OUR BLOOMING YOUTH DB Group Watch/rewatch/binge-watch
Episodes 13 & 14

Episode 13 and 14 remain the highlight of my Our Blooming Youth watching experience.

These two episodes are difficult to summarise because they are an emotion.

For me the highlights were:

1) Hwan’s beautiful confessions. The man has now come to terms with the fact that he truly loves this woman. He wants her by his side. He does not yet know how he is going to accomplish it. He has deep romantic feelings, but his uncompromising moral compass keeps him in dilemma and ambiguity.

He is also torn between treating her like a woman and treating her as an equal (as in a man). Interestingly, he did not intervene when Tae Kang took her down. He let Tae Kang do his job in the absence of clarity, but later, he believed Jay Yi even though her memories made no sense to him. I loved it even more when he showed complete faith in her ability to tackle assassins.

Yet when she is distressed, he goes for that oh! so! delicious wrist-grab, until she protests. And then comes one of the most beautiful confessions, which was not even supposed to be a confession (this girl is in for a lifetime of poetry, I tell you).

But it’s his gaze – goodness heavens – if a gaze could melt ice and enflame embers, this would be it. The first one comes when he comes around and yay! finally handholds (and she in turns keeps the hand in a vice grip lol!) and then he turns on that gaze. How did she not become a puddle of water?

The second one is when she sleeping on the desk, exhausted. That almost-touch was equal to a hundred hugs. It sizzled and burned. This show took slow burn to the next level. And then he turned on that gaze.

2) Jay Yi’s hug: Need I say more? Everyone went – what happened? But I guess Hwan attributed that to her usual non-conformist attitude and distress. Still…..wow.

3) When he called her name…..I remember getting goosebumps. I still do.

4) I wish I didn’t have to see all that cackling.

5) It had some tough moments. To see a family massacred is stuff nightmares are made of. Kudos to the director for having the guts to show something so gut-wrenching.

6) The humour of course, continues. Hwan is jealous of himself… hahaha!! It’s one of my favourite funny sequences. Damn! No one, truly no one does comedy better.

7) The story now gallops towards the unpleasant realities.

My favorite is his quick blink in the 4th gif down – I don’t think she actually spit when she said those words but she might as well have for his reaction!

      2

acting is about reacting. For sure, one can *see* her dialogues by just looking at his face!!! 🥰😍 Confused, bewildered, befuddled in not how uri Seja Jeoha is but Hwan is definitely a fool for love. 😜

Guillermo del Toro says that movies [or shows] are made up of *looks* (which is never more evident for me than when I’m watching Pan’s Labyrinth) and it’s something I think kdramas in general, and PHS in particular, totally excel at.

          4
          1

Yup. Like she snarled at him 🤣. I found it quite funny how dense he is and how bold she became to just say it all (except who it is). I do believe he only thinks in his wildest dreams would this person who has told him he’s less attractive than her fiancé and wants to be the head eunuch would ever like him especially since he’s basically off limits to anyone who doesn’t fit the strict requirements for a crown princess.

        4
        0

It’s funny how he tries to suppress himself, just giving her that sulking hurtful look, but then has to burst out asking her who could it be 😂

I like the Soon Dol and Tae Gang interactions. Despite her accusations he not only apologized to her in the library but also was very empathetic with her predicament.

Of course Jae-yi pointing out the books with her leg (coz pointing with the finger would be a waste of energy) was just such a Jae-yi move.

    4
    1

I thought Tae Gang very wooden at first but it dawned that this boy grew up in a strict role as warrior and bodyguard and he has no idea how to really be smooth with people. I no longer think it is the acting that is wooden, but the character is supposed to be like that. frankly, later, when he tells Yae ji that it is his first time to meet a lady who doesnt fit in womans clothes and tsk tsks judgingly … lol. and he can be opinionated in a very, how to say, hasty and nonchalant way. so, I grew kind of fond of this lil Pinocchio.

      7
      3

It was a difficult role to pull off for sure. It could be too charismatic but just enough to be swift and agile and a warrior, intelligent enough to carry out Seja Jeoha’s order and as world wise as a solider is supposed to be … basically brawn over brains.

