Top 10 favorite dramas of all time

javabeans: And here we are, with the last of our 10th-anniversary Top 10 lists! Our initial goal in doing these Top 10’s was to celebrate our 10th birthday, and while we didn’t quite make all 10 fit into our birthday month, better late than never?

girlfriday: Since we’re 10 years old all year long, I think it counts!

javabeans: We do intend to keep writing Top 10 lists, but this puts an end to our Anniversary 10 Top 10’s for the time being.

girlfriday: Our last list is, appropriately, Top 10 favorite dramas of all time.

javabeans: We opened this one up to the rest of our staff, and it was fascinating to see not only which titles everyone picked, but also their reasoning for going that way. One person might have been influenced most by character, another by plot, another by emotional response.

girlfriday: I had a lot of fun reading everyone’s lists, so we hope you do too!

There are great dramas that can be excellent fun while watching, but they don’t make my all-time favorites list without this one crucial element: feeling that perfect (or close-to-perfect) sense of satisfaction at the end. These are the dramas that make me sigh in contentment, feel that every minute was worth it, and leave a warm glow for years to come.

1. Shut Up: Flower Boy Band: Captures the turmoil of adolescence, with bromance and rock music.

2. Princess’s Man: One of the fiercest, most resourceful heroines around. Thrilling and romantic.

3. Delightful Girl Chun-hyang: A sentimental favorite! Funny, sweet, and satisfying.

4. Soulmate: Witty, refreshing take on modern love with a breezy attitude.

5. Joseon X-Files: Smartly written, mind-bending plot twists, wryly funny, and unexpectedly moving.

6. Return of Iljimae: Achingly poignant, beautiful, wistful. Not one false step.

7. Gaksital: Epic. Intense. It’ll shred you up and stick with you for ages.

8. Dal Ja’s Spring: Relatable heroine, sweet romance, uplifting take on modern careers and friendships.

9. Story of a Man: Sometimes dark, sometimes zippy fun—capers, bromance, and a satisfyingly matched hero-villain standoff.

10. This Week, My Wife Will Have an Affair: Both cuttingly painful and cuttingly funny, interwoven with hope and understanding.

These are the dramas that burrowed into my soul and took up residence there, leading me down countless imaginary roads where their stories continued and I never had to say goodbye. My favorite stories are the ones that naturally lead me to write a second season in my head, because the characters just refuse to go towards the light.

1. Answer Me 1997: My era, my youth, my story.

2. Misaeng: This drama is how I feel about adulthood. This explains my reluctance to be an adult.

3. Coffee Prince: My ideal romance, if the world were perfect.

4. I Hear Your Voice: Pure addiction in drama form. My favorite cohabitation hijinks and noona romance in one.

5. Return of Iljimae: Sweeping origin story of a hero full of loneliness and pathos.

6. My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho: Grade A beef rom-com comfort food. Nom nom nom.

7. Gaksital: Sometimes history is the best drama, and ordinary heroes are the most extraordinary.

8. School 2013: The only drama couple I ship in real life.

9. Splish Splash Love: Such a perfect little dose of swoony fantasy romance in such a small bite.

10. White Christmas: Left me scarred for life. Why do I keep rewatching it?

HeadsNo2

I always gravitate more toward dramas with both intellectual and emotional value, so these aren’t just my favorites, they’re also dramas I would wholeheartedly recommend without a moment’s hesitation as perfect examples of what K-dramas bring to the table that other forms of television media rarely can: an unmatched sense of pathos, a complete story, and the ability to both immerse and transport us.

1. White Christmas: Gorgeous, dark, twisty, what-is-the-nature-of-humanity masterpiece.

2. Chuno: Manes of glory and abs and Jang Hyuk, oh my!

3. Tree With Deep Roots: That villain reveal is still unmatched. Also, Jang Hyuk.

4. Liar Game: Best drama villain ever, best hero ever, best mind games. #sixseasonsandamovie

5. Six Flying Dragons: It’s like my fifth favorite drama wrapped around my third favorite drama.

6. End of the World: Death and disease on an apocalyptic scale? Yes please.

7. Conspiracy in the Court: Gripping, depressing, uplifting, unrelenting, masterful.

8. Punch: Amazing villain, deft storytelling, out of this world acting.

9. Heartless City: Dark like my soul.

10. History of the Salaryman: Truly one of a kind, offbeat and hilarious. All hail Yeo-chi.

gummimochi

Take one look at this list and here’s what you can learn about me: I like my heroes flawed, my villains smart, and the darker and grittier the dramaverse, the better. My demands are simple, but hard to meet when it comes to all-time faves, and these are the stories that have secured an eternal place in my heart.

1. Heartless City: Bros before hos, and sometimes drugs.

2. Signal: Can you hear my still beating heart now? Good.

3. Bad Guys: It takes one to know one.

4. Story of a Man: Brainy is the new sexy.

5. Shut Up: Flower Boy Band: Eye Candy.

6. Punch: Sock it to ’em.

7. Liar Game: Go big or go home.

8. Soulmate: This is not a love song.

9. Kill Me, Heal Me: I can’t split my love for you into seven.

10. Autumn Fairy Tale: Won Bin, the original Oppa.

dramallama

It’s difficult to articulate my subjectivity and natural draw to my favorite dramas, but my final picks ultimately depended on my chemistry with the drama itself. Something in the narratives of these dramas sparked my inclination to fall into the stories head first and remain captured by them through the end.

1. Signal: Waiting for the walkie talkie crackle from Season 2 to let me know that it’s happening.

2. Healer: Clever and lonely night errand boy with adorable alter egos finds people he’d risk his life to protect.

3. Answer Me 1997: A nostalgia for young effervescence that woke up the fangirl I never knew existed.

4. My Name is Kim Sam-soon: The original mortified and unapologetic heroine who strutted away all her haters. She was my idol.

5. Misaeng: Life will always be tragically incomplete, but at least we’re trying to complete it together.

6. Dear My Friends: When I grow up, I want to be them.

7. Gaksital: Epically treacherous. Epically revolutionary. So. Freaking. Epic.

8. Full House: Imagine younger Rain playing himself and adorably dancing to “Gom Se Mari” to cheer up his cohabiter.

9. Queen In-hyun’s Man: Just keep kissing the Joseon scholar until he figures out what it means.

10. Famous Chil Princesses: The family drama that made me want to live in a family drama. Maybe Lee Seung-gi and Park Hae-jin have a little to do with that.

LollyPip

I don’t really have any particular theme or reasons for my top ten, other that that these are the shows that have grounded and increased my love for Korean dramas for one reason or another. And it’s difficult to condense into one sentence why I love them so much, but I’ll do my best — basically, I just love them because I love them, and that’s all there is to it.

1. Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju: Favorite relationship, Bok-ju and Joon-hyung were perfect for each other in every way.

