I’m Not a Robot: Episodes 11-12

The tiny circle of people who know Min-kyu’s secret is growing, and what they’re lacking in number, they make up in might. But the more deeply he trusts them, the more scared I am of how betrayed he’s going to feel when he discovers their secret. And as Jia falls for him more and more, will it compromise her robot identity?

EPISODE 11: “I want to kiss”

The Santa Maria team makes their way to Min-kyu’s mansion minus Baek-gyun, who won’t make it back tonight. Pi tells Min-kyu that they’ve come to take Aji-3. Trying to stall them, Min-kyu asks them to stay for dinner.

Pi shuts him down, and at a loss, he cries out, “Korean beef!” and a whole assortment of costly delicacies that make Hok-tal and Ssan-ip’s resolve crumble. At the table, Min-kyu explains that he made some extra dishes especially for “Researcher 1” (Hok-tal) and “Researcher 2” (Ssan-ip).

“You… don’t know our names?” Hok-tal asks. “Do I need to?” Min-kyu replies, undoing all their goodwill.

Jia urgently takes the clueless boy aside and tells him that to ask a favor, he needs to build closeness with them, not just feed them. She advises him to have real conversation with them and answer their questions frankly.

He returns to the table, and with a glance at Jia to reassure himself, he stiltingly asks Ssan-ip what his parents do. Ssan-ip replies that they run a laundromat in the US, and asks Min-kyu about his parents.

“They’re lying in their graves, side by side,” Min-kyu replies, a pained smile pasted on his face. Oof. Everyone stops eating. Hok-tal asks what happened to them, and Min-kyu tells them about the car accident in quite horrific detail, his tone all the while casual.

“Only I survived,” he finishes, awkward smile still in place. Aww somebody give him a hug right now. The researchers’ jaws literally drop as they finally look at him like he’s a person.

Director Yoon tells Yoo-chul that Baek-gyun is looking for new investors, and they set their plan in motion. While Baek-gyun has dinner with some potential investors, the curly-haired half of Yoon’s bumbling men-in-black pretends to be a server and swipes their business cards. He sends the information back to Yoon.

At the mansion, the researchers have scraped the plates clean and Jia whispers that this is the moment to reel them in. But Min-kyu being Min-kyu, he once again undoes it all by speaking down at them about how lucky they are to have such great food. Goodbye, goodwill!

Min-kyu doesn’t understand why they immediately make to leave. “Did we ask you to do this?” Pi asks. Unable to hold back, Jia steps in and tells them to at least have the manners to do the washing-up.

Jia approaches Pi while she washes the dishes and asks if they can’t stay: “He’s not strange… just a little brusque. He’s really tender-hearted inside.” Pi says Baek-gyun’s mind is already made up, and that it’s better to leave Min-kyu on a harsh note.

As she finishes the dishes, Robovac breaks down in front of her.

A shoulder to lean on

Min-kyu calls Jia to his room. He sits her down beside him and drops his head to her shoulder. He says he doesn’t know how to open their hearts to him.

“It’s hard. It’s too hard,” he whispers. “You tried your best,” she says quietly, putting her arm around him in comfort.

Min-kyu gathers himself up and prepares to give things one more shot, but he’s horrified to come out to a scene of the team apparently dismembering his beloved Robovac. Yelling, he grabs his pretty from them and asks it with real worry if it’s okay.

The team watches agape, and even Jia is surprised at his near-panic. Pi explains that it was broken and that they were about to fix it. Min-kyu won’t let go, and they wrench it away from him.

It’s fixed in no time, and they’ve even upgraded it to have a cute face—happy when the filter’s clean, sad when it’s dirty, Pi says. In joy and relief, Min-kyu seizes it up and kisses it. The team is shocked by the realization that he isn’t a pervert after all, and even Pi softens.

Now that the team’s misunderstandings have been put to bed, they welcome Min-kyu’s hospitality with enthusiasm, and Min-kyu shyly says he’s got some chicken to go with their beer.

With only a pile of chicken bones left in front of them and all of them a little drunk, Min-kyu asks why they rejected his money. Ssan-ip slurs that Baek-gyun had already made his decision, and Min-kyu mumbles that they have great faith in him.

“The one who trusts no one, cannot gain the trust of anyone else,” Pi quotes.

Min-kyu’s eyes close in sleep. Jia, who’s been in “standby” all this time, catches him and rests his head on her shoulder.

The next morning, Baek-gyun heads back after what turned out to be a fruitless night, since the potential investors pulled out after getting wind of his scandal in the US. Just then, he gets a call from a new investor.

Min-kyu wakes up alone, and calls anxiously for Aji-3. Meanwhile, Jia and the rest of the team fail to sneak back to the barn before Baek-gyun. They claim they were out for a walk, and Jia says she came to pick up her suitcase.

Baek-gyun tells the team that they’ve got a new investor, and they’re to give a demonstration with Aji-3 immediately. Pi argues that the robot’s not mobile again yet, but Baek-gyun says they’ll just use a wheelchair, since everything else is working fine.

It seems that the new “investor” is Curly. The other guy—his uncle?—seems to be the brains of the operation, and Brains instructs Curly in a needlessly elaborate plan to kidnap Aji-3, ha.

Min-kyu hears from a KM company connection that Baek-gyun was defamed by a colleague in the States, and he gave up his research to the aggressor in order to protect his team.

Jia hangs up the pink dress for the last time. As she heads out, Baek-gyun offers her a lift, but a knock at the door makes them freeze. Min-kyu wants a word, so Baek-gyun goes outside to meet him.

