The Matchmakers: Episodes 5-6

Progress is made on the matchmaking front — but not in the way our resident matchmakers expect it to go. Meanwhile, our love-struck hero continues to fall down the rabbit hole that is his feelings for our bubbly heroine, and what do you know! She just might have feelings for him too.

EPISODES 5-6

The Matchmakers: Episodes 5-6

We pick up from where we left off last week with the uptight Jung-woo recognizing Soon-deok at the Lantern Festival without her Lady Yeo-ju makeup. He is affronted by how a “merchant” like her pretends to be a noblewoman, but he has no plans of reporting her to the authorities. In fact, for all his mortification, he says he prefers her face without the heavy makeup. Awww.

Anyway, matchmaking duties commence, and Jung-woo trails after Soon-deok like a kid with his mom at the mall. As they weave through the crowd, Jung-woo’s chest pain acts up as usual, and Soon-deok volunteers to become his shield. And as he focuses on her and not the crowd, his palpitations calm down.

The shield and the shielded soon arrive at a gathering of old bachelors to interview potential grooms for the Maeng sisters. A good number of the men have “young and pretty” ladies as their ideal type, but with the short timeframe they have to marry off the Maeng sisters, our matchmaking duo can’t afford to be picky. So ready or not, it’s time to begin Operation Love at First Sight.

As it turns out, Cupid has other plans for two of the Maeng sisters that don’t include any of the old bachelors. There’s a love match being played out for Du-ri with LEE SHI-YEOL (Sohn Sang-yeon), a scholar she frequently runs into. Shi-yeol is attracted to Du-ri, and she’s not exactly indifferent to him. There’s just one small detail standing in the way of this love match: Shi-yeol is the scholar Lord Jo’s family plans to marry Ye-jin off to.

Last week, it appeared that Ye-jin had feelings for a servant. But we come to learn that the guy, YOON BOO-GYEOM (Choi Kyung-hoon), is an orphaned nobleman and not a servant. Boo-gyeom clearly reciprocates Ye-jin’s affections. But as someone who chose to become a farmer rather than a government official since he doesn’t have the backing of a powerful faction, it seems like he doesn’t think he’s worthy enough for Ye-jin. Coincidentally, Boo-gyeom is the bachelor our matchmaking duo have in mind for Du-ri.

As for Sam-soon, Soon-gu finally recognizes her as Hwa-rok. But rather than arrest her, he informs her that the Investigation Bureau is after her for causing the spinster’s suicide. Soon-gu advises Sam-soon to stop writing her novels immediately, otherwise she could be executed if caught. B-but… what is going to happen to the love story between the soldier and the female assassin that he just inspired her to write? I want to read it!!

The Matchmakers: Episodes 5-6

Not to be left out of the festivities, our matchmaking duo fly paper lanterns, and it’s cute how Jung-woo has an extra supply of lanterns for Soon-deok. It’s even cuter how he pouts in jealousy over her many references to her orabeoni while they’re at it. Speaking of pouting, Soon-deok suddenly leans in super close to Jung-woo, and he closes his eyes and readies his lips in expectation… but she leans past his face in the direction of the gong signaling the end of the festival. LMAO! Cinderella runs off, leaving behind Prince Charming — who doesn’t even know what to do with himself. “She cannot just leave after making a situation like this!” Jung-woo sputters, and I agree! But this is so fun. Heh.

Soon-deok reunites with her in-laws and Soon-gu — who is questioned by Lady Park about last week’s Shinmungo. Soon-gu claims that the order to open the Shinmungo came from the king’s son-in-law, and Lady Park accepts the explanation although she wonders what Jung-woo is up to — a sentiment Soon-deok shares. She was the one behind it, so why would the king’s son-in-law take the responsibility?

Soon-gu tells Soon-deok that the king’s son-in-law came to see him and personally requested that his name be mentioned if anyone asked about the Shinmungo. Why? He doesn’t want innocent people to suffer at the hands of the despicable Minister Park. And he can always avoid punishment as a member of the royal family. Pfft. What a roundabout way of saying he’s trying to prevent “Lady Yeo-ju” from getting into trouble. Anyway, this leaves Soon-deok wondering if the matchmaking inspector and the royal son-in-law are acquainted. Honey, they’re the same person!

Lady Park tables Jung-woo’s recent exploits with the Shinmingo and matchmaking before her husband. She worries that Jung-woo has taken the king’s side, and Lord Jo decides to expedite the faction’s plan of sending Jung-woo into exile on bribery charges after the crown prince replacement plan pushes through. Ha! To think that Jung-woo’s late father started this faction before Lord Jo hijacked it to grow his power.

