun).

She points a finger gun right to his heart, “Bbang, bbang, bbang!” Poor kitten. He ends up a lifeless carcass on the couch, still holding a hand to his broken heart.

Kyung-joon sits with his colleagues in the hospital cafeteria, (I’m still confused as to how this kid is playing doctor on a daily basis.) bored by the mundane conversation. He looks over at the next table and sighs heartbreakingly at three teenage boys laughing and horsing around.

This, I love—when he was eighteen, he just wanted to hurry and grow up quickly as we all do, but now that he’s experienced adulthood, he misses acting his own age. It’s why old people always say things like “youth is wasted on the young.”

He hides out in the pediatric ward again (I guess it’s a good thing Yoon-jae is actually a pediatrician) and despite his outward dislike for children, he’s already developed a cute rapport with them, calling them by their nicknames Bunny and Teddy Bear. Around them, he doesn’t pretend to be an adult.

Da-ran meets with Se-young to ask her how far her relationship with Yoon-jae went. Se-young scoffs and without flinching, says that they slept together. Da-ran calls her bluff, and Se-young wonders if she’s found some new confidence, because she had such an inferiority complex before.

Da-ran says this time around she does feel confident, and she’s going to go where her heart tells her to. She asks again about whether or not they were cheaty cheatersons, but Se-young refuses to give her the satisfaction of knowing, and lords it over her: “I’ll never tell you.” Well… did you really expect the Hateful One to be helpful?

She heads over to Kyung-joon’s and watches him as he waters the lawn. His smile sends her heart skipping a beat, and she puts her hand over her heart as she tries to suss it out. Is she wondering what I’m wondering? Is that heart jumping for the soul or the shell?

He makes it rain for her by spraying water over the patio umbrella, and then they take turns sitting in the rain. It devolves into a water fight, of course, as they run around the yard screaming and laughing and getting soaked.

Inside, they do damage control over the wet contents of Da-ran’s purse, and then she discovers that the ring is missing. You… weren’t wearing it? That’s telling.

They go outside to look for it on the lawn, but after a cursory look, she says they should forget about it—if it’s lost, it’s lost. He looks at her quizzically. That’s telling too. Did she WANT to lose it?

He asks her as much—is she happier now that it’s lost, and it does the deciding for her? She doesn’t argue the point, saying that things were clear before, and that ring just turned everything upside-down.

She’s happy to let the ring’s disappearance be the answer. But Kyung-joon calls her a coward for not facing the thing she’s really afraid of—sticking it out with Yoon-jae until she can be sure whether or not he loved her. He calls her out for being too scared to find out the truth.

She argues that she can’t just marry Yoon-jae one-sidedly – that’s not an adult thing to do. But Kyung-joon counters that the real adult thing would be to wait it out, get rejected, and THEN give up, not any time before. “Like I did.” Aw.

Da-ran says he’s right, and she’s not a grown-up, so he should stop leaning on her then. She storms out and he screams after her that he’s just going to marry whichever girl Yoon-jae’s mom shoves in his line of sight then, and she’ll have lost her chance.

They each sigh, angry and all turned around.

Mari asks Choong-shik about his sister, and he says that she still hasn’t made her decision. She gets up to leave, and he starts in on this really cool speech about setting up shop in her heart and waiting as long as it takes to earn that first point…

…which Mom interrupts by asking him to take out the trash that she found under his bed. Porn alarm! His eyes go wide and he races to sit on the evidence before Mari sees it, but the damage has been done.

He screams at Mom that he hates her, even though she’s pretty much the coolest mom ever—her complaint isn’t the porn, but the clutter. Ha. But later that night, Choong-shik gets dressed in all black and kidnaps his piggybank with a hand over its mouth. In case he squeals?

Should I even be asking why he’s dressed for Mission Impossible if he’s running away from home?

Meanwhile, Kyung-joon stays up late reading his textbooks, and scowls at the very important file for school that Da-ran left behind in her haste. He tells imaginary Da-ran that it’ll serve her right to get into a crapload of trouble with the vice principal.

Cut to: Kyung-joon with said file in front of the mandoo restaurant. Hee.

He peers in the window, and sees the whole family pacing in worry, after discovering that Choong-shik has run away. Da-ran hesitates with her phone, realizing that she could call Kyung-joon who could call Mari, whose calls Choong-shik would answer… but she stops short.

Suddenly, someone zooms past Kyung-joon into the restaurant. It’s Na Teacher, who races to the rescue to start the search for Choong-shik. Kyung-joon wonders why he was called, and then sighs that she should make it work with him then, and turns to go.

But Mom comes out and finds him there, impressed that he came running over because he was worried about Choong-shik. He’s like, yup, yup, totally why I’m here.

He gets brought in, and immediately the search for Choong-shik devolves into a suh-bang war. Dad’s on Team P.E., while Mom’s on Team Doctor, and Da-ran gets foisted on one after the other.

The two men eye each other up and down warily, each posturing that they’ll be the one to find Choong-shik first. Pfft. This is hilarious. Suddenly which team Da-ran goes with is a Big Decision.

Kyung-joon heads out first, calling Mari into action. (He adds for her to not take P.E.’s calls, heh.) Da-ran comes out with Na Teacher, and Kyung-joon refuses to share information since she’s on the other team. So petty.

But she tells Na Teacher that she’s going to join the other team after all, and comes back to Kyung-joon. So while Team P.E. goes the CSI route (epically, I might add), Team Doctor just sits back and waits for Mari to work her magic.

Da-ran asks how he can be so calm and do nothing, but he counters that all they have to do is wait for Mari’s call. She accuses him of not understanding since he’s never rebelled. He says she’s wrong, and Da-ran scoffs, “What, did you say you were going to Harvard instead of Seoul University?” Okay, that’s pretty funny.

