A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 7

It’s a good day to try — and fail — at confessions. But more than our OTP’s struggle to convey their feelings for each other, we also get fake boyfriends, nosy reporters, and the usual hint of a past life that we are nowhere close to unraveling.

EPISODE 7

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 7

If this week were a weather forecast, it’d be a mix of sun and clouds. We get the usual fun moments we’ve come to know this drama for, but we’re also advancing into more sinister territory. I guess we can’t always hope for sunshine and rainbows in what is supposed to be a fluffy rom-com. Sigh.

To confirm her suspicion that one of her girls has been struck by the family curse, Hae-na and Yoo-na’s mother (Jung Young-joo) pays them a surprise visit. The girls refuse to spill the truth, but all Mom has to do is wait till midnight. As expected, Mom catches Hae-na dog-handed, and she goes from “OMG! She finally found a boyfriend!” to “What!? She kissed someone who wasn’t her boyfriend?” In panic — and to avoid Mom’s scolding — Yoo-na goes, “Of course, she has a boyfriend!” But Mom is nothing if not thorough, so she insists that they bring said boyfriend home. Oops!

Once again, it’s Yoo-na to the rescue, and the boyfriend of the day is… Yul in his uncle’s suit. Ha! Yoo-na is such a fun bulldozer, and Hae-na doesn’t even get the chance to protest despite her very valid concern that she could get arrested for fake dating a minor — and her student at that. Anyway, Mom is instantly smitten with the “30-year-old” Yul, and he does his best to play the part — with a few slips here and there.

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 7

Mom might seem overly forward with her insistence on meeting Hae-na’s boyfriend, but she’s actually just worried about her daughter. She wants to be sure that the boyfriend is okay with Hae-na’s secret, and that he can be trusted. Yul replies that he’s not weirded out; neither does want Hae-na to feel insecure or unloved because she turns into a dog.

Yul might be her fake boyfriend, but everything he said about Hae-na was true to him — as yunno, human to human. But Mom gets all caught up in the moment, and drops the “I guess you love Hae-na very much” bomb on him. Love? All of a sudden, Yul’s heartbeat spikes and he begins to see Hae-na in a different light. Omona!

Before Yul can process his thoughts, Mom hits him with another bomb: he must sleep over, and break Hae-na’s curse. She actually locks him in the room! LMAO! Between revealing that her boyfriend is fake and outing herself as a girlfriend who kissed another man, Hae-na goes the cheating girlfriend route. Mom is appalled by her daughter’s improper behavior, so she releases Yul to go home amidst multiple apologies. Lol.

While all of this is going on, the real boyfriend-to-be is at home watching “how to ask a girl out” videos. Not that Seo-won needs to go over and beyond, because Hae-na also likes him — to the point where she invites herself to his birthday dinner with Yul. Hae-na’s presence adds spice to what was supposed to be an ordinary uncle-nephew dinner, and it’s all fun and games until Yul notices the sparks between his uncle and Hae-na.

With the realization that he has become the third wheel, Yul gives us the best eye-roll of the year, before excusing himself and trudging home like the main character in a sad movie. Lol. Finally, it’s just our OTP chugging down multiple shots of liquid courage because they each have something to tell the other. For Seo-won, it’s his love confession and for Hae-na, it’s also a love confession and her dog-secret.

Hae-na asks to go first, but she cannot bring herself to tell Seo-won the truth. “If it’s hard for you to tell me, you don’t have to say it,” he says. And when Hae-na drunkenly likens herself to a hydrangea that changes colors depending on where it’s planted, Seo-won tells her that, “No matter what color you are, I’m sure you’ll still look pretty.” How reassuring!

Since Hae-na’s curse was activated, she’s been on a 100-day countdown within which she must break the curse or stay as a dog forever — case in point, an uncle of hers who has been living as a dog for years now. Currently, she has ten days left to break the curse before her fate is sealed.

While Hae-na is worried about how Seo-won will take the news, she also thinks he’s trustworthy enough to not use the information against her. Yoo-na is relieved to hear this because she doesn’t want her sister to go through the humiliating experience she had with her trashy ex. Mom even had to pay off the jerk to kiss Yoo-na and to get rid of every video he made about her. It makes sense as to why Mom is now overly concerned about her daughters’ love lives.

Unfortunately, said trashy ex just won’t let it go. After seeing Hae-na with Seo-won last week, he made an internet post about a woman who turns into a dog every night — and uploaded a picture of Hae-na and Seo-won. Despite the lazy attempt to blur out their faces, Seo-won is recognized by his high school bully, KANG EUN-HWAN (cameo by Kim Min-seok), and things just spiral from there.

