A Good Day to Be a Dog: Episodes 5-6

It’s a good day to dive into our hero’s past, and it’s not pretty. But if there’s one thing this drama does well, it’s infusing its light-hearted tone into seemingly dark scenarios. With the many hijinks we got this week, you’ll almost forget that our heroine is trying to break a curse. Unfortunately, our resident tiger spirit will not allow us to disregard the curse so easily.

EPISODES 5-6

Nothing says welcome back from yet another break like opening the week with Seo-won’s brooding shower scene, and getting back-to-back episodes. I can almost forgive MBC for last week’s preemption. Almost.

Moving on, the school is chosen by the Office of Education as a school violence-free school, and the vice principal is mighty proud that this happened during his tenure. This feat is partly due to the school’s video production club and their award winning school violence prevention video. But here’s the irony: their school is not violence-free, and the bullying is perpetrated right in the video production club.

The ringleader of the bullies, JAE-HEE, doubles as a popular teen actress. And her victim, JI-WON, became a scapegoat after some comments lauded her acting in one of the videos as better than Jae-hee’s. Seo-won stumbles on one of their bullying sessions, and Jae-hee claims it’s a rehearsal for a video. (It’s a devilishly smart plan when you think about it, because for alibi’s sake, Jae-hee actually records her antics and edits the clips to make the anti-school violence videos.) Seo-won is concerned, but Ji-won corroborates the rehearsal claim. Still, he insists on further investigation, and the vice principal rebukes him for getting ahead of himself. Why am I not surprised?

The other teachers are just as passive, and without clear evidence, it’s difficult to prove that bullying actually happened. Even when Ji-won admits that she was bullied, the vice principal’s bright idea is for her to leave the club. After all, all will be fine if they just separate the perpetuator from the victim. But Seo-won isn’t having any of that crap. He calls out the vice principal on his pathetic attempt to maintain the school’s image at the expense of Ji-won’s emotional scars, and then he storms out.

This case hits home for Seo-won because he was also bullied in high school (bully guest appearance by Kim Min-seok). Seo-won sees his younger self in Ji-won, and he knows that’s just because a person says they’re okay doesn’t mean they’re really okay. As always, Hae-na is on ground for comforting duties as he relieves his painful memories. “When you want to cry, it’s okay to cry a little,” she says to him. And cry, he does.

With a newfound determination, Hae-na dons the best spy disguise: her dog form! And I just about died of laughter when she ran up to snatch Jae-hee’s phone! She secures the video evidence to prove that the bullying wasn’t a rehearsal, and Jae-hee ends up being axed from all her filming schedules. Serves her right!

But Jae-hee is nothing if not persistently evil, so she formulates a revenge plan to create a scandal between herself and Seo-won. Sigh. Luckily, Hae-na overhears the plot, and this calls for more spy hijinks. This time, she ropes Yoo-ra and Woo-taek into the Dogvengers mission, and they attach a camera to her cute little doggo hat. Hae-na becomes a moving CCTV, and I just can’t deal with her running after Jae-hee’s minions with a carton over her little body! (By the way, it’s kinda scary how normalized it is for these high schoolers to be out way past midnight.)

Hae-na gets the deets of how the scandalous plan will go down, and Yoo-ra calls Seo-won to warn him. Unfortunately, he doesn’t pick up as Jae-hee already called him out to have “one last conversation before she drops out of school.” So it’s time for the second phase of Operation Save Seo-won From His Unhinged Students: admit Yul into the Dogvengers!

The Dogvengers arrive at the crime scene, and Hae-na barks to disperse the minions — who are hiding with a camera to film the scandalous scene. Phew! Seo-won goes after the minions, and Jae-hee goes after Hae-na — who scurries to find a totally not obvious hiding spot. Lol. Bo-gyeom shows up out of the blue, and Jae-hee is startled to see her nice history teacher. But the look in his eyes tells a different story and he scares the hell out of Jae-hee, giving her a taste of the terror her victims felt. This is one after-school lesson she will never forget!