2. Shut Up: Flower Boy Band: Favorite boys, I’m still upset Eye Candy isn’t a real-life band.

3. Flower Boy Ramyun Shop: Favorite first Korean drama, the one that started it all.

4. The King 2 Hearts: Favorite downfall of an anti-hero due to love, also favorite second lead (I love you Earnest Bot).

5. School 2013: Favorite bromance, no romance could ever hold a candle to the love between Nam-soon and Hyung-soo.

6. Queen In-hyun’s Man: Favorite time-traveler (Boong-do will always be my ideal sexy nerd).

7. Answer Me 1997: Favorite bit of nostalgia… who can forget their first boy-band crushes?

8. Coffee Prince: Favorite cross-dressing drama, and my favorite first kiss.

9. Arang and the Magistrate: Favorite fantasy, the lore and world-building are still unmatched.

10. Heart to Heart: Favorite show I’ve recapped, I can’t even really say why, just that I enjoyed every minute of it.

odilettante

As a “love ‘em and leave ‘em” drama addict, “favorite” primarily means “watched more than once.” Likely drama candidates contain memorable characters, establish a sense of ownership after experiencing the debut of now beloved actors/actresses, and exploit my weakness for an ensemble cast filled with oddball personalities.

1. Answer Me 1997: “The reason I like you? … Because you’re you.”

2. What’s Up?: students filling my soul with their stories and song

3. Misaeng: the joy and pain of an exquisitely crafted drama

4. White Christmas: it’s not the holidays without Merry Mad Mir-eu

5. City Hall: Kim Sun-ah at her best, both comedically and emotionally

6. Story of a Man: platonic ideal of cat-and-mouse games (plus Park Ki-woong!)

7. Harvest Villa: goes to 11 on the “dark and quirky” dial

8. Flower Boy Next Door: Webtoon Editor is my patronus

9. King of Dramas: Jung Ryeo-won *heart eyes* and “What would Anthony do?”

10. Coffee Prince: Waffle Prince is the only prince I need

Saya

This list is fluid and ever-changing—it’s what I love now, with a slant towards recent shows because my memory sucks. It also doubles as my “shows I hawk to K-drama virgins”-list. For me, these shows transcend culture, language, and genre, to make a full meal for my hungry heart.

1. Signal: I don’t think I need to explain this one.

2. Healer: Just so heart-bursting and badass.

3. I Hear Your Voice: Hits every single sweet spot.

4. Two Weeks: Grand High Oppa, Lee Jun-ki.

5. Secret: I discover revenge melos. Where were you all my life.

6. I Remember You: Creepy, funny and bleeding-hearty.

7. Shut Up: Flower Boy Band: Aaall the bromance forever! Scraping my heart off the pavement.

8. Faith: I adore old-fashioned romances, especially when they involve sword-wielding warriors.

9. Dal-ja’s Spring: Also noona romances.

10. Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju: And youthful romances. Everything about this drama is unadulterated joy.

awcoconuts

If I were stranded on a deserted island and could only take ten dramas with me, which ten would I take? Here’s my list as of this writing, but I can’t promise that a new show (or a new-to-me, but old show) won’t cause an overhaul in the future.

1. Answer Me 1988: Wholly satisfying on so many levels.

2. Healer: Swoony hero + plucky heroine = consummate romance.

3. School 2013: Teenage angst, wrapped in a perfectly imperfect package.

4. Coffee Prince: Whether man or alien, love conquers all (harbinger of #9).

5. My Name is Kim Sam Soon: Sassy protagonist changes the drama landscape.

6. Bottom of the 9th with 2 Outs: A favorite friends-to-lovers tale.

7. Sandglass: Deservedly the drama of the decade, possibly the century.

8. Moonlight Drawn By Clouds: Puppy love packs an unexpectedly emotional punch.

9. You From Another Star: No one’s immune to Chun Song-yi’s charms.

10. The Lonely Shining Goblin: Flawed, but if you’re in the mood for melancholy…

chickachunga

My favorites are relatively recent except for a few oldies in the mix. I generally gravitate towards human and/or dark dramas with deft writing; eye candy isn’t even a requirement for me anymore! Perhaps because of my quarterlife crisis, I have a preference for pathos over sunshine and rainbows.

1. Misaeng: Jang Geu-rae got me TOO well.

2. Signal: The two operative words will always be “must” and “watch.”

3. I Hear Your Voice: I finally understood that the noona romance hype is real.

4. This Week, My Wife Will Have an Affair: Writing and directing perfection.

5. The Producers: Behind the scenes drama never ceases to amuse me.

6. Dear My Friends: Aging is sobering, but there’s comfort in its universality.

7. Answer Me 1988: Warmed my heart like a mother’s home cooked meal.

8. Memory: Guaranteed inducer of catharsis. Didn’t mind crying in every episode.

9. Stairway to Heaven: My full-blown obsession with this one lasted many years.

10. Autumn Fairy Tale: Three beautiful actors + tear-jerking story = smitten K-drama neophyte, aged nine.

CandidClown

In the spirit of the Top Ten Countdown, I’ve divided my favorite dramas into ten categories. Granted, my selections may not be the best examples of their groupings, but when I’m in the mood for a certain type of show, these are my go-to choices.

1. Coffee Prince (Gender Bender): Proof that love is blind whether you’re man, woman, or alien.

2. Witch’s Romance (Noona Romance): The end all of noona romances. Plus, Park Seo-joon…

3. Healer (Action): Cheeky hero, plucky heroine, clever story, and beautiful action scenes.

4. I Hear Your Voice (Supernatural Twist): Adorable puppy love, and one of my favorite villains.

5. Descended From the Sun (Bromance): The main leads actually get out-chemistry-ed by the male leads.

6. Arang and the Magistrate (Fusion Sageuk): Awesome world-building and character development. And Lee Jun-ki is preeetty.

7. Queen In-hyun’s Man (Time Travel): An almost perfect show that redefines “long-distance relationship.”

8. Delightful Girl Chun-hyang (Old School): So, not that old school, but it’s the oldest of my favorites.

9. Secret (Melodrama): I watched, I cried, I angsted — rinse, repeat.

10. Scent of a Woman (Chemistry): Ignore the plot and just watch for any Tango scene.

lovepark

I love dramas with memorable characters which is why I probably favor shows with an ensemble cast or scene-stealing side characters. Effortless rapport between characters is the essential element of a good show for me.

1. Mixed-up Investigative Agency: Wacky, mysterious, and utterly brilliant.

2. Jejoongwon: The quintessential story of a remarkable underdog.

3. The Chaser: The monologues are pure gold.

4. Giant: Epic.

5. Signal: Riveting and suspenseful.

6. Queen’s Classroom: A thoughtful and sophisticated depiction of youth and school.

7. Kyung-sook, Kyung-sook’s Father: Four masterfully crafted and darkly funny episodes.

8. Bad Family: The perfect balance of outrageous comedy and family love.

9. Answer Me 1988: A nostalgic tale about family and friends that transcends time.

10. Resurrection: Dark, intricate, and an exemplar in its genre.

tineybeanie

Some dramas come and go, but these have stayed in my heart. I gravitate toward them because they’ve withstood the test of time, and I’m continually surprised by how much I enjoy them even after multiple rewatches.