But judging from his stoic reaction, she realizes that he really must’ve had quite the rebellious episode. Mari calls, her face twisting when she hears Da-ran’s voice answer Kyung-joon’s phone.

She purposely separates them, sending Da-ran to the train station and asking Kyung-joon to come to the jjimjilbang. That’s where Choong-shik is, of course, and Kyung-joon finds him right away.

Choong-shik swears he’s never going back home and he doesn’t care if he never sees Mom again. But Kyung-joon tells him his own story (couched as a second-hand Kyung-joon story, natch) – he rebelled once and then his mom died.

He had said the same thing, thinking he wouldn’t care if he never saw Mom again… and yet never once actually thought it would come true. Sweet little Choong-shik immediately asks, “Is my mom okay?”

Kyung-joon advises Choong-shik to rebel often and in little spurts, not to keep it in and let it blow up like this. That’s actually really good advice. He offers to help Choong-shik negotiate the terms of his return, if that’ll help him salvage some pride.

But they’re interrupted by Mari, who thinks it’ll be fun to spend the night there. Choong-shik lights up to realize she’s been looking for him.

Kyung-joon asks after Da-ran, thinking that she went to a jjimjilbang near the train station, but Mari corrects him—she sent her to the underground train station, where homeless people spend the night.

Both boys gape, you sent her where?

Da-ran wanders the train station, calling out Choong-shik’s name. Her fear grows, but she just keeps going, until drunk men surround her on either side. Someone grabs her and she lets out a scream… but it’s Kyung-joon.

He yells, “Are you crazy? How could you come to a place like this alone?!” Her voice shakes as she insists she’s fine and asks why he’s getting mad at her. Because he’s worried!

They linger for a moment, until Choong-shik runs up. Da-ran hits him, breaking down in tears, and Kyung-joon leaves them behind. Mari watches all this with a heavy heart, and Kyung-joon pointedly walks past her like she’s invisible, angry for her stunt.

Da-ran brings Choong-shik home, and Dad growls at him, while Mom just grabs him in a teary hug. Choong-shik just ekes out a “Mom” that kind of kills me.

Dad is surprised to hear that Seo-suh-bang found Choong-shik after all, and asks to see him. It’s not open arms, but it’s tacit approval. But I’m just wondering if anyone remembered to call Team P.E., or if he’s still out there sniffing leftover ramyun in the street.

Da-ran comes out to find Mari in tears, worried that Kyung-joon is mad at her again for lying. She confesses that Kyung-joon doesn’t like her because his mom died because of her.

Flashback to the night that Mari’s dad was planning to propose to Kyung-joon’s mom. She had hatched a plan to lie to Dad and play sick, to keep the proposal from happening. She told Kyung-joon to keep his mom from coming over.

But she tells Da-ran that the same night, his mom was shot and she died… which would never have happened if Mari hadn’t stopped her father.

Da-ran comes to see Kyung-joon, who’s thinking about that same night. Return to his side of the flashback, when Mom tells him that she has a date, but he tells her not to go—”If you do, I’ll never see you again.” Aw, so he really blames himself.

Mom agrees not to go, and then later that night, Mom and son leave the restaurant… and Mom gets shot in the alley, right in front of his eyes. Her blood splatters all over him and pours out from her wound as he stands there, shocked.

Back in the present he explains absently to Da-ran that he didn’t want Mom going to someone else. (So for Mari it was her love for Kyung-joon, but for Kyung-joon it was his dislike for the idea that Mom would remarry.)

He says that he threw a tantrum like a little baby, and then Mom died and he never saw her again. Da-ran just quietly puts her arms around him, “It’s not your fault. You were just being like Choong-shik. It wasn’t because of you.” I love everything about that moment.

The next day, Mom and Dad have lunch with Na Teacher to thank him for his help with Choong-shik, and Ae-kyung and even the vice principal tag along. It turns out that the VP is one of Dad’s old colleagues… which means she’s ALSO Mom’s high school teacher. HA. Okay, that’s not weird or anything.

At the same time, Kyung-joon’s uncle comes back hoping that Mom will recognize him, and wonders if it’s because of his mustache that she can’t. He watches with his finger over his lip, but his face falls as he watches Mom and Dad fawn over each other like the happy couple that they are.

Uncle and the VP lock eyes and then recognize each other. Flashback to Scandal High, where High Schooler Mom was flirting with Teacher Dad, while jealous onlookers VP and Uncle had seen each other for the first time. With adults so immature, who needs kids?

Choong-shik tells his buddies at school that he was going to stay away, but since Mari was searching for him so desperately, he returned. They point out that he can’t seem to put his butt down on a seat like he got spanked.

But Choong-shik corrects them—he allowed himself to be beaten by Mom to make her feel better. Hahaha.

Kyung-joon finds Mari crouching in front of his gate. She’s adorable when she thinks he’s mad at her. She says she brought him his favorite ice cream, but her face falls when she realizes it’s all melted now.

He takes it anyway and tells her it’s not her fault. “And Mom… that wasn’t your fault either.” I love the round robin of everyone clearing up everyone else’s guilt. She promises not to force everything to get her own way anymore, and he just drums his fingers on her head like he used to. She smiles.

Da-ran sits with Little Kyung-joon in the hospital, thinking again about his proposal. And then she meets with Se-young again (WHY?) to declare that she doesn’t care anymore about their past. So then… why are you calling her out to coffee if YOU DON’T CARE??

Anyway, she says that she’s going to be an adult and become a tree that doesn’t waver, so he can lean on her. That sounds like she’s talking about Kyung-joon, not Yoon-jae.

Se-young counters that to test her unwavering tree-ness, she’ll have to blow some wind her way every so often. Wind, my ass. You’re more like the opossum that won’t get your tail off the damn tree.

Da-ran slams her fist down and challenges her to try, because she’s going to be like the tree in the national anthem and be strong like she’s chained to the ground. To that end, she goes back to search for the lost ring.

