You From Another Star: Episode 12

So much heart, which perhaps explains why there’s also so much heartbreak. The greater the stakes, the greater the pain? Even so, I’m full of optimism about where the emotions will eventually take us, and at this point it hardly matters whether that’s mostly the delusion talking (no sad endings nooooo), because I’m clinging to that hope like it’s a lifeline. Because it is, at least for Min-joon.

All this meaty angst has propelled You From Another Star to another ratings high; it has been hovering in the mid-twenties for the past few episodes, but broke through to hit 26.4% with numéro 12.

RECAP: TWELFTH RECORD

Min-joon is hit by a car—he sees it coming, but either cannot or does not stop it. He flies into the air and slams into the ground, where blood pools around his head at an alarming rate.

A couple pulls over by the side of the road and calls emergency, staying until the ambulance arrives. But when they look for the victim, the body that was there moments earlier is now gone, leaving behind only a silhouette outlined by the fresh snow.

We jump back one hour, when Se-mi dangles information about the identity of Song-yi’s long-awaited savior. Song-yi surprises her by stating that she doesn’t care to know the thing Se-mi’s dying to tell her, and finally realizes that Se-mi has been secretly in love with Hwi-kyung all this while.

Se-mi hadn’t meant to give up that secret but admits to it, saying that she’s loved him for as long as Hwi-kyung has loved Song-yi. Things sharpen into clarity for Song-yi, who acknowledges that Se-mi must’ve hated her quite a bit because of that. She also understands that the sudden mention of her rescuer is prompted by spite—and therefore she tells Se-mi to keep that knowledge to herself. After all, Song-yi can’t believe a single thing she says, seeing that Se-mi wasn’t honest with her over their entire fifteen-year friendship.

Song-yi explains that she was curious about the man who saved her life on the same night she lost her father, and for that reason she wanted to meet him again—however, she doesn’t care about that now. If she has cause to recognize him in the present, well, she’ll come to that on her own. So Se-mi had better not speak of him again, she warns, or use that man as an excuse to toy with her.

I love her response, especially since it just about gobsmacks Se-mi into speechlessness. Song-yi adds that people have a tendency to see somebody in a better place, and rather than wishing themselves to go to that nice place, they pray for the other person to fall down into their own abyss. She declares, “Sorry, but I won’t go down to the abyss where you live. Hating someone, being jealous, doing hellish things—I won’t do any of that. So don’t try to bring me down to your level.” I think that calls for one triumphant booyah.

Song-yi tries calling and texting Min-joon, growing increasingly anxious when he doesn’t reply. So when she sees Yoon-jae rejecting a call from a girl who likes him, she smacks him upside the head and goes off on a rant about common courtesy and answering calls. Aw. Listen to your noona!

Finally Song-yi heads next door, where she sees blood on the handle. Alarmed, she lets herself in and finds Min-joon collapsed in a fresh pool of blood. Ack! That looks horrific.

As she hovers over him, Min-joon dreams (or experiences a spiritual moment as he faces the afterlife) that he stands on the far side of a river while Song-yi stands on the other side, shouting his name and begging him not to leave. He vanishes… and reappears before her to take her hand. They smile at each other, and the vision tilts on its axis, landing us back in the present moment.

Song-yi calms a bit when Min-joon opens his eyes, and grabs her phone to call for an ambulance. But he manages to groan a contradiction, telling her that he can’t go to the hospital.

Instead Lawyer Jang is called again, and does the best he can in wrapping up the wound. He thanks Song-yi for not taking him to the hospital, then decides to divulge one truth by informing her that Min-joon will be leaving in less than two months. He doesn’t explain why or how, but advises Song-yi to start preparing her feelings to part ways, because it will do neither of them any good to grow too attached.

He asks her to leave Min-joon to rest, but Song-yi can’t go far and paces in the hallway for hours, which Lawyer Jang sees via the door camera.

Jae-kyung receives word of Min-joon’s escape from Killer Secretary, not noticing that Hwi-kyung can overhear their conversation in front of the house. He mentions Min-joon being badly hurt and disappearing at the last minute, and while it doesn’t implicate Jae-kyung directly, it sounds ominous enough that Hwi-kyung ducks out of view. Too bad for him hyung spots him anyway. Aieeee. I feared for little bro when he was oblivious, but now that he’s on to Jae-kyung’s nefarious nature, he’s just put a target on his own back.

Min-joon sleeps, telling us, “I dreamed a happy dream.” The dream sequence depicts his very mundane but heartfelt fantasies as Song-yi wakes him up in bed, then insists on cooking breakfast (while a nervous Min-joon stands by to catch any dishes she will inevitably drop).

They watch television together, with Song-yi reaching to order freely from the home shopping channel while Min-joon tells her to save her money and wrestles with her for possession of the phone.

Then they return to the frozen lake, where this time Min-joon joins Song-yi in lying down and making snow angels.