1. Jumong: Best ruler origin story ever.

2. Hwang Jin-yi: Why I still try Jang Geun-seok dramas, despite all the flops.

3. Empress Ki: No man stands in the way of this female badass.

4. Full House: Celebrity’s contract marriage and Rain’s cute jealousy face. I’m sold.

5. Stairway to Heaven: Heartbreaking in the most painfully addicting way.

6. Ojakkyo Brothers: Warming like piping hot duck soup on a snowy day.

7. My Daughter Seo-young: Family drama where every subplot is heartfelt and rewarding.

8. Family’s Honor: I love you because you love a dead man – the catch-22 hurts so good.

9. Nice Guy: Ultimate prickly ice princess story, with a twist of revenge.

10. The King 2 Hearts: You can never have too much Ha Ji-won in your life.

mary

I’m surprised (and kinda embarrassed) that my favorites are nowhere near my Top 10 Objectively Best K-dramas list. Looking at it, I seem to love shows with female characters that I either support, adore, or am in awe of.

1. Delightful Girl Chun-hyang: Still waiting for my Chun-hyang ♥ Mong-ryong reunion, Drama Gods…

2. Splish Splash Love: Only Algebra can make Sejong fall in love.

3. Prosecutor Princess: No frying pans of badassery, but Unni learns lawyering while staying fabulous.

4. Sungkyunkwan Scandal: Geol-oh’s hero hiccups + Yoon-shik/hee’s nerdery = Move over, Titanic.

5. My Girl: Jun-ki’s hair is the least funniest thing in this show, and that’s saying something.

6. Dream High: Adorable Robot Suzy as a plot point. What’s not to love?

7. Heartless City: Everyone’s here for the bromance, sismance, and sexy gang war music.

8. W—Two Worlds: Really shocking and amazing start. I don’t regret watching it.

9. Tree With Deep Roots: I didn’t know a language’s history can be this bloody (awesome).

10. Age of Youth: My subconscious was split into five and they became roommates.

SailorJumun

Happy big one-oh, Dramabeans! Now with dramas, I tend to gravitate towards the outrageously weird (fantasy, slapstick, etc.). But as I get older, the slice-of-life dramas sneak their way into my heart and, inevitably, my favorites list. So yeah, I like weird. With the occasional sprinkle of ordinary.

1. My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho: This will never be dethroned from its #1 spot. Never.

2. I Hear Your Voice: Redefined love for me. OTP moments still leave me breathless.

3. You From Another Star: Magic. Reminded me why I’m so obsessed with fairy tales.

4. Flower Boy Ramyun Shop: So silly, loud, and downright wild. In other words, awesome.

5. Coffee Prince: The Disney of dramas – it’s just a classic.

6. School 2013: My go-to comfort show. It’s like a nice angsty hug.

7. Pinocchio: Can never have enough Lee Jong-seok. Or writer Park Hye-ryun.

8. Healer: Jumped on this bandwagon super late, but I jumped nonetheless.

9. Brilliant Legacy: An old guilty pleasure for me and my mom.

10. Age of Youth: My soul mate in drama form. ♥

HappilyEverAfter

When I watch a drama, I’m usually in it for the comedic hijinks and heart-fluttering romances, but sometimes I can’t help but factor in other elements like a heart-wrenching bromance or a terrifying villain. Therefore, my list is organized according to “the feels when” (TFW):

1. School 2013: TFW you realize your bro hated you because he loved you.

2. I Hear Your Voice: TFW your drenched puppy is so happy to see you that nothing else matters to him.

3. Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju: TFW your boyfriend KNOWS he’s making your heart skip beats.

4. Protect the Boss: TFW “villains” are so hilariously ineffective that it’s endearing by the end.

5. You From Another Star: TFW Chun Song-yi brings out her rap game.

6. Master’s Sun: TFW skinship is the solution to your problems.

7. Descended From the Sun: TFW your boyfriend is a smart-talker but terrible liar.

8. You’re Beautiful: TFW you’re an ex-nun living with cute boys.

9. Sungkyunkwan Scandal: TFW your bro tries to stop you from getting yourself killed.

10. Liar Game: TFW you’re not sure who to trust in this world anymore.

murasakimi

I’m surprised to find a number of new dramas made their way onto my top ten list, but there’s no denying that the level of quality coming out of dramaland in recent years keeps surpassing expectations. For me, it’s about what characters stay in my mind and steal my heart.

1. Misaeng: Chief Oh is my favorite character of all time.

2. My Name is Kim Sam-soon: Oh wait, maybe Sam-soon?

3. Answer Me 1988: Crap, definitely Choi Taek.

4. Signal: Okay, let’s be honest, Lee Jae-han has his own list.

5. My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho: But… then what about meat-loving Mi-ho?

6. Oh My Ghostess: Kang Chef would never stand for this kind of indecisiveness!

7. Coffee Prince: Then again, Han-gyul would totally sympathize.

8. Autumn Fairy Tale: Look, Eun-suh had some real dilemmas, you’re being a baby.

9. My Girl: I know, let’s just drink away the confusion like Yoo-rin.

10. Queen Seon-deok: I meant to say, Mishil is the greatest ever… *gulp*

Laica

My favorite dramas have the kind of writing and acting that bring characters to life, so their journeys feel like my own. These shows follow their characters as they grow into their true selves, or fall in love with their perfect other halves—or both—and live on in my imagination to this day.

1. Misaeng: Has there ever been a more insightful, heartbreaking, glorious exploration of the human condition?

2. Signal: It felt like I didn’t breathe for sixteen episodes, and when it was over I wanted to do it again.

3. Coffee Prince: You never forget your first (drama) love—especially if his name is Choi Han-kyul.

4. City Hall: An intelligent, realistic love story between adults that’s also swooningly romantic.

5. Scandal: A Shocking and Wrongful Incident: A brilliant hybrid of revenge thriller and family melodrama.

6. Can You Hear My Heart: This family shattered my heart and put it together again, bursting with even more love.

7. Alone in Love: The various ways people love each other, and how to mend a broken heart.

8. Que Sera, Sera: A twisted, emotional love story that felt almost too real and vulnerable.

9. Shut Up: Flower Boy Band: Best coming-of-age music drama ever. Ever.

10. Tamra the Island: Park Kyu’s epic transformation is forever engraved on my heart.

TeriYaki

Secondary relationships are what make a drama particularly memorable in my book, adding extra layers that give me much to appreciate long after the drama concludes. Great performances from a talented cast are a given, but it’s those special connections that give my favorites a significant edge.

1. You From Another Star: Funny and heartwarming.

2. Pinocchio: The dads hold a special place in my heart.

3. High School King of Savvy: A grandpa and his loving grandson.

4. Answer Me 1988: The veteran actors who played the parents.

5. Page Turner: Short but sweet!

6. I Remember You: Bittersweet bromance.

7. You’re Beautiful: So much angst!

8. Dear My Friends: Deeply talented cast.

9. Sassy Go Go: The sweetest triangle.

10. Scent of a Woman: Love this mother and daughter.

My favorite drama can be when none of its episode bores me or forces me to fast forward, or a drama that have resonating ending, whether it's a happy, sad, tragic one... at least, to me. But in general, when a drama pulled at my heartstrings, wholesome, and doesn't make me fill like I've wasted however many hours it takes to finish it, then a favorite it is!
My Top 10 (21 to be exact haha), in no particular order:

1. My Daughter, Seo Young / I Can Hear Your Voice
- These two dramas are my favorites from Lee Bo Young. Every single episode of MDSY & ICHYV got me hooked.