Kyung-joon finds her and lets her fish around for a while before presenting her with the ring that he already found. He holds it out, and she stares at it for a while first. She finally admits that she still has feelings for Yoon-jae.

Kyung-joon: “I know that the person Gil Da-ran is looking at right now isn’t Kang Kyung-joon. I’m not going to be a little kid anymore, and block someone’s heart from going to the person they like.”

She in turns says, “I’ll help you grow up well, by your side. Kang Kyung-joon, marry me. I’ll raise you well.” That’s actually cute—she’s proposing to raise him. She takes the ring with a smile and then pets him on the head. Adorable.

He goes over the terms with her, deciding that if he’s still in this body by age twenty (legal adulthood), then they’ll split up and go their separate ways. She gives herself a little pep talk that the ring is like the tree’s chains, and vows to stand firm.

She goes to put it on, but Kyung-joon stops her. He knows it won’t be like Yoon-jae putting it on her finger, but offers to do it in his stead. He promises once again not to be nice to her, just in case she forgets who he is and jumps his bones. So Dog Manners get reinstated, to her great dismay.

And then they argue over a little cheer, but I’ll tell ya right now—you two don’t get to hoi-hoi over this.

Mari returns to her Moon/Sun shaman to exchange her first talisman for a new one—this time one that will ensure that no matter how stuck together two people are, that they won’t end up liking each other.

The shaman sends Choong-shik to the other room again, but this time Mari protests that he’s not pure. Because of the porn? Pwahaha. He swears that it’s his dad’s, and goes to serve his part. Mari tells the shaman that this time the talisman has to work.

Se-young meets with Yoon-jae’s mother to tell her that she still wants to be in contact, even if Yoon-jae gets married. Well that’s just weird. Anyway, she notices the Miracle book on her stand and asks about it.

Mom tells her that it’s an unpublished book. Yoon-jae’s father drew it himself when Yoon-jae was still a child, and it’s about one child saving another… so that child can save someone else.

Wedding prep gets under way, and they’re seriously rushing this thing. With a day left, Mari tries on her bridesmaid’s dress… which looks like a bridal gown took a detour in a shrinking machine.

Choong-shik goes googly-eyed but has enough sense to tell her that wearing a dress like that isn’t really kosher at a wedding. Wouldn’t that steal the bride’s thunder? She says that’s the point, duh. This is going to be one fantastic wreck of a ceremony, isn’t it?

Da-ran and Kyung-joon go over last-minute things the day before the wedding, and Da-ran illustrates a point with a can of beer and a vitamin water. She says that the day he becomes an adult, she’ll crack open a can of beer for him herself.

He makes a move to open it now, but she stops him, saying that this is the line they cannot cross. She’s beer, and he’s soft drinks, and they are to abide by that rule.

He agrees to it—the day he becomes an adult, he drinks that beer, and they part coolly, like adults. They drink to it.

The wedding happens… offscreen? Hm. And Dad adds a wedding photo to his rock collection lineup. We catch up with the newlyweds (still trying to wrap my head around that fact) as they drive away from the wedding to the airport.

Da-ran is ecstatic about her honeymoon trip to China… which she’s going on alone. Ha. She’s using the time off as an excuse to go on a vacation. Kyung-joon is in a foul mood about it the whole way, and he drops her off, disappointed that she never once thought to ask him to come along.

But after she’s gone, he looks down and notices her ticket and passport, sitting there on the seat. That smile on his face is priceless. He just leans back and waits, and then pretends to be far away when she calls in a panic.

He says he’ll try to hurry… and then waits till the plane is in the air before sauntering into the airport with a huge grin. “Oh no… am I too late?” Pffft.

He takes her to eat Chinese food instead, suggesting she practice her Chinese with the cook in the kitchen, which is the worst consolation prize ever. She sighs that they should just go home, but he suggests that they go on a trip anyway – not a vacation, but a honeymoon. Her jaw drops.

Yoon-jae’s mom calls his father, disappointed in his lack of presence, though she seems quite used to it by now. He tells her that something important came up—he found out that “that child’s” mother was shot and killed.

She gasps and asks what happened to the child then, and Dad says he’s looking for him right now…

Kyung-joon and Da-ran walk through the airport discussing honeymoon destinations, and she says she wants to go to China, to see the long gil-da-ran Great Wall. He smiles, “Okay, we’ll get Gil Da-ran on the gil-da-ran Great Wall then.”

She wonders belatedly how he happens to have his suitcase and passport handy. Heh.

She admits that she wanted to ask him to come with her earlier, but thought it would be weird to be on a honeymoon with him. He totally raises his eyebrows knowingly, “Why?”

She gets flustered trying to explain that what people go on honeymoons for is… well… And he laughs at her. Sometimes I do wonder who the adult is in this relationship.

She makes an excuse to run off and get cash, and wonders aloud why her heart’s all aflutter at the thought that he’s coming with her. She slaps her face to get it together and not let it show in front of Kyung-joon.

He looks at all the possible destinations and grins like a fool in anticipation. But suddenly a strange feeling comes over him, and he falters.

We get a vision of Little Kyung-joon in the hospital. His body jolts…

Da-ran comes running up, “Kyung-joon-ah…”

I’m holding my breath…

He comes to, and says, “I think I just went to my own body and came back. Congratulations, Gil Teacher. It looks like Seo Yoon-jae is coming back.”

COMMENTS

And… I don’t even know if that’s a good thing anymore. I know it has to happen eventually, but the thought of a switch-back makes me nervous, and Da-ran seems damn near terrified of facing Yoon-jae now. As well she should, since she off and married his body while he was asleep. I still think actual marriage was a big ass mistake, since she could find other less permanent ways to protect Kyung-joon without marrying Yoon-jae’s shell. I… just don’t understand her. I’ve tried so hard to, but every time I think I get close to liking her, she throws me for a loop. I spent the whole episode thinking that the only person who made any sense was Mari. And she’s crazy. I don’t know what that says about me, but I swear, crazy girl was the only one talking any sense today.

