[Drama Chat] Comfort characters
by Dramaddictally
The idea of the “comfort character” — a fictional character that you deeply relate to, usually in a way that makes you feel happy or safe — gained popularity in 2020 when many of us were boxed up alone with our anxieties for months on end during the pandemic. I didn’t know the term before that, but the minute I heard it, it made total sense. I’d felt that special affinity a time or two in my life and I was glad to put a name to it.
We talk a lot about favorite dramas — those that comfort, or heal, or feel like a kind of sob-it-out therapy — the ones we come back to again and again to make us feel good. But setting aside the drama itself, there are characters I’ve identified with beyond the frame of the story. Maybe their life circumstances are similar to mine. Or maybe their personality traits just hit home. Whatever it is, I feel a bond, like if I met them walking down the street one day, we’d be instant friends.
I’ve written many times about how much I love the drama Just Between Lovers, and story-wise, that still stands. But the true reason I watch it over and over (and over!) is because the male lead, Lee Gang-doo, is my comfort character. It’s not about having a crush, or looking beyond the character to see Junho staring back at me, it’s that I really identify with his attitude, emotions, and ways of dealing with the world. When things seem dark, or dreary, or too tough to bear, I like to go back and rewatch episodes of how he survives — and think about all the times I too have come out a survivor.
The great thing about a comfort character is that they’re always there when you need them, just waiting to hang out, even if the world is falling apart around us. Whether we see them as a soul twin, a hero, or just someone to provide guidance, the fact that we can call on them at any hour, might be the most comforting part of all.
Do you have a comfort character?

A few days ago I wrote in a comment that Jealousy Incarnate is one of my most favorite shows despite disliking so many things about it. I love it nearly only for the ml's journey. I didn't know the term back them. Now thanks to this post, I know that Lee Hwashin is a comfort character for me.

I absolutely love this topic as I have never thought of a comfort character just how a drama in itself has left me feeling. I will need to think long and hard but in the meantime I look forward to reading the beanies choices.

The girls of Belle Epoque in "AGE OF YOUTH." Everyone has something that I relate to except maybe Ji-won. I enjoyed her character the most because of her unique personality.

Despite the fact that Song Hye Kyo is not my favorite actress, her character Cha Soo Hyun in Encounter is definitely my comfort character. I loved her journey to independence and finding her voice. She goes from feeling trapped by the expectations and responsibilities of her family and position to fighting in her own way for a life of her own choices.

Personally, I loved it, even though others didn’t. It is slower paced, but it is so beautifully shot. The romance is very sweet, but even above that is the heroine’s journey which really resonated with me. She is a quiet introspective character, but Song Hye Kyo is experienced enough to portray her inner conflict. If you can handle the slow pace and quiet characters than that patience is rewarded in the end.

it's veeeeeeeeeeery slow. the ML seems a but *too* perfect imo, almost like he has no life outside their relationship. song hye jyo's char arc was interesting and satisfying. if you don't mind a show where not much happens, you'll enjoy this one!

Always always Park Dong-hoon. My Mister is my all-time favorite Kdrama, primarily because of Dong-hun (though IU was awfully good too -- as indeed were the supporting actors).
Dong-hun questioned his life, which was deemed successful by his friends and family but which left him empty and unable to feel close to anyone. He quietly carried this burden himself but slowly healed through his unlikely, hard-earned friendship with Ji-an.
Dong-hun is an everyman, so well played by Lee Sun-kyun (forever missed).

The first answer that popped into my mind actually was his role in Coffee Prince, and his character in Triple was similar, the kind of mellow guy it'd be relaxing to hang out with, maybe to the extent people take him for granted.

I did not like Coffee Prince, I think it was a drama I needed to see at the time because it felt too dated by the time I watched it. In Coffee Prince it was clear that Hansung’s girlfriend saw that easy going side of him and that’s why she was ok to leave and to come back as suited her. I felt there was no us in her mind, it was all about her priorities. I happily admit I would have missed all the nuances in their relationship as I disliked her and a number of other characters. It was at a time I was not in the habit of prioritising my time by dropping dramas I was hate watching so I watched it feeling very frustrated.

