The Guest: Episode 6

Sometimes an episode comes along that gives you a frisson of excitement as you realize all the random elements suddenly perfectly mesh together and make you eager to see what comes next. Happily, this is that episode, where we’ve reached the turning point from a good, compelling show, to a potentially excellent, mind-blowing show — demons, beware!

EPISODE 6 RECAP

Paramedics rush the bleeding woman, Kim Yoon-hee, to the hospital, and Hwa-pyung resists being taken down to the police station in order to warn Kil-young that “Sohn” is in Yoon-hee. Kil-young tells him to stay out of police business, but as he’s dragged away to the police station, Hwa-pyung begs her to keep an eye on Yoon-hee.

At the station, the officer is under the impression — based on the testimony of the bystanders — that Hwa-pyung and Yoon attacked Yoon-hee. Hwa-pyung doesn’t even blink as he spins a tale about going to the same church as Yoon-hee. He explains that he’s just a friend concerned about her mental health, so he brought along Yoon, their priest, for counseling.

Yoon looks uncomfortable with Hwa-pyung’s lies, but reluctantly admits he offered some Yoon-hee counseling (which is true). The police officer still doesn’t believe them and orders them to stay put while he does a background check.

Yoon grumpily complains that Hwa-pyung can’t stop lying, and he caused this whole thing in the first place by provoking Yoon-hee. He’s still concerned that something might happen with Yoon-hee while they’re not there to help her, but Hwa-pyung is confident that Kil-young is keeping a careful watch.

He’s right, since Kil-young and Detective Go are at the hospital with Yoon-hee. Kil-young demands to know why she lied about not contacting her boyfriend, Jong-ryul, for the past month, since the phone records show he was in contact with her the day he disappeared.

Yoon-hee insists she doesn’t remember, but Kil-young persists, insisting that Kil-young killed him and dumped the body somewhere. As the detectives start to leave, Yoon-hee sits up and screams that she didn’t kill him.

Detective Go assumes that there’s a mental health issue, but Kil-young disagrees. She doesn’t elaborate, but simply tells Detective Go that she wants to stay and keep an eye on Yoon-hee. However, the nurse relays a message from Yoon-hee that Jong-ryul is waiting for her near her apartment.

The detectives head out to follow this lead, but Kil-young can’t stop thinking about Hwa-pyung’s warning that Yoon-hee might do something dangerous, so she orders Detective Go to investigate on his own while she returns to the hospital. Detective Go grumbles that he’s left on his own as he searches through the apartment parking lot.

He finds one car covered in a sheet. When he lifts off the covering, a body is in the backseat. It’s Jong-ryul.

Kil-young races back to the hospital, but Yoon-hee has already disappeared.

Still waiting at the police station, Hwa-pyung has a vision from Yoon-hee’s perspective. She visits Jong-ryul’s workplace at night, where the only person there is the supervisor she had tried to kill previously. He has no idea who she is, but agrees to loan her his cellphone.

When he gives it to her, she stabs him with a box cutter, telling him he’s the first of the office workers she’ll kill. Then she reapplies her red lipstick and starts whistling a tune.

At the police station, Hwa-pyung also whistles the same tune. Yoon tries to get his attention, but Hwa-pyung’s too lost in his vision. Hwa-pyung grabs Yoon by the throat, and the other officers try to intervene, but his demon strength via psychic vision is too powerful.

Kil-young arrives and manages to get Hwa-pyung to snap out of it. Hwa-pyung tells her what he saw in his vision, warning her that Yoon-hee plans to kill all the office workers when they arrive to work in the morning.

Kil-young tells the other two to go home and let her deal with it, but Hwa-pyung insists that they need to catch Park Il-do together. Kil-young stubbornly insists that this has nothing to do with Park Il-do — she just wants to catch the person who killed Jong-ryul.

Hwa-pyung reminds her that Kil-young is a part of this, whether she likes it or not, since Park Il-do killed her mother. Through gritted teeth, Kil-young warns Hwa-pyung to never mention her mother again, and then she turns and walks away. Yoon thinks it’s all for the best, since Kil-young might be put in danger if they drag her into their hunt for Park Il-do.

Yoon and Hwa-pyung illegally break into Yoon-hee’s apartment, a fact that makes Yoon visibly uncomfortable. But Hwa-pyung says they have to find out more about Yoon-hee before she kills more people, and this is the fastest way. They find a lot of happy photos of Yoon-hee with Jong-ryul, which makes them wonder what darkness was inside her that she would become possessed and kill her boyfriend.

They freeze when they hear someone at the door. It’s one of Yoon-hee’s friends, who’s just as shocked to see them. Hwa-pyung peppers her with questions about Yoon-hee’s mental health, but it’s only when Yoon — in his reassuring priest’s frock — gently reveals that he had spoken to Yoon-hee earlier, that the friend admits Yoon-hee had been having a hard time because Jong-ryul was being bullied at work.

The friend explains that Jong-ryul quit his job right when he and Yoon-hee were planning to get married. Yoon and Hwa-pyung realize that Yoon-hee is bent on revenge for her boyfriend, who actually committed suicide.