As they walk home together, Song-yi has a craving for ice cream. He says it’ll make her gain weight, and she worries that she already has. The camera pans down to reveal that she’s hugely pregnant, aww, and Min-joon tells her she’s more beautiful this way.

Then they finish off the night by reading in bed and snuggling down together. The desires are beautiful in their simplicity, and therefore heartbreaking. Min-joon concludes, “And I realized that happy dreams make me even unhappier when I wake.”

Hwi-kyung finds Song-yi still crouched in front of Min-joon’s door. His brother’s conversation tips him off that something bad happened to Min-joon, though he says he merely guessed that based on Song-yi’s worried face. She asks Hwi-kyung not to tell anyone about Min-joon’s accident; if he refused the hospital, there must be a reason for it.

Mom arrives in good spirits, presenting the agency documents for Song-yi to sign. Hwi-kyung is surprised to hear of Jae-kyung’s intentions, and also suspicious. So when Song-yi declares her disinterest in signing, he cuts Mom off from nagging and assures Song-yi that she’s fine to decline.

Detective Park knocks on Min-joon’s door, intent on interrogating him over Seok’s attack. He gets Lawyer Jang at the door, who is sharp enough to see that Detective Park is overstepping legal bounds and eyeing Min-joon as a suspect, despite claims that he’s merely a witness. Go Lawyer Jang, go!

Rebuffed at one door, Detective Park heads to Song-yi’s and flashes his badge at her. She lets him in (urggg, I hate his smugness thinking he’s so onto Min-joon’s villainy), though she offers him no useful information. His question about Min-joon being at the wedding on the ship triggers her memories—the ones she’d written off as a dream—but she tells the cop that there’s no way Min-joon could have been there and that she knows of nothing strange about him.

Then he asks if Min-joon had any involvement with Yura, sharing his hunch about him being Yura’s secret boyfriend. Song-yi emphatically denies that and shares what she does know, recounting the scene she witnessed on the boat. Ah, finally somebody points the finger in Jae-kyung’s direction.

The detective asks Song-yi what her relationship to Min-joon is, smirking knowingly. But she can only answer honestly that she doesn’t know.

At the dinner table, Hwi-kyung sneaks a glance when Jae-kyung unlocks his phone, and uses that PIN to gain access while his brother showers later. He finds the entry for “K”—the woman who called frantically the other day—and copies down the number, but in his haste he drops the phone and just barely shoves it back before hyung emerges from the bathroom.

Jae-kyung is instantly suspicious, though both brothers feign friendliness as they talk about plans for Song-yi’s agency. Then Hwi-kyung slips back to his room to call the number for K, finding that it belongs to a psychiatric hospital. He asks if the ex-wife is a patient there, but gets a denial. Jae-kyung must’ve used a fake name, I’m guessing.

Min-joon recovers quickly given the gravity of his head wound, and Lawyer Jang asks how he got into the accident in the first place. Min-joon is mystified too, because he should have been able to do something with his powers to save himself—even though he was slightly weakened, this is the first time he has been wholly unable to control his powers. He supposes that his abilities may be disappearing one by one with his departure date approaching.

Lawyer Jang admits that he told Song-yi to move on, to Min-joon’s alarm. He adds that spending half his life protecting Min-joon was “the most meaningful work in my life” (tears), and he can’t just stand by doing nothing while Min-joon gets caught up in trouble, especially with his powers waning. He reminds Min-joon of his own words, that interfering in human matters only made everything worse, and asks if interfering in Song-yi’s matters has improved anything. Lawyer Jang urges Min-joon to move away immediately to make the separation easier, a suggestion that makes Min-joon’s face fall, though he can’t argue.

Song-yi finds Min-joon’s door passcode changed and can only ring the doorbell, which goes unanswered. She looks into the camera as Min-joon watches longingly from inside, and tells him, “There were so many things I was going to ask, but now I don’t need to know. You’ve opened your eyes and woken up, so it’s enough for me. I miss you.”

Finally awake, Seok recuperates from his attack and hears of Detective Park’s latest findings about the fountain pen and Yura’s boyfriend. Intent on getting back to work immediately, Seok leaves the hospital, to his mother’s displeasure.

Mom overhears enough to cotton on that the Yura case is heading in the “foul play” direction, and she takes her suspicions to Se-mi. This is a cause for concern, because to Mom’s thinking, Song-yi may get her reputation restored—and then Se-mi will stop reaping the benefits of taking all of Song-yi’s leftovers. Oh boo effin’ hoo, Mom. Nice priorities.

Se-mi seems to agree, though she’s shrewder about playing this close to the vest as she takes action to manage the fallout preemptively. So when she meets with a director for her first leading movie role, she suggests that he cast Song-yi—as her sidekick. She says with false sweetness that she’d really love to help her friend make a comeback. I’m sure.

Song-yi comes home to find a realtor at Min-joon’s door with a prospective new tenant. (Ha, it’s the return of Jung Eun-pyo, who previously played Min-joon’s Joseon realtor friend; this character is his tenth generation descendant, lol.)