Lady Park acknowledges that Jung-woo is too smart to fall for an exile scheme, and she suggests that they keep him close to monitor him. That way, they can decide if he will join hands with them and if not, they can eliminate him rather than exile him. How does she plan to keep him close? Why, make him their grandson’s tutor, of course.

Jung-woo reluctantly accepts the position, and Soon-deok almost faints when she catches a glimpse of her son’s new tutor. Heh. The king’s son-in-law and the royal inspector — she once badmouthed him to — are the same person? Omona! By the way, we come to learn that Soon-deok is not the biological mother of her son, GEUN-SEOK. Interesting.

The Matchmakers: Episodes 5-6

Now aware of who Jung-woo really is, Soon-deok becomes extra polite around him. But he already got used to her treating him like an ordinary inspector, and he finds her sudden respectful attitude uncomfortable. Lol. It’s giving “love me for who I am, not because I’m the royal son-in-law” vibes. Hahaha. Just kidding. He still doesn’t know that she’s the mother of his new student, though.

Jung-woo and Soon-deok are in the middle of finalizing the Maeng sisters’ matches when their fingers accidentally touch. *gasps!* Sparks fly, but they don’t pull away immediately. A flustered Soon-deok just keeps going with reasons why bachelor A is the best fit for Maeng sister B. Caught up in the moment, Jung-woo asks, “What kind of woman should I be with?” And that’s when his servant interrupts their flow to bring in snacks. Come on, man! Couldn’t you come in at a later time?

Later on, Jung-woo worries that Soon-deok must think that he is immoral for asking about a match for himself when he can’t remarry. But Soon-deok is just as dazed, and thinks herself crazy for not pulling away when his hand touched hers. What if he thinks she’s easy? She tells her maid and Ye-jin about her “friend” with a similar problem, and the maid replies that her friend has feelings for that man. Soon-deok issues a firm “No!” but isn’t a strong denial often an affirmation? Lol.

Going forward, Soon-deok resolves to be strictly professional with Jung-woo. For now, it’s probably the best line of action because their matchmaking plans have hit a snag. The bachelors are willing to be matched with anyone except the Maeng sisters due to the unsavory rumors surrounding them. Soon-deok comes up with a plan to quell the rumors — starting with that of Ha-na’s possession by the spinster’s ghost. How? By finding the real murderer and proving that the spinster didn’t commit suicide.

Jung-woo is tasked with this plan, and all roads lead back to Soon-gu — who knows the truth, but is hesitant to reveal who the murderer is for the mere satisfaction of Jung-woo’s curiosity. He claims that the murderer is a powerful person, and he will only reveal the truth if Jung-woo is confident that the culprit will be punished. So, Jung-woo brings him back to their matchmaking hideout. (Who wants to bet that the murderer is connected to Lord Jo’s faction?)

Once again, Soon-deok is surprised to see her brother, but she’s also starting to get a little upset that he can’t recognize her as Lady Yeo-ju. Lol. Meanwhile, Soon-gu just has eyes for Sam-soon and he grows furious when he learns that she — or rather, Hwa-rok — has been chosen as the person to spread the truth. “You said only the murderer will get punished. How could you have Lady Sam-soon do such a dangerous job?” He yells at them. Awww. He’s giving Lord Protector and future husband vibes. Unfortunately, all the yelling gets to Jung-woo, and his chest pain returns with a vengeance that causes him to faint. Yikes!

The Matchmakers: Episodes 5-6

I like the pacing of this show, and how naturally everything is falling into place romance-wise. I especially like that they didn’t drag out the reveal that Jung-woo is the royal son-in-law, and I think the knowledge of his royal identity raises the romantic stakes for Soon-deok — especially with her conflicted realization that she is starting to fall for him. Bring on the forbidden romance trope!

The drama made mention of certain “Agents of Love” who are not mere matchmakers — they’re like deities that can identify a person’s soulmate. From Jung-woo’s research, Soon-deok ticks all the boxes on the Agent of Love criteria — including being a widow! And this makes me wonder how things will play out with our OTP’s romance if Soon-deok is truly an Agent of Love like the drama will have us believe.

What's better than watching one couple with good chemistry fall for each other? Five couples, of course! It's four couples for now though, coz the eldest sister's man hasn't turned up as yet. Though that despicable Defence Minister has a very hot secretary and I doubt such a handsome guy is there in the show only to stand quietly behind the pervert. Let's see if my guess is correct.