If Da-ran had married Yoon-jae in the beginning and then Kyung-joon got swapped in, we could have had the marriage hijinks without Da-ran choosing to marry a teenager now. I know it’s not real—she’s not marrying Kyung-joon to marry him, but it’s still in no way the only solution that could have come out of the situation. I know they tried to make it a backed-into-a-corner thing with the parents, but that’s just stretching my story logic a bit too far. Body swap makes perfect sense, but this marriage does not.

That’s not to say that I don’t like the relationship, because everything about her choice to stick by Kyung-joon’s side and help him grow up is what I do really love about her. (Though in my estimation, it took us way too long to get there with the character.) I love that she’s choosing to be his tree, and that her intentions are (I think) finally in the right place. But the idea that they HAD to get married to preserve that makes me roll my eyes. Because that makes the kind of sense that doesn’t.

What I do like is that in the course of the episode, Da-ran goes from asking herself what Yoon-jae’s feelings are, to figuring out what HER feelings are. And then the conclusion isn’t actually about Yoon-jae at all, but about Kyung-joon and the fact that she wants to take responsibility for him, in the adult-to-child way. I’m with her when she decides to be his tree and not waver, so he can lean on her and grow up. That gets me in the heart. I just wish that they had come up with a method that didn’t involve a sham wedding. ‘Cause even a sham engagement is something I would’ve been onboard with, but sealing the deal?

I’m beginning to realize why I wasn’t invited to the Mistake Parade that was their wedding. Because at the “speak now or forever hold your peace” part, I would’ve been Head Nerd in a classroom, hand in the air going, “Oooh, ooh ooh ooh, pick me! Pick me! Me! Over here! Yoo-hoo! Ooh ooh! Me! Not wanting to hold my peace! Er, whatever that means!” *arm cramp*

Can't understand Da-ran......She suppose to be young and naive, but she acts like such a FLAKE.She acts more childish than Kyung Joon. If I lost my engagement ring, I would have a hissy fit.
Also, who goes in the dark by yourself to the Seoul subway station where the creeps hangout?
And why ask Seo Young about her relationship with Yoon Jae? Could she handle the truth? I think she is the weakest, stupidest character in this drama.
Also, I agree the marriage is crazy. They show Mari at the wedding wearing a brides dress, but the actual wedding isn't shown?
Who goes on a honeymoon by yourself as well as losing the passport and airline tickets? When I travel, I make sure those two items are on my person before going into the airport. She is so dumb. When does she start acting like an adult?
Da-ran keeps getting some (romantic?) feeling for Kyung Joon while in Yoon Jae's body.If Yoon Jae and Kyung Joon are somehow family related and they switch back, this could be one of the most messiest plots when Da-ran has to finally choose one of them.
Da-ran married Yoon Jae anyway while he was comatose. How do you explain that to him when he awakens? Eeew! What a conundrum for the Hong sisters to resolve!
I just love the child actors at the pediatric hospital. They're are absolutely the cutest and most adorable children. Also, love the parodies of the Moon Embraces the Sun and CSI.LOL.

If I lost an engagement from a man's who affection I was unsure of, and for whom my own feelings were uncertain, I'd view the loss of the ring as a sign/omen/portent and let it lie where it fell.

Well. Why doesn't she feel worried about losing the ring? Girlfriday already says it. That's the sign. Because she doesn't care about the ring or YJ or SY. She is trying to find an excuse not to get married because she already made a firm decision in episode 5. But getting married, according to KJ, is the only way to “help: KJ.

Why is the actual wedding not shown? because for DR, that's NOT the real marriage. She only does it for KJ's sake. That's why there is no wedding, no dress, and even honeymoon is a solo trip to China by DR. For KJ, that's the wedding he dreams of so he prepares a passport and luggage with him. Why did Mari show up with wedding dress? Because even though she knows it's a fake marriage, she wants to marry KJ.

Also, if she doesn't forget the passport, how can KJ find a chance to go on a journey with her? lol. That's a typical Kdrama narrative device. Blame the writers and the production company. I guess they don't have the budget to go to China. HA

That would make sense.

It would be weird and random if the child was Da Ran's brother. [There is nothing to support that but I just like the actor/character combination and want to see more of him]

Truth be told, after Gumiho I haven't been very hooked on a Hong Sisters drama... Greatest Love was okay but a little over the top from the male lead.. whereas here, the storyline is lackluster and the female lead is supremely frustrating. I just want to slap some sense into her and shake her! URGH. WHAT A DUNCE.

I have come to a realization that while this may be part writing, it's also part Lee Min Jung. I've been a fan of her for a while but it's been one of those things where I want to keep rooting for her but she always seems to get on my nerves in one way or another. I think it's her dumb deer-in-headlights look, and the characters she picks that are generally stupid and naive to the point of being illogical. I can't believe a 30-something teacher would behave the way she does in everything where Yoon Jae is involved.

Anyways. Rant over.
Still sticking with the show cuz I love Gong Yoo and Suzy's cute.. and am loyal to Hong Sisters but I'm not too pleased with how this drama is going so far.

Also, I've had a hunch that KJ and YJ are brothers (since ep 2) but we'll see if this is true.. or if it's some ridiculous birth secret. Which is also likely.

SMA/Mi-ho was the best and pretty much the only good thing about MGIAG (which alone was enough to make it enjoyable).

TGL - overall was a much better written and acted romcom - the side characters, secondary love interest/relationship were much better fleshed out.

I notice she likes to flail her arms about helplessly. It seems to be one of the prerequisites of being a dumb innocent heroine. That, and tottering about on high heels. Let's just be thankful she doesn't deliver milk on her off days.