The detectives head to the Jong-ryul’s old office and split up to investigate. Kil-young warns Detective Go to be careful since Yoon-hee is dangerous (although she doesn’t elaborate why).

Detective Go cautiously looks through the empty offices, finding no one. The possessed Yoon-hee appears behind him and grabs him by the neck.

Yoon and Hwa-pyung drive to the office building, and when Hwa-pyung starts to whistle, Yoon realizes he’s lost in a trance. Hwa-pyung’s vision shows Detective Go on the ground, his neck bloody. Oh no!

Yoon finally shakes Hwa-pyung out of his trance and they speed to the office with extra urgency. Yoon calls Kil-young, warning her that Detective Go was attacked. Hwa-pyung tells her not to go into the building.

But Kil-young remembers what happened to her mother twenty years ago when the young Hwa-pyung gave her the same warning. Without hesitation, she hurries upstairs to Jong-ryul’s office. She finds the supervisor on the ground, gasping for breath. He’s still alive!

Kil-young calls for backup, but before the call connects, Yoon-hee grabs her and the two women fight. Yoon-hee may have the strength of a demon, but we all know Kil-young can hold her own in a supernatural fight.

Even so, Yoon-hee manages to overpower Kil-young and knock her out. Whistling her eerie tune, Yoon-hee drags the unconscious Kil-young down the hallway.

In an empty room, Yoon-hee ties up Kil-young and the supervisor. Yoon-hee tells them that she’ll kill them in the morning once everyone comes to work. It’s her plan to kill everyone at the company.

Yoon-hee reveals that Jong-ryul was bullied and tormented by his coworkers. Jong-ryul finally couldn’t take all the cruel messages that his coworkers sent him — the same brutal messages that Yoon-hee received from her demon texter. Yoon-hee arrived home one night after Jong-ryul called her, only to find him in the bathtub, his wrists slit.

She tried to commit suicide, too, by jumping off a rooftop, and that’s when the demons came, using the text messages to enter the despairing Yoon-hee. They told her to kill everyone who caused her boyfriend’s death.

Kil-young asks if Park Il-do is making her do this, and the possessed Yoon-hee angrily says that this will be the last time Kil-young says that name. She decides to change her plan and kill everyone immediately instead of waiting for the morning.

She chooses the supervisor first, and as she raises the box cutter to the man’s neck, Kil-young frantically rolls and wriggles across the floor, shoving Yoon-hee away from him. Furious, Yoon-hee kicks and stomps on Kil-young, demonically laughing as she reminds Kil-young that the people who intervene always end up killed in the end, anyway (y’know, like her mother).

But as Yoon-hee raises her knife to slice Kil-young’s throat, she hears Yoon and Hwa-pyung’s voices calling out for Kil-young. Yoon-hee’s eyes grow wide as she realizes that “bastard and the priest” are here.

Dropping the knife, Yoon-hee runs down the hallway and out of the building. Hwa-pyung and Yoon chase after her, Yoon being the slightly faster one as Hwa-pyung breaks off to head in another direction. She’s got that supernatural speed and stamina on her side, though, and Yoon finally has to stop to catch his breath.

Hwa-pyung’s cuts Yoon-hee off with his taxi by essentially running her over. It’s a blow that would seriously harm another human, but the possessed Yoon-hee gets right back up and grabs Hwa-pyung, throwing him against the car’s hood and strangling him.

Yoon catches up with them and presses a crucifix against her neck, which causes Yoon-hee to writhe in pain and pass out. Both men are exhausted, but Yoon says he’ll take care of Yoon-hee so Hwa-pyung can check on Kil-young. Hwa-pyung returns to the office building and frees Kil-young and the terrified supervisor from their bondages. They also find Detective Go, who’s thankfully still alive.

Yoon carries Yoon-hee to an abandoned warehouse which he quickly sets up as his makeshift exorcism room. He ties her to a table and sets out his holy items for the ritual.

Yoon-hee wakes up and tries to get into Yoon’s head, asking if he blames Hwa-pyung for what happened to his brother. She hisses that he’s going to die just like Priest Choi and his parents. She cackles with laughter, but Yoon continues focusing on preparing his holy items.

He’s about to gag her, though, when she suddenly bursts out that everyone near him is going to die — “He’s just like us.” Yoon pauses, since that’s exactly what Young-soo told him during his exorcism.

Yoon demands to know what she means, but suddenly Yoon-hee starts frantically crying — no demon voice this time as she tells him that it hurts. Blood starts to pour from her wrists and Yoon attempts to untie her bonds, but she leaps up and grabs him around the neck to strangle him with her supernatural strength.

Hwa-pyung saves him by shoving him away from Yoon-hee — her strangling him was only in his mind. She’s still tied to the table, but she was close to convincing Yoon to free her. Hwa-pyung chides him for being so confident that he could handle everything on his own, even though the demons are getting in his head.