I found their relationship complicated and interesting and true to life.
She was a tricky character and I certainly wouldn't want to be involved with her.
But it wasn't straightforward... Han- kyul was constantly hanging round her because he was too lazy/cowardly to get a relationship of his own. And Han-sung had an eye for Eu-chan.
But this is the only thing I've seen Lee Sun-kyun in, and he was probably my favourite character in the show.

I watched Coffee Prince at the time it aired, and I didn't like it either. Nearly everybody was priotarizing their own feelings... It's probably a healthy approach to self-care, but it frustrated me a lot while watching the show.

i have conflicting feelings toward CP. i can't stand how gross the FL is - i get it, she's supposed to be boyish but does she have to be so... gross? everytime she ate on screen it turned my stomach. Gong Yoo's char was very mean to her, he grabbed and pulled her very roughly. also Han Sung being a pushover and tolerating the hot girl coming and going and saying he's just being "mature" - no buddy, she's not being considerate towards you. but i did watch it twice and might even watch it again, so what does that mean? lol

Varied but such interesting reactions to Coffee Prince. Yes, several of the characters were far too self-centered and selfish. But, even so, the drama is in my second tier of favorite kdramas for 2 reasons: Han-gyul’s progression through his self-awareness of attraction to Eun-chan, and Gong Yoo’s portrayal of Han-gyul (I so wish Gong Yoo did more drama series). I normally feel “been there done that” about dated dramas, but because it was from the past I found it interesting to see its take on gender.

I never thought of her as my comfort character, but if I have to say the character who is more "me", that would be Dok-mi (Park Shin Hye) from Flower Boy Next Door.
I'm not as extremely thrifty as her, but we have many things in common: introverted, huge inner world, dreamy, observant, few friends, homebody, I also worked as copy writer sometimes... I'm more easygoing, but I think we have several things in common.
Maybe that's one of the reasons why this show is a comfort drama to me, because I can relate so much to the FL.

Be warned it’s about a trainee teacher and a student. They kind of manage a work around that allows the relationship to not happen until he is legal but for many that factor is icky. It’s also old drama so has a lot of the old tropes that didn’t age well.
I watched in my early Kdrama days so tolerated a lot more then than I do now.

And I'm fairly tolerant of "transgressive" relationships, and things in older kdramas that aren't regarded as acceptable now. That's partly because I find older attitudes interesting to note, and also there are things in dramas both Asian and Western that ARE acceptable now that I don't particularly like....

my niece and I started this one together about 5 years ago. we still reference the scene from the first episode where she’s dabbing the blood from his face in what seems like the most inefficient way 😂 my niece couldn’t bother with the pacing (in fairness she was 13 at the time). I made it until episode 6 or so and just put it on hold, i can’t even remember why. I liked it well enough. every now and then I pick it up because folks rave about it. I advance a little but never enough to finish. your post inspired me to start again, from the beginning. let’s see how I go.

As a deeply empathetic person I experience this quite often - there are a lot of things I can relate to thus many characters hit the mark, even if not always super intensely. Problem is that I tend to gravitate towards characters and stories that don't provide much comfort objectively, yet often give me an abundance of trauma instead lol. I'll deny it furiously if you call me a tragedy fan, but when I'm REALLY into someone fictional, you can bet that: a) they're a huge mess; b) they're largely doomed; c) often both. It's just the way it is - I know perfectly well that I am a huge mess myself, so I guess liking such characters makes me feel a little less lonely in my struggles. And crying over something that's not real is much easier and quite therapeutic...
Given my last year's mad obsession with TTEOTM's ML you can make your guesses about just how badly effed up my state of mind must be if I found

Is it possible that we’re long lost twins or soul mates or kindred spirits?? Because you just took the words out of my mouth!!! Like you, I am also a deeply empathetic and sensitive person, and at first I was taken by surprise that it is the angsty— like, REAL angsty— Chinese dramas that really pull at my emotions nowadays (well, actually, it’s been 5 years, starting with this one drama and this one character) and it’s the really tragic and doomed characters that really pull at my heartstrings and which are the hardest for me to let go of once I’m finished the drama…. Or that I just can’t let go of, regardless— regardless of time, space, or how many times I re-watch the drama. For me, it is the Chinese drama “The Untamed”, it’s main character, Wei Ying/Wei Wu Xian, and also the Chinese drama, “The Longest Promise”, and it’s main character, Shi Ying