Well. If Yoon Jae wakes up next episode, and finds himself married to Da ran, it'd be a new twist. Yes, yes, I'm shipping YJ-DR, not in a I-can't-wait-omg-what's-going-to-happen! kind of way, but in a languid laidback way, like I'm dozing in a hammock on a warm lazy afternoon kind of way. So yawn, I'm excited in a mild sort of way. There's no point getting too excited because it'd probably be another what-on-earth-is-happening-I don't-get it episode again next week. One of my gripes about the show is that DR doesn't seem to be overly concerned about the fact that the man she loves is still in a coma after such a long time. If I were her, I would be DEVASTATED. I would be on the verge of giving up. I would be a mess. And I would be there by his bedside whenever I could, because I would want to be close to him. But our heroine? Nah, she seems to be doing just fine. In fact she seems almost....happy? She gets married! She's excitedly planning a trip to China! I just don't get her character. ??????

Why are you trying to be all logical?

My fav part about the advice from her mother as far as getting married (to an unwilling and unconcious person) is to "follow your heart this time."

What the heck?

How much wronger IN THIS SITUATION could this bit of smartness be? "Honey, it sooo doesn't matter that your fiance isn't around to agree with you before attaching the ball and chain to him. Just worry about YOU. That is the only thing that matters. YOUR heart. NOT his. Be selfish.
Be the BALL."

Why do we get that scene with fuzzy lighting and soft music? It really should have been the Psycho soundtrack!

What was I thinking! There's nothing wrong with this show at all - it's all silly me crapping about logic when it's actually supposed to be logic-less. And the heroine isn't dumb at all. She's just Cute and Clueless because if she's clever and sleek *light bulb flashes* SHE WOULDN'T BE IN THIS SHOW AT ALL! And if she wants to see the Pyramids next and the Taj Mahal after that, heck, who am I to gripe?

DR's mom doesn't know that YJ isn't in his body right now. As far as she knows, her daughter is wavering because she doesn't know if she can trust/love YJ again. So for her to advise DR to "follow her heart" is absolutely acceptable.

Based on this episode, here is my theory about the connection between KJ and YJ. They aren't brothers. At some point one of them was sick during childhood, and the other was a match for a donation of some kind. Like bone marrow. I think it would make sense that it was YJ who was sick and KJ who did the donating. So YJ feels a debt to KJ and was going to Los Angeles to not to run out on his wedding but to see what he could do for KJ after somehow finding out what happened to his mother. Then that would probably mean that YJ wasn't wavering on marriage because he wasn't sure about DR, but because he isn't sure that whatever he dealt with can be passed on to any future offspring.
Okay, if this all happens this way, I'm giving myself a high five.

Wow, first time with this show I really got an unexpected surprise!

I mean body swap!! I really didn't expect it will come back so soon (since they focus so much about KJ/DR relationship, I thought body swap will be happen in the very end). Well, that was good surprise (at least to me) since I don't care KJ/DR romance part anymore....

On the other hand...the marriage...I don't want to talk much about their relationship anymore, but still...How they can think the marriage was only solution with the situation?

why is it that most is annoyed to DR's character, if she's not like that i dont think the drama will go that far..the story is about her and KJ and how will the events in their life make them grow personally and be closer or be together in the end..eventually, i think along the way DR will develop her character, and that the coming events in her life where make her strong and think more lika an adult, its just that its too early for now to do that..its good to know, that she is starting to fully see KJ in (YG's body) and is now trying to protect him even if its hard for her to see him in YG's body..though the sham wedding is way overboard to do, but i think it has a purpose (which i leave to the Hong Sisters on how they will go with it)..

honestly, KJ even acts manly and maturely that YG which is what i like of his character to DR..KJ is always DR's hero and savior..while DR is his angel, always there to take care and be there for him..i like both KJ and DR character whenever they are together..

and also, if DR will always be beside YG (in KJ's body), would it be the situation be too obvious and suspicious to everyone in the story to see and make everyone wonder why is that so when the body of his fiance is alive..deep inside her, i think she feels pain on the situation..but what can we do, if the person using YG's body is more mature and caring for her..hence,gives her more the confusion..

sorry for the long post, just sharing my opinion..

The other thing about the marriage plot device is that I find it is pretty terrible and ultimately puts Da Ran in a bad light, even though she is a victim of circumstance. But of course, people will say that she is irresponsible and crazy and making a huge mistake.

Ma Ri opposed the marriage because she likes KJ. That is simple. However, this isn't a simple situation. The fact of the matter is no one knows about the body switch except for those three. To the outside world, KJ is YJ. YJ is currently not fully re-instated at the hospital (we never see him do surgery anymore or go into his office for work) and living off of his mother who wishes he would marry someone (and prefers that someone to be SY, but she seems resigned to have Da Ran instead since at least it is SOMEONE her precious son can lean on.)

Then there are Da Ran's parents, especially Da Ran's dad who basically threatened her (how serious he was, I have no idea) that if she didn't marry YJ (aka KJ) he would not acknowledge her or YJ ever again.

So, she's faced with a choice: never see YJ again or marry YJ. The first option means she can't protect KJ anymore.

I think that's of the the points of this drama. Da Ran is an adult, yet she is still very naive and inexperienced when it comes to making adult decisions. She's growing up as much as KJ is, in my opinion.