For now I'm enjoying the two younger sisters' budding romances a lot. They are spunky girls and they will make their guys prove that they deserve them. I'm particularly interested in the middle sister's relationship coz it seems almost impossible that she can get together with a boy who isn't just 4 years younger than her, but also one who is already betrothed.

This isn't a show I wait for every week, but when I'm watching it I rarely reach for the fast forward button. One thing I like about this drama is that you really can't predict what will happen next. I didn't expect SoonDeok's mother-in-law to figure out that she had been sneaking out so soon, but what was really surprising was her genuine affection for SoonDeok at her husband's grave even after finding out her secret. And for the first time in a segeuk, I love the King! 😄

" I doubt such a handsome guy is there in the show only to stand quietly behind the pervert." --- LOL! That's when you know you've watched too many dramas. The monk guy was pretty good-looking too. I'm sad he's a monk.

I'm not sure if the eldest sister will be paired up in time for the deadline since they don't show her partner in any of the promotional materials. Maybe she'll get a pardon and be allowed to find her match after the marriage deadline and the younger sisters will be allowed to marry without have to marry off the eldest. I think with the nefarious goings-on..i think these sisters will play a role in bringing down the bad guys and be rewarded by the king and will eventually be the most sought-after bachelorettes in the capital.

Oh yes, I also thought the monk was hot!

It will be pathbreaking if a segeuk shows a woman who is single by choice and not looked down for it. I wonder if the show will go there.

I hope the show strays a bit from sageuk norms and does go there. The way the characters break the fourth wall in introducing each episode seems to indicate it doesn't want to be taken so seriously that a little revisionist history and happy endings all around are out of bounds.

Keeping my fingers crossed for finally having woman in a segeuk who refuses to settle for what she doesn't want.

Lol, I love your review. I thought these two episodes were so cute. I think desperate and dateless come to mind, especially before the lighting of the sky lanterns, and Shim Jung Woo, who happened to have two lanterns, was hoping for a kiss.

@unit Thanks for the recap--I'm liking this show more now that Rowoon's character is becoming more sympathetic and less pompous.
Still not a big fan of the minister machinations--wish the show was confined more to illuminating the difficult circumstances facing women, both married and unmarried, in the Joseon era. But I realize if there weren't scheming ministers, viewers would get confused, and think they were watching a group of modern day reenactors at Gyeongbok Palace.

But I did have question: I understood Rowoon's heart palpitations and fainting to be because he was sensing the strong attraction between the brother and Hwa Rok. In other words, HE is the "god(dess) of matchmaking" with an instinctual understanding of who belongs together, with his heart pain as an indicator of his special talent. In fact he has sensed every appropriate match that way with the "Old maiden" sisters, whereas Soon-deok is matching people wrong--even missing the nature of her own sister in law's affections. I thought that that was a clever twist of the show, but maybe I misinterpreted things.

They are both Matchmakers. Both were widowed early and both instinctively know when someone is meant to be with the other. SoonDeok has been handicapped till now coz she hasn't seen any of the endgame couples together as yet, except her brother and the youngest sister but at the time she was trying her best not to look at her brother.

I wonder if maybe her matchmaking powers don't work if its someone close to her? Or if she will eventually see that her brother is a good match with the erotic novelist. Also, I'm worried about her poor pre-alcoholic sister in law missing out on the cynical nobleman farmer. A lot of matches to consider in this one!

I'm glad that this drama is living up to its name. There palace intrigue, there's a murder mystery, but they all exist to support the matchmaking.

I'm really enjoying this show! Personally, I think Jung-Woo is the "Agent of Love" (or 쌍연술사 -- Ssangyeonsoolsa). All those clips of him showing the book that describes who they were and then matching that to Soon-Deok's actions are going to boomerang back on him when he realizes that those heart pains he keeps getting are his signal that he's around a couple who should be matched.

This week I was intrigued by the conversation between Soon-Deok and her scheming MIL. They discuss the fact that SD's deceased husband was ill from childhood. When I add that to the fact that the little boy she's raising is not her actual son, I'm starting to wonder if their marriage was ever consummated. Perhaps this will be how she and Jung-Woo will finagle their relationship in the end... They will do something that will allow them to demand their marriages be annulled, freeing them to be together.

Anyway... that's my theory for now!

With how much Soon-deok loved her husband, I feel like it would be dishonoring him and their love and marriage if she annulled their marriage. I just hope our fun king can make some sort of exception because she would eventually play a role in ridding some of the treason and protect the Crown Prince.

I do have to agree with you on that point. It will be interesting to see how the writer works this out. This production is so well-thought out in every aspect that I can't imagine this being resolved in a lame way.