Not about to accept Min-joon’s move so easily, Song-yi offers the “tip” that there’s something wrong with the property, blaming her move her for precipitating her current downfall. Muttering that she’s lost money and her health, she starts hacking conspicuously for good measure. Haha.

Song-yi has a pity party with Bok-ja, filling her in on the details of her crush’s impending departure and mysterious health concerns. Bok-ja wonders if the man is a criminal and warns Song-yi that she could become an accessory. Song-yi: “I did some reading on the internet, and they say that you can’t punish a spouse for that.” Bok-ja scoffs at that ridiculous notion, while Song-yi asks hopefully, “Would that really be so weird?”

Then Yoon-jae comes home and Bok-ja is smitten. Oh no, not that one! He’s not legal! But no worries, since then Hwi-kyung drops by and Bok-ja is smitten again. LOL.

The investigators meet with Jae-kyung to ask about his relationship with Yura, explaining that they heard from a witness. This leads us to a flashback of the night of her death:

On the boat, Yura is pulled into a room where Jae-kyung has prepared a romantic private party for them, and toasts her with champagne. She assures Jae-kyung that she’ll never betray him like his first wife did, chalking up the ex’s current misery as deserved punishment for her misdeeds.

Jae-kyung smiles and says that he knows she can’t betray him. When Yura wonders at her sudden dizziness, he outlines the effects of the drug he slipped her: First her limbs will paralyze, including her tongue so she can’t speak. Because it’s made of the same ingredients as her antidepressant, investigators will write it off as her usual meds. Thus her death will go down as just another in a long list of celebrity suicides.

Yura gasps in shock, but finds that the effects are coming on quickly and already she can’t speak. She staggers out of the room, grasping the railing like a lifeline, and backs away as Killer Secretary advances on her. Thanks to the fireworks show, nobody sees her being shoved overboard, and in the blink of an eye she’s gone.

Not that Jae-kyung would admit any of this to the investigators, of course. He denies having ever dated Yura, or fighting with her on the boat. She was merely his company’s brand model, nothing more.

To Jae-kyung’s surprise, Min-joon calls him for a meeting, looking remarkably healthy. Min-joon then offers to do as Jae-kyung wanted—take the fall for everything, then disappear. “Will you stop here, then?” he asks. Oh nooooo. I mean, I get it—if he’s going away anyway, may as well spare Song-yi the danger. But nooooo. Somebody’s gotta string up Jae-kyung as he deserves and nail him through the heart with his stupid ring. Or the spleen, given that he probably doesn’t have a heart.

With no other way of getting to Min-joon (well, no reasonable way), Song-yi contemplates crossing the space between her balcony and Min-joon’s. Convincing herself not to look down, she climbs up onto the planter between the two balconies, just as Min-joon calls. Asked what she’s doing, she admits she’s “currently risking my life to see you” but is only too happy to climb down when he asks to meet.

Buzzing with excitement, Song-yi gets dolled up, though Min-joon barely spares her a glance when he picks her up. (I love her response to his failure to open her door: “Well, I can open it myself. I have hands.”) As he drives, he asks about the questions she’d wanted to ask, which she explains don’t matter to her now: “You opened your eyes, woke up, and are next to me now. That’s enough.”

While she chatters cheerfully, Min-joon thinks to his earlier conversation with Lawyer Jang, who urged him to consider the relationship one that never should have begun. Min-joon had asked, his voice breaking on his tears, “Why must I do that? I have under two months left to see that woman. I like her. I care for her.”

In the present, Song-yi asks where he will be going in two months, offering that she’s fine with long-distance relationships. So if he’s pushing her away just because he has to leave, he doesn’t have to.

Past Min-joon continues his tearful confession to Lawyer Jang: “I’m fine with two months, or one month—I just want to be together. If I can’t leave… if, as you say, I will die here… if I can only remain sleeping in that happy dream, I want to do that. Is that truly impossible? Can I not do that?”

Present Song-yi asks if he might possibly be a wanted criminal, though I love that her immediate response is “Well, it would be harboring a criminal so we couldn’t register a marriage so suddenly…”

Min-joon takes Song-yi to the university museum, where he reminds her of his initial warning not to trust him: “The man you so foolishly trust has brought you here to tell you of his secret.” Omo. The whole shebang?

Spooked by his serious face, Song-yi says he doesn’t have to tell her. But he persists, starting with the incident from twelve years ago: “I’m the one who saved you then.” And the reason he saved her was because she looked just like the girl he knew from 400 years ago, the owner of that hairpin in the display case.

She asks how he could know what a girl looked like from back then, and asks if he’s lived that long.

“Yes,” he confirms. “Four hundred years ago I came here from another world and could not return to my home. I lived here for four hundred years.”

Rattled, she says they ought to go home because he must still be ill. Using his mind, Min-joon shatters the glass case behind her and says, “You said you didn’t care who I was. This is the kind of person I am. Does it still not matter to you?”