        3
        0

His interactions with Jae-yi always had that irritating elder brother vibe. And he’s never forgotten their first meeting and her well-aimed kick. 🤣

        2
        0

I still think this kid was wooden, though he did have great chemistry with both Hwan and Jay Yi. His eyes are rather flat, and his role needed a little more emoting later in the series. The reason I say this is because if you watch Choi Byung-chan in King’s Affection, very similar role with very similar motivations, and that kid aced it. However, Tae Kang grows on you and he has a very sweet smile.

        3
        3

We have seen Hwan cry before (both times in front of his father) but this time when he suspects that both Jae-yi and the Sergeant have died his crying howls were heart wrenching. 😭

I like the scene where Hwan and Jae-yi go to the place where the previous CP used to take Hwan. His declaration that “I will protect my people… with you” is a perfect continuation of their pervious promise to protect each other.

Link to our amazing Claire and her review and photos

I’m going to say right up front that I felt both 11 and 12 were a bit flat. With 20 episodes, they can’t all be perfect. To me these were filler- but when this amazing cast is on the screen who can really complain. There was a lot of background about the past and the Village that was destroyed. I also can’t stand time wasted for plot sake- 1 month in the room for the Crown Prince??? I understand the point at the end. I would have been happy if we could have seen a daily account of the development of the relationship between TG and CP but no, just wasted time. I usually have a hard time with the family parts of Dramas and the King didn’t help me change my mind in this one. I see the story, but would like it to be shorter. This is about when I start thinking it should have had less episodes. But after reading all of the great comments from my fellow watch beanies I was reminded why overall this was such a great show-the Fab 4. How can you go wrong with this team!!
Now that I got that off my chest-
There was some great development of the friendship. Thank you for having that part to look forward to Writer/Director.
Sargeant wins the award for eye rolls in this show!

Best Part of the Show for Me- Shadows! And she does it not once but lots. To me this expresses everything we love about this couple. She is headstrong, but soft and playful, he thinks he is in charge, but loves everything she does. She wins and I love it.

      Hwan: I can’t sing.

And out comes one of the best OSTs out there. This is such a beautiful song and it grows on you. I have been listening to it since it was released and I never tire of listening to it. His range and that sooting melodious voice never gets old. I am not as big a fan of his other songs, but I love Bud.

Did you know, when this episode came out, I didn’t know Hyung Sik could sing (had no clue he was an idol). I think it was one of the beanies who mentioned something about his 3+ octaves (I think it was @Gikata) that clued me in.

Gosh! You were really a muggle back then! Kekekeke!

Oh, my ‘muggleness’ didn’t go away until I heard him doing that ‘Do Intern’ in Bong Soon. I am sure my face was priceless because I didn’t believe it was his voice 😂😂😂

You can’t blame me though, What Happens To My Family preceded this. How would I know he made an effort to sound so terrible in that family karaoke? 😂😂

            4
            0

Yep, likely me it was))) Btw, he wasn’t just any idol – he was THE main vocalist in his group. Tho they had a few of them – another one would be ML of GORYEO-KHITAN WAR – and he quickly became more known for other things than his singing, which is why not many these days are aware of this.

P.S. Anyone needs recommendations from good ol’ idol days? As much as I appreciate his OSTs, there were some real bangers way before that…

            4
            0

Oh! I totally blame you. Don’t you know it’s a trope to have idols sing embarrassingly BAD in dramas.

Dang! Looks like I am still a muggle 🤦‍♀️ Lead vocalist? GKW guy is his bandmate? Wow.

It would be lovely to see if he has sung something good. His OSTs are good, actually some of them quite memorable, but not something I would like to listen to all the time. I like the SWDBS OST, but mostly for the way he sang it rather the actual music.

Ah! I can’t even pretend to teach a teacher, can I now!! 🙃

Yeah … it is very difficult to sing / dance bad for an idol which the dramas force them to do. 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

@seeker: I only know of Si-wan and that too because I watched him. There is another guy I know of but cannot remember the name – the one who took PHS’s recent interview and keeps hugging him while PHS looks quite pained 😂

I am such a bad k-pop follower – if you asked me, I can only name three, maybe four out of seven BTS members. ZE-A is from another planet 😂

I generally don’t see much promotional/ variety shows and prefer the “undiluted” drama experience as I find it’s a rabbit hole difficult to get out from.
But I do respect and appreciate our multi-talented artists. Like Byeon Woo-seok who has actually sung the songs in Carry Sun-Jae and Run or Kim Min-jae who actually played the piano in Do You Like Brahms.