Yoon insists he’s fine, but Hwa-pyung and Kil-young jump in to help hold Yoon-hee down so Yoon can perform the exorcism. In her demon voice, Yoon-hee laughs that they all hate each other, since they blame each other for what happened to their families. She scoffs that they’re actually going to work together.

Yoon curtly tells Kil-young not to look Yoon-hee in the eyes and quickly begins the exorcism. Hwa-pyung demands to know more about Park Il-do — where he went after Priest Choi died, and the connection to Sharing Hand. But the possessed Yoon-hee angrily screams that she’ll kill his grandfather.

Cut to Grandpa coughing in his home. Oh no!

Yoon-hee continues to smirk as she tells the trio that they’ll all kill each other, but Yoon orders the other two not to listen to the possessed woman. Yoon-hee writhes in pain as Yoon prays and presses a crucifix against her skin, which burns.

Kil-young can’t resist feeling sorry for the way Yoon-hee flails and screams in pain. Finding the weak spot in the trio, Yoon-hee focuses her attention on the other woman, pleading with her to save her. Hwa-pyung yells at Kil-young not to give in as Yoon continues to pray, but Kil-young looks doubtful.

Yoon-hee’s gentle voice grows violent as she screams for Kil-young to release her or else she’ll kill her like she did her mother. Suddenly Yoon-hee’s voice changes again — now she sounds like Kil-young’s mother, telling her that she should have never been born and should have died with her mother died.

Hwa-pyung yells at Kil-young not to fall for the demon’s tricks, and Yoon-hee flails until she passes out. Blood seeps from under her body. Yoon gently asks if Yoon-hee can hear him. The woman turns to face him, as the demon inside that she’s not there — Yoon-hee wanted to die when her boyfriend died, but the demons saved her, so Yoon-hee is theirs.

As the possessed Yoon-hee flails, Yoon yells at her to not give up on herself, to choose to live. “Think of your baby!”

Kil-young’s shocked to discover that Yoon-hee is pregnant, and Hwa-pyung reveals that they found out about that fact from Yoon-hee’s friend. They have to save Yoon-hee so they can also save her unborn baby.

Hwa-pyung shows her a photo of a happy Yoon-hee with Jong-ryul, telling her that she can’t die, to be strong for her child. They resume the exorcism, and Yoon-hee starts to spit up water as she screams Park Il-do’s name. The lights flicker.

Suddenly she sits up and vomits up a current of water. The exorcism is over. They saved Yoon-hee — and her baby.

In the morning, the trio sit outside after everyone else is taken to the hospital. Yoon-hee will likely go to jail for attempted murder, but Hwa-pyung insists that Yoon-hee is innocent. Her actions were caused by Park Il-do.

Kil-young demands to know more about Park Il-do, wondering if he was really responsible for her mother’s death. She decides that they need to catch him, since he turns innocent people into killers. Hwa-pyung warns her that if she goes down this path, there’s no turning back, but Kil-young is determined.

Yoon says it’s too dangerous for her. Park Il-do is a spirit — only an exorcist should deal with him. Kil-young stubbornly tells Yoon that she’ll help him — after all, she’s been a part of this, anyway, whether she likes it or not.

Hwa-pyung can’t believe they have the energy to bicker like this after what they’ve just been through, but Yoon resolutely insists that he’ll handle it on his own and walks away.

Hwa-pyung is all for teaming up and reassures Kil-young he’ll persuade Yoon. He offers to give her a ride home, telling her she should go to the hospital first so she won’t worry her family by showing up with a bunch of injuries. Hwa-pyung sighs that she doesn’t have a family.

Kil-young tells him that she used to wonder why her mother lived such a dangerous life as a detective, barging into dangerous places without thought of what it would mean for her daughter. Kil-young now realizes she does the exact same thing — if she had a family, they probably wouldn’t like her either.

Hwa-pyung quietly apologizes for being the boy in the road twenty years ago, but Kil-young points out if he hadn’t been there, Yoon would have died. What she really regrets is that he stopped her from going into the house, since perhaps she could have done more than helplessly watch her mother die.

Remembering the night his mother his own mother died when he was possessed, Hwa-pyung muses that maybe he should have died back then, too. When he gets home, Hwa-pyung checks on Grandpa, making sure he’s okay. He is. Whew. Then Hwa-pyung studies the Sharing Hand booklet.

Meanwhile, Yoon gets word from his parish that he’s now forbidden from being an exorcist since he hasn’t been following the proper exorcism procedures. Alone in the church, Yoon hears Yoon-hee’s voice, reminding him that everyone near Park Il-do will die.

Yoon tries to center himself on his faith by praying, but just then his phone buzzes. It’s Hwa-pyung, asking for a favor.

Yoon stops by Priest Yang’s — who puts a little whiskey in his coffee. Yoon’s concerned about Priest Yang’s drinking, but the older priest reassures him that it’s only for medicinal purposes. Yoon’s not there to discuss Priest Yang’s hidden alcoholism, but Sharing Hand and the connection it has with the possessed people.