Gikata
February 4, 2024 at 10:24 PM
Haha, who knows)))
I mean, that's what a good angst exists for - to make us care, right? Happy, put together, 100% functional characters can be really inspiring, but they lack relatability - and ability to drive the plot much, but that's a topic for another day. Letting go of stories I really loved is so hard, I tend to get VERY invested in my interests, it's borderline embarrassing sometimes)))
I'd say Chinese media is not as obsessed traditionally with doom and gloom as Japanese one, for example, but they surely know well what works in this genre and how to sell it. Even though I don't always agree with their current "neat non-confusing HE? what's that?" trend...

February 4, 2024 at 10:43 PM
You’re totally right!!
The angst, the flawed, the emotional are all the things that help make me care for the drama orogression and for the characters and their stories/plight because I want to join them in their journey as they become better and as their circumstances become better. Happy and put together stories are too unrealistic for me to a degree and there’s nothing for me to care for and root for since everything is already in its place and there is no need, nor any room, for improvement and moving forward and a journey to go on alongside the characters because the end goal— to be happy and well— has already been reached.
Oh, I just had to stop with Japanese content after “1 Litre of Tears”, both the movie and drama versions. Full stop. Too much 😭 And then I was never able to go back to any content—Korean or Chinese or otherwise— that was overtly sad or tragic, because it all seemed so fake-y and done as drama-for-the-sake-of-drama, which is a trope I despise 😅 But I do know where you’re coming from haha My friends who are really into Japanese content explained style of ending for Japanese content as such:
When the story is done being told, it’s done. There’s no follow up, there’s no leading the viewer into thinking of any other possibility, there’s just no room left for the viewer to feel any lingering feelings about what’s just been shown and told in the thing that was just watched. It’s sort of like having to stop or quit something cold turkey 😅

It's always more satisfying to have a messy character get their hard earned happy ending than anyone else. This gives a hopeful message and just feels gratifying overall.
Japan is really into their angsty aesthetics, aren't they?))) I barely watch their dramas compared to anime and manga (and even that declined a lot lately because I feel like their market is not what it once used to be), but it's a more styling preference - I'm not a fan of their acting school and they have this particular flavor to most of genres that just doesn't work for me. Modern pure melos are NOPE either way though, I don't care what country produced that and would ignore everything equally)))
Hm, interesting perspective. It feels like they go the hardest on typical Asian "ending doesn't matter - journey there does" storytelling structure, which CAN be as effective as a western 3-points (beginning-journey-ending) one, but I have to admit, I'm picky with execution of structures and tropes much more than these things themselves. If it works - great, but if not, I'm gonna roast the hell out of it just because I can)))

I have mostly thought of comfort dramas that I like watching on repeat. Now this post got me thinking if there is any fictional character that I relate to the most. It got me thinking of Yeon Soo in Our Beloved Summer. She has been unsatisfied with her life thinking that it is not the life she wanted. Only to find out in the end that she is successful in her own right. It is the life that she worked hard for and the one she actually wanted when she was younger. I had gone through something similar and I just needed to change my mindset. Be grateful for the little things and celebrate the achievements along the way.

Everybody in 30 BUT 17. If I could choose a found family to be adopted by, it would be them. JENNIFER the awesome ajumma, especially.

Oh yes, both of those are among my feel-good favorites, which I've rewatched several times.
Others in the same category:
- the women in One Spring Night, as well as Ju-ho and his family & friends). I've just rewatched it again, and despite all the scenes with the shouty dad, and the manipulative or even violent exes (all of which I skip), I love this show a great deal.
- everyone at the restaurant in Oh My Ghost
- the four main characters in Run On, plus Woo-sik. I recently rewatched this show too, and loved it so much more the second time round, with all the quirky dialogues.
- and speaking of Woo-sik (or rather, Lee Jung-ha), Bong-seok from Moving!

+1 on 30 but 17 but it's actually Gong Woo Jin for me. I think he was exactly the type of presence you'd want by you while healing from something. Love this show so much - I finished it and immediately restarted it. I think it gets a fair amount of love on this site but deserves even more! And yes, Jennifer is amazing.

