Drama viewership ratings for the week of Sep. 17-23, 2018

Fall is finally here, folks! Meaning it’s time to say goodbye to the summer shows and gear up for the next season. And with this week’s gloomy numbers, it looks like viewers are already craving something new. For Mondays and Tuesdays, front-runner Thirty But Seventeen ended with a series high of 11.0 percent, while most of its competition stayed below the 3.0 percent mark.

Over on Wednesdays and Thursdays, time travel romance Familiar Wife kept its first place standing, though it never did make it into double digits. Nevertheless, I’d say it was a successful drama comeback for Han Ji-min, as well as her onscreen hubby Ji Sung.

Mr. Sunshine was pre-empted, broadcasting a special episode instead. It will air its finale next week, which is sure to end with yet another bang (pun fully intended). Meanwhile, UEE’s weekend drama My Only Ally easily slipped into 20 percent territory after a strong premiere last week. Only time will tell how the other newcomers will fare.

I really liked Beans of Wisdom, and I miss it too, but I guess it was a rather labor-intensive feature (people had to read ALL THOSE COMMENTS) and they probably decided that it wasn't worth with the new site where Beanies can vote with their thumbs.

Are you only going to cover shows in the 'Currently Airing' section? I think it would be nice to cover shows like Big Forest and Devilish Joy.

And I was typing this, I realised ratings for The Guest aren't there as well!

(Still, thank you for bringing back this feature! I wonder where did HeadsNo2 go and whether DB will make any official announcement on his / her whereabouts.)

I am ecstatic (tells you how easy I am to please) that RATINGS REPORT is back! *applause*
Re @headsno2. Because of a recommendation from my pal @pakalanapikake I began (let's call it a very late summer rerun) to watch the (2007--8 episode) saeguk CONSPIRACY IN THE COURT and simultaneously follow along with the great episode recaps provided by HeadsNo2 written between Nov. 2012 and Mar. 2013. I am up to episode 4 and enjoying the drama and recaps immensely. With this particular drama the recaps are almost a necessity along with an English dictionary. The subtitler (of the Director's cut) seems to have had a ball translating the Korean dialogue into archaic English. At least it is archaic to me.
All this to say that HeadsNo2 did a great job recapping CITC.

Thanks for reminding me to add that to my list. I started it once but it was before Heads recapped it, and I didn't have enough mental energy to figure out the archaic English subs. Mr X got a little carried away there...

@marcusnyc20 Bong-soo,

I'm so glad you're enjoying both CONSPIRACY IN THE COURT and HeadsNo2's recaps for it. It is a terrific production. With only 8 episodes, it blows away most other dramas, which end up feeling bloated in comparison. CITC is lean and mean, in the best dramatic sense. ;-)

I am pleased that YOUR HONOR notwithstanding its shaky start and drawbacks held on to its viewers for its entire run. Yoon Shi-yoon and Lee Yoo-young had great chemistry. Like THIRTY BUT SEVENTEEN it was also squeezed down to 32 episodes but unlike 30B17 the ending left a lot to be desired.
I think YH needed more time.

I agree. Although having partial resolutions has its perks. It's currently sitting on top for a petition for shows audiences want a Season 2 for. 😂. Is there some reason FW is reported here as number 1 for Wed/Thu? YH seems to have higher ratings in the chart above?

Familiar Wife is on a cable network, which has a smaller audience. So its 6.7 rating is actually considered higher in this case. :)

Probably but I look at figures and so far all the reports on news articles go by numbers as well. But yes for sure FW being on cable with those numbers are impressive even if numerically it is lower.

Missed this future so much...Quite sad that Lovely Horibly does so bad as i might the minority that actually likes the show. But i know it could do much better if they had left the first idea about Ghost Mom being the main one in the curse stuff rather that the ex girlfriend ghost addition that makes it more cliche. On the other hand i'm really happy for the cast of Thirty But Seventeen because it was such a fluffy drama that i adored.

The ratings for MBC are so sad during the week and KBS hasn't been much better this round. I hope the next round of dramas can perk things up, especially for MBC as I'm looking forward to both of their upcoming dramas.

I'm so happy Familiar Wife had a successful run.

Woo hoo! I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the familiar Ratings Report graphic!

I've been so grateful and happy to watch DB make a comeback after that scary period of austerity-- having the Rating Report once again makes me breathe a big sigh of relief (and wag my tail). Welcome back and thank you, @sailorjumun! It's been wonderful to have the minions coming back into the fold-- kudos to all of you for hanging in there!

It's great to be able to see the ratings, but another reason that I'm psyched that the Ratings Report is back is because it gives us another opportunity to congregate as a community-- it's like a virtual water cooler or campfire. I like having the ritual of the Open Thread on Friday, What We're Watching on Saturday, and the Ratings Report on Sunday.

Familiar Wife never made it into double digits because it aired on tvN. Even What's Wrong With Secretary Kim on tvN, which at least had buzz, didn't break double digits. 100 Days My Prince's ratings are remarkable. I'm so happy to see the love for Thirty But Seventeen. Now the big question is if Mr. Sunshine will beat Reply 1988's record next week.

3

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I think the only tvN dramas that have made it into double digits are Reply 1988, Goblin, Mr. Sunshine and Prison Playbook? Ratings of 6-8% are good for cable and would basically be equivalent to double digits on the public broadcasters, I think.