Yul tells his uncle that he showed up at the crime scene because Jae-hee’s scandalous plotting was caught on camera by his friend’s dog, COCOA. And Seo-won totally buys the “pet owners sometimes attach a camera on their dogs to get a dog-eyed view whenever they go on walks” excuse. Cocoa is actually a dog in an online pet-simulation game, but Seo-won doesn’t need to know that. Heh.

With the bullying arc done, it’s time to face the school’s upcoming overnight trip. *Inserts Hae-na’s transformational panic* Yul begs Seo-won to allow Cocoa — going forward, this is our official name for Hae-na in dog form — to stay over for a few nights, and Seo-won agrees on the condition that Cocoa remains in Yul’s room throughout. Hae-na’s plan is for Yul to put Cocoa in Seo-won’s room when he’s half asleep around, say, 3:00 am. But Yul loses the battle with sleep, and the plan fails.

Yul sleeps off again on the night before the school trip, and Cocoa decides to take the bull by the horns — only for her to meet Seo-won wide awake on the couch. Hae-na already suggested that Seo-won could try getting familiar with “the dog that saved him from danger,” and Seo-won steels himself on seeing Cocoa. He slowly reaches out to pat her head, and Cocoa holds her breath. Just a few inches more, and she can kiss him and be free from the curse… but that’s when the front door unlocks, and Bo-gyeom strolls in for a sleepover. Aish! He totally came over on purpose, didn’t he?

Since everyone and their mothers now know Seo-won’s passcode and they can waltz in anytime they like, Yoo-ra sneaks in to pick up Cocoa before dawn. She claims to be the owner when Bo-gyeom accosts her for trying to steal the dog, and he says to be careful not to lose her dog, and to make sure the time they have left together is meaningful. Yunno, since no dog can outlive a person. *Shudders* Why so scary, sir?

Yul feels bad for sleeping off, so he sets up a mini tent and other necessities for Cocoa to use at midnight during the school trip. He’s so sweet! While Yul is on worried mom mode on the trip, his uncle oscillates between swoony mode (standing behind a dozing Hae-na to shield her from the sun) and jealous mode (stabbing the stream with his paddle when they go canoeing and everyone eggs on the Bo-gyeom × Hae-na pairing). Lol.

At night, Seo-won and Hae-na have to search for some students who sneaked out, and she lies about needing to do “number 2” as an excuse to dip before her nightly transformation. Seo-won begins to look for Hae-na after finding their students, and he sights Cocoa from afar as she’s snatched up by a granny — who mistakes Cocoa for her similar-looking missing dog. “Help! I’m being dog-napped,” Cocoa barks at him. Unfortunately, Seo-won doesn’t speak woof.

Cocoa ends up tied to a pole at Granny’s house, and she watches in horror as Granny stirs a broth and whips up a sauce. “It can’t be what I think it is, right?” Cocoa whimpers, and I’m sorry, but this is just too funny! Granny approaches with a knife (that has kimchi juices dripping from it like blood!) and… slices off some greens beside the pole. Phew! But this is the last straw, and Cocoa hurriedly chews herself out of the leash. LMAO! Okay, how sharp are her teeth or how weak was the leash?

Cocoa runs away, but her escape plan hits a pause when she falls off a bridge and lands in a ditch. Yikes! Yul finds her, but he can’t get her out. Thankfully, he drops off her clothes so she has something to wear when she’s back to human form. The next morning, Seo-won finds Hae-na and gets her out, and it looks like he’d been searching for her all night. Awww. He piggy backs her to their lodgings since she hurt her feet, and on their way, she clarifies that she no longer has feelings for Bo-gyeom. Is that a green light for Seo-won?

After finding and returning Granny’s dog, Hae-na and Seo-won go on a date head to the night market to retrieve one of the student’s wallets. A sketchy guy spots Hae-na, and he’s revealed to be Yoo-ra’s ex (the one who attempted to film her transformation). He definitely has a thing for hidden cameras, because he takes a few pictures of Hae-na as she enjoys her night out with Seo-won. “I wonder if he knows his girlfriend is a monster,” the guy mutters with a suspicious gleam in his eyes, and we wrap up for the week.