Priest Yang insists that it’s impossible for Sharing Hand — a volunteer church charity — is related to Park Il-do. Yoon hesitates, then asks Priest Yang if he used to hear things when he used to be an exorcist.

The older priest admits that it’s not usual to hear things or have hallucinations as an exorcist, since the soul gets damaged the more it comes in contact with demons, like it’s being slowly eaten away.

He tells Yoon that he should stop chasing a demon that’s so closely connected to him, but Yoon says he has no choice. He asks for Priest Yang’s help.

Hwa-pyung tricks Yook Kwang into going with him to the place where Priest Choi died — something Yook Kwang wouldn’t have done willingly, since he knows how dangerous Park Il-do is.

Reluctant, the shaman follows Hwa-pyung into the forest. He cautiously investigates the site where Priest Choi’s body was found, performing a ritual for the deceased. Yook Kwang freezes when he realizes that the spiritual realm is blocked from him — but he has the same vision he did that night when he tried to exorcise Young-soo, when he saw himself dead, covered in blood, at his home.

Suddenly Yook Kwang starts digging at the ground, and finds another body.

Back to the police station, where Hwa-pyung and Yook Kwang are held on suspicion. Yook Kwang insists that they’re perfectly innocent, a mere shaman and a psychic, and that the spirits led them to the body. Yep, that’s not suspicious.

The body is revealed to be that of a high school student, Song Hyun-joo, who went missing twenty years ago. Ohhh, it’s the same missing girl that Kil-young’s mother was investigating, and the reason she was so late to pick up Kil-young that night.

Kil-young pulls out an old box of memorabilia from her closet. Inside is her mother’s old case notes. Kil-young flips through them, stopping on a name: Park Hong-joo.

Meanwhile, Yoon looks through Priest Yang’s collection of Sharing Hand information, and stops when he sees photos of Hong-joo with Young-soo and the junk yard brothers.

Hong-joo is serving food to homeless people through Sharing Hand’s shelter, giving an interview to the press about how much she cares about the homeless.

When a reporter asks for a photo, requesting Hong-joo hold hands with the homeless people, the councilwoman is a little reluctant until one of her aids poses her. He then whispers something in her ear, and her photo-worthy smile vanishes.

She’s furious to learn that Hyun-joo’s body has been found, and throws a fit in the shelter’s kitchen, knocking down pots and pans until her hands start to bleed.

COMMENTS

I knew Hong-joo was shady! The real question, though, is she possessed? Or just evil? (She is a politician, y’know). Then again, she might just have some anger management issues. Buuuuut I’m gonna say there’s a little Park Il-do in her, somewhere, and that she was involved with Hyun-joo’s death from twenty years ago (based on their names, I’m assuming they were sisters), and that she encountered Priest Choi in the forest the night he killed himself. Plus she’s super involved in Sharing Hand (even if she doesn’t actually want to touch the hands of the people she helps), which means she’s had contact with all the possessed people we’ve encountered so far.

But does that mean she’s also connected to the many other deaths from Hwa-pyung’s collection of news clippings? Maybe Hong-joo is actually a red herring. Her being Park Il-do almost feels too obvious at this point. I’d still believe she’s got some sort of demon in her, though, even if it isn’t the Big Bad. Besides, I’m still wary about Priest Yang. There’s something going on there — he knows more than he’s letting on, I’m sure of it. I don’t think he’s actually Park Il-do, though, because it sounds like Priest Yang was actually a part of Yoon’s early life and helping him become a priest. If he were really Park Il-do, then the demon wouldn’t need to go on this blood-thirsty hunt to find Yoon, since he’d already know where he was. (Which then makes me question Hong-joo’s involvement — but maybe Sharing Hand was started after Yoon left Priest Yang?) So we’ve still got some time before we finally track down Park Il-do — but not before busting a few other demon heads along the way.

Hwa-pyung dragging Yoon into his questionable ways of finding out information is hilarious to me. Say what one will about Yoon’s reasons for becoming a priest, he’s still a man of the cloth, with a moral center that believes in honesty and righteousness. Whereas Hwa-pyung has no shame in lying if it means getting the information he needs. They’re the perfect “Odd Couple” pair of demon hunters. Or trio, now, since they’ve officially started to work together with Kil-young (Yoon may insist on working solo as much as he wants — we all know that the trio are bonded together forever now).

I love that Kil-young is like, “I don’t understand what’s going on, but I do know that we need to work together to destroy this Park Il-do bastard.” Watching the three of them support each other as they defeated the demons inside Yoon-hee was by far my favorite part of the episode, because it made me realize that this is exactly the moment I’ve been waiting for these past six episodes. I want my demon-hunting, crime-solving, life-saving trio to willingly work together side-by-side, trusting each other and supporting each other despite moments of weakness, and we’re finally getting that! Sure, they needed to first work through what happened to them in the past (let’s be real, they’re still working through it), but they also know that wallowing in what happened twenty years ago won’t save people who are dying right now.