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 7

Eun-hwan is a trashy online “journalist” on the prowl for stories to cover, and he tracks Seo-won down to get to Hae-na. Seo-won doesn’t give him the time of the day much less wait around to hear stories about Hae-na’s secret. But Eun-hwan’s visit is not all a bust as he spots Hae-na poking out of the corner. He doesn’t exactly witness her transformation, but he soon sees Cocoa running off, and more importantly, he sees her clothes on the floor.

Being the perverted bastard he is, Eun-hwan makes away with Hae-na’s clothes. He also takes her work ID, and begins snooping around. He visits her parents’ restaurant, gets a friend to plant a video recorder in Woo-taek’s vet shop, and even comes around the school to question her students. The concept of boundaries doesn’t exist to Eun-hwan, and he’s further ticked off when Seo-won warns him to back off. So, he contacts the trashy ex to buy Yoo-na’s video off the guy.

After confirming Eun-hwan’s sketchy interest in Hae-na, Seo-won becomes more concerned about her safety. When a suspicious man approaches Hae-na as she waits to cross the road, Seo-won dashes across the road — without waiting for the lights to turn green — to sweep her into the protection of his arms. Thankfully, there are no Trucks of Doom in sight. Phew! But I can’t even swoon over this scene because while I think the “suspicious” man was just an ordinary passerby, there’s an actual threat on Hae-na’s back out there!

A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episode 7

A Good Day to Be a Dog said, “let’s raise the stakes,” and it did just that! We now have a countdown to Hae-na’s curse becoming permanent, a trashy journalist who just won’t go away, and of course, Bo-gyeom — who at this point needs to actually get a life outside of being the lurking agent of gloom.

There’s also Yul and his implied crush on Hae-na. (Did we really need this arc in the middle of everything that’s going on right now?) But I’ll take this one-sided crush if it’s the “trouble” that Ji-ah was referring to last week. So far, the show has done well with its balancing act between the fluffy and the serious, so I kinda want to trust that it won’t deviate from that path as we dive into the second half.

Such a cute episode!! Star of the week was definitely Yul, he was so adorable with how he went along with Yoona's crazy scheme and then how he dealt with being the third wheel during Seowon's birthday celebration. He's been a consistently wholesome and golden retriever-esque character throughout but this ep. really highlighted it for me. And his new? little crush on Haena reminded me of the teachers I have innocently, but very dramatically, crushed on in high school. How very relatable 😂

As for our main couple, they're absolutely adorable people and I'm squealing over the slow-burn, but also simultaneously (and contradictorily) I'm also screaming at how slow it is. BUT we're only at ep 7 and have made significant progress so far in mapping out their feelings, so I'm hoping that means we'll get some cutesy couple fluff in the second half. I do really wish Haena had told Seowon at the restaurant - she was so close! - but I also understand why she's hesitating so much.

As for Bogyeom, what is he doing? is he good or bad 😭 I feel like his role in the last two-three episodes especially is just *stares ominously* Which I don't mind but like the ambiguity they seem to be building up about his character has me on edge because it's an unknown at this point.

Next Thursday can't come fast enough!!

If the second half of this drama is anything like the webtoon, we're in for cuteness overload. Both of them just gotta confess...

I'm still wondering if anyone in admin is aware that Bo-gyeom's carved out a lair in the school basement lol

Oh yay, I'm glad to hear that!! Hopefully they follow in that direction with the show too then!

And also given how (at times, wilfully) blind they are to issues of school violence and bullying, I'm going to assume they don't give a toss about anything that's not visible and would damage school rep, including Bogyeom's private underground antiques museum 😂

The webcomic is angsty enough to keep it interesting but no more than that

"As for Bogyeom, what is he doing?"

Not sure. He is scary but I hope the writers let him deal with those punk reporters like he dealt with the bullies.

I loved how whipped Seo-won is from day 1. Lol @ the multiple hair flip and them being 100% effective.

I know they're basically flirting and want to spend time together, but they could have tried to make Yul feel included too. Poor boy, it felt really cold, on top of being the third wheel.

Yes, I was also hoping they'd drop the weird student crushing on teacher trope with Yul... like, we’ve seen them change things from the webtoon. There's no *reason* to include this plot line, this isn't a jdrama after all.

Why can’t either of them complete their sentences 😭 even with all that Dutch courage... in the webtoon, aren’t they already dating when the reporter-bully shows up? Why can’t we have that? We're getting one ep per week, at least pick up the pace.