            3
            0

Oh @seeker you got my attention!!! Kim Min Jae is a fantastic pianist and singer. I read once online that someone said he learned to play for Brahms- not true. But he did practice a lot!! He’s got some great songs out there. Many of him rapping as that was his direction for awhile. It’s his musical talents that gave him the opportunity to serve now in the Army military band. And then we get to see him💜💜💜

I don’t know how many times I’ve seen that video of Kim Min-jae playing Traumerei. Also where he’s playing live in some show.
Park Eun-bin learned to play violin for her role but as you said Min-jae practiced really really hard and could play ALL the pieces in the show flawlessly.

We (husband and I) got really excited at ‘Do Intern’ and immediately looked up his music- and were really disappointed. Croony music not for us. Which is not trying to be negative, its great that so many people Like it- its just that we would really love to hear him sing some Opera! ( or even Queen!)

These are some of my favorite episodes too. The anguish when Hwan thought his loved ones were dead, Jae-i’s desperation to find him despite being hurt, her hug when they found him wandering in despair, him calling her real name, her confession, their total trust in each other. This honestly didn’t even feel like a slow-burn romance to me, because it was so clear that they were aware of their own feelings, even if they weren’t fully aware of each other’s. Watching Hwan war with himself because he doesn’t feel allowed to love his best friend’s betrothed is so delicious.

Watching Hwan war with himself because he doesn’t feel allowed to love his best friend’s betrothed is so delicious.

It’s so poignant and was beautifully done. It’s possibly my favourite romance, despite seeing some truly great romances before and since, my feelings towards this couple hasn’t changed.

I had posted this earlier, but I wanted to post it here too:

Why Hwan might not consider it’s him……

The archaic bottling up of sexual desire was a trumped up virtue in most Eastern societies. The wives living completely separate from husbands and not able to meet them at will seems so ridiculous today but that’s how this Prince was brought up, so him trampling down on any of these ‘ghastly’ feelings probablyi another of his ‘virtue’ he is so proud of holding.

What I love about this show is the consistency of characters shown.

Jay Yi on her behalf has given plenty of hints she is interested in him, but they have been too subtle (even for us audience). So when she hugs him, and knows that he would be waiting in th east, he is thrilled. Yet he does not read anything into it.

Thing is, Hwan is used to Jay-yi being ….. Jay-yi. She keeps doing most unconventional things – she gets drunk (the first sticker shock for our very uptight and prudish prince), and she has actually spoken to him about ‘ghastly’ things like ‘kissing’ and ‘smelling’ and ‘checking the guy out before spending rest of the her life in her husband’s bed’ in a complete drunken state – and yet at one poignant moment when he lets his guard down and tells her she could have asked him to buy her ribbons, she is shocked that he could even think she would ask something so personal from him – so Jay-yi too has gone above and beyond to maintain the very personal distance of physical intimacy in a sexual form. She is in a very intimate setting with him everyday – she dresses him up – and yet she is all professional.

Just not that. She holds the royal guard by collar. He does not even blink before taking her flying into the mountains to chase the male assasins. She tosses Eunuchs around and soundly beats them up for their transgression.

Nothing that Jay-yi has done in his eyes points at anything but her being the first order of servant at his feet. So when she finally tells him she is in love, he cannot bring himself to even consider himself – the girl would not even have him hold her hand or tell him that she wanted ribbons……consistency.

Coupled with the fact he seldom lets his guard down around her, he is almost afraid that on misstep from him might make him lose her. He is so desperately friend zoning her, it’s heartbreakingly funny. The only time he truly let his guard down is when he sees her sleeping – that gentle reaching out to touch her broke my heart (and that typical PHS look, someone kill me please) . He looks at her unguardedly for the very first time, before he calls out her name. That scene is so beautifully done.

Jay yi though knows her Prince has fallen for her, and her exasperation at his denseness is endearing and hilarious. “One who keeps coming in and out of palace’ – I laughed so hard at that.