Baek-gyun immediately informs Min-kyu that he has a new investor. Min-kyu reveals that he knows what happened to Baek-gyun in the US, and promises to help him regain his reputation.

“Who are you to do that? I’ll restore my name with my own strength,” Baek-gyun says in cold anger. And if that’s what Min-kyu came to say, he can get lost, he adds.

“Just as Aji-3 said, I’m really not good at talking,” Min-kyu says, half to himself. Rolling up his sleeve, he seizes Baek-gyun’s hand. The other man tries to shake him off, but Min-kyu holds fast. His reaction kicks in fast and spreads up his arm, neck and face. Baek-gyun stares.

Struggling to speak, Min-kyu whispers, “Help me… hyung.”

Via videolink in the mansion, Dr. Oh tells Baek-gyun that the robot that he made saved a life. Though this new knowledge clearly weighs on Baek-gyun’s mind, it doesn’t stop him leaving. With Aji-3 loaded into the van and the barn emptied, a stricken Min-kyu watches them leave.

Inside the van, it’s silence and sad faces all around. Behind the wheel, Baek-gyun wears a complex expression. Before he left, Min-kyu had shown him all his army call-up letters and dozens of allergy medications which he kept trying in hope of a cure.

“I know they call me ‘Three-part Baton’. They probably can’t even imagine that it’s a weapon to protect my life,” he had said. He’d expected to live the rest of his life like that—until he met Aji-3, whom he called a miracle.

“We’re going back,” Baek-gyun says. Everyone lights up as he turns the van around.

At the gates to Min-kyu’s estate, Baek-gyun offers Jia the chance to refuse, but she eagerly accepts (to his disgruntlement, lol). To the rest of the team, Baek-gyun announces that they misunderstood Min-kyu. Now that the misunderstanding’s been cleared up and Min-kyu’s promised to provide the investment, they don’t need to leave.

Baek-gyun and Pi talk privately, and she opposes their return. He denies it’s to stay close to Jia, but she also worries that his reputation could be ruined forever if their ruse were found out. She adds that everything they achieved in the test-run with Min-kyu was Jia’s doing.

Baek-gyun disagrees: Since Min-kyu believed Jia was Aji-3, what they achieved was Aji-3’s doing. “Pi, I want to see this test to the end. We did a tremendous thing. That’s the very reason we made a robot,” he says.

Director Yoon reports the failure of their plan to Yoo-chul, and instructs Brains and Curly to bring Aji-3 by any means necessary.

Still at his window when the van returns, Min-kyu breaks into a huge smile. They undertake a new contract, but Min-kyu’s dismayed when Baek-gyun talks casually to him, calling himself “hyung.” Baek-gyun adds that as the youngest of them all, he can think of himself as having three new hyungs and a noona. Min-kyu’s expression is absolutely priceless. Hahaha, you did it to yourself!

Baek-gyun has one last condition before he agrees to sign: that Min-kyu promises not to lay a finger on Aji-3. Min-kyu has no choice but to agree. Baek-gyun returns to the barn to find Jia holding her broken lamp. He awkwardly offers to fix it for her, though he says he’ll name his price afterwards.

Meanwhile, Min-kyu can’t get over the team treating him like their maknae and screams in frustration, haha. Jin-bae, there for the signing of the contract, tries to leave quietly, but Min-kyu gives him one more job, to find someone called Jang Doo-sang in relation to Santa Maria.

Min-kyu comes to the barn to collect Jia, and says from now on, he’ll pick her up every day. As they ride the golfcart back, he instructs her to minimize her movements to prolong her battery life.

“Is it because… I’m a treasure?” she asks cutesily. He scowls at her and threatens a scolding. Ha, not that far gone, eh? She sasses that he can’t scold her without a reason. “I have a reason!” he retorts. Suuure you do.

He snaps his fingers for Friend Mode, and complains all the way inside about how terrible it was for him to wake up alone and that he’ll sell her for scrap metal. She rolls her eyes. He also orders her to stay within sight at all times whenever he’s meeting someone, though he doesn’t elaborate why.

He orders her to clean a particular room, and leaves her muttering after him. But aw, it’s “Pretty’s Room,” full of new clothes and accessories. Master of the backhanded compliment, Min-kyu says pink doesn’t suit her, and also he’s only giving her this stuff because he doesn’t want to be embarrassed to be seen with her.

A pretty new dress for Pretty

Min-kyu stares when Jia emerges in a new dress. “Do I look funny?” she asks. “You’re really pretty,” he replies. She’s disappointed when he stops himself from patting her on the head like he normally does, and he explains his promise to Baek-gyun.

Scowling, Jia thinks to herself, My body belongs to me, why does he [Baek-gyun] get any say in it?

Min-kyu steps closer to her, with something to say. “I want to kiss,” he tells her.

EPISODE 12: “This is when you must kiss”

“I want to kiss… Ri-el,” Min-kyu says. He tells Jia that he plans to go on three dates, and on the third, he’ll kiss her and propose. “But the kiss is the problem,” he wails, saying it’ll be his first kiss and he has no idea when or how he should do it. Jia sighs.

Meanwhile, Baek-gyun finishes fixing the lamps. He smiles as they light up, but wonders what use they are.

The next day, he tells Jia to wear the original pink dress and says that’s his price, but she refuses. Plus, she tells him, their real problem is that Min-kyu wants help for his kiss. “It’s not like I can practice with him,” she says.