Just great! Now Hae-na has another dude on her back aside from Bo-gyeom — who remains characteristically himself, with his usual doublespeak and the air of foreboding that surrounds him. At this point, he’s not even trying to hide it anymore after putting the fear of God into the bully and letting us in on his plan to pull our OTP away from each other after they’ve gotten closer.

But where’s the fun in the show if Bo-gyeom is the only spirit running amok among humans? We’ve got a new student, MIN JI-AH (Kim Yi-kyung), who doubles as a shaman. And from the look of things, she was also involved in whatever happened between our main trio in their Joseon past lives — although she doesn’t seem to recognize any of them in the present.

Notwithstanding, Ji-ah sees things like a puppy in Hae-na, and that Yul is entangled with “a certain dog that has a story.” What makes me the most anxious, though, is her premonition of danger for Yul. “You’ll be summoned to some uncomfortable place soon. Be careful. It’s not real. Getting too involved will only lead you to trouble.” No way! Not my Yul. Someone please save him. Dogvengers? Plot armor? Anyone… ?

I still love this drama, but, as I posted on my fanwall, I just don't think Cha Eun-woo is emoting enough. The contrast between him and Bo-geum in ep 5 was especially stark. I know that Bo-geum is a more expressive character, but Seo-won just looked so blank, and at this point in the comic's story he is showing a lot more emotion. He FINALLY made me happy at the end of ep 6, but I would have liked to seen more of that sooner. Hopefully he keeps it up!

As always, check out my fanwall for specifics on how these eps of the drama differed from the comic. There were a lot more deviations this week (but not necessarily in a bad way, mind you)

I noticed too that he finally gained a facial expression at the end of episode six. We can only go up from here...right?

It's cute but kinda bland.

I don't understand why they did the plan in his appartment when it failed the first time. Yul could have helped his uncle to become more confortable with "Cocoa" and not wait for 3am... Letting him alone with a dog when he's afrais doesn't seem the most logical thing to do.

And Yul knew where she was during the school trip and just let her there with her clothes? It was kinda weird...

For the romance, I'm happy she told him she was not interested anymore in BG. No more misunderstandings like that. But with this plot, it means we will get our first kiss at the end? They still can kiss when they're human but it won't lift the curse, can't they?

Time out on the field !!
The Curse Review Board will now convene to look at the fine print .
Review Board members are Cat Man, Tiger Man, and a Vampire
Changes or revisions can be added or removed from the curse as the drama sees fit.
All decisions are final, until they aren’t.

Yul is the cutest! I love how dedicated he is in keeping her secret. The way he came to the school trip with all the necessities 😍. This guy is a keeper.

The leads are really cute together. I loved their little smiles. They had some sweet moments these episodes.

I don’t care for whatever the mystery is in the past. Hope it makes sense when it happens.

Cha Eunwoo as Jin Seowon was so effective in revealing his bullying backstory and the emotions he showed was so convincing so that acceptance of a grown man like him being afraid of dogs became a natural thing. The chemistry between Seowon and Haena played by Park Gyuyoung is also very pleasing to see, especially with the cotton candy scene where their romantics looks for each other gives the butterfly in my stomach feels, so much so that I look forward to their romance blossoming. The feeling of wanting to make time go faster to get to Wednesdays and see the succeeding episodes is escalating. Is it Wednesday yet?!

It seems all the side stories are just here to put off Hae-Na’s dog kiss curse confession to Seo-Won. The bully story rapped up very quickly and too perfect. Why did our amateur detective crew think night kiss caper number two would work? Awkward suspense repeats itself.
The field trip was not as exciting or eventful since Hae-Na and Seo-Won were not together during the critical time.

The only clarity this week is that Hae-Na has changed majors from History to Math. Now has cotton candy has replaced the yellow umbrella? The show still is pedal to the metal cute but is that enough? The only real interesting thing this week was the introduction of the Teen Shaman. She immediately counter-balances Bo-Gyeom’s aura of darkness.