2. Hong Gil Dong / Sungkyungkwan Scandal
- My favorite fusion sageuks. HGD got me in tears in the beginning because it was so damn funny. I was in tears at the end because it was so beautifully tragic. Eventhough SS' ending was a little anticlimactic, the journey throughout was so much fun and one of the best bromance ever, so much so that Song Joongki and Yoo Ah In got best couple. haha.

3. Dae Jang Geum
- A drama that somehow makes me enjoy the process of cooking. Seriously.

4. Queen Seon Deok / Emperor of the Sea
- These two historical sageuks are just so good in my opinion mostly because of their villains. I have not shipped a hero to be with the villain so much like in these two series. EoTS also got beautiful OSTs.

5. In Soon Is Pretty
- A beautiful human drama that reveals human nature in a very realistic way. The main OST has such beautiful lyrics and one of my favorite OSTs of all time.

6. The Greatest Love / City Hall
- Cha Seung Won laugh-out-loud dramas. Having said that, they are also dramas that depict society and its prejudices.

7. Nine, Nine Time Travels / Queen In-Hyun's Man / Splash Splash Love
- Examples of time traveling drama done right. I thought they were so clever and time traveling felt meaningful and purposeful in these series. The endings of Nine and QIHM were questionable but the whole stories up to that point was just so intriguing and good I couldn't throw them away.

8. Dream High/What's Up
- I just have to combine these two because I thought these are examples of well done youth/coming-of-age dramas. Funny, thoughful, and of course, so much talents.

9. My Love from the Star / Legend of the Blue Sea
- I always consider Jeon Ji Hyun an OK actress, nothing particularly spectacular. But her roles in these two series just redefines her to me. Also, Lee Minho wasn't my go-to definition of handsome guy, but LotBS makes me think he's actually very very charming.

10. Yellow Handkerchief / Terms of Endearment
-Han Ga In may not be the best actress, but for some reason I like seeing her on TV. Even if many say she's not good, at least give these two dramas of hers a try. Besides Han Ga In's character, there are a lot of other characters and their stories are great. I watched ToE because of Song Il Gook, but it also a drama that make me rediscover Ji Sung.

So I did not follow the rules and made a Top 20 list instead 'cause I suck at decision making and shocked how my old favorites were dropped and replaced by very recent dramas

2 Signal (new found love for Lee Je Hoon)
3 Healer (how Ji Chang Wook became my ultimate love)
4 Age of Youth (yay girlfriends)
5 Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo (I'm a sucker for coming-of-age dramas)

10 Goong (teenage royalty fantasy)

11 It's Okay, It's Love (the soundtrack is the best)
12 Kill Me, Heal Me (oh Ji Sung <3)
13 Jumong (did not expect Song Il Gook to be a dad of triplets now haha)
14 All About Eve (drama + catfights + journalism + boyfriend snatching + more drama + amnesia)
15 I Need Romance 3 (noona romance hihi)
16 I Hear Your Voice (part of me was hoping for Hye Sung to fall for Kwan Woo)
17 White Christmas (hot model actors + thriller)
18 W (if only the second half was amazing as the first, this could easily be in the Top 10)
19 Stairway To Heaven (guilty pleasure with my mom)
20 Only You (another old favorite / guilty pleasure)

I divided my top ten into categories.

Reply 1988 - favorite ensemble

Misaeng - favorite slice of life. I loved that the drama showed the growth of each character, even the minor ones.

Signal - favorite police drama

Weightlifting Fairy - favorite romance

Empress Ki - favorite sageuk, although Rebel may edge Empress Ki out if Rebel continues to be as good as it has been thus far.

Faith - favorite time travel. Yes, I know the directing was terrible but I loved the heroine and the villains.

Goblin - favorite comedy. This category may seem odd but it was the clever humor, rather than the took-itself-way-too-seriously explorations of Death, Fate, Love, Memory, that appealed to me the most.

W - favorite fantasy. Yes, the ending fizzled out into Conventional Korean Dramaland. (Do Korean dramas ALWAYS have to end with the love interests happily ever after? It takes some of the anticipation and excitement away from watching them.) The premise as well as the twists and turns were so much fun, however, that it made up for the (yawn) ending.

Punch - favorite thriller

School 2013 - favorite bromance and favorite school drama

Additional comments regarding my list above. I tend to prefer Korean dramas where romance is not a main theme of the drama because Korean dramas tend to follow a very predictable path when it comes to romance: A male lead and a female lead are cast in a drama and introduced in the first episode, conflict and/or misunderstandings are manufactured, and the male lead and female lead end up together because, duh, they are the male and female lead. I especially dislike the rich male/poor female story line because I feel like writers are trying to pander to what they think female viewers long for - a rich, handsome guy to fall in love with them. I'd prefer to obtain my millions on my own, thank you very much, and I suspect that that's true for most women. And so the fact that Goblin and W make it onto my list is a testament to their other strengths; they make it in spite of their rather conventional love lines. Weightlifting Fairy is one of the few romances I actually liked despite the predictable ending of the OTP, which is saying a lot.

Everything starts with a script - have yet to see a good drama w/o a quality script.

From there - add good acting, good direction, cinematography and production values.

1. Joseon X-Files

Superb writing; never quite knew where things were going (kept you in suspense) and the middle eps were simply mind-blowing. Then add in the great cast (Kim Ji-hoon, Im Jung-eun, Kim Kap-soo and Jo Hee-bong), direction and simply gorgeous cinematography and JXF still tops my list.

Just a shame that tvN has not thought of doing another season.

2. Coffee Prince

Might have put a couple of other above CP, but CP is the best K-romcom I have watched and should be the model for other K-romcoms as to how to do a romcom.

Basically, well done and believable build-up and development of the relationship btwn the lead couple.

Actual interesting and non-stereotypical/one-note supporting characters who were appropriately fleshed out and had their own interesting story-lines, but fit in well with the main story-line.

Avoided the usual K-drama cliches or danced around them (making you think that it was heading there, but pulling back and/or putting a diff. twist on things).

Once can tell that the writing/dialogue is quality when one can watch certain scenes multiple times and get the same sense of joy or laughter.

If there was one flaw, it would be that CP kinda started off a little slow (things didn't get going until the "princes" were recruited and they started working on renovating the coffee shop).

3. Answer Me/Reply Series

Kinda cheating since I'm including all 3 together...

1997 - most emotional impact when it came to the sad moments, etc. due to the surprise/shock factor (helps being the 1st of the series), but the "love triangle" here didn't ring true and was kinda icky.