I feel that it is deeply part of the human condition for it to be possible to love deeply and lose that loved one…to continue to cherish, honor and mourn them, but also be allowed or even encouraged to love again because love isn’t time-or-space delimited. It is our birthright to love inexhaustibly.

For me, it is not a dishonor to have the capacity to love again while also remembering and cherishing a departed loved one, but instead it is a sign of deepest respect for what they loved about you—your life, your feelings, and in this case, your humor.

Perfectly said. I would add that is also something the departed one would want if he/she really loved that one.

7

And another thing I wanted to tell you..you are the queen of fan walls! I am enjoying and loving your posts and I hold you responsible for making me watch this one. I just finished episode 3 and I cannot wait to catch up with all of you. It is a beautiful show in every aspect and I am loving all the characters in the show, all of them are portrayed so well by the actors.

6

I think she should definitely find love again and marry again. And I can see her husband wanting her to love and be loved as she grows old without him, but I just don't like the idea of annulling her first marriage in order to do so. And I can't see her going for an annulment either that would declare that the marriage she treasured never happened. I hope some rules can get bent so that she can be a widow who was fortunate enough to find love and marriage again.

7

Thank you, @kodra! I appreciate your taking the time to let me know.

I am truly captivated by the aesthetics of this drama...but worried it might be leading my/our heart astray!!

Nevertheless...it looks like we're headed into the emotional fray and I'm glad you're along for the ride!

6

I don't imagine ar_arguably romantic means that she should not be able to love or marry again. It's just that annulment goes back in time, declaring what was to be "Nothing", which it definitely was not.
What is actually possible to do and to call what you did under the contemporary set of rules, I don't know.

4

Hopefully the king can do this for both of them for the same reason - not an annulment for Soon Deok or his daughter either but some way for them to end up together.

Although I have to admit that it would be radical good fun if Soon-Deok was in fact more knowledgeable of, you know, the physical aspect of marriage. hahaha! Isn't it funny how something you'd talk about plainly IRL becomes weird when discussing about a K-drama, especially sageuk 😂

Wait - the little boy isn’t her son? Whose son is he? Why is she raising him?

I love this show. I find Rowoon most fun/lovable best when he is goofy, so I like his pompous ass and his timid scholar and his scowling Resentful man. She is adorable! He is adorable! I want a happy ending for our adorable couple! Maybe two matchmakers can marry without killing off their spouse?

I really am enjoying the fact that this sageuk is using its fusion sageuk title and playing with conventional roles for women and so forth.

Thank you for the recap!

Jung-woo is definitely an Agent of Love. It's sort of hilarious how he's so good at everything - including being a deity of matchmaking.

I'm in love with this set of episodes. They're such a joy to watch. I've been replaying the episodes. Impressive camerawork all around, particular around the festival, which must have taken a lot of work to make sure everyone is where they need to be for the camera. Matchmaking is harder work than I expected. You sometimes have to lug an entire drum around. I'm loving all the techniques Soon-deok imparts and her love of matchmaking is seriously infectious. Even for some of those bachelors who ticked me off by believing the rumors about the Maeng sisters - i do hope some of them find their matches. Except for #15. He seriously sucks. I even want to matchmake Mama Maeng and the bookstore owner who so gently wiped away Samsoon's tears.

I am curious about how they are going to resolve the love square of Doori, Confucian-Scholar, Yangban-Farmer, and Yejin. I do think - if we disregard feelings - the Doori+Yangban Farmer combo and Yejin+Confucian-Scholar are better matches in terms of age, maturity, disposition, and family. I do wonder why Yangban Farmer followed Doori and why Soon-deok saw the look of love in his eyes. Did he see Yejin from afar?

Someone please make Sam-soon happy so she can work on volume 3 of Madam's Private Life and her new story about the assassin. I think if her fans knew volume 3 was dependent on her love life, they would be moving heaven and earth to introduce her to all sorts of eligible bachelors.

And does Inspector-brother seriously not recognize Soon-deok? I'm starting to suspect he does since it was a weird coincidence for her to ask him to let Maeng Hana use Shinmingo and Jung-woo was like "do you know Yeojudaek?", but it's too weird how chill he is about it.

+1 on the "Jung-woo is definitely an Agent of Love" I have had this theory almost since ep 1. And he recognizes true love better than SD. I mean, SB is blind to SamsoonXOraboni vibes, but our prince is having palpitations!
Also +1 to the Doori+Yangba-Farmer and Yejin+Scholar being a better match, but well, as long as everyone is happy...
Inspector is aware of how wild Soon-deok is, so is trying to protect her by not recognizing her, I guess.

