Drama viewership ratings for the week of Mar. 6-12, 2017

(Un)happy Daylight Savings Time, everyone! (Seriously, why is this still a thing?) But in drama news, Defendant broke its own records yet again with a walloping 24.9% this week, which has me thinking that we should actually be grateful they only extended the show by two episodes. Had Defendant been pulling these numbers at the time of the extension, maybe SBS would have been a little more reluctant to let their ratings cow go with only one more week of scheduled content. Luckily for us, the extension can’t really be felt yet, and hopefully it won’t ever be. (*prays to drama gods*)

Meanwhile, Chief Kim saw a slight drop in the middle of the week, but it’s still by and large the undisputed champion of the Wednesday-Thursday time slot. Missing 9 bowed out at an okay 4.2% (in keeping with the numbers it’s been pulling in for a long while now), while Saimdang, Light’s Diary is managing to keep its head above water in the double digits. Next week will be sure to shake some things up, but it’d be surprising if Saimdang suddenly took the spotlight at this point.

Cable darling Strong Woman Do Bong-soon reached a new high this week at 8.7%, which seems well-deserved for such a delightful show. I can’t help but feel bad for Tomorrow With You, which even dropped below the 1% mark this week, but you can’t win ’em all.

As far as weekend shows go, Father Is Weird got off to a great start after taking over the slot left by Laurel Tree Tailors, though it doesn’t seem like it’s going to reach the 30% mark anytime soon. You’re Too Much has some catching up to do to its predecessor (Blow Breeze), since right now, it’s pulling in average-to-low numbers for a drama meant to be the next hit weekender. How’s the makjang level in any of the weekend shows? Anything so crazy it’s worth watching?

So sad for Tomorrow With You and so happy for Strong Woman Do Bong-soon. Ah, my conflicted heart!

these ratings don't matter -- there are those of us that totally love Tomorrow With You, in spite of these numbers from Korea.

it seems the korean audience loves the usual makjang stories and they don't respond to the more creative, newer format dramas...

These ratings don't matter much to us, but they matter a lot for public and tv broadcasts. Basically, if your drama scores high ratings, the TV station will be poured with ads money and also higher recognition for the drama. They could use it to market the drama to China, Japan, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and the rest of the world. Your beloved leads would also gain higher reputation, popularity, and offered more CFs, projects, fan meetings, etc.
At the end of the day, tv stations in Korea still treat ratings = business, good ratings = good business+possible extension, low ratings = loss+possible episodes cut.

I myself don't really care about ratings, but when my favorite shows got very low ratings, e.g Missing Nine, Tomorrow With You, it hurts a little.

"it seems the korean audience loves the usual makjang stories and they don’t respond to the more creative, newer format dramas…"

please, don't insult another viewer just because they don't like their drama,
even i-fans find it mediocre and boring too,
why don't just admit that the show maybe not a good one?
reflect on itself before judging others

Agree with you, although I like TWY but I also can understand why the rating is low. Just because our fav show doesn't get the rating like we want, it seems wrong to conclude the overall taste of Koreans mostly on makjang. Chief Kim, SWDBS - all achieve high rating and they are not usual makjang. The standard makjang drama like MBC weekend drama, both received low rating so far. Koreans also welcome the drama with new and creative concept like Signal and W.

Please - just like shows like "Beverly Hills 90201", "Melrose Place", "Grey's Anatomy" and the like were hits (much less, "Baywatch" for a syndicated show) - doesn't mean they were quality shows.

And many quality shows don't get the viewership that they deserve - whether it be here in the States or Korea.

agreed. imo TWY is just a niche show. some people can pulled in and some can't get past a few episodes because it's just not their style. i've seen that in both the ratings in s. korea and the comments made by i-fans on multiple k-drama oriented sites. it's just not for everyone. i think it's wrong to assume koreans just have bad taste, but it's also pretty misguided to say that the drama isn't doing well because it's bad.

0

I agree. As much as I wanted to like it, I can't finish it. It doesn't engage me, and I feel nothing for the characters. I'm sorry, but I don't think it's a good drama.

SWDBS appear to wider audience while TMY has limit audience, hence the rating. Even in DB, SWDBS always has double comments compare to TMY. SWDBS is popular and TMY is not, simple as that.

PBY and PHS as capable of actors as SMA and LHJ. PBY act cute much cuter than SMA. PHS looks much more like an CEO than LHJ. Watching SWDBS with smile on your face but TMY is sad and frustration.