Finding Park Il-do in order to seek vengeance for the way their families died is important, but so is saving the innocent people Park Il-do will kill along the way. My Scooby gang trio is officially complete, and I couldn’t be happier — provided we can also drag our much-needed comical sidekicks Yook Kwang and Detective Go along for the hellacious ride.

That exorcism scene was so well directed. The music used for it actually made me emotional. I’m so glad Gil young is finally onboard now all it takes is to convince Yoon.

Since it's such a dark show, I'm glad for the few humorous scenes, thanks to HP, his shaman hyung and the inspector sunbae. I just hope nothing happens to them.

Also I'm still suspicious of Priest yang. But then it doesn't make sense that Park Il Do is searching for yoon, because he knows who he is. Unless he's a sadist (which he surely is) and likes to play with people. Also, priest choi is already dead. If he was possessed because of his resentment against his family, then why is the spirit still obsessed with yoon? The spirits only take advantage of their victims and are usually not bothered what happens after they leave the body. It's not like the spirits take care of their victims unfinished business. Or does it not work that way? Is there something more to yoon that we don't know? Also Priest Yang told yoon that his brother loved him. So even though he was possessed, he might not have killed him. But we'll never know about that.

It's not just hate the spirits take advantage, I think. The case in the first two eps - the spirit in the man who was possessed killed not only the CEO of the company but also the possessed man's wife if I recall right. And was going after his daughter. I'd say the entry point is feelings of hatred, jealousy, negativity, etc; but once in, the spirits don't necessarily discriminate.

So Priest Choi may have loved his family and Yoon, but the spirit exploited whatever resentment he had, to take hold - and then attacked indiscriminately. Like Gil Young's mum.

Maybe PID should possess everyone 😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Is that what are you saying/implying ???!!

2

Good gosh no. Who on earth would the people he's possessed, kill then?

2

@greenfields thank god you understood my question. Because I had no clue how to phrase it.
So you think he's going after Yoon to finish the family completely? If that's the logic, then GY and HP and his gramps will also be in danger (not that they weren't before). But seeing that he left these people untouched all these years, I don't know what to think.

Hehe your question came across quite clearly. (My answer is a bit disjointed on the other hand.)

As to why he's going after Yoon - I can't say. It may just be something the spirit said, why on earth should we trust it....is what I'd think but Yoon is one of the three leads in the drama so it's probably true. XD I *think* there is more to Yoon than we've been told so far - he's a powerful exorcist right? He managed to do what his mentor priest failed to do. Just like there's more to Hwa Pyung - and all of this is somehow connected to that fateful night when Hwa Pyung ran away, and Gil Young's mum and Yoon's family died.

As for untouched, Yoon and Gil Young have not been chasing after Park Il Do like Hwa Pyung. I dunno if this matters. HAHAHA

Yoon did become a priest to track down his brother and the spirit. Also, HP or his granddad should have been harmed or dead by now if he's messing with Park for so long.

2

Yep, and like shaman hyung said, devil is a liar. Before that, they said priest choi will come to get his brother, but apparently he is dead already.

It might his spirit, or just red herring. Who knows...

5

But isn't the spirits start talking about Yoon after HP asked them about Priest Choi? Maybe that way they were toying with him and throwing him red herrings. I think what Priest Yang mean was that Priest Choi loved his family even though he was unhappy with being priest, so demon got attached to this unhappines and wreak havoc as demons do.

I'm guessing Priest Choi's ghost is looking for his brother to warn him against Park Il-do or to protect him. Maybe even seeking his brother's forgiveness.

If what you said is true, why would the bad spirits convey that message?

This is a great theory! And a distinct possibility!
The bad spirits don't have to know everything. They may not know WHY Priest Choi's spirit is looking for his brother. XD

ALSO do you think that Park Il Do maybe "collects" the spirits of those he possesed? All these spirits talk in the plural "we" (according to my subs).

Maybe he collects their spirits. But also, I think he's stronger than other demons. So the 'we" may also mean his underlings who possess people. Kind of recruiting maybe?
Also Park il do seems like someone who would only possess strong or influential people. Reminds me of voldemort's horcruxes.

In Christian lore ghost doesn't exist, but i have no idea how Korean mythology define ghosts (something tells me I'm gonna spend this day googling Korean ghost stories, hehe), so far we just have one ghost sighting in first episode and nothing was mention of ghosts ever since.

Which is why I was able to finish ep 1 and continue watching the show. There is only one ghost. Ghosts and I are not really in good terms, would have dropped the drama if ghosts appeared in every ep lol

The possession case was not really scary and I did not find it much difficult to look at Yoon hee when she was possessed. She was kind of pretty and sad even at that state.
What creeped me out was hong joo, I didn't know what to expect or how will she react.
I like the interaction between kil young and Yoon. He has a kind of guilt towards her which is why he refuses to let her on board. Maybe he will die protecting her or something (I really hope not).
Another thing I liked very much was that gil young's inspiration to join the Finding PID team was not the death of her mother alone but the fact that PID manipulates innocent people to become killers.