1994 - favorite group of characters, loved everyone in the "gang"; 1994 also was the funniest out of the 3 (in part due to the characters like Samcheonpo, Hatai, Do-hee and this iteration of "mom" and dad."

1988 - loved the neighborhood aspect and my 2nd fave group of characters (but might have liked the relationship btwn the parents even more so than btwn the kids which is something (Go Cheetah! Dance! Dance!).

4. Police Unit 38 - not only well written, but had the combo of thriller, action and humor which is so difficult to do.

The writing was so good that SIG's acting really shone - esp. the scene where his character assumed the role of a Chinese businessman giving a fake sales presentation (so SIG was not only acting as his character but acting as his character acting as another made-up persona).

Also, the action scenes were really well done - much better than in many other action-based dramas and frankly, better than many K-action films.

5. Age of Youth - maybe the best written "slice of life" K-drama (wonderful mix of drama and comedy) aside from the AM/Reply series.

Really good female cast - some who were already established (in indie film) and deserving of more recognition and others who are just starting out and showing that they have the talent to go far in the industry if given the chance.

6. Bad Guys - also written by the writer of PU38; simply bad-ass.

Had only seen Kim Sang-joong in comedic roles (in film) and this was an eye-opener as what he could do dramatically (same for Park Hae-jin, who I had only seen as the 2nd male banana in romcoms where wasn't exactly impressed by his acting in part due to not given much to work with).

Why isn't Jo Dong-hyuk a K-mega star? He has the looks, charisma AND acting chops! (Should be a major K-film star.)

Hadn't seen him be the lead in anything but the OCN series, Yaksha.

7. Tree With Deep Roots - may have placed this higher on the list just for Han Suk-kyu's powerhouse performance (not to mention, where I first really noticed Song Joong-ki's acting ability), but Jang Hyuk's over-acting kinda ruined his part for me.

JH did the same type of over-acting (using the same mannerisms over and over and over again) in Chuno, and it didn't help that Chuno was a far inferior sageuk than TWDP.

8. Miss Korea - vastly underappreciated - for what might seem like a superficial topic of a beauty pageant, but surprisingly deep and touching.

Lee Yeon-hee really shone in her role (good writing can bring the best out of an actress not known for her acting) and Lee Sung-min was great as usual.

Just too bad that MK didn't get higher ratings (was LSM's project right before he hit leading man status in Misaeng).

9. He/The Man Who Can't Marry - like Miss Korea, an underappreciated romcom with a wonderful cast led by Ji Jin-hee.

10. Liar Game - one of the more intelligent K-dramas; as interesting as Shin Sung-rok was as the villain in MLFtS in what could have swerved into camp, SSR was simply made his role in LG.

Caveat - there are a # of well-regarded dramas like Signal and Misaeng which I haven't finished or started, which likely would make my Top 10, nor did I include any of the long sageuks.

Honorable Mention -

Splash Splash Love - short but sweet (and well done)

Girl K - also short, but not sweet (pretty brutal in terms of the violence), but also well done.

Let's Eat series - both had some flaws, but the 1st had a simply hilarious 2nd male lead and supporting characters and the 2nd was Seo Hyun-jin's breakout (sorry, but LE2 was more deserving of ratings success than OHYA).

Oh My Ghostess - fun and great performances by PBY and KSG.

My Princess -

9 End, 2 Outs - another underappreciated romcom

The Producers - for the most part, well done (didn't quite buy the one-sided love story on the part of Kim Soo-hyun's character) and had several really well written/witty scenes.

Bring It On Ghost - breezy fun

Discovery of Romance - Kim Seul-gi stealing the show

I Need Romance 2012 - some were put-off by the flawed lead characters, but that's what made them interesting and had best characterization of the 2nd male lead, along with nice mix of humor.

Three Musketeers - more humor than the typical sageuk.

Best/The Greatest Love - best written Hong sisters romcom due to fleshing out some of the supporting characters (Dokko Jin is their most memorable male character, and his bromance with "Ding Dong" was great).

Master's Sun - great lead couple, but like in most Hong sisters dramas, the over-arching story had major flaws and the episodic "ghost story of the day" were uneven.

My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho - Shin Mina's performance as Miho may just be the winningest in a romcom and really is worth a watch despite the story having major flaws (one-note supporting characters, story flailing around at the end, story-lines dropped, over-use of K-drama cliches, etc.)

Worst K-dramas romcoms - should be used in a treatise on how to write a bad K-romcom irrespective of some of them being ratings hits (talk about being cliche-filled, stereotypical/one-note supporting characters, poorly developed relationship btwn the lead couple which is of prime importance in a romcom and simply laughably bad dialogue and scenarios)

Secret Garden

Lie to Me

Big

Warm & Cozy

Rooftop Prince

Oh Hae-Young Again

Triple (more boring/slow than just plain awful)

Honorable Mention worst sageuks (the writing failed all of them)

Dr. Jin - not much to say here, except that it was unintentionally good for laughs.

Hong Gil Dong - poor writing didn't help Sung Yu-ri's acting (the 2nd female lead, Kim Ri-na stole the show from SYR and she was only in the last 1/4 of the series; too bad that it seems like KRN hadn't done much acting since); doesn't help that the best characters were some of the supporting ones (others were simply annoying due to poor characterization and acting).

Chuno - could have been so much better, but the writing failed it. The love triangle had little emotional impact and Lee Da-hae's bland acting on top of Jang Hyuk's over-acting made much of it unbearable. Again, doesn't help that the best moments came from some of the supporting characters like Ahn Suk-hwan's bandit chief.

Arang and the Magistrate - yes, it laid out a magical netherworld, but after the fun 1st 3rd, the story just kept going in circles of the protagonist repeatedly missing out on finding the "big secret" and at the end, the whole thing wasn't nearly as big of a deal as the supposed build-up. Furthermore, all the "baddies" were more annoying than anything to be concerned about and the doing away with the "big baddie" was laughable bad (if it was that easy, what was the big deal?).

Gu Family Book (doesn't help that the best part were the 1st 2 eps laying out the background of the story that occurred years before the main story).

DR. JIN was the first Kdrama my husband and I watched on Hulu. Even though I didn't know which end was up, eventually I got the feeling that the leading man was not the greatest actor... and only learned much later that he was Mr. Hand Towel.

Amazingly, despite the confounded brain fetus, we continued watching Kdramas. Our next Hulu outing was KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK-HYANG -- and it was way better. Even so, I still have a warm spot in my heart for DR. JIN -- I just have a hard time rewatching it. ;-)

if you look at the behind the scenes clips for PU38, they took their action scenes pretty seriously, rented movie equipment and cameras, cleared a whole section of a large street, had 100 cars in that section etc. in all, it was shot like a movie, almost no static cameras.

i read above about the top 10 kdrama blog and i laughed when someone wrote dramabeans all the way. i must admit that DB had been my lifeline for kdramas for a long time. thank you always for being so great in what you do and just to say it again thank you for 10 years of love and sacrifices to give us the best kdrama blog.

it's very hard to chose the top 10 kdrama... so many choices and yet i'm happy that most of my choices fit in to your choices too.