He, on the other hand, does not know what his palpitations indicate so clearly. It'll be a great help when they figure that out at some point. Or maybe they will leave it to us, in the audience, to clearly see that, whilst they, to the very end, go a-a-a-a-ll the long way sleuthing their way to who should marry whom.

I wonder if these couples will show SD and JW that a match that looks good on paper - or based on a couple's looks, as SD does it - is no match for one based on love. The heart wants what it wants.

I think SD and JW just don't have all the pieces in one place yet and SD is only looking a limited pool now. The matches SD picked out have good potential since she gave Hana a chance to take the initiative in picking and Yangban-Farmer did appear to look lovestruck in Doori's direction and follow her (I think he just saw Yejin in the distance)

But you're right that the heart will want what the heart wants and our true couples will somehow make sure they meet up a lot.

Jungwoo is good because he knows a couple when they are are in close proximity of each other just by being in their presence hence his overwhelm when lots of couple’s are around him. Interesting that being around these two for such a short period of time has such a strong impact. I wonder if it’s worse because he is with his own love interest.

@reply1988 (I upvote my comment instead to click on reply 😅)

I thought she will be angry. It's their pride to be a house of only women and they can take care of themselves. But she's smarter than that and can take the help when it's sincere.

She can be a matchmaker too!

2

I think the continued proximity between the two (they've met two other times since the yard scene and also made physical contact those times) and whom the inspector is focusing on plays a role too. His palpitations eased for a sec when the inspector stepped away from Samsoon for a sec to face Soon-deok. I think Samsoon is sort of neutral towards the inspector, but the inspector is really into her, and he now knows that come May 5th, she will meet Bachelor #23 and get married shortly after. He must reeling from the info. The pressure is on!!

3

This is such an easy watch. Forme it's all about the couples getting together. I'm only interested in the palace politics in so far as it affects our couples in the making. Most of all, I adore the main leads together, they make my heart happy!

I shared my thoughts in a Reddit thread. I'm gonna share it here as well.

I’m loving this so much? I feel attached to all the characters already. Heck, I’m even attached to the donkey (named Gongju lol) and ngl I miss the donkey this week hahaha. Hope it’ll make a comeback. I’m loving the progress so far and I can’t wait to see more.

As far as I can see if it continues to get even better for the next upcoming episodes, this drama is on its way to becoming an underrated gem. It’s already quite underrated in my opinion, not much buzz internationally and domestic ratings are so-so. Some people got initially turned off either by the genre (fusion sageuk comedy), the premiere week episodes (which is the introductory episodes which some find boring) or the acting. I’m glad I didn’t feel that way and am enjoying it so much week after week.

Some were saying how similar Rowoon’s acting/character was from his previous and I wholeheartedly disagree. Shim Jung Woo and Jang Shin Yu couldn't be anymore different. I totally do not see Shin Yu in Jung Woo at all and I think its all thanks to Rowoon’s acting, really. I love how he made this character feel ‘young’ and it’s not just the makeup but how he manages to exude a ‘young and boyish’ charm for this character even though the character is supposedly a Kkondae lol. I think he’s exactly right when he described his character as being stuck in his 17 year old mind even though 8 years has passed. He physically grew but mentally he’s still a teenager and I can definitely see it through his portrayal. Rowoon is older than Cho Yihyun irl but he totally had me convinced that Jung Woo is definitely younger than Soon Deok which is impressive, if you think about it.

Loving how visually pleasing this drama is. Everything about the lighting, composition, colors are so pretty. I'm also loving how lighthearted it is, just as promised. Everything is just so cute and fluffy (for now). There are no unnecessary stress-inducing scenes (hate it when shows that are promised to be lighthearted are injected with some makjang and issues are dragged all the way to the finale). I'm also very much invested in all the lovelines lol. Oftentimes in dramas, you either love the main loveline and don't care for the side couples or you don't care for the main but is invested in the side. For this one, I'm invested in all of them. It has a nice balance and I think the scriptwriter is doing quite a nice job at it. Love that they did not use the typical 'ML unable to recognize FL because of their supposed different appearance' trope and dragged it out. Plus! It's really in character and makes a lot of sense for Jung Woo to recognize her features since he's smart and he probably has her facial features memorized by now with the amount of times he's unconsciously staring at her lol (hate it when dramas made their supposedly 'smart' characters unable to figure these very obvious things out, so kudos!). Same goes for Soon...

Same goes for Soondeok's brother who actually recognized Hwarok. Also loving the pacing of having the FL figured out that he's the Royal Son-in-Law aka the infamous 'Resentful Man'. Other dramas would have dragged this on for several more episodes. Now all that's left is him figuring out her real identity.