Baek-gyun nearly loses his mind and volunteers the rest of the team to help. “Impossible,” Ssan-ip declares on their behalf. Haha. “Isn’t there anyone who knows about this kind of stuff?” Baek-gyun appeals.

Ask and ye shall receive: Enter Sun-hye, in a swirl of glamor. She introduces herself to the team, but is distracted by the robot. Amazed at the likeness, she says darkly that she’d have broken it already. “Then we’ll sue you,” Pi warns.

Sun-hye turns away from Pi’s icy gaze and invites Hok-tal and Ssan-ip to her coffee shop, “Summer Snow.” Bedazzled, Hok-tal stammers that it’s an illogical name. Sun-hye replies dramatically that life is illogical.

Before they meet Min-kyu, Jia warns Sun-hye that she’ll have to treat Jia like another person, not a robot. Min-kyu’s skeptical of Sun-hye’s qualification as a kissing guru, but a recital of her apparent credentials (and success rate) from Jia reassures him.

The lesson gets underway and Sun-hye says that a couple goes through three stages before kissing. First, they have attraction, then a romantic moment, which leads lastly to skinship.

She says most people need three dates to get there, but Min-kyu has an advantage because of his prior relationship with Ri-el, so he can go straight for the kiss. In sum, three dates are three opportunities to get his kiss.

Min-kyu’s challenge is to make Ri-el see him as a man. “And for that, you need sexual tension,” Sun-hye elaborates, saying kissing is all about moving at the exact perfect moment. She indicates Jia and asks Min-kyu if he’s ever imagined kissing her.

“No. Never,” he replies. Aw, Jia’s face falls, though Sun-hye says it’s a relief. Min-kyu nearly catches her slip but she covers by quickly instructing them to follow her.

Hok-tal and Ssan-ip spy on the kissing lesson from the bushes, armed with popcorn. Ha! Sun-hye instructs Jia and Min-kyu to pretend they’re on a date and go for a stroll together. All of a sudden, she shoves Jia into Min-kyu, and he catches her in his arms as she loses her balance. Skinship achieved!

Learning how to kiss

After a few tense beats, Sun-hye asks, “Is this friend still not a woman to you?” Min-kyu quickly drops Jia and says it’s impossible: “I can never see this friend as a woman.” He wants Sun-hye to get to the point, and she says that was it—that moment he just experienced was sexual tension, and that’s when he has to kiss. She leaves him with one last tip to take an umbrella if it rains.

Yoo-chul’s dad sympathizes with Yoo-chul for losing Ri-el to Min-kyu. They agree that if Yoo-chul had been the majority shareholder, Ri-el’s father would have courted him instead. Dad asks how he can help, and Yoo-chul tells him he plans to get Aji-3 first.

Min-kyu picks up Jia’s novelty umbrella and heads out for his date, but he’s surprised to see Baek-gyun accompanying Jia. The professor points out that Min-kyu will be wrapped up in his date so he needs to look after Aji-3.

Elsewhere, Ssan-ip drags an unwilling Hok-tal to Sun-hye’s coffee shop, and she immediately likes that Hok-tal asks for a latte when everyone else asks for Americanos. They speculate about where Min-kyu’s going for his date, and Sun-hye says anywhere that isn’t crowded is good.

So it’s bad that Min-kyu’s brought Ri-el to the same busy promenade he was at before with Jia. Sun-hye also tells the boys that you shouldn’t go somewhere you went with a previous partner, since you’d only end up comparing the two.

Though doubtful about Min-kyu’s choice of place, Ri-el goes with it, but it’s painfully embarrassing to watch him repeat each thing he did with Jia, except it’s not at all to Ri-el’s taste. Jia watches him pick out the “pretty” baseball cap for Ri-el, but she doesn’t want to mess up her hair.

The date-course is a redo for Jia too. While she’s with Baek-gyun, she constantly looks back at Min-kyu. Both couples reach the bandstand, which Ri-el finds too noisy. Min-kyu has to shush one stallholder who recognizes him from the other day. “You were with another woman!” he exclaims.

In a coffee shop next, Baek-gyun positions himself to give Jia cover so she can eat and drink without Min-kyu seeing her. A few tables away, Curly spies on them and gapes when he sees her take a sip. He tells Brains when he joins him, but Brains doesn’t believe him.

Jia’s busy gazing at Min-kyu’s table. Min-kyu notices Ri-el’s feet blistered from her shoes and runs out a moment, returning with a pair of comfortable shoes. Though she finds the shoes unattractive, she’s touched by the gesture, and he puts them on her feet.

Baek-gyun comments that the couple suit each other and Jia unhappily agrees. Ri-el notices that Min-kyu keeps looking over at them, and makes the same observation, that they suit each other. Min-kyu isn’t so sure, though.

At their table, Baek-gyun reminisces that they used to go on dates like this, which Jia immediately refutes. Flustered, he argues, “We did! Think about it carefully!”

While Ssan-ip takes a bathroom break, Sun-hye asks Hok-tal about his nickname. He explains it’s from Planet of the Apes (Hoksong Talchul in Korean), which she finds unbelievable for a handsome face like his. He stares at her besotted, unaware of his milk-mustache.

Tired of watching the other couple, Jia asks when they can leave. But Baek-gyun says they can’t go until Min-kyu’s date is over. A cyclist passes suddenly, and Min-kyu sees Baek-gyun pull her close, out of harm’s way.

Lightning flashes, and Baek-gyun asks Jia to wait while he runs and buys an umbrella. Curly takes the opportunity to pass by Jia and stick her with a skewer. To his surprise, the skewer breaks and she doesn’t react at all, which finally convinces him that she really is a robot after all.