The conversation on this hilltop is my favourite. The cinematography of this scene is wallpaper worthy. It creates a sense of how small humans are to nature and the endless flow of time. After all, personal power and greed are just short lived things compared to the existance of a kingdom that is grounded from generation to generation by ordinary people. This scene induces in me a calm feeling just like when I watch the sunset on my way home every day.

I have loved this scene so very much. Your words are so true. This scene painted the larger picture so effectively.

And this would be the mini confession a Joseon King would say to his Queen. In absence of true ‘romantic love’ that was terribly frowned upon, this could have been considered as close to a confession from a stuck up prince as possible.

Jay Yi of course, is a woman who needs words that are said ‘properly, with length, complexity and detail’… 😂😂😂😂😂

Our Blooming Youth- Episode 13 My Title: Tae Kang’s Eyes

The fun part about posting late is that I already know your feelings about the episode. And my opinion is going against the majority, because I love Tae Kang and His Eyes!!
Our Guardian Warrior has impressed me from the beginning. And as the show has grown and developed, so has his role and his acting. Ep. 13 was when his place in the show is really becoming established. And mystery is starting to surround him.
We see that he is completely devoted to the CP. Their’s is a much deeper relationship than most- more to come later in the show.
“I love that he asks permission- “”Please excuse my rudeness”” as he tackles JY and takes away the sword she had. He knows that the CP has some crazy feelings for her, so he is very respectful. Even if he doesn’t understand. ”

Tae Kang and Jae Yi are playing he said she said
she says he is bad- he says she is guilty and shouldn’t be around
she knows his eyes, she saw them under the mask- he said I was with the prince- in the Palace, hunting grounds
she says he started the fire and gave the snake to the shaman- he said he is the CP protector and friend.

And then the game switches to the CP and JY
she said please believe me- he said it is impossible. I am the proof that he is innocent.

Our Tae Kang has his own internal dialogue going on- she is a women?? How long has the CP knows?? That’s why she has the private room?? Did she really kill her family??
When you add in his sarcasm, dislike for JY and smile he really is a great character.
His story is key for the rest of the show. I like that it is fairly unique. And for a young man of 21 when they filmed this, I am glad that the director took a chance on him. It’s really his first main role. I look forward to seeing him in other productions.
Maybe @seeker or @clare2009 could post a great picture of his eyes for me. I did on my fan page, but still don’t know how to here.

13 was such a fantastic episode, I need to add one thing I loved about the CP
    Because you came:
I could come to my painful place- on mountain
I gained strength to fight against my fate
I could come out in the world and meet people- my people who I will protect.

“Episode 14- “”My heart will still be here, unchanging…..”” Lyrics from song in episode”
Outstanding lines: The writing is sooo good in this show
    Jae-Yi!
    You came to the East
Even if you kick me out
    Loyalty test passed!
    I was glad you worried
I never regretted it, even if I could go back in time, I still would have come to you. It was the only decision I made as a woman that I would never regret.
You fall in love with your heart.
It is someone very stupid I always send sparks with loving looks, but he has no idea!! (Pang Pang with fingers)

Maybe a young Woo Do Hwan? Maybe that’s why I think that

Many young actors have turned into very charming charismatic main leads later on and I’ll look forward to see how this actor would turn out.

He is a cutie but I think he looks more like a young Li Xian (a chinese actor Who has starred in several c-dramas).

I am looking forward to watching him in more main roles.

“I love that he asks permission- “”Please excuse my rudeness”” as he tackles JY and takes away the sword she had

I liked that scene too, and liked it that Taekang easily took the sword from Jaeyi’s hand. He’s the CP guard after all.

I know some folks weren’t impressed by this kid’s acting, but I thought he absolutely did his job and I really liked his role! He was never jarring or took me out of the scene or anything, and alongside really fantastic acting, that’s all I’m really asking for.

Agree that there were some incredible lines in these episodes!

I actually didn’t mind him at all. He was surrounded by such pure talent that his lack of acting didn’t matter at all. And his chemistry with all the actors is great, and his quips with Jay Yi was a highlight. He is very young and very raw, and has a long time to get better and grow, especially if he works hard. Taecyeon can’t act either, but he is absolutely adorable.