EPILOGUE

In his interview/confession, Min-joon says, “You ask how I feel with my departure approaching? Well…” And then his face starts to crumple, and he chokes back his sobs. Oof.

COMMENTS

I’m sitting here trying to arrange thoughts to words in something of a thoughtful fashion, and the only words that actually come out are “Oh no.” Perhaps more accurately expressed as “OH NOOOOOOO.”

This is partly because we finally got to see Min-joon’s wistfulness in full force; we could see the glimpses here and there, but since we’d mostly seen the post-cold shoulder interactions from Song-yi’s perspective (albeit with the added knowledge of Min-joon’s reasons) we hadn’t gotten a clear look into Min-joon’s heart. And today not only did he express the full depth of his conflict, we also saw him smiling and fully in the moment of his happy dream, and I think that may have been the thing to kill me. Kim Soo-hyun crying always does me in—he is so in the moment, so anguished—but it was so much better(worse) having the tears preceded by the longing in his utterly mundane picture of complete happiness.

You could argue that Min-joon’s life on Earth has been composed of entirely mundane experiences, given the tiresome nature of living out a quiet life for 400 years, where his aim was to go unnoticed so that his death would be easily glossed over. But Min-joon has denied himself mundane pleasures to such an extent that his greatest wish is to live a limited lifespan with a loved one, just like ordinary folks, and Fate just won’t let him have any piece of that, whatever way you slice it. That bitch.

Is it too much to ask for that he get to have his two months before moving on or dying, whichever comes first? Even cancer dramas give that to their protags. YOU MUST NOT BE CRUELLER THAN A CANCER DRAMA. Just sayin’.

I loved the vision/dream/metaphor with Min-joon envisioning himself crossing the river to the afterlife, and Song-yi being the one to call him back. No hesitation, no qualms, just one look at her and he poofed right back to her side. I’m taking that as a very positive sign that she’ll be the cause of his eventual survival as well, even though I have no idea exactly how that would work. Details, piffle. Just make it happen! Because inasmuch as she is the one big catch to his initial plan (to lie low until he could return home), she has now become his one big reason for doing, well, everything. Squees for days.

A lot of times in rom-coms, hilarity turning to melo tears is about when I start to disengage, not because I dislike melo (everything in its time and place!), but because I was SO enjoying the hilarity that its decline is a noticeable loss. I’m grateful that this isn’t the case here, because while I miss the funny, I’m no less engaged now that the characters are dealing with the fallout of falling in love. It’s not that I think You From Another Star is the second coming of rom-coms or the best drama to ever grace the airwaves, but it has made me care about its characters to the extent that I’m not caring so much about genre rules as much as I just want them to all make it out alive.

And happy, of course. Happy is a given!

I read this recap backstage during a performance. The "don't be crueler than a cancer drama" line cracked me up! I was stifling my laughter (since it would have been very bad to have laughter coming from backstage at that time) with my hands literally covering my mouth. I wanted to share it over the headset with the eat of the tech crew, and it took me several tries before I could get through the line without laughing again. Of course then I had to explain about the prevelance of cancer dramas in Korean television and how Korean TV is different from American TV, but they did appreciate it. I determined to get someone from this play to watch this show.

That epilogue scene killed me >_<
His crying was so heartbreaking I had to quickly watch something happy to regain my sanity.

Something I'm curious about -totally off topic to be honest-, I don't know if I'm the only one who noticed this, but Song Yi has the same type of ring that Jae Kyung has right? Just different colors, one gold the other black. I wonder if it means something - other than the obvious that one is good the other is bad - but like why in the world do they have similar rings?

Back to the episode, I think the show is doing a good job of reeling us in and keeping us on edge without making it tiresome or repetitive. I'm curious as to what Min Joon has planned. Will he spend the next two months with Song Yi or will he run away after getting blamed for the murder? So excited for next week!

The video interviews may not have been made for her in the first place, but she may find them at some point. I have been thinking that he was not "left behind" but left to study the planet and its people. Several times, UFOs were spotted in the sky after he was already left there - so I think he was either knowingly left on a mission to study the planet or duped by his superiors into being "left behind".

The good thing about the mission idea is that there is probably more of an opportunity to go back and forth than we originally thought and it is not really a 400 year span.

The emotions in this episode were so beautifully written and portrayed - kudos to the writers and actors. One big gripe that was mentioned here also is DMJ breaking the glass at the museum - that was really bad writing - it was so out of character for him. He is so respectful of such things- he would not do something like that. He could have just disappeared and reappeared before her eyes to make his point and not have a potentially dangerous situation with her getting cut by flying glass, etc. That was dumb and lazy by the writers. Makes me worry what they will do as they get more and more tired with the live shooting etc. Many a great drama fell in the last episodes due to writer wipe out.

He broke the glass to scare her. "This is who I am" ... if she's scared and runs away ... then good. But if she stays, then it's love.

I suspect we'll have to survive 2-3 episodes of significant angst and separation ... the drama gods demand it. But in the end, she'll recognize that he's aways been there to save her and will come back to him.