I just honestly find all the characters adorable, really. Also, any chance for Jung Woo and Soon Goo to be a crime fighting duo? Because I see the potential there. It'll be funny to see Jung Woo getting close to Soon Deok's family without him knowing the relationship between all of them LOL. Both her brother and her (adopted) son (who is now Jung Woo's student).

Obviously, Jung-woo is that special kind of half-god that recognizes love - his intuition and his body does, but not his mind!
So he coils up, gasps, and even faints in the presence of love. And shouting only really bothers him when it is caused by love, like here.

Jung-woo’s facial expressions are absolutely on point, as usual. There were so many times I paused to laugh at one and then rewind five seconds to see it play out again. Bravo Rowoon!

I’m glad they cleared up the fact that her son is not her biological child. I was getting confused about her timeline. She doesn’t seem old enough to have a 12 year old (even with the very early Joseon marriages it seemed like it might be pushing it), and we saw a flashback last week from eight years ago when she wasn’t married yet. There’s no way her in-laws would have accepted him if he was born to an unwed mother. But that info clears it up nicely, and now I just really want to know who his bio parents are!

I like Du-ri and Shi-yeol together, but I LOVE Sam-soon and Soon-gu together. That action sequence was gold, and I was laughing the entire time. I’m glad he figured out Sam-soon and Hwa-rok were the same person pretty quickly, and fixing all the things about their house was so cute. I’m not actually sure he didn’t realize her identity right away last week, he might have just been surprised and not known exactly what to do in that moment. Similarly, I’m not convinced he can’t recognize his sister, but it’s much more convenient for him to pretend she is someone else, since she’s going through all the trouble to disguise herself in the first place. There’s a lot at stake for her, no need to add to the danger by not playing along with her ruse, right?

All of this! Rowoon is quite becoming the prince of micro expressions!
Cho Yi-Hyun did say in interviews that there is an adopted son, so I was not confused, but yes, good that they made it canonical.
Sam-soon and Soon-gu - They are so noisily but gently falling in love, I love it! Especially him not being too judgmental about her writing erotic novels and only mildly disapproving her cross dressing (which, considering the times, was a huge crime). When all is said, the best kind of love is where you can be yourself with the other person, without secrets and lies.

💯 Really enjoying the acting, too. Jungwoo’s smug face also cracked me up!

I’m waiting *patiently* for the *actual* matches to fall into place, but Samsoon & Soongu are also my favorite couple. The way their meeting in that garden with the colorful banners was filmed was just breathtaking. Really enjoying the cinematography!

+1 to Soongu being actually aware about who is who, but being very considerate about it. Of course he early on recognized his sister, and Hwarok, too.

Also: how cool is Mama Maeng? She has some serious MIL sensors! “I want to talk to this investigator!” *some seconds later* “Be a dear and fix the roof, will you?” 😂 Chapeau!

Yes to all of this! I looooved the flowing silk banners when Sam-soon came out dressed as a girl again. I actually paused it and made my husband look too! Always nice to have some conveniently placed silk when you need to make a good entrance.

Mama Maeng might have some matchmaker tendencies herself! After all, she is widowed and was the first one to talk about the legendary matchmakers. When she told Soon-gu their roof leaked I was like, "Did she just orchestrate another meeting between him and Sam-soon! Go Mom!"

Rowoon did pretty well to mix the comedy and the sageuk ton.

I think the kid is her biological nephew.

I love the variety of Ro-woon's comedic expressions. I love him here even though his character isn't as heroic or male-lead-like. The directing doesn't try to show him off as this model-like handsome man. The camera doesn't try to capture the perfect smooth and sculpted angles, but the angles where you can see the flesh and fold lines in his face create the best expression of arrogance, smugness, vulnerability, cowardice, pain, annoyance, or the great annoyed-and-offended-but-in-too-much-in-pain-to-really-get-angry. I loved his expression when Samsoon was basically like "oh you're not as handsome as the rumors say. You're surprisingly average".

Sam-soon and Soon-gu are my favorite couple. He is totally crushing on her and she is so neutral towards him...almost even distant at times. Of course him attempting to arrest her by pretending to be Hwa-rok's most devoted fan has set him back.

I think Jung Woo is growing on me. I do not find him as annoying as before. Soon Deok is starting to see him as more than the Inspector she is helping for the Maeng sisters.
Eventually Jung Woo will find out who Lady Yeoju really is and can't wait that to finally happen.