Honestly I think Yoon isn't on board with team spirit yet, because he still think his better of on his own and better dealing with demons and the two others doesn't bring much to the table, he changed his mind about HP after he saw him having vision but with Kil Young, he sees her as useless for his cause, which I find a little bit condescending because all of them has good reason to get PID. It's probably because of his upbringing, being ostracised does that kind of thing to people, but I hope he shake it of soon.

I really don't think his hesitation about Kil young has anything to do with that. It is about the guilt he has about her mother's death. She is very essential to the team because of her position as a police officer and also because of her fighting skills. She has saved them before and on the fight against PID, there are a lot of places which are inaccessible to a psychic and ex-exorcist where her identity could be helpful. Yoon is a sensible guy, it is not possible that he is blind to such things. This fight is as personal for her as it is for the guys. For me, it is clear that he is hesitant to put her in harm's way.

She is grown woman perfectly capable to make her own informed decision on that matter, she doesn't need his permission, so even his reason is concern for her it is condescending to act like she isn't capable to make decision on her own. I liked HP approach better, he explained all possible dangers and let her make decision on her own, after she saw weird stuff, been through weird stuff, dealt with weird stuff, so she isn't going blindly in.

I have a feeling that part of Yoon's reason for not wanting to work with Kil-young is her skeptical attitude. He already has his hands full trying to concentrate while conducting an exorcism. She has stated more than once that she doesn't like priests or churches. That antagonism is one more energy drain for him to have to overcome while wrestling with demons.

Kil-young has no spiritual training as far as I've seen, and doesn't strike me as the kind to engage in it -- or follow Yoon's or Hwa-pyung's metaphysical directions. She doesn't know what she's up against when it comes to discorporate entities. This makes her a liability and distraction, at least until she becomes more humble and open-minded about the unseen world. I don't think Yoon is being condescending. I see him as being sincerely motivated by safety concerns, physical as well as spiritual. Plus he has protocols he has to follow, and they include spiritual preparation and reinforcement prior to engaging with malign spirits. Another consideration is backup and support when facing off against evil spirits. "A house divided cannot stand" in the face of demonic possession

I don't necessary agree with that, during exorcism she followed HP instruction to not engage with the demon and take a back sit, helping without questioning whatever happened, and during that scene when she offered her help to catch PID she was very subdued. It's Yoon who doesn't follow protocol and almost let demon loose, and as we saw I think demon struck a nerve with him claiming that HP is like them, it follow him to the point of auditory hallucinations, so for HP safety I would like KY to stick with them right now.

I don't agree with both @shach's and your argument. I don't think that he entertains any thought like she could be a liability in this mission. Instead, he really knows that how much a competent police officer can help them out.

For me, it is the guilt that prevents him. He will find it difficult if anything happens to her during this PID hunt.

I never thought that I will find a exorcism scene beautiful... But the OST at this moment and the way they were around the victim was really well executed.

I'm curious about the "He's like us". It means that HP is a demon ? Or has a part of demon ? Or it's just the fact that it can see what is happening.

When the demon is possessing a person, I think the "we" means the demon + PID.

@kurama and @shach
I believe the 'We' and 'us' refers to the multiple spirits possessing the person at the same time. This is actually the case in some possessions, ie, there's a legion or group of spirits that enter the same host. In this drama, we can hear this in the multiple voices that speak at times and in how the person speaks to himself and answers himself.

This was amazing episode, I think we starting new chapter in the story and PID will be exposed soon. Hopefully we will learn more about his backstory, from what I remeber he came from the sea and shamans weren't able to defeat him, they manage to cast him in his host body into the sea again, and it seems like HP has some idea how to fight PID, there was this scene when he cast a solemn look at some object on the backseat of the car. But I hope we got to see few instance of our trio working together on smaller cases so they can bond further, they are such a joy to watch.

@shach
Yes, I'd like some more backstory to PID. It's interesting that he has a name while the rest of the demons are nameless.

The object that HP was looking at in the backseat of the car was a knife or dagger in a scabbard or sheath of some kind. I'm not sure if it was one of the shaman knives (maybe used by the head shaman in ritual) which he thought he might have to use as a last resort, if no exorcism would work.

I think the name Park Il Dong is the name of this host who was cast at the sea, HP call him "sohn" too, which is "guest" or "hand" I'm bit confused by subtitles.

I was a little bit alarmed by this scene when HP looked at this object, dagger as You said, because it looked to me like using it demand some serious sacrfice and HP is willing to die if that means defiting PID. He really don't belive that person possessed isn't reponsible for the harm demon caused when it's concern his past :/

Required fields are marked *

@shach
Yes, the word for hand (손) and guest (손님) is the same character in Korean.

Hmmm, now that you mention it, it is alarming that HP may sacrifice himself. He's all out to take down PID regardless of the consequences to himself. The only 'weakness' he has is his grandfather.

I like how he consistently insists to KY that the person is not really the criminal. He believes that he was possessed before and he does not know how his mum and granny came to die, but he knows that his village blames him. So maybe he's desperate to convince everyone that a possessed person is not responsible for the harm he does. I think he's mostly right as well. Maybe the person is only responsible for allowing in or worse, some people invite in the evil. But after that, if they have no more control over their bodies, then they may not be accountable.