We've got 8 episodes left ... way too much time, and there will be reversals ... I think 20 episodes is too long and I fear the comedy will be the first victim.

Gaaaahhh! No! lalala, I can't hear you! That would be so heartbreaking :(
Actually though, I disagree. Because who is filming/asking the questions? It doesn't make sense in the world of the drama that someone would be creating these video interviews- I always thought they were a meta/breaking the fourth wall thing where Min Joon is supposed to be talking to us as viewers.

All the episodes have been powerful and wonderful, and NOT FALL APART OR JUST FADE AWAY!
I loved everything about this except: 1. Min Joon's offer to Jae Hyuk 2. Lawyer Jang's increasing interference-I fear he, with his devotion to keeping Min Joon alive (whether Mon Joon wants it or not), and his jealousy of song Yi-he might become a major obstacle to their happiness in this drama. There's certainly enough episodes left for him to inflict a lot of pain on the two.
The happy dream and Min Joon weeping at the end-no words.

Lawyer Jang is not jealous. I don't even know why people would think that. The only reason he's pushing Song Yi away is for Min Joon and even Song Yi's sake. Because it would make the eventual separation even more painful than it already is. Because the pain from leaving ties on Earth would be so intense that the loneliness would probably overcome the rest of Min Joon's emotions. He doesn't want Min Joon to suffer. That is all. As a friend, he can see that moving on is the best road to recovery, but seeing as he now realises their love is so deep, he feels that he is unable to help Min Joon mend his heart.

Maybe he's losing his powers and feeling cold because that comet is getting closer? Maybe it somehow messes with his powers? How is he able to return home anyways because of the comet.

Also it REALLY bothers me that we don't know who he's talking to in his interview/confessions. I'm HOPING he found out a way to communicate with his parents/family/alien people back home. Bc the alternative would be that he's leaving and leaving Song Yi video diaries of him. Which would be too god damn DEPRESSING!!

Also I feel like we got trolled by the writer. Can't believe that Minjun actually witnessed Yura's accident and not Songyi's!! I knew there was a reason why both of them wore black. By I guess no matter who the vision was about Songyi still had the USB and mr evil would've gone after Songyi anyways.

At this point I, who always want dramas to make sense, just want a HAPPY ENDING FOR OUR COUPLE NO MATTER HOW ILLOGICAL THE PLOT BECOMES!!!!!!!

Was he trying to scare the crap out of her on purpose? What happened to “even for only one month, I want to be with her”? Ease into the truth gently. Stop making being an alien sound like a threat. His face and those crazy killer eyes -- Kim Soo Hyun would be perfect at playing a villain.

Min Joon’s happy dream makes me so sad. Climbing on top of her in bed! Jagi! Laughing wholeheartedly! Holding hands and spinning in circles! Making snow angels! Having a baby!! The writers can’t be that cruel to show us all this and not have it come true, right? RIGHT? I cried when Lawyer Jang watched Song Yi pace back and forth on the door camera. He meant it for her own good. That sight of Min Joon lying in his own blood was very shocking. I’m stunned Song Yi remained so calm and didn’t call 119 right away like the good Samaritans.

I am thankful we are finally seeing real emotions from our ice-cold alien. He cried three times this episode, including a whole epilogue of him crying. Kim Soo Hyun really is the best at crying scenes. I still remember his emotional breakdown when Yi Hwa died. I wonder why Song Yi can’t hone in on her memory of Min Joon saving her twelve years ago like Hwi Kyung did. She even had a closer view being in his arms at the time.

Thanks for the recap, javabeans!

At this point I don't even care if Minjoon dies in the end or have to return to the space. I just want them have their 2 months spent in the utmost domestic bliss and that's that.

Kim Soohyun could cry me into anything, seriously. Take my house, take my life, take my everything, Sire, anything to make you stop crying because you break hearts when you do, darlin.

But i'm so happy that Song yo is finally in the know of Minjoon's true where-from-abouts and everything. Because it's going to be soooo compelling to watch her admitting that she loves Minjoon, lawyer, manager, lifesaver, creep, alien and all. Yes, love triumphs all! Please?

Just not so sure I'm prepared to wait for a week for her reaction. Hopefully when I get to do so they'll hit 30% in ratings hahaha just saying.

PS : Hyorin's song is seriously too addictive! I've been replaying it nonstop. And did anyone notice the new song with "i love you i need you" lyrics they've been playing through ep 11-12? It sounds just as good! Between the drama, the leads, and the soundtrack, I'm just one happy fangirl sandwiched in between too much awesomeness.

In Dramafever, this drama is classified as melodrama instead of romantic comedy which peeves me to no end.

I love it so much that the only way for this to end is happily. Don't know how they will manage it BUT THEY MUST. I don't accept anything else.

I care for this couple much more than the master's sun or the heirs. It could entirely be because kim soo hyun. I don't know. They just have to end up happily forever together.