I thought this episode was hilarious. I loved the crazy comedic moments, especially the CSI music with teacher Na's investigation. However, I agree about the wedding. I think Da Ran could have protected Kyung Joon just fine as his fiancee, and they could have put the wedding off for at least a year.
With the whole family reunion thing, I think it's like a memorial thing—not necessarily for a death, but more like "let's celebrate the miracle that happened when Kyung Joon saved Yoon Jae's life". It seems that they may have skipped it last year to let "Yoon Jae" recover since his parents think he doesn't remember anything anyway, but I seem to remember Kyung Joon saying something a couple episodes back about "that day" coming up. So it seems that he knows at least something about the anniversary they celebrate on his birthday.
Also, the whole having a baby to save another child's life rings true to me, although I'm not convinced KJ and YJ are brothers/related. Something definitely happened on KJ's birthday that impacted YJ's entire life.
I love this drama, and the Hong sisters' dramas are very hit and miss for me. Right now, I'm just trusting that they really do know where they are taking things, and that there will be big payoffs for our confusion. I hope.

I am shocked they decided to go with the wedding, too. I have no idea how they are going to resolve all of this if KJ and DR are the OTP. After all, KJ has to return to his body, right? But it's just too weird for DR to divorce KJ's brother(?) and marry him instead. It would have been more mature for DR to take a stand and say she needs more time to think about the marriage. Plus, the wedding is unfair to YJ since we don't know what his intentions are.
Since Gongyoo has to be the main character, maybe there will be another time jump that allows Gongyoo to play KJ's actual adult self (since KJ and YJ are brothers, dramas can take that liberty, right? After all, this drama isn't going for realism or anything).
But, despite this weird episode, I love KJ and DR's relationship and the growth of the characters. I hope the Hong sisters have a great twist to explain everything, though please no deus ex machina where this is all a dream or something.

After watching episode 8 i developed a theory on the mystery behind the Kyun Joon/ Yoon Jea connection. I do think they are definitely brothers, but i think it goes beyond that. I think Kyun Joon's birth had a purpose and was planned. What if, when Yoon Jea was 11/12 he was diagnosed with cancer, leukemia to be more specific? What if, he was in need of bone marrow transplant? Then best candidates to donate are usually brothers and sisters. But Yoon Jea looks to have been an only child by that age, judging by the picture of mom, dad and Yoon jea. Here is where i think the planned birth occurred. i think his parents procured a surrogate mother so that a child could be born to save another. it would, to me, explain Yoon Jea's kindness and need to protect those that are sick and helpless. Also his being a pediatrician and his connection to the cancer event that was mentioned in the first episodes. I think it would also explain why the date of Kyun Joon's birth would be so important to him as well as his family, since they seem to gather on that day. I also wonder about where Kyun's Joon's money or inheritance comes from. It does not seem that it was his mothers family inheritance, since her brother doesn't seem to have much seeing as he is clinging to Kyun Joon for that reason. I have the feeling, that money comes from Yoon Jea's family. Now what i am not really clear on is weather Kyun Joon is Yoon Jea's half brother or his full brother. If full sibling then why did they not keep him. Is it seen wrong by their culture to have another women carry a married couples child in her womb? is that why they moved to America. I have no clue on that but since they seem to be more conservative. there reason i i think he could be full sibling is cause mom didn't seem to resent the mother or child when the father told her what had happened with them. she seems the type to hold a grudge. So it didn't seem like he was talking about his child with another women. Of course she might not feel any resentment if she was okay with it because it was done to save her own child. We'll see i guess.

The idea of the Savior/Donor child through surrogacy jump out at me during this episode. Mostly due to the YJ mom's lack of the standard K-drama rage at the though of that child.

But it was late last night when I watched the episode and read the recap and I hadn't really considered much why they need that savior baby or YJ connection to medicine and sick children with cancer.

I figured that YJ's hesitation about he marriage to DR was related to KJ. Now I'm wondering if YJ is healthy.

If whatever endangered his life in childhood is back--and terminal, it would make his hesitation in marrying DR understandable. Because from what we have learned about YJ he wouldn't want to give DR the burden of a dying husband.

If that is the case, the body switch would have YJ making sure that the person he loves DR and the person he owes his life to KJ will love and take care of each other.

I don't understand why are ppl only questioning the marriage thing now? If it's wrong, why no outcry when it was first brought in as a plot to throw the mom off etc?

As i see it, It's just a means of them getting the mom off his back till he has grown up enough. Until the last bit in the episode, there was no reason to think that yj was coming back anytime soon, if ever..

She agreed to it mainly to protect him and protect kj so that he could continue to be kj until it bcame acceptable for him to be as kj to everyone else in yj's body.

That's how I see it anyway.

I dont like how they throw in random past connections etc though.. Is it for comic relief. Does feel disjointed.. I don't mind if later on I find that that was deliberate to support some plot or character development.

The relation between KJ and YJ may be donor/receiver, but I don't understand why the secret about it (maybe it was illegal).

Mari annoys me to hell, she should be on screen only with CS, they work together well.

The parents love-story and one-sided-love stories of uncle and VP totally uninteresting and boring (for me).

The fact that the wedding wasn't shown... could have been very purposeful, e.g. something to pull out later to invalidate the wedding.

We'll see...

Not a fan of Mari either (mostly just bores me and occasionally annoys me, like with the wedding dress, and also creeps me out, like with the window breaking).

All the other love entanglements of the parents/VP/etc... SO NOT INTERESTING. Like they are entanglements for the sake of making things even more complicated but it becomes so fake that it just falls flat for me...

Wel I am not surprised that DR's father told her to marry. The family was completely humiliated when they didn't go through with it the first time. He was supposedly going to strip clubs. They called off the wedding and then he skipped town. So when they hear they're dating again, I think any father would be concerned whether they're serious this time. His daughter's and family's reputation was tarnished last time, so he gave them an ultimatum. I would be ready to disown her to for seeing a guy she broke it off with. But judging from his reaction I don't think he expected them to go through with it.

I honestly don't care if she winds up with KJ. But if YJhas to die for that to happen, I am done with dramas. That would be the ultimate unfairness. He went back to get K, which if he hadn't done, he would have lived. For his efforts, hegets a trip to the morgue and now he may or may not be stuck in a comatose body. And honestly when a person hasn't woken up in a year, there's a good chance it's going through atrophy and brain damage. All the while, we discover YJ is not such a bad guy. So if he has to go through a third metaphorical death all so everyone to get their happy OTP, I am done. I have been picking bad drama after bad drama and judging by the predictions this will be another.