I predict Mr. Sunshine will beat the record.

"Goblin went out with a bang for tvN, reportedly breaking ratings records for the cable network that were previously held by Answer Me 1988’s finale just a year ago (at 19.6%). All of the news outlets are reporting 20.5% ratings for the finale, though that’s a combined number across multiple platforms, while the official Nielsen rating is 18.68%. It makes the whole record-breaking thing a little confusing, but in any case, I think it’s safe to call the show a big monster hit for tvN"

1. She only addressed it, but not cleared the isue.

2. She even misquoted rating for Reply 1988 which was actually 18.8%. (No confusion)

2. Wikipedia is not trustworthy medium.

3. The 20.5% rating is including IPTV.

4. Nielsen korea website has problem in their rating reports before that excluding IPTV, so it differs from Naver, Daum and news outlet reports. But now, it reports the same figure.

1

I bet Mr. Sunshine will beat Reply 1988's record too. Goblin couldn't do it, but Mr. Sunshine is easily Kim Eun Sook's best drama.

30But17 was over 10% and Your Honour was heading that way. I have no idea why these shows were cut from 20 to 16. At least with 30But17 they didn't really have enough plot for 20 but Your Honour definitely did and the show suffered for it. The only explanation I can think of is that they cut due to the pre-emptions - but couldn't they see those pre-emptions coming when they ordered the shows? Ergh, the whole thing's a mystery to me.

I mentioned in another post that (in my short time in kdrama world) I have seen a drama have episodes cut (A BEAUTIFUL MIND) and a drama have episodes added (DEFENDANT) but I can't remember a drama have its episode count squeezed from 40/20 to 32/16. We had two in one week: 30B17 and YH.
Interesting times. Both dramas were produced by SBS so the powers to be there made the decision to cut episodes.

Well, SBS were the ones who gave us the Reunited Worlds debacle where they kept the writers in limbo on how many episodes they were writing for until they suddenly settled on 20. So the show circled the drain for episode after episode, gave us a last-minute antagonist and then wrapped everything up without resolving half their subplots.

@marcusnyc20 Bong-soo,

I didn't realize that YOUR HONOR got chopped off. Well that explains why the ending went ker-thunk. Drat! Didn't the Powers Who Be know there were going to be preemptions for the Asian Games, etc.? This is the same thing that happened to THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK HYANG during the Sochi Winter Olympics -- as if four years' notice were not enough warning. Sheesh.

THIRTY BUT SEVENTEEN felt to me as if Auntie's subplot were not resolved well, either, but overall, there was not as much disruption as with YOUR HONOR.

Hi @pakalanapikake. The episode reduction was unfortunate for both dramas but more so for YH. A couple of final thoughts.
1. 30B17. The plot lines were such that over the course of 2-3 episodes the drama could be brought to a coherent conclusion as was shown. I agree with you about Auntie's situation not being fully resolved. I found it interesting that the cause of Uncle's death was cirrhosis. Public service announcement?
2. YH. This drama was unusual to say the least. It was improving week by week. There was a continuity to it so that if it was allowed to a natural conclusion I think it would have looked organic if you follow me. That was not allowed to happen so we got the ending that we did.
I think everybody connected with YH including YSY, LYY, the Writer, the PD and crew worked very hard on YH. Kudos to them all.

I agree with you, @marcusnyc20 Bong-soo. YOUR HONOR had been proceeding nicely and then suddenly got the axe. Once the real Soo-ho was back on screen, I could appreciate the fine job Yoon Si-yoon has been doing all along. Losing two hours was such a disservice when the resolution was within reach. While Ji-yeon unni's arc felt a bit deus ex-machina, it was actually nicely done. Sometimes people fall out of each other's lives, but the course of time heals wounds, and reconciliation becomes possible. I really liked how that was handled.

I guess that SBS ultimately decided to diss Kang-ho, who never got no respect from the beginning. Too bad, because I found YOUR HONOR to be an engaging drama after it got over the initial hiccups.

I'll have to get the rest of my thoughts off my chest over at http://www.dramabeans.com/2018/07/yoon-shi-yoon-holds-the-scales-of-justice-in-sbss-your-honor/.

(But first, have to watch the next episode of 100 DAYS MY PRINCE.)

1

Hey @pakalanapikake you may be onto something. You wrote:

I guess that SBS ultimately decided to diss Kang-ho, who never got no respect from the beginning.

I now imagine (tongue firmly in cheek, please!) a scenario where maybe some prosecution service bigwigs teamed up with some legal establishment heavyweights to put pressures on TV executives to pull the plug on YH saying, "this guy Judge Han, whoever he is, is killing us, he's gotta go". Next thing we see is YOUR HONOR-Final Episode! (Maybe it went down something like that, who knows--only in kdrama land.)

1

I wonder the same thing - don't they know which episodes might be pre-empted for sports or holidays? It seems that those things would be easy to predict.

I just wish it had been given a little more time to bring the various plot lines together. Nevertheless Yoon Shi-yoon and Lee Yoo-young made a great team. I am going to miss seeing Judge Han (Kang-ho) hunched over the bench with tie askew barking out something like, "Prosecutor, listen up!"