Yeah, I know....I don't know why they would classify it as Melodrama when it OBVIOUSLY should have been Romantic Comedy. God, there's more comedy here than the last 30 Rom-Com I've watched!!! Besides, we WANT, NEED, HAVE TO HAVE a HAPPY, FULLFILLED ENDING BECAUSE WE CARE TOO DAMN MUCH ABOUT THE CHARACTERS to have it any other way. I want the ending to be just like The Greatest Love, or Secret Garden, or Queen In Hyun's Man...if not BETTER!!!!! Please drama-god, I want to re-watch this drama over and over throughout my life, but I can't do that with an angst-ridden heartbroken ending...I just can't!

After watching the first episode, I was pretty sure there was going to be melodrama elements in this show, so I am not surprised that they classified it as such.

of course, there are also the romantic comedy bits like Songyi's antics etc, I love rom-com, but I also love the angst that comes with melos (as long as they have happy endings though)!

Oh dear. I don't know why I did not feel the emotion throughout this episode as I was expecting… I blame it on the long wait each week….sigh, this is why I usually wait till the end and watch everything in one go….I did feel for MJ when he broke down, but surprisingly, it was seeing Jang Pyun crying that took me over the edge. He is so sincere in his affection for MJ. Loved the realtor cameo…Jung Eun Pyo is a cute little ajusshi.
I loved SY this episode… for some reason, episode 10s epilogue with the crazy acting was a little over the top for me..and kind of turned me off the character a little but then 11 and 12 has her being vulnerable and dignified (with Se Mi, woohoo) as well as desperately in love and I fell in love with the character all over again.
I hope 13 and 14 show her getting used to the idea of being in love with an alien and has him melting towards her because I am getting annoyed with how mean he is to her. I understand why he is like that, but I still feel hurt for her (which tells me the acting on both sides is spot on by the way). I want the happy MJ in the dream to come back out… the old MJ from yesteryear, 1609 when he was still a newbie to this world…this cynical front is legit getting to me...

I think MJ can't really do anything about his future sight. After all, the future sight he saw still happening no matter what.

Like the falling into the sea incident, it's not SY future that he saw, but it's Han Yu Ra's.

and when he get hit and run by JK, he can't provide that to be happened even he already got the sight.

Fate ._.

Read this sub with Ed Sheeran's "I See Fire" playing in the background. If you're feeling emo today, I recommend it.

I LOVE the entire "happy dream" sequence. It was a beautiful and poignant dream of what could have been versus their current reality of what could never be.

And when Min-joon cried to Lawyer Jang about wanting to spend his last moments with Song-yi regardless of the consequences? Ack! It just about broke my heart.

I heart you, Show. SO. MUCH. Even when you're breaking my heart into itty-bitty pieces.

awesome side characters. no, they are not side, they are quite equals. Lawyer Jang I will give you a medal. Many medals, so you look like a Soviet veteran, chest all covered in them.
Bok-Ja scared me for a moment although it was funny, but omg you are not serious! I was mortified! yes, Hwi Kyung, at least he is legal. but still.... whoever walks in, really? all the men around Song-Yi ( ALL of them?????) omg that woman. crazy ajumma.
Min Joon aww..... I cried my guts out when I left Lapland, just because.... but it in no way compares.... "long distance relationship" bhwahaha oh you girl, you have no idea. well you do soon.

Love that with every drama the whole range of characters becomes better. dramas certainly are evolving. I like the secondary characters perhaps even better than Min Joon.

If I recall correctly, some Joseon people in tracksuits travelled some 400 years to this time range too... A la rooftop prince...

this drama really makes me laugh over Song Yi's cuteness and craziness, makes me cry over Lawyer Jang and Min Joon's long friendship... And that one last scene really breaks my heart omg if this drama really ends the sad way I'm gonna lose my faith on other dramas... seriously the happy dream Min Joon had look like a sign that it won't end well between them! I really really hope this drama will have a happy ending! I mean I've been enjoying this drama since the first episode and if someday I rewatch this drama again I don't wanna cry over the fact that our Song Yi and Min Joon aren't together in the end >_<

I have even taken to always (with a completed drama)-watch the end first. I don't like spoilers, but damn! if I'm going to invest hours/days of angst and emotion in a drama just to have it peter out or go bad at the end. I hate the leukemia/cancer/handshake at the airport/study abroad/shot/hit by truck endings. So I will save myself whenever possible.
Watching a new ongoing drama like this one is another story-I will live dangerously, even though I tell myself over and over-Don't Do It!-Wait until it's finished!
But I can't.

Hi! I'm not usually adding comments here, but I'm curious, does anyone else notice some similarities of the story to the Twilight Movie? Like the saving scene from the truck that is coming, Edward saved Bella the same way. Also, Min Joon keeps on telling Song Yi to not trust him, like Edward keeps on telling Bella. And the last part where Min Joon shows his powers to Song Yi and ask if she still doesn't care, Edward asked the same thing to Bella. I also wonder if the character 'Edward' in the book they used to read is a hint of the adaptation of the love story in Twilight. Just a thought.