A question: in Korea, are 18-19 year olds more or less mature than in the US? I have a 19 Ito daughter and while needing to mature some more, she's an adult IMO.

As for how the drama will end as far as the romance...let me make my prediction now...Kj ends up back in YJ's body. Clearly he's the better man for DR...I don't think that we are finished with the back and forth about YJ's character although he may well end up still being a good guy.

Between now and the end, I think there will be a switch to their proper bodies. DR will then will be toubled by wanting to see KJ's soul whien she looks into the eyes of "that shell"...then something will happen to return them to the switched bodies - perhaps the next saving of a child... KJ saving DR?

I can't answer your question, but legal age is 20 in Korea... and that probably means that in eyes of society in general 18-19 year olds are not perceived as adults.

Which doesn't mean that they are necessarily immature - I'm sure some are perfectly grown up, while others aren't (which probably would apply anywhere in the world).

Maybe some of this is a reflection of the different attitude of young people in Korea towards their elders (vs. the US), but I've noticed that in many KDramas even the mid 20's characters seem very much their parents' "children" (Da-ran being an example).

Thanks for the very funny and insightful recap.

I LOVE THIS SHOW!
I think DR is a great immature heroine. I like her as a person, and understand her confusion over her feelings for YJ/KJ. Mostly, she just wants to protect KJ, the kid, and would go to any length to do so.

The sham marriage, while preposterous, gives KJ breathing room for the next few years. It was a huge sacrifice on her part, and I think KJ realizes that BIG TIME.

The feelings we see develop aren't just physical attraction
but deeper. Why NOT go on a vacation with KJ? He is fun, he understands her, and he likes her, too.

The plot keeps putting blocks in between them falling into romantic love, and I am all for that. They cannot consumate this marriage. Chultae!

I go back to my first idea that any falling in love for real between KJ and DR won't happen until he gets his own body back. THAT is when the "Do I want to marry a boy-looking person?' shi6 gets real, and not a second before that. It gets me all excited thinking about how she would handle it...

Thank you for the recaps.

At the end of ep.8, there's some "hints" that YJ will be "coming back" and KJ is "seeing" himself and he thought that his soul will "back" to his body.

But I do think it would be amusing if YJ is "coming back" but in KJ's body~~? [...and KJ still remains in YJ's body] And for a while we can see how YJ in KJ's body....something like 360' turning point~ wouldn't it be amusing [for some reason, we do need to see some ShinWonHo's acting...right~? At this point, we only see him lying unconscious~haha]
Would it be interesting how YJ will be attending school (and DR is the homeroom teacher..off coz) as 18yo student. (And see YJ in KJ's body do some doctor_saving_people part)....and some jealousy coz of DR already married to KJ [well, since KJ is still in his body]

Yeah, let's make things a bit out of box since we already have the mom's_dad's_"that child"_picture book mystery (^_^;;)

But off coz at the end I would love GR end up with YJ...I do think that YJ is innocent here..he totally in love with GR...there's nothing between YJ & that SY~~huhu

Really? Really? The black man shot KJ mother for nothing! K-drama kryptonite is thinking they know any thing about American, especially African American. The same crap was in Golden Bride, whenever they incorporate African America in they drama it always negative. If I were to judge Korean base on dramas then my opinion of them would be that they are backward, lack any kind of decent upbringing, disrespectfully, racist, weak, pathetic, rude and stupid that is if I was to believe dramas.

Since I know an act of respect is NOT to pass judgment on a person, a cultures or a nation base on TV and movie, I hope in the next 100 hundred Korea will learn that act as while.

That's not true - there are a no. of examples, such as the film D-Wars which had a significant BM character who was a news cameraman.

While I thought that the shooter being black was unnecessary, in American shows centered in major urban areas, often, the criminal is black.

While whites are depicted as criminals as well, it's mostly as white-collar criminals.

And one can say the same about American film/TV regarding Asians.

Most of the time you see Asians in American films/TV shows, they are Asian gangsters or some Asian women being abused/oppressed.

I'm not saying that Korean TV has the most progressive views when it comes to race, but it has more to due w/ the lack of awareness than anything else (same goes for in Japan and Taiwan).

No, I did not forget that because I wasn't talking about how Asia is perceived in America. Since you went there I educate you on stereotype. There is a big different between positive stereotype verses negative stereotype. I don't know what world you live in that being thought of as smart is a negative. What I will think would be offensive that American think all Asia only know how to do nails and own a Chinese restaurant but the most offensive is that most American think all Asia are either Chinese or Japanese they don't even think the person might be Korean, Philippine, ETC.

There are a lot of perception on people cultures, but when you only focus on the negative that were it become disrespectfully.

"BD stated: Most of the time you see Asians in American films/TV shows, they are Asian gangsters or some Asian women being abused/oppressed."

Hello that all you see in Korean film that are written and directed by Asia. K-drama success is build on Asia women being abused/oppressed but the sad thing it made they own people! As for Asia being seen as Asia gangster they also seen as student, friends, Hero, survivors, Police officer etc check out these American blockbuster and successful TV shows for example. Distrubia, Lost, Walking Dead, Charlie Angels, X-men, Bridesmaids, Indiana Jones,Rush Hour, Hawaii Five-o, Awkward, Glee should I go on?

"BD stated: While I thought that the shooter being black was unnecessary, in American shows centered in major urban areas, often, the criminal is black."

That my point it American shows not real life, and urban does not mean lack people live here, it another definition for city where it is very diverse. NY, Chicago, LA, Boston are all consider urban areas but they if you visited you know urban is occupancy by mostly white.