Jumping into change "may not" to "definitely not".

Even the law will tell you that the intention to commit a crime does not equal the actual act of committing one. You may carry immense hatred against someone, plot their death in your mind over and over again, EVEN say (legally) buy a gun with the intention of killing them; but so long as you don't actually attempt murder, there's been no crime. A criminal offense requires both intention (mens rea) and action (actus reus).

Thus all the people who were possessed are more rightly classified as "victims" - as Gil Young said. Their weakness has been exploited to allow someone else/something else to take control of their very body - to the point that a wheelchair bound person is running. They did not intend to swing the hammer that caused the death (no intention), nor can it be said that it is them swinging that hammer, but the thing possessing them (no action).

4

Thanks @greenfields!!
From the law perspective that makes everything clear and is what I understood it to be too. So I'm glad that HP is hammering it home to KY. 😃

It's like (but not the same as) the temptation is there, but the temptation is never a sin.

From Priest Yoon's perspective, in addition, but more difficult, we hate the sin, but not the person, and seek to redeem and save the sinner.

2

'course in the show, the law doesn't recognise the possessed bit. Haha

Great point re Priest.Yoon. whoa. Complicated.

Thanks @odilettante. I join you in rejoicing at the coming together (albeit reluctantly) of "demon-hunting, crime-solving, life-saving" team.

My thoughts:
- Finally HP gets a chance to save KY. That's a nice balancing out of work and chance to build more trust.

- Good grief, the demons have caught up with technology and now incite murder via texts? Or rather, if that could work, what took them so long?

Or maybe it's because the office workers had started bullying Jong Ryul via texts that these became weapons for demons as well? Hmmm that's a thought. Be careful what we communicate and how we make use of all means of communication.

- Demons (who are working in a gang) obviously have a demonic hotline or telepathy because they seem to 'remember' the sad pasts of people whose family they've encountered before, and use this knowledge to torment them. They can also recognise the offspring of past victims regardless of how the children have changed.

- Oh dear, if Yoon is no longer officially an exorcist, he's really not supposed to continue doing the major exorcisms that he's done. Looks like he'll have to be a rule breaker too! But I wonder about the efficacy of the exorcisms when it is not officially allowed.

- When Park Hong Joo has gone raging mad, she stands in that lopsided way with her head on one side ... the way that PID in Choi used to stand. Red herring or clear clue?

Oh... another question @odilettante,

... she was involved with Hyun-joo’s death from twenty years ago (based on their names, I’m assuming they were sisters), and that she encountered Priest Choi in the forest the night he killed himself.

However their family names are Park and Song (unless the written Korean says it's the same), so in the English subs, it does not sound like they are from the same family. I thought that their own names (Song) Hyung Joo and (Park) Hong Joo have similarities but is not necessarily a family name similarity.

I have a question, did i hallucinate kil-young saying she had a kid? She said she has no family waiting for her in this episode, she's always at work and sometimes even sleeps there and just generally doesn't really seem to have any other responsibilities other than her work. It's kind of weird

@aya
KY did say that she had a 6 year old child, when having a meal with HP, and he responded by saying that he was twice divorced. I wasn't sure whether to believe them or not. I felt that they were being cynical. So I was commenting that I'd really like to see that kid and the ex-wives, just to know for sure.

I'm not convinced that either of them ever had or still have family in the sense of being married and having kids.

Certainly the dangerous and uncertain life they've chosen makes it less likely. KY says that if she had a family they'd be unhappy with her as she's always at work. So it sounds like she does not have a family.

In HP's case, it's also unlikely because he's the responsible type. He has been going around taking responsibility for Choi when he searched for him. It's not likely that he would really have been married, knowing that he'd be fighting demons and that having a family meant the demons could get to him through them.

I'm waiting to see if we get more revelation on their personal lives! 😜

I don't, but then I kind of do. They are both very motivated and single-mindedly focused on their agenda, so I don't think romance has been a priority for either, and if they have had relationships in the past they would have been disasters because who can compete with demons? If the show does develop a love line, I hope it does not muddy the plot and, worse, warp Kil-young's character into a typical damsel in distress. She is the burning glow of anger in our trio, and I don't want that to be extinguished yet.

7

I am dead against it. I am little worried about shaman hyung and det. Go repeatedly mentioning it. Maybe in the ending ep they can hint something like that and as both are lonely souls, together they may be able to heal each other.
Well, I don't know what will happen to Yoon though, he may die saving kil-young, even otherwise they have repeatedly mentioned the toll it takes on one's soul.
I would like to see them as a trio. I don't want a group inside that group.

This episode was a emotionally draining one because it really hits you with the workplace bullying.

Also, Kil-young's one track mind, and everything else is radio noise is finally catching up with her and I am glad that the show is acknowledging that. I too am with Yoon and to not wanting to work with her, but I don't think it is for the reason of her safety (we see the woman does fine), but because she a loose cannon with a badge and he has enough problems as it is with Hwa-pyung.