Side note: the Grandma Restaurant seen was all too familiar. When I was in an old working class Seoul neighborhood there was a street filled with local restaurants. I found the sanitation and the smells to be strange and bad . . . pots and pans drying on a dirty plastic chair in the middle of the street; windows so greasy you could not see through; and cooking smells that were not soy or grilled meat but rotten funk.

"Haena changed majors lol!". For real though, It's always a riot for me everytime sister and vet duo would refer to Seowon and Bogyeom as Math and History lmao! Anyways, i love episodes 5 & 6 but especially episode 5. The bullying part shown early on this ep, for me, was a good reminder to the viewers of why this serious crime should never ever be tolerated in schools and anywhere else. During this part of the episode, Seowon knew right away that 1 of the girls was being bullied and so he set forth to investigate on that group. The way he was so adamant in his cause to help the victim, to the point of coming out too strong against the principal was risky but was the righteous thing to do. His acting here was really good and gave exactly what the scenes asked for. It showcased the higly determined side of Seowon's character imo. The irony is that it eventually led to his emotional breakdown when he revealed his vulnerable side to Haena as he recounts his own bullying experience. That moment when his nephew Yul asked to be carried but he couldn't even lift him coz he was so badly beaten by the bullies and so he was saying sorry to Yul while crying, that was a heartbreaking scene tbh. Kudos to Eunwoo, you managed to make me cry yet again! Overall, am glad everything went well in the end. Sherlock Haena came to the rescue and prevented the mean girls + 1 boy in framing up Mr. Jin for sexual harrasment(wth). The leader, meanest girl bully got the scare of her life from the hands of the Tiger spirit lord thank God! Haena, her sister(the coolest of all) and the vet were so funny as ever! Episode 6 is swoon worthy as per ealier teasers suggested, love the part where Haena said he's no longer interested in history and of course the cotton candy date at the end of the episode as the two leads gazed lovingly to each other's eyes. That wrap up was the best.

Eunwoo gave me all the feels when Seowon was reliving his days of being bullied, poor bb! Loved how Haena listened and comforted him, which then made their sweet moments in episode 6 all the more heart-fluttering. I'm so happy with their chemistry!
Meanwhile, Bogum is being creepy af, but it's great. Loved the charged moment between him and Jiah, despite them not recognizing each other. If she's meant to be his previous love, though, it's awkward that they made her a student instead of at least a student teacher.
Cocoa the virtual pet may be my favorite running joke - of the show and even of the year. I just about died when Junseo said Seowon told him to clean out Cocoa's anal glands LMAO.

I was not ready for all the bullying scenes, I always find them triggering. But like the reviewer said, they balanced the grimness with humour and just handled that arc very well. In fact, this week was the first time I enjoyed the drama as much as the webtoon, if not more...

They made Seo-won’s tragic backstory a little less explicit and drawn out. (Thank you, screenwriters.) Moreover, they handled the entire school violence plotline much better than webtoon imo. In this version, the bullied student got justice (??) and didn’t have to transfer schools. Plus she has friends too? Good for her. As for her bully, she really got the fear of God (or more accurately, mountain tiger spirit) into her. l don't see her pulling this psycho stuff again. they even sorta fleshed out the secondary bullies??

Shoutout to the drama for putting a Sherlock coat on the CGI doggy… these are the cinematic choices I watch kdramas for.

As for the doggy ops, I really wish these guys would discover set alarm?? Like team, you wouldn't have to worry about Yul sleeping on the job if y'all set an alarm. Even smartphones have that feature!

The shaman girl looks disconcertingly like Kaya Kiyohara's younger sister. More importantly, not sure how I feel about the drama making shaman girl the lost lover of tiger boy. I foresee unfortunate implications of the age gap variety down the road...

This random gambler out in what I assume are the boonies has the latest Samsung foldable phone? Good for him ig.

I was wondering if they'd have the bully gonna come back in this (eonni's ex didn't give off reporter vibes) but the previews answered that question real quick. Hmm, the bully here just seems like the stereotypical kdrama psycho character. In the webtoon, he was an outwardly well adjusted adult who didn’t even think he did anything and I thought that was more effective. Banality of evil and all that.