I believe you meant to say, "appeal" rather than "appear".
Idk about you, but I don't think just bc a character is a CEO they have to flaunt every ounce of wealth they have. And obviously Tomorrow With You would be much more sad than Do Bong Soon, it's a romantic melodrama and the plot revolves around both of them dying some time in the future.
I don't know what kind of point you tried to make by comparing the actors, but it seems a bit rude. The main leads on both shows are capable actors, I'd argue that the leads on Tomorrow With You are better actors (or at least more experienced) but I know that's not the point in case.

Basically I get that it's fine that most people might enjoy Do Bong Soon than Tomorrow With You, but let us fans wallow in self pity bc of the ratings in peace, okay?

AMH has made the company all by himself while YSJ made company by trick, go to the future, see what land gonna make money. DBS is cute. She is annoying but she is really cute.

Both of DBS characters are easy to like, easy to understand while TMY characters are messy, their actions are frustrated, the drama can be sad but at least have good reasons to be sad about.

Both of the drama start at the same rating 3.8%, so their star quality and marketing was the same at the beginning.

0

@Chi I really couldn't get your comparisons. You think the leads in SWDBS are more likeable, because you liked that drama more. Like, duh? Of course you'd like the characters in a show that you like, and vice versa.

For example, I'd come up with a totally opposite comparison. DBS's acting like a kid all the time and not being able to control her powers got on my nerves and I actually dropped the drama. Also, the drama felt like specifically formulated for ratings, like "let's put some gay ambiguity here, a cross-dressing there, add a little bit of socially unaware female lead, and some murder mystery too, etc" I felt like they're trying hard for this rating points, and this interferes with my enjoyment from this show. I understand that the show is cracky and fun for most, but not for me.

On the other hand, I liked TWY, it's an unassuming, calm, mature, relationship-centered drama for me, and hence, I liked the characters in it too.

Nevertheless, comparing the leading characters of the two completely different shows based on your feelings about them is not making sense to me.

0

While TWY is a romantic melodrama, it does have its humorous moments - where the humor is so much better done than in many so-called romcoms.

0

That is an offensive comment..

who decides whose taste in drama is more creative or just preference for a not well made drama..

My point is.. if you like something appreciate it by all means but simultaneously do not directly/indirectly look down upon others' choices..

I sensed a criticism in your comment hence replied. If I misunderstood then plz do ignore the comment

Me too so sad for TWY! It was a thrilling and emotional ride. I was crying and squeeing with LJH and SMN along the drama.

I hope more people like it though it's not everyone's cup of tea. I see each conflict is different and progressed, and we have to think a little more to be mindfucked hahaha

None of the new weekend dramas are looking interesting to me so I've been watching some daily dramas instead. I know they can get boring and draggy eventually, but I'm loving Person who Gives happiness and Just Loving You at the moment.
And also, I declare the best (and craziest) hero in k-dramas ever!

I thought she won't put up with Jeong Hwa but she concluded she doesnt want to make herself stress because of her. She said, an adult cannot be changed, same goes to her husband. lol.

The DIL are my favourite in this drama, second DIL is my fav too although at times she is annoying. lmao.

I surprisingly started liking Hee Suk for past few episodes! She was one character i hated so much since the beginning but now she's cracking me up with her ignorance towards everything else and trying to make Chang soo an opera singer

I would want to see sibling fights again. lol. The only son probably should go help their parents or work at restaurant for eg. instead of preparing for exam that he lost his interest already. Spoiler : latest episode hinted that he is a good cook.

Introverted Boss - will this drama ever get 2% on finale episodes?

I am curious what Defendant will get on finale week. Maybe 25% -26%.

SWDBS - A bit overrated. But since this is jTBC drama I am happy since last year most of my fav drama from jTBC.

Crossing my fingers to see Chief Kim get 20%. Looking forward for Radiant Office as well.

I think SWDBS is not overrated, it just popular
I feel like TMY is way overrated

every one on the Bong soon recapped admit it faults but show how they enjoy the good side of its,
it captivated its viewer and I think the rating show that people find it funny, romantic and some find it weird or stay for the couple

in TMY, almost all praise it to high heaven, said that no one understand this perfectly well made drama while more people don't care,

overrated means people rate it more than it deserved, not high rating show can be overrated, like Moon Lovers and high rating so too like OHY and Goblin

TLDR : SWDBS is just popular

Required fields are marked *

I am actually disagreeing with the use of term overrated, because some show just popular without being a perfect show but successful enough to gained audience that will stay for a long time like goong or autumn tale or even the infamous boys over flower, they can be bad but not always bad because the appeals for majority stays with their audience.