"BD Stated "While whites are depicted as criminals as well, it’s mostly as white-collar criminals."

This I found to be very funny. Incorrect whites are depicted as criminal and they are not white collar they are horrific. Law in order, SVU, Criminal Minds,Prison break, Dexter, American History X, Mystic River. I can go on forever not to mention real life crimes.

"BD stated" I’m not saying that Korean TV has the most progressive views when it comes to race, but it has more to due w/the lack of awareness than anything else (same goes for in Japan and Taiwan).

I fully aware that Korea is not the only country that has no respect for African American but lack of awareness is not something to use as an excuse.

Another theory! What if the child that saved the other wasn't KJ, but a sibling, maybe even a twin, who died, and whose organs were donated, saving YJ? That would account for KJ's picture in his wallet, to remember the sibling that he had, and it would account for YJ's family gathering on KJ's birthday, because it would have also been the twin's birthday. YJ's family would feel like they owed a debt to KJ's family. YJ would also maybe always feel protective of KJ because of the sacrifice made by KJ's twin. Also, everyone would totally buy that an angelic baby twin would want to save KJ and YJ from a watery grave. PLUS that would set a repeated theme (the kind that the Hong Sisters love so) of tragedy/miracle.
If it happens like that, I'm giving myself TWO high fives.

So they get married, go on their honeymoon, get drunk, make out, and consummate the marriage. Next morning, she wakes up with a start, realises what has happened, starts screaming and shrieking and raining blows on him lying next to her: "It's not supposed to be you! It's supposed to be YJ! My first time is supposed to be with YJ!" He sits up in bed, and blocks her blows, his abs heaving with the effort (I put this last in specially for Jomo), leans in close to her, and says, "Listen. Listen to me. I. AM. YJ."

The souls switched back at the precise moment of consummation. Talk about timely intervention.

Hong sisters' dramas always tend to lose my love during the halfway point, and this drama seems to follow that pattern. It's like they're super wacky, which I love, but they have complicated dramatic plot and the switch is always very rough. Maybe because I love the wacky more than the drama. That's why I always appreciate the side love story, like the one that's unraveling between the Gil parents and their two unrequited lovers which gave me quite a laugh.

One loop that I'm really curious about is what is Yoon-jae doing for the whole year then? Is he in a mind coma then? Because for some reasons I find it unfair that Kyung-joon can still roam around, at least mentally, while YJ is locked up. Also it seems like KJ is doing YJ's dirty laundry by trying to convey what YJ is too chicken to say to Da-ran or anyone else.

I'm really hoping next week will pick up faster because it's been dragging on and on. With the revelation that YJ's dad has something to do with KJ and his family, I think it'll start rolling. Truthfully I won't be surprised if KJ ends up being YJ's secret half brother or some other wacky thing. I just hope they'll hurry and maybe even give us a surprise we never thought will happen?

Honestly, I've given up making sense of the story. I'm just looking at Gong Yoo and wondering what makes this guy soooo nice to look at ;-) Coz if you analyze his facial features separately, there's really nothing extraordinary about it, but the whole face + that sculpted body = GORGEOUS MAN.

My friend and I started a podcast to discuss Big. Our first episode covers Big (episodes 1 & 2). It would be great if you guys could listen to it and provide us with feedback.

GF said it all for me, tho i would have been less politic. the sheer illogic of this show simply boggles the mind. also as a woman, i can't really identify with DR's character. she's unbelievably dim. and hers is not the kind of mature love a woman about to get married ought to have: she loves YJ but practically abandons him in the hospital? and she breaks off and marries him (his body) all on her own while he's in a coma. and idk, in a country where there's a rude and respectful way of handing money over when paying for goods, how heartless is it to repeatedly call one a "blood clot" to one's face?

yet it's so heartbreaking to watch GY in this show. Clearly he has been exerting his best efforts to do well in this drama but the story simply fails him. just look at the drop in comments in DB. it's like watching rats flee a sinking ship.

i watched SBS "the chaser", KBS2 "Big" drama competition from same timeslot and i love that drama, i understand now why korean prefer that drama over Big, that why im not sure even after Light and Shadow end, Big will catch up on rating if the story line keep like this..

I’ve heard both but it seems that it is neither.

Listen to the very first song. The one playing from the first to the 20th second. Hahaha. That is what I am talking about:

I love this drama can't wait to next ep I wonder what's gonna happen if KJ and YJ switches back? I heard they are half brothers? and Ra Dan realises that YJ might still love her before the accident because of the ring he didnt get a chance to give her.... I hope she doesn't fall for him again Ma Ri and Choong Shik should get together :)

I have a perfect solution for all those people (including me) who feel a distachemnet from the real KKJ (Shin). They should do what they did in Secret Garden, when they would have the real person Shin (KKJ) actually talking to Da-ran, instead of it always being (YG). SO for example, if Da-ran came to visit KKJ at the hospital while hes working (does he actually work anyways? o.O) then we see Shin Won HO ( the real KKJ) in his doctor uniform, but it quickly switches back to YG. That way it would be easier to feel as if Shin actually was apart of the show and had dialogue, instead of him just playing sleeping beauty all the time.

I just really hope at the end of all this the OTP isn't the real Kyung Joon and Da Ran's soul in Ma Ri's body. Seriously before Gong Yoo took over, Lee Min Jung and Shin Won Ho had some serious chemistry, so I'd be fine as long as it's Kyung Joon in the end. It would be interesting to see what actually would happen if the souls switched back and Da Ran had to choose between the real Kyung Joon once he turns twenty and the real Yoon Jae when his soul comes back to his body. She's making too many memories with Kyung Joon. By the time Yoon Jae comes back, Da Ran might truly be over him.

oh gosh, i hope that dont make Da ran's soul ending up in Mari's body. i find that worser than any other ending mentioned above since it would be weird and totally rushed in a sense that they cant end it properly.