Ri-el gets a call and has to go, which scuppers Min-kyu’s gameplan. When he asks if she can’t wait until it starts raining, she gives him a weird look, and turns down the umbrella. Smiling, she says today’s date was better than the cocoa-date.

Left alone, Min-kyu looks sadly over at Jia. As it starts to pour, he shelters her under his umbrella. “This is my most cherished umbrella. Know that it’s an honor for you to share it,” he says. She smiles, and he presses the button that makes it transparent.

They look up at the rain, and he tells her that when he does this, it eases the suffocation in his chest. He wonders who came up with such an idea. “A genius? A master craftsman? I want to meet the person who made this umbrella,” he says.

Jia gazes at him, heart in her eyes. Suddenly, someone shoves past her, nearly knocking her down, and Min-kyu catches her, just like before.

Now only inches apart, Jia tells him, “This is the moment when you have to kiss.” Leaning forward, she touches her lips to his, and presses the button that makes the umbrella darken.

This is your cue to kiss me

COMMENTS

I really like that Min-kyu has no confusion whatsoever about how he feels about Jia as a robot, and how he feels about a woman. They’re totally different leagues (and Jia knows it, as does Sun-hye) and in that sense, Sun-hye’s tests reassure me: He won’t ever romance a robot, even if he can easily consider her his friend. It’s interesting because in relationships, we often love the friendship aspect of them as much as the romantic aspects, but there’s a hard and fast line here that the ordinary mind simply doesn’t cross. As much as we may love our babies inanimate possessions, romancing them is beyond ridiculous: Romance, and subsequently intimacy, are things you do exclusively with other humans.

So in that context, I get Jia kissing him, even at risk of her robot identity (although there’s also a good argument for it fitting in with her robot behavior, with AI’s adaptive learning). It’s not only that she’s been repeatedly friendzoned (or is that robotzoned?) all hour and desperate to be a woman to him, it’s also that it’s been tearing her up on multiple levels watching him with Ri-el, for all the reasons TeriYaki mentions. I admit I actually quite like Ri-el, what little we’ve seen of her: She’s smart, plain-speaking and practical. On the other hand, I dislike Min-kyu and Ri-el together, and I don’t think it’s really Ri-el’s fault. Min-kyu doesn’t give her room to be herself—which is a shame, because although she doesn’t have feelings for him, she could still be a friend. But it’s like it never occurred to him that she had grown up and become somebody he didn’t know anymore. And to be fair, I think it honestly hasn’t. For him, time seems to have stood still within the bounds of his estate. Some of you astutely noted last week the fairytale motifs in this show, and I think we can also add Sleeping Beauty to that list.

Min-kyu is an odd mixture of cynicism and inexperience that is a result of his unusually isolated growing-up. It leaves him clueless (sometimes embarrassingly) and clinging to the familiar, which naturally extends to the way he feels about and relates to Ri-el. He’s clinging to the memory of a first love, and frankly, I don’t think the reality even then is what he remembers—as kids, they were friends. In the absence of new experiences, new friends, and better memories, she’s become a beacon for him in an otherwise bleak heart, but the Ri-el in his head was never the real Ri-el. So far, reality isn’t making a dent on his perceptions, which I find a little fascinating, because this is the same brain that saw people turning into monsters.

Given his condition, we already know his brain perhaps functions in a different way to most, and its protective mechanisms are quite extraordinary. So I wonder if maintaining his illusions (and consequently rejecting contradictory input) is his brain’s way of trying to protect him once again. But I also fully admit that I might be overthinking it, as it can be explained much more easily: He simply doesn’t have enough experience, especially in romantic situations, to be able to read social cues and body language correctly, so short of Ri-el outright rejecting him, he might miss all the other signs. Buuuut: He watches TV! Shouldn’t that prepare him for real human contact?

Speaking of human contact, the meal at the beginning was really something. The scientists are an enigma to him because in his experience of life, it’s only money that moves people. And given how everyone always wants a piece of him—or rather, his money—his mistaken belief has a foundation, though what it really reveals is that he apparently hasn’t ever met decent people. What he learns with the Santa Maria team is how to give a piece of his real, inner self. But it was so painful to watch. In that short time, I feel like we saw Min-kyu cut wide open, guts everywhere. He takes Jia’s lessons so literally that it makes my heart ache a little. He doesn’t just make himself vulnerable to his guests, he also shows an almost devastating level of trust in Jia. How much will it hurt him when he finds out they’ve all been lying to him?

I’m really digging this grudging new truce between Min-kyu and Baek-gyun. I’m fairly sure that he was sincere in that moment he first called Baek-gyun “hyung,” but it was pretty great to see him get owned by the team after that. Min-kyu is someone so used to calling all the shots, being obeyed, and having his way, that it’s never going to be unsatisfying to see him bested in a friendly match. I admit it looks like his childhood friendship with Yoo-chul can’t be saved, and that was probably wishful thinking on my part, but this new one between him and Baek-gyun promises to be even more satisfying. As much as they’re trying to one-up each other, there’s a fundamental respect growing between them, and the beginnings of real trust, thanks to Min-kyu quite literally putting his life in Baek-gyun’s hands. That’s why Baek-gyun came back: because Min-kyu personally affected him. Despite his lack of relationship maturity, I think we’ve learned enough to know he’s a generally good guy, even if he does sometimes makes bad choices like giving his robot his ex-girlfriend’s face…

Once he pulled out the umbrella and started raving about the genius of whoever designed it, I knew she was a goner. Especially after he spent his whole "date" trying to recreate the feelings he had when he was hanging out with her.