Best bride YeJin. Best groom Scholar Si Yeol, DooRi and BoGyeom looks to be set on the person they like. But Lady Park and Si Yeol's mother has ambitions of making the best match. We know that love will prevail with this four despite the two matriarchs wishes.

Lt Jung Soon Gu is already developing feelings for the youngest daughter. So its only a matter of time until it becomes official.

Now for Maeng Hana, I think we need to resolve the issue of the nasty rumor first before she will show interest to anyone. I think one of the groom candidates will end up with her. Or someone else we have not met yet.

I changed my mind. Soon Gu is smart and he can tell that Hwa Rok and Sam Soon is the same person. I think he is just pretending not to know his sister. He threw that question to the group while looking at SamSoon "what are you doing here?" To which Soon Deok and Sam Soon answered and he seemed satisfied after. So I think origibally that question was meant for his sister and not Sam Soon.

Also I am surprised at Lady Park's seemingly genuine affection for Soon Deok. Now this may change once her brother gets in trouble next week and if she finds out that Soon Deok had a hand in it. I like a complex villain so it will be interesting to see what route she takes then.

This drama is, so far, SO enjoyable. The beautiful scenes, the not-taking-itself-seriously-ness, the fourth-wall-breaking character sketches... Adorable. The OTP and the side characters are all multidimensional. The "evil" MIL can calmly suggest eliminating a guy, but is fully defensive of her DIL, and the way her face lights up when JunWoo praises her grandson! The king is a cool cat, a first in the sageuks I have watched.
As others have pointed out, Jung Woo is defs an Agent Of Love - widowe(re?)d early, recognizes people in love... Lets hope our two agents of love can bossam or something and live happily ever after!
Theory - the real Yeo-ju daek is the widowed first DIL of the Left-State-Minister, the one who is supposed to have been killed to get the virtuous woman gate. She is Soon-Doek's adopted son's birth mother. Something caused her to jump/fall into the river while she was pregnant, which led to her rescue by the then un-married SD. Which is why she absolutely refused to go to the LSM's house.

The real YeoJu does have some secret she wants to hide from them, but don't think she is the first DIL. If she was, she wouldn't have gone meet the MIL pretending to
be the matchmaker.

I'm not gonna post my usual stream of consciousness wall of text comments today (don't want to break this site) but suffice I have a lot to say about this drama simply bc I enjoy it so. Like, I don't actively look forward to it every week, as someone else said, but I just have fun every episode. so far, this feels like the saeguk kdrama version of the "cozy" genre of books that's become popular recently.

Jang Sin--, I mean Jung-woo is so puppy coded. I like him now that he's toned down the arrogance and revealed himself just a big ol' baby who has to hide behind Soon-deok every time something spooky happens. And wow Cho Ji-hyun is killing it in this role, I can't see anyone else playing it imo. (her voice is really satisfying... is it just me?) the way Soon-deok just genuinely tries to help him through his social anxiety is charming.

Anyways, I agree with what others have said. Jung-woo keeps getting chest pain whenever he's near a destined couple, it has to mean something. Maybe he's the one with the magical matchmaker skills all along.

Thanks for the recap. Enjoying this one!

This is the most beautiful show airing!

We spent a whole episode in the lantern festival and I didn't mind because it was so beautiful! I loved each lantern, the walk around the pagodes, the dark alley.

Jung-Woo and Soon-Deok : I like their slow development, just a touch of their fingers and it's heart fluttering. The scene when JW closed his eyes and he reopened them he saw only her in the dark, then the lights around light again was really beautiful. I like how she doesn't judge him and just protect him from other people, from the dog, etc. The maid was pretty clever with her statment about the fact SD had feelings for the widower because she didn't care about people's opinion but only his opinion. Jung-Woo was cute by retrieving the lost lantern to make a wish too.

Soon-Goo and Sam-Soon : He better show up at the May festival instead of the candidate! I really like their scenes. He's already fallen hard by protection her from the investigation and helping her with her house. I'm pretty sure he recognized his sister too. By finding the murderer, Jung-Woo will be able to get the rest of the story 😂

Park So-Hyun is really an interesting villain. She loves her family and she cares about them. She thinks about the best for her grandson. I like the fact Jung-Woo accepted to be his tutor and not judged the kid by his grand-parents (I wonder who were his real parents). The scene at the grave was touching too. We could see how both of them were loving her son/husband.

But she's without mercy with her ennemies. The King doesn't have issue with an opposant, so it's sad they want so much the power and get rid of the Prince when they could just work together.