Overrrated for me is some show also regarded so high more than it should get, it can be popular and not like oh hae young, moon lovers, healer, goblin and also tomorrow with you.

the reason why I say overrated is based on the review and the commenter on the spesific drama,

the popular show will still have the audience who like it and critics it every time it aired but don't lose viewer,
overrated show will boil down to a perfect review by the only handful or many who watched and love it nonetheless and would be likely to deflated all the criticism as
"the viewer don't get it"

I am sorry to be harsh but that is really how I see the review for the drama mentioned.

Required fields are marked *

I dont take it as something harsh, so no worries. We all agree to disagree?

0

This is how I've always considered it:

Overrated= when a show gets higher ratings than you think it deserves

Overhyped= when individual fans hype a show up more than you think it deserves

So certain people finding TWY overhyped by fans, I can understand. But it's definitely underrated when it comes to viewership ratings. I'm not saying it deserves Goblin's ratings, but it does deserve move than 1%.

0

I agree with that distinction, Chandler.

I've always disliked both terms, however. I guess I just like what I like, and if others have other preferences that are reflected in ratings and/or fan passion, great.

0

In my opinion, if someone gets something out of a show, then that show has value (if only to them). Popular shows, even if they have flaws, must be giving entertainment to a bunch of people in order to be popular, and therefore they have value in that regard. But by the same token, a show without majority appeal but with a small devoted fanbase also has value, because those few people are enjoying it a lot. So I don't actually think it makes sense to say that a show is either overrated or overhyped, because both ratings and hype just reflect that someone is finding value in that show.

In any case (and this is just a general comment, not directed at anyone specifically) it probably pointless to argue about what ratings or hype a show deserves, since everyone will like what they like and dislike what they dislike regardless.

0

Right, i dont know why people say a drama is overrated just because they didnt like it? People have different preferences so if they praise it and has high ratings it doesnt mean its overrated. They must have seen something in the drama that they cannot see in other dramas

So sad to see TWY get low ratings. It was one show I really looked forward to this year and though it is not as I expected it to be, it is still so good.

I specially liked episode 12 because it reminded me of my I liked this how a lot in the beginning. The realism between all the relationships is what shines the most for me which is amazingly conveyed in the dialogues, acting and shots. I especially like Director Kim's acting, he has an amazing control over his actions which does not let him overact. He was very convincing as a normal guy and he is even more convincing as a normal guy gone bad now rather than all those evil people in big corporations who go crazy in other dramas.

I completely agree. I was really excited about Lee Je Hoon and Shin Min Ah being a drama couple, and I was expecting a lot from the story. Now, Yoo So Joon as a character is quite lacking, especially when you compare it to the overall tone of the story. And I wanted to see much more of them in the process of falling in love, but I just adore Song Ma Rin (and obviously SMA too). She's such a relatable, realistic character that I can't help feel really sad when she's hurting and have a big smile on my face when she's happy. Yoo So Joon can be very frustrating but when he shows affection for Ma Rin it just melts my heart.
Overall I faithfully watch TWY because despite its flaws, I have invested a lot in the story. and MaRin is my babygirl of course, so I feel sad that it's not getting the recognition it deserves in the form of ratings, because that what they see first

i haven't really got a crack drama after goblin. or even something that remotely interests me.

SWDBS i thought was perrrfect in the first episode but its sort of losing its sheen. A lot of it feels like disconnected random scenes inserted because they are "cute" -

like DBS sneaking into that man's car and then damaging it when the confrontation was already over with no harm done to any party, no matter how rude that man was. plus the stupid gangster scenes.

So i am going to credit the ratings to the ridiculously adorably actors and the fact that it is the only rom com on air right now

*sigh* ..... i'm going through a terrible drama slump. And i have not seen any promising teaser of any new show.

Perfect Wife like you said no buzz. Probably because no big names.

I thought kdrama mostly known for romance melodrama initially? Like what started the hallyu waves were drama like Autumn In My Heart (2000) Winter Sonata (2002) - all are melodrama. Then romcom drama came like Full House (2004) and My Girl (2005) which were really popular that time.