I'm really enjoying this show, especially the subtext. It has so many layers I can peel back.

Her conversation with the Professor was so amazing:
Him: You don't have to do this ( pretending to be Aji 3) if you don't want to.
Her: Do you know this is the first time you asked me?
Me: Is the entire point. I mean, the guy built a robot with your face to obey him completely.

I particularly loved that scene where Min Kyu goes to pat her head and then pulls back because he has the no-touching agreement and she thinks, "What the hell? It's my body!"

Basically, every male spent the whole episode arguing over who would get to touch her or own her and it was only the female scientist who pointed out that the issue here was fraud. Min Kyu is being lied to.

I also think there's something really interesting going in with Ji A. That in a way she finds the robot persona liberating. She can kiss the guy she clearly likes and then put it down to her programming. "Oh, this is the part where I was told we should kiss. So I will kiss you." It's like she's using the Aji 3 persona to be free of her social pressures and just do and say what she wants.

I really hope this show stays this good. I'm loving it.

The look she gave him when he didn't pat her head--- pure disappointment and utter annoyance to the reason why he couldn't touch her anymore.

I'm also loving every scene they give us. But I do hope they show us more Min-kyu and Ji-ah interactions in the coming episodes. I need Min-kyu to officially meet her (as a human) and be out of his mind because she resembles Aji-3 XD

YES. I love how Ji-A says "It's my body". I think this little scene here explains a lot about what I love about her as a character.

Thank you, @saya <3
I absolutely enjoyed how you recapped the episodes. It's filled with timely side comments that I remember saying/doing as well.

Also, it was a thrill reading the comment section. I love how you focused on everyone's relationship with everyone. Hmm actually, it feels like the whole thing is centered on Min-kyu and his interactions with everyone in the show---- which I totally appreciate! I tend to be really biased when watching a show so when I read recaps, I want my favorite character (s) to get a lot of thoughts from the recapper and of course, my fellow beanies. Hee. I'm glad Yoo Seung Ho is the male lead and he's playing this kind of role, I get spoiled with a lot of interesting thoughts every recaps.

I look forward to AJi 3's journey of "How To Get Out of Being Robozoned" XD Fighting!

Time slot changed?? It's good,I guess. We don't need a comment-field competition later with Hwayugi buzzing up!
Omo, this is my favorite episode so far! Though I had been pinning for this drama even before it started, it was becoming sorta disappointing to me,because it started to become stuck in the mediocre bog... not being here nor there, and I'd been unable to pinpoint why. Now I think I know. The characters didn't have any REAL interaction among them, other than the main two. That "Help me hyung..." line is what exactly the drama lacked!
Boy,when it finally happened didn't it do the magic. \0_0/ (It's not bromance that we lacked. It's mutual interaction between those-who-lived-together-but-apart-in-the-same-property. The real bromance is still waiting out there to happen.)
Hok-tal and Ssan-ip watching kissing lessons with popcorn..lololololol. Me too bros ;-) (not literally).
And awww...am I sensing a Pi--Baek-gyung romance there??? Curly-Curly ship go!!! You two are a good match!

I am totally shipping them too! I sensed that pi might have some feelings for Baek gyun in the first episode, when baek gyun asked her to answer the phone (from min kyu, I think) because it's better if a woman answers and she asked if he considers her a woman and he would say never mind and answer it himself and she would look heartbroken. Poor girl. I hope he realizes it soon and starts liking her back too.

I agree with you about the "Help me Hyung..." line and how having MK interact with the Santa Maria team added some spark to the drama. I am uncomfortable with the idea of MK feeling so completely dependent on Jia/Aji-3, so it's nice to see him befriend (sorta...) other people and reaching out. What MK really needs is a circle of friends. I hope, by the end, we can have another birthday party on the outdoor patio, like the one he had before his parents were killed in the car accident.

I feel like this drama will get 'Coffee Prince' with the robot thing.
I have like 2% interest in the other storylines, but that's ok, since the showknows what we came for and it's delivering.

Only thing I would like is a bit more character development for JiA, since we all know she is in the low position there.

I have been thinking "Coffee Prince" since last week's episodes. I think Minkyu's logical mind wants him to prevent himself from falling in love with a robot, which is very much similar to Hankyul's struggle when he was starting to develop feelings for Eunchan, who he assumed was also a heterosexual guy like him.

Love the recap and the episodes! I have a couple of thoughts to add. First about Jia: she is placed in an interesting conundrum - she wants to keep staying by MK's side as a human, but telling him the truth would likely push them apart for good, with him going back to solitary self-confinement. It is important to note that while she has been in love with him for a while now, she finally ends up expressing it is because of MK's admiration for Jia-the human. He appreciates her for who she is, so their love actually stands a chance; can't blame her for going for it. Second, about MK's viewing robots as non-romantic entities: I 100% believe that he means it, but the sexual tension is there several times in this episode and it is definitely not just on Jia's side. I think he is already drawn to her romantically at some subconscious level. Lastly, Pi is right to say that the deception will only end up in disaster; that's because what MK likes about Aji3 is almost entirely Jia. Aji3 is pretty much always in chingu-mode by now and the reasons why he made a friend after 15y is because the way Jia responds emotionally to his pain. Even if they manage to repair the robot and make the swap he will be invariably disappointed by the real thing.