Oh, I forgot Jennifer. She's so profoundly awesome and solid even in the midst of all events (to be fair, even in her own life she's shown impeccable solidity - many would not have been able to rise as high as her after what she went through alone)

I've never really thought about having a comfort character but I sure do have a lot of comfort dramas. Going down memory lane, it is kinda hard to recall a character who fits the adjectives alluded to comfort characters despite having met many of them.
I decided to use the drama that has suffered from rewatchs to narrow down my comfort character: Ju Young-do. As an individual, I most times view things via an introspective lens. I'm always in search of subtleties, looking for the unsaid in the spoken, actions and body languages that say the exact opposite of spoken words. Sometimes it gets too overwhelming (the latest culprit causing this being Tell Me That You Loved Me) but it doesn't stop me from ruminating.
Such was the journey I had with Young-do. So many decisions Young-do made(save for the noble idiocy break-up) that I found myself noting I've made and/or would make something similar was a way of saying my thought process wasn't off.
Watching You Are My Spring was one of the best things to happen to me in my kdrama watching experience. And meeting Ju Young-do was one very calming moment.

Both Kang Doyoung (Liar Game) and Lee Changjoon (Secret Forest) for me! Though folks can attest that I can never shut up about Shin Sungrok's chest hair off the Beanies site :3
I love capricous and traumatised antivillains, because in some ways sometimes being harsh and unrelenting is what makes people grow, and keeping your cards close to yourself so you won't hurt yourself or others is how it is. Maybe it says a lot about me that I've always been far more drawn to villains :P

Thank you @dramaddictally for the amazing writing ( bookmarking it so that I can come back for some comfort).
Not exactly a comfort character but a character whom I can deeply relate to & somehow see myself in is Bae Ta mi's character from Search WWW. She was far from perfect, but some of her thoughts & feelings oddly felt like my own.
Kook Yun Soo from Our Beloved Summer. Her character might not be likeable to many, but somehow I could understand her deeply. From the reason of her breakup to her insecurities, I could feel her emotions.
Jung Jae Chan from While You Were Sleeping. He was quite sloppy & not all heroic ( some of his antics actually hit close , to my embarrassment) but when needed, he could stand up for himself & those he cared for. A moral character, but doesn't wear his heart on his sleeves.

I was coming here to mention Kim Baek-du but @snowflower beat me to it.
I've spotted My Mister mentioned a few times, and I could not find a drama that was more infuriating to me. I barely survived one episode and had to give up. Nah, don't argue with me about how much I am missing out and everything I didn't understand in it. I'm not missing out. I'm not and will never be the right audience for this drama. But it did give me vibes of The Girl on the Bridge (I believe in French, the original version, it'll be something along the line of La Fille Sur Le Pont) which is a black and white (don't be fooled it came out in the late 90s). It wouldn't be a comfort character here, but a comfort relationship between the 2 main leads. Not a Kdrama, but if you've watched both, perhaps you can see why My Mister reminded me of it.
Another comfort relationship —but not character— would be Piggy and Buja in Korean Odyssey (Hwayugi)
Back to the comfort characters: To be fair, any of the leads in Hospital Playlist because they go above and beyond for each other to the point where you can't truly name one character only. They are forever entwined in this beautiful friendship, each being a comfort for someone else (and for the viewers) at different moments in time.
Jang Ju-won in Moving has a beautiful story arc (admittedly does it count as a Kdrama when the original material is a webtoon?) We get to see this isolated character that people betray who gradually learns to trust again and who is able to recognise the same angst and loneliness he went through in not just one, but two other characters (aka super dad power Jae-man and the North-Korean agent who matches his powers — is that Kwon Yong-deuk?) He is first introduced as a thoroughly dumb and naive character who has to learn the hard way that some people can't be trusted. And I love particularly that the bitter experience did not destroy his desire to trust others, but on the contrary fine tuned it. He shows on multiple occasions that he is ready to trust those nobody else can trust, specifically because he knows how it feels to be there and because he also knows the importance of empathy when there is nothing else to give. So, he does hold a special place on my list of comfort characters.

I know it's a little wired but my comfort character is actually a "guest appearance" and not even a fixed character, that's Kim Sang soo in "Be melodramatic".
Maybe you don't even remember him but Son Seok koo did a great job in that role, and it impressed me deeply.