1. Gaksital - Intense. Epic.
2. Ojakgyo Brothers - Joo Won. Family. Love. The only family drama i had ever watched live till the end.
3. Misaeng - Awesome. Everything that happens in the office is depicted here. Adulthood.
4. Shut-Up Flower Boy Band - Good looks. Rock. Bromance. Family. Friendship.
5. I Hear Your Voice - I can go on watching this forever.
6. School 2013 - Bromance Extraordinaire.
7. Pinocchio - I'm partial to Lee Jong Suk but really one of the best written stories.
8. The Greatest Love - when it comes to rom-com, what else is there?
9. You From Another Star - just makes me go back and watch it all over again.
10. Coffee Prince - love story that transcends gender.

There are a lot more but since it's only ten. :( I would have included Giant because Epic is Giant and Giant is Epic.

Star of the Universe/Universe's Star - upfront, simple and painfully sweet and you'd just want to go back and watch it like forever [spoiler] tho, i'd cry on the same scenes all over again and it's OST is on my playlist along, on repeat from my PC to my netbook to my 2 celphones from home to office.

Hard to come up with a top 10 atm, but I am SO HAPPY to see My Girl, My Name is Kim Sam Soon and Soulmate make it on the lists more than once.

My Girl was the first k-drama I watched in Korean with Eng Subs. First actually drama would be Summer Scent which I didn't know was a K-drama since it was dubbed in Chinese. Next would be Winter Sonata, which again was Chinese dubbed and I didn't know it was a k-drama.

Funny how just the weekend that past, even though there is quite a few dramas I'm behind and haven't caught up on (Six Flying Dragons), I decided to rewatch old favourites. Watched MNIKSS and LOVED IT all over again. The fashion may be outdated but everything else still gave me laughs and feels. <3 <3 Hyun Bin <3 <3.

Then watched My Girl. LOL at Lee Junki's fairy hair. Lee Da Hae was my girl crush back then. AWW at young Lee Dong Wook and his hair.

Soulmate is underrated and really wishing a lot more people watch it. Have rewatched this drama a few times.

I know I am in the best place to be in Kdramaland when I see some of my all-time favorite dramas up there, acknowledged by these amazing Kdrama authorities. Here goes my list that I'm giddy to have shared with y'all (not top 10 but my inner fangirl spazzed after seeing your top 10s so kindly indulge me)....

Coffee Prince (aka that drama that introduced me and then my growing love for kdrama to Dramabeans!)
My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho
White Christmas
Arang and the Magistrate
The King 2 Hearts
You From Another Star
Scent of a Woman
Master’s Sun
My Girl
Brilliant Legacy
You’re Beautiful
My Name is Kim Sam-soon
High School King of Savvy
Answer Me 1997

The rest of my favorites didn't match to anyone else which is sad but I'm quite fond of them so that's okay, I'm just gonna keep them all to myself XD. I really wish to watch at least 2-3 more dramas from every one's list sometime soon, even if time is a little unkind to me in the past years. I miss dramas a lot and all those times I was watching and reading recaps simultaneously. That was my Kdrama routine a few years back to ensure I get the most out of each drama. It's satisfaction guaranteed everytime! To be honest, it's never just a drama for me, it's an experience. All thanks to JB and GF for all the years you've tagged-teamed in bringing the inner fangirl out in each of kdrama viewers and recap readers out there. Kudos as well to all the crew who has been a part and still a part of this wonderful family! I definitely would love to hang out here often again and maybe, make new friends... Happy 10th Anniversary Dramabeansssss!!! <333

Ultimate number 1...
Dong Yi - watched at least five times, probably more. Ji Jinhee, Han Hyojoo, and Kim Yoojung were perfect in their roles. The serious, sweet, cute, heart breaking moments, all the great feels with a great story.

2. Jewel in the Palace - Lee Youngae is such a great actor, wish she was more active, looking forward to her new drama Saimdang, though it doesn't end until May 4 (and so bummed that --- is male lead), it's been over a ten year wait for her. Hope it's as good as Jewel, which was soooo good, the story, the acting, oh and Ji Jinhee again, so perfect. Lee Youngae is my top three for must watch, I think she is so beautiful!!!

2. Jumong (tie) - The epic drama made so by Song Ilgook, such a great actor.

(Oh just realized those last two are over ten years, wow)

2. Kingdom of the Winds - Song Ilgook again, he did it once more, epic, so good acting plus great storyline.

3. The Young Warriors - Watched this for Hu Ge, pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the story.

4. Asa ga Kita - Watched this one for Hiroshi Tamaki but loved the story and found a cute actor I didn't know, Dean Fujioka.

5. Empresses in the Palace - So good and yet so sad, Sun Li is outstanding (Chinese women are extraordinarily beautiful).

5. Nirvana in Fire - Hu Ge again, he is good, great, gorgeous. Maybe this should be rated higher, it was a sleepless few days on edge for next and next and next episode.

5. The Princess Weiyoung - Tiffany Tang and Luo Jin the perfect couple, one of those dramas you never want to see it end because chemistry between the leads are oh so good and storyline keeps you on edge.

Cute dramas
Perfect Couple - Wallace Huo (oh so very handsome) and Tiffany Tang really cute together in this comedy.

Sunny Happiness - Love Janine Chang (really pretty) and Mike He in this funny and cute story.

Hana Kimi - Maki Horikita is really cute in this fun drama filled with so many cute Japanese guys.

Love O2O - Yang yang is too cute!

Amachan - Good story, cute.

You're Beautiful - Not really a top ten but it was memorable, cute.

Fated to Love You - Really funny.

Hard to stop at ten...
Also really good, Smile Dong hae, Waking Love Up, Baker King Kim Tak Goo, Empress Ki, Flower Boy Ramen, and so many more...

If you liked Jewel in the Palace then you might like Dong Yi, but if you're looking for that robust epic awesomeness of Jumong or Kingdom of the Winds then you may be disappointed. I was surprised Dong Yi was not listed in anyone's top ten list, so I think I have a different kind of taste but that's why I made a post for first time, I love this article and dramabeans for sharing individual opinions.

I'm looking forward to watching Rebel in May when it's completed. The 2008 Hong Gil Dong with Kang Jiwan was very good, so I'm excited to watch this story with Yoon Gyunsang, he was really good in Six Flying Dragons. Also new actress Chae Soobin, saw her in Spy and Moonlight Drawn by Clouds, for such a newbie she's good, maybe she has that natural talent like Kim Yoojung and Kim Saeron, which is rare.

I agree with you, Nirvana in Fire is award winning type drama. Hu Ge is a top ten favorite for me. You might like The Young Warriors, a story about General Yang family. Did you see that a Nirvana in Fire 2 is upcoming maybe next year, and Huang Xiaoming (another top ten fav, he's just too handsome) is cast in it, so happy, so excited... big smile.