I'm actually interested in how much of this Aji3 is absorbing. She's connected to JiA at all times and is probably processing all this data. At this stage, I'm very interested in what the actual robot is making of all of this. I'm wondering if she will attempt to replicate that behaviour. I'd like to see the team realising that the robot's interactions are radically changed by her connection to Jia.

That's such an intriguing thought! I do wonder what would happen if Aji3 replaces Jia. Would MG notice the difference? I would say definitely. Even if, like you said, Aji3 would attempt to replicate her behavior. Aji3 wouldn't deliver it 100% accurate and I do believe if that happens, MG would notice something's up.

@bdxpelik Oh yes, totally! There was this scene where he asked her to go to 'Friend mode' and she was suddenly prim and proper when she asked, "What do you want~?" so he reminded her, "Why are you so elegant? Be yourself."

that scene was so precious ;; he was all eye-smiles when he asked her to be in friend mode and when she didn't act the same way he was used to, he noticed immediately, dropped his beautiful eye-smile and sort or mini-scolded her.

Some key data is missing for the AI: Aji3 has access to what Jia sees and hears but not to Jia's associated emotional state and that is most of fake-Aji3's magic. Also a lot of the communication going on between KM and Jia is completely without words - like when RI abandoned him mid-date he looked at Jia as in 'yet another failure' and she looked back in an 'I'm so sorry' way... That's why I said that the swap back cannot work out.

I wasn't referring to them being swapped out. Obviously Aji3 is NOT Jia and, as you said, Jia is almost exclusively in chingu-mode now. I was just interested in finding out how Aji3's observations of Jia's behaviour would be interpreted by the robot and how it would change her behaviour. I was hoping for a scene e.g. where the Professor gives her an order and she rebels or goes against his programming. Also how would she respond to Min Kyu after the input she's been getting?

I dont think the show will have time to adress that..It would be very very interesting, and I also wonder, but realistically they don't have time to address such changes also in the robot. Of course they have to do something with it, but she cannot become a clon of Jia. Something is gotta happen... LOL

I haven't been paying attention to Aji3 for a while. This line of thinking makes me curious of how much the robot is inputting her system. Hmmm... I hope the show gives us an answer!

there's a lot of fake-vs-real going 'round: it's not only that MK has a real relationship with a fake robot but he also has a fake relationship with a real girl. When it comes to Re-il he has constructed this elaborate fantasy of his great first love and that is completely obscuring the reality. The fact is that -as grownups- they don't know or even like each other much. Also Ri-el actually bores him (pro romance tip: if you spend half a date staring at another woman while said date chats away, then it's probably a sign to call it quits).

I don't understand why BG doesn't want MK's funds! It doesn't make sense to me just because he thinks MK is a pervert! If it wasn't JA who's there playing a robot would he care! Didn't he think of his teammates, they're struggling financially with him and because of his selfishness and obsession he wants them to suffer more!, also he's fraud they lied to MK, even JA is lying, Min Kyu has trust issues it will be a mess when he finds out that he's been lied at by everyone around him, it will hurt him.
Despite that I don't hate BG he's a good guy, and he really liked JA but he has communication issues plus he's selfish.

The only person who doesn't lie to his face is his first love (at least for now) she admitted that she marrying him because her father told her to, and he's the best option for marriage, she was straight forward with him.
Well I hope he will find out soon that JA is not a robot and they won't drag it for long.

Min-kyu is simply a kid, he is still a baby. I can hardly imagine how will survive to be kissed by what he thinks is a robot, and how he will survive later when he gets to know she is actually human.
I really really wonder: will he develope then his allergy? Because that will prove that it is indeed a psicosomatic illness, and not anything real.

I think he won't have an allergic reaction to her, because he will know that he already had plenty of contact with her and didn't react. What I'm really curious is, if Jia is replaced with AG3, will he have the same immunity to his allergy that he has when he's with Jia?

@mandy Hi! I think what @blnmom is asking is how Min-kyu will react to human touch if the real Aji-3 is WITH him--- not the one touching him. As we can see now, fake Aji-3 is giving him immunity to human touch just by being anywhere near him (highly effective when she's smiling at him *A*) so the question is... will he have the same resistance to his human allergy if it's the real Aji-3 with/comforting him?

I think what he needs for him to be cured it is to feel loved. Jia loves him Aji3 cannot so no it won't work at least not on the long term. Given he's so out of touch with his emotions that dr Oh had to label his feelings for Aji3 as 'friendship' I doubt he'll work that out for a while.

2

Ah, sorry I totally misunderstood that comment!

I think the reason Min-kyu can touch anyone when he’s around Jia is because he trusts that she can protect him if need be. Basically, I think his allergy has a direct correlation with his trust in people. So my guess is, if Aji-3 replaces Jia without him finding out the truth, there would be no difference in that he can still touch people without getting a reaction. It’s psychological anyway.

But if he finds out Jia and Santa Maria deceived him, that’s when I’d like to see his reaction to both Jia herself and people around him when she’s around. Logically, the allergy should come back. But I’m not exactly too huge on logic in this drama lol.

2

I agree with what @Mandy said. It is a matter of trust and when he knows that they all deceive him, he will suffer and develop the allergy even against Jia. Maybe he will even be so upset, he won't feel too much in love anymore. But set aside the logic (from which I also don't expect too much), I hope he won't suffer awfully. I will cry with him, because really... he has a sad story to tell.

0

@javinne - I think by the time he finds out she's been deceiving him, he'd be too far out to stop loving her. Maybe I'm romaticizing a bit lol, but I think his anger and feelings of being betrayed can't override what he really feels for her.