They made the bully even more of a lowlife in this. I didn't like this week's episode very much, and I’m certainly not looking forward to the usual damsel in distress kidnapping arc (gender flipped tbf), like with every crime kdrama. Hopefully we return to our regularly scheduled healing doggy drama soon.

only consolation with the bully arc is that we'll get to see Bo-gyeom go full white tiger mode again? looking forward to the catharsis ig.

They aren't already dating in the comic but the journalist is a lot less malicious and there are no hidden cameras

could have sworn the bully-journalist showed up post confession but it's been a while.

yeah, in the webtoon, he was still an awful person but at least he offered a half-apology. here, I don't think he's redeemable at all.

Nope, in fact the timing of the journalist arc is pivotal to the confession arc (can't say more in case it's a spoiler). Unless the drama changes it but I really hope they don't!

Also the drama not only kept Yul's crush on Hae-na but emphasized it even more. I agree, it's baffling

I'm curious what the reaction in Korea is. I thought that any kind of relationship between students and teachers was taboo there (some of those things would get you fired in my country). I know, it's a fantasy, and it's not like they really ARE in a relationship with students, but these teachers should maybe think a bit, and take more precautions so they don't get accused of such.

it was more emphasized in the webtoon because he actually confessed there (to both)
it looks like it will stay as just a hidden crush in the drama to avoid issues (same as they removed the drunk kiss on Seowon's bday)

There was a major change from the webcomic this week that really disappointed me - see my fanwall for more.

I was worried they'd killed off Hae-na's dad so I was really glad to see him!

May I say how much I hate seeing Kim Min Seok playing the bad guy? I am such a big fan of his from Because this is my first life and Hello my twenties.
If Yul was a real person, he would be damaged beyond words after what happens this episode. LOLOL. “Take your time and hurry” 😂
For once I would like to see someone just get to the point and say what they meant to instead of get drunk, stutter, delay and have secrets come out at the worst possible moment. Do you hear me Hae Na?

The fact that there are only 10 days left to break the curse is giving me anxiety. Especially with how evil that reporter/bully seems to be. What if he pulls some crazy stunt like kidnap her to be able to film her turning into a dog and it results in more time lost? Also that poor uncle who is stuck as a dog and dying is too sad.

It was super frustrating how long it took both of them to say essentially nothing. We’re half done and they seem hellbent on making sure there’s the past to explore, the reporter to get rid of, resolving the high school crush, confession, mountain spirit reveal, breaking the curse and hopefully a little bit of happy fluffiness. Quite a lot of ground to cover and it will require a lot of patience to make it through the weekly drops.

I found the mum hijinks totally hilarious and Yul so precious! But there was still a niggling discomfort at the back of my mind at this whole plotline because it was as if a teacher was actively "leading" on a young, impressionable teenage student to cause him to develop a crush on her (and these are teenage years when hormones are raging), so it didn't feel that right for me to find it hilarious too sigh....

So, they just cut the cotton candy like this... I don't need a summary before each episode!

I'm not sure if I was the mum, I would have my own children. I think adoption was the best solution to stop the weirdest curse on my family.

Hae-Na can say whatever she wants, but she has the worse tastes in men. Her ex is a big jerk.

I'm not sure I'm interested by the "journalist" plot. I wished to see them as a teacher, in their dog training, etc. or know more on the curse.

Even bottles of soju cannot break the shyness barrier between Hae-Na and Seo-Won. The supporting cast continues to shine, especially Mom and Yul, as their family dinner meeting was the highlight of the episode. There is a weird wingman turning SML syndrome in Yul which is understandable as he is a hormonal teen boy but the idea of him joining forces with Teen Shaman is even better. Bully Tabloid Reporter needs to get beaten with some values but even if he reports the fantasy folklore, who would believe him?

Uhm, where did my cute, lovable fluffy drama go?((( OK, I've anticipated the nasty ex being nasty and was spoiled about SW's bully making a comeback with vengeance, but that was not the only problems here. The entire sequence about Yul posing as a fake boyfriend made me screaming in cringe, who tf though it was a good idea to begin with? Ah, YN, right. When will our FL stop playing along with her sister's outrageously dumb schemes? I understand that in SK culture there's nothing unusual about grown ass working adults fearing their parents' wrath as if they were still kindergarteners, but what exactly could her furious mom do if HN just REFUSED to share any info on the man she activated the curse with and said she's gonna deal with it herself - scream at her? Resort to kdrama beloved trope that is Funny Domestic Violence? *rolls eyes*

And THEN we've got something even more annoying and pointless - Yul being the sulking thirdwheel on his uncle's birthday date. My overall displeasure with love triangles within the family must be already known very well here, but just in case - there was no freaking reason for that! There's rarely IS one, and this drama is NOT that story! And the overly dramatic way poor kiddo's puppy crush on his puppy teacher was shown - totally for cheap laughs - ewww, I can't think of any description more befitting than "tone deaf" here. Hopefully that was the end of it, plot surely has enough of stuff to deal with already.