We need Jung-Woo to understand he's a Ssangyeonsoolsa too, his heart is love detector 😂 Because for now, they're just matchmaking themselves and not the sisters who are doing the job alone :p

@unit, thanks for the recap.
Soon-deok suddenly leans in super close to Jung-woo, and he closes his eyes and readies his lips in expectation…

He had his hopes up, that is for sure. 😂

Enjoying the show. Very colorful, with an occasional breaking of the fourth wall.

I like the characters in this show and the romances are cute, but the story just isn’t that compelling. And it also feels a little fragmented to be honest. I wish they would lighten up the political drama; it doesn’t mesh well with the light rom com.

Thanks for the weecap @unit
I fast forward through the palace politics unless the king is on screen because he is the most realistic king I have seen. I have always wondered why they bother to have a king sitting on throne if they have so little power and have to keep the ministers sweet to avoid being killed or having their offspring seen off. It seems I missed the discussion of the adopted son in one of my fast forwards of the evil mother in law and minister chats. I am way behind with my dramas and so only just catching up on the weecaps and comments. I am only half way through the comments but so far no one has mentioned how the adoption came to be, please can a kind beanie let me know the details. Thank you 🥰

I can’t believe I forgot to mention the shots of the festival. The gradual lighting of the path by those red lanterns, the carefully inserted drone shots at different points as people moved around the temple and its grounds were an absolute delight.

We don't know for the adoption yet. They didn't mention who were his parents, how she adopted him, etc.

They talked about it after Jung-Woo came to be the tutor the first time. She told her she took the good decision by stopping him to study after the diner but she should have informed them about it because people could think she's neglects her son's education because he's not her biological son.

I heard that bit and was surprised by the mother in law’s reaction because I felt Soondeok was taking appropriate action to ensure he was ok. I thought it just a turn of phrase not a true statement. I will rewatch that scene.

The mother-in-law agreed with the decision. She told her that health was the most important. It's quite normal because she lost her own son because of sickness. But she wanted to be informed like that if someone contested this decision, she could have said she agreed with it and it wasn't Soon-deok who didn't care about the education of her son.

The leads and the couples (would-be) are chemistry-ing. There is challenge for the OTP because of the societal restrictions placed on widows/widowers for their time. I also would prefer for the show to throw these restrictions out of the window. The FL still deeply loves her dead husband even if their life together was cut short, but she's starting to be attracted to the ML. The ML is so far gone for the FL but is not able to process it in his head that he is attracted to the FL.

I love the shots of the festival, the play of lights and shadows. Those silk swatches flying in the air when Sam-Soon was coming out.

O Bong cracks me up whenever he's mumbling to himself or rolling his eyes about his boss' actions. Jung Woo lessen your pride and ask O Bong how to woo Soon-Deok, he is married, he can give you advice.

I actually never intended to watch this, I was just looking for something to kill time in between episodes of PMR... but then, I could not stop! This drama is so good! I like the social commentary it makes on the condition of women: a law on women needed to get married before a certain age, the complexities of duties and expectations for women, women being the hidden decision-makers without ever being at the fore-front... Add to that anything on social class, and it makes you wonder if we are still in Joseon today. I felt a ping when Soon-Deok MIL told her to hold on until her kid gets married and she can become the lady of the house! as if this was such a big reward to look forward too. It was subtle, but you could feel sadness in her eyes, what great acting! Rowoon is doing so well here, and I appreciate seeing how is acting has greatly improved this year. I am excited for how the sisters' match will pan out, I am curious about the SIL, I wonder who are the biological parents of Soon-Deok's kids, I am intrigued by how they will solve the murder, I wonder what the MIL has in mind for Seon-Deok, I look forward to more moments between the leads (their chemistry is fire!). Bref, I just can't wait for the next episodes!

I am loving this show. The leads are so charming and funny. And I even saw a familiar face from Single's Inferno. Question though. When did we find out that her son is adopted? I even rewatched some of the episode. What conversation got lost in translation?

It's when Soon-Duk and her mother-in-law talked about her son's education. She told him to stop studying after the diner. The MIL told her she took a good decision but she should have told her. Otherwise, people could think she neglected her son's studies because he's not her biological son.

Unit..great review. Always so nice to go over a recap and see what I missed while I was laughing too hard or simply just fixating on Roowon's micro facial expressions, as well as his finely carved jawline. Great comedic actor. And your description of our two matchmakers' slow slide into romance is perfect, especially when they are in the marketplace on Matchmaking business and "Jung-woo trails after Soon-deok like a kid with his mom at the mall. Perfect. He might indeed be the the "Agent of Love" but she is his "Shield", leading him by his stuck-up nose towards their romance...