I have a lot of favourite characters but never thought of them as “comfort characters” mostly because I like the outrageous ones. Like Cheon Song-yi, or Song Sam-dong Hwang Tae-kyung, Baek Sung-chan, Dae-gil, Lee Jae-ha types 😂
But if there’s one character I absolutely love despite not loving the drama at all - it’s Joon from Love Rain. I found his struggle with wanting to hate his father and not being able to really heartwarming. That last scene with his dad when he said “I hated you for a long time, and… I’ve missed and love you through it all”, that seriously hit home for me. His turbulent relationship with his mom, the realization of how different Ha-na’s mom is to his, how he wanted to sacrifice his love for a parent he tries so much to hate - it’s all just really relatable. I think JGS did such a fabulous job of rooting him to the ground and making him such a relatable, layered character. I genuinely don’t think I’ve rooted more for a character to be happy in the end. Which says a lot considering I did not actually even like Love Rain, let alone love it 😂

Haha my mom saw it recently and I was watching snippets of it which is why I remembered the character LOL.
But generally, I am “character loyal” if that’s even a thing. I haven’t rewatched any of the other characters I mentioned yet all of them are from pretty old dramas. Tbh, I’m a huge fan of the kdramas before Netflix became a thing.

i've never thought of a "comfort character", for me it's mostly the whole show, but i would have to say it's *Yumi* (Kim Go Eun) in *Yumi's cells 1 + 2*. it's a comforting show and i think she was perfect for this role. i've seen this show twice and i know i'll watch it again.
as far as comfort (western) shows goes, it's *The office*, *Friends*, and even *Seinfeld* (bc it's so boring and studid lol).

From The Affectionate King I would go with Rowoon and Nam Yoon-Su- the sweet kindhearted cousin.

Sometimes Beans have different display and user names. The comment must be tagged to their user names for the Bean to get a notification.
For example Healer's is her display name while @claire2009 is her user name. You can check a Bean's user name (i.e. one they should be tagged) by either typing directly in the comment box where similar names pop up as you type and you can choose the correct one by their identifying display picture or right click on the Bean's name to go to their Fanwall and clicking on the search box at the top. The name at the end would be the user name.
Like my display name is Cera but my tag / user name is Seeker.

PS - don't worry about the wrong tag.

I'm usually a Korean-drama-all-the-way person, but if I had to name characters that always make me feel like I'm spending time with old friends, it's actually Sheng Ming Lan, her steadfast general, and his faithful Shitou of The Story of Ming Lan. I'm always a little sad when I reach the end of the drama as I want to hang out with them just a little bit longer.

Mine's definitely Woo Boyoung (Lee Yoobi) in A Poem A Day. I loveeeeee poetry and to have a character who does too was already mind blowing. She's so over the top emotional. I'm a big feeler so I really saw myself in her. She's so positive despite what the world throws at her. I'm like that most of the time but I also overthink (which she does a lot too).
APAD had an awesome ensemble of a cast but having Boyoung there really spoke to me in more ways than one. I always watch APAD whenever life gets tough and Boyoung's always there to lift me up.

Hmm... So for some reason, I'm very biased towards female characters and I often leave a drama loving the male lead so much and caring little for the female characters. Imagine how awkward I feel now, realizing that my comfort characters are females and are probably the only female characters I fell in love with at first sight.
They are both for my favorite short drama and long drama of all time, Lee Yoo Young's character in You Drive Me Crazy and Lee Na Young's character in Romance is a Bonus Book.
Everything about them is beautiful to me. Their expressiveness, their love, their ignorance, their anger, their meanness, their indecisiveness, their childishness, their innocence, their smarts, their unique jobs and lifestyle, their experiences! They were and are soooo beautiful to me.
I'm female by the way.... And I'm sorry, I'll do more falling in love with female characters this year 🥹

I don't think I have a comfort character. It's more about the whole drama.
But I really liked Jun-Woong in Tomorrow. He was a normal young adult trying to find his place in society but he found himself to have to help people in pain. I could feel his pain ; his frustration in the face of so much injustice, not to being able to do anything or how things work in Jumadeung ; his empathy for these people ; the difficulty to accept death, etc.
