56th Baeksang Art Awards

Lee Byung-heon, Jeon Do-yeon, Kim Hee-ae, Kang Haneul

Better late than never! The 56th annual Baeksang Arts Awards took place on June 5, following a month-long delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Keeping in mind that the pandemic is far from over, the ceremony took place under social distancing measures, with attendees seated in chairs spaced apart from each other.

The Baeksang Awards are notable for their big tent approach to nominations, which means that shows and actors are recognized regardless of which broadcaster a drama aired on. Marking their third year as an emcee trio, Shin Dong-yup, Suzy, and Park Bo-gum hosted once again (though this is now Suzy’s fifth consecutive year hosting).

A socially distanced ceremony

When the Camellia Blooms won the Daesang for TV, with Bong Joon-ho getting the film Daesang for Parasite. The cast of Camellia was on hand to celebrate their win, while Parasite’s producer, Kwak Shin-ae, accepted the Daesang in his stead (and let us know that Bong Joon-ho’s on an extended hiatus at the moment).

Kim Hee-ae was awarded the top acting nod for her role in A Couple’s World with Kang Haneul picking up best actor for his part in When the Camellia Blooms. Camellia was the biggest winner of the night in the TV section as they grabbed four awards in total. The underdog sports drama bested some stiff competition (When the Camellia Blooms, Crash Landing on You, Kingdom, and Hyena) and came out on top to scoop best drama.

Clockwise from l-r, Jung Yumi, Gong Hyo-jin, Jeon Do-yeon

In the film section, Lee Byung-heon won best actor for his work in the political thriller, The Man Standing Next. Jeon Do-yeon scooped best actress Birthday, where she portrayed a grieving mother who lost her child in the Sewol Ferry tragedy. It was pretty easy to predict big wins for Parasite, and they managed to win the most awards in the film section: the Daesang, best film, and best new actor (won by Park Myung-hoon).

My expectations are always low for the fashion at awards shows, but this year was especially disappointing. There were more misses and hits, with everyone fighting their own hotness with boring or strange fashion choices. Even Kim Hye-soo, whose sartorial tastes I normally love, confused me with her look this year. Her Hyena costar, Joo Ji-hoon, can usually be relied on for an interesting fashion statement, but this year he opted for understated bordering on boring (though I did like the concept hanbok-inspired suit jacket, it made him look a little barrel-esque). I do wonder if this was an intentional dressing down by some of the stars, given current events.

Your winners are…

Stove League deserved the award some are saying why the drama won. For me only those who watched the drama will know why it was one of the best. It's one of the sports drama that I watched from beginning until the end and i'm not into sports drama at all. Nam Goong MIn and the team did a great job in making me invested in the drama. The story feels like we are watching the real life of a Team and GM. Recommended Drama

I want to dig down a bit into the TV SECTION and give a shout out and congratulations to Oh Jung-se for receiving the award for Supporting Actor in WHEN THE CAMELLIA BLOOMS for his portrayal of No Gyu-tae who in the recaps received from our pal @pakalanapikake the spot on monikers of ‘Lord No’ and ‘ Peanut Moocher’. He portrayed such a unlikable character beautifully.

@marcusnyc20

That was the thing with Camellia. It was a drama that also allowed so many of the non-leads to shine.

No Gyu-tae (Lord No) was brilliant and Yum Hye-Ran (Lord No's wife) always shines in her roles, but Son Dam-Bi (as Hyang-Mi) and the young Kim Kang-Hoon (Pil-Gu) also shook me.

It was more than just the writing. The supporting actor's stylistic choices and some of their comic timing was just golden. For me, that @pakalanapikake was able to foresee Hyang-Mi's tragic arc at episode 04 (without any real story hints) shows how well crafted the performances were.

I can see what Stroopwafel means about the fashion (if you can call it that). After seeing IU dressed so fabulously last year in HOTEL DEL LUNA the sight of her in that dress was honestly shocking. Whoever dressed her for this awards show committed a true fashion crime- and we are talking felony charges here.

But that was nothing compared to Jo Yeo-jung’s dress and hair-style. It is as if her dresser wanted to make her look like Aunty Em from THE WIZARD OF OZ.

And was it really smart to put Suzy in a dress that would make her look anorexic?

OK, all snark aside now, I was really glad to see that STOVE LEAGUE received the Best Drama award. It was well deserved. For anyone who has not seen it- go watch it. You will not be disappointed.

And usually JYJ dresses well, what a shame!

IU's dress is an opportunity missed - I guess it's Hanbok inspired with those side pleats and the beautiful silver regal pattern but what the heck with that blacks stripes across the top?! Something lighter with a demure design will make an enchanting difference.

My best dress award goes to the queen Kim Hee Ae, matching well with her top gong.

I do not pretend to be a fashion expert but IU's dress reminded me of a waffle cone turned upside down and sprayed with silver pint. As if the idea was to hide the fact that she is in fact quite lovely.