Oh JUMONG is an absolute must watch, especially if you liked KINGDOM OF THE WINDS. (I like how you capped the titles, I'm a goina copy you)

I'm in search mode right now, so I keep coming back to this article reading through the lists in hope of finding something I haven't watched (or tried watching but dropped), haha someone listed an old Japanese drama like twenty years old I think, I might re-watch that or NIRVANA IN FIRE for the third time. You might like NIRVANA if you like CDramas.

Yes you are so right, Jang Hyuk is definitely over-the-top in FATED TO LOVE YOU, that hideous laugh you can't help but laugh back.

I get that second lead syndrome quite often, but I end up dropping the drama cause then the lead irritates me, silly me my mom says. PROTECT THE BOSS and DR JIN (at the time I didn't know it was the same actor), second lead Kim Jaejoong, the most handsome mesmerizing Japanese looking Korean (I actually went back years later to watch it to see him, but both dramas were not my taste); and also in SUNGKYUNKWAN SCANDAL, wanted to see so much more of Song Joonki, I guess it was before he was popular, wish he would take more lead roles. FLOWER BOY RAMEN Lee Kiwon, I was rooting for him too Mr Handsome Dreamy Eyes, but was okay with Cha Chisoo the gorgeous Jung Ilwoo.

I like your name, my favorite is pikake hehe also pakalana and puakinikini, so sweet, makes me homesick.

What's wrong with SUFFB's title? I've heard it could be taken two cool ways. "Shut up, we're flower boys, we know but we're awesome rockers too" or "Stop the flower boy band named Shut Up" which honestly is an issue like every episode.

Putting the words "flower boy" in the title makes it seem silly, like they are some sort of fluffy pre-teen fake band, when in reality, they went through a lot of dark times and really had hard-hitting music than implied by the title. It just doesn't make sense to me personally, so I wish it had a different title.

Yours are actually the first explanations I've heard for the title that make any sense, so thanks for that! Maybe I can learn to like it a little more if I can understand it. :)

@Rach

I do agree with your comment on the title of SUFBB. I haven't seen it, and have always thought that the show should not be good since the title sounds a bit.. tiny tiny bit silly. But as the series made its way to many top ten lists here.. might give it a try.

You definitely should! It's a lot deeper than it seems, and has some really great acting (Sung Joon, Jo Boa), as well as some parts that were perfectly cast (L).

I just have two, based on the number of times I have rewatched them:

Coffee Prince and Weighlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo

Coffee Prince is my favorite drama and watching WFKBJ was the first time I got the same "feels" as I did with Coffee Prince... almost 10 years and many other K-dramas later.

My favorite dramas are ones with female heroines who are more fleshed out and independent than the k-drama world traditionally gives us us. I'm a sucker for a good romance where the male character treats the female character as an equal (and does as little arm-grabbing as possible). Along those lines, I enjoy dramas that acknowledge that the female characters experience desire: every single one of the dramas on this list features a kiss (or more! Omo!) where the female lead enthusiastically participates rather than standing there like a paralyzed zombie.

Top 10
(in no particular order)

1. Dal-ja's Spring - Love how the show centers the heroine's personal and professional growth, love the ensemble cast and the friendships depicted, love the romance.

2. Coffee Prince - The gender-bending, Yoon Eun-hye's acting, the ensemble cast, and the utter perfection of Choi Han-kyul. This was the first k-drama I loved; am also still searching for my own Han-kyul.

3. 9 End 2 Outs - As a scarred veteran of actual friends-to-lovers romances in my own life, I find this the most realistic/poignant friends-to-lovers drama I've seen. Top it off with a huge dollop of forced cohab (my favorite trope after friends-to-lovers romance) and you've got a winner.

4. Angry Mom - I was surprised at how much I loved this drama given that there is very little romance. But the grit and loving relationships between the mostly-female cast cemented this dram as a favorite.

5. Splash Splash Love - I love Kim Seul-gi. And I loved this tender, hilarious story. (Though I'm still crying about the Kiss in the Sea at the end...*sobs*)

6. Shut Up: Flower Boy Band - Favorite youth drama. The friendships and conflict felt so real. Still listen to the soundtrack on the reg.

7. Healer - LOVED IT. Loved the hidden identity hijinks, the hunky hero, the determined heroine, and the all-around badassery.

8. It's Okay, It's Love - This is the first k-drama that made me cry. I still sob when I hear Family of the Year's song 'Hero'. I was touched by the unexpectedly sympathetic portrayal of mental illness.

9. Ms. Temper & Nam Jung-ki - Loved the outright feminism of this show with a hard-as-nails heroine and a meek hero.

10. City Hall - Cha. Seung. Won. *unf* And Kim Sun-ah gives such a wonderful performance. I loved watching her journey, and seeing how these characters changed each other for the better.

Honorable Mention:

Twenty Again - Unconventional plot depicting a character we don't often see as the lead in k-dramas: a middle-aged ahjumma. I loved her journey of self-discovery and the sweet hero who loved her for who she is.

OK, I'm not sure who else is still looking at this comments section, but I spent the past week going through all the comments on this post and keeping track of everyone's top 10 lists in a spreadsheet.

This is similar to what CozyBooks did up thread (which I discovered about halfway through the comments) - the major difference is I assigned points based on the relative position of each drama on everyone's lists. So, dramas in the number 1 position received 10 points, and dramas in the number 10 position received 1 point. For those lists where it was specifically mentioned that there was no order, I assigned 5 points per drama on that list. I also gave each drama a bonus point per list they were included on. Overall, I included the lists of 228 people, including the DramaBeans staff.

TOP 20:
1 - Coffee Prince (590 points / 80 lists)
2 - Signal (500 points / 65 lists)
3 - Healer (461 points / 65 lists)
4 - Misaeng (425 points / 60 lists)
5 - Answer Me 1997 (418 points / 60 lists)
6 - Answer Me 1988 (361 points / 51 lists)
7 - Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo (335 points / 48 lists)
8 - I Hear Your Voice (324 points / 45 lists)
9 - You From Another Star (289 points / 46 lists)
10 - Queen In Hyun's Man (229 points / 37 lists)
-------
11 - My Name is Kim Sam Soon (221 points / 34 lists)
12 - The Master's Sun (216 points / 37 lists)
13 - Goblin (210 points / 36 lists)
14 - School 2013 (197 points / 32 lists)
15 - Goong / Princess Hours (188 points / 29 lists)
16 - Shut Up: Flower Boy Band (188 points / 27 lists)
17 - The Princess' Man (186 points / 26 lists)
18 - My Girlfriend is a Gumiho (178 points / 28 lists)
19 - City Hunter (169 points / 27 lists)
20 - Pinocchio (166 points / 23 lists)

There's no big surprise here: Coffee Prince takes 1st place by a wide margin, appearing on 80 people's lists and listed in 1st place on 17 of those.

Here are some other interesting observations:

- Other than Coffee Prince and My Name is Kim Sam Soon, every other drama in the top 20 is from the 2010s. A general quality improvement over time, or that's when people really started watching?

- Although many people had sageuks on their lists, the only one to make the top 20 is the Princess' Man.