I'm getting a lot of the parody scenes because I've watched a lot of dramas and movies. But I'm also missing a lot because I've missed some of the more popular dramas, because I haven't been interested in watching them.
For instance-I see people talking about scene parodies from Secret Garden, but I won't watch that-I saw parody here from Winter Sonata, Goong Palace, Notting Hill, Heirs, Flower Boy Next Door, A Love To Kill, Full House, My Sassy Girl, and many more-

I feel that he's trying to give her the impression that he's this cold crazy dangerous being so she won't go stirring things up when he does his scapegoat thing for Jae Kyung. Because I'm sure there are far gentler ways to break the news to her than shattering a large glass barrier. You know, like teleporting the both of them into the middle of a field of blooming flowers.

I think you're probably right about the "I'm a scary monster" thing that Min Joon has been planning and it does worry me a bit that he's going to take all the blame. Too much noble idiocy. However, seeing as Song Yi is ready to accept him as a murderer I'm going to predict that she'll defend him in any way she can. (Though I doubt she ACTUALLY believes he's a criminal of some sort. I mean, would she really believe that he killed Yura? She may not be the most intelligent being on the planet, but I'm sure she at least knows that there was no reason for him to do so. Morever, she knows that those two didn't even know eachother.) I'd hate it if they dragged on the misunderstanding for a couple of episodes - her feeling betrayed and fearful does not shout 'great drama' to me. If he does end up confessing for Jae Kyung's crimes, I hope Song doesn't believe it.

Does anyone else appreciate the relationship between MJ and Lawyer Jang as much as I do. I think it's a beautiful friend/protector relationship the writer has included in the drama. I love love the trust they have in and of each other, and that is so evident in this ep where Lawyer Jang sat and cried with MJ at the bed. and seriously, what would MJ do without such a friend...
Cannot wait for the next ep. This drama rocks!

Another person worth mentioning is Semi -- She is really very vicious and vindictive, she now wants Song Yi to take the spot that she was willing to stay in for 15 years. I hope in view of the words before, if any one approaches Song Yi with playing a secondary role to Semi, she really gives them a tongue lashing and let them know that there is no way she will be doing that, can you imagine that Semi hates Song Yi so much that she wants to humiliate her like that . And the guy who worked for Song Yi, is fully aware of what she is doing. She harbored resentment for 15 years, not willing to step out on her own for something that she wanted, but wants to cry victim now that it conveniently falls in her lap.

I'm imagining Song Yi taking it and proving that she's a good actress by doing well as a second lead. If she does take the role, then the situation where Se Mi was previously in would be another realization for her much the same as what she said to Hui Kyeung about getting heartbroken. "Ah, so this is what it feels like." It doesn't mean, though, that she'll take the crap thrown at her just because she gets to feel firsthand how it is.

This episode might just be my favourite yet. That entire dream sequence had me bawling like a baby. And don't even get me started on the epilogue. I'm genuinely afraid for Hwi-kyung's life now. Will his brother go as far as killing his own blood? I have a theory that Hwi-kyung was probably adopted, I mean Jae-kyung bears a remarkable resemblance to his parents especially his mom but Hwi-kyung looks nothing like either of his parents. When Se-mi found out that Song-yi was in danger a look passed on her face, I interpreted it as probably reluctant worry for her ex-best friend and maybe a little guilt, though I don't know what she might be feeling guilty about. This show is awesome, the epilogue was the first full emotion Min-joon has shown in this drama and it had me bawling so hard. Next week can't come soon enough. And also, he told her. Was he trying to scare her away by being all glass breaky and what not. I wanna see Song-yi's reaction to that. This show won't be the death of me.

despite it's a heart wrenching episode, it still manages to bring smile to my face.

I love SY response to SM. She keeps her pride up when it comes to others despite what she feels inside. She keeps her curiosity under wrap in front of SM. Kudo, SY! That's my girl

The happy dream despite it's only a dream but it feels good to see MJ happy over the simple things in life and I wish the writer will bring that to real life. It would be too mean isn't it for living 400 years and at the end he can't seem to have those things?

I understand lawyer Jang's concern but can MJ be happy even if it's only for the short period of 2 months? Nobody knows what the future might lead.. and neither knowing whether tomorrow we are still breathing or not..
the least MJ could do is seize the moment..the love that he has now for SY even it's just for 2 months.. it's still worth it

Well, logical always is best for the narrative strength of the show. I think the show has succeeded in being logical thus far, so I hope it will be able to do that till the end. I think "My Girlfriend is a Gumiho" managed to ground their happy ending coherently with the eclipse and "the heavens going crazy", so I think YFAS will be able to do the same. I feel like the writing is in good hands so I have high expectations for the next 8 episodes.

All that said, if I was forced to make a choice, I will sacrifice logic any day so I can see Do Min-joon's dream come true at the end.