This more me being petty but I found those three girls are so annoying. (like that Harry Potter meme where it's like, "whenever there's trouble, why is it always you three?") First they almost got her in trouble with those delinquents earlier and now her foot injured... *And* they have the temerity to make her search for their wallets?? But hey, at least Hae-na got a sort of date out of their shenanigans.

I realize now that I've become old enough to side with the teachers rather than the bratty teens. So that's cool.

I think bratty trio was grounded until returning home, and there may be something important in that wallet (student card? daddy's credit one? home keys?), which leaves only one of the teachers to go and retrieve it.

This show still too cute! But I almost forgot about it during its hiatus weeks. Can't decide if I should just wait it out and binge, but there's a cuteness overload every time I watch this show and it's needed as its getting so dark and cold so early now.
Don't know what to think of the shaman girl, because as others have said the age gap would be inappropriate. But I'm wondering if its not going to be a love story between them in the present, (maybe it didn't amount to anything in the past either) but instead one is going to try to break apart the main couple and the other is going to help them instead.
More being on opposite and opposing sides instead of an angsty love story.
This is the my first time seeing the actor who plays Mr. Lee and he's so good. I was legit feeling scared for the teen bully when he confronted her, even though I agreed with everything he was saying. At least she wasn't let off easily. She'll be and should be scared to bully anyone else. Her gang of friends at school being total losers deserved worse than library duty too.

I read the webtoon so i knew it was coming, but oh boy I could not stop the tears with the bullying scene, the way Eunwoo portrayed the pain and hopelessness when the other kids just see what's going on and move on, it broke my heart </3
I'm so glad they decided to give us 2 episodes this week, the second one was much lighthearted and with so many moments that gave me butterflies ... the scene when Haena is jealous while stapling posts on the board, when Seowon rescues her and omg the cotton candy scene ... this is honestly my favorite romance drama this year :D

It’s hard to get back into it after so long but I tried. It’s almost like watching a new show.
i loved watching the bully get bullied. As someone who was bullied in school, this resonates.
The lead pair is so cute together, but Yul is by far my favorite.
Bo Gyeom watching them leave from the roof of the building thing was creepy af but it feels like they are hammering the creepy bit too much. Is it possible that he will turn out to be a friend in the end? All he has done so far has helped, I think.
CEW didn’t do jealousy well, IMO. Hae Na and Bo Gyeom, on the other hand, looked pretty cute together in the boat ride. Maybe cos BG is a really natural actor.
It was so funny to see the students shadows sneak away as HN was telling them to sleep. Grandma who took HN as a dog was pretty scary. It really
Felt like they were trying to force a scary scenario.
The bad guy at the end, does he maybe think she is a monster just because she becomes a dog at night? Or maybe cos she beat him up for mistreating her sister?

I am really enjoying this! I particularly like the changes to the webtoon related to the bullying and the dogyvenger team. So fun and makes changing into a dog nightly more entertaining and resourceful. I like the use of dog abilities of being able to sniff out the perfume of the bully helpers and hearing the dog whistle to get rescued.

I actually like the flashes of darkness for LBG and how scary he was giving the bully a taste of her own poison. I think in the webtoon the past connection and his reason for doing what he did seemed more out of left field since he seemed so nice for so long. Here they gave up the secret in the promo and let the dark show. This may help explain the reason better when they reveal it.

I do think CEW mostly looks stiff but every now and then he does a scene like when he’s crying about his past bullying that I think he can emote. Maybe it’s just the way the director wants the character to act.

Dare we hope that the next episode will air normally? Seems highly improbable they will air 2 again.

the episodes had a right balance of humor, romance and mystery while making progress with its overall storyline and introducing many new characters making viewers wait as the story unfolds for them further.
In Episode 5 and 6 of A Good Day to Be a Dog, as they delved into the challenging and impactful topic of school bullying. Cha Eun Woo, portraying Jin Seo Won, skillfully delved into his character's past of enduring school bullying. His portrayal effectively conveyed the vulnerability of a victim, showcasing his acting skills in bringing this challenging role to life. The episode also introduced us to a new character Min Ji Ah who seems to have some kind of connection to Lee Hyun Woo's character Lee Bo Gyeom.