Yeah... I'm also puzzle why they dressed relatively plainly in award show compared to drama. Is there societal context that I'm not aware of as non korean?

Totally agree about IU.
She could have worn anything and look wonderful but not. Not this one. It looks cheap. To say the least. (I’m literary translating from Spanish, I hope it’s understood).

These award shows remind me of the days I would watch the Prom Grand March on local cable channel and comment with lots of snark and sarcasm on poor dress choices (those poor teens). Do I care about the actual awards? No, but I still enjoy judging the dress choices.

I don't know why, but the fashion choices at the Korean drama/ film awards are almost always disappointing. The actors and actresses look much better in their works...

They need to learn from their other Asian counterparts: Chinese and Indian stars dress so glamorous and cutting edge. Is it because these stars are afraid to be called names for wearing over the top fashion? When Han Hye Jin wore a backless dress, she was praised. When Honey Lee wore that over the shoulder pink dress last yr, she got some looks online. So boring, bland, and colorless their looks are. Snooze fest zzzZZZ....

Park Bo Gum standing next to a Suzy in heels and he looked like a giant to me for the very first time thst I actually had to Google his height— he’s actually 182CM (6 feet), which is actually pretty tall 👌🏻👌🏻

I agree, I think that the toned down fashion may be in part to be more low key, considering the global circumstances at the present moment

So happy for Kim Bora and "House of Hummingbird❤️." Indie films need more recognition.
New Director: Kim Do-young (Kim Ji-young: Born 1982)👍🏽.
Top Excellence, Actress: Jeon Do-yeon (Birthday) 👍🏽.

Kim Hee-ae was a given. I hope she'll get more. It's too bad there is no separate awards for cable shows.

Why is JYJ dressed like she's in a cult? Also I'm actually not mad at the shape of the skirt of IU's dress. It's vaguely interesting (at least for Baeksang standards), but then every other element- the fabric, the neckline, the tiny twin belts... yikes. You know you've got a problem when the best dressed person is the penguin(?) mascot in the back of the group photo.

Besides Ong Seong-wu, none of the New Actor nominees are 'new actors.' The nominations are based on breakout performances.

Park Myung-hoon won in the film section, yet he's been acting since 2015.

I mean, I get that it is usually based more on actors' breakout performances, but AHS already HAD his breakout performance, like, two years ago, in Still 17.
Then again, I'm also a little put out because OSW's performance was a lot stronger, imo 🤷

I hope you do watch all 5 performances of all 5 nominees. Guaranteed I only watched AHS in Dr. Kim 2, but when I saw the clips of all nominees I was sure AHS would win, and he did. Regardless of how he got into that category, I personally thought his performance is better than the other 4. And that just based on the very short clips during the ceremony. But yes, personal preference is indeed personal.

I got about halfway through Camelia and Romantic Doctor, and was kind of neutral about AHS, tbh. Like, I thought he was solid, and he's definitely come a long way, but I just found OSW a lot more compelling. I'm not surprised AHS won either, though, especially considering his popularity.

He didn't get any nomination in Baeksang Award yet this is his first time I think that's why he is considered a new actor in this category.

I've become ok with Kang Haneul winning, even though I love him and Park Seo Joon equally and intensely lol. His character in WTCB was honestly more dynamic and broader in range that Saeroyi in IC imo. Not saying that Park Seo Joon didn't knock it out of the park with Saeroyi (omg he gutted me), but I think the nature of the characters gave Kang Haneul a better edge.

Like in my mind, Saeroyi was a character with moments of great intensity spaced out with him keeping steady in his values, while Yongsik was gunning it the entire time.

I am so happy that Stove League won for Best drama. It really is. The acting, the direction, the writing and the execution is spot on. Never knew i would get attached to a sports drama and that too the drama focusing more on the managerial of the team. It was a great surprise.

I love that Kim Hee-Ae won the best actress from the tv side. What a phenomenal actress she is. She deserves it. All the actors in that Couple's World deserve the award. What a great team in that drama.

Seeing my handsome Hyunbin once again makes me soooo happy. Son ye Jin is also looking very lovely. I always knew these two are going to win the couple awards. The chemistry is still there. See the last picture is enough proof of it. I think there really might be something between them. Who knows?

My favourite dressed people are Sohn Yeh Jin and Seo Ji Hye.
Suzy looks so anorexic and very sick in that white dress.

Winner of the night When The Camellia Blooms. I'm happy for Stove League getting the Best drama award. Some people will say why they won it when they don't watch the drama. For me they deserved it. I'm not into Sports Drama and I usually skipped those kind of Genre and to say that the sports involved is Baseball that I don't even know the rules of the game. But Nam Goongmin and the team made me love the drama their portrayal of the characters and the character development made me feel like I'm watching a real life documentary of a team, how they struggled , the pain of Trading players and how to draft a good player. The teamwork and trust that needed so that their team will become the best in the future. This drama is highly recommended. Hope they'll do season 2 I'm definitely watching it and will cheer for them :D
