[Drama chat] Voices that can melt the polar ice caps

There’s been much talk about certain K-drama actors and their amazing speaking voices. From So Ji-sub to Kim Min-jae, Woo Do-hwan, and Yeo Jin-gu — yeah, that’s only four and there are a lot more examples out there. I don’t think it’s essential for an actor to have an amazing speaking voice — in fact, most often I won’t pay attention to a speaking voice. Unless it’s one of those voices that hits your ears and makes some sort of angelic noise.

This isn’t an “only pick one” post — we can just chat about the speaking voices we love without choosing a favorite — but yeah, mine is Woo Do-hwan’s. As the saying goes, I could listen to him read the phone book.

Which actors/actresses have some of your favorite distinctive speaking voices?

Now dramagods should give him a lead role already, then my fan gal heart can burst from happiness 😊

Lee Soo-hyuk has a sexy voice.

100% with Han Suk-kyu. He is so freaking talented. He is also a voice and stage actor on top of being the top star in Chungmuro before his back injury.
I’d love it if he narrates the whole Annals of the Joseon Dynasty.

Song Duk Ho. I was mesmerized by his voice in Link.
Yeo Jin Gu's voice is deep but it has never had that effect on me.
This reminds me, after The Best Hit I was watching an interview with Yoon Shi Yoon and Kim Min Jae. The interviewer told KMJ that he looks very much like YJG, KMJ answered yes, except YJG's voice is 7 storeys under the ground! 😂😂

One of the first things that grabbed my attention when I started watching k-dramas: the deep and / or beautiful voices many actors had.
Kim Min Jae, Kim Nam Gil, Lee Junho, Nam Joo-hyuk, Lee Jae Wook, Seo Ji Hoon, Yoon Shi Yoon (so sweet and distinctive broken voice)...

yay for you watching my roommate is a gumiho - the secondary characters, particularly the fl's male best friend and his love interest (trying not to spoil anything, which is why i characterized her as merely a love interest) are incredibly fun. i have "hit the top" on my list of kdramas to watch, so i look forward to listening to yoon shi yoon's voice. :)

Woo Do Hwan! Getting trailers for his TWO upcoming dramas really made my day sometime last week.
Jang Hyuk. His voice is almost as fine as his prop game - give this man a fan, a pair of sunglasses, even a ponytail. He just gets how "iconic" works.
Yoo Ah In. He seems to have been sabotaging himself big time, and is probably cancelled for life. But that doesn't take away from all the work he's done and his beautiful voice. Such a waste, just hope he sorts out his demons and in time finds himself in a better place (*sob)

What a spot on picture for this topic. My absolute top pics are Yeo Jin-gu and Woo Do-hwan. They are tied for top spot for me.
For me Yeo Jin-gu had been my voice bias for years. I first noticed his voice in Moon Embraces the Sun and he was only in his early teens when that show aired. Then I heard his voice again in Hwa-yi and Royal Gambler and I was hooked. I couldn't believe such a voice could come from someone so young.
Then I was introduced to Woo Do-hwan and now Jin-gu has to share my top spot. Woo Do-hwan's voice could melt butter, it is so sultry. It doesn't hurt that his face is as delectable as his voice.
And both men are amazing actors as well. So I can enjoy their voices, faces, and acting all at once. Me so happy.

Required fields are marked *

Now that's the topic to discuss))) Most of my faves were already mentioned - Kim Nam Gil, Yoon Shi Yoon, Jang Hyuk, Yeo Jin Gu, Yoo Seung Ho...

Lee Joon Gi is the winner among them tho - he's my OG kdrama bias after all. While I can name some dramas where I didn't like HIM much, I can't tell the same for his voice, it's just THIS up my alley. Esp in sageuks. As I've said below, everything is better in proper sageuk speech. Special shot outs to his roles in Arang and Moon Lovers, it was eternal love for his delivery alone both times)))

Oh, and Park Hyungsik too, but we've already discussed this in OBY comments. I live for his vocals. Can he pls sing an OST for this drama? *pleading cat eyes*

Who else... Jo Seung Woo. He's already easy on ears when he's talking, but when he SINGS, man...

Re: Lee Soo Hyuk - I'm just a casual admirer, but my bestie is a HUGE fan because of his voice. She loves it so much that we often joke she'd marry the dude without any hesitation just to listen him talk every day)))

I've waxed poetic about Lee Sun-kyun's voice before, and am basically always happy to do so again haha! I loved that in My Ajusshi, that was often the main point of contact that Ji-an had with Dong-hoon, and is it any wonder eavesdropping on him constantly ended up melting her icy shell?

I've been impressed with Park Hyung-sik's voice in Our Blooming Youth recently. It was one of the first things I noticed when he came on the scene, and it gives him such a royal air. I'm not sure if that is what he sounds like all the time (it's my first of his dramas - but certainly won't be my last), but I love the way he sounds in this role and he carries the role of crown prince really well.

Top 6 for me are Lee Sun Kyun, Kim Min Jae, Kim Hye Soo, Yeo Jin Goo, Choi Jin Hyuk, and Kim Yoo Jung.
All of these actors have rich, melodious voices that are well trained with diction and articulation.
And I will add a 7th and steal the pick of missvictrix's .... Woo Do Hwan.
Although I haven't had a chance yet to see many of his offerings, what I have seen (My Country) was quite impressive. Very "melty".

Yeo Jin Gu being introduced in Moon Embracing Sun! OMG! That kid had such a deep voice . I can still remember the scenes so clearly of him. I was taken by a surprise when I watched his scenes.

Kim Min Jae , the doppleganger of Yeo Jin Gu, his voice really made the drama "I Like Brahms' to be even more likeable and the calm soothing way he talks, melts me into a pudding.

Both Lee Soo Hyuk & Woo Do Hwan , their face and their voices matches really well. I can hear them talk for hours.

Recently my attention has caught actor Kim Woo Suk, very much similar to Hyun Bin the way he acts, He also have a great voice.

Jang Hyuk's voice is another one of my favourites and the way he controls his voice when he speaks for each character is phenomenal.

Notable mentions : Yang Se Jong, Kim Min kyung, Yoo Ah In, Lee Joong ki

@elinor: Thank you. As you correctly predicted, she is no longer unfamiliar after I quickly looked her up but you also reminded me of her role in IOTNBO as I have dipped in and out of that drama so didn’t recall that role.

1

You are right. But this is because K-dramas/-movies tend to be male centric, so we do get to hear male voices in a much larger quantity.

E.g. Taxi Driver 2: the five person core team only has one female member, most of the villains are male. Dramas like Narco Saints have no female main roles and only two(!) female cast members in really small parts. The super successful "The Roundup"-movies have no female cast members, except for the occasional working girl or wife. The equally successful "Along with the gods"-movies had one female main character, the rest of the cast was 95 pc male.

A man's voice is the first that catch my attention, not his watch or his shoes or the likes, then his hands (strange right, who cares about a man's hands? But I do, I have a soft spot for beautiful hands, regardless of gender). So here is my list of deep sexy voices: Junho, Woo Do Hwan, Seo Kang Joon, (Hollywood: Jude Law and Matthew Macfadyen. OMG, have you listened to Matthew reading Pride and Prejudice?).

Calm gentle voices (which I also like): Park Hyung Sik and Cho Seung Woo.

Special voices that are signature to that actor (but not necessarily my fave): Kim Soo Hyun and Lee Jong Suk.