For once MBC did something right and gave me two episodes at once as a birthday present, nice! Honestly, I really like this show, even tho it's nothing groundbreaking. It's just... super sweet? Even with ridiculous premise, creepy non-human SML, bland caricature SFL and teen bullies so nasty that I actually wished for the main one to never be seen again after her horror lesson with BG. He should've just eat her tbh - HN's whole family has been suffering for generations over we still don't what offense (her poor uncle!) but this little piece of walking and talking rotten crap gets away with only her celeb career ruined and some wetted in fear undies? Too easy! Anyway, I feel like this show finally (11 months into the year, can you believe that?!) gives me all the fluffy romcom feels without too much brainstorming or worries which I need very much lately.

OTP-that's-not-fully-there-yet continues to be a delight - how hard I cheered when HN finally told SW she's not into other guy anymore. Would've been even more perfect had she admitted - even just to herself - that she's crushing hard on HIM now, but even her denial has been more cute than annoying so far. She's getting there steadily - getting jealous, blushing at him complimenting her dog form (awww!), asking him out for all those unofficial dates, clarifying things that need to be clarified etc. Feels like we're this close to the real breakthrough here - if not curse-related, then romantic one for sure.

SW is just too cute of a person, isn't he? Continued petty jealousy (stolen straw? boy, you're a genius! mentally 12y.o., but genius!), being super attentive potential boyfriend (if people won't start gossiping about the two of them soon, that school of theirs is blind), him fighting so hard to end the bullying (almost too hard... wasn't very smart of him to meet the bitch alone at night) and that flashback with Yul, ugh! I love their family bond (someone give the kiddo REAL puppy, he craves it! and his tamagochi owner friend too!), this closeness is one of the things I love Asian dramas for. Cotton candy move was surprisingly smooth, guess he's really going for it now.

Btw, if SW's main issue with dogs is a - totally reasonable - fear of being attacked, then HN REALLY should tell him THE truth. Knowing that it's her, his friend AND crush who won't hurt him, and not just an unpredictable animal, should help a lot with the curse-lifting skinship, no? Look, once he was talked into viewing "Cocoa" as his savior, he almost made it!

BG and his nefarious revenge (?) plans tire me out. Dude, whatever it is, stop it! Go after your shaman girl instead or something. Saving SW from bully girl just so HE can mess with him in the future... *sigh* That's gonna hurt, huh? Poor thing naively thinks he's a friend, even despite their now thankfully in the past love rivalry(((

Cool, more nasty folks from leads' past coming... That's what I do NOT love about dramas...

I'm a teacher, and found it impossible to believe the scene where he blithely set off alone for a 1am meeting with a female student in the park. It's such a massive no-no, and on top of that this girl had clearly acted with ill intent before, so there's no way he wouldn't question the motives behind her request. In many countries there are child protection guidelines for schools that explicitly warn teachers not to get into situations where they are alone with children. This is for everyone's protection, really.

The bullying scene where Seowon was badly beaten by bullies was so heartbreaking to see since there were other students there that turned a blind eye! After picking up Yul, Seowon was in so much pain that he couldn't pick up his nephew was also so gut wrenching to see and Eunwoo did an amazing job conveying those emotions of pain and dispaire as Seowon. In Episode 6, the theme was brighter and Seowon is clearly now jealous and can't hold it in as shown on the canoe trip down the river. I like how the story evolved and slowly we see Seowon and Haena come closer together through their journey and become friends and supportive of each other through a series of events. It seemed like the cotton candy scene was a turning point in their relationship and they are starting to acknowledge their affections without hiding it. Before, it was just Seowon wanting to spend time with Haena but by the episode 6, it was Haena that suggested they go together to retrieve the student's wallet as her feelings transitioned. As for Bogyeom, there seems to be link between him and the Shaman student but we don't know how it is related to the past in the drama I love the chemistry between all of the cast members especially Seowon and Haena & the sister/friend/Yul in the drama. Waiting for episode 7 now.....