That doesn't mean I don't expect real angst though. I said this in a previous comment too - I really want his allergy to return even against Jia, but that despite him not exactly needing her anymore, he'd still look for her. Even if he's mad at himself for doing so, I want him to still want her in his life. If we compare this to Beauty and the Beast, even when Beast thought Bella betrayed him and left the castle, he still loved her. I want it to be similar.

2

Beauty and the beast is s good example, wow. I also really hope the show will surprise us with a clever or at least logical reaction, followed by them being openly and honestly themselves and with each other. With the bad guys trying to kidnap Aji3, I am sure they could have plenty of action and stress and angst to go through. It will be better if they are in the same page with an open heart.

1

Yoo Seung Ho should stick to rom-coms hes much better in it than melo, I think this role is his best. I was okay with him before this role, (I didn't like him in Remember too much sobbing, Ruler it didn't happen), but he's shining brightly here.

So, the team's conclusion at MG kissing his robot vacuum is that he's not a pervert, but my initial thought was "What a freak." But then again, I kiss my beloved items (such as my precious stuffed lion I like to call Romeo) frequently, so who am I to call him weird? Also, note: even tho that yellow sweater of his is ugly, anyone can look cute fiddling with their fingers awkwardly while wearing a sweater that hides most of the hands.
"Buuuut: He watches TV! Shouldn’t that prepare him for real human contact?" EXACTLY!! I think about that all the time! You watch TV, man, it's not like you're 100% oblivious about human nature. When TV would give us normal folk surreal expectations, it might even be the other way around for him.

Mmm. But think how much we see on TV and in movies that we 'beta-test' in real life. E.g. a certain set of vampire films with behaviour from a male lead that was definitely leaning heavily into stalking/harassment... once you've heard it once from one friend and/or experienced (unwanted) behaviour like that yourself, our 'algorithms' go from 'romantic' to 'major pain in the arse', especially once you start learning about how drama ACTUALLY relates to real life [read: all the first loves from childhood that magically spring into fully developed relationships 20 years later...pssh, yeah right!].

We do the same beta-test on dramabeans - the wrist grab has gone from a romantic 'I've gotta have you' action to a 'Dude, seriously, is *THAT* how you want to start your relationship? I'ma watch to see how you make it up to her because that's not okay...'

Basically, I think Min Kyu would be MUCH more emotionally developed if he'd chatted in the comments about the shows he watches. I saw Min Kyu watch W-Two Worlds! We analysed the heck out of it here! He's clearly a lurker! A cautionary tale about all lurking, no participating!

I'm so excited to see how he'll react to the kiss. He's been really good at believing she's a robot all this time (THE king of denial), so he probably will still think she's a robot? But I am afraid they will drag it out longer just for the sake of the premise: I am not a robot. It is like, I am expecting him to believe for a long time that she actually is... And then discover it in a very disastrous way.
I predict they will drag out Jia debating herself how to tell him and not being able to, because typical, an evil one will intervene before, in order to destroy their relationship,LOL 😂😂😂
Even the santa Maria group will have little charge of conscience, but won't be able to tell, because of fear.
I anticipate a not nice finding out for him 😞

"They’re lying in their graves, side by side” is 100% my sense of humor so I was just dying with laughter while my heart was breaking for MK's show of absolute trust in Jia. His 'dead inside' smile resonated with me on so many levels. I'm keeping this show in my favorites for this scene alone.
I'm glad that Pi exists. I obviously don't want Jia to part with MK but when he inevitably finds out, their reputation is ruined. Again. No matter how impressive Aji3 is in her own right (recognizing gestures from movies??? that's on another cognitive level), she's no Jia, she isn't able to teach MK anything he doesn't already know. Although frankly that's a love triangle I'd actually enjoy. Anyway wasn't BG the actual best in this episode?
And that umbrella scene... man do I love rain kisses in dramas! I don't blame Jia in the slightest, if someone was this appreciative of one of my failed project I'd kiss them as well. It sealed the deal for her and I can't wait for his reaction next week!

I did snort with laughter at the awkwardness and normally I hate cringy stuff. I can imagine his response to Jia's exasperation "You told me to be honest! They are in a grave next to each other!"

I've been waiting for everyone's reaction to quell my reaction and excitement about *his* reaction next week - he's going to flip! Especially if Baek Gyun decides to punish him somehow for it >.<

Min-kyu's brain really works a bit differently from others. There's just so much denial from his side it totally makes sense to me that Jia is still not caught and he still believes Ri-el is the girl he imagined her to be.

While I do agree that Min-kyu tries not to see Jia in a romantic light because she's a robot to him, in some subconscious level, there's definitely something more than friendship there. If I were to romanticize it, I'd say his heart recognizes hers even if his brain doesn't exactly compute. In this episode alone, when they were pretend-dating, when he sees her too close to Baek-gyun, when he catches her from falling - those moments had sexual tension and real attraction from his side too. But like I mentioned earlier, he's in so much denial (and in this topic, rightly so) that he doesn't see it that way.

I honestly like Ri-el a lot despite her unconsciously breaking Min-kyu's heart. Because in some ways, he really needs someone to be just honest with him. He needs a friend who can just tell him things the way they are, even if its painful. I think the difference between Jia and Ri-el is that simply, Jia is already in love with him. So she wants to protect him, his feelings, his heart. She sees the kid inside of him carrying all his insecurities, his fears and his dreams. So even if she wants to be brutally honest that he must come out of self-created fantasies, she can't exactly tell him that in fear of hurting him in the process. I like Ri-el for having that power. And I like the idea that the second lead is just as needed in this story as the first lead is. I think Ri-el can be a real friend to Min-kyu, if she manages to get through him that the Ri-el he knows has long grown up.