- Despite Answer Me 1997 and 1988 both making the top 10, the 1994 edition only made it onto 2 lists. I'm guessing that despite 1994 being an excellent show, most people only listed 1 of the 3 dramas, and the other two are just more popular.

- People like shows with supernatural elements. 7 of the top 20 featuring everything from time travel to ghosts to aliens.

For those that are interested, here is the link to my google spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1OS1kVJ_MO-TJ0qZxMBJPKrRMcPydh_jJ3GXRB3M7RtM/edit?usp=sharing

In this document, you'll see every drama that was mentioned in the comments, the year each drama is from, and the math behind the rankings. I've also included the genres listed at...

Forgot to mention, there's also a tab on that spreadsheet that just lists the rankings for all of the DramaBeans staff lists. Some interesting changes between the staff rankings and the all-comments rankings:

- Coffee Prince moves to #1 from #3, moving Signal down into the #2 spot.

- Shut Up: Flower Boy Band drops from #8 to #16. Maybe because relatively less of the general readership has seen it?

- Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo jumps from #14 to #7. A testament to the adorable-ness of this recent drama. I wonder how big of an effect it is that this drama is so recent in many of our memories, and how many lists it will be on in a year? It's #2 on mine right now!

- Queen In Hyun's Man makes the biggest jump into the top 10, from #24 to #10.

- Goblin makes the biggest jump into the top 20, from #94, included in last place on one staff list, to #13. Another recent-drama effect?

- 3 dramas in the all-comments top 20 didn't even make it onto any staff lists: Goong/Princess Hours, Princess' Man, and City Hunter.

I watch Korean dramas for typical love dovey stuff. For cop shows, I prefer to watch American ones since there are no cliff hangers. One cop show that I thought really stood out above the others was Missing Noir M.

1. Reply 1997 - My favorite reply series. Even though each reply series hit me hard, 1997 is the one that stayed with me. Seo In-Guk's confession of love at karoke, that just killed me.

2. Misaeng - Sure the episodes are long but it felt so real. Superb acting and directing. Amazing dialogues that put life in words.

3. The Moon that Embraces the Sun - It could have been soo much better if they casted a different actress for the main role. But Kim Soo Hyun's acting more than made up for it. Also very addictive story.

4. Healer - This is where I found Ji Chang-Wook(I watched Empress Ki later to get more of him). I thought Park Min-Young really came alive in this drama. The writer has many masterpieces under her belt(Sandglass!) but this felt very modern and not too serious. It was too bad I caught this later, couldn't participate in the Healer fever.

5. Descendants of the Sun - One drama of Kim Eun Sook had to be there! I enjoyed Secret Garden, Gentleman's Dignity as well. I liked the fact that conflict between the male and female came from their ideals, not noble idiocy. Also the dialogue was worth it

6. You from Another Star - How can you say no to Chun Song Yi?

7. Heartless City - Jung Kyung Ho at the finest. Noir done right. I read that Jung Kyung Ho sustained shoulder injury so a lot of action scenes were cut in the 2nd half of the story. If that didn't happen...

8. I Can Hear Your Voice - Right mixture of romance, suspense, and fantasy.

9. World Within - A rare gem of a drama. Even though it's older(circa 2008), it doesn't feel old at all.

10. The Greatest Love - Who knew Cha Seung Won could be so funny?

Honorable Mention
1. Goblin - I though it was a bit slow in some parts but intricacy of the story and cinematography was superb.
2. Reply 1994, 1988 - Reply series is like none other. It always delivers it's own nostalgia and longing for the simpler times.
3. Discovery of Love - Many lament this drama should have aired on a cable network for better ratings and more buzz. It was too honest and realistic for a regular network.
4. Can We Love? - It asked many real questions.
5. Empress Ki - I didn't like the story about the Goryeo King, but strong female character and Ji Chang-Wook was a revelation in acting out Tal Hwans vulnerabilities and everlasting love(obsession) to Seung Nyang
6. Doctors - There isn't much plot, but delved deep into dealings of relationship

I haven't watched many dramas, but here are a few I really like:
Solomon's Perjury ( The best high school one: Just like how teens would investigate, yet mature!)
Cruel City ( Left me breathless- Unexpected twists, and Jung Kyung Ho's skills (obviously:) ) )
The K2 ( A li'l unrealistic, but worth watching... Awesome action stuff tho:)
Descendants of the Sun (It's got everything in the perfect combo: action, romance, humour..)
I Remember You ( Love the suspense!!)
Cheer Up! ( Got addicted to it right in the first episode, the cute love triangle, the bromance, relationship between Real King and Baek Ho were great)
Phantom ( Idk why it's so underrated, but it was pretty thrilling.. worth watching!)
Mrs Cop II (A cool one- Kim bum's acting skills tho! Never expected him in this kind of a role!)
White Christmas ( ~Awesome~)
Special Affairs Team Ten ( The way they solved the cases was nerve wracking... Simply superb!)
It's Okay, That's Love! ( The chemistry was perfect)
Who are you: School 2015 Wow to the whole cast, incredible acting and storyline, especially Cho Soo Hyang.. The first time I ever hated a character so much in a drama.. hats off to her skills!
City Hunter ( A cool drama- love the plot)

My top 10 so far....counting down

10 . Playful Kiss
I love the cuteness of the drama. I like the idea of odd pairing but I wish Beak Sung Jo show more emotions.

9. You're Beautiful
Second and third lead syndrone...a fun comedy drama

8. Princess Hours/Goong
Beautiful and cute drama....a bit of second lead syndrone but its ok.

7. Boys Over Flowers
Four gorgeous boys ...and I fell in the second lead Ji Hoo....but the main lead couple is good too.....its fun beautiful drama

6. Love Story in Harvard
Love Kim Tae Hee and her leading man in here....no second lead syndrone...yeah...my favourite rich guy poor girl story too.

5. Moonlight Drawn By Clouds
This one is funny. Just love Prince Lee Yeong in his journey of becoming a good king....also his love story with Raon.

4. Green Rose
I think this is underrated. I know there are cliches in here but so are the hit one like boys over flowers .....It has a sweet love story and a great suspense plot...my favourite oldies

3. Healer
The leads chemistry is fantastic and the story is fun....but sometimes there's a bit confusion and the ending is sort of hanging to me

2. The K2
Yeah ...I like K2 more than Healer....beacuse I feel more complete even when the ending kind of rush.....and still keeping the hero identity mystrey..but the story reached to the point....i also love the sort of fairytale story added in here. Love the actions .....cute scenes too.

1. W Two worlds
One of my favourite story ever created and my favourite korean drama ever. It combines all genre here...suspense, drama, romance, si fi, action, horror, thriller and even comedy...i have great time watching this to the end..no negative things at all...for those who say the drama go down hill in the second half ...I could only think it is because the drama did not go in the they imagin that they just got lost or they actually did not like the story but only start it for the something new thing ...then when they got tired(not able to understand the story) they said its the show problem.....but to me I love the whole 16 hours to pieces. The main message in here is to fight with life to the fullest. You can make choices out of the desntiny you are given..