It's amusing watching hwa pyung slowly corrupting Yoon. The scene of them at the police station was utterly hilarious - Yoon seemed so out of it. I loved the little details of the scene - like Yoon silently mouthing the lord's prayer, too dazed to speak up. The case this week was so sad :( poor Yoon hee the fact that the work place bullys will probably gett away with it makes me angry. The exorcism scenes are so uncomfortable. There's something sexual about them and incredibly violating. Ugh I don't blame Gil young for her discomfort. It's hard to watch. I can't believe hong joo gets away with her temper tantrums. It's way too obvious for her to be 'it' though surely?

I love the exorcism scene with Trio. It was beautiful. I am curious why did Congresswoman did not want to hold hand at the end. If it is PID, you would think she would want to hold hands. As I mention, before, I think Priest Yang is PID. I am not quite sure if Priest Choi is alive. Remember, we have not seen the body yet. Just skeletons bone. How did he commit suicide. Not only because the three of them were together, but I liked that the exorcism scene included once again the Priest laying his stole over the possessed person, blessing him and praying for him. Despite the horror of the demon's violent reactions, it was somehow a calming action, bringing with it a sense of protection and healing. Then the expelling of all that sea water, such a good sign of being rid of something so alien and damaging in the body.

I think that Detective Go is going to become involve in this because we're always getting a glimpse of how he loves his family and all. And it seems to be hinting at a possible future event that involves them. I just hope I'm wrong about this! But I really feel like he will become possessed at one point! At the moment I do not get the foreshadowing or vibe that Det Go is going to be a demon victim. What do you mean that there's a "hinting at a possible future event..."? What is the hint?

Det Go does not display any signs of the kind of anger, resentment or hatred that might make him a likely host for PID or its minions. If something happened to his family first, then if he became vengeful or something, that might be a different story. 😉

He seems to feel that he's underappreciated at his job and by Kil Young especially, who keeps ditching him and going off to do her own thing and never informs him about anything. He could also have felt resentment that she sent him into a dangerous situation alone without giving him a full explanation/trusting him.

Yes, he isn't really exhibiting signs of possession. What I meant was the show is putting emphasis on his family relations which I think wasn't necessary if we're going to have him as a side character for our leads. Also, the future event I was talking about is just my hunch so maybe it's just my imagination going wild. Hahaha. And for the hatred or resentment that PID can use against him, I still don't have any idea. 😂 I just had to let this gut feeling out because it's been bugging me since a few episodes back. I'm being dead serious. The corrosion of the soul caused by repeated exposure to evil spirits may well have led to Priest Yang's hitting the bottle as a coping mechanism. It has been said that alcoholism is a physical manifestation of a spiritual illness.

3
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Ah when you put it that way, then yes. But the order of evernts: would it be demons wearing him down, so alcoholism was to cope,... then... spirits come along and enter as well?

3

Unfortunately alcoholism is such a common illness among priests that I wouldn't take as a sign of possible possession, further more priest Yang seems like weak and disillusioned whereas demons are arrogant and prideful, so strong spirit like PID wouldn't be able to lay low for 20 yrs that no one would notice changes in priests Yang personality, Yoon was constantly in contact with him after all.

3

@growingbeautifully, @shach,

IIRC, both Yoon's exorcist mentor who was run over and Priest Yang spoke of exposure to demons eating away at the soul. It sounds like a particularly painful proposition, especially for those in a vocation in which alcoholism is common. But one doesn't have to be an exorcist to be in thrall to alcohol. Ethanol abuse and addiction is also a scourge among the general population. To me, it is a red flag that signals spiritual vulnerability as well as an inborn metabolic quirk. Excessive drinking may open the door to possession, but it could also be a response (self-medication) to any number of situational stressors and mental and physical conditions as well.

Evil spirits who are as subtle as a serpent would keep a low profile so they can have access to an unlimited supply of unsuspecting human hosts to give them a foothold on the material plane. With humans, it's the quiet ones you have to watch out for. I have a feeling that the same holds true for evil spirits. Empty barrels make the most noise. PID's subordinate spirits are the ones who seem to make the biggest ruckus.

In the case of propaganda, the most effective lies are half-truths sprinkled in among true statements and skillfully-concealed omissions. That is why I would not be surprised if Priest Yang is unconsciously harboring Park Il-do or some other malign spirit. PID could have been hiding in plain sight for a long time. Humans do it all the time, so why can't an allegedly powerful spirit? If it is as powerful as has been stated, is PID limited to possessing only one host at a time? The jury is still out on that question.

You wrote it really beautiful @pakalanapikake but I think people can't really hide their true nature, we just don't look at signs until something bother us, I saw it myself and as a true crime aficionado read about it many time, post factum people can recollect many warning signs that they decided to wilfully ignore. With this series of course we know only us much as writers decided to show us so obviously we are in the dark until final reveal and then we can speculate if it was foreshadowed before, but I love our discussion here, and can't for this week recaps, because those episode were all kind of amazing.