Aside of Yul's heartbreak, the date itself was very cute (why tf did drama cut cotton candy scene? this becomes a pattern and I do NOT like it!), love was thick in the air, chemistry nearly peaked... until the suuuper awkward bar convo happened. And while I see why they both could be shy enough to fail at spilling the beans right away, that was too much of a back and forth ultimately leading to nothing. Why did HN had to stop him from saying his part? He was almost there, woman!

Villains were too much - both in quantity and quality. At least SW came through with his no nonsense attitude towards the bully (chokehold threats? the "I've always been taller than you" snide remark? yes, pls!) And what the hell BG even wants? He's got his allegedly lost love reincarnated (there's even a portrait of her in his lair to clear out any doubts!), but he does nothing about the fact, just keeps walking around aimlessly and giving creepy glares to camera? How exciting! *sarcasm*

I sincerely hope this was a one-time blunder and drama gets back on track from Ep8 onwards. Get a grip, show!

100% agree: you summed up every point that felt off for me, too. I was watching this for all the fluff & fun and almost dropped it mid-episode. (Then I *had* to see how the date would play out once Yul left, but… *sad trombone* 🙄)

Will wait for reactions to episode 8, and see if it’s worth going on watching this.

I'm not close to dropping YET, but my opinion on the show soured a lot and I FF a big chunk of this episode, which is never a good sign in my case. The worst thing is that writing could've easily make Yul's thirdwheel drama ACTUALLY cute and fun without verging on mean-spirited - had it did away with his crush on HN completely, making him just an embarrassed bystander on his uncle and teacher's date. But no, plot had to stoop this low and make fun of a kid's innocent affection, ouch!

I wouldn't hope much for Ep8 either, it seems like it's gonna be pretty dark with bully blackmailer plot escalating in the worst drama way possible. Maybe afterwards, when our leads get truly closer in process of all the action?

Yes, uncle's story alone kills off any ounce of sympathy I may have had for the person responsible for the curse. Not that I had much to being with - show doesn't seem to try very hard to make this particular character relatable...

They can keep flashback scene, but make the uncle human again in the end so that he can get cured and make up for all the years he lost! I'm gonna be REALLY angry if plot only cares about leads' HE in the end.

2

All of the cute things about this drama are still incredibly cute, and I'm definitely sticking around for them, but they are really being overshadowed by both of the overly dramatic subplots, which I'm not a fan of.

I was okay with the past history stuff in the beginning, even though it didn't necessarily do anything for me, but as the story has gone on, the past history subplot has become taxing to watch. We're learning essentially nothing of value, just watching one guy give ominous but hard to read facial expressions, and I don't care about it anymore.

I'm also 100% not a fan of the reporter storyline. The bullying subplot is a very serious and heart-wrenching story that I legitimately care about it, but I don't care about his childhood bully showing up to blackmail him. Certainly not if you're going to make it so dramatic that it essentially belongs in a different genre.

I just want a cute rom-com, guys! Is that too much to ask?

Thinking about this has actually kind of coalesced for me one of the reasons why I've moved away from Kdramas lately and towards dramas from other countries. Because Kdramas have this ever-present need to throw everything and the kitchen sink into their stories. Kdrama writers seem to have an aversion to writing stories that are just straight rom-com or mystery-thriller, etc., and I don't understand it. And they never advertise this about their dramas. They lure you in with trailers and posters that make you think the drama is going to be one way then bam! they throw in a metaphorical truck of doom to hit you as you're harmlessly crossing the street.

I'm not saying you can't have dramas that utilize multiple genres. I think that's absolutely fine. But does it have to be Every drama???

I do want to read the webtoon, and I know both of these subplots are present there, so I realize it's not really the fault of these drama writers. They are working with the story that already exists. I am hoping these subplots are better integrated there than they are here though.

Also, the whole bit with Yul pretending to be her boyfriend made me uncomfortable.

I'm admittedly an unabashed fan of High School King of Savvy which has a very large age gap. But it's not a teacher-student relationship, the male lead is played by a full-grown adult, and the majority of the story takes place in a business office setting, so I can ignore the age gap. (Also, Seo In Guk kills that role every way from Sunday.) If that drama had been set in a high school with an actor close to the characters age, I don't know that I would have been able to like it. (For example, while I enjoyed a lot of things about I Hear Your Voice, the age gap made me uncomfortable, because the actor was significantly closer to his characters actual age.)

I was just...disappointed by this story choice. (Which is apparently also in the webtoon.)