C4K wasn't really a flop though - material wise, it wasn't probably lacklustre (still enjoyable for probably 60-70% of the show). But ratings wise, it did pretty well for a cable show, esp compared to some of the lower rated ones.

It's strange when I hear dramas that did well (especially against people's expectation) called a flop. I've heard people call Squad 38 and Wife's Affiar flops as well and they both did really well for cable dramas esp for OCN and JTBC.

That's why I said maybe because C4K was the lowest ratings after Entourage for tvn last year, I don't know if it reached the 2% I forgot. And I forgot to mention that I watched it too.

Squad 38 and My Wife's Affair definitely not a flop for cable. Maybe they didnt know difference between cable and public stations.

I was a jTBC girl last year, but I also loved many TVN drama too like Signal, Oh Hae Young, CITT (before the mess), The Good Wife, Dear My Friend, K2 and Drinking Solo. Basically I was a cable girl last year before back to public stations this year. ?

I think it is pretty early to decide the overall perfomance of both stations, although it is correct to say TVN didnt has a good a start while jTBC and OCN rwally had a good start of the year.

Actually the most drama I am looking forward to this year are Season 2 of Age of Youth and Drinking Solo. I hope there will be more news about thesr two drama.

True about TVN being in a little bit of a slump - but I think it's normal. I don't think there's been any channel that has been consistently good forever so I think it comes and goes. I say that 'cos I'm a TVN girl through and through, I love the shows they've been churning out both in dramas and variety.

My only wish is that those people at TVN do not go the ratings-are-more-important-than-content route what with all the success they've had and of course the higher profit targets and stuff. If they start cutting down episodes like other broadcasters have done before I'll cry *crossesfingers*

I just watch the preview for do bong soon next week and I am dying of happiness,

I can see that the cut is abrupt and weird,
but the soundtrack , the culprit revelation,
it just at the right time and the romance,
awww, I am giddy like I felt them,
yeah it looks like a cliche move but again, I think the execution makes up for all,

I feel satisfied with my dose of laugh, happy feeling and absurd things that happen,
I even laugh at the little gangsta vs the big gangsta

I think it because the scene actually use a lot in gangster movie, many scene seems like a familiar parody of some sort,

the hero + the brain in the main romance
the classic one side love with the second lead
the makjang family drama with the family
the comedy with the weird things happen
the mafia movie with all the connection
this is definitely comedy with romance for me

I'm also giddy watching the preview. It's about time Bong-soon shows some appreciation for Min-hyuk. I know this drama has many faults, but I just love how it made me laugh and swoon every week.

Continue to be so happy that SWDBS is receiving so much love. PHS-PBY-JS are such a lovely trio. Makes me smile and laugh every week. ❤️

I am looking forward to Radiant Office although I am less optimistic about its ratings. Maybe there is a chance when Chief Kim ends in 3 weeks' time. But Mystery Queen looks very interesting as well. Anyway, more quality dramas the better for us, ratings notwithstanding.

Yes I hope Radiant Office will do well too. It is a workplace drama too,so far I dont think I will ever get bored with workplace drama.

Mystery Queen - Kwon Sang Woo and Choi Kang Hee shine more in comedy I believe (I never watched KSW in comedic role as I can recall) so this drama hopefully will be a fun ride too.

I am extremely happy with Daylight Savings Time. I wish we could keep it always, every day of the year. Time change is like drama watching ... to each his own. :)

I feel a little disappointed for Voice: yeah i know it's a big success for OCN, their best ratings ever, but seeing that JTBC is getting 8% with a drama as "light" as Strong Woman Do Bong-soon, i would have loved to watch compelling, thrilling, well written for the most part, smartly executed and perfectly acted show like Voice to do better.

I guess quality and ratings are really disconnected in kdramaland. :(

Completely agree, even though Voice has it flaws it is one the best dramas. The characters are very compelling and the cast is top-notch. Voice should by now be in the double digits with its ratings. However, it airs at 10 pm and this genre is hard to sell. Going to miss this show, last episode airs tonight!! Voice fighting!!!!

Just remember that Voice is already the highest-rated OCN drama of all time, and its average so far has passed the 4% mark. That already means a lot.

This happens everywhere, especially in the US television landscape.

It's makes me feel down to, cause Another OCN drama My Beautiful Bride which is so much better than average k-drama is just getting average rating... QUality doesn't mean good rating indeed :(

Really love Defendant despite my sadness that the female leads are sidelined. I hope it reaches ratings higher than Romantic Teacher Dr Kim, hopefully it breaks the 30% mark!