I love how the drama is on a fast pace. Ever since I started watching this, I had all these sort of thoughts on how this drama would end up. Initially, I thought that "this drama is going to end sad." Practically, everyone must have thought so, right? But after seeing Do Minjoon breakdown in this episode, I couldn't help but think, "Please give us a happy ending!!!"

This episode was like a bomb, dropping every emotions and revelations the audience had been waiting for. I must commend how great Kim Soohyun is. I was hardly affected with every words he uttered while tearing up so badly. He really, really is a good actor.. I can't help but give in, especially on the epilogue part. Songyi on the other hand was also struggling with her feelings. I really feel bad for the both of them. Songyi knows that Minjoon likes her but she just couldn't get a confirmation. Although I like how she is experiencing those heartaches cos it's making her a better woman.

Even though, this episode has still glimpses of humorous scenes, sadness overwhelmed me. This episode is just so heartbreaking....

Anyways, I can't help but feel grateful for everyone who's behind this production. From the casts, staffs, crews, writer, PDs, etc. Thank you for giving us such a wonderful drama!!! I swear, this drama is the best I had so far. I never felt this impatient waiting for the next episode.

So many questions, but the most diring ones are concerning the plotline/rules. I want to understand everything! 1)Why don't his powers work? The argumentation and the explaination given by the show itself is that it is because he is leaving. But that implies, that his powers are somehow tied to the planet Earth. Does that mean, he didn't have any powers back home? That it is not his species' powers anyway? But when does that say? There was a scene in the first couple episodes (2 or 3), in which his fellow alien comrades were floating while collecting samples in the forrest. I mean, that shows that their species could float right? So, powers. 2) Even under the pretense that his powers are tied to this planet (Earth), how could the body suddently decide it is going to get weak? it is not like his body can shut down just because he plans in his mind to leave in 3 months. Clearly this is not psychological but physical. But i just wrap my mind around how him going home is weakening him? He is going home with that comet, right? So does that mean, the comet is diminishing his powers?

it is a fantasy it doesn´t need to be logical. fairy tales can´t survive in modern world I suppose. modern people demand logical explanations. they won´t just accept "fantasy" per se

Required fields are marked *

That's so wrong. Fantasy DOES need to be logical- internally consistent. Even if the rules are that he's a superpowerful/magical being to which the laws of the universe don't apply, circumventing natural logic, that's still a premise. If he suddenly has limitations or there's one particular instance where his powers don't work, there needs to be a good reason, otherwise the internal "logic" is violated. People need consistency in order to care about the characters and story. It's exactly the same as character consistency- people hate it when people get lobotomies and go all makjang because it doesn't make internal sense and takes away the feeling of being in a secondary reality.

0

Required fields are marked *

It basically means that he's not from our world. He belongs somewhere else. His body is not accustomed to the atmospheric conditions in the Earth. His body has been enduring the changes (since he has powers and can go beyond what a normal human can do) but now it's taking it's toll on him. He's getting weaker the more he stays. At first I thought, well he can miss the comet and just stay with Song Yi for the rest of her life. However, that option has been eliminated in this episode because now we've been told that his body's limit is nearing and he HAS to go.

[sigh] I just love this show. Our OTP is the cutest ever. I DIED when they went ice fishing and she was all exuberant puppy and he was all calm sedate old man. I could watch that scene over and over again.

I adore the second lead and his grudging acceptance of his unrequited love.

A “BooYa” to Song-yi for the set-down she delivered to Se-mi about friendship, jealousy and motives.

Little brother, Yoon-jae, is a great straight man foil to his sisters perplexing behavior. E.g. plastering herself to the apartments common wall in an attempt to eavesdrop on Min-joon’s conversation. Or him deciding to change his ways by studying harder so he does not end up like her. Lol

Evil big brother, Jae-kyung, is doing a bang-up job being relentlessly psycho. Not even a touch of human warmth in there. Actually I really hope he has some warmth for his little brother. With 8 episodes left will we learn why his is such a sick [insert invective here]?
I think his killing spree started with his big brother, but that is just my theory.

Lawyer Jang is really stepping up as loyal friend. What an awesome guy to have in your corner when you are light-years from home.

When Min-joon had his dream of living the rest of his live with Song-yi, everything about that dream was sweet but I especially loved the ice skating scene.

I was trying to figure out why Kim Soo Hyun breaking down in the epilogue hurt so much more than I was used to with that boy (his tears=my tears no matter what), and I think you accurately said it in your comments: it's because we finally get to see Do Min Joon so happy, with such a simple wish (it's not like he wants to bring her back to his planet or anything--he just wants really badly to grow old with Song Yi), that to then see him cry afterward broke my heart into a bajillion pieces. It's not fair!

I described this drama to a friend of mine as CUTE CUTE CUTE MURDER MURDER MURDER. These days I think it's just out to murder my soul. Crossing my fingers for a happy ending! PLEASE! Kim Soo Hyun cannot be sad anymore, I can't take it!