Lastly, regarding Jia, I think she's already too far out in love with him that telling him the truth will probably be too risky for her. She's most likely thinking, what if he throws me out? What if his condition gets worse? What if I can never see him again? Min-kyu is indeed a little fragile, but the reaction I'd like is for him to get to know the real Jia. I know he needs her beside him to keep his condition at bay, but I'd like for it to somehow worsen, and for him to still seek her out. Not as a cure to his ailment, but because irrelevant of what she did to him, he still wants her in his life - as her.

It is usually illustrative when beanies start writing essays about a show - because it indicates that we're feeling and thinking about what we've seen and not just "watch and forget". And we seem to have reached a threshold at this episode.

Good writing and production helps - the little scenes that help underpin the development and understanding of all the key characters - effective and allows us to believe in the organic progress of the relationship between the characters.

This is something that is important for me. If I watch an episode and the end catches me by surprise because "wow - an hour has gone by!" because it kept my attention then it is working for me (unlike Black Knight - sigh - I like the show but it is slow motion by comparison)

If I had to criticize the show, it is probably the "Curly and the Brain" bits. Thankfully, it hasn't become too irritating but their scene time is disproportionate to their importance to the main story and their comedic value is limited. Instead, I keep wishing for just a little bit more (not too much) time spent on fleshing out BG and JJA's previous relationship. I think we get an idea of what happened but we're left guessing.

I agree. I still do not find the set of villains that we are presented so far that compelling. I get peeved by black and white characterizations and it appears that the bad guys are there just to steal KM and Aji3 away from Minkyu. I do hope though that Yoochul, in particular, is not just portrayed as a jealous rival. Based from what we have seen so far, he appeared to have really considered Minkyu as a bestfriend, even a brother, growing up and was just pushed away after the tragedy. Yoochul also doesn't seem to be privy to his dad's evil machinations. So I do hope that we get more from his character.

As for Baekgyun, I am miffed that he attributes Minkyu's "miraculous" healing to his creation, Aji3. It was Jia's doing all this time and BG's refusal to acknowledge that is just irritating. BG asked in a previous ep what he could've done for Jia to hate him so much enough to delete moments with him from her memory. I think this is just one example. I am not even sure if he has apologized to Jia for putting her face on Aji3.

Minkyu, while mistakenly believing fauxbot Jia as the real Aji3, is more appreciative of her, as evidenced by the repeated activation of the chingu mode (which, unknown to him, enables Jia to act out as herself while being Aji3) and by just putting up with the many inconveniences that her presence has inserted into his life. He eagerly follows what Jia as Aji3 asks from him. And Minkyu just appreciating the umbrella that Jia invented, which others eagerly dismiss as useless stuff, may just be the validation that Jia is looking for all this time. Aside from her dad, there is finally another person who genuinely appreciates her invention and uses it for the way that she intends it to be used. It already pains me thinking how MK's overwhelming faith and trust on Jia as Aji3, while helping him come out from his shell, will definitely devastate him when he finds out about their charade.

P.S. The running gag of Jia acting cutely as Minkyu's "treasure" to push him to fight for her never fails to crack me up.

Overall, I feel the production of this drama has built up enough trust in me that I am willing to go along for the ride whatever path they choose.

They may be able to hold out on the fauxbot revelation for another 2 weeks or so (maybe around 2/3 through the series) then give another 2 weeks for the OTP to reconcile and the last week for dramatic climax and the happy ending.

But they also have this Yoo Chul/Ri El parts to tie off and the Curly and the Brain plot line - which may mean the revelation comes about through a "kidnap and rescue" episode or failed kidnap that injures Jia. This could happen in the next week or so to give the producers some time to make the climactic scene about "good guys win over bad guys".

I'll trust this team to give us a good ride until the end.

I love our OTP, but for me it's the little moments with the rest of the team that elevates what could - with worse writing - have been a pretty standard show. It's a sign of a good drama for me, that I'm invested in all the side characters and even like the second leads.

She's liked him (and now I think is even in love with him) for a while. So her jealousy over Ri-el, her desire to be seen by Min-kyu as a woman, as well as her emotions got the better of her. my favorite moments from this episode was the pretend date walk when the tension was so thick especially when they were brushing against each other's arms and hand. You can see MK's finger lifting slightly prolonging the contact with Jia's. They kept sneaking a look from the other. The other favorite moment was just before sun hye started with her lecture about the kissing thing, how cute was Min-kyu when he wouldn't allow the lecture to start without having Jia sit beside him. I kept repeating how he was all apout trying to cue her to sit beside him! and when he chastised Sunhye when she asked for water, saying Jia is there as a friend not a housekeeper. I think SH was trying to get them together, she can see how they were starting to feel for the other. In the preview I think we'd see MK battling his attraction to Jia, "Coffe Prince" style with a lot of angst . I think someone has the same sentiments here.

Gosh I'm just so worried when the gig is up, MK will be beyond devastated. I keep praying the show keeps going with the trajectory of excellent episodes because I'm all sold about this pairing. This might be the first kdrama Im totally enjoying after a long hiatus.

Robot thing aside, love how active female lead we have here, I hope after the kiss, Jia will contemplate on her feelings and confess everything because while I love the troupe of man falling in love and professing their love first, I get that we can't expect that from our Min Kyu now, unless some future developments amidst his eccentric personality will happen and the writer will finally give us some real Jia and Min Kyu interactions again.