I watched chief kim 2-8 this weekend. It's a bit strange... I felt the humor a bit forced. I love Strong Woman Do Bong Soon though. It's cute ?. Started Father is Strange - I'm really liking it. I don't usually watch weekend dramas, but it has a charm

I wanted to love Tomorrow With You. I tried to wait until it was over but I could not help myself. I was disappointed. The characters are good and the cinematography is excellent However, the story line is lacking and the romance does not leave you breathless. I wanted fireworks but all I got was cotton candy.
I think the drama would have been better if the leading lady was the time traveler instead of the main actor. It would have been a twist to an old story line, time traveling romance. However, I am still going to watch it until the very end.

I think one of the best aspects (MAYBE THE BEST) of TWY is SMA's character, Song Ma Rin. In the beginning of the show she was just bland and shallow, but in the recent episodes I've been applauding her for her courage. and it makes me hate YSJ because he's the one person that keeps hurting her and making her sad. I find myself quite often cursing at him for his actions and words and decisions.
I'm staying for her, even though i don't trust the writers to let her find the peace of heart and happiness she deserves

maybe the real reason i can't actually like SWDBS is Bong Soon's hairstyle, it's so annoying!!! Just kidding haha, that's on of the reasons, the most shallow if you want. I really wanted to like the show because of my beloved Ji Soo but i don't really feel much for his character GookDu, so i just wanna see what's gonna happen to the sick killer. how are they gonna catch him? will they ever?

I think Ji Soo needs to choose dramas that depict in more detail the story of his character, so that I can find them more relatable

I'm also loving Tomorrow With You! I don't remember the last time I was this interested or anticipating the next episodes for a drama.
Watching an episode causes me to have different emotions. One minute I'm crying the next I'm laughing and screaming at the screen.
Still wondering how the last 4 episodes will play out.

SWDBS is far from perfect. But it is very entertaining. Which is a key for me when watching any show. Forget lapses of logic or horrible editing. AMH, DBS and IGD is making me happy. ?

Im watching Rebel. It is in steady pace now, but what makes me stay is the amazing cast. But so far, it is not a drama that you want to rewatch.
SWDBS, a bit overrated. So far staying cause I like light drama in the mids of work headache. And, park hyun sik caught my attention. I still love Kim Bok Joo wayyyy more. But we'll see, maybe it is too early to tell.
Just finished Voice, what makes this show alive is the bad guy. He is awesome. I skip alot, i found the writer put too much unnecessary plot. But when the bad guy shows, man.. He is good.
Lastly.. UnHappy Daylight Saving. I agree.. Why the heck this is still a thing? It messes me up. I dont see any benefit of us keeping changing 1hour twice a year.

Me too, I am so very sad that TWY has such low ratings -:(( I have been in such a slump since WFKBJ and LOTBS, but because of TWY, I'm slowly getting out of it. I love everythg abt the show and I find it interesting that the ratings are so low ( why, oh why??). I also love Perfect Wife and I also dnt understand why it's not popular even here on DB. I'm not into any of the remaing shows this year, I'm not the crime/thriller type to love Defendant, voice and all the other ones and although I was looking forward to SWDBS it is just leaving me wanting more ... or rather less ( too over the top for me)

it hurts me when i read WFKBJ or now SWDBS 'over-hyped'. Its a term i dont like. when you love a drama you wish everyone else joins the wagon- but i know not everyone likes the same fruit. I can accept that but it'd be nice if people dont purposely state how much they dislike it or how 'overated it is'.
The shows that didnt catch my interest or wasnt my cup of tea i generally dont comment on it. Even those that are suffering, i still wish their's niche audience for them; som group who appreciates the drama and that the ratings dont tank too bad. Realistically, ratings IS important in Korea.
Anyway agree to disagree

For now i'm really enjoying Father is Strange.
The family is endearing and funny - truly funny. I love the father, he has a good dynamic with his wife ad his children. he seems sweet and caring. I can't picture him having an affair. Lee joon must not be his child. Surely his friend's boy.
Should we talk about the 4 siblings and their awesome fight ? i hope we will see more of it. It's really handy to define a group of people to see them pulling hair and calling names.

I'm only on ep 3, and twists are already on their way, i can't wait to see more !
